Essay On Picnic - 100, 200, 500 Words

A picnic is a joyous occasion for every person, irrespective of their age. It is a great way to spend time with family and friends and experience the excellent outdoors. There are a few things to consider when planning a picnic. The initial step is to pick a location that is accessible for each person, followed by arranging food and drinks.

It’s always better to carry your own things—including blankets, food and chairs. Whether picnics are at an outstation or a nearby park, it is worth enjoying the time to strengthen your connection with friends and family. No one at the picnic should feel left out, as one of the purposes of the picnic is to connect people. As a result, having a positive attitude and a beautiful smile can brighten your day and make the picnic vibes more positive.

A picnic is a day when people take a break from their busy schedules and get to know each other better. It is a short trip for pleasure to a beautiful place. Picnics provided much relief from daily stresses. Picnics call for families and friends to have fun and make memories together.

In our busy schedules, we often forget to spend time with our family and even ourselves. Picnics are thus a way to take a break from everyday hustle and give ourselves a much-needed change from routine. Picnics are not only fun, but they also strengthen family bonds.

A picnic can provide us with laughter and enjoyment. From our everyday boring lives, we want to take a break and go for a small picnic. Some months ago, I had a picnic with my college buddies. We visited the historic Jaisalmer citadel in Rajasthan. A large range of vacationers go to this place regularly. There were four of us so we hired a vehicle. It took four hours to use and complete the tasks there. We started our adventure early in the morning, so as to explore the whole place. I like visiting at forts and vintage buildings. So, I picked Jaisalmer as our picnic spot.

In these stressful lives, we always look for an escape such that we can forget about our daily problems and enjoy our time away from the pollution and chaos of the city. The best option is to go on a picnic. Picnics are cherished and loved by both kids and adults. It relieves stress and adds some variety to our daily routine.

A picnic is referred to as one of the calmest outdoor activities, although it has its fun sides as well. A meal we consume outside, below the sky, in the presence of sparkling air and plant life, can be termed a picnic. People often plan picnics in parks, lakesides, seashores, and other outside locations that involve a stunning view and clean air.

Importance of Picnic

An outside pastime sometimes helps us calm our minds and maintain desirable fitness. A picnic is how we can add enjoyment to our daily life. There are various kinds of picnics, based on the people who arrange them or the fellow people. There could be college picnics, office picnics, family picnics, and more.

It is no longer incorrect to mention that our everyday lifestyle is full of stress and noise. A picnic introduces an alternative to our daily life. Going out in public places allows people to laugh at themselves. We sing, dance, and do a variety of other activities. A picnic is a powerful way of bringing people close to each other, be it a group of associates, family members, classmates, or buddies. A picnic is a powerful way to solidify emotional bonds.

Picnics allow us to connect with nature as well as with other people. Spending a day out among the trees, vegetation, and greenery has great effects on our experience. Laying or walking barefoot on the grass may be a happy experience for every person.

Picnics allow us to relax in the arms of nature and regain our misplaced strength, as we all know that after city lifestyles tire us, nature is the way to recharge ourselves. Picnics are a way of enjoying our bodies and minds. When we are on a picnic with our loved ones, we enjoy our time to the fullest. It allows us to relax and take deep breaths after weeks of working. If we exclude the food, games and activities are the enjoyable aspects of picnics.

The picnic involved a delightful factor, i.e., food. For some people who must follow a specific weight-reduction plan, picnics can make their food plan flexible for a day and allow them to have whatever meals they prefer. Humans take their favourite snacks to picnics and enjoy them under the stars.

Meal items like sandwiches, fruit juices, and wafers are a few items in each lunch packed for a picnic. Lunch may be considered a crucial part of a picnic. Picnics are a lot of fun for kids because it's like getting a free ticket to have a good time. From getting up early to play with their outside toys to having their favourite snacks, make their days fulfilling for them.

In this blog, we have provided an essay on picnic in 200, 300 and 400 words. This will help all the students to write on this topic. Read more to get a fair idea as to how you can write on it.

Essay on Picnic in 200 Words

A picnic, an old custom, provides the ideal diversion from the pressures of modern life. It’s a day of simplicity, joy, and connectedness to loved ones and the natural world.

Families and friends assemble in parks, on the shores of lakes while the sun warmly illuminates the surroundings. They spread out blankets decorated with an abundance of homemade treats. The hungry will find sandwiches, seasonal fruits, and refreshing lemonade. A dinner becomes a memorable feast when it is simply shared outside. This simple act of doing so increases the food’s flavour.

The natural melody of birds and rustling leaves is delightfully complemented by conversation and laughter. While kids discover the outdoor attractions, soccer balls and frisbees may fly. The day is for playing games, unwinding, and admiring the scenery.

Picnics promote quality time spent with loved ones and strengthen ties. They provide a break from screens, emails, and due dates while bringing back memories of simpler pleasures in life. Picnics produce priceless memories, whether they are enjoyed by the tranquil sound of a lake or in the shadow of a large oak tree.

In those moments, the world feels beautifully uncomplicated, and our souls find solace in the embrace of nature. Picnics are more than just meals outdoors; they are a celebration of life, love, and the enduring human need for connection and relaxation.

Essay on Picnic in 300 Words

Picnics are enjoyable outings that enrich and calm our lives. Last summer, when my family and I made the decision to get away from the rush and bustle of city life and spend the day in the middle of nature, I had one such unforgettable picnic.

We settled on a gorgeous location next to a calm lake surrounded by luxuriant green foliage. A pleasant symphony was produced by the rustling of the leaves as the early sun touched the water and placed a golden hue on it.

The day was jam-packed with entertainment. I was playing catch with my younger sister as my parents had a leisurely stroll around the lake. My mother made those sandwiches with such care, and they were just unmatched in flavour.

We decided to continue our exploration of the area after lunch. In the midst of the tranquil beauty of the lake, we rented a rowboat and set out on the water. Fish were darting beneath the surface in the glisteningly bright water. Even my father gave fishing a shot, but we only managed to reel in a few little fish.

We gathered along the lake’s side as the day dragged on to watch the sunset. The horizon was painted with hues of orange, pink, and purple as the sky changed into a canvas of warm colours. We were all in amazement at the sight, which served as a reminder of nature’s utter beauty.

We started a bonfire and told tales around it as darkness began to fall over the scene. The roaring fire and the shooting stars above gave the night a magical touch.

We reluctantly packed our things and said goodbye to our wonderful location. That picnic’s memories will live on in my heart always. It served as a reminder that, despite our hectic schedules, these are the times we actually value.

Essay on Picnic in 400 Words

A picnic is a lovely outdoor activity that enables individuals to escape from the bustle of daily life, spend quality time with loved ones, and connect with nature. The core of a picnic is found in the straightforward joys it provides, whether the excursion is a last-minute adventure or a carefully planned outing.

Selecting the ideal venue is the first step in picnic planning. Numerous elements, including closeness, the beauty of the surrounding area, and the activities on offer, may have an impact on this choice.

The menu is the most important consideration after the location is chosen. Delicious food is synonymous with picnics, and a thoughtfully planned spread may increase everyone’s enjoyment. Popular options include cold sandwiches, fruit, chips, salads, and homemade desserts. To guarantee that everyone’s taste buds are satiated, pack a variety of dishes.

The menu comes second in importance after the choice of site. Delicious food is a picnic staple, and a well-planned spread may increase everyone’s enjoyment. Fresh fruit, chips, salads, cold sandwiches, and handmade sweets are all common options. Everyone’s taste buds will be satiated if a variety of dishes are packed.

Excitation is in the air as the gang gathers on the day of the picnic. Gathered with smiles, baskets, and blankets, friends and family are prepared to enjoy the embrace of nature. Everyone contributes in order to create the ideal setting for relaxation as they work together to set up a cosy picnic area.

The menu comes next in importance once the venue has been selected. A thoughtfully planned spread can improve the entire enjoyment of a picnic, which is linked with good food. Popular options include cold sandwiches, fruits straight from the garden, chips, salads, and homemade desserts.

The picnickers are filled with satisfaction as the day comes to an end and the sun starts to set. It’s time to tidy up, store the leftovers from the feast, and leave the area as spotless as you found it. This commitment to the environment assures that picnickers in the future can take in the same unspoiled splendour.

In conclusion, a picnic is more than just a lunch outside; it’s a rejuvenating event for both body and spirit. It’s time to unplug from technology and re-establish relationships with friends, family, and the environment.

Importance and purpose of a picnic for children, what precautions should kids take while going on a picnic, how can kids enjoy a picnic with their family, 10-line essay on ‘school picnic’, 10-line essay on ‘picnic with family’ in english, short essay on ‘school picnic’ for kids, short essay on ‘picnic with family’ for kids, long essay on ‘picnic’ for kids, what will your child learn from this essay.

An essay on the topic ‘picnic’ for classes 1, 2 and 3 is a great way to teach them the basics of essay writing. To write an essay on picnic in English, children need to understand the main message that needs to be highlighted. Picnics are a great and fun way to engage with friends and family. Children must know that when writing an essay on a picnic, they need to highlight how it helps them stay connected with their loved ones. Read below to learn about educating children on some key points to remember when writing an essay on picnic and some sample essays that would be a good guide.

When teaching kids how to write a paragraph on a picnic, there are points that they need to remember. The lower primary classes have to focus on how the key message is conveyed. Below are a few key points to remember:

  • An introduction to the topic – picnic.
  • The essay’s main body should speak about the details.
  • The essay should also speak about how a picnic makes a difference.
  • A conclusion that emphasises that the purpose was achieved.
  • Adequate examples must be provided.

Picnics are a great way to engage with family and friends. Spending quality time with people close to us is a great idea. It is an ideal solution to bond when one does not have the time to go for a long trip or a holiday. Easier to plan and affordable, picnics can be a great way to kill boredom and monotony.

When going on a picnic, it is vital to take necessary precautions. It is mandatory to be aware of the venue and its hazards. Thorough research about the place needs to be done and surveyed before planning. One should also check on the amenities and safety procedures there.

There are many ways for kids to enjoy a picnic with their family. There are many ways to have fun, from outdoor games like lemon and spoon race, football, etc., to indoor games like Bingo, Scrabble, and Monopoly. Singing sessions and impromptu dance duos could also be a good idea.

Kids in classes 1 and 2 often go on a picnic from school, which is a good topic to get them to write creatively. Below is a template for an essay for classes 1 and 2 on school picnic:

  • My class went for a picnic to a flower garden last week.
  • The students of standard 1 went for a picnic with the class teachers.
  • We sang songs during the journey.
  • We ate snacks on the bus.
  • We reached the flower garden, and our teachers took us inside.
  • We toured the garden and saw some beautiful flowers.
  • When it was lunchtime, we laid our mats on the ground and had our lunch.
  • Our teachers made us play games like hide and seek and relay races.
  • We started the journey back to school in the evening.
  • I enjoyed my day with my friends and teachers in the flower garden.

Family picnics are a great time for bonding and spending quality time with our close ones. Here’s a template to help kids write the essay for classes 1 and 2.

  • My family and I went on a picnic to a museum yesterday.
  • My father, mother, brother and I went together, as we wanted to visit a museum.
  • My mother had made a picnic basket with food, snacks and drinks for us to eat at a scenic spot.
  • My brother and I took our football to play together, as the museum also had a garden.
  • Once we reached the museum, we walked around the area.
  • After touring the museum, we went to the garden and lay down our mats.
  • We then ate the delicious food that my mother had packed.
  • Once we finished lunch, my brother and I played football for some time.
  • My mother, father, brother, and I played a few board games.
  • We came back in the evening. We enjoyed our day and decided to go on more such picnics.

Children in the lower primary classes will be expected to write a short paragraph on a picnic for the essay section. An example of a short essay on picnics below could be used as a guide:

Our school organised a picnic for us on Children’s Day. We went to a water park that was full of rides and greenery. We travelled with our friends and teachers. On reaching the water park, we were served hot tomato soup as it was the winter season. We then changed into our swimming dresses to go on the rides. Our teachers joined us too. We spent our time on the rides until lunchtime. We were served hot pizzas, french fries, and juice for lunch. Before we left, we were given a small token from the resort, and we took a group photo together. The picnic was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed spending time with our friends and teachers.

Writing a family essay could be an easy task for kids. But an essay on a picnic with family could be a little difficult. The example below could be a start for writing an essay about a picnic with family:

My family decided to go on a picnic over the long weekend. The farmhouse near the city’s outskirts was chosen as the venue. My mother, father, sister, and I drove to the farmhouse early in the morning with my uncle, aunt and their son. We reached there at 10 in the morning. The farmhouse had a pool, garden and an entertainment room. We spent some time swimming in the pool and then played a few games of cricket in the garden. We then took a short break for some refreshments. We went back to playing football in the garden and played until lunch. For lunch, we ordered a meal from the restaurant next door. We enjoyed the delicious lunch and then went to the entertainment room to relax. We watched a movie and then went to the nearby café for snacks in the evening. After a cup of coffee, we took photos together as a family for memories. We then started back home and reached by evening. It was a memorable day for all of us.

Children in class 3 can articulate better and have more knowledge. However, an essay template could really help them. Below is a picnic essay for class 3 that could help them spark their creativity:

I once went on a picnic at a resort with my school. We took a bus to the resort and, on the way, sang songs along with the teachers. After we reached the resort, we played in the garden and spent time on the rides. We spent time on the rides until lunchtime, and then our teachers took us to the dining hall for lunch. The lunch was delicious, with large portions of dishes. After we finished our lunch, our teachers gathered us in the garden, and we played some games like hopscotch, egg and spoon race, and more. We enjoyed spending time with our friends and teachers until the evening when it was time to leave. We clicked a few group photos and took the bus back home. It was such a wonderful day spent with my friends.

Another picnic that I love is the one with my family. It was a long weekend, and since we did not want to go on a long holiday, we decided to take a day trip to the beach. My father, mother, brother, and I set off early to the beach as the weather was hot and sunny. My mother packed some snacks and drinks to eat on the way. My father decided to drive, and we listened to music as we travelled to the beach. When we reached the beach, we immediately headed to the water and spent time swimming! After a few hours, we tucked into the refreshments that my mother had packed. We then drove back home, and I thoroughly enjoyed my day with my family.

By writing on this topic, a child learns to articulate their thoughts about spending quality time with people. Writing on this topic can be developed by getting children to organise their thoughts.

Essay writing is a vital skill for children to learn right from the primary classes. Reading and writing will help children develop these skills. The above templates will help children know how to structure their essays on a topic like a picnic.

Short Essay on a Picnic with Family – Essay 1 (200 words)

Introduction

In order to escape from the hustle and bustle of the routine life, a retreat is a must. What can be more enjoyable than a picnic time with family with whom we do not get to spend enough time? A picnic not only freshens up the mind, but also helps us to explore new places and enjoy food with our family.

The Picnic – How It Was

We chose the community park of our locality that is situated right beside the limpid brook. The park had a children’s play area where the kids of our family played on slides, swings and other play equipments.

We carried our lunch to the park and decided to have it at the separate picnic area, which we had reserved for that day. After lunch, we sat near the brook, fed the ducks and squirrels and took a walk along the trail. The sunset seen above the brook during twilight was magical and we returned before it was dark.

It was a day well spent with all the members of the family and with this we had a great opportunity to breathe in the fresh air. Escaping the daily routine for a day and being in nature’s lap is definitely important in life.

Essay on a Picnic that I Enjoyed with my Family – Essay 2 (300 words)

In the strain of the work load and juggling between multiple chores, having a family picnic was like an alienated topic to me. All I wanted to have was a relaxing getaway with my family at some place off the beaten path where the city commotions will not be deafening and the air will be pure. Finding such a place was not much of a problem as living in countryside comes up with many pristine places which are yet to be explored.

The Long-Awaited Picnic

It was during the weekend of Christmas and we decided to utilize the vacation fully on the outskirts at a nature park. As most people generally gathered at the urban areas to take the full essence of Christmas, the nature park was less crowded and it gave us the opportunity to reserve a campsite to stay overnight and have picnic.

Surrounded by towering Pine grove, the picnic area was serene with only the chirping of the birds penetrating the silence. The murmuring cascade nearby added to the charm of the forest and we made sure to take a dip into the pool formed beneath the waterfall. The hike to the falls was easy for all the members of family and especially my little nephew was overwhelmed.

Appetite soon hit us after taking a refreshing swim and thanks to my mother, we filled our tummies with delicious sandwiches. Meanwhile my brother was busy barbecuing the chicken with his wife and with it, our lunch was sumptuous.

In the evening, we had bonfire at the picnic site and under the starlit sky, the picnic concluded as we entered our respective camps.

Far from the city crowd, a picnic with family was something all of us longed for to explore the other side of life. A small rustic campsite with grille and picnic facility made our time enjoyable and the added bonanza was the refreshing plunge into the pool.

Essay on Outing with My Family – Essay 3 (400 words)

While sunny days are the most convenient for outing, monsoon showers have their own charm and enjoying rain on a family outing has long been on my bucket-list. Being an avid hiker and photographer, the passion for exploring new places run through my genes, just as my father and mother. My sister who lives in another city had come to our place for her vacations and it was a perfect setup to plan an outing which would rejuvenate our mind and let us enjoy the magic of rains to the fullest.

Outing on the Blue Mountains

The Neelakurinji flower that blooms after a cycle of twelve years was the main attraction behind choosing the Blue Mountains or Western Ghats for the family outing. A long drive along the winding paths of Kodaikanal was a treat in itself and all the members of the family enjoyed watching the rain soaked tender green plantation along the road.

The carpet of the purple Neelakurinji along the hill slopes flashed in front of our eyes as we reached the picnic spot. After freshening up at the restroom of the picnic area, we set out to explore the forests passing through which we would reach the slopes of the Neelakurinji flower meadows. Rain had subdued by then and a magical mist emerged from the top of the mountains.

The soil was wet but there was no clogging of water, which made hiking through the grassland easy for us. The number of flowers gradually increased and finally we were standing in a purple flower laden meadow where soil could not be seen beneath.

We spent quality time taking pictures of this rare flower before hiking back to the picnic area. The caretaker of the picnic spot greeted us with fuming coffee sourced from the nearby coffee plantation along with crunchy vegetable chops. The lunch comprised of Fried Rice, Chilly Chicken and fried vegetables which is grown at the farm nearby.

We spent some more hours watching the rain in the mountains while having the fruit custard prepared by the caretaker’s wife. The couple also talked with us regarding his farms and the picnic spot which gets filled with tourists during public holidays. Biding adieu and promising to return someday, we were homebound.

A break from the monotony of life not only infused a sense of tranquility in our mind, but also helped each of us spend quality time with each other, something we do not get scope of in the routine schedules. The Western Ghat outing was a lifetime experience with the Neelakurinjis.

Essay on A Picnic with My Family and Relatives – Essay 4 (500 words)

The series of examinations made my brain tired of long hours of study and I badly needed a time out with my family. As for my family, they too had not been gone for any outing for the past few years and hence, after the last exam, I decided to call up my aged uncle who lives in another city and ask him to come over with his family. It was time for a family picnic where parents and kids could meet for a reunion and spend a day happily.

Deciding the Place

While my little nephew and niece jumped for the waterpark, my cousin called for the city memorial park and the elders wanted to go to the riverside picnic spot. Finally I and my sister-in-law suggested the countryside farm where my cousin could enjoy photography, kids could interact with farm animals and parents could explore the farm. Everyone jumped in unison and I called the farm owner to confirm our picnic visit the day after.

The Journey

Waking up early and getting ready for the picnic outing, we finally set out in our car. The owner had verified our visit that day and also prescribed the route to be taken to reach his farm. My Mother and aunt had packed breakfast for us which were finished in no time. From the well paved city highway, we took the sideway path that led us to the outskirts where the farm is situated. The pasture fields on both sides of the road and the country cottages kept us charmed till we reached the farm.

The Farm and the Picnic

The cheerful old owner was standing in front of the gate to greet us and his friendliness immediately made all of us comfortable. He escorted us to the rustic cottage where the brick fireplace made us feel cozy. We were served homemade cakes and breads before he took us to the petting farm.

My nephew and niece were screaming in joy seeing the large cocks and hens, rabbits, cows, buffalos, ponies and horses roaming about freely. The owner also gave us grains to feed the birds and grass to feed the animals. The best part however was the pony rides, which the kids thoroughly enjoyed.

My uncle and father remained with the kids and animals while my mother and aunt were busy in the barn kitchen preparing the lunch. Meanwhile I, my cousin and sister-in-law accompanied the owner, had a look at his vast farm where he grew sunflowers, grapes, pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes and radishes.

As it was the harvest time, he let us pick the vegetables and grapes to bring back home as well as use for lunch specials with eggs and meat dishes obtained from the farm only. After having a scrumptious lunch together on the large table, all of us decided to interact with the owner, take a walk around the farm and fondle the animals, before setting out for home with a relaxed and stress free mind.

Although meeting the relatives regularly is not possible, thanks to our tight schedules but a quick plan for picnic brought all of us together to have endless chitchats, have food together and visit a new place together. The day ended with a heavy heart but the memory will remain forever.

Essay on Picnic in the Park with Family – My Best Experience – Essay 5 (600 words)

It was during the scorching summer months of the year and summer vacations were going on. With daily office, school and college, neither my father nor I and my sister could plan for a family picnic. The temperature was increasing day by day and my mother suggested that we all should go for a family picnic at the city waterpark. Nothing could be more refreshing than splashing water for the whole day and relaxing on hammocks under shades of trees.

The Picnic Spot

To avoid the weekend crowds, my father planned the picnic on a weekday. The waterpark had lazy rivers, swimming pools, water slides and splash pads. It also had an amusement center where thrill rides enchanted me. The highlight was a separate picnic area tucked in the garden where mango, banyan, palm and eucalyptus trees provided ample shade. We reserved a poolside cabana and the picnic gazebo overlooking the lazy river right under the shade of the mango tree.

How We Spent the Day

While my mother, my sister and I arranged spare clothes and towels along with some dry food, father finalized the route and picking up time with the car driver. We set out at 8 am and reached the waterpark at 9.30 am. My father took the tickets while I bought the refreshments before entering.

After entering, we put our belongings in the lockers and freshened up at the restroom while my mother made sure we have the stomach-full of breakfast with Bread and Butter, Noodles and Egg Benedicts. Afterwards we decided to check out the play area where kids were riding slides and rocking on swings. Swans were roaming about whom we fed bread crumbs. We then explored the garden area where many annual, perennial and ornamental plants were planted in separate areas. Mother, being an avid gardening enthusiast, was thoroughly delighted to see the rose beds and cactus at the greenhouse.

The temperature was increasing and so we decided to take a dip into the large pool area. Being a weekday, there was not much crowd and we had so much fun splashing water onto each other and jumping at the splash pad area. My parents were a bit hesitant in entering the pool, but we dragged them anyway. As father rented tubes for me and my sister, we decided to take a leisurely float on tubes on the lazy river before having large pepperoni pizzas and fried chicken for lunch from the picnic gazebo.

The main attraction however was the water slides and tunnels which dropped at the main pool. As they were costly, we opted for only one and it was worth it. After some more soaking in the pool, we entered the cabana and change into new clothes. The cold beverages served here, were very refreshing. Next we visited the amusement park to ride the Roller Coaster and Sky Wheel which made our hearts beat faster in delight. I and mother had ice creams while my sister took the candy floss and father took the roasted groundnuts from the concession carousel.

It was late afternoon by then and the sun was not so scorching. As we were tired after so much action, we decided to sit back at the cabana and enjoy watching others in the pools. We were served cold coffee before we started for home at 5 pm.

With a perfect combination of greenery, water slides, pools and amusement rides, our picnic at the city waterpark was full of fun even when the sun beat down upon us mercilessly. The cool water of the pool area was soothing in the sweltering heat and we had the best picnic experience under the mango grove.

Read Family Picnic Essay on Vedantu

A picnic is a kind of excursion that is arranged with friends and families in the scenic outdoors. Everyone gets together in a place, ideally a park or resort with a lot of open space, and cook meals and eat lunch together, play games, and spend a whole day making merry and memories. In tropical countries like India, families generally plan exciting picnics during winter holidays because, during that time, the weather remains largely pleasant. These picnics though apparently mere get-togethers have immense significance in our life. They allow us to take a break from our busy routine and spend time with our family which is very important for our mental and emotional well-being. In this essay, I shall talk about a family picnic that was probably one of the best days of my life.

Picnic Day With My Family

Last spring our whole family decided to go to a nearby park for a fun outing and a picnic at the same time. The day before the picnic we could no longer hold our excitement. We spent the entire day planning what we will do and what we will eat. Thinking about all the fun we were going to have made my heart flutter.

The next day after packing our things we left our home at 8 am. The picnic spot was about 2 hours away from our home. We had packed delicious food prepared by my mother. On our way to the picnic spot, we played “antakshari” in the car. I could not wait to reach the spot.

Fun At The Picnic Spot

Finally at 10.30 am we reached the picnic spot. It was a beautiful land on the banks of a river. There was a large area of a green field with a lot of bushes and trees scattered here and there. The river and sky met at the horizon. There was a continuous flow of cool breeze blowing from the river to the banks. It was a mesmerizing sight to behold.

Me and my siblings, we started playing games with the adults including my mother, father, uncle and aunt. We played gully cricket and hide and seek. Soon the adults became tired so me and my siblings, we started racing across the fields.

Finally, we were too tired to play anymore. This was the time for the most amazing part of the picnic, the food. We had brought tasty home-cooked meals from our homes. We unpacked our food and divided it among ourselves. After so many activities my hunger had increased. The food tasted tastier than usual, maybe it was because of the company of the whole family, or maybe it was because I was very hungry. After completing our lunch all of us went for a boat ride. It was my first time riding a boat. At first, I was scared but then slowly I overcame my fear and started enjoying the ride. Then around 5.00 pm, we left for home.

The memories I gathered at the family picnic are some moments I will cherish all through my life. The picnic not only provided a break from the everyday mundane life but also made me happy and allowed me to spend some quality time with my family. I hope we can plan more picnics in the future.

A Descriptive Essay on Picnics, 500 Words

By: Haque , For class 9-12, 05-03-’22

1. A pleasant diversion. 2. Kinds of picnics; (a) family party; (b) a party of friends. 3. Stages (a) planning; (b) arrangements; (c) the picnic itself – our participation; (d) the return journey. 4. What makes a picnic so enjoyable. 5. Personal experience.

Picnics are a pleasant diversion. They break the monotony of life and add a touch of variety. They may be said to touch the prosaic life with the charm of poetry. Springs of joy well up, free from the burden of duties and responsibilities. Hence they are often a refreshing tonic.

Picnics are of various kinds. One may have a picnic with one’s family. This is an escape from the dreariness of domesticity. It is likely to be the pleasantest. As the relationship between parents and children and between siblings also often becomes formal and lifeless. An outing in the open air, away from the well-marked convenience that is so necessary to make existence smooth, is in the nature of a pleasant surprise. It lifts us out of our habitual routine; it brings out the very best in each of us. In Satyajit Roy’s ‘Sakha-Prosakha’ there is such a catchy family picnic scene.

Another kind of picnic is with friends. This is far more common with us. Students of schools and colleges as well as members of clubs and institutions often organize these outlines like picnics. It must be fun for a group of friends to go out together and enjoy some kind of novelty.

A picnic has four stages. The first stage is planning. The selection of the spot, of the party, and of the nature of the outing give ample scope for discussion and makes things lively. The joy of a picnic often lies in the discovery that something has been left behind, something has been mistaken and the plan was not fool-proof. But things are taken lightly, in a good-humored spirit.

Next, come preparations. One must arrange conveyances, collect utensils and eatables. Usually, there is a division of labor and responsibility. Some bring one thing other bring something else. It is a lesson in acquiring organizational skills. The leader has to see if everything is OK.

Then we have the picnic itself. Going around with mismanagement is not a picnic. If there is a mistake or a misadventure it has to be met with humor and laughter.

My experience of such a picnic is pleasantly memorable. There were ladies with us to supervise the cooking. But they stood aloof to enjoy the day, on the plea that the Dhenki (a wooden husking device) should not husk even when in heaven. So we merrily ate the underboiled rice and charred fries. We played cards, carom, and sang to our heart’s content, amidst punctuated gossip.

Finally, there is the return journey. Things have to be packed up carefully. FOn the way back there is a lot to talk about, a lot to think about and remember.

A picnic is not for those who want everything to be as tidy and orderly as home. People go on picnics for the new environment and adventure out of the monotony of daily life. So, only those who are able to easily adapt to the discomfort and minor errors really enjoy the picnic.

Essay on A Picnic I Enjoyed, 450 Words

By: Haque , For class 9-10/SSC, 05-03-’22

Introduction: I have had many picnics in my life. Almost all of them were very enjoyable. Among them, one is very favorite to me.

Preparations for the Picnic: The picnic took place when I was a student at the University of Chittagong. The classes of our third semester BBA course had just started. The teachers and students were feeling the need for rejuvenation. For achieving that goal, it was decided that there could be nothing better than a picnic party. Bandarban was selected as the place of the picnic. At first, a committee was formed with participation from students and teachers for collecting contributions and making all necessary arrangements for the picnic. The committee collected contributions from every one of the classes. Two big chair coaches were hired and other preparations were finished in time.

Description of the Picnic: On the appointed day we gathered at the university campus early in the morning. There was a festive environment. Everyone was in a jolly mood. All of us got on the chair coaches. All necessary goods and food items were also taken on the buses. We took with us rice, ghee, meat, fish, sauce, jam, fruits, spices, bread and other necessary things for cooking. There were also necessary pots, plates, kerosene stoves, spoons, and forks. As soon as all the students reached, we started our journey. It was about 8 AM. We had a microphone and loudspeaker with us. The members of our picnic party were made to perform one after another. Some recited poems, some sang songs, some cracked jokes, some played music, and some gave speeches. We had fifteen honorable teachers with us. They also participated in the performances. Every performance invoked much applause. Some of the performers received standing ovations. We had breakfast on the coaches at about 9 AM with bread, apple, banana, boiled egg, and tea. At about 11 in the morning, we reached Bandarban. We selected Meghla Tourist Spot as the place for our picnic. We all got down and arranged our materials for cooking. We had some expert cooks with us. They took the charge of cooking. The others helped them. Meghla was a very beautiful place. It had a beautiful lake, hills, and a hanging bridge. We were enjoying the natural beauties very much. We had a meal at about 2 PM. Then all of us set out to visit Bandarban city. We went to Shaila Propat, Balaghata Buddhist Temple, the king’s house, and other places of Bandarban. After the sunset, we started our return journey.

Conclusion: It was a very enjoyable event in my life. The memory of the picnic will remain ever fresh in my mind.

A Short Essay on the Experience of A Picnic

It was spring. I decided to have a picnic in the countryside with my friends. I felt that it would help us to forget the monotony of city life and refresh our minds. So, on a holiday we go out on a picnic.

As soon as we reach our destination village , we start walking on the green fields, meadows and river banks. We take deep breaths to fill our lungs with clean and fresh air .

The name of the village was Ratanpur. Nature surrounded by trees makes us happy. The green fields under the blue sky and the beautiful view of the calm river overwhelm us. The sun spreads its golden rays across the meadows and rivers. We enjoy the chirping of birds in the trees. Butterflies fly from one flower to another. We see these scenes and feel cheerful.

When we feel tired and hungry while walking, we rest under a big tree. We dig holes in the ground to make ovens and cook by burning dried stalks. Traveling and eating in a secluded place inside a forest gives us a different feeling. Occasional picnics are a great idea to get rid of the boredom of repetitive living.

A Picnic with my School Friends Essay (925 Words)

December 25, 2017 by Study Mentor 2 Comments

Each one of us, enjoy going for an outing with our family and friends. It might be a movie, an amusements park or a zoo. Picnic doesn’t only bring us close but we all get to know each other in a better way.

Table of Contents

My first picnic

I was 12 when I went for my first picnic with my friends, organized by our school. I still remember it was an early Sunday morning and my father dropped me to the school for the trip. We were supposed to be taken to a zoo and a dairy factory, where we enjoyed ourselves very much.

Just a day before my picnic I bought so many eatables and food items to enjoy during my picnic. We reached the school and I bid a bye to my dad and then he left.

We entered the bus, as it was my first journey by bus so, I was a little nervous but since my friends were with me so I regained my confidence and the journey began.

The destination was quite far from our school. So to make the journey entertaining we played games in the bus, we sang songs, laughing, chatting, singing and had some snacks.  I saw so many beautiful scenes during the journey, outside of the pacing bus.

When we reached the destination

It was a bright morning and the birds were chirping in joy.  When we entered inside the zoo, there was a small beautiful lake at the entrance. The water was quite cool.

When I went close, I saw so many different breeds of fishes, and turtles. Next to the lake we saw the peacock cage where the bird had spread its mesmerizing feathers and was dancing in joy. The whole scene was like a beautiful dream.

We took photographs and then we moved ahead to explore more about that place.

Exploring the place

Picnic essay

At first I saw my favourite animal ‘ tiger ’ and it looked so fierce and dangerous that I just got afraid and ran away from its cage. We heard the lion roaring shut in the cage.

Then I saw the cage of deer, they all were playing with each other and it was a pleasant scene. Then we enjoyed boating . We saw many different faunas like crocodile, snakes frogs and did some fishing.

We then further explored the different creatures of the zoo.  I took so many photographs with my teachers and friends. We were in high spirits; we just ran around and climbed the trees, shouting in joy.

After exploring the zoo we all were just starving from hunger so we all gathered at a place and had our tasty lunch that we all carried from our home.

I remember after finishing my own lunch, I ate one of my friend’s lunches too and then we started playing games.

My friend carried badminton rackets with him and both of us played a match and I remember losing the match to him and we played hide and seek too. After a short game we all were taken to a toy train in the zoo.

We all sat on the   train and we explored all the parts of the zoo that we were not able to see earlier. We really enjoyed ourselves and gathered so many sweet memories.

Then, we packed our stuffs and we were ready to go to the other part of our picnic that was the dairy.  I was not very much excited to visit the dairy, as I thought it would be a boring place and there would be nothing to do like any fun sort of thing.

When we reached our next Destination

When we reached the dairy we all stood up at the entrance in a queue. Then we moved in together silently.

When we entered we saw a big ice cream and milk parlour and a factory where the products were manufactured. As we were the visitors so we got an ice cream and a milkshake for free and we really enjoyed it.  Then we moved inside where the processing of products was being done.

The purpose of this visit was to help the students to gain some external knowledge that may help them in future. As we moved inside, the manager greeted us and took us for a short factory tour.

We got ideas of how the processing was done of the raw products, how the packaging was done and what all were the requirements to successfully deliver the product to the market.  Then we visited the garden area of the factory where the cattle and its feed were kept.

It was an eye’s dropping moment as everything was so well organized right from the entrance to the factory and obviously the cattle’s as well.

The manager explained to us that how he managed the entire factory and this trip proved to be really beneficial for us , as we gained so much of knowledge , learned how to be in discipline , to keep unity among ourselves  and most of all the  importance of hard work in our life to achieve success.

Then finally the time came when we had to leave and we all collected our stuffs, bid a goodbye to the manager and left for our bus.

Picnic Spot

Finally, we reached our destination. The moment we reached the ticket window, the kids in the family started jumping with excitement. While we were purchasing the tickets, the kids started getting restless to wait. Then we entered for our awaiting adventure for the picnic with the family. As soon as we entered, the beauty of the place welcomed us with a cool breeze on our faces.

We put on the costumes and entered the pool. The coldness of the water was soothing one. Each splash brought a smile on everyone’s face. Everybody went back to their childhood. The youngest one in the picnic with family was 3.5-year-old, who had entered the pool for the first time. He was the happiest amongst all. After spending a considerate amount of time playing with water, we had to struggle a lot to take kids out from the pool.  What a memorable time it was during a picnic with the family.

Then we started heading towards the food zone. The fun in the pool has led to an empty stomach which was making a lot of funny noise. And the aroma of the delicious food which was coming from the food zone had aced our pace towards it.

The kids in the family started making a list of all the things that they wanted to eat. We ordered everyone’s favorite dish and sat waiting for the food to come. This waiting time was the most torturous one. And finally, our hot and tasty food came. We literally attacked it like the hungry animals. The next 30 minutes was complete silence. Everybody in the picnic with family was busy enjoying their own favorite delicacy. We finished eating and left for home.

Though the picnic with family was over, still it is alive in over memories. All the good time we spent together, a lot of beautiful pictures, will always be with us in our memories. We will soon plan our next picnic with family to rejoice our love, bonding, and happiness together.

Please change you destination accordingly in this article I mention a Stanley Park in Vancouver, you may change or put your picnic spot accordingly.

“Kids, we are going on a picnic” Those words always brought to attention and sent excitement through our bodies. A picnic for us was a chance to escape the city life and get out into the fresh air with lots of room to roam.

We were double excited when we were told we would be going to Stanley Park in Vancouver. This was a great park with lots of things for kids to do. Once everything was gathered together and the food prepared, Dad packed the car and we were off for the day.

Our picnics lasted a long time especially when it was held at Stanley Park. Normally the park’s parking lot is full but this time we got off early enough to have our choice of parking spaces. The picnic was getting off on a good foot because Dad was not frustrated by a lack of parking spots.

Walking through the tall fir trees made us feel like we were walking through a forest. The sun was kept away while still providing us with enough light to enjoy our picnic spot. The grassy field was smooth as a well-kept carpet.

It didn’t take us long to scatter after we had found our picnic spot. Mom and Dad, as usual, stayed by the blanket and food, enjoying their quiet break from us kids. We had a couple of hours before the food was going to be brought out.

That gave us time to explore the wonderful sites and all us kids would be back on time as no one wanted to miss out n the special picnic food our parents had brought. All morning we hiked the different trails, stopping long enough to peak out between the giant fir trees to see the city around us.

The majestic North Shore mountains mesmerized us as they stood like silent guardians over North Vancouver. Their still snow-capped peaks hinting that winter fun is coming up.

Then we turned our eyes to the waters of Burrard Inlet. There along the glistening waves were many boats gliding to their destinations. They were as free as we were even if it was for only a short time.

After we got tired of looking at the scenery, we headed towards the mini train. Its ride may not have been long but we got to see a lot of interesting sites, like tame wild animals in their natural surroundings.

The train ride lasted only about 10 minutes but it seemed like an hour. There was just so much to see and take in one ride just did not do the tour justice. When the ride was over we continued to walk the different trails enjoying the freedom from the city. Everything was fresh and pure.

It didn’t take us long to reach Lost Lagoon and its totem pole treasures. Carved by local Indian tribes long ago, these totem poles told everyone a history lesson about the Indians who carved them.

Each face and animal had its own important significance. Brightly colored these totem poles stood strong reminding us to never waver even when storms appear on our horizon.

Finally, it was time to eat and all of us kids hurried to our picnic site. The food was just being placed on the blanket and we kids did not hesitate to grab our share. All of our favorites were there and the food did not last long. Not with 3 hungry kids devouring it all.

After lunch, our parents took their usual picnic nap while we kids went off to find some adventure. We went to the zoo, it was still there when I was young, and the aquarium. As we looked at each animal we conjured up daydreams of what it would be liked living in a time before our parent’s day.

When it came time to go home, I walked slowly, not wanting to lose one minute of this special day. We do not get to Stanley Park very often and I wanted to make the most of it.

I hope you like my writing on “a Picnic I Enjoyed”. Feel free to comment on your thoughts regarding this essay. I would love to hear from you!

The “Epic Row” Over a New Epoch

By Elizabeth Kolbert

An image of an Australian landscape painted over with orange and red.

A few months into the third millennium, a group called the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (I.G.B.P.) held a meeting in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Among the researchers in attendance was Paul Crutzen, an atmospheric chemist best known for his research on ozone-depleting chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons. For this work, Crutzen, a Dutchman living in Germany, had received a Nobel Prize, in 1995. In his Nobel lecture, he noted that, given humanity’s heedlessness, it had got off lightly. Millions of pounds of CFCs had been released into the air before anyone had considered the possible consequences. As a result of the chemicals’ behavior in the stratosphere, a “hole” had opened up in the ozone layer over Antarctica. But, if CFCs had turned out to behave just slightly differently, the hole would have stretched from pole to pole before scientists had even had the tools to measure it.

“I can only conclude that mankind has been extremely lucky,” Crutzen said.

At the I.G.B.P. meeting in Cuernavaca, Crutzen found himself growing agitated. His colleagues kept referring to the Holocene, the geological epoch that began at the close of the last ice age, about twelve thousand years ago. At the dawn of the Holocene, the global population was maybe four million—barely enough to fill a city like Sydney or St. Petersburg. By the time of the meeting in Mexico, there were more than six billion people on the planet, and human activity was fundamentally altering such basic Earth processes as the carbon cycle.

“Stop using the word ‘Holocene,’ ” Crutzen blurted out. “We’re not in the Holocene any more. We’re in the . . . ” He paused, searching for the right word. “We’re in the Anthropocene!” During the next coffee break, Crutzen’s neologism was the main topic of conversation. Someone suggested that he copyright the term.

As it turned out, the Anthropocene wasn’t Crutzen’s to claim. Eugene Stoermer, a biologist at the University of Michigan, had coined the word back in the nineteen-eighties, out of much the same frustration. Crutzen got in touch with Stoermer, and the two wrote an essay for the I.G.B.P. newsletter, laying out their case for a new age. Human activities, the pair argued, were altering the planet faster and more dramatically than the geological forces that had shaped it for most of its history.

“It seems to us more than appropriate to emphasize the central role of mankind” by using “the term ‘anthropocene’ for the current geological epoch,” the pair wrote. Not many people read the I.G.B.P. newsletter, so in 2002 Crutzen refashioned the essay for the journal Nature . He listed some of the ways that humans were altering the planet: chopping down rain forests, messing with the climate, and manufacturing novel chemicals, such as CFCs. Once again, Crutzen stressed how fortunate humanity had been so far. Had the ozone layer sustained more damage, large parts of the world could have been rendered uninhabitable. “More by luck than by wisdom, this catastrophic situation did not develop,” he observed.

Many researchers found Crutzen and Stoermer’s term useful. Soon the word “Anthropocene” began popping up in scientific papers. This, in turn, piqued the interest of stratigraphers—the subset of geologists who maintain the planet’s official timetable, the International Chronostratigraphic Chart. Had the Earth really entered a new epoch, in the stratigraphic sense of the term? And, if so, when? The International Commission on Stratigraphy (I.C.S.) set up the Anthropocene Working Group (A.W.G.) to look into the matter. It was still working away last month, when, in a vote that one group member described to me as “Putinesque,” a subcommittee of the I.C.S. decided against adding the Anthropocene to the timetable. The vote might have marked the end of the story, were it not that it was probably just the beginning. As another geologist put it to me, “Voting down the Anthropocene is a bit like trying to vote down plate tectonics. It’s real, it’s there, and we are going to have to deal with it.”

Stratigraphers are used to thinking in vast stretches of time. The International Chronostratigraphic Chart starts with the Hadean eon, which began with the birth of the planet, 4.5 billion years ago. The Hadean lasted five hundred million years and was succeeded by the Archean eon, which went on (and on and on) for 1.5 billion years. The Permian period spanned nearly fifty million years, the Cretaceous period eighty million. Within these periods there were many sub-periods—technically known as epochs—which also lasted a long time. The Cisuralian epoch of the Permian, for example, stretched over twenty-six million years.

But, the closer the chart gets to the present, the narrower the divisions become. The second most recent geological period, the Neogene, lasted just twenty million years. The current period, the Quaternary, began with the start of the ice ages, a mere 2.58 million years ago. The Quaternary is further divided into two epochs—the Pleistocene, which spanned 2.57 million years, and the Holocene, which, for now, is still ongoing.

To mark the boundaries between the various epochs and periods, the I.C.S. relies on what are formally called “global boundary stratotype sections and points” and informally known as “golden spikes.” For the most part, golden spikes are layers of rock that contain evidence of some notable shift in Earth’s history—a reversal of the planet’s magnetic poles, say, or the disappearance of a fossilized species. The golden spike for the start of the Triassic period, for example, is a layer of rock found in Meishan, China, and the shift it records is a mass extinction that killed off something like ninety per cent of all species on Earth. (The Chinese have set up a park in Meishan, where visitors can view the two-hundred-and-fifty-million-year-old rock layer in an exposed cliffside.) With golden spikes, again, the closer you get to the present, the more the present intrudes. In the case of the Holocene, the golden spike is a layer in an ice core from Greenland that’s stored in a freezer in Copenhagen. The layer consists of the compressed remains of snow that fell eleven thousand seven hundred years ago, which corresponds to the end of a cold snap known as the Younger Dryas.

With the exception of the Holocene, the start dates for geological ages have been determined millions of years after the fact. This means that whatever signal is being used to set them has withstood the test of time. The rocks of the Anthropocene, of course, do not yet exist. When the Anthropocene Working Group was formed, in 2009, its first task was to decide whether human impacts on the planet would still be discernible millions of years from now.

After several years of study, the group decided that the answer was yes. The carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels will leave a permanent signature in the rocks of the future, as will the fallout from nuclear testing. Novel ecosystems that people have created by moving plants and animals around the world will produce novel fossil assemblages. Meanwhile, traces of some of the trillions of tons of stuff humans have generated, from transistors to tanker ships, will be preserved, meaning that a whole new class of fossils will appear in the record—so-called technofossils. Before aluminum smelting was invented, in the nineteenth century, aluminum existed on Earth only in combination with other elements. Future geologists will thus be able to distinguish the current epoch via the remains of beer cans—the Bud Light layer.

These and other “distinctive attributes of the recent geological record support the formalization of the Anthropocene as a stratigraphic entity,” members of the A.W.G. noted in a paper that appeared in Science in 2016.

When Crutzen and Stoermer initially proposed the Anthropocene, they suggested that it had begun with the first stirrings of the Industrial Revolution, in the late eighteenth century. The A.W.G. considered this possibility, but ultimately rejected it. In the decades following the Second World War, resource consumption skyrocketed—a development that’s become known as the Great Acceleration. The fantastic growth in the production of new materials such as aluminum and plastic, the group decided, made a date closer to 1950 a more logical starting point for the new epoch.

Last summer, under pressure from the International Commission on Stratigraphy to finish its work, the A.W.G. announced its proposal for a golden spike. It chose a marker similar to the one used for the base of the Holocene, although, in this case, the core came not from an ice sheet but from a lake bottom.

Crawford Lake, which is about thirty miles southwest of Toronto, is what’s known as meromictic, which means that its top and bottom waters don’t mix. As a result of this and other unusual qualities, everything that falls into the lake, from pollen grains to radioactive particles, gets preserved in layers of sediment that can be very precisely dated. The idea was to designate the base of the Anthropocene as the layer of Crawford Lake sediment laid down in 1952—and, more specifically, as the 1952 layer preserved in one particular core kept in a freezer in Quebec. (The United States conducted the first H-bomb tests in 1952, and the fallout from these clearly shows up in the lake bed as a spike in plutonium.) The working group announced its choice of the Crawford Lake core while stratigraphers from around the world were gathered for a conference in Lille, France. But, in a sign of things to come, the group was barred from making the announcement at the conference hall and had to rent a room in a nearby hotel.

A photograph of a forested cliff in Australia painted over with blue shades

In the roughly two and a half centuries since the field of geology was founded, debates over dividing time have often turned nasty. In the eighteen-thirties, for example, several of Britain’s most prominent geologists traded insults in a dispute over rocks from what’s now known as the Devonian period, some four hundred million years ago. One of the parties to the controversy, Henry De la Beche, was a talented artist, and he lampooned his critics in a cartoon that pictured them facing a man with a large nose.

“This, gentlemen, is my nose,” the man says.

“My dear fellow!” the critics respond. “Your account of yourself generally may be very well, but as we have classed you, before we saw you, among men without noses, you cannot possibly have a nose.”

More recently, a fight over whether the Quaternary period should be absorbed into the Neogene caused a rift in the geological community that took many years—and almost as many votes—to resolve. (At one point, the International Union of Geological Sciences [I.U.G.S.], the parent organization of the International Commission on Stratigraphy, withheld funding from the I.C.S. over its handling of the dispute.) The Quaternary managed to survive, but many geologists who work on the Neogene viewed the decision as wrongheaded, and, after the final vote was taken, in 2009, petitioned to have it overturned.

“You come to the Neogene-Quaternary boundary, and there is nothing there,” one stratigrapher complained to Nature .

Even given this history, the fight over the Anthropocene has been a bitter one. On one side are those geologists who argue, à la Stoermer and Crutzen, that human activity has so altered the planet that it no longer makes sense to say we live in the Holocene. The most outspoken members of this camp tend—perhaps not surprisingly—to be members of the Anthropocene Working Group.

“To suddenly have these changes and still call it the Holocene, it becomes a little bit like the way some oceanographers talk about coral reefs,” Jan Zalasiewicz, a British geologist who led the Anthropocene Working Group for many years, told me. “It’s become a kind of zombie epoch. It’s formally still here, but the conditions that characterized it no longer exist.”

In the other camp are those who argue that the Anthropocene, pretty much by definition, lies outside the purview of stratigraphy.

“The stratigraphic record is the past,” Stanley Finney, a geologist at California State University who’s also the secretary-general of the International Union of Geological Sciences, wrote with Lucy Edwards, a stratigrapher with the U.S. Geological Survey. The Anthropocene, by contrast, “is the present and future.”

“It’s something we would need to look back on to understand whether this boundary has a function,” Philip Gibbard, a professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge who’s now the secretary-general of the I.C.S., told me. “Those who propose the boundary would say, Well, the Anthropocene is going to continue on into the future. But I’m afraid we don’t deal with the future as geologists. We only deal with what's preserved in the rock record.”

The simmering conflict came to a boil this past winter. As with many such disputes, this one morphed from a substantive argument into a procedural one. The members of the A.W.G. felt that they’d been railroaded by the I.C.S. into submitting a formal proposal before they were ready to. They also complained that, in the run-up to the vote, Anthropocene proponents, including Zalasiewicz, had been sidelined. (At the time, Zalasiewicz was the chairman of the voting subcommittee—the I.C.S.’s Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy [S.Q.S.]—and the vote was held over his objections.)

“It was like a palace coup, basically,” Colin Waters, the chairman of the A.W.G. at the time, told me.

The final tally—twelve against declaring a new epoch, four in favor, and two abstentions—was released to the Times before most members of the A.W.G. had learned of it. Zalasiewicz—who, along with one of the other subcommittee members, had refused to cast a ballot—questioned the legitimacy of the tally on several grounds, including the fact that he, the chair, had not called it. His objections were quickly brushed aside by the I.C.S.’s governing board.

“ Quest to declare Anthropocene an epoch descends into epic row ,” a headline in the Guardian read.

“I can assure you that the claims that have been made by certain members of the Anthropocene Working Group are rubbish,” Gibbard, who, in addition to serving on the I.C.S. executive board, is a member of the Quaternary subcommission, told me. “They’re just sore losers. The trouble is that the Anthropocene Working Group had developed into nothing more than a—what can I say?—kind of a cult.”

In the interest of full disclosure, I should note that I am an Anthropocene partisan. This is not to say I have any particular knowledge of stratigraphy (though, with Zalasiewicz, I once visited the golden spike for the base of the Silurian period, a layer of rock in a cliffside in Scotland). It’s that I find the Anthropocene a helpful neologism—indeed, a necessary one. It’s a succinct way of communicating a messy and profoundly consequential reality. Human activity has become the major driver of change on Earth. And many of the ways in which we’re transforming the planet—by driving once-widespread species extinct or spreading microplastics around the globe—are irreversible across timescales both human and geological.

The term’s utility is, presumably, the reason that it was so widely adopted following Crutzen’s outburst. And its wide adoption, in turn, helps to explain why the recent I.C.S. debate became so charged.

Most laypeople don’t much care about, say, the start date of the Pleistocene. (It was recently moved back almost eight hundred thousand years.) Such abstruse questions seem far removed from present-day concerns. But the debate about the Anthropocene is about the present. It’s where stratigraphy meets the news cycle. Long before the I.C.S. had a chance to rule on it, the Anthropocene had become the subject of movies, books, and art exhibitions. The work of the A.W.G., meanwhile, was generously covered in the press. When the working group announced its decision to plant a golden spike in Crawford Lake, outlets from the Hindustan Times to Deutsche Welle ran stories on the choice.

Many geologists born before the proposed Anthropocene start date seem to have begrudged the would-be time period all this attention. “The Anthropocene epoch was pushed through the media from the beginning—a publicity drive,” Finney, the I.U.G.S. secretary-general, observed to Science dismissively.

The future of the Anthropocene as an official stratigraphic unit is, at this point, unclear. The A.W.G. dissolved after the vote, but, as several members of the group pointed out to me, the leadership of the I.C.S. is due to turn over this summer, after the quadrennial International Geological Congress, set to take place in South Korea. Kim Cohen, a Dutch geologist who, at fifty, is one of the younger members of the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy and who cast a “yes” vote for the new epoch, told me that he expects to see the Anthropocene added to the geological timescale within his life.

“I think many of my fellow S.Q.S. members will not see it,” he added by way of clarification.

But the Anthropocene’s future as an informal time period is assured. It’s too apt—and too important—a term to be abandoned. As Paul Crutzen pointed out in 2002, barring a “meteorite impact, a world war or a pandemic,” humans “will remain a major environmental force for many millennia.” Science recently summed up the situation this way: “ The Anthropocene is dead. Long live the Anthropocene .”

Crutzen died in 2021, so it’s impossible to know what he would have said about the recent I.C.S. vote. I imagine, though, that he would have responded to it much as he did to a question I posed to him back in 2010. What was important about the Anthropocene, he told me at that time, was not whether it was included in geology texts, but whether it prompted people to think more carefully about the consequences of their collective actions.

“What I hope,” he said, “is that the term ‘Anthropocene’ will be a warning to the world.” ♦

Statement from President Joe   Biden on Protecting Alaska’s Arctic Lands, Waters, and   Wildlife

Alaska’s majestic and rugged lands and waters are among the most remarkable and healthy landscapes in the world, sustaining a vibrant subsistence economy for Alaska Native communities. These natural wonders demand our protection. I am proud that my Administration is taking action to conserve more than 13 million acres in the Western Arctic and to honor the culture, history, and enduring wisdom of Alaska Natives who have lived on and stewarded these lands since time immemorial. From safeguarding sacred lands near the Grand Canyon to protecting Alaskan treasures, my Administration has conserved more than 41 million acres of lands and waters. But as the climate crisis imperils communities across the country, more must be done. My Administration will continue to take ambitious action to meet the urgency of the climate crisis, protect America’s lands and waters, and fulfill our responsibility to the next generation of Americans.

A Holiday for Weed Fans, Complete With Sponsors

With the legalization of marijuana in New York, celebrations of “4/20” have gone mainstream.

In the culture of cannabis, April 20 is a holiday when those who partake light up in enjoyment and in protest of prohibition.

Although the origins of “4/20” are debated — according to popular lore, a group of California high school students in the 1970s met after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke weed — the day has been globally celebrated for years.

Until recently in New York, celebrations carried the risk of arrest or fines, so they would often take place in secret locations or places where the authorities were somewhat lenient, like Washington Square Park. Smoke-ins were sometimes staged as a form of protest. In 2020, the police busted a pot party in Manhattan, not because people were smoking weed but because they were flouting social-distancing rules during the pandemic.

But since the state legalized marijuana in 2021 and lifted pandemic restrictions, the protests have largely subsided. And a growing number of celebrations — some with brand sponsors — have emerged, catering to users new and old as well as people who are just “canna-curious.”

This year, as the state’s legal cannabis industry has expanded and cannabis use has gained acceptance, the variety of events has expanded. In addition to private parties and smokeouts, there are comedy shows and block parties. Happy Munkey, an events company, is hosting a cruise aboard a Hornblower vessel.

Not all events are focused on consuming cannabis. A workshop at MARY Fest, a new event in Brooklyn whose name plays on one of weed’s monikers, Mary Jane, teaches participants how to grow cannabis at home. Upside Pizza collaborated with Gotham, a dispensary on the Bowery in Lower Manhattan, on a secret menu. And Trends, a dispensary in Long Island City, is streaming the N.B.A. playoffs and serving chicken wings.

Dabs and Lattes

If you have seen the YouTube talk show “Hot Ones,” in which the hosts interview celebrities as they eat increasingly hot chicken wings, then you understand the concept of “Hot Dabs,” a podcast whose most recent episode was recorded with an audience on Saturday at a cannabis-friendly co-working space in Manhattan.

Instead of eating meat, the hosts and guests of the podcast take increasingly hot dabs. Dabbing is a method of consuming weed that involves placing marijuana concentrate in a glass rig, heating it until it evaporates, then inhaling it.

At Saturday’s event, called Dabs and Lattes, the guest was J.P. Toro, a celebrated rig maker whose creations can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

A haze hung over the room as the host, Dustan Mipuck, who goes by Hashaveli, asked Mr. Toro about his first experience dabbing. In the crowd, made up mostly of men from out of town, people who had brought their own rigs and lighters chose from resins with names like Morocco Peaches and paired them with coffee prepared at a bar inside the co-working space, Work’n’Roll, in Chelsea.

Justin Page, 41, brought Raincatcher No. 21, a rig in the shape of a nude woman with purple leaves for hair who is catching a raindrop with an opal inside.

Mr. Page, an event producer in Missouri, said that New York seemed to be overtaking California as the top destination for cannabis enthusiasts on 4/20 because of the growth of established brands and the city’s largely untamed market. (New York is rife with unlicensed weed shops .)

“It’s wild out here,” he said, adding that New York “is growing on me.”

Wake and Bike

Some inveterate weed consumers prefer to “wake and bake,” slang for smoking upon arising. For the more active set, this year’s 4/20 festivities in New York City have also included a “Wake and Bike” ride.

Shortly before 11 Saturday morning, a group led by Social Cycling NYC, an informal collective of bikers who usually ride together on Thursday nights, peeled off from near Central Park on a 19-mile ride. The group wound down through Manhattan and crossed the Manhattan Bridge, finally settling at Hunters Point South Park in Queens.

On a grassy hill with expansive views of the city skyline, some people lit up joints and ate snacks. Paulo Garcia, a Filipino immigrant who lives in East Harlem, said the bike ride brought together two interests that were dangerous to enjoy in his homeland: biking and smoking weed.

In the Philippines, said Mr. Garcia, 41, there is no infrastructure for biking, like designated lanes, and the government has waged a violent campaign against the use of marijuana and other drugs that are illegal there.

“People were asking me, Why are you so stoked?” he said. “I came from a country where they kill you for smoking weed.”

New York had decriminalized low-level possession of cannabis by the time Justin Bloomfield, 20, a native of Brooklyn, started smoking in high school. He would hide it from his mother, he said, the same way that generations before him hid their use from the authorities.

But now, he said, he feels free to use it publicly even though he is two weeks shy of the minimum legal age.

“I have the luxury of being able to walk outside whenever I want to, roll up whenever I want to and smoke wherever I want to,” he said.

However, he said it would be nice to have more designated spaces to smoke weed in places like parks and bars. Regulators have not issued licenses for consumption lounges or events yet.

Learning to Roll and Grow

At MARY Fest, in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Krys Wolf, a professional joint-roller, was one of the biggest draws. A line of patrons waited as Ms. Wolf rolled, sealed and bedazzled their blunts with rhinestones in her signature look.

In a small room to the side, Maxence Majot prepared to teach a workshop on growing cannabis at home. New York finalized regulations this spring that let residents keep six plants, three mature and three immature, in their homes.

Michelle Sajous, 61, already had the right, as a medical cannabis patient, and she decided it was time to learn. She is part of a team opening a dispensary in the Bronx at Co-op City, the housing complex where she is also a manager.

“Let’s get it going,” said Ms. Sajous, who had her lower left leg amputated in 2019 because of complications of diabetes. “I’ve been smoking for 50 years,” she added. “It’s about time I get my own stuff.”

At 4:20, Movement and Chill

Eric Mosley, 34, a yoga instructor, stretched his arms to the sky on the lawn of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, where a dozen or so people wearing headphones and sitting on picnic blankets followed him through the motions. The picnic was hosted by Flamer, a queer-themed weed brand.

Around them, hundreds of people — friends, roommates, relatives — passed joints and munched on cookies and chips. Nick Brown, 31, and Kim Vivas, 29, who are partners, shared with their friends, Keilley Banks, 25, and Han Hansen, 26.

Mr. Brown and Ms. Vivas, who identify as Afro-Latino, said their bond included the shared experience of having fathers who were jailed over marijuana. Ms. Vivas, whose father died in 2016, said that being able to smoke in the open gave her “a sense of vengeance or revenge.”

Mr. Brown agreed, adding that as a man of color who might otherwise be targeted by the police, it “feels cool not being arrested for enjoying this.”

A round of applause erupted as Mr. Mosley finished his yoga session. In an interview, he explained that as cannabis gained acceptance, many wellness practitioners began incorporating it into their sessions.

“It’s legitimizing a practice that many marginalized people, people of color, have used for healing,” he said. “There’s work to be done to make it more equitable, but it’s a really good start.”

As the sun descended, the attendees trickled out of the park. But the festivities were far from over.

The evening’s events include a comedy show with an all-female lineup and parties at newer venues like the city’s cannabis museum, THC NYC, and well-known ones like Terminal 5.

The session was ending, but the night was young.

An earlier version of this article misstated the location of the dispensary named Trends. It is in Long Island City, not on Long Island.

NPR editor Uri Berliner resigns with blast at new CEO

Uri Berliner resigned from NPR on Wednesday saying he could not work under the new CEO Katherine Maher. He cautioned that he did not support calls to defund NPR.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner resigned this morning, citing the response of the network's chief executive to his outside essay accusing NPR of losing the public's trust.

"I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years," Berliner wrote in an email to CEO Katherine Maher. "I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay."

NPR and Maher declined to comment on his resignation.

The Free Press, an online site embraced by journalists who believe that the mainstream media has become too liberal, published Berliner's piece last Tuesday. In it, he argued that NPR's coverage has increasingly reflected a rigid progressive ideology. And he argued that the network's quest for greater diversity in its workforce — a priority under prior chief executive John Lansing – has not been accompanied by a diversity of viewpoints presented in NPR shows, podcasts or online coverage.

Later that same day, NPR pushed back against Berliner's critique.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff . "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

Yet Berliner's commentary has been embraced by conservative and partisan Republican critics of the network, including former President Donald Trump and the activist Christopher Rufo.

Rufo is posting a parade of old social media posts from Maher, who took over NPR last month. In two examples, she called Trump a racist and also seemed to minimize the effects of rioting in 2020. Rufo is using those to rally public pressure for Maher's ouster, as he did for former Harvard University President Claudine Gay .

Others have used the moment to call for the elimination of federal funding for NPR – less than one percent of its roughly $300 million annual budget – and local public radio stations, which derive more of their funding from the government.

Berliner reiterated in his resignation letter that he does not support such calls.

In a brief interview, he condemned a statement Maher issued Friday in which she suggested that he had questioned "whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity." She called that "profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning."

Berliner subsequently exchanged emails with Maher, but she did not address those comments.

"It's been building up," Berliner said of his decision to resign, "and it became clear it was on today."

For publishing his essay in The Free Press and appearing on its podcast, NPR had suspended Berliner for five days without pay. Its formal rebuke noted he had done work outside NPR without its permission, as is required, and shared proprietary information.

(Disclosure: Like Berliner, I am part of NPR's Business Desk. He has edited many of my past stories. But he did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Earlier in the day, Berliner forwarded to NPR editors and other colleagues a note saying he had "never questioned" their integrity and had been trying to raise these issues within the newsroom for more than seven years.

What followed was an email he had sent to newsroom leaders after Trump's 2016 win. He wrote then: "Primarily for the sake of our journalism, we can't align ourselves with a tribe. So we don't exist in a cocoon that blinds us to the views and experience of tens of millions of our fellow citizens."

Berliner's critique has inspired anger and dismay within the network. Some colleagues said they could no longer trust him after he chose to publicize such concerns rather than pursue them as part of ongoing newsroom debates, as is customary. Many signed a letter to Maher and Edith Chapin, NPR's chief news executive. They asked for clarity on, among other things, how Berliner's essay and the resulting public controversy would affect news coverage.

Yet some colleagues privately said Berliner's critique carried some truth. Chapin also announced monthly reviews of the network's coverage for fairness and diversity - including diversity of viewpoint.

She said in a text message earlier this week that that initiative had been discussed long before Berliner's essay, but "Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it."

She added, "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."

250 Words Essay on My Picnic

Introduction.

Picnics are an escape from the daily grind, offering a chance to connect with nature while fostering stronger relationships. They provide a refreshing break from the monotonous routine of life, serving as a doorway to relaxation and rejuvenation.

The Journey

Our journey began at dawn. The excitement was palpable as we packed our picnic baskets with homemade sandwiches, fruits, and refreshing beverages. We embarked on our adventure towards the picturesque countryside, the destination being a serene lakeside spot, nestled amidst lush greenery.

Activities and Interactions

Upon reaching, we were greeted by the tranquil beauty of nature. The chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves created a symphony that soothed our city-weary souls. We engaged in various activities – from playing frisbee to swimming in the cool lake. The picnic also served as an opportunity for intellectual exchanges. We discussed literature, politics, and philosophy, learning from each other’s perspectives.

The Picnic Feast

As the sun reached its zenith, we laid out our picnic spread. The food tasted even better in the open air, the flavors enhanced by the joy of sharing and the beauty of our surroundings. Post-lunch, we indulged in a brief siesta, basking in the warm sun.

As the day ended, we packed our belongings, leaving the spot as untouched as we had found it. The picnic was not just a day off, but a reminder of the simple pleasures of life – good food, great company, and the therapeutic beauty of nature. It was an experience that left us rejuvenated and ready to face the challenges of academic life.

500 Words Essay on My Picnic

Picnics are a timeless tradition that allows us to step away from the monotony of everyday life and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. They provide a unique opportunity to bond with friends, family, or colleagues, while enjoying the tranquillity and splendour of the great outdoors.

The Anticipation

The anticipation of a picnic is as delightful as the event itself. It begins with the selection of a picturesque location, often a lush green park, a serene beach, or the banks of a calm river. The choice of location sets the tone for the day, and the very thought of spending time in such beautiful surroundings instills a sense of excitement and joy. The planning phase also involves deciding on the food and games, which are integral to the overall picnic experience.

Preparation and Journey

The preparation for a picnic is a fun-filled activity in itself. The bustle of packing a variety of delicious food items, the selection of games and sports equipment, and the arrangement of travel logistics are all part of the thrill. The journey to the picnic spot is filled with laughter, singing, and sharing of stories, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and bonding.

The Picnic Experience

Arriving at the picnic spot, the beauty of nature unfolds in front of our eyes, providing a sense of peace and relaxation. The spread of food, from sandwiches to fruits, from cookies to cold drinks, is a feast for the eyes and the palate. The joy of sharing food in the open air, under the canopy of the sky, is an experience that cannot be replicated indoors.

Games and sports are an essential part of the picnic experience. They infuse an element of fun and excitement, while also promoting teamwork and sportsmanship. From frisbee to football, from hide and seek to treasure hunt, the games add an element of thrill to the picnic.

Reflection and Conclusion

As the day winds down, the setting sun paints the sky with hues of orange and pink, signaling the end of a memorable day. This is the time for reflection, for sitting quietly and soaking in the beauty of nature, for appreciating the joy of togetherness.

Picnics are not just about food and games; they provide an escape from our daily routine, a chance to connect with nature, and an opportunity to strengthen our bonds with others. They remind us to appreciate the simple pleasures of life and to make time for leisure and relaxation. As the saying goes, “Life is a picnic on a beach, not a trip to the beach.” So, let’s embrace the picnic spirit and make the most of the beautiful world around us.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.
