Super Bowl 57 officiating crew: These are the officials for Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles
One of the more underrated aspects that influence the way Super Bowls are played is the crew that is selected to officiate them.
The NFL announced that veteran Carl Cheffers and his crew will oversee play for Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
This will mark the third time in the past six Super Bowls – including two of the last three – that Cheffers, who is the vice president of the NFL Referees Association, will be the referee of the NFL's final game of the season. Cheffers, 62, came into the league as a side judge in 2000; he was promoted to referee in 2008.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 12 from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Here's everything you need to know about the officials for Super Bowl 57.

Who are the Super Bowl 57 officials?
Referee : Carl Cheffers
Umpire : Roy Ellison
Down Judge : Jerod Phillips
Line Judge : Jeff Bergman
Field Judge : John Jenkins
Side Judge : Eugene Hall
Back Judge : Dino Paganelli
Replay Official : Mark Butterworth
Which of the Super Bowl 57 officials have Super Bowl experience?
Five of the eight officials have Super Bowl experience: Cheffers (Super Bowl 55, 52); Ellison (53, 42); Bergman (53, 31); Hall (55, 53) and Paganelli (54, 47). Together, they have a combined decade of Super Bowl experience.
This will be Cheffers' second time officiating a Super Bowl in a game in which Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are playing. The first was Super Bowl 55, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers topped Kansas City, 31-9 .
How does the NFL choose officials for the playoffs?
The NFL determines postseason assignments based on a grading system used to evaluate officials' performance every week. The best-graded officials will then be assigned to work playoff games. Officials are on year-to-year contracts and for those who are not up to par, it could mean remediation, a demotion or being asked not to come back the next season.
How frequently does Cheffers' crew throw flags?
Per NFLpenalties.com , Cheffers' crew worked 17 games this season (including a divisional round playoff game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills) and threw 214 penalty flags (26 declined, four offsetting) which averages to be 12.6 flags thrown. That mark was most for all officiating crews during the 2022 season. In fact, Cheffers' crew also led the NFL last season in flags thrown per game, with 13.9.

NFL Announces Referee, Officiating Crew for Super Bowl LVIII
- Author: Kristen Wong
In this story:
The NFL has released the officiating crew for Super Bowl LVIII , which is set to take place at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11.
The crew chief is Bill Vinovich, who has 18 years of experience in the league and has worked two Super Bowls before in Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LIV. The 62-year-old Vinovich is the eighth official in NFL history to work at least three Super Bowls as crew chief.
Notably, Vinovich served as crew chief of the 2018 NFC championship game which featured the infamous no-call against the New Orleans Saints . He was also referee for the Baltimore Ravens ' 33—19 regular season win over the San Francisco 49ers in December.
The rest of the NFL officiating crew for Super Bowl LVIII includes Terry Killens as the umpire, Patrick Holt as the down judge, Mark Perlman as the line judge, Tom Hill as the field judge, Allen Baynes as the side judge, Brad Freeman as the back judge, and Mike Chase as the replay official.
The Super Bowl officials were selected from the pool of 28 officials who worked the divisional round of the playoffs. Officials are not allowed more than two postseason assignments.

Which conference refs will be officiating the College Football Playoff?
The college football playoff announced the officials for peach bowl, fiesta bowl and cfp title game.
The College Football Playoff has determined the assignments for the officials that will determine the national championship. The names of those officials won't be revealed until game day, but now we know which conferences are responsible for providing the refs for the Peach Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and CFP title game.
The Big 12 getting the title game is not a surprise, as it was the conference that got left out of the playoff. Every year, the one league (or one of the leagues) missing the playoff will be assigned to the title game.
While every fan seems to have a bias against a certain set of conference-based officials, the most notorious ref-related controversy from the 2016 regular season season was the end of Oklahoma State-Central Michigan. The MAC officials (not in the playoff) for that game were suspended after it was determined they had erred in giving the Chippewas an untimed down that led to the winning score. The blunder helped CMU become bowl eligible, but it did not ultimately prevent Oklahoma State from playoff consideration following Oklahoma's undefeated run through Big 12 conference play.
However, the Big 12 did later admit that it could have buzzed in from its replay center to potentially prevent the untimed down . Luckily, I think the national championship game will have everyone's eyes, making it unlikely for any mistake to go unrecognized.

NBA replay review rules: Explaining when referees can check instant replay without a coach's challenge
The final two minutes of an NBA game can last a while.
Between timeouts and replay reviews , there can be too many stoppages down the stretch in some games.
The pressure intensifies and every play is under a microscope during and after the game. While players might say that a game isn't won or lost on a single play late in the fourth, it sometimes does alter the outcome. That's why referees are allowed to use instant replay for a closer look at some calls.
After all, the human eye can't catch everything in real-time.
The Sporting News breaks down the replay review rules below.

When can NBA referees check instant replay?
( Per the NBA's official 2023-24 rulebook )
NBA referees have a handful of reasons to check the instant replay monitor even before the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime. These rules also apply for the final two minutes.
- Referees are uncertain whether a player made a shot prior to the game clock expiring at the end of any quarter or overtime period
- A foul was issued at the end of any quarter or overtime period
- Referees are uncertain whether a personal foul meets the criteria to be upgraded to a flagrant foul
- A hostile altercation occurs
- Referees are uncertain whether there should be time added to the game clock at the end of any quarter or overtime period
- Referees are uncertain whether a made field goal was a 2-pointer or 3-pointer. This also applies on shooting fouls to award the player the correct amount of free throws
- Referees are uncertain whether a player made the shot before the expiration of the shot clock
- Referees are uncertain whether a personal foul meets the criteria of a clear-path-to-the-basket foul
- Referees are uncertain whether a foul is on the floor or in the act of shooting
- Referees are uncertain whether an off-ball foul occurred before the shot was released on a successful bucket
- Referees are uncertain whether a team had the correct amount of players on the court
NBA officials have a separate set of rules that only apply during the final two minutes, in addition to the aforementioned rules.
- Referees are uncertain which team should be awarded possession on an out-of-bounds call
- Referees are uncertain whether the ball touched the rim, thus needing to check the shot or game clock for a potential adjustment
- Referees are uncertain whether a player was standing in the restricted area when taking a block/charge
- Referees are uncertain if a goaltending or offensive basket interference was called correctly on the floor

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems
However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds. Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
