UQ Graduate School Scholarship (UQGSS)

The UQ Graduate School Scholarship is the most common scholarship applied for when planning to undertake a Phd. Most PhD's at UQ are funded via the UQ Graduate School Scholarship. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, please visit the UQ Graduate School .

*Please note, currently the UQ Graduate School Scholarship is only available to Domestic candidates. International applicants are still elligible for Earmarked PhD projects (and accompanying Earmarked Scholarship).

IMB Global Challenges Scholarship

The Global Challenges PhD Scholarship offers a per annum top up to the UQ Graduate School Scholarship plus $5,000 support for a placement on top of the $2,000 Student Development fund (over the period of the candidature) to outstanding domestic and eligible international onshore applicants .

The PhD projects on offer will give each student the opportunity to take a deep dive into a specialised topic and research discipline in one laboratory and within our broad-ranging approach. Each project will provide the rich foundational research training gained by completing a PhD and an opportunity to make a unique contribution to the field of knowledge. By conducting these projects within a cohort of other students, also aiming to broadly address the identified themes, the collective will form an intellectual hub, together, solving these global challenges.

Importantly, the scholarship includes specialised training in each theme and cutting-edge research techniques, tailored transferable skills training and support to conduct a placement nationally or internationally with a related partner. Collectively, these will form four pillars of support for the research project and create job-ready graduates with links to the national and international research, entrepreneurial and industry community. This year's theme is 'Drugs inspired by nature' .

To qualify for a Global Challenges Scholarship, you must

Select ‘My higher degree is not collaborative’
Select 'I am applying for, or have been awarded a scholarship or sponsorship'.

Scholarship conditions

If awarded the Global Challenges Scholarship, there are a few conditions that must be met in order to receive funding. These include:

Conducting a cross-disciplinary project that is targeted at solving a global problem within one of the themes of – Drug Discovery, Chronic Disease, Superbug Solutions and Population and Disease Genomics. All projects that qualify for the Global Challenges Scholarship are marked with an asterisk.
Conducting a project that is multidisciplinary, with an advisory group that is composed of at least one Associate advisor in a different IMB Centre (or UQ institute/school) to the principal advisor
Conducting a placement with an external partner - arranged by you in collaboration with The University of Queensland Graduate School within the first 18 months of commencement, the placement can take place at any time during the candidature but is normally undertaken towards the end of the PhD. The extension of your candidature period from 3.5 years to 4 years is conditional on undertaking a placement.
Being an IMB ambassador - both to promote the scholarship and IMB generally.
Being an active participant in SIMBA and mentoring junior scholarship holders

* Please note, the scholarship duration is 3.5 years guaranteed plus 0.5 years conditional on completing training and a placement. Please know that further activities that build your cohort and enrich your PhD experience will be advised over the period of your candidature and your attendance will be required.

Earmarked Scholarships

Earmarked scholarships are offered for research projects aligned with recently awarded grants from major Australian Government research funding bodies, including the Australian Research Council, the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Medical Research Future Fund.

Earmarked scholarships offer PhD students the opportunity to contribute to large projects of national significance and work with leading researchers. The scholarship provides a living stipend of $32,192 per annum (2023 rate, indexed annually), tuition fees, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You can apply anytime - there is no closing date.

This is a stipend scholarship offered by ANU Colleges to Higher Degree by Research candidates. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis, however, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship can be awarded for part-time study for Domestic candidates only. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis.

The Melbourne Research Scholarship and Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship are offered to high-achieving international and domestic students who are enrolling in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.

have applied for and meet the requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection criteria

All domestic students who are offered admission to a Masters by Research or doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).

Graduate Research Scholarships that provide a stipend as well as fee offset are awarded to domestic and international students based on academic merit. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement of their last completed degree and their research potential in their field of study. Factors such as completion of a degree at the same level of the research course for which the scholarship is sought, relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications or composition of original music may be taken into consideration.

These scholarships are subject to the Graduate Research Scholarships Terms & Conditions (as amended).

If you are a new student and have applied for a graduate research course by the application closing date for that course, you will be automatically considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships. You will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to your record within ten business days of having submitted your course application.

If you have accepted a graduate research course offer and deferred commencement in order to be reconsidered for a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year. You will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to your record within ten business days of having submitted the online form.

If you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you seek a scholarship, you must submit an online application form by 31 October to be considered for a scholarship in the following year. You will receive a notification that a scholarship application has been added to your record within ten business days of having submitted the online form.

Domestic students will receive an offer for Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) as part of their course offer.

Offers for Graduate Research Scholarships that provide a stipend and fee offset are made separately but around the same time course offers are made.

This scholarship is available to high-achieving domestic and international students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or doctoral degree.

Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships

China Scholarship Council - University of Melbourne PhD Scholarship

This scholarship is provided by the China Scholarship Council and the University of Melbourne to promote international collaboration and is offered to citizens of the People's Republic of China wishing to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of Melbourne.

What are the benefits?

Stipend and fee offset scholarships.

Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
Living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.

How to apply for an Australia Awards scholarship

Before you apply:

Check the opening and closing dates for your country , and select your country of citizenship/residency from the list of participating countries for specific information on eligibility, priority areas and how to apply. See the participating countries page for opening and closing dates.
If you intend to apply, you must read the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook . The handbook provides information including general eligibility requirements, selection processes, entitlements and responsibilities. Note that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade may revise and update the handbook at any time without notice.
Some countries encourage and allow you to apply online while others require hard-copy applications. See your participating country profile for more information

Applying online

Refer to your relevant participating country profile for the link to the application portal. Please note that Indonesia and the Philippines do not use the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS). The link to applications for those countries can be found in their relevant Country Profile.

When you register online, you will be required to answer some questions to establish your eligibility. You will then be given a unique registration number, username and password.

You do not need to submit your application immediately. You can set up a draft application form and update it, and your supporting documentation, until the designated closing date as on the relevant participating country profile .

Once submitted, your application cannot be changed. We strongly advise applicants applying online to do so well before the closing date. OASIS experiences peak usage in the days leading up to the closing date and applicants may experience delays.

Applying by mail

If you are unable to submit your application online, you can apply by mail. Please check your participating country profile for contact details to obtain a hardcopy application form and any other templates such as referee reports (if applicable).

Completed hard copy application forms and supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline specified by your country. See the opening and closing dates for each country .

PhD and research degree scholarships can help you reach your goals. Scholarships can cover things like tuition fees, overseas student health cover, living allowances paid as stipends and relocation allowances.

Applications for Griffith scholarships, as well as Australian Government Research Training scholarships, go through a competitive and merit-based selection process.

Scholarships are awarded throughout the year and you can apply at any time.

While you can apply for scholarships at any time, it’s recommended that you apply at least four months before your preferred intake to allow sufficient time for your application to be assessed, your offer letter issued and accepted.

Australian Government Research Training Program

The Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) provides funding to Australian universities to support both domestic and international candidates undertaking a PhD or research degree program. Support provided may include tuition fee offsets, stipends and allowances.
