You’ll find that the coffee house is almost always packed with people working away. Their coffee and sandwiches are delicious, and best of all, the Wifi is also excellent! The coffee house is spacious yet still has the ideal cozy atmosphere.

But they close at 11 pm every other day.

Crushed is actually not a coffee shop, per se. It is a trendy restaurant in Pacific Beach . However, it is still a wonderful place to get work while enjoying a tasty b runch! Since it isn’t a coffee shop, it doesn’t open that early in the morning. Its 10 am opening time still leaves you plenty of time to work, and they stay open until midnight !

8. krakatoa cafe.

Krakatoa is an excellent Golden Hill little coffee shop with a relaxed vibe. The cafe is a repurposed craftsman house with a large patio deck that wraps around the. It’s a great spot to spend the whole day as they open up at 6:30 am and close up at 8 pm every day except on Sundays. If you get a caffeine rush after hours of working, we suggest you try one of their refreshing smoothies!

I work remotely and over the past few years I have spent a lot of time working from different places in San Diego.

Some cities are more suitable for remote workers and digital nomads than others. And I have to say, San Diego has so many coffee shops to work from plus great co-working options making this a perfect city for working remotely!

From the large number of coffee shops in San Diego, it’s hard to choose just a few top places.

But, I talked to a lot of other remote workers and students and these are the ones we call our favorites. Not only because of the good coffee but also because they offer good Wifi, enough space, and a nice atmosphere to find a comfortable place to set up your office for a few hours.

They tend to be the more quiet coffee shops, making them great places to study in San Diego as well .

7 of the Best Coffee Shops to Work or Study in San Diego

1. lestat’s coffee house on adams avenue.

3343 Adams Ave San Diego, CA 92116

I love this place! Open from 6:30am until midnight, 7 days a week and almost always packed with many people working away on their laptops.

Although it’s quite a big coffee shop the cozy atmosphere almost makes it feel like you are at home. Plus they offer good coffee, great sandwiches, and good Wifi.

It can get busy, especially around lunchtime, plus if you are unlucky you might have to park a few blocks away.

Lestat’s also has a coffee shop on Park Blvd and one in Hillcrest.

2. Jennings House Cafe (previously called Living Room)

1018 Rosecrans Street San Diego, CA 92106

I’ve long lost track of the number of hours I’ve spent working from here. Located in a converted home, this casual coffee shop is loved by people who have some work or studying to do.

Although it can get quite crowded downstairs, you’ll normally be able to find a quiet spot upstairs. Wifi is good and there are plugs everywhere.

Their prices are reasonable, they have a delicious selection of pastries and a good lunch menu.

Note: check their opening hours before you go here. At the time of writing their opening hours are limited (from 6am until 2pm, Friday – Tuesday) but this might change.

3. Caffe Calabria

3933 30th St San Diego, CA 92104

If you are craving a good Italian cup of coffee this is the place to go!

Definitely a step more serious than your neighborhood coffee shop. Their Italian paninis are delicious, and so are their pizzas baked in a custom-built wood-fired oven.

This cafe is a great place for an early start with a good cup of coffee, but also for a working lunch or dinner.

They open at 7am every day. Unfortunately they do close at 2:30pm on Monday and Tuesday (10pm on other days).

967 Garnet Ave San Diego, CA 92109

Crushed is a bar/restaurant and not a coffee shop but this trendy place in Pacific Beach is a good spot to get some work done and either have a delicious brunch or grab a beer while you finish up for the day.

Their mimosas are good too!

They don’t open until 10am, but they do stay open until 8pm, 7 days a week.

5. Brick & Bell Café

928 Silverado St. & 2216 Avenida de la Playa La Jolla, San Diego, CA 92109

If you are looking for an early start to get some work or studying done, Brick & Bell is a perfect option!

They open every day at 6am, and apart from roasting their own coffee, they also bake fresh pastry every morning. Their scones are a favorite of many!

They have two locations in La Jolla, and both offer breakfast and lunch options.

They close around 5pm.

6. Cafe Virtuoso

1616 National Avenue San Diego, CA 92113

If you are in need of a good cup of coffee or tea this is the place to go!

Cafe Virtuoso is a local artisan coffee roaster focusing exclusively on fair trade and organic coffees.

Their baristas are very friendly and knowledgeable and their choices of coffee are great. The place has a cool, industrial vibe unlike any other coffee shop in San Diego.

The roastery is open to the public so you can watch coffee being roasted and buy some roasted coffee beans to take home.

Downside: although they open reasonably early (8am on weekdays) they do close at 2pm. But it’s a great place to start your workday!

7. Communal Coffee

2335 University Ave  San Diego, CA 92104

Communal Coffee is a great coffee shop to work or study in .

Their North Park location is my favorite, but they also have a cafe in South Park and one in Oceanside.

With a bright, modern interior it’s a very good setting to get some work done.

I love coming here for breakfast because apart from good coffee they also have great breakfast options.

The menu at each location is slightly different, and so are the opening hours, so check those before you decide where to go.

Another Option to Work or Study: San Diego Libraries

The San Diego public library has over 30 locations so there is a good chance there is one near you.

The central library on Park Boulevard is a large, modern library with good Wifi, ample seating and a great selection of books, magazines, and newspapers.

Most other locations are small and often quiet making them good options as well to get some work or studying done.

The biggest downside of all public library locations in San Diego: they don’t open until 9.30am or even later.

Coworking Spaces in San Diego

Are you looking for a more permanent place to work from ? Or would you like to network with other remote workers? Then San Diego has a great number of coworking spaces to choose from spread around the city.

They can be a bit pricey but most of them do offer a lot of extra services, events, and networking opportunities.

Some offer a free day pass so that you can try it out first!

A couple of popular coworking spaces in San Diego are Downtown Works and Gather Cowork.

But, simply do a Google search for a coworking space near you and visit them to decide if that could work for you.

Have to agree with Rafael – on both Lestats and Jennings/Living Room

Since many of us are working and studying more from home, sometimes it s nice to go to a cozy coffee shop with great Wifi! These lovely San Diego spots are all great options to get some much-needed work done while enjoying a great cup of joe!  Lestat Coffee House is the perfect place for those all-nighters! They serve up coffee 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You ll find that the coffee house is almost always packed with people working away. Their coffee and sandwiches are delicious, and best of all, the Wifi is also excellent! The coffee house is spacious yet still has the ideal cozy atmosphere. 

We have a different idea of what a good place to work from is in San Diego. Lestat was a bit grungy and service while friendly was a bit obtuse. Wifi was OK at best and not the best coffee. I look for more comfortable chairs if I’ll be there longer then a few hours. Jennings house was cool but the wifi sucked (only half a dozen other peeps there. And two upstairs were on top of each other grinding away as the other person in the room tried to ignore them).

“Can I get a latte with an extra shot of productivity?”

You may find you work better in a coffee shop than in your bedroom, but perhaps not for the reasons you’ve been led to believe. Instead of the noise and bustle stimulating your imagination, your productivity could be because concentration is contagious.

For those who work from home, a cafe is a more inviting option than a day at the library. The idea that working in busy, noisy places like coffee shops enhances creativity and concentration has had a great deal of press over recent years. Research has shown that a moderate level of ambient noise, such as the clattering of plates and the whir of a coffee machine, improves performance on creative tasks.

There’s even a website that can help you replicate the sounds of a cafe at home. Coffitivity , which plays ambient sounds recorded in coffee shops, claims “to boost your creativity and help you work better”. It was inspired after its creators realised they worked more effectively when in a busy, noisy environment. “We had been in and out of coffee shops, and we were getting really good work done,” the site’s creators told the New York Times .

But could it be that the reason people work so effectively in busy places has more to do with the people around them than the sounds they are hearing?

We’ve known about the audience effect – that having a small audience improves performance – for close to 100 years. Similarly, it’s also well established that we perform better when we have someone to compete with. A study showing that cyclists go faster when there is a speedy pacemaker was published back in 1898.

Choosing the best cafe

But neither of these phenomena explains why being in a coffee shop filled with people reading, chatting and relaxing would make us work harder. Perhaps it doesn’t?

It might be that it’s the other people working hard at their laptops in a coffee shop that are responsible for your improved performance. A recent study suggests that mental effort is contagious – simply being around people who are working hard is enough to make us work harder ourselves.

This discovery was made by sitting people who were doing different tasks next to each other. When one person’s task was more difficult, the person next to them worked harder too, even though they couldn’t see what was on their neighbour’s computer screen.

How this effect occurs isn’t clear, but it might be that we are influenced by subtle, unconscious cues such as a person’s body posture or breathing.

So instead of playing recordings of clinking cutlery and inane chatter at home to replicate the coffee shop effect, it might be more helpful to seek out an establishment filled with other people working hard – such as a student library.

If you’d prefer to work in the proximity of caffeine, it might be better to choose a cafe filled with people working, instead of one where the clientele is largely there to socialise.

As for the power of background noise, while it may be better than nothing, there is a wealth of evidence that suggests listening to music we enjoy is even better. Music that stimulates us seems to improve our cognitive abilities – and it doesn’t have to be classical music like Mozart .

Perhaps taking your headphones and laptop to the library is the best approach after all.

While technically any space with a table and WiFi could be an adequate setting for you to work or study, some coffee shops cater to a different clientele, such as groups or grab-and-go customers. While we don't suggest you wear your business professional clothes to the cafe, we do recommend you dress appropriately. You want to wear clothing you'll feel comfortable in for long periods, but you should also make sure you're looking presentable. If you're going to be using a cafe for a workspace frequently, dressing respectfully will show you appreciate the opportunity to use the space. Consider bringing a jacket as well, just in case the building has strong air conditioning.

3. Come Ready to Work

When are you most productive during the day? One benefit of working from home is that you may have flexibility in your daily schedule. We suggest getting your morning routine out of the way before you head to the cafe. Relax, have breakfast, exercise — cross off these daily to-dos, so you're in work-mode by the time you get to the coffee shop. 

4. Pick a Specific Seat

When you arrive at the coffee shop, find a seat where you can comfortably work without inconveniencing other customers or staff members. Keep your belongings relatively organized and contained in your area. Be mindful of how far the seat is from the nearest electrical outlet as well — having your power cord stretched across the cafe floor is dangerous and rude. 

5. Plan, Organize and Set a Limit

By the time you open up your laptop, you should already have an agenda for the duration of your stay. Before each cafe trip, plan what you need to accomplish and organize all the materials you need, so you're prepared to work as soon as you arrive. Try not to be too ambitious with your goals, though. The cafe may be busier than normal on any given day, which could lead to limited seating or distractions that prevent you from optimal productivity. 

Remaining flexible will help you form your schedule around external factors like noise or the number of other customers. Setting a limit is also essential for keeping yourself level-headed and relaxed during your visit. You'll accomplish more of your to-do list if you're in a clear and calm mindset rather than a chaotic one.

6. Learn How to Take Productivity Breaks

One of the best ways to be productive is to stop being productive. Taking breaks from studying and working is proven to lessen fatigue , enhance creativity and increase motivation. Just be sure not to take too many pauses, as that can bring your productivity to a halt.

9. Interact With Others on Occasion 

Chances are high you won't be the only individual studying or working remotely in the cafe. If you see others often occupying the same time slot as you, introduce yourself. This study location offers a great way to network with others who may be in similar classes or industries. It's another excellent reason why students study in coffee shops — these spots provide ample opportunity to meet others. 

Get to know your barista team as well. They'll be the faces you see most often. Knowing more than just their names will help you build a better working relationship with them.

10. Treat This Workspace Like Your Job Site

The worst thing you can do is approach working or studying in a coffee shop with the same social mindset you would when visiting the cafe with friends. When you arrive, treat this visit as if you were clocking in for a job. Stay on task, use your time wisely and refrain from becoming too distracted.

Although you may strike up a conversation with staff members or others sitting in the coffee shop, we caution that you shouldn't get too chatty. Others who are doing work at a coffee shop, reading for pleasure or simply enjoying a moment with their cup of joe may not be interested in distracting discussions. 

6. Be Respectful and Discrete With Your Business

If you're conducting business while working from a coffee shop, be respectful and discrete — to those around you and your employer and clients as well. For those who work from home, coffeeshops are shelters, places that an offer an escape from cramped living spaces, bad Internet connections, and where a lack of a caffeine offers no excuse for checking off tasks. Most coffeeshops have kept their doors closed since March 2020 — lingering inside a space isn’t wise during a pandemic, subjecting customers and staff to risk.

But as vaccines become more accessible, more coffeeshops are reopening at reduced capacity. Masks still have to be worn, unless customers are actively consuming food and drink. While it’s not time to return to the routine of spending all day at a cafe, grabbing a snack and getting a little work down seems like a more attainable desire.

With that in mind, these are a few cafes that are back open and with social distance rules in place.

As of March 2, Chicago restaurants are permitted to serve customers indoors with a 50 percent maximum capacity per room, or 50 people — whichever is fewer. Regardless, the state requires reservations for both indoor and outdoor dining. However, this should not be taken as an endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. For updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the city of Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard . Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.

Bond Coffee Collective

Family-friendly coffee shop and cafe Bond Coffee Collective is open for both indoor and outdoor service. Patrons can order a wide selection of coffee, espresso, and tea drinks, as well as light food options including toasts, salads, and pastries. There are 28 seats inside and another 16 outside. Bond Collective is also certified Cholov Yisroel , the highest level of kosher certification.

Grab something light, such as the chia-banana mash, or a more substantial meal, such as the Salvadoran corncake with a poached egg and queso fresco, while you work.

Kintsugi in the Eaton Hotel

If all the cafes in the District were featured in a high school yearbook, Kintsugi would definitely win “most likely to be Instagrammed.” Located in the new Eaton Hotel downtown, the cafe has mid-century modern digs and fashionable staff members in bomber jackets; the hotel includes a membership-based co-working space, a spa and wellness center, and a media hub complete with a recording studio, private cinema and rooftop music venue.

Kintsugi is named after the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Its menu focuses on gluten-free and vegan pastries and ayurvedic beverages such as a Golden Turmeric Latte and Chaga Elixir — a hot drink made from the adaptogenic mushrooms. The cafe will also soon be making fresh juices.

Tim Ma of Kyirisan , Eaton’s resident chef, says Kintsugi’s coffee partner, Red Rooster , has spent over a month on site training staff. “We worked hard to get the right feel for the space, from the layout to the design elements, such as ceramics and greenery,” Ma says.

Looks like a coffee shop but it's much more - excellent selection of food and drinks. When we were there there wasn't anyone who spoke English but we managed - had a lovely (recommended) ginger lemonade and a salad.

Put it simple, I reserve the hotel in proximity with this place THREE times in a row when I fly to Moscow. Its just amazing from pelmeni to potato blini with salmon .. I can go on for the whole menu list... The stuff is... just super friendly and effective. No matter what you'll try you will be back for more.. You can thank me later... More

Once you get to grips with Moscow you will come to realise just how stupidly expensive the Coffee Mania chain is. You can spend £4-5 just on a cup of normal tea. I wouldn't even pay that in London! When you realise that you can... get a tea in any other regular place for less than 25% of that price it makes you wonder how these places stay in business. In a Shokoladnitsa - a competitor chain, the cost is about half of this. I will not be coming back!! More

I visited it with my family for the lunch. The quality of dishes was middle, chairs was not so comfortable (I am quiet big, but it makes for children size). The cost was 8000 ruble (105 €) for 3 person without alcohol. So I could... not recommend it for the lunch, only for coffee short. More

This is more than just a coffee shop, the menu is quite large, good for lunch or dinner as well. It's situated right in front of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of music. Prices are on the high side and the food is good

I used to go to coffeemania for breakfast religiously every Sunday when I lived in Moscow 10 years ago. Every time I go back to Moscow I visit it and I am glad to see it is still good. The coffee although expensive by far... the best in town. The good is delicious and atmosphere is vibrant. Love it. More

This was a convenient place for us to go, but I must say that the price was the reason I would not go back. It's just a cafe with simple meals, charging 20 dollars for a plate of plain boiled alphabet pasta and some ketchup... is not very reasonable. The coffee is good there, but there is a different coffeeshop 3 minutes away we discovered, they charge half of that for a cup of coffee just as good. So obviously it's not the location surcharge. The food was good, they have a kids menu and nice spacious seating, but like I said, I wouldn't go back there. It's not a bad place, but there are others to chose from very nearby. More

The coffeemania combines old style services with a fresh and pimped menu. The famous Russian salads underwent a makeover and it tastes well. Service is great, menu is exhaustive and the food comes fast. One can only hope that the combination of service, good food... and atmosphere will remain once Moscow is on more Tourists agenda. There is not a massive choice of food here, but the drinks are plentiful and usually it stays open all day. Handy if you are looking for somewhere for coffee after a night out!

The Wren Coffee has been dubbed London’s prettiest coffee shop, and for good reason. Set in St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, the cafe features stained glass windows, high ceilings and lots of tables. It serves Caravan Coffee (some of the best in London), and pastries and sandwiches are available for breakfast and lunch. It’s especially well-suited for larger meetings due to the size and the impressive nature of the room, although the Wren is just as inviting for solo visitors. On Thursday afternoons, the cafe transforms into an events space for weekly religious talks, so plan your work day accordingly.

• Leman Locke Hotel, 15 Leman St, London E1 8EN

Set in the heart of Aldgate inside the Leman Locke Hotel, the original Shaman Coffee was designed as a co-working space for “creators and dreamers.” It’s a friendly spot serving coffee, juices and food, with particular attention to plant-based options. It opens early, at 7:30 a.m., making it a good choice for morning people (or anyone experiencing jet lag). Locke also runs the nearby Buckle Street Studios, an apartment hotel with a co-working space, which caters to business travelers who prefer a contemporary ambience. 

• 71 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3JA

There’s a plethora of seating at Redemption Roasters Holborn, a two-level coffee shop with a basement space that’s ideal for remote workers and meetings. It offers delicious coffee, as well as brunch, and during the warmer months there’s outdoor seating. Redemption, which has several other locations in London, is known for its social impact, with a mission to train roasters and baristas from the prison system. So not only is it a comfortable spot to spend a few hours working, but every beverage contributes to a good cause. In North London, the Hampstead Heath location is also a good bet for WFH.

• 74 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3JL

Attendant Coffee Roasters is one of London’s favorite coffee brands, with four coffee shops around town. The Shoreditch location is best for remote working, with a peaceful interior and a breakfast and lunch menu that will keep you satiated. It’s relatively small, so it’s ideal for a meeting or a few hours on your computer rather than a full day. The outposts in Clerkenwell and Mayfair are equally lovely and the original, a former Victorian restroom in Fitzrovia, is a fun brunch spot.  

• 183 Euston Rd., London NW1 2BE

Located near Euston Station, the Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library dedicated to exploring health and the human experience. The museum’s cafe, which serves food and drinks, is a well-kept secret when it comes to remote working. It welcomes laptops and encourages meet-ups, making it a great place to catch up on emails for a few hours. The museum is well-located for those catching a train from Euston or Kings Cross, or anyone staying in Marylebone or Bloomsbury.

• 4 Cromwell Pl, South Kensington, London SW7 2JE

If an elegant, sophisticated aesthetic is important to your workday motivation, snag a table at the Cromwell Place Café. Found inside Cromwell Place, a series of Kensington townhouses that host art exhibitions and events, the cafe is charming and quiet—and they specifically welcome solo working and meetings. It serves drinks alongside breakfast and lunch, and there’s also a dedicated aperitivo hour for when you’re ready to close your laptop. Arrive early to secure your table of choice. 

• Beech St, London EC1Y 4SB

The Barbican is an underrated WFH spot in general, with lots of cafes and quiet areas scattered throughout the vast complex of museums and art spaces. The best is the Barbican Cinema Café and Bar, set in the lobby of one of the Barbican’s movie theaters. The cafe offers coffee, as well as pastries and a lunch menu that’s served between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. It has an artsy, cool vibe (with a good playlist) and tends to attract remote workers looking for a calm space to write, answer emails or have a chat with a colleague. Elsewhere, visitors to the Barbican can find seats and tables around the Barbican’s lake or throughout its massive foyers.

• 213 Old St, London EC1V 9NR

Shoreditch Grind is one of London’s OG cool coffee shops, located on the buzzy Old Street roundabout. It has a circular façade and modern interior, with plenty of tables and counter seats for guests. On the weekends the coffee shop is a popular brunch spot (book in advance), but during the week, locals pop in for meetings or to work over a good latte. It’s not quiet, if that’s a concern, but it has a good energy that will keep you motivated throughout the day.

• 40 Blackfriars Rd, London SE1 8NY

Travelers and Londoners have long filled the Hoxton’s lobbies, transforming them into makeshift offices. The hip hotel brand smartly caught on to the trend and opened a co-working space in their Southwark location, which offers memberships and day passes. The sunny, plant-filled rooms, which have communal tables, boast bottomless coffees and teas, which means you’ll be fully fueled up. You can, of course, still stop by the hotel lobby, but the co-working space, dubbed From_Southwark, is a great option for visitors who really need to focus.

• 10 Argyle St, London WC1H 8EG

Design is king at the Standard, found across the street from St. Pancras station. The hotel’s Library Lounge, a former public library, is a cozy space that welcomes laptops before 6 p.m. (after that, it’s all about the DJ and cocktails). It’s especially great for writers and creatives as the space is filled with books that are organized by category, from philosophy to gardening. There are communal tables, sofas and chairs throughout, making it an easy place to focus or enjoy a coffee with a coworker.

• Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XX

The theaters and event spaces along London’s Southbank offer many places to work or read, including the cafes inside the National Theatre and BFI. But Southbank Centre’s Concrete Café is the hidden gem in the midst of the action. Offering views of the Thames, the cafe serves coffee and drinks along with pastries and sandwiches. There’s lots of seating, including tables, counters and benches, and the cafe extends into the foyer. In the evenings, it becomes a lively bar, effortlessly taking you from day to night.

At the heart of this cozy coffee shop lies a big sister's love for her little brother

The Science of Siblings is a new series exploring the ways our siblings can influence us, from our money and our mental health all the way down to our very molecules. We'll be sharing these stories over the next several weeks.

There's a coffee shop in the historic center of Charles Town, W.Va., where Libby Powell's family memorabilia hang from the exposed brick walls.

On one shelf, there's a photo of Libby posing with her towheaded baby brother. A jar of oatmeal-and-butterscotch cookies called Salty Siblings perches by the cash register. An elegant copper roaster parked in the shop's front bay window churns out the store's custom blends, including a popular one with Ethiopian beans named after that baby brother: The Benjamin.

Powell named this place Sibling Coffee Roasters — and it stands as a testament to one of her most cherished relationships.

Powell was already 14 and in high school when her brother, Benjamin Withem, was born 34 years ago. By that time she'd already thought a lot about the significance of having a sibling in her life. She knew, through intuition and experience, what the scientific research now shows: That this connection can deeply affect our mental and physical health over the course of our lives , for good or for ill.

"We have a human need to bond," she says. "Your friends are going to come and go. But when it's family, if your sibling is your friend, they're going to be there forever."

About 80% of children in the United States grow up with a sibling. It's a relationship that usually comes with shared experiences of family and childhood — and maybe also shared bedrooms and rivalries. Research about siblings' influence on our development and psychology is a relatively new field . But scientific studies show those relationships shape us in myriad ways, seen and unseen. And the impact of those relationships — good or bad — endures well beyond childhood, into middle age and beyond.

In adolescence, siblings are very influential when it comes to risk-taking behaviors that can include things like sex or substance abuse . Even in middle age, being on good terms with our siblings continues to strongly correlate with our mental and physical well-being, especially during life transitions like a divorce or caring for ailing parents. Late in life, siblings can help support one another to maintain their health and companionship, and recounting shared memories can be a powerful antidote to loneliness .

"Siblings matter. They matter above and beyond our parents. They matter above and beyond our peers," says Shawn Whiteman, who studies human development at Utah State University.

A sibling worth waiting for

On this bustling Saturday morning, Powell picks up a bag of The Benjamin off the shelves by the cash register and reads its label: "Sibling's brotherly love blend." It is mild, in keeping with her brother's personality, with a blueberry-like flavor. "I definitely wanted that to encompass what his taste for coffee is," she says.

Powell says she once experimented with a dark roast she called "The Sibling Rivalry," but it didn't fit any part of her ethos.

"I hated it," she says. "And I don't like to fight with my brother, so I decided — we're not going to carry a dark roast."

As a girl, Powell — a Baptist preacher's daughter — yearned to have a brother or sister, and her parents, Mike and Naysa Withem, tried to have more children.

When Libby Powell was about 2, they started taking in foster children. Those experiences were inevitably marked by disappointment, because for one reason or another they could not stay, says Naysa Withem.

The last foster child, an older boy named James, stayed for seven years, and Powell grew up thinking of him as her actual big brother, complete with all the skirmishes and antics that come with traditional siblings.

"I remember the arguments, and getting into trouble with him, and doing things with him that were sneaky," Powell says.

But when he was 16, her foster brother chose to leave the family, a decision that left a 10-year-old Powell devastated: "I was alone. It was like all eyes were back on me, and I didn't know what that felt like because I don't think I remember being an only child." His absence, and the sense of isolation, fed her desire for siblings.

Her parents, meanwhile, were trying to have another child. "I remember my mom had gotten pregnant and I was so excited," Powell recalls. "I remember that feeling and thinking, 'I'm gonna be a big sister.'"

It was not to be: Powell was with her mother when she miscarried. "That was traumatic," says Naysa Withem.

So when Baby Benjamin arrived two years later, his sister was waiting with open arms.

"I just remember just thinking: 'This is the prettiest baby I've ever seen in my life,'" she says, her voice rising with emotion. Her brother shuffles from around the counter in the shop's back kitchen and pulls her in for a tight hug.

Awash with gratitude that he was born alive and healthy, Powell says she doted on her brother like a doll, lathering him with lotions and changing his diapers and clothes.

Around the time Benjamin Withem was potty trained, Powell headed to college. Even though the time they overlapped in the same house was limited, her brother says he had developed a close connection with her that endured: "It's nice to always be reminded that you have these shared experiences that are constantly pulling you back together."

An evolving relationship

The study of sibling relationships and their influence on how we think or act hasn't been as studied as other family relationships — like those between mothers and children, for example. Researching siblings also isn't easy, because no two families are alike. Variations like gender, age gap, or the number of siblings can really matter, making comparisons between families difficult and conclusions harder to draw.

One classic example where that can get complicated is birth order — something popularly believed to have a great deal of influence on our personalities. While some earlier studies suggested it might have some impact, most research doesn't bear out the idea that birth order has any lasting significance on who we become, says Utah State's Whiteman.

Still, siblings are overall very influential because they're usually our first peers. We might idolize them or battle them, but either way, through them we learn how to relate to others.

"Peers, if you have too many conflicts with them, they are just not going to be your friend anymore, but siblings really can't get away from it," says Nicole Campione-Barr, a psychologist who researches family dynamics at the University of Missouri. "So it's really one of our only training grounds socially to understand how to handle conflict in effective ways."

Libby Powell, for example, recalls how her brother used her as a sounding board — especially in his teen years, and especially after he'd made a mistake.

"If he was going to be in trouble or if he made a bad decision, he came to me first — and he was feeling out what my reaction would be," she says.

"I think he was testing the waters," she says, before having to tell their parents.

Naysa Withem, who's been watching her two children reminisce as she cleans the shop's kitchen, chimes in with a correction: "He was hoping you would cushion that with mom and dad," she says with a laugh.

The dynamics between siblings often change in young adulthood, as they explore independent paths. That was true also for Ben Withem who, after college, took a cybersecurity job in the Middle East — a world away from his sister in Charles Town.

"That was definitely the most distance we've experienced," he says. And being that far was "almost like hitting the reset button" on their relationship, he says.

Powell found that "reset" difficult and says she felt angry. "I felt those same feelings when James left — when my foster brother left," she explains. At the same time, her brother had recently married, which meant Powell had to adjust to make room for another important person in his life. "That was hard for me because I'm sharing my little brother, who I thought that I had a little control over."

It was the only time they remember any tension existing between them. They had one fight, which culminated with Powell accepting her brother as an adult peer.

"He was taking a stand as an adult for the first time ... and I was put exactly where I needed to be put," Powell recalls, nodding approvingly toward her brother. Benjamin Withem, the more introverted sibling, agrees silently, deferring to her memory.

Through their adult lives, coffee played a big role in keeping them connected. Withem loved good coffee, and Powell says she relied on bad coffee for decades to get her through working overnight shifts as a nurse. He tried roasting beans in his popcorn popper; she eventually began following her younger brother's lead and upgraded to their current, kitchen-table-size industrial roaster.

Powell discovered she loved the taste of her own freshly roasted beans, as well as the coffee culture and social life that surrounded it.

"I just found that coffee — the way that he would describe it — it wasn't just a drink, but it was a relationship," she says.

When she opened Sibling Coffee Roasters five years ago, Powell saw it as a kind of extension of that relationship, a chance to share the warmth and support she associates with siblinghood. She says the shop connects her to the community she's lived in her whole life, and it gives her an excuse to talk to people about their lives and their troubles.

"I always wanted to feel cared for, and I always have felt that way," she says, "and I know that there's just way too many people out there that don't."

Sibling Coffee Roasters also reflects the dream that Benjamin Withem will eventually open up another shop as they grow old together.

It's a sentiment he shares, he says. "I see the name she picked as the open invitation."

Reliable paper-framed glasses are by far the most popular option for safely watching the total solar eclipse on Monday. But they’ve gotten more difficult to find in some places ahead of the event.

If you’ve checked everywhere — your local planetarium, public library and even online — fear not: There is still a way to watch the eclipse safely, using items around the house. Here are a few options.

Use your hands

Palms up, position one hand over the other at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly in a waffle pattern, and allow sunlight to stream through the spaces onto the ground, or another surface. During the eclipse, you will see a projection of the moon obscuring the surface of the sun.

This method works with anything with holes, such as a straw hat, a strainer, a cheese grater or even a perforated spoon. You will also notice this effect when light from the partially eclipsed sun streams through leaves on a tree.

Set up a cardstock screen

For this option, you need a couple of white index cards or two sheets of cardstock paper. First, punch a small hole in the middle of one of the cards using a thumbtack or a pin.

Then, facing away from the sun, allow light to stream through this pinhole. Position the second card underneath to function as a screen. Adjust the spacing between the two cards to make the projection of the sun larger or smaller.

Make a box projector

If you’re up for a bit of crafting, you can make a more sophisticated pinhole projector . Start with a cardboard box — empty cereal boxes are often used, but you can use a larger box, too. You’ll also need scissors, white paper, tape, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack.

Cut the piece of paper to fit the inside bottom of the cardboard box to act as a screen. Use tape to hold it in place.

On the top of the box, cut two rectangular holes on either side. (The middle should be left intact — you can use tape to secure this if needed.)

Tape a piece of aluminum foil over one of the rectangular cutouts. Punch a tiny hole in the middle of the foil with the tack or pin. The other cutout will serve as a view hole.

With your back to the sun, position the foil side of the box over your shoulder, letting light stream through the pinhole. An image of the sun will project onto the screen at the bottom of the box, which you can see through the view hole. A bigger box will create a bigger image.

Enjoy the show through any of these makeshift pinholes. And remember, during totality, you can view the sun directly with your naked eye. But you should stop looking at the sun as soon as it reappears.
