This 7 Day Kerala Road Trip Itinerary is designed keeping the following factors in mind:

• Fly in and Fly Out from Cochin International Airport
• Have a vehicle at your disposal
• Have 8 days in your hand

After doing a 7 Day Road Trip to Bhutan back in March 2019, I decided to go on a   One Week Trip to Kerala but with my family, and this was roughly what we did, and what I recommend to you as well, as it contains a glimpse of everything you can experience in Kerala – God’s Own Country including admiring the different forms of street art, and cultural heritage in Kochi ; visiting the massive tea estates in Munnar ; experiencing the rawness of Nature in Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady and enjoying the quietness and serenity of the Kerala Backwaters.

Having said that, the main priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is to relax and rejuvenate , as there isn’t much to do in Munnar, Thekkady or Alleppey.

Day 1 – Land in Kochi – Explore Fort Kochi

To make the most out of your Day 1 of your 7 Day Kerala Road Trip , make sure to land in Kochi before mid-day. This way you can check in to a hotel of your liking, preferably in Fort Kochi, and have the rest of the day, post lunch to explore the city of Kochi.

A charming seaside area, Fort Kochi is known for its Dutch, Portuguese, and British colonial architecture, and elaborate bamboo Chinese fishing nets which you can see at Fort Kochi Beach.

Fort Kochi is getting popular for its thriving and blooming art and cultural scene, which becomes evident, as you waltz your way around the narrow by lanes, and admire the different street art graffiti’s.

One place I’ll definitely recommend is the Kashi Art Café , where you’ll find some rather interesting and unique creations of art.

Enjoy a relaxing hearty meal in one of the many quaint cafes spread out in Fort Kochi, before calling it a night, and gearing up for the next day.

It takes around 4-5 hours by road from Kochi to Munnar , so ideally you should start by 9 AM, making sure that you reach Munnar – One of the Best Hill Stations in India ,  by lunch time.

3 hours on the road, and it’s time for the first pit stop – Munnar Spices and Ayurvedic Garden.

The one hour tour across the spice plantation, where the guide briefs about various benefits of different spices and ayurvedic herbs, is quite a learning lesson, which sets a good tone to your 7 Day Kerala Trip.

BTW there’s also a chocolate factory, selling a variety of chocolates, which you can taste and buy as well. However, I’ll rather suggest, you purchase the chocolates from the shops in the city, as they are much cheaper.

After the pit stop, continue on your way to Munnar, and reach your hotel, which was Amber Dale Resort and Spa, Munnar in our case.

Post lunch, explore the nearby Pallivassal Tea Estate , and the Attukad Waterfall , at your own pace.

Like already mentioned, the priority of this 7 Day Kerala Itinerary is relaxation and rejuvenation. And there’s nothing better than, waking up without an alarm, and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the picturesque tea estates.

Post lunch, head out to Lockhart tea estate for a tour of the tea factory, and learn more about the different processes involved in the production of Tea.

Alternatively, you can head to the Mattupetty Dam and the Mattupetty Tea Estate , and do the tea factory tour there instead.

Thereafter make your way back to your hotel, to enjoy an amazing sunset, and a yummy dinner.

Plan your day in such a way, that you enjoy a hearty breakfast at leisure in Munnar, and reach Thekkady – The Gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve , just in time for lunch in Thekkady.

We managed to reach our resort in Thekkady – Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , just in time for lunch, which was followed by a guided tour around the 6-acre property, where we got to know more about the conscious efforts that, these people have been taking towards sustainability and implementing eco-tourism practices.

Post lunch, and a stroll around the property, there’s nothing better than jumping in the pool for some time, and taking an afternoon nap, in one of the many hammocks, hanging around.

However, keep in mind that if you plan to explore the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the next day, like us, you need to get your tickets for activities like Jungle Patrol, Bamboo Rafting, Border Hiking, Boating and Trekking, from the Ticket counter, which is just a 5 minutes’ drive from Greenwoods Resort Thekkady , and the counter closes around 5 PM in the evening (cross check with the reception).

Also, there are a lot of cultural performances such as Kalaripayattu or Kathakalli , which happen in the evening every day, the tickets of which also need to be purchased before 5 PM (the reception will guide you to the ticket office).

Once you are back after purchasing the tickets, you can explore the Thekkady market, which is just at the doorstep of Greenwoods  Resort Thekkady , and purchase various spices, handmade chocolates, and other ayurvedic products.

Have a sumptuous dinner and call it an early night.

This is the day in your One Week Trip To Kerala when you will be exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , and the best way to get the best experience, is to opt for  Bamboo Rafting , which basically involves, a one-and-a-half-hour hike through the jungle – an hour-long boat ride – and a hike back to the starting point.

The important thing to keep in mind, is to keep yourself hydrated, which PTR takes care off, as they give you a packed lunch, a bottle of water, some juice and fresh fruits in a backpack, making it easy to carry.

Hiking through the forest, with a guide, be assured that you will spot a lot of different species of birds, and if you are lucky, some animals as well.

This whole experience of exploring the untouched beauty of Periyar Tiger Reserve , will take up 6 – 7 hours, and you should be back by 3 – 4 PM, giving you enough time to go back to the hotel, take an afternoon nap, and then head out again to see the cultural performances.

As you will be tired, all you should be doing is chilling out once you are back to the resort for dinner, and a leisure stroll across the property, and ensuring that you get proper and well-deserved rest.

Its Day 6 of your 7 Day Trip to Kerala, and you should check out of your hotel in Thekkady, to reach Aleppey/Kumarakom/Lake Vembanad, which will take 3-4 hours by road.

We had planned to stay at Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , which overlooks the massive Lake Vembanad, and is a hot favorite among both corporate and leisure travelers. We were just in time for lunch, where the chef had prepared an authentic lunch in the local flavors, which was a gastronomic experience like none other.

There are plenty of luxury resorts in Kumarakom and Alleppey , which you can choose from depending on your budget, However, my personal recommendation would be Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad . It was the perfect place for us to be, as there wasn’t much to do, except to relax, enjoy the views, and chill out in the infinity pool overlooking Lake Vembanad.

An interesting addition that you can add to this One Week Kerala Itinerary of yours, while in the Kerala backwaters is visiting Munroe Island , as a day trip from Allepey / Kumarakom.

And just like that the 7 Day Kerala Road Trip, is at the last stage, but worry not, as there’s something special for the last day, which is – A full day cruise of the backwaters in the houseboat where you get to experience the beauty of nature in God’s Own Country, while enjoying a traditional meal on board , comprising of more than 15 dishes, served on a banana leaf.

The last day of the 7 Day Kerala Itinerary , couldn’t be much better than this. And did I forget to mention, you can book a spa session in the evening, after enjoying the day cruising along the backwaters. The 60 minutes ayurvedic massage, is just what your body needs, bringing your relaxing One Week Trip to Kerala to an end.

Cochin International Airport , is merely an hour’s drive from Lemon Tree Lake Vembanad , so you can book your flight accordingly, on the next day, thus bringing an end to a super relaxing 7 Day Kerala Tour.

I really enjoyed and felt every bit of your 7-day road trip to Kerala. You’re a real traveling lover. And you know a lot about how make the travel plan excited. So, I would like to get some suggestions from you.

I’ve planned a bike trip across Kerala at the end of September for 10days. My route will be almost the whole of Kerala.

Day 1: Bangalore to Mangalore- stay and see the place

Day2: Mangalore to Bekal to Kozhikode – stay in Kozhikode

Day 3: Kozhikode to Kochi- stay in Kochi

Day 4: Kochi to Alleppey- stay in Alleppey for 2days

Day 6: Alleppey to Varkala to Munnar – stay there for 2days.

Day 8: Munnar to pallakad- stay in pallakad

Day 9: Palakkad to Bangalore

Now please suggest should I add or remove destinations from this list to make the all 10 days journey worthwhile.

I was thinking:

* Should I include Varkala or not!!!

* The best possible route to Bangalore from Palakkad or Munnar as Palakkad is just an option, not a necessary place to visit.

* I still have a day or two left in case I drop out Palakkad. Which place I can visit?

This really does come at a great time. I’m looking to visit this part of India on my annual visit in December. I remember visiting fort kochi when I was really little and would love to visit it again. For kochi is where i start my trip and even though I don’t have 8 days will try and get as much as I can in the4 days I’m there. A trip to must is something I want to achieve as well let’s see how much I can cover. Thanks for the details and a great post.

I really like the varied nature of your recommended Kerala itinerary. It also looks like Kerala is an ideal place to relax amid natural beauty. I am particularly drawn to spice garden and tea factory visits.

This is such a perfect 7 day itinerary. We followed the exact same route a few years ago. The scenery is stunning, the chocolates are yummy and the relaxation on the backwaters just perfect. We loved spending time at the side of the road at the tea plantations, we even managed to chat to some of the lovely ladies. Thanks for bringing back great memories of our time in Kerala.

7 days in Kerala sounds like a dream! Needless to say I’d be spending a lot of time in the infinity pool at Lemon Tree Vembanad Lake Resort – how very cool. I really liked your plan as it covers most of the important places of the central part and a bit of southern part of the state. You had me at relax and rejuvenate!! I’ve always said that if I ever visit India, I’d like to see this region of Kerala first. This is a detailed and well written itinerary and you’ve given me plenty of useful ideas for if I ever get to go. I wouldn’t say no to those handmade chocolates, and that nature trail in Munnar is incredible!

Once you mentioned the art at Fort Kochi, I realized I might need more days for this trip… it sounds (and looks) like an incredible place to admire street art! Then again with the Periyar Tiger Reserve. I seriously need to explore these areas. I mean, bamboo rafting?! How cool! This really is an awesome 7 day itinerary. Great post!

I do love a good road trip! I love the ideas of stopping at the spice garden and the tea factory, which I believe is essential when exploring a new region. The houseboat experience at the end of the trip is a great way to cap off an amazing adventure. That gastronomic adventure on banana leaves sounds delish!

My top travel tips for Kerala, India’s soft landing

Kerala is one of the top travel destinations in India, and following are my top travel tips for Kerala. Kerala has soft, white sand beaches, gentle people, a tropical climate, fresh spices, tea plantations, India’s highest literacy rate, a unique culture … there are so many reasons to love Kerala. When asked, I often recommend starting a first trip to India in Kerala as it provides for a soft landing.

Flying down to Kerala

On my first trip to India, I landed in Delhi in December 2005 and by the end of the month, I was chilly! Delhi can drop to 5 C. at night in winter, and the houses are not heated. I was staying with Indian friends, who were all huddled in layers of warm clothing around room heaters, and I decided enough is enough. I did not leave Canada and travel all the way to India to be cold. I called a travel agent I knew and booked a flight to Trivandrum, Kerala.

I flew on December 31, the only flight available, and I cannot tell you how happy I was to arrive in Kerala on a sun-kissed, balmy day. From that day to this, I have had a special place in my heart for this lush, tropical state. If you wish to discover this beautiful state, “God’s own country,” then I recommend that you book a tour package from a reliable and trusted Kerala travel agency like eKerala Tourism.

God’s Own Country

The motto for Kerala, “God’s Own Country,” refers to the rich heritage, lively culture, lush topography and positive socio-political climate. A Yahoo! answer to the question “Why is Kerala called God’s own country” turned up this: “Nestled between the pristine waters of the Arabian sea on the west and the lush Western Ghat mountains on the east, its intense network of rivers and lagoons, thick forests, exotic wildlife, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters and a long shoreline of serene beaches make it a traveler’s paradise.” In Kerala, humans and nature coexist in harmony, and nature abounds.

Top travel recommendations in Kerala

I’ve been to Kerala many times, including to take Ayurvedic treatment, visit the Backwaters, enjoy the beach and the many of the best tourist places in Kerala . I have also driven along the coast, making several stops along the way — including to get a hug from Amma, “the hugging saint,” whose ashram is in Kerala. Based on my experience and those of others, here are my top suggestions for a trip to Kerala.

1. Take treatments at an Ayurvedic resort. I stayed at Shinshiva Ayurvedic Resort for two heavenly weeks in 2006 and often dream of returning to relax on the beach, enjoy daily oil massages and eat fresh, healthy food. There are many Ayurvedic resorts and hospitals in Kerala to choose from, from the serious and austere to luxurious resorts on the beach that cater to tourists.

2. Float along the Backwaters. The Backwaters of Kerala are one of the state’s top tourist attractions and for a reason. It’s a unique way to relax and enjoy a traditional culture on board your own boat.

3. Ascend to the tea plantations of Munnar. Featured to great affect in the Oscar winning film Life of Pi , the lush hill station of Munnar is a centre of the coffee, tea and spice gardens of Kerala. A great place to find cooler weather and to commune with the natural beauty of the region.

4. Track wildlife at Peryiyar. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of India’s most popular nature reserves, home to bison, sambar, wild boar, langur, elephants and about 46 tigers, at last count.

5. Visit the old port of Cochin / Kochi. Kerala has long been a seaport, attracting traders from the Middle East and beyond, and Cochin was a major port of call. The old part of the city is fascinating, and features boutique hotels, great restaurants, many cultural attractions, a spice market, the famous Chinese fishing nets and a wonderful atmosphere. Here, you can about a lot more things to do in Kochi .

6. Bask on the beach in Varkala. This is a favourite spot in Kerala for tourists. Dramatic cliffs, gorgeous sunsets and a relaxed vibe combine to make it a great spot to unwind and unplug.

7. Enjoy the festivals. Kerala has its own unique culture, distinct from the other states of India, and many of its own festivals . Onam, for example, is an exuberant festival that takes place in August/September to celebrate the abundance of nature.

8. Celebrate monsoon season. I have been besotted by the idea of being in Kerala when the monsoon arrives since seeing a documentary about it, called Chasing India’s Monsoon . While it is the off-season, and extremely hot and humid, it is considered a special time to be in Kerala. Many festivals take place and apparently Ayurvedic treatments are more effective.

9. Stay at a homestay. Lonely Planet rated Kerala as one of their top family friendly destinations and recommended a homestay.

10. Eat fresh food and glorious spices. Kerala is the spice bowl of India, and you can visit, and even stay, at the spice gardens. The local cuisine is rice-based, spiked with fresh spices and often eaten off a large, bright green banana leaf.

Though visited in February 2017 but still fresh in my memories

Our 1st visit to Kerala, where I got to know why it is called Gods own country, an ideal place to relax and forget about all your worries. Kerala is a beautiful state with beautiful people and the awesome food you can have. Here I am writing about my 4 days detailed journey to Kerala.

Once we reached Munnar, we checked into Grand Plaza Hotel and had our dinner there which was included in our plan.

Day 2- In the 1st half of the day, we covered Top station, Echo Point, Photo point, Mattupetty Dam , Rose Garden. Our driver suggested us to cover Top station first as normally people start with the lower places first and then proceed ahead to top station, we did the opposite to avoid the crowd and he was right, when we were coming back from the Top station, there were many people going there. We bought home made chocolate too. Again, Munnar to top station, the views are amazing, really beautiful.

After visiting all these places took a lunch break and had our meal in Shravan Bhawan. We took Kerala thali, ghee roast dosa, and few other things, everything was up to the mark, we loved the sooji payasam there. After having lunch and some rest in our hotel, we proceeded to KDHM, tata tea museum and Hydel Park and came back to our hotel by 6 PM.

It is better to include dinner in your hotel plan as Munnar does not have that many Restaurants.

Day 3- Our third day started with a delicious breakfast and then we proceeded to Alleppey. On our way, we stopped for an hour in Spice Garden Munnar, a beautiful forest where we got to know a lot about spices and Ayurveda. We reached Alleppey at around 4 PM and checked into Ramada Hotel where they upgraded our room and got the back water view rooms which were the icing on the cake. After checking in we got fresh and rushed to Alleppey beach to witness our first beach sunset.

We had our dinner in Thaff where we had Fish Pollichattu and Chicken Curry. The taste was average.

Day 4- This was a day at leisure as there is not much to see in Alleppey, what we actually wanted and as this is not the peak time, we got a deal for the houseboat for Rs 2000 for 2 hours and enjoyed our ride. The views were really beautiful, came back, enjoyed a little bit in our hotel after which we had our light lunch in a small bakery. Now was the time for shopping, bought few sarees from Maheswari, not sure if it is a reliable showroom or not but got lovely sarees.

Now was the time for Backwaters sunset in a shikhara. Trust me guys Shikara is much much better than a houseboat, you feel the waters in Shikhara, and we also enjoyed small canals, the experience was breathtaking.

We went to Royal park for Dinner and order fish fry, peas masala, egg masala and parotta and they all were delicious.

Day 5- Checked out of the hotel and reached Cochin airport in 2 hours, time to say final goodbye with heavy hearts, we would have cried, we loved Kerala that much.

The driver, the food, the views, the people, the hotels, the combined experience of them all made our journey really beautiful and unforgettable.

Upon our arrival in Cochin from Mumbai, we were received by our travel agent’s representative who took us to our hotel Cochin Palace. We completed all the check-in formalities and decided to take a quick nap before we headed out into this beautiful city. The hotel was really good and exactly as we had expected.

Staying in a houseboat is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Kerala . On the morning of the 2nd day, we checked out from our hotel and left our journey to Alleppey. As soon as we reached, a private AC premium houseboat awaited us in the beautiful backwaters of Kerala.

3. Visiting the top attractions in Munnar

Munnar is a green paradise in South India and every corner of the hill town proves that well. On the third day of our family trip to Kerala, we left for this paradise. En route, we stopped by and visited some famous attractions like Cheeyappara & Valara Waterfalls and Spice Plantations. It was indeed an experience of a lifetime for all of us.

A memorable trip to Kerala

Before starting anything I just want to write a small intro about myself. Although I'm a working person but at the same time I'm a frequent traveler. And I love to travel all over the world. But as I'm a working person and I've a family, so I need to plan my trip with basis of couple of constrains like number of days we are going to travel , budget, also need to check its a pick up season or not. Because if its a pickup season means your automatically your budget will be increased. Except all these things I need to check the climate when we will arrive on that place. Of-course no one wants to destroy their travel experience because of the bad weather.

As I told I'm a frequent traveler, so normally in every year two times we used to plan our family trip. This time we have planned for Kerala tour for 5 days. And exact date was 1st June to 6th June. Normally I always use a trick to make my trip. Before going to trip I usually called to few of travel agencies and asked them for tour itinerary. In this way we got some idea in how many days we can plan our trip and what will be the approx. budget for that tour.

Best time to tour Kerala

Although best time to visit Kerala is winter season in between September and March. Or if you are travelling Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment then you can choose Monsoon season from June to August.

But I went there in summer season because of the summer vacation in school of my son. From Aluva to Munnar is little bit less distance rather than Ernakulam to Munnar. So we started our journey from Hyderabad Deccan station to Aluva on 31st May 2019 at 11:15 am through 17230 / SABARI EXPRESS. And we reached our destination at 01:15 pm. It was a over night journey and as we booked Ac 3A, so it was a pleasant journey for us.

Munnar - Munnar (Full Day) 02/06/2019

Munnar - Thekkady (100Kms-2.30Hrs) 03/06/2019

Thekkady - Alleppey Houseboat (160Kms-4.5Hrs) 04/06/2019

Alleppey-Cherai Beach (110Kms-2.30Hrs) 05/06/2019

Cherai-Cochin Airport/ Railway/ Bus-Station (25Kms-1hrs) 06/06/2019

Day 1: After reach to Aluva there was pre booked car was waiting for us. And the driver picked us from the station, he was very well mannered, and he told us from here our journey is starting and he will be our guide for 5 days, he knows Malayalam and English very well. And then we are going toward our hotel. In between we halt in Chillithodu. There was a park where we enjoyed the elephant ridding.

After that elephant ridding again we are moving towards to the resort and as I remembered after 2 hours of journey at last we reached at resort in Munnar. In between we covered few sightseen like Spice and Tea plantation. Our hotel name was Mountain View. This hotel was too good because of its location. This hotel surrounded by the hills. So you can enjoy scenic beauty every time. This resort also having small small tea points. And this resort completely far from local areas. So here our day 1 trip going to end and we enjoyed night dinner in this resort. Food quality also very decent.

Munnar is almost 1600 Meter above from sea level. This place is famous for wholesale cardamom.

Day 2: Next day after breakfast we started our journey once again. In this day our main plan was sight scene of Munnar main tourist places. And as per the schedule we are moving towards Photo point and then Eravikulam National park. Nilgiri Tahr is the conserved animal here. After that we visited couple of places as follows like Echo point, Shooting point, Kundale lake, Tea museum, Blossom park, Pothenmedu view point, Rose garden and after all these sight scene again we comeback to the resort and enjoyed overnight stay.

Day 3: After breakfast we checkout from that resort and went to Thekkady. We enjoyed the beautiful journey through the hills and Valleys of Western ghat to reach this jungle destination. Thekkady is well known for reserve forest. Here we visited Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and did Jeep safari, for this safari we actually paid Rs.3500 and visited 4-5 places. Here you can visit Kathakali or you can enjoy elephant ride or you can opt for massage treatment. Thekkady is considered a heaven for natural spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and clove.

So after the sight scene of Thekkady we finally reached to our resort Elephant Route. And as expected it was a very pleasant stay. And we ordered fried rice for the dinner. So here our day 3 trip got ended.

Day 4: In the morning as per the instruction of our driver we check out from the resort after breakfast and proceed for the Alleppey house board. Alleppey Houseboat also known as Venice of the east. After reach to Alleppey, our boat started journey at 10 AM. And we enjoyed the backwater driving. And this boat was halt for 1 hr to complete our lunch. Which is prepared by one cook who is staying in that house boat. I loved the local dishes. So here I'm posting one pic of our lunch menu.

At 5:30 pm our boat halt as per Govt. rule and recharge the battery of the house boat. And from there we have enjoyed the sun set and fishing. And here I captured lot of good photos. And at the night we complete our dinner in house boat and stay in that boat over night. One more thing AC will be operated in boat 6 PM to 9 AM. For using AC full time you need to pay extra amount.

So here our day 4 trip got ended.

Day 5: So next we completed our breakfast on that house boat and drop us at Alleppey on 9AM once again. From there our driver picked up us and we are on the way to visit sightseeing places in Cochin which includes Chinese fishing nets, Fort Cochin, Jewish Synagogue, Mattancherry Palace , St. Francis Church, Marine Drive Jew Street etc and I remembered cochin fort and the oldest church very well so I'm uploading those pics here. And at last we reached to our resort Blue Waters Cherai at around 2pm. And completed our lunch in that resort and through out the day we enjoyed in the beach. And again came back to resort , complete our dinner and stay overnight there.So in this way our Day 5 trip got ended.

Original, unpublished research papers are invited for an edited volume titled Vulnerable Lives, Precarious Existence: Contemporary Narratives of Vulnerability from the Global South , scheduled to be published in 2024.

Vulnerability, a willed or unwilled susceptibility to being harmed physically or psychologically, and the related concept of precarity, manifest themselves in multitudinous forms across spatio-temporal locations and population groups. This is particularly evident in the Global South, characterized by shared socio-political and cultural peculiarities such as a long history of colonialization, slow development, poverty, rigid social hierarchies, migration and refugeeism. Entire groups of people located at the margins of various axes of identity exist in a vulnerable and precarious state owing to their caste, class, gender, ethnicity, age, and spatial location. Subjects are rendered vulnerable not only by social and cultural forces, but also by environmental factors such as natural disasters, biological factors such as age, disability and illness, personal and historical trauma, and significantly, by the functioning of biopower.

The precariousness of existence is nowhere more evident than in the Global South with a large majority of subjects being located at the margins of the mainstream social order. As such, narratives of vulnerability, precarity and resistance from the arena are of special significance in understanding and engaging with the lived realities of the Global South. The edited volume seeks to engage with contemporary narratives in order to identify a uniquely Global South model of vulnerability studies relevant to the 21st century, with emphasis on the modes in which subjects resist and accommodate vulnerability and precarity.

The themes include, but are not limited to, the following:

It is the final frontier for India’s most powerful leader in decades.

Narendra Modi, over his 10 years as prime minister, has made it his mission to turn a complex and diverse country of 1.4 billion people into something approaching a monolith dominated by his sweeping Hindu nationalist vision.

The news media, the national legislature, civil society, sometimes even the courts — all have largely been bent to his will. But one critical group of holdouts remains: some of India’s richest states, the engine of its rapid growth.

The future shape of the world’s largest democracy — and its economic trajectory — may rest on the power struggle that has ensued.

Mr. Modi, who is well placed to win a third term in a national election that will begin on April 19, is wielding an increasingly heavy hand in what his opponents call an unfair effort to drive out the governments of the states his party does not control.

They accuse Mr. Modi’s administration of delaying federal money for major projects; of jailing or hounding opposition leaders while shielding anyone who joins the prime minister’s party; of obstructing the delivery of basic services; and of throwing state politics into chaos.

The tensions are tearing at India’s delicate federal formula of power sharing and political competition, the glue holding the country together across 28 states and eight territories.

Regional leaders have described the behavior of the central government, which holds more power than in federal systems like the United States’, as that of a colonial overlord. In the south, the most developed and innovative part of India, officials have spoken of a “separate nation” for their region if the “patterns of injustice” continue.

Mr. Modi and his lieutenants have in turn accused the state leaders of harboring a “separatist mind-set” and pursuing politics that could “break the nation.”

India’s move toward more centralized governance could hurt its overall growth, analysts say, as such efforts have done in the past. Big national spending programs focus on basic development problems that the south mostly solved decades ago. If that region’s freedom to make investments based on its own needs is restricted, the effects could be far-reaching.

“It is ultimately self-destructive,” said P.T. Rajan, a cabinet minister in the government of the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Modi offers a simple solution: for the states governed by parties other than his Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., to come on board.

He often draws on automotive terminology to make his pitch. Those states, he says, could benefit from what he calls a “double engine” government, with one party — his own — working in sync at both the national and state levels.

If they do not comply, the states get wrench after wrench thrown into the works of their governments, officials say, making it difficult for them to deliver on election promises. The B.J.P., relentlessly expanding its base, waits in the wings.

Last month, the chief ministers of about a half-dozen states staged a dramatic demonstration near the seat of federal power in New Delhi.

With posters reading, “Our Blood, Our Sweat, Our Tax,” hanging behind them, they complained that Mr. Modi was using his outsize control over the distribution of revenues collected across India to entrench his party and hobble their own state governments.

At the same time, Mr. Modi was on a final lap of the country before the announcement of the election dates. In opposition states, he combined promises of billions of dollars in infrastructure and welfare projects with scathing criticism of the local parties.

They are scathing of him, too. They have repeatedly sued state governors appointed by New Delhi, who hold largely ceremonial roles, over complaints that they are stalling the work of elected governments.

“You’re playing with fire,” India’s chief justice, Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, told the central government after the governor in the opposition-controlled state of Punjab repeatedly prevented legislative work. “Will we continue to be a parliamentary democracy?”

In Tamil Nadu, officials said they were struggling to expand a subway line in the capital city, Chennai, because Mr. Modi’s administration was dragging its feet on New Delhi’s share of the funding.

In Kerala, on India’s southwestern coast, the state government is suing the Modi administration over what it says are arbitrary borrowing limits that have thrown the state’s budget into disarray and delayed payments.

In the western state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment capital, Mr. Modi’s officials have splintered the state’s two largest parties through a mix of pressure from investigative agencies and offers of incentives. Such “smash and grab” politics, as critics have branded it, has paved the way for the B.J.P. to emerge as a kingmaker in a coalition government.

In the Delhi capital region, the B.J.P. appears hellbent on destroying a smaller party that swept to power promising to improve basic services. The territory’s elected government has been stripped of important powers, and federal agencies have bogged down the top leaders of the party, Aam Aadmi, in corruption cases.

The party’s deputy leader and a key cabinet minister have been in jail for over a year. On Thursday, in a dramatic nighttime raid, government agents arrested Arvind Kejriwal , the party’s leader and Delhi’s chief minister, whom they have accused of financial crimes. He is the first serving chief minister to be arrested..

The bitter political dispute in Delhi is evident in overflowing sewage in parts of the city and long lines outside government hospitals.

Aam Aadmi sought to improve hospitals in part by relying on outside contractors to enter patient data. But the plan has been caught in the crossfire between Mr. Modi’s officials and the territory’s elected government, and the contractors pulled their staff from many hospitals after salaries were delayed for months.

“In their political fighting, it is the public that suffers,” said Adit Kumar, a cloth-seller who has diabetes, who, along with his wife, was waiting outside a crowded hospital in New Delhi one recent day.

Saurabh Bhardwaj, an Aam Aadmi official in Delhi, said Mr. Modi’s intention was clear: to push the country toward one-party rule.

“You reduced the state government’s work so much that people start saying that it’s better to bring the B.J.P. and only they can deliver,” Mr. Bhardwaj said. “That means the federal structure will collapse.”

The biggest federal-state fault line pits the more prosperous south against Mr. Modi’s support base in the north.

Except for a brief period in the state of Karnataka when the B.J.P. took control by orchestrating defections, the party has been unable to win power in the five southern states.

Officials there say that Mr. Modi is trying to hold them back for their refusal to buy in to his brand of politics, including his party’s stirring of Hindu-Muslim tensions and its push to make Hindi — which is not widely spoken in the south — a national language.

The resentment is amplified by complaints that the south gets proportionally less in return for the tax money it sends to New Delhi. Because the northern states have large populations and are far behind in basic development, they get a larger share of the revenues.

There are also serious concerns in the south that the redistribution of parliamentary seats once a long-delayed national census is finally held will punish the south for its success in reducing birthrates, a key to its relative affluence.

With its earlier investments in infrastructure, education and public health — the result of a unique mix of political, cultural and historical differences in the south — the region is better placed to propel India’s ambition for high-end manufacturing . Mr. Modi’s politics-driven approach, his opponents say, could undercut his ambitions for building India into a major economic power.

The federal finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, rejected claims that revenues were being unfairly distributed, saying the central government was “releasing, and releasing on time,” the states’ share.

“We want every part of the country to prosper,” Mr. Modi said in Parliament after the state leaders’ protest in New Delhi, casting himself as a strong proponent of “competitive, cooperative federalism.”

In pressuring state governments, analysts say, Mr. Modi is simply exploiting structural flaws in India’s Constitution, which created a republic — a quasi-federal union of states — after the British left in 1947.

The Indian National Congress party, which ruled over India uncontested in the first decades after independence, abused the outsize constitutional powers given to the central government over fiscal matters to quash the rise of competitors.

Starting in the late 1980s, however, the decline of Congress ushered in an era of coalition politics, with regional parties finding representation in New Delhi.

This was also the period when India opened its heavily centralized economy to the free market. As growth followed, the distribution of resources was subject to more push and pull between the central and state governments.

“The emergence of regional powers made the center commit to certain principles,” said Kalaiyarasan A., an assistant professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies. “The 1990s was a golden period of federalism.”

Today, Mr. Modi is seeking to remake Indian federalism with his “double engine” push.

In opposition-held states, Mr. Modi has offered infrastructure and welfare projects, branded with his name or that of his office, to pitch himself as India’s only driver of development and growth.

In engaging in joint projects, the state parties face a political cost: They will get the money only if they agree to the Modi branding.

And if they resist?

In 2022, Ms. Sitharaman, the finance minister, stopped at a shop in the southern state of Telangana that distributed rice rations as part of a joint program in which the central government provided the larger share of the funding. Mr. Modi’s picture was not displayed there. Ms. Sitharaman lashed out at state officials.

“This is the work that our prime minister is doing for his people,” Ms. Sitharaman said . “Our people will come and install the prime minister’s photo, and you will, as district administrator, ensure that shall not be removed, that shall not be torn, that shall not be affected.”
