Introduction: The “3 Point” Parabola: Increase Shot Efficiency Using Math

The “3 Point” Parabola: Increase Shot Efficiency Using Math

Learn the way some of the greatest basketball players perfect their shot using the parabola and quadratic equation.

Step 1: Understanding Why and How the Parabola Is Used in Basketball.

Understanding Why and How the Parabola Is Used in Basketball.

In the game of basketball, it is crucial to be able to execute a throw which creates a parabola that can deliver the ball through a hoop with ease.

shooting at a 90 degree is optimal yet impractical as in order to shoot to this degree one must be directly under the rim. This is where a parabola is used to complete the objective of shooting the ball to acquire points.

Step 2: Analyzing a Free Throw

Analyzing a Free Throw

The closer to the basket, the higher possible parabola arc, which is why the preferable angle shot degree is between 45-55 degrees. We can see that at 15 feet from the basket that the player is able to achieve a 13-foot vertex by shooting at a 55-degree angle.

Step 3: The Equation

The Equation

a = slope/angle shot b = Court position c = Height/release point

Professional basketball players such as Stephen Curry maintain such a consistent shot parabola by knowing the factors in this quadratic equation. After years of repetition Curry is able to tweak these variables depending on his position on the court. His release points remain constant as he always initiates the shot in the same manner regardless of his situation while adjusting his “a” and “b” depending on his distance from the hoop.

Step 4: Conclusion

Conclusion

By following this equation and practicing almost anyone can perfect their shot abilities because to excel at any sport such as basketball, one must be able to closely interwork mathematical concepts into their craft.

Mets' Phil Bickford: Designated for assignment

The Mets designated Bickford for assignment Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Bickford will lose his spot on the Mets' 40-man roster in order to make space for J.D. Martinez, who officially signed with the team Saturday. Bickford gave up three earned runs over 4.2 innings during spring training and turned in a 4.95 ERA through 67.1 frames last season. He could receive attention on the waiver wire, but the 28-year-old reliever would almost certainly be limited to low-leverage work no matter where he ends up.

Hokies’ Henson reaches NCAA finals

Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson earned his way to the NCAA championship round, which starts at 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.

The sophomore 149-pounder became just Virginia Tech’s fourth all-time NCAA finalist by upending No. 1 seed Ridge Lovett of Nebraska 1-0 Friday night in T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. Henson’s finals appearance is just the fifth time a Hokie as made it to the championship’s finale.

Virginia Tech also secured three other All-American finishes, with Bryce Andonian at 157 pounds, Mekhi Lewis at 174 and Thomas Stewart Jr. at 184 all wrestling Saturday morning for podium placement at 11. Lewis has become Virginia Tech’s first four-time All-American.

Henson’s first period was scoreless. Henson, seeded fourth, took the neutral position to begin the second period and nearly scored on multiple attempts, but Lovett fended him off. With the score still 0-0, Lovett elected to start the third on top. Henson gained an escape point 30 seconds into the period and withstood the Cornhuskers star’s numerous takedown attempts.

Henson joined Devin Carter (141 pounds, in 2014), Jared Haught (197, 2018), and Mekhi Lewis (165, 2019; 174, 2022) as Tech’s all-time finalists and will look to become Tech’s just second national champion (Lewis, 2019).

Also for Tech, 197-pounder Andy Smith and heavyweight Hunter Catka lost in the “blood round” of 12, falling one victory short of becoming All-Americans.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Auburn’s Bruce Pearl Laments NCAA Tournament Assignment After Winning SEC Tournament

  • Author: Karl Rasmussen

In this story:

Auburn Tigers

Auburn Tigers  men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl appears to be less than thrilled by the location of his team’s opening matchup in the NCAA tournament .

The committee selected Auburn as a No. 4 seed for this year’s Big Dance, setting them up for a clash against the No. 13-seed  Yale Bulldogs . That first-round game will be held at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Wash., roughly 2,400 miles northwest of Auburn.

Auburn’s seeding and game site were revealed hours after the Tigers beat  Florida , 86–67, in the SEC tournament championship game in Nashville.

“Are we paying the price for getting Birmingham last year and having an incredible opportunity against Houston last year? Perhaps … This is the third time they’ve shipped us off a long way from our fans,” Pearl said shortly after the tournament bracket was revealed, via Justin Ferguson of The Auburn Observer .

Auburn Tigers men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl

Bruce Pearl guided Auburn to the SEC tournament championship Sunday, clinching his first NCAA tournament berth in 10 seasons with the Tigers.

Steve Roberts/USA TODAY Sports

Pearl suggested they were “paying the price” in 2024 after playing so close to home in 2023.

As for being “shipped away” for the third time, Pearl seems to be referring to the team’s tournament appearances in 2017-18 and 2018-19. In those seasons, the Tigers played first-round matchups in Viejas Arena in San Diego and Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. They’ll be back out West again this year, and Pearl made clear he’s not thrilled.
