The psychology of learning focuses on a range of topics related to how people learn and interact with their environments.

Let's learn a bit more about the psychology of learning.

Definition of Learning in Psychology

Learning can be defined in many ways, but most psychologists would agree that it is a relatively permanent change in behavior that results from experience. During the first half of the 20th century, the school of thought known as behaviorism rose to dominate psychology and sought to explain the learning process. Behaviorism sought to measure only observable behaviors.

3 Types of Learning in Psychology

Behavioral learning falls into three general categories.

Classical Conditioning

Classical conditioning is a learning process in which an association is made between a previously neutral stimulus and a stimulus that naturally evokes a response.

For example, in Pavlov's classic experiment , the smell of food was the naturally occurring stimulus that was paired with the previously neutral ringing of the bell. Once an association had been made between the two, the sound of the bell alone could lead to a response.

For example, if you don't know how to swim and were to fall into a pool, you'd take actions to avoid the pool.

Operant Conditioning

Operant conditioning is a learning process in which the probability of a response occurring is increased or decreased due to reinforcement or punishment. First studied by Edward Thorndike and later by B.F. Skinner , the underlying idea behind operant conditioning is that the consequences of our actions shape voluntary behavior.

Skinner described how reinforcement could lead to increases in behaviors where punishment would result in decreases. He also found that the timing of when reinforcements were delivered influenced how quickly a behavior was learned and how strong the response would be. The timing and rate of reinforcement are known as schedules of reinforcement .

For example, your child might learn to complete their homework because you reward them with treats and/or praise.

Observational Learning

Observational learning is a process in which learning occurs through observing and imitating others. Albert Bandura's social learning theory suggests that in addition to learning through conditioning, people also learn through observing and imitating the actions of others.

Basic Principles of Social Learning Theory

As demonstrated in his classic Bobo Doll experiments, people will imitate the actions of others without direct reinforcement. Four important elements are essential for effective observational learning: attention, motor skills, motivation, and memory.

For example, a teen's older sibling gets a speeding ticket, with the unpleasant results of fines and restrictions. The teen then learns not to speed when they take up driving.

The three types of learning in psychology are classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning.

History of the Psychology of Learning

One of the first thinkers to study how learning influences behavior was psychologist John B. Watson , who suggested in his seminal 1913 paper Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It that all behaviors are a result of the learning process. Psychology, the behaviorists believed, should be the scientific study of observable, measurable behavior. Watson's work included the famous Little Albert experiment in which he conditioned a small child to fear a white rat.

Behaviorism dominated psychology for much of the early 20th century. Although behavioral approaches remain important today, the latter part of the century was marked by the emergence of humanistic psychology, biological psychology, and cognitive psychology .

In this special issue of Nature Neuroscience , we feature an assortment of reviews and perspectives that explore the topic of learning and memory.

Learning new information and skills, storing this knowledge, and retrieving, modifying or forgetting these memories over time are critical for flexibly responding to a changing environment. How these processes occur has fascinated philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists for generations, and the question continues to inspire research encompassing diverse approaches. In this special issue, Nature Neuroscience presents a collection of reviews and perspectives that reflects the breadth and vibrancy of this field. Many of these pieces touch on topics that have animated decades of investigation, including the roles of synaptic plasticity, adult neurogenesis, neuromodulation, and sleep in learning and memory. Yet recently developed technologies continue to provide novel insights in these areas, leading to the updated views presented here.

Synaptic plasticity, such as long-term potentiation and depression, remains the prevailing cellular model for learning and memory. While many presume that these processes are engaged by learning and mediate lasting changes in behavior, this link has yet to be conclusively demonstrated in vivo. Humeau and Choquet ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0480-6 ) outline the latest tools that can be used to visualize and manipulate synaptic activity and signaling in behaving animals, and they discuss further advances that are needed to help bridge this gap in our understanding.

Neuroscientists have also long been intrigued by the role that the formation of new neurons could play in memory formation and maintenance of new memories. Miller and Sahay ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0484-2 ) integrate recent research on adult hippocampal neurogenesis to present a model of how the maturation of adult-born dentate granule cells contributes to memory indexing and interference.

While the neural mechanisms underlying memory acquisition and consolidation are relatively well-described, less is known about how memories are retrieved. Frankland, Josselyn, and Köhler ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0493-1 ) discuss how recent approaches that enable the manipulation of memory-encoding neural ensembles (termed ‘engrams’) have informed our current understanding of retrieval. They highlight the ways in which retrieval success is influenced by retrieval cues and the congruence between encoding and retrieval states. They also discuss important open questions in the field.

External stimuli and internal states can affect various aspects of learning and memory, which is mediated in part by neuromodulatory systems. Likhtik and Johansen ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0503-3 ) detail how acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and dopamine systems participate in fear encoding and extinction. They discuss emergent themes, including how neuromodulation can act throughout the brain or in specifically targeted regions, how it can boost selected neural signals, and how it can tune oscillatory relationships between neural circuits.

The efficacy of memory storage is also influenced by sleep. Klinzing, Niethard, and Born ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0467-3 ) review evidence from rodent and human studies that implicates reactivation of memory ensembles (or ‘replay’), synaptic scaling, and oscillations during sleep in memory consolidation. They also discuss recent findings that suggest that the thalamus coordinates these processes.

Effective learning requires us to identify critical information and ignore extraneous details, all of which varies depending on the task at hand. Yael Niv ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0470-8 ) discusses computational and neural processes involved in the formation of such task representations, how factors such as attention and context affect these representations, and how we use task representations to make decisions.

The ability to issue appropriate outputs in response to neural activity is a critical brain function, and is often disrupted in injury and disease. Maryam Shanechi ( https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-019-0488-y ) discusses how ‘closed-loop’ brain–machine interfaces (BMIs) have been used to monitor motor impulses and in turn control prosthetic or paralyzed limbs in order to restore function. Furthermore, she discusses how manipulation of BMI parameters can aid the study of learning. Finally, she explores how BMIs could be used in a similar vein to monitor and correct aberrant mood processes in psychiatric disorders.

By highlighting the topic of learning and memory, we honor its importance and centrality in neuroscience, while also celebrating the ways that other disciplines, including psychology, cellular and molecular biology, computer science, and engineering fuel insights in this area. We hope to continue to publish outstanding research in this area, particularly studies that resolve long-standing questions, that develop or leverage new methodologies, and that integrate multiple approaches.

That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

What you need to know about the psychology of learning

The psychology of learning encompasses a range of topics focused on how people learn and how they interact with the environments in which they learn. 

It is generally defined as a relatively permanent change in behaviour as a result of experience. Both educators and theorists are interested in cognitive development in learning as a way of understanding ways of learning, neurodivergence, and academic achievement. Educational neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field which has grown out of the space where cognitive neuroscience, developmental cognitive neuroscience, educational theory, and educational psychology converge.

Why is behaviourism important?

The psychology of learning is rooted in behaviourism (or behavioural psychology) which dominated psychology in the first half of the twentieth century. 

However, behaviourism only measured observable behaviours because it considered the field of psychology to be an experimental and objective science. Behaviourism did not take into account internal cognitive and mental processes, as it believed them to be too subjective. Although still important today, the emergence of humanistic psychology, biological psychology, and cognitive psychology in the second half of the twentieth century helped to develop our understanding of learning beyond behaviourism.  

Who are the most influential behavioural psychologists?

The psychologist John B. Watson (1878–1958) was one of the first in his field to study how human learning influences human behaviour. Other behaviourists considered to be pioneering include B.F. Skinner (1904–1990) and Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936), renowned for his work in classical conditioning with dogs. In a study published in the Review of General Psychology in 2002, B.F. Skinner actually made it to the number one spot as the most influential psychologist of the twentieth century. So, behaviourism played a huge part in the understanding of human behaviour and in the progress of psychological science.

John B. Watson suggested that all behaviours stem from the learning process. This theory is what came to define behaviourism. The three major types of learning process in behaviourism are:

  • Classical conditioning

This is a neutral stimulus associated with a natural response. Most famously, it was demonstrated in Pavlov’s experiment with dogs which paired the smell of food (natural occurring stimulus) with the sound of a bell (previously neutral stimulus). Pavlov was a Russian physiologist who was originally studying digestive processes in dogs. He noted that salivation was reflexive and not an automatic, physiological process. He tested this by conditioning the dogs to associate the ringing of the bell with the arrival of food and so the dogs would salivate whether food arrived or not.

  • Operant conditioning

This is a response which can be increased or decreased by reinforcement or punishment. Edward Thorndike first studied and identified this kind of learning and later, B.F. Skinner. Essentially, this method of learning uses rewards and punishments for behaviour, which then creates an association between a behaviour and the consequence, positive or negative.

  • Observational learning

This is learning through observing and imitating others. Social learning theory was proposed by Albert Bandura (1925–2021), another titan of psychological research who was Professor of Psychology at Stanford. He is known for the bobo doll experiment in which children imitated the actions of others without direct reinforcement. What this ultimately demonstrated was that children imitated violent behaviours which had been exhibited by an adult. It also showed that children in the experiment imitated non-violent behaviour when they observed it in an adult. Although it is considered an important experiment and pivotal in our understanding of behavioural psychology, it is not without its criticisms. These include whether the learning outcomes would be evident in a real-world scenario as opposed to under the conditions of an experiment.

The psychology of how people learn is complex. The various leading psychological theories range from taking a behaviourist approach that focuses on inputs and reinforcements, to theories related to neuroscience and social cognition. 

Neuroscience and social cognition prioritise an understanding of the brain’s architecture and its organisation during problem solving. Meanwhile, social constructivism looks at our interaction with our environment and with others. This includes Lev Vygotsky’s social development theory which looks at the critical roles of social interaction and culture in cognitive development. Other theories include those related to motivation, which focus more on the individual.

Another piece in the understanding of how we learn is attribution theory (part of social psychology). This is how we perceive the causes of everyday experiences and whether we consider them as being internal or external. More specifically, external experiences are considered out of our control (other people or events), while internal experiences are considered our own doing. 

These have an effect on our motivations and competence. If we blame ourselves for failing a test because we believe that we just aren’t intelligent enough (rather than not studying enough), this will impact our motivation and potentially, ability to progress through learning. Conversely, we could blame a teacher for not explaining something sufficiently before the exam. How we perceive events is primarily due to cognitive biases. Attribution theory can be seen as reductionist, but it can help us better understand motivation, goal orientation, and productivity.

What is vicarious learning?

Vicarious learning is similar to observational learning, but it’s important to note that it includes two other steps beyond merely observing. The individual who is learning needs to understand the reason why the person they are observing has achieved their objective or failed to reach it. They also need to be able to visualise themselves completing the same task successfully. In vicarious learning, we learn through the experience of others by hearing and seeing, rather than taking direct, hands-on instructions. Learning this way is more memorable and involves the development of empathy.

In his research in social learning theory, Albert Bandura identified that it’s easier for students to observe a task being completed, understand why it was successful, and visualise themselves doing the same, if the person they’re observing looks like them. Factors like age, sex, appearance, and accent are all important in vicarious learning making an impact.

The reason that vicarious learning has come to the fore is because it is very relevant in eLearning and when teaching digitally. Demonstration videos are a good example of vicarious learning. However, not everyone benefits from vicarious learning, especially those who struggle with using their imaginations or with self-confidence, as it is difficult for them to visualise themselves successfully completing the task. Bandura refers to this as self-efficacy – the individual’s belief in their capacity to execute behaviours necessary to produce specific performance attainments. This is also related to motivation.

The tips below can help you find a psychology research topic that suits your skills and interests.

Tip #1: Select a topic that interests you

Passion and interest should fuel every research project. A topic that fascinates you will most likely interest others as well. Think about the questions you and others might have and decide on the issues that matter most. Draw on your own interests, but also keep your research topical and relevant to others.

Don’t limit yourself to a topic that you already know about. Instead, choose one that will make you want to know more and dig deeper. This will keep you motivated and excited about your research.

Tip #2: Choose a topic with a manageable scope

If your topic is too broad, you can get overwhelmed by the amount of information available and have trouble maintaining focus. On the other hand, you may find it difficult to find enough information if you choose a topic that is too narrow.

To determine if the topic is too broad or too narrow, start researching as early as possible. If you find there’s an overwhelming amount of research material, you’ll probably need to narrow the topic down. Doing some preliminary research will reveal any existing research on the topic. If there is existing research, will you be able to produce new insights? You might need to focus on a different area or see if the existing research has limitations that you can overcome.

As the name suggests, abnormal psychology is a branch that focuses on abnormal behavior and psychopathology (the scientific study of mental illness or disorders).

Welcome to the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. Program at Florida Institute of Technology. The program at Florida Tech that leads to a Psy.D. in clinical psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association* and offers students training based on a practitioner-scholar model that prepares students for entry-level positions as clinical psychologists.  To achieve that goal, we are committed to training students with strong and continually developing clinical competencies, whose clinical work is informed by the scientific and theoretical knowledge base of the discipline of psychology, and whose graduates respect and value cultural and individual difference, and who maintain the highest professional principles and standards.

Our program leading to a Psy.D in Clinical Psychology trains students to become practicing clinical psychologists with core competencies in relational/clinical skills, comprehensive psychological assessment, clinical treatment interventions, research and evaluation skills, consultation and education, management and supervision, and diversity issues.

Admission Requirements

An applicant must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Although it is not necessary for the major area to have been psychology, it is required that those entering without a previous degree in psychology will have completed at least 18 credit hours of psychology coursework at the time of application. These courses must have been taken in a department of psychology, and should include statistics, personality theory, abnormal psychology, learning, physiological psychology and social psychology.

All application materials must be received by December 1 of each year.

Visit the graduate admissions information page for all the information you need to apply to the program. Admissions applications must include transcripts, GRE general test scores, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and a resume or CV.

Students we will consider for admission will receive an invitation approximately two weeks prior to our Interview Day, typically held in February. Attendance at Interview Day is VERY strongly recommended.

In this chapter, we review the basic contents and structure of our courses in cognition and cognitive psychology as well as pedagogical approaches to teaching. Topics range from an historical overview of the areas of science that lead up to the formation of cognitive science to detailed discussions of published articles within each of the major subfields of cognition (e.g., perception, attention, short-term working memory, long-term memory, language, and decision-making). Throughout our courses, we also focus extensively on the practical applications to cognitive theory. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of research design and data analyses and discuss how we guide our students in the practice of using theory to arrive at specific numerical predictions. In addition, we discuss our major learning objectives that we hope our students achieve in completing our courses and highlight ways that we assess student work toward these objectives. We also share some of the best practices for teaching cognition that we have developed ourselves and ones that we acquired from others. In particular, we discuss our style of teaching the course as well as examples of in-class activities and demonstrations. Finally, we share a list of resources that interested readers can review to help in the design of their courses on cognition, or in any courses, in general. This overview can serve as both a good starting point for beginning instructors and a useful resource for more experienced instructors.

Nutrient research reveals pathway for treating brain disorders

A University of Queensland researcher has found molecular doorways that could be used to help deliver drugs into the brain to treat neurological disorders.

Dr Rosemary Cater from UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience led a team which discovered that an essential nutrient called choline is transported into the brain by a protein called FLVCR2.

"Choline is a vitamin-like nutrient that is essential for many important functions in the body, particularly for brain development," Dr Cater said.

"We need to consume 400-500 mg of choline per day to support cell regeneration, gene expression regulation, and for sending signals between neurons."

Dr Cater said that until now, little was known about how dietary choline travels past the layer of specialised cells that separates the blood from the brain.

"This blood-brain barrier prevents molecules in the blood that are toxic to the brain from entering," she said.

"The brain still needs to absorb nutrients from the blood, so the barrier contains specialised cellular machines -- called transporters -- that allow specific nutrients such as glucose, omega-3 fatty acids and choline to enter.

"While this barrier is an important line of defence, it presents a challenge for designing drugs to treat neurological disorders."

Dr Cater was able to show that choline sits in a cavity of FLVCR2 as it travels across the blood-brain barrier and is kept in place by a cage of protein residues.

"We used high-powered cryo-electron microscopes to see exactly how choline binds to FLVCR2," she said.

"This is critical information for understanding how to design drugs that mimic choline so that they can be transported by FLVCR2 to reach their site of action within the brain.

"These findings will inform the future design of drugs for diseases such as Alzheimer's and stroke."

The research also highlights the importance of eating choline-rich foods -- such as eggs, vegetables, meat, nuts and beans.

The research is published in Nature and funded by the National Institutes of Health.
