Google Pixel Event 2023: Watch the Pixel 8 series reveal live

The biggest question at this point is whether Google has any more surprises up its sleeve. The company appears to have announced everything about the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2 but the price. And even that appears to have been revealed amid a torrent of leaks. For a better idea of what we’re expecting from the big show, go check our our rumor roundup over here .

The CliffsNotes version is a 6.2-inch Pixel 8 and 6.8-inch Pixel 8 Pro, both with significantly brighter displays that would be easier to see in direct sunlight. Other potential additions include a thermometer sensor/app and improved imaging (naturally). The Watch 2, meanwhile is expected to be getting an electrodermal sensor to perform stress-level scans similar to those available on the Fitbit Versa.

Google is gearing up to launch a new lineup of Pixel products during its upcoming Made by Google event. Even though Google has already said that it will reveal the Pixel 8 alongside the updated Pixel Watch 2, it may have some other surprises in store.

If you’re interested in watching the event, here’s when and where you can tune in as well as what exactly you can expect.

How to watch the Made by Google event

The Google Pixel event will take place on October 4th, 2023, starting at 10AM ET / 7AM PT. Google will host an in-person audience at the event’s New York City venue, but you can follow along by watching the livestream on Google’s website , YouTube channel , or via the video embedded at the top of this article.

All-around upgrades for the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro

The new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will headline this year’s Made by Google event, with both devices featuring some notable upgrades over their predecessors. After a series of leaks , Google released an official teaser showing off the lineup, confirming some of the rumors we’ve been hearing over the past several months.

So far, leaks suggest that the Pixel 8 Pro will come with the same 6.7-inch display as the Pixel 7 Pro. Meanwhile, the base Pixel 8 is expected to have a smaller display than its predecessor, measuring 6.17 inches as opposed to 6.3 inches. A spec sheet spotted by leaker Kamila Wojciechowska shows that the Pixel 8 Pro could come with an upgraded rear camera array, featuring a 50MP wide lens, a 48MP ultrawide lens with Macro Focus, and a 48MP camera with a 5x telephoto lens. The Pixel 8 Pro may even have a body temperature reading feature as an added plus.

Meanwhile, the standard Pixel 8 is rumored to come with a 50MP wide camera on its rear, along with a 12MP ultrawide lens with Macro Focus. The leaked spec sheet says that both devices will have a 10.5MP front-facing camera, which is slightly lower than the 10.8MP selfie camera that came on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro could also support staggered HDR , a technique that could result in clearer images, along with DSLR-style controls . Additionally, leaked ads tease an array of AI-powered photo editing features coming to the Pixel 8 lineup, including Magic Editor and a not-yet-announced feature called “Best Take.”

The spec sheet also suggests that the two smartphones will be powered by Google’s new Tensor G3 chip, offering 8GB of RAM on the Pixel 8 and 12GB on the Pixel 8 Pro. Their displays could also offer a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, an upgrade over the 90Hz screen on the Pixel 7. Other leaks indicate that Google will offer seven years of software support for its latest Pixel lineup and may even include a free Pixel Watch 2 with the purchase of a Pixel 8 Pro .

Google still hasn’t confirmed the pricing on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro just yet, but rumors indicate that both models could be getting a price hike. 9to5Google reports that the Pixel 8 will cost $699 (up from the $599 Pixel 7), with the Pixel 8 Pro coming with a $999 price tag (up from the $899 Pixel 7 Pro). Renders obtained by MySmartPrice give us a potential look at the different color options for both devices, which include gray, black, and pink for the Pixel 8 and sky blue, porcelain, and black for the Pixel 8 Pro.

The Pixel Watch 2 gets a new crown and revamped sensor array

Not only did Google show off a sneak peek of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro but it also released a preview of the new Pixel Watch 2 . In the teaser, you can see glimpses of the Pixel Watch 2’s new crown that sits flatter against the watch’s side. The bottom of the device, however, shows a new sensor array that could hint at the addition of more health tracking features.

Leaked specs shared with 91mobiles suggest that the Pixel Watch 2 could adopt some of the same features offered by Google’s Fitbit fitness trackers. That includes a new heart rate tracker that uses Fitbit’s multi-path heart rate sensor that checks your heart rate in more ways and places. It may even incorporate Fitbit’s stress management system that uses a cEDA (continuous electrodermal activity) sensor to help detect when you’re feeling stressed. You can see how this feature might look in an image shared by leaker Evan Blass .

Other features listed by 91mobiles include a way for the watch to automatically detect new exercises, including running and outdoor cycling, as well as a new Safety Check option that lets you set a timer if you feel that you’re in an unsafe situation. When the timer runs out, the watch will ask you to confirm whether you’re safe or if you would like it to share your location with emergency services, according to 91mobiles . If you don’t respond, it will automatically share your location with your emergency contacts.

According to Android Authority , the Pixel Watch 2 may feature an upgraded Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor and an ultra wideband chip. Outside of all this, not much else is changing. The Pixel Watch 2 is rumored to have the same up to 24 hours of battery life as its predecessor and will also retain a similar design, aside from the rumored swap to an all-aluminum chassis .

We don’t know how much the Pixel Watch 2 will cost just yet or whether it’ll be more expensive than the original $350 Pixel Watch. The Pixel Watch 2 is rumored to come in gold, black, or silver color options.

Pixel Buds Pro in new colors

In addition to a new Pixel phone and smartwatch, Google is also rumored to reveal some new colors for the Pixel Buds Pro. During another teaser for its Made by Google event, the company briefly shows a case for the Pixel Buds Pro in a porcelain case to match its new Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel 8 Pro.

This might not be the only new color the Pixel Buds Pro are getting, as a report from 9to5Google suggests that they may also come in a sky blue color, too. However, it’s still not clear whether Google will make any changes to the design of the buds themselves or the hardware powering them.

The release of Android 14 — and maybe some new Pixel-only features?

Android 14 is expected to drop on October 4th — the same day as Google’s event. The latest version of the operating system is set to introduce a ton of new features , including passkeys, AI-generated wallpapers, larger text options, stylus enhancements, and maybe even the ability to use your phone as a webcam .

But that may not be all. It’s been over three months since Google last released a Pixel Feature drop, which means we’re overdue for an update. While the company was initially expected to release its next round of features in early September, it’s likely saving them up for its Made by Google event. What to expect from Google's Pixel 7 event on October 6th

The pixel 7 line and pixel watch are the clear stars of the show..

Google’s fall hardware event promises to be special this year. It not only marks the official debut of the Pixel 7, it will launch the company’s first self-branded smartwatch — the Pixel Watch. But what will those devices bring to the table, exactly? And will there be any surprises beyond that? We’re here to let you know what to expect when Google’s broadcast begins October 6th.

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

The meat of the presentation will probably focus on Google’s latest phones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro . An official preview at this spring’s I/O conference revealed that they’ll largely iterate on the Pixel 6 line. You can expect an updated but familiar-looking design with a seamless aluminum frame that extends to the camera bar. There will also be a new Tensor G2 chip that promises improved performance for media, speech recognition and other tasks. They’ll run Android 13 . The base model will have two rear cameras like the regular Pixel 6, while the Pro adds a third.

But what kind of performance improvements can you expect? Subtle ones, apparently. Prototype leaks hint the standard Pixel 7 will carry 8GB of RAM and start with 128GB of storage, much like its predecessor. A variety of pre-release scoops also suggest the Tensor G2 isn’t a dramatic leap forward, with slight improvements to graphics, power efficiency and clock speeds. Likewise, developer Kuba Wojciechowski claims the cameras will remain largely unchanged. There could be little reason to upgrade from a Pixel 6, then, although this year’s phone may be worth the investment if you’re coming from a Pixel 5 or earlier.

The biggest news might be what doesn’t change: the price. A rumor from Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii maintains that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will respectively start at the same $599 and $899 prices as last year’s phones. They’ll represent significant value for money if the report is true, particularly at a time when many device prices are creeping upwards .

It’s not certain just when the Pixel 7 range will reach customers. Pre-orders will start the day of the event, but Google hasn’t said when the phone will be available. WinFuture ’s Roland Quant has heard the devices will start shipping October 18th, though, so you may only have to wait a couple of weeks before the hardware reaches your hands.

Pixel Watch

The highlight for many, however, will be the Pixel Watch . It’s Google’s first official smartwatch, and promises to serve as a showcase for Wear OS 3. You can expect tight Fitbit integration that includes fitness, sleep and general health tracking. The company is taking some design cues from the Apple Watch with an upscale-looking case, a prominent crown and easily swapped (if proprietary) bands , but it’s using a circular display like many other Wear OS devices.

Google hasn’t shared much about what’s inside, but a prototype left in a restaurant points to heart rate, blood oxygen and ECG monitoring that might be borrowed from the Fitbit Charge 5 . We wouldn’t be surprised to see tap-to-pay Wallet functionality, either. 9to5Google sources believe the Pixel Watch might use a stock Samsung Exynos chip instead of a custom Tensor part, but that it might pack a large 2GB of RAM (even the Galaxy Watch has ‘just’ 1.5GB), 32GB of storage and a coprocessor that keeps battery life in check. Emulator code also points to the introduction of Google’s next-generation Assistant on Wear OS watches, although it’s not known just how the AI helper will evolve on your wrist.

As with the phones, Pixel Watch pre-orders should start October 6th. It’s not yet known if the hardware will ship at the same time as the Pixel 7, though, and established leaker Yogesh Brar warned of a possible “limited release” (that is, only in a few countries). You might have to pay a premium compared to other options, too. A 9to5Google price leak mentioned a $350 starting price, with a cellular version bumping the cost to $400. That’s significantly higher than the $280 Galaxy Watch 5 , and not far behind the $399 Apple Watch Series 8. The Pixel is clearly pitched as Android’s answer to the Apple Watch, and might be priced accordingly.

Wildcards: More Pixel device previews and Nest hardware

There haven’t been solid rumors of additional hardware at the event. Nonetheless, we wouldn’t rule it out. Few would have expected Google to preview the Pixel Tablet long before its 2023 release — it’s no longer out of the question that you might see a teaser for more products. But what, exactly? Besides more details for the tablet, there are longstanding murmurs of a foldable Pixel phone that might get an early peek. With that said, there’s no tangible evidence either Pixel product will make a cameo.

We also wouldn’t count on more Nest devices. Apart from a dearth of leaks, there are only so many things Google can do to upgrade some of its offerings, such as the audio-only Nest Mini and Nest Audio . That said, Google hasn’t touched some of its lineup for two or three years. The company may have an incentive to keep things fresh when Amazon just overhauled its smart home gear .

If there are any surprises, they’re most likely to involve AI-related features. At last year’s event, Google unveiled Pixel-first software tricks that included on-screen call center menus and as-you-type translation . A repeat wouldn’t be surprising this time around, even if some of those extras won’t require a Pixel in the future. Google used AI as a major selling point for the Pixel 6, and the sequel could easily get similar treatment.

It's that time of year again. Unlike many other Android manufacturers, Google saves its biggest phone launch for the tail end of the year, essentially getting a head start on next year with its latest Pixel flagships. This year is no different, although now, Google seems to have a good formula for its mobile hardware, making the Pixel more lineup popular than ever. Thus, there's more pressure to get it right.

After many rumors and leaks, we pretty much have a good idea of what to expect from Google's upcoming Pixel event . The company has already begun teasing its products, so it's not exactly a mystery at this point. However, if you haven't been paying close attention to the mobile sphere lately, then we've got you covered with a roundup of the announcements we expect to see at the upcoming Made by Google event. 

How to watch the Made by Google event

The Made by Google launch will take place on October 4 at 10 a.m. ET in New York City, where it will host a live, in-person event. However, for those of us who aren't lucky enough to attend, the company will livestream the event on both the Google Store website and on the official Made by Google YouTube channel.

Google Pixel 8

The highlight of the Pixel event will be the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro . These are Google's latest flagship phones that will further refine and build upon the design and experiences we saw with the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel 6 before it.

The design of the phones is similar to their predecessors, maintaining the iconic camera bar, but you'll notice the corners are more rounded. And while Google has yet to show off the displays, rumors tell us the Pixel 8 display will be slightly smaller at 6.17 inches, while the Pixel 8 Pro will move to a flat display instead of a curved one seen on previous Pro models.

Based on previous leaks, a new temperature sensor sits in the Pixel 8 Pro camera bar, although we're not entirely sure what Google's purpose for this is.

Internally, the phones will be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset, which should enable better performance and, hopefully, better efficiency and thermal management . It will also be the driving force for Google's new and improved AI features that we expect to arrive with the phones. These should provide plenty of new ways to edit and play with your photos and videos in ways we may not have expected.

Among these is an Audio Magic Eraser that was leaked earlier this year, which will allow users to adjust various audio elements in a video to highlight the sounds they want. We're also expecting to see the new Magic Editor that Google showed off at I/O 2023. This lets users move elements on an image around and even adjust select parts of a photo to better highlight certain aspects like the sky.

We've also seen leaks of an interesting new feature that will let users adjust the facial expressions of people in a photo, likely from multiple shots taken at the time of capture. Beyond that, we're expecting new video enhancement features, including Night Sight video, new manual controls for images, and all of the other Pixel features we've already come to know and love.

The phones are expected to sport new colors , such as a "Bay" blue hue and a Porcelain colorway to match the Pixel Fold .

Google Pixel Watch 2

The original Pixel Watch was a long time coming, but it still left a lot to be desired, particularly around battery life. With the new Pixel Watch 2 , it seems like Google might have solved that issue by ditching Samsung for Qualcomm this time around.

Rumors point to the new Pixel Watch 2 sporting the new Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset, which launched last year and has only been featured on a few phones thus far. This promises to bring improved performance and battery life , and it's a chip we hope to see grace more Wear OS smartwatches , so we're happy to see Google playing nice with Qualcomm.

Externally, the watch will look pretty identical to the first-generation Pixel Watch, albeit with some very subtle changes and a cool blue colorway for one of the watch band options, which nicely matches the Pixel 8 Pro. The device is said to feature new and upgraded health sensors akin to devices like the Fitbit Sense 2 and a revamped Fitbit app , which means the Pixel Watch 2 is inching closer to being the best Fitbit smartwatch on the market.

On the software front, the Pixel Watch 2 is expected to run Wear OS 4 , which has only been available on Samsung's Galaxy Watch series. It should bring better performance, an easier way to transfer to a new phone, and new apps like Gmail and Google Calendar.

Google Pixel Buds Pro

We expect this will be a smaller announcement since the Pixel Buds Pro are already available. However, per Google's teasers, the earbuds are expected to come in a new Porcelain colorway, and some leaks have also shown them off in a blue hue to match the other new Pixel devices.

In addition to new colors, it appears Google is set to include a new update that will bring additional features to the Pixel Buds Pro, such as Conversation Detection and low-latency audio.

Following a rumored delay, Google is likely to announce the stable Android 14 update at the Pixel event. This means that the new update could arrive on current Pixel phones before the new ones are in customers' hands.

Based on the near-stable betas, Android 14 isn't a particularly large update when compared to Android 13 . However, we've seen some welcome changes coming to accessibility, 10-bit HDR support, custom lock screens, and a no-integrated Health Connect for better management of your health data across apps.

Your home screen is also getting some exciting new features, allowing users to create a wallpaper using generative AI.

But beyond Android 14, we also expect more Pixel-exclusive features per the Pixel Ffature drop, which was also delayed and will likely be tied into the Android 14 update for Pixels. We expect this will bring additional options like an updated camera interface, but we'll see what else this new feature drop will bring when the update is announced.

Google pixel 8, google announces october 4 event for pixel 8 and pixel watch 2.

Google this morning announced that its annual Pixel hardware event will be on Wednesday, October 4.

Like last year, the event is taking place in New York City. The “Made by Google event” and keynote will be at 10 a.m. ET. Google will livestream the October 4 Pixel event on YouTube and the Google Store website.

The event itself is being announced just over a month before it takes place. (It also comes 24 hours after Apple shared its iPhone 15 event.) In 2022 , Google waited until the one-month mark before sending out invites, though that would fall on a holiday (Labor Day) next week.

Google Refines the Pixel 7 With Small but Welcome Changes

If last year's Pixel 6 was a leap, Google's new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones are a small hop. At its Made by Google event in New York City today, the company unboxed its two new flagship phones, both of which feature small but welcome improvements—like Face Unlock as a secondary way to authenticate your identity, and a Cinematic Blur feature that adds a portrait-like look to video footage.

The pair of Pixels aren't the only hardware releases at the event. Google also offered up more details about the Pixel Watch, the company's first-ever smartwatch, which you can read more about here .

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro cost $599 and $899, respectively, effectively staying the same price as last year's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro while still undercutting much of the competition . Here's everything that's new.

Pixel 7 comes in Obsidian, Snow, and Lemongrass.

Both new Pixels keep the same overall look Google debuted last year with the Pixel 6, except instead of an all-glass camera bar on the rear, it's now mostly aluminum. (Great news, considering my Pixel 6's camera bar is currently cracked.) The Pixel 7 comes in colors named Obsidian, Snow, and Lemongrass, and the Pixel 7 Pro comes in Obsidian, Snow, and Hazel. The colors and finish are a bit more muted than last year's devices, which is a little disappointing, but they certainly look more luxe. The Pro model employs polished aluminum, and the standard Pixel has a matte finish.

Two changes I like? The Pixel 7 is a tiny bit smaller and lighter than the Pixel 6, with a 6.3-inch screen (versus 6.4 inches). The Pixel 7 Pro sticks with the same 6.7-inch screen size, but the display glass has less of a curve along the edges, which Brian Rakowski, vice president of product management at Google, says was a change made in response to customer feedback. The screen is still not completely flat like on the Pixel 7, though. Speaking of screens, the only major change over last year is screen brightness. Google says these screens get up to 25 percent brighter when outdoors (1,400 nits peak brightness). 

There are no substantial changes to Google's battery life claims for these phones. The Pixel 7 has a smaller 4,355-mAh cell, which tracks considering its smaller size, and the Pixel 7 Pro has a 5,000-mAh battery—both of which are expected to last “beyond 24 hours" just like the Pixel 6 series. In my testing, last year's devices comfortably lasted a little more than a full day with heavy use, so you can expect the same here. These phones will charge up to 50 percent after 30 minutes of charging, which is slow compared to their peers . You can still recharge the new Pixels wirelessly too.

There's still an in-display fingerprint sensor, but it's not the only way to unlock the phone. Say hello to Face Unlock! You might remember that Google tried out this feature on the Pixel 4 , but this new version is … worse. Yes, it can unlock your phone and can't be spoofed by your own photo, but because Google isn't using an array of 3D sensors like Apple uses for Face ID, Google's solution is not as secure. So while Face Unlock gives you a quicker path to your home screen, you can't use the feature to authenticate payments or to sign into banking apps—you'll have to use your fingerprint for those. It feels a little half-baked, especially since the Pixel 4's Face Unlock was more secure. “We're not trying to claim it's the most secure thing ever,” Rakowski says.

The Pixel 7 Pro comes in Obsidian, Snow, and Hazel.

Pixel phones are known for their high-quality cameras, but it's difficult to say exactly how much better the cameras are on the Pixel 7 series over their predecessors without trying them out.

Both new phones feature the same 50-megapixel primary camera, and the Pixel 7 retains the same ultrawide lens, but the Pixel 7 Pro has a few tweaks to its other two cameras. The 48-megapixel telephoto now can hit 5X optical zoom, up from 4X, and the ultrawide has a wider field of view and features autofocus—which helps power a new Macro Focus mode for taking better photos of subjects up close. There's a new 10.8-megapixel front camera on both that's more “light sensitive," for better low-light selfies, but it's still a fixed-focus camera with no autofocus, unlike the iPhone 14 .

Speaking of Apple, this year's iPhone has a new 2X zoom that delivers high-quality 12-megapixel photos by utilizing the center portion of the large 48-megapixel camera sensor. It's effectively giving you a new optical zoom level without adding an extra camera. Google has a similar approach, meaning the 2X zoom button on both new Pixels will net you a clearer 12.5-megapixel image by utilizing the center section of the 50-megapixel camera.

Google has some improvements with Super Res Zoom for the Pixel 7 Pro too. When you pinch in and zoom into a photo without using the telephoto camera, you're digitally zooming in, which usually delivers lackluster details. Super Res Zoom, which debuted on the Pixel 3, uses machine intelligence to clean up the image for a sharper, better photo. It's even better now, as Google says the process fuses images from the telephoto and the primary camera to produce clearer photos in between optical zoom modes (between 1 and 5X zoom). This process continues as you go past the telephoto camera too, utilizing the full 48-megapixel resolution to net you much sharper images whether you're at 10X zoom or 30X zoom.

The new Tensor G2 chipset powering these Pixels (more on this later) allows for faster Night Sight photos, so you should expect fewer blurry shots in low light. Google says the Pixel's Real Tone camera feature, which automatically tweaks the image processing for people with darker skin for more accurate results, is tuned to be even better this year thanks to a broader dataset—especially when paired with Night Sight in low light. 

There's a new feature called Guided Frame, which will help visually impaired people take selfies, using audio cues in the camera app. And there's also a Pixel 7-exclusive feature in Google Photos called Photo Unblur—this will let you “unblur” old photos, specifically faces, no matter what camera you used to capture them. 

On the video side, Google says it has generally improved the image stabilization on the new Pixels, but these phones can now also shoot in 10-bit HDR (and at 24 frames per second), which should give your footage a broader range of colors. Don't forget the new Cinematic Blur mode, which is effectively what Portrait mode is for photos, but for video. You get a nice blur effect around a subject, though we'll have to see how well it stacks up against Apple's Cinematic Video. 

In today's presentation, Google didn't spend too much time talking about how much its new Tensor G2 chip has improved over its predecessor. The chipset has a few upgraded cores and a new graphics processing unit, but we'll have to run some tests ourselves to see how much more of an upgrade it is when it comes to handling graphically intensive games. It's the next-generation Tensor Processing Unit in the G2 that's helping to boost tasks that use machine learning, like the aforementioned 2X speed improvement to Night Sight photos.

This new second-gen TPU also enables a new feature: voice message transcription. Now when someone sends you a voice message, the Android Messages app will automatically transcribe it on your device so you don't need to play it back to get the content of the message. Unfortunately, it won't work on third-party apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. 

Also, this wouldn't be a new Pixel phone if it didn't come with a new way of managing voice calls. Google's Direct My Call function now will show up immediately whenever you call a top toll-free number, like your airline or insurance company. Instead of having to listen to a robotic voice going through a menu, the menu options will appear on the screen as soon as the call starts, and you just tap the one you want. Google is able to do this, the company says, because it has programmed its concierge-like Duplex phone call service to periodically dial these popular 1-800 numbers and cache the current menu options.

Google's Recorder app is also getting a small update: It can now differentiate between multiple speakers in a captured recording, adding labels for different speakers. After it's processed the recording, you can add each speaker's name manually and the app will update the whole transcript to properly identify each speaker in the text. Finally, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will exclusively come with a Google One VPN out of the box, no Google One subscription required. (Google says the VPN service will arrive on the web in the future, though it's been saying this for more than a year.)

These Pixels will get five years of security updates and, unfortunately, only three OS upgrades—below par for the Android world these days. Preorders start today , and the phones go on sale on October 13. Google says it will also keep selling the Pixel 6 until it goes out of stock.  It's worth noting that the first crop of last year's Pixel 6 phones had several major bugs out of the gate. Folks who bought a Pixel 6 at launch had to wait months for Google to resolve the issues via software updates. Rakowski says Google's test suite has gotten a lot more robust.  

“We have a lot more things that we're checking," he says. ”I think we're a lot smarter on what things people encounter in different situations, in different geographies. I feel good about everything that we learned from last year, which comes into this product too. Quality has been a big focus for us this year."

The bigger ultrawide lens delivers even better Macro Focus, the telephoto lens captures 56% more light and takes 10x photos at optical quality, and the front-facing camera now has autofocus for the best selfies on a Pixel phone.

And Pixel 8 has the same updated main camera, plus a new ultrawide lens that enables Macro Focus.

The camera app has an intuitive, redesigned interface, letting you quickly find and capture content in your favorite photo and video modes. And for Pixel 8 Pro, you’ll have access to Pro Controls, giving you more creative control of the Pixel Camera with settings like shutter speed, ISO, 50 MP photos throughout the zoom range and more.

You can reposition and resize subjects or use presets to make the background pop — all with just a few taps.

Audio Magic Eraser 1 lets you easily reduce distracting sounds in your video, like howling winds or noisy crowds. This first-of-its-kind computational audio capability uses advanced machine learning models to sort sounds into distinct layers so you can control their levels.

Google just made a huge company shakeup. Here's who's gaining power.

• Google is merging more parts of the company in an effort to move faster in AI.
• Google's DeepMind chief has gained more power, while the head of Pixel will also oversee Android.
• The changes put more firepower behind some key Google products, and could help it launch faster.

The Googleplex is in flux.

CEO Sundar Pichai announced a series of re-orgs in a memo to staff on Thursday, and — surprise, surprise — Google says it's all happening because of artificial intelligence .

Pichai said the changes, which include merging different parts of the company, would help Google "simplify decisions" and move faster.

This includes further merging its central AI teams. Last year, Google combined Brain, a group that sat within its AI Research group, with DeepMind to form a new super-unit that would be laser-focused on building AI models.

On Thursday, Pichai said that teams within Research that work on building AI models will also merge with Google DeepMind. The Responsible AI teams, which develop rules for safely and ethically developing AI, will also move from Research to Google DeepMind, he said.

All told, it gives more control to Demis Hassabis, who leads Google DeepMind. Before last year's merger, Hassabis ran DeepMind at arm's length from Google — a distance he had long fought to maintain — and now he is front and center of the company's AI push.

Hassabis has quickly become Google's MVP, with his unit developing AI models such as Gemini that are helping the company compete with OpenAI and other encroaching competitors. He's also helping turn those models into products.

Interestingly, Pichai said this change should help by "concentrating compute-intensive model building in one place." That may also help with a problem that has been getting worse inside Google for a while: the fight for computing resources.

Google's Pixel chief also gains more power

Google is also merging two of its large product units together. The devices and services group, which oversees hardware products such as the Pixel devices and Fitbit wearables , will merge with the part of the business that runs Android and Chrome.

That's big: these are two huge organizations that are now being pulled together under the banner of "Platforms and Devices." Rick Osterloh, who previously oversaw hardware, will oversee both groups. Hiroshi Lockheimer, who ran the Android and Chrome group, will remain at Google but run other projects across the company, Pichai said.

Sameer Samat has also been promoted to "President of Android Ecosystems" and will work with all of Google's Android partners. He'll be crucial in maintaining the firewall between the Pixel and Android groups, which has long served as a way not to let Google give its hardware special treatment over rivals (a firewall Osterloh promised The Verge would remain in place).

Expect more restructuring to come as Google continues to reshape itself around AI.

On Wednesday, Google's finance chief Ruth Porat informed staff in the finance group that there would be a reorg resulting in some job cuts, BI first reported . Porat said the changes were being made as the company realigns its priorities around AI, per an employee who saw the memo.

Google's plan to grow pixel with pop culture ads and sponsorships is working.

The key to overcoming Pixel's late start is putting them everywhere

It's no secret that Google was starting at a severe disadvantage when it launched the first Pixel smartphones. The original Pixel and Pixel XL were released in 2016. While that's a long time ago now, Apple released the iPhone nearly a decade earlier, in 2007, and the first Android phone would follow in 2008. Google indeed made phones under the Nexus brand starting in 2010, so the smartphone market wasn't exactly foreign to the company when the Pixel was created. Still, a ten-year head start in the world of consumer tech is often an insurmountable obstacle for another company to overcome. And yet, Google is slowly, but steadily growing Pixel market share in 2024.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is driving that growth. Google is making certain Android features exclusive to Pixel devices, and continually adding new ones via Pixel Feature Drops. The hardware has improved, too, with Pixel phones becoming famous for t heir cameras and computational photography capabilities. Aside from that, Google is growing the Pixel brand through strategic sponsorships and ad placements. You might not notice it, but Pixels are everywhere. They're in TV commercials, digital experiences, YouTube ads, and pop-culture collabs. Google is elevating the Pixel brand through these moves, and it's time we took notice.

If you look for them, pixels are everywhere, google has partnerships with the nba, wnsl, musical artists, and more.

Product placements are nothing new to the tech industry, and they've proven to be an effective way to create brand recognition. If you see a product — like a great Google Pixel phone — associated with things you love, you'll subconsciously (or consciously) make a positive connection between them. That's why endorsements are such a big business for athletes, celebrities, and other prominent figures in pop culture. Over the last half-decade, Google has built up a large portfolio of sponsorships and product placements in pop culture, and average people have started to pick up on them.

In 2021, Google announced that the Pixel was becoming "the Official Fan Phone of the NBA, NBA G League, and NBA 2K League." What exactly does that entail? For multiple NBA seasons, the Pixel brand has appeared in TV commercials for NBA games, became the presenting partner for the NBA Playoffs, and their phones have been used inside NBA arenas for promotions.

Among other places, the Google Pixel name appears on the backdrop for all NBA Playoffs press conferences. That means the NBA average of 1.59 million watchers per regular season game, according to Statista , saw Pixel ads and branding. The figures are even higher during the NBA Playoffs and Finals, where Google's Pixel advertisements and product placements are more prominent.

It's not just the NBA, either. Google is also the presenting partner of the WNBA on ESPN, a title it has held since May 2021. More recently, the Google Pixel became the "Official Mobile Phone" of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in February 2024. Outside of sports, Google launched a Pixel campaign for the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music, which included an exclusive interview with young artist Flo Milli.

In the NBA commercial above, Google brought in actor and comedian Druski and other pop culture figures to promote the Pixel brand. It all combines to form a strategic and elaborate investment in the Pixel family of devices through product placements and collaborations.

Google is delivering experiences, not just ads

Pixel is front-and-center in digital experiences like pixel arena.

However, clever ads and paid partnerships with celebrities can only do so much. Ad blockers exist, and not everyone watches TV commercials. But Google planned for this kind of situation and is also trying to elevate the Pixel brand with experience-based sponsorships. In 2022, Google launched the Pixel Arena in partnership with the NBA as a "a virtual space based on live in-game action where you can create, play, share and celebrate your NBA Playoffs skills." There's no way to quantify how many people actually use the Pixel Arena, but it's found within the same NBA app that has been downloaded over 10 million times on the Google Play Store.

Google is also making exclusive NBA-related content in the 3D and AR formats, with Pixel at the forefront. In one instance, Google showed off the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro camera features the very same day it was announced in the pregame show ahead of an NBA contest. And although the NBA is the largest Google Pixel partner to date, it's far from the only one. Google is offering experience-driven Pixel promotions any way it can, and these have the potential to be more influential than any one ad. Mentions of Google Pixel phones in sports broadcasts, arenas, apps, and digital experiences expose the average person to Pixel devices in a way they might not normally interact with them.

The strategy has worked before

Beats by dre achieved pop culture domination in the same way.

If you're reading Android Police, there's a good chance that Pixel is a household name for you. It might even be considered the face of Android in 2024 since Pixel devices get Android Developer Previews first, run stock Android, and come with exclusive features from Google. But for the average person, that isn't the case. Android is synonymous with Samsung Galaxy, and iOS is synonymous with the iPhone. That isn't all that surprising since Statista reports Apple and Samsung are the two global leaders in smartphone market share as of year-end 2023. At the very least, Google wants to get Pixel into the conversation.

Google can absolutely achieve that goal by continuing its thorough and expansive sponsorship collection and product placements. It should follow in Beats by Dre's footsteps, as the company was a case study in how to use pop culture to grow a brand. In Beats' heyday, virtually every celebrity or athlete wore them and nearly every consumer saw the company's products as a status symbol. (That's despite the fact they usually featured cheap plastic constructions and bass-heavy sound signatures.)

Google Pixel 9: News, leaks, rumored price, and release window

Google will have a very, very hard time building the Pixel brand up to the status of Beats. At this stage in the smartphone game, that seems impossible. However, there are more realistic goals for Google Pixel that are certainly attainable. Google's Pixel lineup arguably has the best chance at staving off the iPhone's domination of North American smartphone markets, and if it is successful, excellent branding and pop culture collabs will be a big reason why.

Many smartphone brands have their own camera testing setups, allowing them to fine-tune their photo and video experience. We seldom get a close look at these facilities, though, but Google has now peeled the curtain back on its lab setup.

CNET was allowed to tour Google’s camera testing facility for its Pixel phones, and the tech giant opted for a more practical approach to its camera sets. The company showed off cafe and living room sets which were used to test the Night Sight Video/Video Boost features on the Pixel 8 Pro versus the Pixel 7 Pro .

The lighting in the cafe and living room sets can be controlled down to intensity and color temperature, allowing Google to test its Pixel cameras in a wide variety of indoor scenes. In fact, the outlet specifically mentioned Google’s ability to simulate lighting situations like the late evening or sunrise.

“It turns out simple everyday scenes like mood-lit dinners or a romantic evening, those are really challenging for cameras,” said Isaac Reynolds, group product manager for the Pixel camera. He pointed to challenges like deciding which person to focus on in a scene, as well as ensuring candle flickering doesn’t affect exposure in a video.

How else does Google test its Pixel cameras?

The company showed off how it tests color reproduction for Video Boost too, as several people played Monopoly in a room with mixed lighting (complete with a color chart and other props in the scene).

Google says it also tests hardware in these situations. It gives the example of grease being used in smartphone camera components to ensure the various mechanisms are working smoothly. It notes that this grease can pool in one area of the phone camera when the device is in the same position for a while (e.g. flat on a table), resulting in focusing/shot inconsistencies at first. So these inconsistencies also need to be ironed out with testing.

Either way, this is an interesting look at Google’s Pixel camera testing setup. But we do hope the company is putting plenty of effort into testing other elements of the Pixel experience too, such as performance, battery life, and connectivity.
