In the digital era, the need for effective communication tools has led to a surge in the popularity of text-to-speech (TTS) software, and finding the best free text-to-speech software is essential for a variety of users, regardless of budget constraints.

Text-to-speech software skillfully converts written text into spoken words using advanced technology, though often without grasping the context of the content. The best text-to-speech software not only accomplishes this task but also offers a selection of natural-sounding voices, catering to different preferences and project needs.

This technology is invaluable for creating accessible content, enhancing workplace productivity, adding voice-overs to videos, or simply assisting in proofreading by vocalizing written work. While many of today’s best free word processors , such as Google Docs, include basic TTS features that are accurate and continually improving, they may not meet all needs.

Stand-alone, app-based TTS tools, which should not be confused with the best speech-to-text apps , often have limitations compared to more comprehensive, free text-to-speech software. For instance, some might not allow the downloading of audio files, a feature crucial for creating content for platforms like YouTube and social media.

In our quest to identify the best free text-to-speech software, we have meticulously tested various options, assessing them based on user experience, performance, and output quality. Our guide aims to help you find the right text-to-speech tool, whatever your specific needs might be.

The best free text-to-speech software overall

1. Natural Reader

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

Natural Reader offers one of the best free text-to-speech software experiences, thanks to an easy-going interface and stellar results. It even features online and desktop versions.

You'll find plenty of user options and customizations. The first is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including eBook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it spoken to you.

The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text-to-speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a browser extension to convert web content to speech more easily.

The TTS tool is available free, with three additional upgrades with more advanced features for power-users and professionals.

The best free custom-voice text-to-speech software

Balabolka website screenshot

2. Balabolka

There are a couple of ways to use Balabolka's top free text-to-speech software. You can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly.

In terms of output, you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create a custom voice.

In addition to reading words aloud, this free text-to-speech software can also save narrations as audio files in a range of formats including MP3 and WAV. For lengthy documents, you can create bookmarks to make it easy to jump back to a specific location and there are excellent tools on hand to help you to customize the pronunciation of words to your liking.

With all these features to make life easier when reading text on a screen isn't an option, Balabolka is the best free text-to-speech software around.

For more help using Balabolka, see out guide on how to convert text to speech using this free software.

The best free text-to-speech software for beginners

Panopreter Basic website screenshot

3. Panopreter Basic

Panopreter Basic is the best free text-to-speech software if you’re looking for something simple, streamlined, no-frills, and hassle-free.

It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name).

The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software.

If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available. This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer , the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.

The best free text-to-speech extension of Microsoft Word

WordTalk website screenshot

4. WordTalk

Developed by the University of Edinburgh, WordTalk is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text-to-speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using.

The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help.

There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.

The best free text-to-speech software for websites

Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader website screenshot

5. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader

Despite its basic looks, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text.

Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. One of the best free text-to-speech software right now, this can also convert text files to WAV format.

Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for an additional fee which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

The best free text-to-speech software: FAQs

What are the limitations of free tts software.

As you might expect, some free versions of TTS software do come with certain limitations. These include the amount of choices you get for the different amount of voices in some case. For instance, Zabaware gives you two for free, but you have to pay if you want more.

However, the best free software on this list come with all the bells and whistles that will be more than enough for the average user.

What is SAPI?

SAPI stands for Speech Application Programming Interface. It was developed by Microsoft to generate synthetic speech to allow computer programs to read aloud text. First used in its own applications such as Office, it is also employed by third party TTS software such as those featured in this list.

In the context of TTS software, there are more SAPI 4 voices to choose from, whereas SAPI 5 voices are generally of a higher quality.

Should I output files to MP3 or WAV?

Many free TTS programs give you the option to download an audio file of the speech to save and transfer to different devices.

MP3 is the most common audio format, and compatible with pretty much any modern device capable of playing back audio. The WAV format is also highly compatible too.

The main difference between the two is quality. WAV files are uncompressed, meaning fidelity is preserved as best as possible, at the cost of being considerably larger in size than MP3 files, which do compress.

Ultimately, however, MP3 files with a bit rate of 256 kbps and above should more than suffice, and you'll struggle to tell the difference when it comes to speech audio between them and WAV files.

How to choose the best free text-to-speech software

When selecting the best free text-to-speech software is best for you depends on a range of factors (not to mention personal preference).

Despite how simple the concept of text-to-speech is, there are many different features and aspects to such apps to take into consideration. These include how many voice options and customizations are present, how and where they operate in your setup, what formats they are able to read aloud from and what formats the audio can be saved as.

With free versions, naturally you'll want to take into account how many advanced features you get without paying, and whether any sacrifices are made to performance or usability.

Always try to keep in mind what is fair and reasonable for free services - and as we've shown with our number one choice, you can get plenty of features for free, so if other options seem bare in comparison, then you'll know you can do better.

How we test the best free text-to-speech software

Our testing process for the best free text-to-speech software is thorough, examining all of their respective features and trying to throw every conceivable syllable at them to see how they perform.

We also want to test the accessibility features of these tools to see how they work for every kind of user out there. We have highlighted, for instance, whether certain software offer dyslexic-friendly fonts, such as the number two on our list, Natural Reader.

We also bear in mind that these are free versions, so where possible we compare and contrast their feature sets with paid-for rivals.

Finally, we look at how well TTS tools meet the needs of their intended users - whether it's designed for personal use or professional deployment.

The Best Text-to-Speech Apps and Tools for Every Type of User

Reading is great, but sometimes you want or need to listen. let your computer or phone read aloud to you with the top text-to-speech tools for accessibility, productivity, and enjoyment..

Justin Pot

Some people struggle with reading text on a screen, or physically can't. Others might want their computer to read something to them aloud while they do something else. There are plenty of reasons to use a text-to-speech tool, also called a screen reader. For example, I like listening to my computer read my writing while I edit because I tend to miss fewer mistakes that way. If you want your computer or phone to read to you, we have the best tools for the job.

We recommend a few standalone text-to-speech apps here, sure, but you probably don't need them. That's because every operating system, and several well-known pieces of software, offer a text-to-speech feature, and they're all quite good. Similarly, most devices and some writing apps also include speech-to-text tools so that you can dictate rather than type. In this list of the best text-to-speech tools, we show you where to find these features while also pointing out a few of the best standalone apps.

Best Text-to-Speech App for Windows

type text to speech app

Balabolka is a free downloadable app for Windows (I tested it on Windows 11; it works on Windows XP or later). You can paste text into the app or open almost any document file format directly, such as text files, Word documents, and even ebooks. You can then press play to start listening to the app read aloud, or you can export an audio file if you prefer. Balabolka doesn't have many voices by default, and the ones it does have are fairly robotic. You can add more voices, though, and customize the application in all kinds of ways. Even though the app is a bit clunky, it’s the best Windows-specific app I’ve found outside of the one built into Edge and Microsoft Office (which I prefer).

Microsoft/Edge Read Aloud in Immersive Reader

type text to speech app

Immersive Reader

Microsoft Office applications have a built-in text-to-speech feature, and the quality of the voices is fantastic. In any document, click the View tab, select Immersive Reader, and then press the play button that appears at the bottom. You hear your document read back to you with the corresponding words highlighted as it goes. Immersive Reader is perfect for copy editing and reviewing long documents. Microsoft Edge has this feature, too (it's one of the best Microsoft Edge tricks ). Just go to Immersive Reader mode and then Read Aloud.

Best Text-to-Speech Browser Extension

type text to speech app

Read Aloud is an extension for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox that can read whatever website you currently have open. Just click the button in the toolbar to start listening. You can control playback and follow along with the text in the pop-up window. A wide variety of voices are in the settings, including premium ones from Amazon and Google. It's the best tool I could find for listening to Google Docs, and there's also support for PDF files and Kindle books. I tried the PDF feature and it worked better for those documents than the other apps I tested.

Select to Speak

type text to speech app

Select to Speak (Android)

Android's Select to Speak feature can be found in the settings under Accessibility. Turn it on and you can have it read text in any app when you either swipe up from the bottom of the screen with two fingers or press both of the volume keys at once, depending on how you configure it. Controls show up toward the bottom of the screen, allowing you to start and control playback. Select to Speak is simple to use and supports a variety of voices, which you can configure in the settings. There's even experimental support for reading the text inside images.

Spoken Content

type text to speech app

Spoken Content (macOS)

Every Apple device comes with Spoken Content , a feature that uses Siri's high-quality voices to read text out loud. On a Mac, you can enable the feature by heading to System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content and checking the Speak Selection option, which allows you to trigger the current document or selected text in any application using a keyboard shortcut (Option-Esc). As the tool reads the text, it highlights the corresponding words on the page in most applications, allowing you to read along. On-screen buttons give you control to speed up, slow down, pause, and so forth. It's the fastest way to listen to text I found on any platform.

Spoken Content Mobile

type text to speech app

Spoken Content (iOS)

The iPhone's text-to-speech feature is very similar to the one on macOS and it even has the same name. You can turn it on in the Settings app under Accessibility. Once Spoken Content is enabled, any text you highlight in any application will have a Speak option, which you tap to activate. There are also options for reading all text on the current screen, with an optional always-on control button.

Best Text-to-Speech Web Reader

type text to speech app

The free app TTSMaker is the best text-to-speech app I can find for running in a browser. Just copy your text and paste it into the box, fill out the captcha, click Convert to Speech and the application will start reading your text for you. Even better, you can download the reading as an MP3 file and even use it in commercial projects. Most similar services charge a subscription for downloading audio and commercial usage, so this is a good deal. Even better, there's a wide variety of voices and most of them sound quite good.

What is text to speech

Text to speech, also known as TTS, read aloud, or even speech synthesis . It simply means using artificial intelligence to read words aloud be; it from a PDF , email, docs, or any website. There isn’t a voice artist recording phrases or words, or even the entire article. Speech generation is done on-the-fly, in real time, with natural sounding AI voices.

And that’s the beauty of it all. You don’t have to wait. You simply press play and artificial intelligence makes the words come alive instantly, in a very natural sounding voice. You can change voices and accents across multiple languages.

Listen to any article. Easily scan any printed material and convert the image to audio.

With Speechify’s API, we can offer our users a new and accessible way to consume our content. We’ve seen that readers who choose to listen to articles with Speechify are on average 20% more engaged than users who choose not to listen.

Susy Botello

Thanks for sharing this.I love this feature. I just tweeted at you on how much I like it. The voice is great and not at all like the text-to-speech I am used to listening to. I am a podcaster and I think this will help a lot of people multitask a bit, especially if they are interrupted with incoming emails or whatever. You can read-along but continue reading if your eyes need to go elsewhere. Hope you keep this. It’s already in other web publications. I also see it in some news sites. So I think it could become a standard that readers expect when they read online. Can I vote twice?

Renato Vargas

I just started using Medium more and I absolutely love this feature. I’ve listened to my own stories and the Al does the inflections just as I would. Many complain that they can’t read their own stories, but let’s be honest. How many stories would go without an audio version if you had to do all of them yourself? I certainly appreciate it. Thanks for this!!

Oh! How cool – I love it 🙂 The voice is surprisingly natural sounding! My eyes took a much appreciated rest for a bit. I’ve been a long time subscriber to Audible on Amazon. I think this is Great 🙂 Thank you!

Paola Rios Schaaf

Super excited about this! We are all spending too much time staring at our screens. Using another sense to take in the great content at Medium is awesome.

Hi Warren, I am one of those small, randomly selected people, and I ABSOLUTELY love this feature. I have consumed more ideas than I ever have on Medium. And also as a non-native English speaker, this is really helping me to improve my pronunciation. Keep this forevermore! Love, Ananya:)

This is the single most important feature you can role out for me. I simply don’t have the time to read all the articles I would like to on Medium. If I could listen to the articles I could consume at least 3X the amount of Medium content I do now.

Andrew Picken

Love this feature Warren. I use it when I’m reading, helps me churn through reading and also stay focused on the article (at a good speed) when my willpower is low! Keeping me more engaged..

I was THRILLED the other day when I saw the audio option. I didn’t know how it got there, but I pressed play, and then I was blown away hearing the words that I wrote being narrated

Neeramitra Reddy

LOVE THISSS. As someone who loves audio almost as much as reading, this is absolute gold

What is text to speech (TTS)?

Text-to-speech goes by a few names. Some refer to it as TTS,  read aloud , or even speech synthesis ; for the more engineered name. Today, it simply means using  artificial intelligence  to read words aloud be; it from a PDF, email, docs, or any website. Instantly turn text into audio. Listen in English, Italian, Portuguese,  Spanish , or more and choose your accent and character to personalize your experience.

How does AI text to speech work?

Beautifully. Speech synthesis works by installing an app like Speechify either on your device or as a browser extension. AI scans the words on the page and  reads it out loud , without any lag. You can change the default voice to a custom voice, change accents, languages, and even increase or decrease the speaking rate.

AI has made significant progress in synthesizing voices. It can pick up on formatted text and change tone accordingly. Gone are the days where the voices sounded  robotic . Speechify is revolutionizing that.

Once you install the TTS mobile app, you can easily convert text to speech from any website within your browser, read aloud your email, and more. If you install it as a  browser extension , you can do just the same on your laptop. The web version is OS agnostic. Mac or Windows, no problem.

What is the text-to-speech service?

A text-to-speech service is a tool, like Speechify text to speech, that transforms your written words into spoken words. Imagine typing out a message and having it read out loud by a digital voice – that’s what TTS services, like Speechify TTS do.

What are the benefits of text to speech?

TTS technology offers many benefits, like helping those with reading difficulties, providing rest for your eyes, multitasking by listening to content, improving pronunciation and language learning, and making content accessible to a wider audience.

How is Speechify TTS better than Murf AI text to speech, Google Voice, or TTSReader?

Speechify TTS stands out by offering a more natural and human-like voice quality, a wider range of customization options, and user-friendly integration across devices. Plus, our dedication to accessibility means that we ensure a seamless and inclusive experience for all users.

The 6 Best Free Text-to-Speech Apps for iPhone

These free text-to-speech apps will make your iPhone read out onscreen text.

Text to speech is an assistive technology that reads digital text aloud and can assist with writing and editing, improve focus, or help people who struggle to read.

These text-to-speech apps for iPhone will make your life easier, regardless of your reasons for using them.

1. Text to Speech!

This eponymous app goes the extra mile to do what it says on the tin. Simple and sleek, it offers 95 different voices and 38 languages to choose from and allows you to change the rate and pitch of the voice—giving you full control. Simply start typing inside the app, and it will begin saying the words.

Through the Settings tab at the top right, you can change all the voice and app settings to suit your needs. The app will also let you export the audio or copy the text you've written to the clipboard to paste elsewhere. Quite a cool feature of the app is that you can use it to mix into phone calls, but keep in mind that you won't hear that on your own device.

Download: Text to Speech! (Free, in-app purchases available)

2. Speak4Me

Speak4Me works much the same as Text to Speech, offering three simple tabs: one for Favorites (saved past recordings), one for the actual text to speech, and one for Settings . You can change the rate and pitch of the voice, with an array of voices to choose from and a reasonable variety of different languages available.

You can share the recordings of the audio across social messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Messenger. Or you can save them to your device for later use.

There's a voice animation feature that doesn't add anything functionality-wise but is a nice superficial feature. There isn't an in-app way to share text to speech in phone calls, but this can be circumvented by setting your phone to loudspeaker and using the Listen button on the app for the person you're calling to hear.

Download: Speak4Me (Free, in-app purchases available)

3. Voice Aloud Reader

Voice Aloud Reader, by Marcin Olawski, is a very capable and responsive app that saves you time by reading aloud digital text from websites, books, and whatever you put into the app yourself. It has a variety of languages, but only three voices for English. While the choices for English voices may be a little limited, the app more than makes up for it with its capability and unique features.

Voice Aloud Reader has an in-built web browser, where you can search webpages and add them to the reader to be read aloud. Through the My Library tab, the app can read books and files aloud. The app comes with A Christmas Carol, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Alice in Wonderland pre-loaded, but by pressing the Add icon in the top right you can import documents of your own.

This app, used in conjunction with text-to-speech for Windows software , will ensure that you're always saving time by listening to books or articles rather than having to read them.

Download: Voice Aloud Reader (Free, in-app purchases available)

Speak is very responsive and has a simplified UI that allows you to learn the app's layout within minutes. You use the central box to input words, then press the Speak button to hear them played back to you. Like with the Text to Speak! and Speak4Me apps, you can alter the pitch and speed of the audio using controls just below the Speak button.

You can Export your entire history as a CSV file or individual audio recordings. There's a good range of languages and voices available. Unfortunately, there is no ability to import books or web pages, but you can always circumvent this by copying and pasting text from a webpage or e-book.

There is also no in-app feature to use the app while on phone calls, but this can be circumvented by using a loudspeaker while on a call.

Download: Speak (Free, in-app purchases available)

5. Text to Speech: Audio Books

Text to Speech: Audio Books by Vulcan Labs is simple to navigate and responsive. It offers a great list of options for your text-to-speech needs. With the ability to import from Gallery , Camera , Text , Links , or Cloud , you can input any text from almost anywhere and have it read out to you by cutting edge AI that sounds more lifelike than the voices offered across the other apps on this list.

While the number of voices offered on the free version is quite limited, they are very lifelike, which makes listening to text feel more natural. You can play around with the speed of the playback, making the voice faster if you want to get through a block of text as quick as possible.

Texts can be categorized into Folders for easy access, and the app will highlight the word is being spoken so you can follow along. The quality of the voices offered here make this app a worthy consideration for your text-to-speech needs.

Download: Text to Speech: Audio Books (Free, subscription available)

6. Native iOS Text to Speech

iOS has a very capable native text-to-speech feature that can be enabled through Settings . This feature has a couple of different voices available for a wide variety of languages, with more available to download. You can change the speed of the text-to-speech and enable highlighting of the text being spoken to help you follow along.

It'll also Speak Words While Typing if you want, and you can enable Hold to Speak Predictions to assist you with finding the right word to text to someone.

A cool, unique feature that native iOS text-to-speech offers is the ability to add custom pronunciations, which you can spell out or dictate. You can't see a history of text you've had turned into speech, but you can always use online tools to turn text-to-speech into MP3 audio .

Turning Text Into Speech

Whatever your needs for text-to-speech, the apps featured above, as well as the native iOS text-to-speech feature, will surely suit your needs. And best of all, they're all available to use for free.

Key Features of AI Voice Generator Software

AI voice generator software typically includes features that help users transform text, existing audio, and other media into voices with adjustable qualities to meet their needs. Additionally, many of these generative AI tools come with features to make enterprise-level collaboration and content creation run more smoothly. In general, expect to find the following features in AI voice generators:

Text to Speech

Text to speech (TTS) is a type of AI technology that changes written text into spoken audio. Most AI voice generator software allows users to upload text of different lengths and in different languages in order to generate a vocal version of the same content.

Voice Cloning

With voice cloning, AI technology can capture the content, tonality, speed, and other characteristics of a person’s voice in a recording and use that information to create a faithful replica or clone of that unique voice. With this capability, users can generate entirely new content and recordings that sound like they were spoken by that person.

Custom Voices or Voice Changing

On some AI voice platforms, if you submit your own voice clip or directly record your voice into the app, you can then change that voice into a completely different character, adjusting the tone, accent, mood, and other features. Many users want this feature for creative projects like video game development.

Multilingual Voice Library

Most generative AI voice tools give users access to a diverse, multilingual library of predeveloped voice models. Through extensive training, these TTS models are prepared to create voice transcripts and recordings that accurately adhere to each language’s specific pronunciations, tonalities, pauses, and other characteristics of that language’s speech patterns.

Dubbing and Translation

Taking TTS a step further, dubbing and translation with AI make the effort to translate an existing text or voice recording into a different spoken language. For dubbing specifically, existing recordings — often movies, commercials, and other visual media — receive a new vocal overlay, typically dubbed in a different language by an AI model.

APIs and Third-Party Integrations

With the help of APIs and built-in third-party integrations, users can more easily add AI voice creation and editing capabilities directly into their app and product development workflows. A growing number of AI voice tools are adding relevant third-party integrations to creative platforms as well as social and distribution channels.

How We Evaluated AI Voice Generators

To evaluate these AI voice generators and other leaders in this AI market sector, we looked at each tool’s standard and unique features while focusing on the following criteria. Each criterion is weighted based on its importance to the typical business user:

Vocal Quality – 30%

Needless to say, vocal quality, fidelity, and usability are the most important aspects of an AI voice generator. Within this criterion, we evaluated each tool based on the realistic quality of AI voices, the accuracy of AI voice generations, the availability of different voices and languages, and the ability to granularly edit generated voice products. We also considered whether a tool offered users the ability to customize or record their own voices and voiceovers.

Enterprise Scalability – 30%

Enterprise scalability is hugely important for AI voice generators since many companies invest in this type of platform to create global marketing, sales, and product content at scale.

For enterprise scalability, we assessed each tool’s global library of voices and dialects, its adherence to enterprise security and compliance standards, features that go beyond voice content production, collaboration and sharing capabilities, integrations with relevant third-party tools and platforms, and the scalability of APIs. We placed a special emphasis on each tool’s enterprise-level plans and the additional features that are available at this level.

Pricing – 20%

Pricing is a crucial factor when considering AI voice technology, as the cost of these tools varies widely for the features you get at that price point. As part of this evaluation, we identified whether each tool offered a free plan option, we compared how prices scale from package to package, we considered how many price points were available to users, and we looked at the value of the features added to each tier, particularly enterprise-level tiers.

Ease of Use – 20%

AI voice tools are supposed to make content creation a simpler task; for this reason, ease of use and accessibility were also important factors in how we judged each of these tools. We looked at each tool’s no-code features, the user-friendliness of voice editing tools, the quality of customer support at each subscription tier, and the availability of self-service resources and community forums for getting started and troubleshooting.

Future of AI in Speech Recognition

You Don’t Have to Type Anymore

Welcome to the golden age of voice dictation.

an image of a mouth with text bubbles

As a little girl, I often found myself in my family’s basement, doing battle with a dragon. I wasn’t gaming or playing pretend: My dragon was a piece of enterprise voice-dictation software called Dragon Naturally Speaking, launched in 1997 (and purchased by my dad, an early adopter).

As a kid, I was enchanted by the idea of a computer that could type for you. The premise was simple: Wear a headset, pull up the software, and speak. Your words would fill a document on-screen without your hands having to bear the indignity of actually typing. But no matter how much I tried to enunciate, no matter how slowly I spoke, the program simply did not register my tiny, high-pitched voice. The page would stay mostly blank, occasionally transcribing the wrong words. Eventually, I’d get frustrated, give up, and go play with something else.

Much has changed in the intervening decades. Voice recognition—the computer-science term for the ability of a machine to accurately transcribe what is being said—is improving rapidly thanks in part to recent advances in AI. Today, I’m a voice-texting wizard, often dictating obnoxiously long paragraphs on my iPhone to friends and family while walking my dog or driving. I find myself speaking into my phone’s text box all the time now, simply because I feel like it. Apple updated its dictation software last year , and it’s great. So are many other programs. The dream of accurate speech-to-text—long held not just in my parents’ basement but by people all over the world—is coming together. The dragon has nearly been slain.

“All of these things that we’ve been working on are suddenly working,” Mark Hasegawa-Johnson, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, told me. Scientists have been researching speech-recognition tools since at least the mid-20th century ; early examples include the IBM Shoebox , a rudimentary computer housed within a wooden box that could measure sounds from a microphone and associate them with 16 different preprogrammed words. By the end of the 1980s, voice-dictation models could process thousands of words . And by the late ’90s, as the personal-computing boom was in full swing, dictation software was beginning to reach consumers. These programs were joined in the 2010s by digital assistants such as Siri, but even these more advanced tools were far from perfect.

“For a long time, we were making gradual, incremental progress, and then suddenly things started to get better much faster,” Hasegawa-Johnson said. Experts pointed me to a few different factors that helped accelerate this technology over the past decade. First, researchers had more digitized speech to work with. Large open-source data sets were compiled, including LibriSpeech, which contains 1,000 hours of recorded speech from public-domain audiobooks. Consumers also started regularly using voice tools such as Alexa and Siri, which likely gave private companies more data to train on. Data are key to quality: The more speech data that a model has access to, the better it can recognize what’s being said—“water,” say, not “daughter” or “squatter.” Models were once trained on just a few thousand hours of speech; now they are trained on a lifetime’s worth.

The models themselves also got more sophisticated as part of larger, industry-wide advancements in machine learning and AI. The rise of end-to-end neural networks—networks that could directly pair audio with words rather than trying to transcribe by breaking them down into syllables —has also accelerated models’ accuracy. And hardware has improved to allow more units of processing power on our personal devices, which allows bigger and fancier models to run in the palm of your hand.

Of course, the tools are not yet perfect. For starters, their quality can depend on who is speaking: Voice-recognition models have been found to have higher error rates for Black speakers compared with white speakers, and they also sometimes struggle to understand people with dysarthric, or irregular, speech, such as those with Parkinson’s disease. (Hasegawa-Johnson, who compiles stats related to these issues, is the principal researcher at the Speech Accessibility Project , which aims to train models on more dysarthric speech to improve their outputs.)

The future of voice dictation will also be further complicated by the rise of generative AI. Large language models of the sort that power ChatGPT can also be used with audio, which would allow a program to better predict which word should come next in a sequence. For example, when transcribing, such an audio tool might reason that, based on the context, a person is likely saying that their dog— not their frog —needs to go for its morning walk.

Yet like their text counterparts, voice-recognition tools that use large language models can “hallucinate,” transcribing words that were never actually spoken. A team of scholars that recently documented violent and unsavory hallucinations , as well as those that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, coming from OpenAI’s new audio model, Whisper. (In response to a request for comment about this research, a spokesperson for OpenAI said, in part, “We continually conduct research on how we can improve the accuracy of our models, including how we can reduce hallucinations.”)

So goes the AI boom: The technology is both creating impressive new things and introducing new problems. In voice dictation, the chasm between two once-distinct mediums, audio and text, is closing, leaving us to appreciate the marvel available in our hands—and to proceed with caution.
