What Can I Do with a Biomedical Science Degree?

With a biomedical sciences degree, your career possibilities are diverse and abundant. At UNH COLSA , our three Biomedical Science majors are designed to equip you for a variety of roles in the health sector and beyond. You can pursue traditional paths such as research and clinical applications, where you can contribute to advancing medical knowledge and patient care. But your expertise can also be invaluable in less conventional roles that rely on a deep understanding of biology and medicine, such as in science communication, policy making, or health education. In this blog post, we'll be going over the myriad career opportunities a Biomedical Science degree offers you, as well as some tips to help you when you're ready to enter the job market after graduation.

Understanding Biomedical Science

The skills you develop throughout your biomedical sciences education, like analytical thinking and problem-solving, are highly sought after in many fields. For example, roles in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and regulatory affairs offer opportunities to apply your knowledge in a corporate or industry setting. Alternatively, your degree can serve as a stepping stone to further education and specialization in fields such as medicine, dentistry, or academia. Each career path appreciates the critical thinking and rigorous scientific training inherent to a biomedical sciences background.

Moreover, the landscape of biomedical sciences careers is always evolving.  When new challenges arise, such as public health issues and technological advancements, your degree positions you to be at the forefront of innovation and change. Whether you choose to focus on research, patient care, or industry, you can be confident that a biomedical sciences degree provides a strong foundation for a meaningful and dynamic career.

Scope of Biomedical Sciences

The biomedical sciences encompass an interdisciplinary approach focused on the understanding of human health and disease. As a biomedical science major, you're exposed to a plethora of subjects including biology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, and molecular biology. You might start at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) COLSA, where specialized programs like the Medical Laboratory Science option provide a firm foundation in diagnostic laboratory work, which is crucial in disease treatment and prevention.

Moreover, the biomedical science realm offers diverse opportunities. By pursuing an undergraduate major in this area, you're preparing not just for laboratory-based roles but also a wide range of career options in research, academia, healthcare policy, or pharmaceutical development.

Core Principles and Skills

Biomedical science is grounded in a set of core principles that include understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease, the body's immune responses, and the intricate details of genetic inheritance. Critical thinking and data analysis are central to this discipline, enabling you to decipher complex scientific data and draw meaningful conclusions.

In a program like the Medical and Veterinary Sciences option , you not only delve into biochemistry and molecular biology but also develop communication skills that are essential for conveying scientific information. Whether you’re working on groundbreaking research or communicating your findings, these skills place you at the core of scientific advancements that shape our understanding of life sciences.

Career Paths in Biomedical Science

With a biomedical science degree, you embark on a journey through a versatile field that offers various fulfilling career opportunities tailored to your interests. Whether it's research, technology, or working directly with patients, your choice impacts health outcomes and scientific advancements.

Research and Development

In Research and Development (R&D), you craft the future of medical treatments and health care technologies. As a research scientist or biotechnologist, you may secure funding through organizations like the National Science Foundation (NSF) for groundbreaking projects. Engaging in pharmacology, neuroscience, or other specializations, biomedical science jobs in R&D deliver competitive salaries, reflecting the significant impact of your work.

Clinical and Laboratory Work

Clinical and laboratory work forms the backbone of patient diagnosis and research validity. Working in hospitals or laboratories, your role as a clinical scientist, laboratory technician, or microbiologist contributes to advancements in health. The National Institutes of Health ( NIH ) often supports such critical roles, ensuring that those on the forefront of medical testing and diagnostics have the resources they need.

Biomedical Technology and Engineering

The field of biomedical technology and engineering merges engineering principles with biological knowledge to develop life-saving devices and equipment. As a biomedical engineer, you may work in development, testing, or maintenance, ensuring that technological applications meet the complex needs of medical professionals and patients. This sector often requires collaboration with institutions like the Medical Research Council to align engineering innovation with medical research goals.

Medical Sales and Technical Support

Medical sales and technical support serve as critical links between manufacturers and healthcare providers. A medical sales representative informs and distributes the latest biomedical products, while technical support specialists ensure these technologies function correctly in real-world settings. Your expertise not only drives sales but also supports medical staff, drastically improving patient care and the industry's operational efficiency.

In these dynamic roles, salaries often reflect both your experience and the specialized knowledge required. Whether contributing to cutting-edge medical research or supporting veterinary sciences, a career in biomedical science adapts to your professional aspirations. Those drawn to animal health can explore opportunities through organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which empowers professionals in veterinarian roles to excel in their field.

Working in Healthcare

With a biomedical science degree, you're uniquely positioned to play an integral role in advancing healthcare. You can contribute significantly to medicine, health, and safety in various settings.

Hospitals and Clinics

In hospitals and clinics, you can bring value as a clinical research associate or physician associate, working alongside doctors to diagnose and manage health problems. Your expertise supports the effective treatment of diseases, including cancer and chronic conditions linked to aging. Biomedical scientists are also instrumental in the implementation of clinical trials, ensuring new treatments are safe and effective for patient well-being.

Public Health and Safety

With your expertise in biomedical science, your role in public health and safety can pivotal. For example, by understanding and applying principles of epidemiology, you help control health hazards and safeguard communities.

Medical Research

In medical research, your degree enables you to investigate the causes and progression of diseases. You'll play a key role in discovering new interventions to enhance public health. The story behind the Kurchatov Institute, the birthplace of Russian nuclear power

scientific research jobs

From the first Soviet nuclear bomb to the emergence of the Russian internet - the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy has been a birthplace of innovation in Russia for a long time now. In 2018, it celebrated its 75th anniversary.

“The nuclear reactors designed within the walls of the Institute and used in our industry, shipbuilding, medicine, space and defense sectors, have become the symbols of our state’s power,” Russian President Vladimir Putin at its anniversary celebration.

Who was Igor Kurchatov? And what were the Institute’s main achievements over the history? Here is what you should know about this institution that remains central to the Russian nuclear sector.

Igor Kurchatov (1903-1960)

Igor Kurchatov (1903-1960)

Secret Lab. 2

Founded in 1943, the Kurchatov Institute originally went by the name “Laboratory No. 2”. Such an inconspicuous title was designed to keep its work secret - after all, it was established to invent the first ever nuclear bomb. In all documents the laboratory was listed as “an assembly workshop” and uranium was called silicon. All project participants went through a complex system of security checks and had to sign official Soviet secrets laws.

It was only in 1960 that the institute was named after Igor Kurchatov, its first head and an outstanding nuclear physicist. It was under his command that during the first 15 years of the lab’s work Soviet scientists not only reached their initial goal and created the first Soviet nuclear bomb (1949) but also developed  the first cyclotron in Moscow (1944), the first nuclear reactor in Europe (1946), the world’s first thermonuclear bomb (1953), the world’s first industrial nuclear power plant (1954), the first Soviet nuclear reactor for submarines (1958) and nuclear-powered icebreakers (1959), and the largest facility for conducting controlled thermonuclear reactions (1958).

The model of the first Soviet nuclear bomb RDS-01 exhibited at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC-VNIIEF) in Russia's Sarov.

Kurchatov had a strong personality that inspired his fellow colleagues. Those who knew him recalled he was an energetic and jovial leader and no one else would have done a better job than he did. Kurchatov had time for everything: he was able to visit every facility of the institute, check the progress, talk to colleagues, cheer them up and formulate a task. His employees looked forward to meetings with him that always inspired them and remained in memory for a long time.

“Among the thousands of people that dealt with a nuclear problem at that time, there was no one more popular and more respected than this giant with a slow club-foot gait, ever-radiant eyes and warm short name ‘Beard’,” Anatoly Alexandrov, physicist and second director of the Kurchatov Institute, wrote remembering Kurchatov.

Then and now

Later, in 1968 the institute obtained record results on plasma confinement using a tokamak, a toroidal chamber with magnetic coils. Created at the Kurchatov Institute, tokamak has become the main research tool for controlled thermonuclear fusion throughout the world.

The world's first tokamak

The world's first tokamak "TO-1".

In the next decade, the institution rapidly developed microelectronic technologies including ion implantation, lithography, plasma chemistry, thin films. All of these have become the basis for the development of nanotechnology at the institute, the creation of hybrid systems and supercomputers. In 1975, came a new large tokamak T-10 - today it’s still being used for checking equipment for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), the first experimental thermonuclear reactor in the world. The institute also has the large tokamak T-15 with a superconducting magnetic system.

The Kurchatov Institute is also directly tied to the emergence of the Internet in the Soviet Union, and then in Russia. On August 1, 1990, the first computer network of the Union scale Relcom was founded on the basis of the Kurchatov Institute. The first thing to do was connect computers in scientific institutions in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk, and Kiev. And on Aug. 28 of the same year, the first computer communication session took place on the territory of the USSR with a foreign one, established at the University of Helsinki.

The work inside the Kurchatov Institute today.

Today the institute comprises a range of separate research centers dealing with a range of scientific questions - all of them come together under National Research Center “The Kurchatov Institute” umbrella.

The core activities of the center remain the safe development of nuclear energy, controlled thermonuclear fusion and plasma processes, low and medium energy nuclear physics, solid state physics and superconductivity, meson chemistry. Also, serious research is being conducted in the field of nano and biotechnology, the creation of new materials and drugs. Among some of the most interesting projects the institute is working on right now is finding solutions to protecting humans from radiation in space - allowing for long-term space travel and making it possible to get rid of negative memories for rehabilitation purposes (like treating people with “Afghan syndrome”).

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in collaboration with agency partners will serve as a major source of information, educational activities and experiences on and around the total solar eclipse taking place on April 8, 2024. The next total solar eclipse will not be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044, so this is a once-in-a-generation event of astronomical magnitude.

NSF will celebrate the eclipse in Dallas, Texas, which falls within the path of totality (the area where a full eclipse can be viewed); in Washington, D.C (outside the path of totality); and in locations across the country. For those who cannot attend an in-person viewing, NSF will host a livestream of the eclipse featuring scientists who study the sun and some of the high-tech facilities they use, including the NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory.

Prior to the eclipse, NSF, in partnership with NOAA and NASA, is making 1 million solar eclipse glasses available to the public. The glasses are being distributed nationwide and will be available on the National Mall the day of the eclipse while supplies last.

Leading up to the eclipse, NSF will host multiple outreach events at public libraries, museums and observatories across the country, many of which are free and open to the public. At these events, eclipse-related educational material will be available to teachers, parents and caregivers. NSF also offers many educational resources and activities on the science of eclipses.

The fellows selected will have to spend a considerable part of their time in the Côa Valley territory, as defined later, creating a strong connection to the Territory and contributing to its valorisation and recognition. The scholarship projects must contribute to the effective valorisation of the territory under the influence of the Côa Parque Foundation, in terms of its heritage, environmental and social components.

Requirements

Additional information.

The PhD Research Grants are intended for registered candidates or candidates who meet the necessary conditions to enroll in a cycle of studies leading to the academic degree of doctor, and who wish to develop research activities leading to the award of this degree.

The following may apply to this call:

  • Nationals or citizens of other Member States of the European Union;
  • Third-country citizens;
  • Stateless persons;
  • Citizens who are beneficiaries of political refugee status.

  • Not have benefited from a PhD or PhD scholarship in companies directly funded by FCT, regardless of its duration.
  • Not hold a PhD degree.

Application Eligibility Requirements

It is essential, under penalty of non-admission to the Competition, to attach the following documents to the application:

  • Elements of the identity card/citizen card/passport;
  • Curriculum vitae of the candidate;
  • Certificates of qualification of the academic degrees held, mandatorily specifying the final classification and, if possible, the classifications obtained in all the subjects taken, or, alternatively, a declaration of honour by the candidate in that he or she completed the bachelor's or master's degree by the end of the application deadline;
  • Registration of recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and registration of the conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, or, alternatively, declaration of honour by the candidate in that he or she obtained the recognition of the foreign degree equivalent to that of bachelor or master with effect from the end of the application deadline;

  • Write the application and all the documents associated with it, including the letters of motivation and recommendation, in Portuguese or English.

With regard to the above-mentioned admissibility requirements, the following should be noted:

  • In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure the application of the principle of equal treatment to candidates who hold foreign and national academic degrees, the recognition of these degrees and the conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale is mandatory. In cases where students present documents proving degrees obtained abroad and that are not recognized in Portugal and, cumulatively, a declaration of honour in which they will present the recognition of the degree obtained abroad, these classifications will be assumed with a grade of 10 (assuming success by the minimum value, on the Portuguese scale, which varies from 0 to 20);
  • The recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas, as well as the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, can be requested at any public higher education institution, or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). Regarding this matter, it is suggested to consult the DGES portal through the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt ;
  • Only candidates who have completed the cycle of studies leading to a bachelor's or master's degree by the end of the application deadline will be admitted. If they do not yet have the certificate of completion of the course, a declaration of honour from the candidates will be accepted as having completed the necessary qualifications for the purposes of the competition by the end of the application deadline. The granting of the scholarship is subject to the presentation, in the contracting phase, of proof of ownership of academic qualifications.

At all times of the evaluation process, confidentiality is fully protected and ensured in order to guarantee the independence of all opinions produced.

For each application, a final evaluation form will be produced by the panel where the arguments that led to the classifications attributed to each of the evaluation criteria are presented in a clear, coherent and consistent way, also explaining any bonuses awarded.

Minutes of the meetings of the evaluation panel will be produced under the responsibility of all its members. The minutes and their annexes must include the following information:

  • Name and affiliation of all members of the evaluation panel;
  • Identification of all excluded applications and their reasons [if applicable];
  • the methodology adopted by the panel for cases considered particular [if applicable];

  • Declarations of Conflict of Interest (CDI) of all panel members;
  • Possible delegations of votes and powers due to justified absence [if applicable].

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Applications considered admissible will be scored from zero (0.00 minimum grade) to 20 (20.00 maximum grade) in each of the three evaluation criteria:

Criterion A – Merit of the Candidate (worth 40% of the final classification);

  • Sub-criterion A1 - Final grade of the bachelor's degree (if the student has an integrated master's degree, he/she will have the final classification of the integrated master's grade here) (3%)
  • Sub-criterion A2 - Master's final grade (7%)
  • Sub-criterion A3 - Scientific publications (authorship and co-authorship) (20)%
  • Sub-criterion A4 - Scientific communications (5%)
  • Sub-criterion A5 - Participation in Research Projects (5%) Criterion B - Merit of the work plan (worth 50% of the final grade);
  • Sub-criterion B1 - Letter of motivation (5%)
  • Sub-criterion B2 - General evaluation of the Research Project (35%)
  • Sub-criterion B3 – Impact on territorial development in the heritage and/or natural and/or economic components (10%)

Criterion C – Interview (worth 10% of the final grade);

  • Sub-criterion C1 - Analysis and critical thinking (5%)
  • Sub-criterion C2 - Motivation and availability (5%)

Candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in the three evaluation criteria, with the respective weighting in each criterion: criterion A - 40%, criterion B - 50% and criterion C - 10%.

For the purposes of deciding on the award of grants, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the sub-criteria, defined above, translated by the following formula:

ClassificationFin=(0.03xSub-criterion A1 +0.07xSub-criterion A2 + 0.20xSub-criterion A3 +0.05xSub-criterion A4 + 0.05x Sub-criterion A5) + (0.05xSub-criterion B1 + 0.35xSub-criterion B2 + 0.10xSub-criterion B3) +

+(0.05xSub-criterion C1 + 0.05xSub-criterion C2)

For tie-breaking purposes , the ranking of candidates will be based on the marks assigned to each of the evaluation criteria in the following order of precedence:

  • Valuation of sub-criterion B3
  • Valuation of Sub-criterion A3
  • Valuation of sub-criterion C2.

The final classification resulting from the application of the weightings specified in this document will be rounded to the third decimal place, using the following rule: when the fourth decimal place is equal to or greater than 5 (five), it will be rounded up; When the fourth decimal place is less than 5 (five), the value of the third decimal place will be maintained.

Important notice for applicants with degrees issued by foreign higher education institutions:

  • Candidates with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions may apply and will be evaluated with the same criteria as candidates with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, provided that they present, in their application, proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale under the terms of the applicable legislation.
  • Candidates with recognized foreign diplomas who do not present proof of conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale will be evaluated with the minimum classification (10 points) in sub-criteria A1 and A2.
  • In any case, scholarship contracts with candidates with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded upon presentation of proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final grade, as indicated above.

Applicants whose application is evaluated with a final grade lower than ten (10,000).

Applications must clearly focus on the region of influence of the Côa Park Foundation and contribute to its Heritage, Economic and Social development.
