You’ve got questions?

We’ve got answers! There is quite a bit that goes into a Wonderlic Test and fully explaining it takes a lot more than a couple of paragraphs. Below you will find some of the most often requested information. (Click each title to display the information.) Of course, there’s always more so click the “Learn More” button below to jump to our full FAQ if you want even more in-depth information.

The Wonderlic Personnel Test (also known as a Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test) was created in 1936 by E.F. Wonderlic, who was at the time a graduate student at Northwestern University. The test was originally designed to test the overall aptitude of potential employees for certain jobs or tasks. The test is sometimes called a “quick IQ test” because of the short 12-minute time limit placed on the test. While it is not the same as an IQ test , it does focus on determining overall cognitive abilities in the areas of math, vocabulary, and reasoning.

While the original test has undergone many changes, including a revision in 2007 to update the questions to those more relevant to the 21st century – the main aim and the format of the test has remained largely unchanged. A number of different versions of the test have been developed to ascertain a wide range of qualities, such as personal traits, skills, cognitive ability, personality and even behavioral liability.

Two of the more notable organizations that regularly use some version of Wonderlic Personnel Tests are the US Military and the NFL. During WWII, the US Navy began using Wonderlic tests to identify individuals possessing the right traits and skill sets to be pilots and navigators. In the 1970’s, Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry began to use Wonderlic tests to help evaluate player performance and the test is still used today as a part of the NFL combine. In fact, a simplified version of the test is also included in more recent versions of the Madden NFL video games.

Test subjects have 12 minutes to answer a series of 50 multiple choice questions that get subsequently more difficult as the test progresses. Some sample test questions include questions like:

  • -41 + 13 equals:
  • Tom and Chad stand on the equator, 12 meters apart. Chad walks 6 meters due East and Tom walks 6 meters due west. How far apart are they now?
  • Taylor is going on a road trip that is 600 miles long. Her friend recommends that she buy engine oil A because it will save her 60 cents in gas for every 20 miles of the trip. Oil A, however, will cost $35. Is it worthwhile for Taylor to buy the oil if she has a coupon for $10 off the price?
  • Do the word refrain and retain have opposite or similar meanings or no relationship?

Both the limited time frame and the increasing difficulty of the questions help to determine how well a person performs and makes decisions under stress.

Wonderlic test scores are calculated very simply. For each of the 50 questions answered correctly within the allotted 12 minutes, the test taker receives one point. So, if 26 questions are answered correctly, the test taker would receive a score of 26 out of 50.

20 correct answers out of 50 in the allotted time of 12 minutes is the average score for the Wonderlic test. While “good” is a subjective term, to be above average one would have to score a 21 or greater on the test.

While a Wonderlic test is not an IQ test, its results can be charted similarly to common IQ tests like the Stanford-Binet or Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale . Wonderlic results can be scored on a bell curve, with the highest and lowest scores representing the highest and lowest percentiles, with the middle representing the majority of scores.

A score of 16 or below represents roughly the lowest 25th percentile, a score between 17 and 26 represents roughly the middle 50th percentile and a score of 27 or higher represents the top 25th percentile, with a score of 40 or higher representing the top 1%.

wonderlic score percentiles

The exception to this rule seems to be at the position of Quarterback, where the ability to think independently seems to be of greater advantage. Several of the first round draft picks and highest producing quarterbacks in the last several years have all scored exceptionally high on their Wonderlic assessment. These include Aaron Rodgers, Sam Bradford, Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford, Eli Manning, Alex Smith, Carson Wentz and Blaine Gabbert, who all scored a 35 or above.

Conversely, a number of other industries also have a target score that is considered most optimal for that profession. Here are a few of the median scores for these industries or professions:

  • Systems analyst — 32
  • Accountant — 28
  • Executive — 28
  • Teacher — 28
  • Librarian — 27
  • Electronics Technician — 26
  • Salesperson — 25
  • Secretary — 24
  • Electrician — 23
  • Nurse — 23
  • Cashier — 21
  • Firefighter — 21
  • Receptionist — 21
  • Security guard — 17
  • Warehouse worker — 15
  • Janitor — 14

Validity is measured in two ways in standardized testing. This includes reliability over time and reliability of prediction of outcomes. To determine the reliability over time, a sample pool of individuals can be tested over a period of time. If their scores remain largely unchanged regardless of changes in life circumstances and increased education then it shows the testing is being conducted in regards to traits that do not change over time.

In 1982, a study was done of 57 adults who twice took Wonderlic tests over a five-year period. The test-retest reliability was reported as being 94%. In terms of overall validity, a 1989 article in Psychological Reports gave the test a correlation coefficient of r=.87 in comparison to the similar Pearson test which scored r=.21.

A more recent article from Psychological Reports, however, showed that Wonderlic tests were highly accurate at testing overall intellectual functioning, but is not as accurate at determining levels of fluid or crystallized intelligence . In other words, it is great at identifying sharp, quick-witted concrete thinkers, but not so great at measuring the intelligence of “outside-the-box” thinkers.

Today, a number of different organizations from Fortune 500 companies to the NFL all utilize Wonderlic testing to determine a wide variety of qualities they are looking for. In some cases, they are looking specifically for very high scorers and in others, they are looking for individuals to score in very specific ranges. The scores themselves are not necessarily indicative of a “good” or “bad” candidate, but rather one that does or does not possess a very specific set of skills and traits an employer might be looking for to fill a certain position.

Before we dive into the content of the Wonderlic Personnel Test, it is important to have a visual image of what the test looks like. The image above points at the major components you should be aware of: the timer at the top right corner, the navigation buttons which allow you to go back and forth between questions, the multiple-choice format which will be dominant throughout the majority of the test.

Free Wonderlic Practice Test

Go ahead and take our Free Wonderlic-style practice test, which includes 30 questions and has a time limit of 8 minutes. This is basically a simulation of the QuickTest (WPT-Q). Upon completion, you’ll receive a detailed score report that will tell you how you did on each topic. You’ll also be able to review the answers and explanations.

What Types of Questions are on the Wonderlic Test?

The Wonderlic Personnel Test is made up of four general categories: General Knowledge, Abstract Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Numerical Reasoning. The table below shows a basic breakdown of each question type, followed by a more detailed description of each with sample questions. As you can see, there are LOTS of question types to review.

Some of the questions will test topics like general knowledge, finding errors, ordering things chronologically, and recognizing dates.

Abstract Reasoning

This section tests spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and abilities to manipulate and visualize 2D and 3D shapes. These include questions that will have you manipulating shapes such as tiles or folded pieces of paper.

See example

wonderlic-abstract-sample

Can you figure out which figure completes the missing frame in the sequence above?

The shapes move from left to right one step in each frame. They are brought back to the beginning of the sequence in a loop.

In addition, the first shape on the left changes from being filled with color to being empty every two steps, and so does the last shape on the right.

In the fifth missing frame, the square should be in the middle and filled with color, as seen in answers a,b. The diamond should show up first and not be filled. Thus, the correct answer is b.

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning questions test your knowledge of the English language and your logical and deductive reasoning abilities. These questions generally consist of grammar, analogies, vocabulary, and drawing conclusions. There will also be questions that cover topics like metaphors, anagrams, word scrambles, sentence scrambles, word groups, and identifying words that are similar or different.

Graceful is to clumsy, as late is to…

Graceful and clumsy are opposites. The opposite of late is punctual. See more analogy examples in our Wonderlic practice test .

Numerical Reasoning

The Numerical Reasoning category will test your mathematical abilities the most. Many of these questions are word problems, so they are not just math problems, but are a combination of words and numbers. They will test your reading comprehension abilities in addition to your mathematical abilities.

Questions cover topics such as algebra, percentages, ratios, decimals, and averages. There will also be number series questions, where you will have to look at a series of numbers and figure out what number comes next in the sequence.

These questions will likely be the most difficult and time-consuming questions, especially since you will not be allowed to use a calculator.

$5.60 is what percentage of $17.50?

  • None of the above

The answer is 32%. The quickest way to solve this question is to use estimation. Let’s follow the steps below:

  • Let’s turn 5.6 and 17.5 to 56 and 175 which is more convenient.  We can try and think how many times 56 fits into 175. 50 times 3 is 150, so we can start by multiplying 56 by 3. This is like 3x(50+6)=150+18=168.
  • That’s very close to 176. We now understand that 56 is almost one third (33%) of 176, but we konw that it’s just  abit less than that because 168 is still far from 176 by 8.
  • We look for an answer that is close enough to 33%  and indeed answer C is 32%.

While the material covered on the test is not particularly complicated or advanced, the test is difficult because of its time constraints. We recommend that you start by taking a free Wonderlic practice test which is offered below to get a feel of the real thing.

What are the Two Wonderlic Personnel Test Versions?

There are two slightly different versions of the Wonderlic Personnel Test.

  • Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT-R). The standard Wonderlic Personnel Test, is made up of 50 multiple-choice questions and is administered in 12 minutes. This test is usually proctored and will be administered early on in your application process. However, you may have to take the Wonderlic Personnel Test – QuickTest (WPT-Q) before taking the WPT-R.
  • Wonderlic Personnel Test – QuickTest (WPT-Q). This is a shorter version of the test, which includes only 30 questions and lasts 8 minutes. The WPT-Q is not proctored and is often taken from home. It is generally used as a precursor to the WPT-R. This means you may be asked to take this from home, and only if you do well, you will be called in to take the longer version.

The content of the two tests is the same, as they only differ in length, so our practice materials will prepare you for whichever version you are taking.

How Are Scores Calculated & What’s Considered a Good Score

On the WPT-R, each question is worth 1 point.  If you get every question right, you would get a perfect score of 50. On the WPT-Q, each question is worth 1.66 points, meaning that a perfect score would still be 50 even though there are only 30 questions.

The score for the specific position you are applying for will vary according to the employer’s identity, needs, and the job in hand. Once you have finished taking the test, a detailed score report will automatically be sent to the employer for review. This report will show how your score compares to employer’s target score, how well you did in comparison to the group of candidates competing with you on the job, and also how well you did in comparison to the general population of candidates.

The average score on the Wonderlic test is 20 correct answers out of 50. The graph below shows you roughly what a “good score” is, in terms of the general population. Remember, in the end, a good score depends on the what the employer has set in advance when designing the screening process for the position.

To quote from scientific research conducted on this topic:

“its items are based on the original Otis Test of Mental Ability (Wonderlic, 1983) and since scores correlate fairly well (56 to .80) with aptitude G (General Learning Ability) of the General Aptitude Test Battery (Wonderlic, 1983) and very highly (.93) with the WAIS Full Scale IQ (Dodrill, 1981).” Read the Source on ResearchGate

How do I practice the Wonderlic test?

The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test has been used for over 80 years to assess the aptitude and problem-solving skills of prospective employees and NFL players. But unless you know how the unique scoring system works, it's nearly impossible to interpret what your Wonderlic score really means.

This comprehensive guide breaks down everything you need to know about Wonderlic scores, from the basics of the test and scoring to expert tips on achieving your best score.

For free practice check out our Wonderlic assessment practice test .

Shlomik Silbiger

Shlomik , Wonderlic Test Expert at  JobTestPrep .

The Wonderlic test consists of 50 questions designed to measure cognitive ability in areas like math, logic, and reasoning. Test-takers have just 12 minutes to answer as many questions as possible, with the goal being to demonstrate strong decision-making and problem-solving skills under pressure.

Each correct answer is worth one point, allowing for scores that range from a low of zero to the highest possible score of 50. Typically, individuals manage to correctly respond to approximately 50% of the items, resulting in an average score on the Wonderlic test of around 20 .

Understanding Wonderlic Score Percentile Benchmarks

wonderlic report score

Due to the unique scoring system, the meaning of any given Wonderlic score varies depending on factors like the intended career field. However, some key benchmarks stand out:

  • 10 points or less: Bottom 5% of test-takers.
  • 15 points: Bottom 20%.
  • 20 points: Average score.
  • 21 points: 50th percentile.
  • 24 points: Minimum target score for NFL quarterbacks.
  • 27 points: Top 25% of test-takers.
  • 30 points or more: Demonstrates superior cognitive aptitude.
  • 35 points: Near "genius" territory.
  • 40 points: Top 1% of test-takers.
  • 50 points: Extreme rarity achieved by 1 in 30,000 test-takers.
For more scoring methods, you can observe our  CCAT Scores Guide or  ASVAB Scores Guide .

What Is a Good Score for The Wonderlic Test?

Technically there is no official pass/fail score on the Wonderlic. Rather, the score indicates your aptitude relative to your peers. Most employers set their own minimum target score as a benchmark.

So while a score of 10 may be fine for general manual labor jobs, managerial positions and careers like engineering generally look for applicants scoring above 25.

So, What Score Do You Need to Pass the Wonderlic Test?

As a rule of thumb, aim to score at least a 21 to demonstrate better-than-average abilities. Certain fields like law, medicine, and finance prefer applicants in the 30+ range. Quarterbacks and other top NFL prospects will want to score a minimum of 24 to be taken seriously.

Scoring a 40 or higher is exceptionally rare and means you are in elite territory, regardless of your chosen career.

Wonderlic Scores By Profession

As mentioned previously the relevance of a score often relates to the specific job or position an individual is applying for.

Below you’ll find common average Wonderlic scores by different professions:

For score results related to NFL players, visit the JobTestPrep NFL Wonderlic Scores page.

Lowest to Highest Wonderlic Scores

Accounting for variances, here's a general framework that breaks down worst to best wonderlic scores.

  • 10 or Less: Significantly below average cognitive abilities
  • 10-14: Limited skills; may indicate struggles with complex tasks
  • 15-19: Low average range; minimum target for less complex vocations
  • 20-26: Average wonderlic range; sufficient for most careers
  • 27-29: Above-average scores
  • 30-35: High scores indicating strong aptitude
  • 36-39: Superior scores; very high cognitive abilities
  • 40-50: Extremely rare genius-level top Wonderlic scores.

With a scaled score range of 0-50 and mere minutes to complete 50 questions, Wonderlic scores must be interpreted relative to factors like intended career field and elite benchmarks. While there is no official pass score, meeting the minimum target for your vocation is key. Know your target score, practice under timed conditions, and implement proven test strategies to give yourself the best shot at showcasing your true abilities when it counts the most.

Wonderlic Score to IQ

People often ask if Wonderlic test scores if Wonderlic test scores are similar to those from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV), a common IQ test used by psychologists. The key point here is that the Wonderlic test isn't the same as an IQ test. However, there are ways to estimate an IQ score from a Wonderlic score. One method is to take the Wonderlic score and multiply it by 5 to get a rough IQ score so if for example an above-average IQ score is 110 and above in Wonderlic it is 22 and above .

But remember, such direct conversion methods aren't perfect, and experts don't always agree on them. The two tests look at different kinds of thinking skills. The Wonderlic test checks things like verbal, numerical, and spatial skills, and how quickly and well you can think. An IQ test looks at a wider range of thinking skills. So, while there are ways to compare scores, it's best to look at each test on its own.

Insider Tips for Achieving Your Best Possible Wonderlic Score

Scoring well on the Wonderlic requires speed, accuracy, and strong critical thinking skills. Follow these expert tips to get your best score:

  • Practice tests under timed conditions to master pace and improve your solving ability, you can start with some wonderlic practice questions .
  • Review wrong answers to identify weak areas.
  • Learn proven test-taking strategies.
  • Arrive well-rested and focused.
  • Carefully read each question before answering.
  • Skip tricky questions and return later if needed.
  • Use quick elimination strategies to narrow choices.
  • Make educated guesses rather than leave them blank.
  • With some diligent preparation using expert guidance and test techniques, it is very possible to significantly boost your Wonderlic score.

What is Wonderlic Assessment Test (WonScore)

Types of wonderlic tests.

While there have been multiple versions of the Wonderlic test, the most recent version is the Wonscore test, which uses a cognitive ability, personality & motivation test to provide a single score that represents the candidate’s overall fit to the job position based on their cognitive ability, motivational drivers and personality as it pertains to the demands of the job. As with previous versions, the Wonderlic cognitive ability test administers 50 questions within 12 minutes. Due to the restrictive time limit, only around two percent of test-takers complete all 50 Wonderlic test questions. Let’s look at some more types of the Wonderlic assessment:

1: Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test (Formerly Wonderlic Personnel Test-Revised WPT-R or QuickTest WPT-Q)

The Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test, more commonly referred to as the Wonderlic Personnel Test, is the flagship assessment tool offered by Wonderlic. It is widely used by employers and educational institutions to measure the cognitive aptitude of prospective employees and students so that they can select the ablest candidates.

There are two forms of the Wonderlic cognitive test: the standard version, which consists of 50 questions, administered in 12 minutes. This is the most widely-used version of the Wonderlic assessment. It is usually administered in a proctored environment early on in the candidate’s application process so that only suitable candidates progress to more advanced stages of the application process.

However, some employers will opt to use the QuickTest, which uses 30 questions administered in just 8 minutes. This QuickTest is usually administered remotely in an un-proctored environment as a precursor to the full test, in order to reduce the candidate pool prior to assigning the resources to host a proctored exam. Both versions of the test are identical in content, so our practice tests and Rapid Wonderlic Mastery course are appropriate and accurate irrespective of which version you’re taking.

Other versions of the Wonderlic cognitive test are:

The Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam (SLE)

The SLE is used by various universities and colleges as a type of standardized entrance exam. test-takers are given 50 multiple choice questions and a time limit of 12 minutes. The exam assessed a candidate’s reading comprehension, formal logic skills, numerical reasoning ability, and data interpretation skills. There is a shortened version of this test called the Wonderlic SLE Quicktest. In this version, there are 30 questions and an 8 minutes time limit. This test can be completed online.

The SLE consists of the following sections:

  • General Facts & Quick Recognition (20% of the exam)
  • Logic (20% of the exam)
  • English Knowledge (40% of the exam)
  • Word Problems (20% of the exam)

The Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST)

The wonderlic perceptual ability test.

This test was first called the Hay Aptitude Test battery. This Wonderlic test type tends to be used by companies for entry-level accounting, data entry, bookkeeping, and teller jobs.

  • The four-minute number series completion test
  • The four-minute number perception test
  • The four-minute name finding test

Sometimes the Perceptual Ability test is used together with the WBST or cognitive ability test.

2: Wonderlic Personal Characteristics Inventory

The Wonderlic Personal Characteristics Inventory measures whether a candidate possesses personality characteristics that are considered to be most predictive of expected job performance. This test is administered in order to select employees whose traits are suitable for a specific job role; different jobs require different personalities, so it is highly important to hire individuals who possess the proper traits to fit the demands of a job. For example, while agreeableness may be a highly-valued trait in an HR setting, it may be a detriment in a management position where one absolutely cannot be a people-pleaser. In addition, selecting candidates whose personalities line up with the demands of the job will greatly reduce employee turnover on account of increased job satisfaction.

The test contains two sections:

Wonderlic Five-Factor Personality Profile

This section of the Wonderlic assessment is based on the standard Five-Factor model, and tests individuals on five key dimensions of their personality:

  • Extraversion
  • Agreeableness
  • Conscientiousness
  • Neuroticism
  • Openness to experience

Wonderlic Seven-Factor Personality Profile

This version of the Wonderlic Personal Characteristics Inventory deals with interpersonal traits of the candidate as they pertain to the workplace. The traits measured in this test are:

  • Exaggeration
  • Assertiveness
  • Need for recognition
  • Sensitivity
  • Emotional intensity

3: Wonderlic Motivation Potential Assessment

The Wonderlic Motivation Potential Assessment deals with the candidate’s motivational drivers. Essentially, this measures whether a candidate’s preferences are met by the job role in order to ascertain their potential job satisfaction and subsequent performance. This section of the Wonderlic assessment revolves around the core concept of ‘Seven Motivational DRIVERS’, which measures the candidate on seven key factors and provides a score conveying the candidate’s motivational fit to the job. The ‘Seven Motivational DRIVERS’ are as follows:

  • Doer: This driver is concerned with the candidate’s ability to achieve exceptional results. Candidates who score well in this area actively seek to improve the quality and effectiveness of their work.
  • Reward: This driver deals with the candidate’s belief in performance-based rewards. Candidates who score well in this area believe that they will receive proportionate compensation for the work they put in.
  • Inspired: This driver measures the candidate’s receptiveness to being positively influenced and developing skills. Candidates who score well in this area find satisfaction in the work they do and the fulfillment of their goals.
  • Values: This driver deals with the candidate’s ability to align their actions with the vision and values of the organization. Candidates who score well in this area tend to share values with the organization they work for.
  • Enjoyment: This driver measures the pleasure and sense of pride a candidate derives from performing work activities. Candidates who score well in this area typically speak highly of their job when discussing it with others.
  • Relationships: This driver deals with the candidate’s ability to connect with others at work. Candidates who score well in this area often form strong positive relationships with their coworkers and supervisors.
  • Stay: This driver measures the candidate’s tendency towards long tenure with their organization. Candidates who score well in this area usually want to keep working with the organization for a long time.

This assessment takes 10-15 minutes on average and consists of 58 questions. By measuring a candidate’s interests across these seven drivers, organizations can gain an understanding of exactly how well prospective employees will be motivated by the actual responsibilities of the job in order to improve job satisfaction, performance, and employee turnover.

Q1: Can I bring a calculator to my Wonderlic cognitive test?

Candidates are not allowed to bring a calculator to their Wonderlic assessment. This is why it’s vital to prepare thoroughly in advance in order to learn the question types and quick mental tricks to solve them in the short timeframe allowed by the exam.

Q2: What is a good score on the Wonderlic test?

Your Wonderlic test score will be calculated according to the number of questions you answer correctly, within the given time frame. A good sore will vary from employer to employer. Each college admission panel will also have its score requirements. Nevertheless, the Wonderlic company notes that the average test-takers score is 21. Certain jobs like working in a warehouse may only demand 15, while some jobs like data analysis could need a score of around 30. Your potential employer will obtain your score report and a label, according to the benchmark set for the job. For example, if the benchmark is set at 30, a score of 32 would be labeled ‘pursue’ A lower score could be labeled ‘cautionary’, while a much poorer score would typically be labeled ‘not recommended’. If you do not do well in Wonderlic you will likely be given a ‘not recommended’ label and will not be able to move on to the next stage of the recruitment process.

As we discussed earlier, the length and time limit of the Wonderlic test leads to only two percent of test-takers completing all 50 questions of the Wonderlic cognitive test. This strict time limit is intended to apply intense pressure to candidates and filtrate those who can perform under pressure from those who cannot. Unfortunately, this leads to many deserving candidates never progressing to stages of the application process where they can truly showcase that they are the perfect candidate for the job.

This is why we’ve created the Rapid Wonderlic Mastery Course . This course takes a deep dive into every section of the Wonderlic test in a modular format to prepare you for your career-changing exam in the most comprehensive way possible. The modules in our course cover every single section of the Wonderlic cognitive test, and the course comes with prep material for the Wonderlic personality and motivation tests.

Mild

It’s good for IQ assessment.

Finding Nemo

I would love to actually look at my test afterwards… Also, is 12 minutes the going timeframe for every one of these? I scored a 27…but only got to question 28. So I missed 1…

Too many variables to use a test like this to determine a persons worth in any environment. My brother is Book Smart, but would burn your house down if you let him cook for you.

I just saying everyone. Don’t weigh the entirety of your existence, against a test.

George

I scored an 18 , (luckily was only doing it for fun)but on my phone I didn’t realize the clock had started until about 30 seconds went by. I also guesstimated a few because I knew I was up against the clock and I was only at question 29 I think.

Fahad Raza

Thank you! My son has to take this test for school. BUT I went to nursing school with a chick that was already a corporate accountant for Kohls. She was the smartest one and got the best grades. But once we graduated, she couldn’t apply her book knowledge clinically. I have been an RN now for 13 years, working in many different areas of nursing, and I do horrible on this test. So does my son. Sooooooo, I’m sorry whats it looking for again. IQ? Lol okkay.

Tyson C Madding

The test is not really important at all …by putting a time limit on it it makes you take the test in the way they want you to …..my brain does not work that way but that by no means makes me less then anyone else

Kevin Mundstock

“I completed the 100m dash in a minute. My legs don’t work like Usain Bolt’s, but I’m just as good a runner as he is because time doesn’t matter!” Do you think that statement is ridiculous? Then yours is as well.

Good Analogy, Kevin!

That is a really good analogy! But do understand that we most likely did this for fun, and not an Olympic medal that we’ve been training for years.

bill miller

Kevin, these so-called IQ test do not accurately measure one’s IQ. Every real life situation is not timed. These test are good to determine how a person is able to process information quickly, and in a timely manner.

Ryan Randolph

I say that’s a poor analogy. Usain Bolt is good at sprinting, but he can’t run distances. He doesn’t have the stamina. This test tests for sprinting ability, and then pretends it’s testing your ability to run in general.

I haven’t run into a question I can’t answer given enough time to figure it out, but I don’t get the time to figure it out. Does this mean I’m stupid? Well, I was given an IQ test as a kid, and I scored quite a bit above average.

Such is life.

Adebulu Johnson

Taking the test was fun, but came with very limited timing. More time would have greatly benefit my score….

KERRIONE KEYAH

I answered 23 and scores a 14 luckily just fun

CZar

That is part of the challenge. They want to see what you do in stressful situations and how you prioritize. Do you stall when you don’t know an answer, or do you keep going?

V

That’s the point of the test. The Quick you are able to answer, the quicker your brain works

james

jhvhfgv

I have to disagree.

My first score: 16 second: 25 third:40

Nitish

Don’t worry! Most people are disappointed with their score the first time they take the Wonderlic. If you study and keep practicing, you’ll do great!

Bruce Fairman

Wow! 18 out of 28 for a 65 yo former National Merit Scholar. I’m also a voracious reader of non fiction so I think I need to add some sort of brain workout to my things to do list. Publix does not require Wonderlic for new baggers so my employment chances remain higher than my IQ!

Midline

The time limit is too fast I couldn’t even answer all the question cause of the time

Masha

This is absurd there is no way to read understand and solve in 12 min 50 questions.

Tiredofthiskrap

14 seconds per answer will be some kind of genius, phd, nobel winner, who knows… the point is, he wont be looking for a job in the first place. By the other hand, you could be Mother Teresa and remember nothing about accounting or percentages. I believe this kind of tests could it be for some technical or engineer kind of job. Not for arts, human related, designs, or similar. But the point is that this tests are a completely waste of time. Preparing for something is being who you are NOT. Which means that in a week, you forget everything. Similar for those who ‘prepare’ interviews in hand, like an acting speech. And always remember, M.Atta studied architecture in Cairo and continued his studies in Germany, surely could perform a 90% in this tests. Yet, he would it kill himself aged 33 plus 91 more in the plane. So… being prepare is not the same that being who you really are. Einstein hated math and even discussed it finding other meanings, probably wouldn’t have done this test, he considered time (and space) with another value… yet he would developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics, anyways. Once again: WT=WonderlicTest=WasteofTime.

Nick

I completed mines got a 30 with a minute left smh

Lila Mozafar

can you take mine please

mrk124

While you may be correct on the validity of the test, you are wrong about Einstein. He rather enjoyed math, it was school he hated.

Katrina Lynn shears

I wasn’t ready but I did it. I didn’t do that good I only got 13 right.

Lil homie

You did bad on the test didn’t you

Mike Hanns

You did “badly” on the test

Big Dawg

It is actually very easy if you practice and focus

Ilikeboobs

I just took the test for the first time ever and got 42 on it, while completing it in under 12 minutes.

I haven’t been in school or done any tests in over a decade, I don’t think it is that absurd – it even says ‘most people can’t finish the entire test’, finishing the test is above average not expected.

I really didn’t like the questions about the months though 🙁 We don’t really have seasons where I live in the desert I have no clue if september is closer to daylight hours of august or october xD

Great job, “Ilikeboobs”!

Rob

This test is dumb I have policeprep life time write my wonderlic there and get 75% + I come to this one and I’m getting 0%? Doesn’t make sense.

Thomas

I got 32 correct, and I’m a high school math teacher. I skipped the ones that were going to take too long to figure out. If I had more time, I would have gone back and guessed at them. Can I try again?

Thank You, Thomas!

I used your advice to skip questions that involved too many equations and improved from a 19 (completing around 27 questions) on my first try, to finishing all 50 questions with a score of 37 on my second! I took one in the morning and one in the afternoon, but it looks like the question content doesn’t change, so I’m sure that score is somewhat inflated since some of the questions were still familiar. Either way, I could see my score still being in the 28-32+ range using your tactic.

Tim

I finished the test with 5 minutes to spare. It’s not that difficult.

Veneli

Ya, sure. After 15 tries? Everyone did too.

Dingus

I finished with fifteen minutes to spare. Pretty easy.

Joseph

It’s really difficult but not impossible, if you look at the NFL Combine results some people get 49’s after a week of playing football and no time to practice that week.

Robin

Yeah like one NFL players scoring 49 with Pat Mcinally a Harvard alumn getting the only 50. Another Harvard alumn is in a three player cluster at 48. Ryan Fitzpatrick being that Ivy League guy. The lowest score was a four and the lowest score by a “successful” NFL player is a six. Vince Young would be that nitwit that could QB an NFL offense. Which puts him in the zillionth percentile.

Patrick Heath

To be clear, 2 players in the history of taking the test have gotten a 49 or better. Tom Brady got a 33, Lamar Jackson a 13 – most of your top-level guys are in the 30 range. No offense to NFL players, but they got to college on athletic scholarships, not because they are academically inclined.

Bill magnu

Yes but the NFL guys take multiple practice tests prior to taking the real test at the combine. They all have high paid agents who make sure they’re prepared for every test including the wunderlic. The average person just taking it for fun probably doesn’t spend any time preparing or learning about strategies for the test. Part of what makes this test hard is that it requires a different strategy than most tests we’re used to taking.

Tony Barony

Sure there is. I finished with a couple minutes to spare and scored a 45. However, I can’t even replace the windshield wipers on my car without help. Different people have different skills.

Wanda

I been out of school 20 plus years some of these questions where hard.-

I take the test at 3 pm today.

Wonderwomen

Question 31 has a mistake. It is written with the word as but is meant to say has..

Thanks! I fixed it 🙂

I understand the test is hard, especially if you have been out of school for a while. That’s why I go through everything step-by-step in my online course. I want to make sure everyone gets a really good review of the material and make the questions easy for anyone, even if you’ve been out of school for several years!

Adrian Martinez

I take the test tomorrow and I have been out of school for 25 years, I am going back to college to become a therapist as my wife enjoys her career in the same field! I am so nervous that I really need help and want to pass this test!!

Hi Adrian! Congrats on your new career venture! Have you seen my online course? I walk through everything step-by-step so it makes the test quite easy even if you have been out of school for years! You can find more about it here: https://beatthewonderlic.com/shop/the-wonderlic-personnel-test-online-course/

can I check my score

Hi Walter! You can view your score by clicking through to the end and hitting “submit”.

richard fuentes

Harder than I thought.

Anthony Johnson

This was a difficult test

Pierre

A little harder than I thought. Good questions for a possible hire

Sherice Romero

Good test for possible hire

Where are my results

Nellly Arellano

I have taken the real wondelick and finished all 50 questions but do not know ow what score I got . I took this one to get an idea of what I scored on the first one . I’m this test is harder that the real one ….I did not finish all 50 in time .Seems there are more math questions on the practice test and harder ones ….on the real test there were more spatial reception questions (fold the box in your head type)

Nelly

where to give wonderlic test ? I have to give as a requirement for my admission into nursing program. is it online based or I have to go to center to give it ?

The Wonderlic is a very common nursing school entrance exam. Most schools will have you come to the campus to take the test. If you cannot come to the school’s campus to take the exam, then your recruiter or admissions counselor will have you take it at home (online) or at a nearby testing center.

The test is usually administered online, but some schools (and businesses) still administer a paper version.

I would contact the admissions department at the school you are applying to and ask them to help set you up to take the exam.

Doniyor

Good test but my score was very low( I should practice more

Gwestbrook

Interesting

jason

I have to take the test in a few days interesting test

John Prisavage

Went so fast. But was really helpful.

marc

It’s difficult but very helpful Thank you

LILIAN

Very Helpful!!! Thank you!!!

Zubia

very tough in such a short time

Suzuki Taemura

It is pretty inaccurate. I got 21 on this test, however after completing a real one my score was above 40 (won’t say the exact one to stay humble I guess)

not sure how any of that is supposed to scream “stay humble” hahaha – I found this to be a good test and I’m NOT going to be humble by saying that I got a 49

shan

very good tool

President Obama

Agree i have. i has got 16 score bat it is ok

fran

needed more time

Deborah Thompson

I’m gonna go back to take the test over until I pass

Angel Chau

its really a wonderful test

V

hard for old brains

time pressure freezes the brains

Christy

Thanks, I have gained my confidence. I am going to take my test today. And I wish if you have Kaplan nursing entrance or Teas V.

Thanks Christy! That is awesome to hear! We are working on TEAS prep and will release it on our sister site just for nurses – https://nursehub.com . Please let me know how your test goes! We are all rooting for you 🙂

kaveh

Seemed to pass quickly but very helpful.

marjorie

the time went too fast for me

this practic was helpful ,but went too fast for me

Baybeegie Castillo

I nearly got through this test in the time but only by skipping answers that I knew I didn’t have a hope of getting quickly. There was one question that asked for 3 answers and only let me select 1 and there were a few tiny spelling mistakes here and there but thank you very much for this tool. I really need to practice!

Thanks Amy! I fixed the answer selection error you mentioned – thank you for mentioning it!

The other thing I noticed was the sentence: Carly as Canadian citizenship. Thanks Alex

Valerie Will

The time provided was too short

Dan Roche

A couple of typos (“EXTNIGUISH”?) and one of my “Correct Answers” was blank, but otherwise this was excellent and it’s the best mock Wonderlic I’m aware of online. Good approximation of the real thing. Coupla touchups and this will be perfect.

(Disclosure: Scored 41!)

Thanks Dan! I will fix those errors right away 🙂

Pedro

good exercise

Ron

Thanks for the information.

Jo Blo

Really made me think!!

David Chugg

Where and when do you receive the test score information

Hi David! You just need to click through t the last questions (even if time runs out) and click “submit” to see your score.

Turquoise Sanders

Where can I locate my score?

Hi Turquoise! If you run out of time on the exam you need to click through to the end of the test and click submit to view your score. This allows you to see all the different questions while also making sure your score is as accurate as possible.

Let me know if you need anything else!

Zach

I take the Wonderlic in an hour. I am praying that it will be like these practice exams in terms of difficulty. I worry that the real test will be significantly harder. I watched all his videos and completed all 5 mock tests over the last 2 days, high score of 36/50. If the real test is anything like this, I’m good. Will post an update.

You’ve got this Zach!!!;)

Ok quick update. I got a 30 on the actual test. Not completely satisfied, but on 2 days notice I’ll take it. Alex’s videos, tips, and tricks are very useful. The mock exams are also very helpful. I will say that the real exam is harder! Was not multiple choice, every question was fill in answers so unfortunately I wasn’t able to guess when time was short. For anything quantitative be prepared for fractions and mixed numbers. EX: train travels 20 1/4 feet per 15 mins…how many in 1 2/3 hours. In 14 seconds, that’s a hard question! Almost every math related question I had was like this. Other than that, his tests are very similar to the real thing and should prepare you well. Good luck!!

Thanks for the update Zach! I will add in some fill in the blank questions to the course.

Clinton Pelletier

19 out of 31 answered. Not bad I hope for a 44 year old who hasn’t taken a rest in quite a while. Could have used my time more efficiently

Joe Fred

I guess Zach didn’t quite make it. Seriously, just skip the math at first unless you immediately see the answer. The other stuff takes a few seconds to do and that is 66% of the test.

Sana

Now to study thanks!

Yasue

Not enough time!

Dartina Cathion

I would like to retake this test, and study some of the thinks that are on this test.

Courtney OShea

Helped a lot, how come submit isn’t working?

Hi Courtney! Submit button should be working ok now. Is it still giving you any trouble? You can reach me directly at [email protected] if you are still experiencing any issues!

Jim Mitchell

I HAVE TO TAKE THIS TEST ON WEDNESDAY. I AM GOING TO TSKE THIS OVER AND OVER BEFORE THEN TO MAKE SURE I HAVE MY BRAIN IN FULL TEST MODE! 48 YEARS YOUNG AND STARTING A NEW VENTURE WITH A BIG COMPANY. THIS TEST WILL DETERMINE WHERE I START IN THE LADDER WITH THE COMPANY AND PAY GRADE.

Old post I see, but is that really true? that seems preposterous! I appreciate this test but it seems like it’s for entertainment primarily. I can’t fathom a company using ANY test to determine your position and what to pay you.

13/22 the first time I took it. 39/48 the second time. It excercises your brain for sure!!

Kim

Hopefully I can practice more

Mary

This is awesome!!

Thanks Mary!! Best of luck on your upcoming Wonderlic test! You’ve got this 😉

Tia Tomberlin

What was my test score. I know I didn’t finish. Just took it.

Sorry for the confusion. You can see your score by clicking through to the end of the exam and hitting the “submit” button.

Anyla Charles

It was cool

Do Huan

Great to ask the brand more speed

jay

Very good questions but very limited time. why is the time so limited?

Aunna

Hello I am trying to take this exam for entrance for school for a dental hygiene program, I took it last year and was one point away all three times that i took it so I was really disappointed. This year I have another chance to apply and retake this exam but I am terrified of the same thing happening again. How different are wonderlic exams for entrance to schools or job acceptence etc.. I just want to make sure I study the right things and will this prep test help me.

Hi Aunna! The Wonderlic SLE and Wonderlic Personnel Test are extremely similar, so our course will absolutely help prepare you. Our customers typically see a 10 point increase in their scores, so you’ll be right there!

Thanks Alex I will try it for sure!! Will let you know how it went!

Kelcy

Is this practice test the same as the real test or the questions change?

Hi Kelcy! The questions will change but will look very similar to what is here.

Manjeet Singh

In this practice test. it look you are going through real test.

joe buechler

havent taken the test yet

Kartik

Nice and difficult

Allison

took the wonderlic before an interview at a CPA firm. got the job! insider intel (HR director) told me that i scored a 44, highest score in company history by 6 points! i start in january 🙂

Awesome, Allison! Wooohoooo!!!! Congrats!

Kash

Tricky questions!

Tom

I believe that at least one of the questions did not have a correct answer.

Hi David! Thanks for letting us know. Which question do you believe was incorrect?

Thanks so much,

Judy

After 36 years with the same company, I find myself looking for a different job. This will help prepare for any pre-employment testing

maria

Very Useful

shafqat farooq

I performed really bad. Need to improve

The test was hard

Will

Was not prepared for the test and it reflected in my test score

nyc89

How this compare in difficulty to the Wonderlic given as part of the Mensa admission test? I scored 46 on this without any prep and was wondering if Mensa version is more difficult than the version given by employers.

That is a great score! The MENSA Wonderlic is the same as what they provide employers, so you should be confident.

Nasrin

Hi Alexander, it’s very difficult for me, i’m trying to go school after 23 years. everything is hard what is i’m doing. And i can’t see my score.

Thank you for your message. Lots of folks are in the same position you are in having to take a Wonderlic test after being out of school for so long. That is why we made our online course so simple and straightforward, yet thorough. We cover everything on the exam in detail, step-by-step so nobody feels left behind even if they have been out of school for a long time.

Your score should be at the end of the exam. Have you seen the last page of the exam yet?

Bridgett H

Getting better and better.

hope

It been a long while since I have been in school with questions like this on a timer. So I found this a bit difficult. I am frustrated with my score.

Hi Hope! Don’t be frustrated – most people who come to our site are in the exact same position you are in. That is why we made sure our course addressed everything step-by-step so that nobody feels left behind even if they have been out of school for years.

You’ve got this 😉

Vijayalakshmi Yeleswarapu

This is a wonderful test I would like to take it again the full test

Bryan

that was fast – Wish i had a little more time for the math portions. I am happy with the score of 38 after being out of school for 20 years

Kim Perry

This test is a lot harder then it looks and is very tricky I hope I do better on the actually test

shenequa staley

hi! im not sure about my score…it was an 8?

Hi Shenequa! Yes, an 8 means that you got 8 questions correct. Your score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly out of the 50. A 50 is a perfect score.

Simidren

I’m a graduate student in physics and totally bombed this test. I guess memorizing solutions to problems in Griffiths doesn’t mean you’re smart.

Nameless hero

You are predetermined to fail this test, simply because you have only 14 seconds per question, which is barely even enough to read the question properly let alone come up with an answer!

Angela

very difficult

Dorothy C Godek

Harder than I thought it would be

Ganesh Ganagsingh

Test is cake

Rakesh Ahuja

Well that was depressing.

B

21..definitely harder with being out of school for so long.

Took again, 1st time only answered 30 or so, 21/30. 2nd time, similar questions but answered all 50. 29/50. Went from 50% likelihood to 70%. Better but memorization helped.

Tiffany

Not too shabby

squirrel

so I randomly guessed many questions and my score went from a Janitor 14 to 17. wow what an unreliable test.

Geoff

46/50 first try, exactly 12 mins.

Elaine

It would be INTERESTING to see not only the final score, but also how many questions left to be answered. Just curious to see the actual accuracy and possibly revise Incorrect answers with correct. Running out of time just means being slower, not dumber.

Good point! We might add that at some point soon!

Jaclyn

Was a great rapper and once had a cooking show.

Dea

When taking the actual test online, will it disable my calculator or the ability to open additional tabs?

Hi Dea! It won’t disable your calculator but you may be proctored, meaning you may need to take it in front of someone at some point in the office.

Jason

I got 43 out of 50 right… did finish the test though but guessed at two of them… I have been taking the Wonderlic prep course for the last two week and WOW does it help a lot. It’s the best thing I’ve bought in a long time with my test coming up in January. I’ve also been learning Vedic math to cut down on my calculation times learning to do math in my head and that’s helped a lot too.

AWESOME JOB!!!!!! a 43 is really, really good!

I am so glad you are enjoying my prep course! If there is anything you need at all, please don’t hesitate to let me know!

Thanks again,

Garrett

I got 46/50 and finished the official Wonderlic with 3 minutes to spare. People around me think I’m lying when I tell them how slow and dumb they are compared to me. One of my ignorant friends was convinced that he’d easily get a 40 if I got a 46. He got 24/50. I’ll never take him seriously again.

Michael Williams

Good Wonderlich scores just indicate superior processing in limited spheres. It does not guarantee or even measure good judgement, creativity or imagination. No big picture thinking is tested. Abilities in any of these and a hundred other mental skills does not make someone dumb.

firemonkey

I got 40. Last time I did any studying was in 1976 .

Dan Peters

Hi. I scored a 41. Can you please publish the answers and explanations to each question?

Will Digg

I made an 11 on it. Oh well, I was hunting a job when I found my current one.

Daniel Kaguongo

I got a score of 30 with first attempt after attempting all 50.

Great challenge.

danielle

i got a 28, i think i got to about question 35 or so. man that went by really fast. thanks for posting this practice test.

Nokano

28 out of 36. 70% chance of being hired. There’s hope!

eeee

34 means an 85% chance of a job offer. Good enough!

Charles

Apply and test for 5 jobs and you most probably get one. Good odds, right?

Amanda Locey

what web site do i go to take the real test please

Micah

This test means nothing to the daily work force. This test is more about speed, than evaluation of skill set.

brian

I have been reading all the comments and it seems like people who did very good are the once who has been practicing… to me it seems all you have been doing is memorising the answers. Which defeats the purpose. If the wonderlic identifies who you are, the true dettermination would be you first ever score. All we know is that you can memorise

Madison

Are all wonderlic tests essentially the same? Will they consist of the same questions like this one?

Steve

First time I took the test I scored a 22…the second a 37! Just reading through this website helped. I will take the course.

Darren Kloomok

I have a couple of questions. Is there a recommended strategy in taking this test; i.e., is it better to skip questions that will take more time than doing them in order. Is there a way to see which questions you answered correctly?

Thanks for the fun.

this test is amazing!

Daniel

Oh, sheesh man. That was crazy. 12 minutes passed well before I realized. I’d hope I never have to encounter this test in real life. Honestly, I was picking and guessing on the majority of the math ones, and sorta cyphered the easier ones. Only scored a 17, but, hey….i’m 56, been through a lot more than most, and haven’t had to deal with things like this!!!!

Joseph

This was fun. Stressful with the time limit as I was constantly looking at how much time was left. I answered 39 questions and got 30 correct. Not too shabby.

I wonder why the newest comments appear at the bottom…anyways, I got a 37 in high school sophomore or junior year while sleep deprived (I was dropped out at this point because I didn’t do any work and then stopped attending, though I re-enrolled and dropped multiple times before just doing the CHSPE…kind of weird). But now at 20 years old I get a 20 , though I’m quite tired now, too. Any excuse to protect my ego, huh? I will always claim I got a 37 in my mind while sleep deprived!, though in reality it was just an online test and I guess I was better at mental math back then. Let’s hope for 21 next year.

Aruni Fernando

Appreciations

Dan

I appreciate the practice and the concept. I did okay… sorta, at first attempt. The irony is that for job screening, as opposed to the real world, trying to solve problems this fast in a business setting would probably get you fired, due to the potential for errors. My personal propensity toward problem solving makes me want to slow way down and deeply contemplate. I care too much about my answers! There’s hardly time for that. This at least helps one understand the expectations of the “game.”

Antwan Johnson

What web site do i go to and take the real test…

Anon

This test is pretty useless, I scored a 27 the first time using a calculator and I graduated with highest honors at an ivy league school and got a tech job making around 150,000 out of undergrad. WHO CARES

Samson

its funny almost a game

Jimmy Vermeer

I got 30 without a calculator, not sure how many questions I got through.

Tauer

I don’t think this question has a valid answer.

10. In a 3-year period, the revenues of A Corp. (in millions) were 42, 27, and 19; and for B Corp. (in millions): 27, 42 and 16. Which graph below best contrasts the number of acquisitions each company made over this period?

Revenue and acquisitions have no intrinsic relationship, so how could knowing the revenue tell you anything about acquisitions?

Salifu Abdulai

It’s fun

hafso

hi i am student and i wan,t to teach my self so that i can be a good girl

itsuki

difficult… Could I try it again? and review my test?

Alex

45/50, but that was a brutal rush towards the end. I wonder what I got wrong.

Mohamed Barrie

time!!! or maybe it’s because am taking it for the first time wow !! i only got to answer few questions

TJG

Last academic studying – correspondence course in 1976 which I didn’t finish. Score on the practice test 44. With age related addition pumpkin person mentions =49.

cakozor

scored 33, not bad i think

Bob

This is a great resource to prep in a short amount of time. I highly recommend using this material.

Rod

It would be helpful to immediately see what you did correctly and incorrectly. There is the odd question that is not completely clear. Thanks,

Andy

just wanted to say this course has been great for me, the first time I took it I got a 23, after going through the entire course I got a 41 in less than 9 mins, every first job interview I am getting through is making me take this test prior to moving forward, for me it is absolutely worth the $50

humaira mateen

Time was short. Do not know the final score of the test

Devyn

i got a 12/50 right and only made it to question 30? (maybe)

Anon

I wonder why industry uses a test with such low repeatability. If practice truly can boost scores by 10 points (as advertised), how can you trust that you’re measuring intelligence over practice?

Md. Tangir Islam

Got 38. It seems I need more time to finish.

Adriana

This is the most stupid test I ever heard in my 35 years career in tech industry. Many people have different temper, so some absolutely smart people can be slow on motion (i.e. phlegmatic ), so they definitely won’t pass such test. As a result companies may miss some brilliant minds…

PRINCE ELVIS

I KEEP SCORING 46 WITH 5 MINUTES TO SPARE (always finish within 7 minutes), UNFORTUNATELY, I DONT KNOW WHERE AM GETTING IT WRONG, I WISH I CAN KNOW MY ERRORS…

Steve Flynn

I just took it for the first time and I got to question 19 and I got a 16, I feel stupid but I was trying to really read and interpret the questions before answering because I am sure I would do worse if I just rushed through so I am not sure about the validity of this.

Ian Barnes

There’s no way this should be used as the sole indicator of somebody’s ability to get a job. I have a degree in mechanical engineering that I literally just graduated with last year. Some of these math questions would easily take me a couple minutes MINIMUM to solve. And some of the questions honestly make no sense. Who knows the similarity in hours of sunlight between months just off the top of their head? I got a 30 my first time through and a 41 with knowledge of most of the questions. Most people couldn’t handle this test in general without a time limit, let alone giving them 14 seconds per question.

Will

I think I broke it! Haha! Mine returned an error after completing. I think I was on question 42. Felt good about maybe 35 of them. So who knows – kind of a waste of 15 minutes. Thinking of taking again but worried it will give another error. Any chance practice test is no longer working for providing a result?

Hi Will! I am so sorry that occurred for you. I think we had too many folks on the site at once and our server had a bit of trouble. We are upgrading our site so that this does not happen in the future.

2nd time was a charm but maybe not accurate because I remembered some of the answers I gave previously, saving some time. I got a 33, but then when I clicked link to inquire about training course, it didn’t work. Hmmm…

Bill Washinski

I purchased the training in 2020 and it had questions that were similar to the ones and explained how to do them. I nailed that one. I took another and it was completely different questions: The Logic Questions were nothing like what I saw: no shape patterns, 3D patterns or spatial reasoning, graphs. I don’t know if that was a different type but if its updated for 2021 – but there was little to no resemblance.

Hi Bill! I am so sorry to hear that the second test you took was so different. Did you take it online or in person? It may have been a test that is similar to the Wonderlic test but not actually by the Wonderlic company.

Jessi Waggenspack

i got a 5 but i know that could do better.

The Wonderlic Test is a cognitive ability assessment used to measure an individual’s problem-solving skills and cognitive aptitude. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 12 minutes. The test covers a variety of subjects, including math, vocabulary, and logic.

Are there different types of Wonderlic tests?

The Wonderlic Test is a cognitive ability assessment that comes in several different versions, each designed for specific purposes. Here are the most common types of Wonderlic Tests:

  • Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT): This is the standard version of the test, which consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 12 minutes. The WPT is commonly used by employers to assess job candidates’ cognitive abilities, particularly in fields that require strong problem-solving skills.
  • Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test: This version of the test is designed to measure an individual’s cognitive ability and problem-solving skills. It includes 50 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 12 minutes.
  • Wonderlic Basic Skills Test: This version of the test is designed to measure an individual’s basic skills in reading, math, and language. It includes 50 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 12 minutes.
  • Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam (SLE): This version of the test is designed to measure an individual’s cognitive abilities and academic potential. It includes 50 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 12 minutes.
  • Wonderlic Personality Test: This version of the test is designed to measure an individual’s personality traits, values, and work style. It includes 150 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within 30-45 minutes.

Each version of the Wonderlic Test is designed to measure different aspects of an individual’s cognitive abilities and work style. Employers and individuals can use these tests to gain insight into an individual’s potential job performance and identify areas for development and improvement.

Wonderlic practice test 50 questions, 12 minutes

The Wonderlic test is a cognitive ability test commonly used in the pre-employment screening process to assess a candidate’s problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The Wonderlic test is a quick assessment, with 50 questions to be answered in 12 minutes.

Updated November 18, 2023

Keira Waddell

While no test is 100% accurate in assessing a candidate’s full capabilities, the Wonderlic test gives recruiters a good insight into a candidate’s ability to perform certain roles.

Since the Wonderlic test can be what stands between you and your dream job, you need to prepare to perform as best as you can.

This article will explain what the Wonderlic test is, what the format is, provide Wonderlic sample questions and present tips on how to prepare for your Wonderlic test .

Take a Test

The Wonderlic test (fomerly the Wonderlic Personnel Test) was developed by Wonderlic Inc., and is designed to determine your basic IQ.

The original Wonderlic test is one of the oldest-standing IQ tests out there.

Its producers have said the test measures ‘general mental ability'.

Therefore, it assesses a wide range of skills such as understanding language and word problems, determining abstract patterns and using logic to determine facts.

Many employers use the Wonderlic test to help them find the best candidate for the job advertised.

It saves them time and ensures they only progress those who possess the necessary skills for the job they applied for.

The test is out of a possible 50 points, and the pass mark is determined by the skill level required to perform a specific job.

For example, an engineer requires a score of 29, while someone working in a warehouse requires a score of 15.

You’ll often be asked to do this test in the recruitment process before the interview stage.

Employers don’t want to waste their time interviewing people who don’t have the necessary skills for the job.

For employers, the test aims to whittle down the candidates. However, it is also helpful for candidates to not waste their time on an interview they’re not suited for.

Wonderlic tests are often administered for graduate entry-level roles, but they may be required for lower or higher-level jobs, especially if there are many candidates.

In addition to the cognitive ability test , Wonderlic also offers Wonderlic personality tests, a Wonderlic math test and motivation assessments.

The Wonderlic test has four main categories:

  • Vocabulary and verbal reasoning
  • Problem-solving
  • General knowledge
  • Word problems

There are different types of questions for each of the four categories, so you must make yourself aware of these before doing the test.

It’s important to remember that the Wonderlic test does not assess your knowledge on any topic, so don’t feel intimidated if you’re early in your career.

The test measures your aptitude and abilities in a certain job role.

You should also note that practice is the best way to get a good score on the Wonderlic test .

While the actual questions will change for each test, the style of questions and the general skills they’re assessing do not change, so you can be prepared for the test by answering Wonderlic practice questions.

The Wonderlic test usually consists of 50 questions, or 30 questions if you’ve been asked to complete the quick test, which has 30 questions.

The biggest challenge to the Wonderlic test is the timing. You only have 12 minutes to complete the 50 questions , or eight minutes to complete the 30-question quick test.

Only 2% of people who take the test can complete the whole test, so don’t panic too much if you’re unable to finish it all.

The test may be administered online at the start of the recruitment process, or you may be invited to an assessment center to take the test.

However, it will almost always be taken before you progress to the interview stage.

Once you’ve been notified that you’ll need to do the test, you can start your Wonderlic test prep .

The best way to prepare is by getting familiar with the questions and practicing the skills it will assess.

Here’s what each category of the test is assessing:

  • Vocabulary and verbal reasoning – Measures your language ability and assesses how you read and interpret different words
  • Problem-solving – Assesses your ability to solve numerical and word-based problems. Identifies how well you approach problems in a timed setting
  • General knowledge – Measures your level of general knowledge and ability to use that knowledge to answer problems
  • Word problems – Assesses your ability to understand the problem presented and use logic to come to an answer

You’re not permitted to use a calculator during the test, but you can use a pen and paper.

This can be helpful to write down maths equations or help identify and choose the next sequence in a pattern if you’re more visual.

However, keep the time limit in mind, as you won’t have time to write down everything.

Practicing your mental arithmetic will help you quickly answer the Wonderlic test questions.

Try to answer these questions without a calculator. You’ll improve the more you practice.

How Is the Wonderlic Test Scored?

Your score for the Wonderlic test will be given in points out of 50. All questions in the test carry equal weight.

For the 50-question test, each question is given 1 point. For the 30-question quick test, each question is given 1.66 points.

Since each role will have a certain pass mark, there is no general pass mark for the Wonderlic test .

The producers have said that the average score on the test is 20, which is the necessary mark for a receptionist or clerical worker.

The employer can request a tailor-made test suitable for the position and accurately represents that candidate’s ability to perform the specific role.

When you’re doing your Wonderlic test prep , you’ll immediately see your practice test results.

However, whether you see your results for the actual test will be down to the employer.

Many employers won’t disclose the test results and will use them to progress candidates that performed well.

You may be able to get your test results if you request them from the employer.

If you don’t achieve the desired score on the Wonderlic test , it’s unlikely you’ll be able to retake the test for that role.

If you’re only a couple of points out, you may still be considered for the job, but it depends on your other experience and the scores of the other talents.

Take Paid For or Free Wonderlic Practice Tests

Practice is the best way to prepare for the Wonderlic test . Each test will contain different questions, but the format and the skills being assessed will be the same each time.

So, the more you practice, the better prepared you’ll be. You can find free Wonderlic test prep resources online, as well as a Wonderlic practice test at JobTestPrep .

Prepare for the Wonderlic Test

Understand the Question Format

Make sure you take time to get familiar with the question format. All questions are multiple-choice, and you’ll be timed throughout the test.

The questions won’t be given in order of the category; they’ll be mixed.

Practice Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Don’t get too comfortable if you feel you’re performing better in a certain part of the test.

Make sure you’re still preparing for the sections of the test you find easy.

The more preparation you do, the more comfortable you’ll be on the day.

Similarly, don’t ignore parts of the test you find difficult.

Everything will improve with practice, so make sure you devote preparation time to the part of the test you need to improve on the most.

Test Yourself Against the Clock

Timing is the trickiest part of the Wonderlic Test . If you’re not used to working under time pressure, then you need to practice under timed conditions to perform well on the day.

Get Enough Sleep Before the Test

You’ll hear this tip repeatedly, but it is always worth repeating. You’re unlikely to perform well when you’re sleep-deprived.

You’ll struggle to focus and will be slower in your thinking. Make sure you’re well-rested the night before the test.

If needed, take the evening to relax so you can get a good sleep.

Step 1 . Arrive Early and Collect Your Thoughts Before the Test

If you’ve been asked to sit the Wonderlic test in person, you don’t want to arrive at the test feeling stressed out if you have rushed to get there.

You’ll feel more relaxed if you turn up early and have time to collect your thoughts and calm down.

Step 2 . Don’t Get Stuck on a Single Question

With the Wonderlic test , you can skip questions you’re unsure about and return to them later.

The only problem is that you may not be able to return to it due to the time limit.

It’s best that you don’t spend too much time on one question and focus on getting points for the questions you can answer well.

Step 3 . Keep Track of the Time

Don’t get too hung up on time since it’ll distract you from the questions. But you should be mindful of the time.

For example, for every 10 questions, it’s good to glance at the time and ensure you’re on track.

Step 4 . Read Questions Carefully

Make sure you have thoroughly read and understood the question before choosing an answer.

The questions in the Wonderlic test are not designed to catch you out, but if you read them quickly, you may miss a vital part of the question.

If you’re a slow reader, make sure you practice reading questions in your preparation. Over time, you’ll improve your reading speed.

Step 5 . Guess if You Don’t Know

One of the great things about the Wonderlic test is that you’re not marked down if you answer incorrectly. So, you’re always better to take an educated guess than leave a question blank.

Step 6 . Practice the Process of Elimination

The process of elimination is a useful technique to use in every test.

Here’s an example: If you have a question like 23 x 17, you can quickly work out 3 x 7: 21. You can eliminate any answer that doesn’t end in 1.

If there are a couple of choices, take an educated guess by working out which would be too small or too high to be the correct answer.

This will be much faster than writing out the whole equation.

Wonderlic Test

What is the wonderlic test.

Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test was formerly called the Wonderlic Personnel Test. It is a quite popular pre-employment tool used to assess the cognitive and problem-solving abilities of prospective employees. Candidates can do this assessment in twelve different languages. Recruiters use Wonderlic in the recruitment of entry-level and managerial staff.

Eldon F. Wonderlic developed the Wonderlic test, and he named it after himself. Eldon developed this assessment tool while he was a graduate student at Northwestern University in 1936. Wonderlic test is a 50 questions multiple-choice examination. Applicants have 12 minutes to complete the test. Each question in the test is worth 1 point. The average score among test takers is 21.

What does the Wonderlic Test measure?

Wonderlic test was divided into three to measure prospective employees' cognitive ability, motivation, and personality. It measures the candidate's ability to solve problems, understand instructions, adapt, deal with mental rigors of the job, and learn new things.

  • Cognitive ability: this test assess the ease of learning and problem-solving skill of the prospective employees. The cognitive ability test has two parts. They are the Wonderlic Personnel Test and a Quick test. The Quick Test is a set of 30 questions to be answered in 8 minutes, while the Personnel Test is a collection of 50 items to be answered within 12 minutes. Wonderlic SLE is a scholastic version of the Wonderlic Personnel Test used in the assessment of medical personnel.
  • Motivation: motivation is measured using a fifty-eight item assessment tool. This assessment tool is based on the workplace motivation model for employees, Holland/RIASEC. This tool assesses a prospective employee's interests and motivation for the job applied. The more motivation and interest a prospective employee has for a job, the higher the chances of succeeding in that role.
  • Personality: the Wonderlic personality test assesses the personal character of the job applicants. It compares the candidate's character to that needed to succeed on the job. The characters are considered as a predictor of expected job performance. The Wonderlic personality test has two sections. They are the Wonderlic Five-Factor and the Seven-Factor personality profile. The five-factor assess candidates' emotional stability, willingness to learning, extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeability. The Wonderlic seven-factor personality profile assesses Exaggeration, assertiveness, trust, need for recognition, sensitivity, emotional intensity, and intuition.

How to practice for the Wonderlic assessment

  • Take timed tests: Wonderlic gives you 12 minutes to answer 50 questions. You have 14 seconds to answer each question. It would be best if you timed yourself while answering practice questions to prepare you for test conditions.

  • Track your progress: keep track of the improvements you are making. Congratulate yourself when you see a marked improvement in your test score.
  • Learn to calculate without a calculator: you will not be allowed a calculator in this test. Learn how to calculate using a rough sheet of paper and a pencil.

Welcome to pima medical’s wonderlic assessment preparation guide.

What is the Wonderlic Assessment?

Wonderlic Scores Explained

Need help understanding your Wonderlic score? Find all the helpful information you need here, including how the test is scored and what your score means.

wonderlic problem solving test

How is the Wonderlic Scored?

There are two versions of the Wonderlic Personnel Test: the WPT-R, which has 50 questions, each worth one point, and the WPT-Q, which is a shortened version that has only 30 questions that are each worth 1.66 points. This means that the maximum score on each is 50 points.

Your score is determined purely by the number of questions you get right. You will not lose points for guessing incorrectly. So if you got 25 out of 50 right on the WPT-R, your score would be a 25. If you got 15 out of 30 right on the WPT-Q, your score would also be a 25.

The average score on the Wonderlic is 20. Different positions will require higher scores. For example, a technician may require a score of 26, while a systems analyst would require a score of 32.

The Wonderlic also utilizes Item Response theory (IRT), which means that the difficulty of each question you see is based on whether or not you answer a question correctly. So if you answer a question correctly, the next question will be more difficult than if you had answered incorrectly.

my wonderlic test's score report

The Wonderlic Score Report

Your score report is broken down into a few parts:

  • First, you’d see your raw score , which is simply based on the number of questions you answered correctly. If you answered 20 correctly out of 50, your score would be a 20, which is the average score.
  • Next to your raw score you would see your percentile score . This shows how you compare to other test-takers. If you scored a 20, your percentile would 50th, since you scored better than 50% of candidates.
  • Below your percentile score is an IQ Equivalent score . The Wonderlic is not necessarily an IQ test, but it is a measure of general intelligence, and provides an estimated IQ score for comparison.
  • There is also a prominent graph of a bell curve that shows a distribution of scores. Your score is marked with a small arrow to show where you fit. The bell curve has sections that are colored in red, yellow, and green. If you fall into the green area, you are considered a strong fit for the position. If you fall into the yellow area, you are a moderate fit, meaning you may require more training and attention from a supervisor. If you fall into the red area, you are a weak fit, meaning you will likely struggle in this position. It is also possible to land in yellow or red areas above the green range. For example, if the green, strong fit area is between 25-30, scoring a 33 will likely land you in a yellow, moderate fit range. This would suggest that may be overqualified for the position, and that you’d require additional work or responsibilities to stay challenged in this role.
  • Lastly, there is a short Score Interpretation section. This briefly breaks down how well you would fit into the position you are applying for, and gives recommendations regarding the candidate’s training potential.

Wonderlic Score FAQs

Take a look at some of these frequently asked questions below.

No, your score is only based on questions answered correctly. Each question earns you a single point (or 1.66 points on the WPT-Q). Feel free to guess if you don’t know the answer!

The average score is 20/50.

This depends on the position you are applying for. Some positions require you to score near the average of 20, while some more competitive ones will require a score over 30. Find out what is required for the position you are applying for to determine what your personal “good” score might be. In terms of percentiles, a score 20 will put you in the 50th percentile, a 26 will put you in the 80th percentile, and a 29 will put you in the 90th percentile.

Your score report is automatically sent to the employer when you complete the test. Nobody else will see it. They may share it with you, but you may need to request it from them first.

Tests

Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test

The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test, more generally referred to as just the Wonderlic Test, is an intelligence test frequently used by employers to assess a potential employee's ability to problem solve effectively. The National Football League famously uses the Wonderlic test in the scouting combine to determine the intelligence of prospective draft picks. The Wonderlic Test and its predecessors have been in use for over seventy years, and is perhaps the most widely relied upon cognitive testing tool available. In addition to assessing basic problem solving skills, the Wonderlic is also useful in determining an applicant's ability to learn on the go and to listen to and follow instructions. Unlike most Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests, the Wonderlic Test is relatively brief, lasting only twelve minutes. Consisting of fifty questions, the Wonderlic requires the test-taker to answer over four questions per minute, thereby also testing one's ability to problem solve not only effectively, but quickly and efficiently as well. So, is the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test more than just an intelligence test? In a sense, yes. The Wonderlic is designed in such a way as to give an employer notice of a person's ability to learn quickly and problem solve rapidly, rather than merely providing notice of one's overall "quotient" of intelligence. While there is a method of converting a Wonderlic score into an IQ score, this provides only a rough estimation of IQ. If an employer is seeking the IQ score of an applicant, a proper IQ test should be given rather than the problem-solving style of cognitive testing provided by the Wonderlic Test. The types of question asked by the Wonderlic Test. Some of the questions essentially ask which word in a series does not belong in the context of the other words, while other questions will appear more algebraic in nature. The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test is a useful tool for determining the cognitive ability of potential employees. Of course, it should not be considered definitive in and of itself, but rather should be viewed as one potential way to analyze and evaluate a potential employee among a variety of factors.

Wonderlic Select Results

Wonderlic Select provides a singular, numerical score for each of your job candidates. Collectively, these Overall Fit Scores enable you to quickly identify and prioritize individuals with the greatest potential for success in a given role/job.

Candidates are assessed in three key areas to help predict job success: Cognitive Ability, Motivation and Personality. Each candidate’s results for the three component assessments are optimally weighted to create a single score based on the job requirements - to help you easily rank and compare individual applicants.

For the Motivation and Personality components, results are further divided into Scale Scores, which can be viewed on each candidate's detailed results page. These in-depth reports provide insight of candidates' interests and personality traits and allow you to compare candidates on five factors of personality and the three most relevant motivators for the job.

The Overall Score and all Component Fit Scores are placed on a scale of 0 to 100, with scores of 50 and above indicating at least moderate fits for the job. These scores represent an individual test taker as compared to the typical applicant pool for the chosen job title. As such, any score above 50 represents an above-average score for that job - meaning the candidate scored higher than 50% of the applicant pool and should be considered at least a good (moderate) fit for the job. Prioritizing the top half of applicants for further consideration can help improve the candidate experience and ensures you spend your high-value resources on candidates with the greatest likelihood to succeed.

Personality Scale Scores

wonderlic problem solving test

The Overall Score is displayed on a range from 0 - 100. With Wonderlic Select, we recommend prioritizing candidates scoring 50 or above. This can reduce your candidate screening time by up to 50%, as you only need to focus on those with the greatest potential for success in a given role/job.

Overall scoring results fall into four categories: strong, moderate, cautionary, and weak. The higher the scoring range, the more likely a candidate is to be successful in a specific position. But, keep in mind that scores within the same overall scoring range demonstrate similar performance. (E.g.: Candidates with Overall score results of 78 and 93 both should be considered strong candidates for the position.) And the scores are color coded to easily identify the strongest candidates at a glance.

Here's an overview of the four Overall score categories:

Using the Overall Score

The Overall Score is designed for use at the top of the applicant funnel to help screen out your weakest candidates and identify your stronger candidates for further consideration. Once you have selected your short list of candidates, then it's appropriate to use Component Fit Scores and Scale Scores to evaluate differences between your top candidates and make decisions about which candidates to pursue.

Component Fit Scores

wonderlic problem solving test

Cognitive Interpretation Fit Scores

Cognitive ability is a key construct of the Wonderlic Select multi-measure assessment. Simply stated, cognitive ability measures what someone can do. Wonderlic's long-accepted measurement of cognitive ability provides information about candidates' ability to solve problems, learn new tasks and responsibilities, and meet job performance expectations. Like Overall score results, Component Fit scores fall into four interpretation groups.

Weak (0-24): These individuals do not meet the cognitive ability requirements of this position, meaning they are a weak fit. Individuals in this range are:

Typically unable to keep up with the problem-solving complexity of this role

Likely to have difficulty learning tasks and responsibilities associated with job

Likely to require additional training or supervision

Unlikely to meet minimum standards of job performance

Cautionary (25-49): These individuals may not meet the cognitive ability requirements of this position, meaning they are a cautionary fit. Individuals in this range are:

Likely to have difficulty with the problem-solving complexity of this role

Less likely to meet minimum standards of job performance

Moderate (50-74): These individuals likely will meet the cognitive demands for this position, meaning they are a moderate fit. Individuals in this range are likely to:

Handle the problem-solving complexity of this role

Learn the tasks and responsibilities associated with the job quickly

Spend little time training

Meet or exceed performance standards

Strong (75-100): This individual will meet or exceed the cognitive ability requirements for the position, meaning they are a strong fit. Individuals in this range are able to:

Learn tasks and responsibilities associated with the job very quickly

Spend minimal time training

Motivation Interpretation Fit Scores

Backed by over 40 years of research, Wonderlic Select employs our motivation assessment tool based on Holland's Theory of vocational interests: Enterprising, Traditional, Supportive, Practical, Investigative, and Artistic. When candidates' interests match job requirements, they are more likely to be motivated by work and have higher levels of job satisfaction, work performance, and career stability. Furthermore, because candidates tend to pursue occupations in which their interests can be expressed, you can confidently identify what "gets your candidates out of bed in the morning." Simply stated, the motivation construct measures what someone wants to do.

Overall, the motivation component assesses the degree to which candidates' interests align with the three most relevant motivators for the selected job profile.

Weak (0-24): Individuals scoring within the weak range are very unlikely to be motivated by this type of work.

Their interests and preferences do not align with the job tasks required for successful performance in this role.

They are very unlikely to have a high degree of job satisfaction.

They are highly unlikely to meet performance expectations.

They are highly unlikely to exhibit career stability in this type of work.

Cautionary (25-49): Individuals scoring within the cautionary range are unlikely to be motivated by this type of work.

Their interests and preferences mostly do not align with the job tasks required for successful performance in this role.

They are unlikely to have a high degree of job satisfaction.

They are unlikely to meet performance expectations.

They are unlikely to exhibit career stability in this type of work.

Moderate (50-74): Individuals scoring within the moderate range are likely to be motivated by this type of work.

Their interests and preferences mostly align with the type of job tasks required for successful performance in this role.

They are likely to have a high degree of job satisfaction.

They are likely to meet performance expectations.

They are likely to exhibit career stability in this type of work.

Strong (75-100): Individuals scoring within the Strong range are very likely to be motivated by this type of work.

Their interests and preferences are highly aligned with the type of job tasks required for successful performance in the role.

They are very likely to have a high degree of job satisfaction.

They are very likely to meet or exceed performance expectations.

They are very likely to exhibit stability in this type of work.
