There’s an old adage that anyone can be a father, while not everybody can be a dad. But what makes dads so special, and how do you know if you’re one of them? While there is some truth to that old saying about not everybody being dad material, the reality is that anyone can be a dad if they put the effort in. You just have to be there for your child, love them, and care for them. In this article, we’ll cover what makes dads and fathers unique, what kind qualities it takes to be a dad, and why being a dad is so beneficial.

Things You Should Know

 • Any male biological parent qualifies as a father, but a dad is the caregiver who raises a child with love, care, and attention.
 • A good dad shows emotion, listens to his child, plays with them, and demonstrates positive male behavior.
 • Research shows that engaging as a dad will improve the odds your child is happy, successful, and well-adjusted in their relationships.

What makes someone a dad vs. a father?

“Father” is a biological term, while a “Dad” is a real parent.

 • Just as an example, say a man gets a woman pregnant and runs away from his responsibility. Another man steps up and raises the child. The first guy is rightfully a father, but the second man is a dad.
 • “Father” is also a legal term. In child support and paternity cases, the “father” is whichever male contributed to the birth of the child. That doesn't necessarily make them a dad, though. [2] X Research source

Step 1 He shows his emotions

 • A cold, distant father will be too closed off to really share how they feel with their child.

Step 2 He plays

 • A guy who only sees himself as a father may have better things to do with their time than play with their child.

Step 3 He listens and engages

 • A father may view himself as merely an enforcer or disciplinarian and refuse to engage with his child on their level.

Step 4 He mentors

 • An uninvolved father will be more likely to write off their child’s challenges as a learning experience or something to be navigated alone.

Step 5 He shows his partner respect

 • On the other hand, a father may only be interested in what he has or how he’s treated, regardless of what happens to his partner or ex.

Step 6 He takes care of the household

 • It means a lot to children if they see their dad and mom (or dad and other dad) sharing the household work and treating one another as equals.

Step 1 Dads provide their children with a model of male behavior.

 • If you’re kind, present, and empathetic, your son will likely grow up to be the same and your daughter will likely seek out partners who are kind and empathic.
 • Parents also reinforce behaviors in their children. If you’re a friendly dad and you have a son, the odds that they’ll grow up to be friendly increase dramatically.

Step 2 Dads teach their children how to be in a romantic relationship.

 • Engaged dads also help raise future engaged parents, so if you ever want well-adjusted little grandchildren, put the work in now!

"dad" vs "father"

which one is more appropriate to use in a college essay? “dad” seems a bit too informal, but then “father” sounds a bit awkward. and if i use “dad”, should it be “Dad” or “dad”? lol any help would be appreciated !!

As a general rule, I’d go with ‘father’, unless it’s a very informal essay (or if your style allows it).

Don’t capitalise ‘dad’.

any. one. will. do.

…

How do you call the male person that made your birth possible? However you call it, use that word…assuming it’s a word virtually everyone in the English speaking world can understand.

Point: IT DOES NOT MATTER. It’s more important is conveying your voice in your essay.

It depends on the context and the feel of the essay in total. If the sentence is about the guy who raised you, use “father”, as in “My father is a truck driver.” If it’s about his relationship to you, or it’s a quote, you can use “dad”, as in “My dad came to all my baseball games” or " ‘Dad, when do we eat?’ ".

Remember, though, that throwing “dad” into a formal essay will sound awkward, more so than using “father” in an informal essay. Read the essay in its entirety, and you’ll see which word sounds better.

I don’t know… maybe you could use dad later on in your essay, when the ad people have somewhat warmed to your personality, that way they get more of a perception of you being a human rather than an essay writer.

Concerning capitalization, if you use dad (or father) as a name, capitalize it.

“Ask your dad if you can go.”

“Ask Dad if you can go.”

I’ve always said father, so I just write it like that.

maybe papa?

Dads are critical pillars in children’s development. Like moms, their presence, especially in children’s early years, is critical in laying the foundation of their well-being and self-esteem that will determine much of their kids’ adulthood. Some people have great relationships with their dads, while others have complicated or strained relationships, or don’t have contact with them at all.

Being a dad is different from merely being a father in that the former has nurtured a more loving relationship with their kids. Becoming a father is a huge milestone in a person’s life. The child can enjoy their dad’s great sense of humor, fun attitude in life, and loving personality. Whatever your relationship with your dad, you can write a compelling essay to convey your experiences and share your emotions.

10 Compelling Prompts On Essays About Dads

Describe the best side of your father and share with your readers how he fits as your best friend. Talk about the things you like doing together and how he listens to you in times of need. Perhaps you enjoy watching movies together or going on annual trips away together. What are the other things that make you appreciate your father? Answer this question in the main section of your essay. End your essay with a conclusion explaining how a parent and a child can have true bonds of friendship.

Essays About Dads: Spending time with dad

Do you and your dad enjoy golf, camping, or hiking? Or do you prefer doing something indoors, like cooking or playing board games? First, write about the activities you and your father enjoy doing together. Then, for a more impactful essay, write about what a day of spending time with your dad looks like and your fondest memory with him.

Like our essay example, we hope you also have important lessons to carry on from your dad, whether by having a loving or complicated relationship with him. Write down the most important lesson your dad has imparted to you. You may have learned essential life skills like cooking or cleaning, self-confidence, or how to be independent. Detail how the lessons you have learned have shaped your perspective in life and what you are striving to do to embody his teachings into your life.

Diverging from the traditional perception of fathers as mainly financial providers, the modern definition of a dad comes in different shapes and sizes. First, enumerate the typical dads existing today — single dads, gay dads, blended households, step dads, and more. Then, find out how they are raising their children and how different are their parenting styles from those of traditional dads. Include interview research in your essay for an interesting and accurate essay.

According to the National Fatherhood Initiative , one in four children is without a biological, step, or adoptive father. In this essay, enumerate the adverse effects of fatherlessness on a child’s development. How do these effects influence one’s adulthood? Find research studies to support your answer to this.

Research from the Pew Research Center has shown that single dads have increased ninefold since the 1960s. Research this trend further and discover what factors drive single men to take on the enormous responsibility of fatherhood on their own. If you know dads who are single fathers by choice, their stories would add more life to your story. Also, tackle the options men have to be single dads, such as surrogacy or adoption, and assistance your state or country offers aspiring single dads.

According to the World Population Review , about 50% of married couples divorce. When marriages fail, what rights do fathers hold to continue being a father to their children? Find out what these are, along with a father’s obligations and penalties for not fulfilling them. Turn this into an argumentative essay and answer whether these rights and obligations are enough and how they can be expanded to sustain raising a child.

As modern times drastically change the roles of parents, dads have become more involved in child-rearing. This has allowed dads to nurture more profound relationships with their kids, breaking the image of a distant father who only gets to see his child after work. First, write about the qualities and actions that make a father a responsible dad. Then, add the importance of having responsible dads at home and what society can do to promote responsible fatherhood.

Essays About Dads: My dad the disciplinarian

The image of dads as a disciplinarian has often been perceived negatively. But beyond the punishments, discipline means enabling children to grow up well. In this essay, talk about your dad’s disciplinary techniques. Write about how he corrects bad behavior. Then, cite anecdotes to make your essay more lively. For example, share how your dad responded to a grave mistake you committed. Finally, write down how he punished you and what you learned from this experience.

Interview your father and try to capture his roller coaster of emotions and experiences as a first-time dad. Ask him what he felt like when he first held you in your arms, when you got your first fever and when he first brought you to school. Next, ask him how he is coping with the extraordinary demands of fatherhood financially, physically, and emotionally. Finally, ask him to give soon-to-be fathers a few words of wisdom. Share these experiences in your essay and describe your take on these emotions.

Essay on Dad/ Father

The figure of a father in one’s life holds an immeasurable place, embodying strength, guidance, and protection. This essay delves into the multifaceted role and importance of fathers, exploring their impact on the individual and societal levels. It aims to offer a comprehensive understanding suitable for students participating in essay writing competitions.

The Multidimensional Role of a Father

Historically, fathers have been seen primarily as providers and disciplinarians. However, the modern father transcends these traditional roles, embracing nurturing, caregiving, and emotional support. A father’s role encompasses various dimensions – as a mentor, protector, teacher, and friend, each aspect contributing significantly to the holistic development of a child.

Fathers as Providers

The role of a father as a provider has evolved. While traditionally associated with financial support, providing now also encompasses emotional and intellectual nourishment. A father’s provision is foundational, offering stability and security that underpin the family’s overall well-being.

Fathers as Teachers and Mentors

Fathers impart life skills and wisdom, teaching through example and direct instruction. This mentorship plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s values, ethics, and understanding of the world. The lessons taught by a father—ranging from practical skills to moral guidance—leave a lasting imprint on a child’s character.

Fathers as Protectors

The protective nature of fathers is both physical and emotional. This role extends beyond safeguarding the family from physical harm, encompassing the creation of a safe emotional space where every family member feels valued and understood. A father’s protection provides a sense of security essential for healthy development.

Fathers as Emotional Anchors

Contrary to the stereotypical image of stoicism, fathers significantly contribute to the emotional development of their children. A father’s involvement and emotional availability are critical in developing a child’s self-esteem, confidence, and social skills. By expressing love, understanding, and empathy, fathers strengthen the emotional bonds within the family.

The Impact of a Father’s Involvement

Research consistently shows the positive impact of a father’s active involvement in child-rearing. Children with engaged fathers are more likely to succeed academically, exhibit fewer behavioral problems, and develop robust emotional intelligence. The presence of a supportive father figure also correlates with better mental health and lower levels of delinquency among adolescents.

Fathers and Gender Roles

Fathers play a pivotal role in shaping their children’s understanding of gender roles. Through their actions and attitudes, fathers can promote gender equality and teach respect for all individuals, regardless of gender. By sharing household responsibilities and treating all family members with respect, fathers model behaviors that encourage gender equity.

The Changing Face of Fatherhood

The concept of fatherhood is continually evolving, reflecting broader social and cultural shifts. Today’s fathers are increasingly involved in all aspects of childcare, from the early stages of a child’s life. This shift towards more engaged fatherhood benefits families and society, challenging outdated stereotypes and fostering more equitable family dynamics.

Challenges Faced by Fathers

Despite the evolving role of fathers, many face challenges such as work-life balance, societal expectations, and the pressure to conform to traditional models of masculinity. Addressing these challenges requires societal support, including policies that promote paternity leave and workplace flexibility, allowing fathers to be more active in their children’s lives.

The Absence of a Father

The absence of a father, whether due to separation, divorce, or other circumstances, can have profound effects on a child’s development. It highlights the importance of other male figures—such as grandfathers, uncles, and mentors—in providing the support and guidance typically associated with fatherhood. The community’s role becomes crucial in filling the void left by an absent father.

In conclusion, The role and importance of a father in one’s life cannot be overstated. Fathers are not just providers and protectors but also mentors, teachers, and emotional anchors. Their involvement has a profound and lasting impact on their children’s lives, influencing their development, values, and future relationships. As society continues to evolve, so too does the concept of fatherhood, embracing a more inclusive and active participation in all aspects of family life. For students participating in essay writing competitions, understanding the diverse roles of fathers is essential in appreciating their significance in individual lives and society at large. Celebrating and acknowledging the contributions of fathers is crucial in recognizing the multifaceted nature of their role, which extends far beyond traditional expectations, enriching the fabric of families and communities worldwide.

The essay prompt for option #1 of the 2018-19 Common Application allows students a lot of breadth: " Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story ."

The prompt allows students to write about just about anything they find extremely important in their lives. Charlie chose this option because his atypical family situation was a defining part of his identity. Here is his essay:

Charlie's Common Application Essay

I have two dads. They met in the early 80s, became partners soon after, and adopted me in 2000. I think I’ve always know that we were a little different from most families, but that’s never really bothered me. My story, that which defines me, is not that I have two dads. I’m not automatically a better person, or smarter, or more talented, or better looking because I am the child of a same-sex couple. I’m not defined by the number of fathers I have (or the lack of mothers). Having two dads is inherent to my person not because of the novelty; it’s inherent because it has afforded me a completely unique life perspective.
I’m very fortunate to have grown up in a loving and safe environment—with caring friends, family, and neighbors. I know for my dads, that was not always the case. Living on a farm in Kansas, my dad Jeff struggled internally with his identity for years. My dad Charley was luckier; born and raised in New York City, he was always supported by his parents and the community there. He only has a few stories of being harassed on the street or the subway. Dad Jeff, though, has a web of scarring on his right arm, from the time he was jumped leaving a bar; one of the men pulled a knife on him. When I was little, he used to make up stories about these scars; it wasn’t until I was fifteen that he told me the truth.
I know how to be afraid. My dads know how to be afraid—for me, for themselves, for the life they’ve created. When I was six, a man threw a brick through our front window. I don’t remember much about that night save for a few images: the police arriving, my aunt Joyce helping to clean up the glass, my dads hugging, how they let me sleep in their bed that night. This night wasn’t a turning point for me, a realization that the world is an ugly, nasty place. We carried on as usual, and nothing like that ever happened again. I guess, in retrospect, my dads were just used to living slightly afraid. But it never stopped them from going out in public, being seen together, being seen with me. Through their bravery, their unwillingness to give in, they taught me the virtue of courage more concretely and lasting than a thousand parables or Bible verses ever could.
I also know how to respect people. Growing up in a “different” family dynamic has led me to appreciate and understand others who are labeled as “different.” I know how they feel. I know where they’re coming from. My dads know what it is like to be spat on, looked down on, yelled at, and belittled. Not only do they want to keep me from being bullied; they want to keep me from bullying. They have taught me, through their actions, beliefs, and habits, always to strive to be the best person I can. And I know countless other people have learned the same things from their own parents. But my story is different.
I wish having same-sex parents wasn’t the novelty it is. I’m not a charity case, or a miracle, or a role model because I have two dads. But I am who I am because of them. Because of all they’ve lived through, dealt with, suffered, and tolerated. And from that, they’ve taught me how to help others, how to care about the world, how to make a difference—in a thousand small ways. I am not just the “boy with two dads;” I’m the boy with two dads who taught him how to be a decent, caring, courageous, and loving human being.

A Critique of Charlie's Common Application Essay

Overall, Charlie has written a strong essay. This critique looks at the features of the essay that make it shine as well as a few areas that could use a little improvement.

The Essay Title

Charlie's title is short and simple, but it is also effective. Most college applicants have a single dad, so the mention of plural "dads" is likely to pique the interest of the reader. Good titles don't need to be funny, punny, or clever, and Charlie has clearly gone for a straight-forward but effective approach. There are, of course, many strategies for writing a good essay title , but Charlie has done a good job on this front.

The Essay Length

For the 2018-19 academic year, the Common Application essay has a word limit of 650 and a minimum length of 250 words. At 630 words, Charlie's essay is on the long side of the range. You'll see advice from many college counselors stating that you are better off keeping your essay short, but that advice is controversial. Sure, you don't want to have wordiness, fluff, digressions, vague language, or redundancy in your essay (Charlie is not guilty of any of these sins). But a well-crafted, tight, 650-word essay can provide the admissions folks with a more detailed portrait of you than a 300-word essay.

The fact that the college is asking for an essay means that it has holistic admissions , and the admissions folks want to learn about you as an individual. Use the space you've been given to do so. Again, there are many theories about the ideal essay length , but you can obviously do a more thorough job introducing yourself to the college with an essay that takes advantage of the space you've been given.

The Essay Topic

Charlie steers clear of some of the obvious bad essay topics , and he has certainly focused on a topic that the admissions folks won't see very frequently. His topic is an excellent choice for Common Application option #1 for his domestic situation has clearly played a defining role in who he is. There are, of course, a few conservative colleges with religious affiliations that would not look favorably upon this essay, but that's not an issue here since those are schools that would not be a good match for Charlie.

The essay topic is also a good choice in that it illustrates how Charlie will contribute to the diversity of the college campus. Colleges want to enroll a diverse college class, for we all learn from interacting with people who are different than us. Charlie contributes to diversity not through race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, but by having an upbringing that is different from the great majority of people.

Weaknesses of the Essay

For the most part, Charlie has written an excellent essay. The prose in the essay is clear and fluid, and aside from an incorrect punctuation mark and a vague pronoun reference, the writing is pleasing free of errors.

Although Charlie's essay isn't likely to create any significant concerns from readers, the tone of the conclusion could use a little reworking. The last sentence, in which he calls himself "a decent, caring, courageous, and loving human being," comes across as a little strong with the self-praise. In fact, that last paragraph would be stronger if Charlie simply cut the final sentence. He's already made the point in that sentence without the problem of tone we encounter at the very end. This is a classic case of "show, don't tell." Charlie has shown that he is a decent person, so he doesn't need to spoon feed that information to his reader.

The Overall Impression

Charlie's essay has much that is excellent, and the admissions folks are likely to respond positively to how understated most of it is. For example, when Charlie narrates the scene of the brick flying through the window, he says, "this night wasn't a turning point for me." This is not an essay about sudden life-changing epiphanies; rather, it is about the life-long lessons in bravery, perseverance, and love that have made Charlie into the person that he is.

A couple simple questions you can ask when evaluating an essay are these: 1) Does the essay help us get to know the applicant better? 2) Does the applicant seem like someone who would contribute to a campus community in a positive way? With Charlie's essay, the answer to both questions is yes.

My father is a pillar of strength and wisdom, he holds a special place in my heart. His influence on my life cannot be turned into words. He is everything to me, right from the source of motivation, and inspiration to a guiding light in my entire life journey. His dedication to our family is commendable. He literally works all day and sometimes night too, just to give us a better lifestyle. He strives every single minute to provide us with everything that we deserve at the cost of his own desires. He is just selflessly committed to our happiness.

His work ethic is a source of valuable lessons for me. His early childhood education gave me lifelong lessons and teachings that he just serves on a plate before us can be hard to understand but are fruitful enough to bless our entire lives with the best of all. Whether we talk about his advice on facing challenges, making ethical decisions, or simply navigating the complexities of life, he has been a super savior for the entire family life long. A true example of unconditional love is a father in any child’s life. He can be bitter at times but can be sweet as sugar too. He can even fight with you to keep you on the right track and protect you from any hurdles that may come your way.

Right from the source of happiness to a bundle of motivation, he is everything to the entire family. A father is like a shield in this melting weather, nobody can harm his child if he is there.

Essay on My Father in 500 Words

A father has a unique place in our hearts and lives. He is my protector, provider, and role model. In my entire life, my father has been playing all these roles without even complaining a single time or even without crying or getting upset. His only and foremost motivation is our smiling faces, fulfilled needs, and a decent lifestyle. He goes to work every morning and returns home in the evening with something to eat for us constantly without fail. He bought us new clothes every Diwali but never got himself even a pair of new shoes. His presence and influence have shaped me the who I am today, fearless, respectful, and independent.

From my early childhood days, I recall his comforting presence, that if he was there no negative energy could even come close to me or nobody could do any harm to me. Right from teaching me how to walk to teaching me how to ride a bicycle, my father has been an unwavering support for me. He always stands with me whenever I need his help, he guides me well during my challenging time. His unshook confidence in me and my capabilities gives me the strength to achieve my dreams and make him proud of myself.

Out of many one of the most remarkable qualities of my father is his wisdom. His life experiences and enriched understanding of the world have been a source of learning all throughout my life. I have never seen him crying, or getting weak. He always stays strong shares positive ora with everybody in the family and stays a one-stop solution to all our problems. My father’s work ethic is another aspect of his character that I deeply admire. He has always believed in the value of hard work and dedication. Witnessing his commitment to providing for our family has given me a strong work ethic. I have learned that success is not merely the result of talent or luck but rather a result of constant effort and determination.

My father’s love for learning has left a deep impact on me. He is a seeker of knowledge for me. His curiosity and enthusiasm for discovering new things have inspired me so much in my own educational journey. Also, these factors have made a great impact on my personal growth. He has taught me that learning is a lifelong journey and that knowledge is the only way to deal with all the complex situations of life. Apart from his wisdom and values, my father carries a great sense of humor. His ability to find joy and laughter in everyday situations has taught me not to take life too seriously. His laughter and humor have been a source of comfort during challenging times. I love the way he softly balances family and life, even though it pushes so many difficult situations in front of him. He never broke, instead, he gets stronger and responsible enough to handle these things, so that the bad situations do not reach out to us.

Introduce a reflective introduction, develop the body, and be reflective while you are writing an essay on your father.

My Father Essay

Table of Contents

This essay will tell you about my father who is perfect for me.

There is an opinion that perfect dads do not exist, however, I strongly want to disagree with this opinion. Maybe not all the dads are perfect, but mine definitely is. My father is special and everything he does and says is special too. I like the way he dresses, he behaves, he moves and speaks. I am really proud of being his daughter, as I am a small present of a great person he is. Let me describe my father so that you understood how special he is.

When you look at him for the first time, you can think that he wears only classy and formal clothes. However, it is just first glance opinion. When you know my father for a long time you can notice that he feels comfortable in all types of clothes: formal, informal, sportive, cheap, expensive, loose, tight fitting. All these clothes are different, but I like them all as each piece accentuates his life style and his habits. What is more, all his clothes fit his body stature. My dad’s appearance is unique and he knows how to outline it the best way.

If we start talking about his appearance, it is important to mention that the way he moves and acts reflects his personality a lot. He prefers fast walking to the calm one. I think that his manner to walk quickly shows his desire to catch the time and manage to take the most of his life. He enjoys every part of his wonderful life. Even when he eats you can get jealous of him, as he will eat the simplest dish with such a delight as if it is the most expensive and delicious food in the world. He is happy and thankful for every piece of meal he gets, and he enjoys it.

He usually does not speak while eating, however, when he speaks it is one more story to tell. Communicating with my father, you will be able to notice any emotion and expression he has about the subject he is talking about. When he worries about some issues – he frowns, when he is happy – he smiles. It is easy to read his emotion on his face. It is even more interesting to talk with him when you can observe his face and analyze the feelings he has towards this or that topic.

Essay Writing

It is extremely interesting to listen to him. You can always find out some new information, learn something and share your experience with him. I can always rely on my father and I am confident that his opinion is objective. In case I want to get honest opinion of a person who doesn’t care, I would ask my father. His opinion always comes from the bottom of his heart. On the other hand, he knows how to choose the best time for it; he waits for the time when I am calm and relaxed so that I can easily perceive the information. Sometimes there may be a situation that everything goes wrong, and I feel bad. My father can always find right words and give good advice. These moments are important for me because I feel the support, I know that I am not alone, and it gives me confidence.

My father does not usually show off his feelings a lot. He might be strict and serious when we are out, but I know that he loves me, and I can feel his love in every movement and every sight. He is not used to kissing or cuddling me every day, however, when he does it once a week or so it is clear that these actions are extremely sincere and come from the big heart of my father. Every single time he gives me a cuddle, I feel overwhelmed with love and his attention. And these are the most precious moments of our relationships with my father.

This is my father the way I see him. This is the father I love so much! And it is the only thing that matters! I have the clear understanding that there are no perfect people in the Earth; however, my father is perfect for me. He is my role model and he is the person I want to be similar to when I will grow up. I want to have a family and I want my children to be as found of me as I am of my father. I love my father very much and I do appreciate everything he does for my development and me. I think that my father and I have perfect relationships and I hope that with flow of time they will only improve.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

Essay on My Father in 500 Words

My Father Essay in 500 Words

Everyone talks about the love and affection of a mother in life. But most of the time we ignore the love and feelings for the father in all the shows, movies, and other things. Father is that person who gives us strength and support from the back.

Whatever we achieve in our life, the father has the biggest contribution to that. Most of the fathers are the ideal person for their kids. I am sharing about my father here.

About My Father:

My father is a farmer and we live in a village . He is a hard-working person. I am proud of my father. There are so many reasons why I am proud of him. First of all, I want to tell you about his life. He wakes up early in the morning and after breakfast, he takes all the cows on the field.

We have five big cows and we make a good amount of money selling milk. Then he goes to the paddy field. He works there till 2 PM. Then he comes back home and takes a shower and eats his lunch. Then he brings the cows back home.

And sometimes in the early morning, he takes milk from the cows. In the afternoon, he goes to the village market to buy all the necessary things. Then he comes back home. He goes to sleep at 10 PM. He is living a very simple life. But he is a hard-working person.

He is an honest man and that’s why all the people around us believe him a lot. Everyone gives him respect and loves him. Our neighborhood is amazing. Everyone helps each other in need. My father is also very helpful and dedicated to the people.

Why My Father is a Hero?

I consider my father as a hero. There are so many reasons behind that. The first reason is he is the only person who makes money for the family . We are seven members of the family, but only he is supporting us financially.

We four siblings are students and he needs to spend a good amount of money for us every month. It’s not easy for him. But he always does that successfully. I can’t even imagine how hard working he is. He is a peaceful person who loves to live peacefully.

He never buys any expensive things for himself. He tries his best to make us happy. I feel lucky and great to become the son of him. I have never seen a person that much dedicated to his family.

Essay on My Father in 700 Words

Essay on My Father in 700 Words

Father is that person who sacrifices all of his happiness for his kids. My father is not different. My dad is a very simple and happy person. He is the most important person in the family and we are going ahead because of his support.

I can tell that he is acting like a pillar of a huge building. I have lots of things to tell about my father and I will share them here. My father is a superman, a hero, and a role model for me. Always followed him and I never regretted that.

My father’s name is Jahid Hasan and he is an accountant in a government office. He is very fond of his colleagues and other officemates. He is known in our area because of his honesty, dedication, and a hard-working person.

He loves working. That’s why he spends most of his time doing things that add benefit to our life. I am a happy boy and my father is a happy family, all that has been possible just because of my father. His contribution is uncountable for the entire family.

We all are having a good life because of his hard work. I always feel special about him and feel proud to have such an amazing dad. He is always super busy due to office work. But still, he finds time to play with me and take me out.

He is a movie lover. He loves watching old cinemas. When he gets some free time he starts watching them. The whole family goes to watch a movie in the theatre sometimes. He has some amazing hobbies and he is very passionate about all these things.

My Father is Different:

I can claim that my dad is different from others. I have some good reasons. When I was a kid, he started acting with me as a friend, and still, now we are the same. I think he has been able to keep that bonding between us strongly.

He is the only person who is earning in the family, but he never showed any ego or any anger to anyone. He is a soft-hearted person, but when he faces any challenges he can face that with lots of strength and courage. He was a great student in his student life and made himself successful by all his hard work.

My Father is My Hero:

He is a hero for me. I have loved to follow him since childhood. I feel great when I see my father and think about what he is doing. A couple of years ago, my village faced a huge flood. My father went there with a huge collection of food and medicine.

He worked there for almost a week and distributed them to villagers. He took the initiative on his own and worked very hard for that. I can remember, when he came back he was extremely tired. He loves to help people and work for society. He is connected with lots of social welfare groups too.

My Father as a Friend:

He is a good friend too. I can share all my things with him. From my childhood, I am sharing everything. And that has made everything easy between us. We don’t have any gap. He is always a smiling person and he loves to spend time with me.

It has made us closer. I also enjoy spending time with my dad. She shares different types of stories and moral things that help me to grow better. I have realized in my life that all of his words came true. That’s why I always obeyed him and I never regretted because of that.

Why Do I Like My Father?

There are so many reasons that are why I love him. First of all, he is my father and my best friend. He is the most important person in the family.

Whatever I am doing now is just because of him. He is a person with a smile and never a complaint. He supports everyone and gives the courage to fight against all odd things.

I love my father a lot. And it’s not possible to count the son’s love for his father. And I know my father also loves me a lot. I think he is the best dad ever.

I planned on confronting my absent father about his parenting. But when I asked to hear his side, I learned a powerful lesson.

 • My father was absent throughout most of my life, so I went to Ghana to confront him about it.
 • In Ghana, I learned about my father's past and understood his perspective for the first time.
 • Although we will never be close, the conversation healed our relationship and taught me empathy.

Insider Today

A few years ago, I visited my father in Ghana and asked to hear his story about why he was an absent parent . This conversation helped me heal, forgive, and transform how I view disagreements today.

At the time, I had a lot of built-up resentment and anger toward my dad. In my mind, he stopped making a meaningful effort to see me or show up for me after he remarried. He and his new family lived in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Finland — while my mom, my brother, and I initially struggled with being unhoused and being on welfare here in the US.

I dealt with a lot of feelings of rejection , which I'd reflected on and worked through in therapy during my 20s. But in my 30s, it all came back, and I needed to deal with it head-on.

I decided to meet with my father to talk things through

There were times when I'd be driving, and I'd find myself weeping, questioning what I'd done to cause him not to fight for me. It was clear his rejection of me was still affecting the way I move about the world.

During a leadership training program, my cohort and I discussed our origins. I shared with the cohort that I had an upcoming trip to Ghana, and I had plans to confront my father.

Politely, a cohort member raised their hand. "Hey, what would it look like if you took a different approach?" he asked. "We all have empathy for each other because we know each other's stories."

I felt my heart rate quicken and my jaw clench in defensiveness. Despite my defensiveness, his words planted a seed that I brought up with my therapist. Together, my therapist and I started preparing for how I would turn my "confrontation" into a "conversation" with my father.

When the time came for my kids and me to travel to Ghana, I asked my father for one-on-one time and broached the topic.

"Hey, Dad, I never really heard your story. What was life like growing up for you, and what happened between us?"

Related stories

My father told me about his journey with his dad, his custody struggles , and the interpersonal conflicts between him and my mother. Eventually, he explained that he concluded: "Justin will come find me when he's ready."

I also asked my father to share his experiences growing up

My father grew up in Ghana, and his own father was only around a fraction of the time. My father also left his entire family for boarding school at 14 years old, and at 16, he left Ghana to come to the US.

Hearing this story, a lump formed in my throat as I felt — for the first time — empathy for my dad. I wonder how he felt as a little boy.

Fully immersing myself in my dad's story wasn't easy. It was challenging to remove my biased perspective of anger and distrust. I pushed myself to engage from a place of curiosity and ask him questions as if I was a student.

Hearing my dad's story helped me understand

At the end of our conversation, I told my father I disagreed with his approach but understood how he arrived at his conclusion. We hugged, and my father told me he was proud of me, which I never heard growing up.

This conversation did not transform us into a father-son duo holding hands and walking into the sunset. My dad's decision not to fight for a place in my life robbed both of us of father-son experiences that we can never get back.

However, this conversation gave me access to my heritage, Ghana, which I'd previously avoided. This allowed me to get involved in social entrepreneurial projects, like working with an elementary school and hiring and training Ghanaian staff members.

It also gave me access to an incredible mentor, my father . Previously, I avoided my dad. Now, I actively seek him out, particularly when I need feedback on a project.

Perhaps most importantly, this conversation taught me a profound lesson I now apply to every area of my life. I learned that when we do not seek to understand and respect the person we disagree with, it only hurts us.

That day, if I had chosen to confront my father from a place of vitriol and anger, his rejection would still haunt me, and I would have never learned the powerful lesson that every person has a story that shapes who they are today.

Tampines fatal accident: Man who helped victims said teen’s dad kept calling for her

dad or father in essay

SINGAPORE - The sarong-clad good Samaritan who helped victims and directed traffic after the fatal Tampines accident, which killed two people on April 22, said he is still haunted by flashbacks.

Mr Sheikh Imran Sheikh Ahmad, 40, especially remembers how Mr Muhammad Azril, the driver of a Honda Stream that had turned turtle, repeatedly cried out his daughter’s name while trapped in their car.

The girl, Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril , 17, who had also been in the accident, died in hospital that day.

Madam Norzihan Juwahib, 57, a senior technician at pest control firm First Choice Pest Specialist, also died. She had been a passenger in the company’s van, which was one of the six vehicles involved in the crash.

Mr Imran, a property agent, spoke to The Straits Times on April 24 at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 4, where the accident happened.

In several videos online, the father of five children, aged one to 12, could be seen directing traffic at the junction after the accident, clad in a long-sleeved grey shirt and a chequered sarong.

That day, Mr Imran had just taken three of his children to school in Braddell, and was driving back to his Tampines flat with his wife in the front passenger seat.

He was wearing a sarong, as that was his attire for his usual morning prayers, which he had done earlier before leaving home.

They were third in line at the junction when he heard a loud crash and saw smoke billowing in front.

He said: “We were shocked for about two seconds. I saw someone go up to the (overturned) car and try to open the door, but it didn’t budge. So I felt I needed to help.”

He parked his car by the side of the road and went forward, where he saw bystanders trying to help Mr Azril.

Said Mr Imran: “My first instinct was to give the person inside some air because I could see he was still moving. So I forced the door open, or whatever was left of the car, and I was asking (Mr Azril), ‘Are you okay? Can you move?’”

He said Mr Azril, who had a bloodshot eye, told him that he was in pain and that his daughter was in the car.

When Mr Imran saw a girl clad in a Temasek Junior College shirt lying motionless on the road, his heart sank.

He said Mr Azril could not see Afifah and kept calling her name.

He added: “The other bystanders and I decided not to tell him that was his daughter.

“I am a father, so I felt how he felt... when your daughter is gone like this, and you don’t know where she is and you can’t get out to see her.”

Mr Azril, a Police Coast Guard officer, was taking Afifah to a school event in their car when the crash happened. He suffered kidney- and spine-related injuries.

Five other people, including two 11-year-old boys, were also taken to hospital.

Afifah and Madam Norzihan were buried at Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery on April 23, and their graves were just one plot apart.

As Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police officers arrived at the accident scene, Mr Imran hauled debris away from the junction and helped to direct traffic.

The crash had caused a major traffic jam, with drivers honking and trying to cut across blocked-off lanes.

Mr Imran guided cars into the correct lanes.

He said: “When you’re driving and there’s an accident, you will look at the accident. I believe that can cause more accidents because you’re looking and don’t pay attention.”

He stayed at the scene for around 45 minutes before he went home, which is about a three-minute drive from the scene.

dad or father in essay

That afternoon, he had to compose himself before leaving home again to fetch his children from school.

He said: “It took me about 10 to 15 minutes before I could drive off, because I was just sitting and thinking this could have happened to anyone.

“Every time I drive past here, I can still hear the father’s (Mr Azril’s) words. It’s just very sad.”

As Mr Imran was speaking to ST, three of Madam Norzihan’s family members came to the accident site.

Gazing quietly at the 40 or so bouquets left by members of the public beside a board placed by the police appealing for witnesses, one of them said: “We’re just here to visit.”

The SCDF said on April 22 that several members of the public, including a nurse and two off-duty SCDF officers, helped the injured after the accident, and it will be commending them for their public spiritedness.

On April 24, one of the drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident, a 42-year-old man, was arrested for dangerous driving causing death after he was discharged from hospital.

On his decision to help, Mr Imran said: “Hopefully by doing so, in the future if there are any other accidents, people will not be afraid to step up.”

Britney Spears and Her Father Settle Legal Dispute Over Conservatorship

Terms were not disclosed. The parties had been arguing over the payment of legal fees and James P. Spears’s financial oversight as his daughter’s conservator.

Reporting from Los Angeles

More than two years after a judge ended the conservatorship that had given James P. Spears control of his pop star daughter’s life, Britney Spears and her father have settled their outstanding legal dispute over the payment of his legal fees and his management of her finances.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed in court filings made by both parties in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday. But the two sides had been at odds over the size of Mr. Spears’s legal fees and questions about his oversight of her money as conservator.

Ms. Spears’s 13-year-long conservatorship, which began in 2008 after a series of public breakdowns, was terminated in 2021. Her father, who served as one of her conservators for its duration, had been seeking court approval for more than $2 million in fees to multiple law firms he had hired in that capacity. He had also sought payment of his current lawyer’s ongoing legal bill.

Ms. Spears’s lawyer, Mathew S. Rosengart, had objected to the fees.

Mr. Rosengart argued that, in particular, his client should not have to pay her father’s current legal bills, asserting in court papers that Mr. Spears had paid himself $6 million, improperly surveilled his daughter and engaged in financial misconduct during his tenure.

Mr. Spears has denied any wrongdoing. He held control over both Ms. Spears’s financial and personal affairs until September 2019, when he resigned as her personal conservator citing health issues, and was replaced by Jodi Montgomery, a professional in the field. A lawyer, Andrew M. Wallet, served as a co-conservator of her estate until he resigned in 2019.

Alex M. Weingarten, a lawyer for Mr. Spears, said he could not discuss the terms of the settlement because they are confidential but he agreed that the parties had resolved all outstanding issues. One of the filings stated that his client “is fully and finally discharged as Former Conservator of the Estate.”

“Jamie is thrilled all this is over,” Mr. Weingarten said. “He regrets the irresponsible and specious allegations made against him in public.”

In a statement on Friday, Mr. Rosengart said it had been an honor to represent Ms. Spears, who he referred to as a “brilliant and brave artist of historic and epic proportion.”

He added that, with the court filings, “her wish for freedom is now truly complete.”

“As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court in this matter,” the statement concluded.

The legal activity left unclear whether Mr. Spears and Ms. Spears have made any progress toward reconciling their differences outside of court.

“Jamie loves his daughter very much,” Mr. Weingarten said. “He would love nothing more than to reconcile and be a family again. He has only ever acted in Britney’s best interests.”

It was a very quiet ending to what has been an angry and extremely public dispute between father and daughter, with Ms. Spears telling the court at one point that she wanted to see her father in jail. Mr. Spears has insisted in a legal filing and other settings that he deserved praise for his job managing his daughter’s mental health and substance issues.

A trial was set to start in May. The two sides had spent the last two and a half years in court fighting over depositions and discovery. Ms. Spears had paid more than $30 million in fees to dozens of law firms over the course of the conservatorship. One issue remaining unresolved is Ms. Spears’s former court-appointed lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III and an associated law firm’s request for fees incurred before Ms. Spears was allowed to choose her own lawyer in 2021.

Since leaving the conservatorship, Ms. Spears has been married and divorced, and published a successful memoir , “The Woman in Me,” that has sold more than 2 million copies and was a New York Times best seller.

Ms. Spears’s Las Vegas residency ended in 2017, and in 2019 she canceled a planned follow-up, announcing “an indefinite work hiatus.” She appeared alongside Elton John on a song in 2022, but has not seemed anxious to return to her pop career. “Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment,” Spears writes in her book . “It’s time for me not to be someone who other people want; it’s time to actually find myself.”

Although a man of fewer words, he understands everything without explaining. Unlike my father, my mother is a very chatty person. My father's silent energy is vital for maintaining the balance of the home.

He is an honest, hardworking and disciplined man. I cannot recall any work my father did that required a rework. The first thing I learned from my father was that no matter how small or big the job is, it is essential to give total effort and dedication. This advice changed my life. He never spoke much but was always beside my mother as a constant shadow and me. He has provided us with a very peaceful, fulfilling life.

My Father Is Special | My father enjoys the silly side of me and appreciates it too, but he also maintains strictness when the need arises. He tries his best to fulfil our needs, sometimes suppressing his own. He has provided me with a safe, open and accessible environment where I can keep my thoughts freely without hesitation, thus eliminating the need for lies.

My father Is Benevolent | My father is very caring towards animals, which instilled sympathy in me. He is a very charitable person who believes in silent donations. I have never witnessed him misbehaving, raising his voice, or cussing anyone, regardless of his anger. He always respects elders and follows culture and tradition with complete faith.

My father Is My Inspiration | My father spends his weekend teaching underprivileged kids at no cost. He goes to a nearby park and holds maths tuitions for kids of all ages. He also makes considerable donations to stray dog welfare associations. He has made me understand the real meaning of love and compassion. My interest in becoming a veterinary doctor is through him.

My father has all the qualities of a beautiful human being that I aspire to be. My father’s gift of quality time, long-lasting conversation, life-changing advice and positive actions have significantly impacted my life. I strive every day to become like him. I only hope when I have a family of my own, every day, I see a little more of my father in me and that I can be as good of a parent figure to my kids.

dad or father in essay

My parents are gone, but my journey to Puerto Rico brought me back to them

A few days after I was born in November 1953, my father snapped a picture of me in my mother’s arms, our German shepherd Carly lying at Mom’s feet. I grew up looking at that photo, made spectacular by a dramatic cliff and the brilliant blue water just a few feet away.

I was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, when my dad, a pediatrician and Air Force captain, was stationed at Ramey Air Force Base. Now decommissioned, Ramey was a Strategic Air Command base from which nuclear armed B-52s flew prolonged missions at the height of the Cold War.

By virtue of my island birth, I’ve always had an interest in Puerto Rico’s history and culture. We moved away when I was only a few months old, but I dreamed of revisiting the place where I came into the world.

Finally, in December 2010, my wife and I traveled to Puerto Rico with our sons, then 20 and 15. I wasn’t just curious to see Aguadilla and the old base hospital where I was born, now a Marriott hotel. I wanted to find the spot where my father had captured that moment of my mother and me, when my entire life still lay ahead.

It took some doing. Access to the beach wasn’t well marked at the time, and the road was little more than a washboard dirt path. As we walked into what was to me a familiar scene because of that treasured photo, my reaction surprised me and, I think, embarrassed my kids because they couldn’t understand it: I started to cry. And the waves of emotion just kept coming.

My dad had died in 1997 and my mom in 2008. But here they had stood, on this deserted beach in the Caribbean with their newborn baby, with so much living, some of it difficult, ahead of them. It was a future they could not know, but which I knew in great detail because it was now my past. On that November day in 1953, they didn’t know that two years later they would have another son, and decades later, the two grandchildren standing next to me on that same beach. They couldn’t foresee that their young marriage would later become fraught and end in divorce.

Dad didn’t know his cigarette habit would likely contribute to the lung cancer that would kill him 44 years later, and Mom couldn’t have imagined her fatal pancreatic cancer 55 years on. They didn’t know how their lives would play out, or how they’d end, but I did. It was as if I were simultaneously standing at two points in time, decades apart.

As I walked the beach, I found myself looking down at the sand, half expecting a Twilight Zone moment in which I might find something — a driver’s license perhaps, or Carly’s dog tag — that they’d dropped that November day decades ago.

Standing there, I felt an intense and surreal connection to my late parents. My connection to the island grew, too. Puerto Rico is a US territory, both apart from and part of the United States, which has exploited it for over a century. A 1917 act of Congress making all Puerto Ricans American citizens was followed weeks later, not coincidentally, by a new federal law allowing the US military to draft young Puerto Rican men to fight in World War I.

A legally recognized Puerto Rican national citizenship still exists. In 2020, approaching 70 and reckoning with mortality, I formalized my birthright citizenship. My citizenship certificate signed by the Puerto Rico secretary of state, that 1953 snapshot of Mom and me, and my memories of standing on that shore with my wife and kids more than a half-century later bind me to the place where I drew my first breath.

A dying father looks for the perfect family to adopt his son in 'nowhere special'.

Bob Mondello 2010

Bob Mondello

A young single dad is on a mission in the film Nowhere Special . With a terminal illness and no family to turn to, he's searching for the perfect adoptive family for his four-year-old son.

AILSA CHANG, HOST:

British actor James Norton stars in the BBC crime series "Happy Valley," and he's also on many a shortlist to be the next James Bond. But critic Bob Mondello says Norton's new father-son film, "Nowhere Special," finds him in a gentler, more vulnerable place.

BOB MONDELLO, BYLINE: John is a window washer in Belfast, going about his trade so unobtrusively you'd never notice him if the camera weren't turned his way. But there's a reason it's turned his way.

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "NOWHERE SPECIAL")

JAMES NORTON: (As John) This is the biggest decision of my life. Don't they understand? Don't you?

MONDELLO: John has just a few months to live, which is made doubly challenging because John has a 4-year-old son, Michael. His decision, in tandem with the social services folks he's talking to, is about what happens next.

NORTON: (As John) It's not about me wanting to be right. It's...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) I do understand. That's why I'm here.

MONDELLO: Michael's mother abandoned them shortly after he was born, and with no other family members, John must now find his toddler a new family. And he's full of doubts.

NORTON: (As John) It's Michael. I always thought that I knew him. I mean, I do, I do. You know, he's my son. But do I know him, really know him, you know, enough for this?

MONDELLO: The social services team has lists of folks who are eager to adopt, among them a postman and his wife who have adopted before...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character) Your child will be part of a big family.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #3: (As character) Real people that respect you. Not people who talk down to you, know what I mean, John?

MONDELLO: ...A chilly transactional household that feels all wrong...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #4: (As character) Doesn't really look like his photo, does he? - or you. Does he look like the mother?

MONDELLO: ...A wealthy couple who could offer Michael things John couldn't...

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #5: (As character) Does he like nature? We're very outdoorsy people. We like to go for long walks, as you can see.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #6: (As character) And of course we can afford the best education for our son. I mean, your son.

MONDELLO: ...All while James Norton's quietly devastated John is trying to figure out what he can possibly say to Michael as every moment grows more precious.

NORTON: (As John) Would you like to live somewhere else, in a different time, different home?

DANIEL LAMONT: (As Michael) I like home.

MONDELLO: Played by a doe-eyed Daniel Lamont, Michael seems to sense that something's amiss, and, heartbreakingly, his instinct is to reassure and comfort, using his own blanket to cover daddy when he's resting on the couch and turning pages at story time.

NORTON: (As John) He gave his dad a little wave. Page. And when he reached the other side, his father's heart was full of pride.

MONDELLO: Writer-director Uberto Pasolini lets all of this play out without grandstanding. The filmmaker doesn't embellish. We don't even hear what illness afflicts John. We just see things through his eyes, a window washer's eyes. He's used to catching glimpses through glass of worlds he'll never enter. But to have his son's future be like that? The ache is enormous, even as he finds the words Michael needs and a safe harbor just as his window for decision-making starts to close.

I'm Bob Mondello.
