How do Frontier’s seat assignment fees work?

When you go to book a Frontier flight, you’ll have the option of picking a seat. The seat selection screen looks like this — the first few rows are sold at a premium price relative to the rows in the back.

You can choose one of these seats for the price listed. But you don’t have to. Just scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “Continue” button.

On the next page, you’ll get another prompt from Frontier asking you to confirm that you don’t want to select a seat. At that point you’ll choose the “No, thanks, I’ll take whatever” option.

What if I don’t pay for seat selection?

Not selecting a seat doesn't mean you won’t get one, it just means that Frontier will assign one to you at check-in or at the gate. This means you’re much more likely to get put in a middle seat, near the back.

So when deciding whether to pay for seat selection, ask yourself: Is the cost of selecting a seat worth it to avoid sitting in the middle? If not, you can skip it and save some cash.

Families who want to sit together might consider paying for seat selection to avoid getting split up, though gate agents will often work to keep families together.

What is Frontier stretch seating?

Most seats on Frontier Airlines flights have between 28 and 31 inches of pitch, which is the distance from the back of your seat to the back of the seat in front of you. That’s slightly below the average pitch of 30 to 31 inches found on other airlines.

Frontier Airlines stretch seating comes with an extra five to seven inches of pitch. These seats also recline, unlike the other seats, and they offer bigger tray tables. Frontier typically offers five or six rows of stretch seating on its aircraft, including the exit rows.

How much does Frontier Airlines stretch seating cost?

The cost of Frontier Airlines stretch seating depends on a couple of different factors, most notably how long the flight is and when you book. On some flights, stretch seating starts at $16 for each leg. On longer flights that you book later, this perk can cost well over $56. You'll have to check your individual flights for specific pricing as it varies by route and length.

If you have a connecting flight, you’ll need to pay for stretch seating for each leg of your flight.

If you want to pick any seat while flying on Frontier, you’re going to pay something, so take that into account when deciding if the stretch seating option is worth it for you.

If you’re planning on checking bags or bringing a carry-on, consider instead booking either the Works or the Perks bundles. These bundles include seat selection, bags and, in the case of the Works bundle, priority boarding, flight flexibility and refundability.

What about Frontier Airlines first class?

Since Frontier is a low-cost carrier, it doesn’t offer a first class option. If you’re looking for something better than a regular seat, you’ll want to purchase stretch seating when booking your flight.

You’ll get perks like more legroom, extra recline and early boarding.

How to get Frontier seat assignments for free

There are a couple of ways that you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for free.

1. Earn elite status

Frontier Elite 20K status lets you pick a seat for free and you can pick stretch seating for free when you check in. If you have Elite 50K or Elite 100K status, you can pick stretch seating for free when you buy the tickets and you get family seating, which allows up to eight passengers on the same reservation to pick any seat, including stretch seating, at the time of purchase.

2. Use credit card statement credits to offset Frontier seat fees

Another way you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for (sort of) free is to use airline incidental credits from an American Express card. These cards pay you back (in the form of a statement credit) when you purchase certain airline incidentals, including seat selection, up to a certain limit every year. It is important to note that the charge must be classified as seat selection and not an upgrade to get the credit. Terms apply.

Most Frontier Airlines tickets do not include complimentary seat assignments. This means you have two options: Pay for a seat or skip seat selection. By skipping seat selection, you might get stuck in a middle seat or separated from your party — but it’s free. Frontier also offers “stretch seating” with extra legroom for an extra charge.

You can select your seat on Frontier, but it will cost you. You always have the option to skip Frontier Airlines seat selection for free.

Frontier Airlines is a low-cost airline, so it follows the standard low-cost strategy when it comes to fares. Frontier advertises a basic ticket that covers your flight and a personal item — that’s it. Anything else is an added fee.

Frontier offers 3 options for ticketing:

Basic Fare: Frontier’s basic fare is just that: basic.   This option covers getting you from Point A to Point B in a standard seat with 1 personal item.

Frontier’s the WORKS and the PERKS   options are “bundles.” What’s a bundle, you ask?

Frontier conveniently bundles extras together and offers them to you at a discounted rate in 2 different tier options.

The WORKS is Frontier’s top-tier bundle . The cost starts at $59 one-way  and varies by route; it’s also based on a round-trip purchase.

This option includes the following benefits at a discount of at least 50% vs. adding selections à la carte:

• The ability to refund your ticket
• No change fees
• Seat selection
• 1 carry-on bag included
• 1 checked bag included
• Priority boarding

The WORKS can only be purchased at the time of booking. If you want this bundle, don’t miss it the first time around!

Frontier Baggage and Other Fees and Add-ons

Since Frontier is a low-cost airline that lists fares accordingly, you can expect some extra fees related to your trip, unless, of course, you’re the type who can fly comfortably in any seat with only a personal item.

Instead of hiding the add-ons, Frontier gladly explains why it keeps fares so low — to give customers a choice: “You only pay for what’s important to you.”

If you purchased the WORKS or the PERKS bundle, you already have 1 carry-on bag and 1 checked bag included in the cost.   If you didn’t purchase either bundle, you can expect to incur higher  baggage fees .

Baggage fees increase the closer you get to boarding , so you should purchase your allowance as soon as possible (ideally, at booking).

If you purchase a carry-on bag, you’ll automatically gain Zone 1 boarding. 

Size/Weight Limits:  Frontier has the following size and weight limitations for each type of baggage:

• Personal: 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45.72 x 35.56 x 20.32 cm)
• Standard: 24 x 16 x 10 inches (60.96 x 40.64 x 20.32 cm) and no heavier than 35 pounds (15.88 kg)
• Checked: Must adhere to max linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm) and a max weight of 40 pounds (18 kg)

If your baggage is overweight, oversized, or both, expect to pay additional fees per flight.

Seat Selection:  Frontier encourages all passengers to choose their seats at the time of booking. If you purchased the WORKS or the PERKS bundle, you will not have to pay an additional fee for seating.

If you purchased a Basic Fare and didn’t pay to choose your seat, Frontier will assign you a seat from what’s left at check-in.

Frontier makes no guarantees about seating your party together if you don’t prepurchase seats.

For Frontier elite members, seat assignment fees are waived and upgrades to Stretch seating are free if available at the time of check-in. 

Call Center Reservations:  $35 per passenger for bookings made through the call center

Paper Receipt/Itinerary:  Undisclosed amount; Frontier reports a fee will be charged for any paper itineraries or receipts by mail.

Itinerary Change: If you change your flight 60+ days prior to departure, you will incur no costs to do so. If you need to change your flight 59 to 7 days prior to departure, you will incur a reduced fee of $49 per passenger. If you need to cancel or change your flight 6 days or less prior to departure, you will incur the normal fee of $99 per passenger. Frontier has 3 seat types on its planes, Standard, Premium, and UpFront Plus. Seat pitch and width vary slightly depending on which plane you’re on, but it can get pretty tight! Additionally, these seats do not recline.

• Premium (all planes): 36″ pitch (rows 1 to 3), 38″ pitch (row 13), about 18″ width
• Standard A320 (V1 and V2): 28″ to 29″ pitch, 17″ to 19″ width
• Standard A321 (V1 and V2): 28″ to 29″ pitch, 16.5″ to 19″ width

UpFront Plus is a relatively new seating configuration that mimics the European business class model with the middle seat blocked.

Most Frontier Airlines seats have very tight pitch — actually, the tightest in the airline industry (see table below).

When you combine a 28- to 29-inch pitch with a 16.5-inch width as experienced on some A321 seats, it makes for a pretty tight fit. Plus, most of the seats have tiny tray tables.

Since Frontier is a low-cost airline, many of the inflight amenities passengers have come to expect on other more popular airlines are absent:

• Frontier does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, video streaming capabilities, or any type of onboard entertainment at this time.
• Refreshment service is limited to paid beverages and snacks only.
• Frontier does not have electrical outlets onboard for passenger/commercial product use.

Frontier Airlines Customer Satisfaction

Are people happy with their Frontier flights? That depends.

Of course, there are numerous complaints due to the general lack of research into what you actually get for your money with a low-cost airline. Anyone who knows the basic low-cost structure will know to expect extra costs (or a pared-down experience).

Frontier openly advertises how it’s able to keep its fares low, so there shouldn’t be any surprises. However, it is a bit tough to calculate what your total cost is going to be until you reach the final steps in your booking process.

In December 2023, the last full month of data collected, Frontier canceled 76 flights, delayed 910 flights, and diverted 22 flights (likely due to weather). Also, 3,335 bags were mishandled.

Here’s how Frontier Airlines stacks up on popular rankings and rating systems:

Frontier Airlines has a 7/7 safety record as awarded by  AirlineRatings.com . The rating considers whether the airline has an IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification and combines government and crash records along with information from the World’s Aviation Governing Body.

In terms of performance, the February 2024 Air Travel Consumer Report states that for 2023, Frontier Airlines was on time 66.99% of the time.

This places Frontier in last place out of 10 airlines in terms of On-Time Performance (OTP). In comparison, the top airline was Hawaiian, arriving on time 94.07% of the time.

Regardless of poor OTP and decreased customer satisfaction scores, Frontier Airlines has received a couple of notable awards:

• Federal Aviation Administration’s Diamond Award for Maintenance Excellence – 2016
• International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) – The Industry’s Most Fuel Efficient Airline

On many lists, Frontier sits right down at the bottom (alongside fellow low-cost carrier Spirit) as one of the worst airlines out there.

Is this mainly due to complaints surrounding low transparency with tons of added fees? Or is it more serious than that, concerning worsening customer satisfaction in regards to flight problems (delays and cancellations) and baggage handling?

Either way, the chance you’ll be satisfied with your Frontier flight seems like a toss-up, and it likely depends on your personality and expectations.

If you like all the perks included with your ticket, plan to check a couple of bags, and want a comfortable flight in terms of seating, then Frontier is not for you unless you plan to pay quite a bit more than its advertised base fares.

However, if you’re not bothered by a bare-bones flight, don’t have bags to check, and are OK with some customer satisfaction hiccups, then you could certainly score a pretty cheap flight from Frontier.

Please be advised of the following new and updated screening procedures for carry-on bags, issued by the Department of Homeland Security/Transportation Security Administration (DHS/TSA).

For all domestic and international travel,   the following items must be removed   from carry-on bags and placed into separate bins for X-ray screening:

• Electronics larger than a cell phone
• Liquids – please note that the 3-1-1 rule still applies

Customers may also be asked to remove  food and snacks, including any type of food or drink in powdered form.

Personal electronic devices on international flights

Personal electronic devices (PEDs) larger than a cell phone are required to be removed from carry-on bags for flights traveling to the United States from international destinations.

While customers are still allowed to bring personal electronic devices on board, increased and extensive security screenings that may include interviews will be conducted in accordance with this mandated DHS/TSA security directive.

Powders on international flights

Customers traveling to the United States from international destinations may be subject to additional screening if carrying powders.

Effective as of June 30, 2018,   new security measures now limit the quantity of substances in powder form in the aircraft cabin. As a general rule, a customer   will not be allowed to carry on powders in a quantity exceeding that of a typical soda can (350ML/12 Fluid OZ).   To avoid having these items taken during security screening, it is recommended that all powders be placed in checked bags.

There are some exceptions, including baby formula, prescribed medications, and crematory containers. For more information, please visit the   DHS website .

Seat Assignments

You may pay to select your seat assignment at the time of ticket purchase. The purchase of a  bundle may include a seat assignment. If you’ve already purchased your ticket, you may purchase a seat assignment on your Manage Booking page through logging into My Trips or when you check-in online within 24 hours of departure. Same-Day Flight Changes

Standby travel.

Frontier offers Elite level members of FRONTIER Miles  the opportunity to stand by for an earlier or later flight on your day of travel for no fee. 

If you are eligible for standby travel, you may request to fly standby on another flight on your day of travel at the airport ticket counter or gate.

Standby travel on eligible tickets must follow the original ticketed itinerary, meaning if you were booked on a nonstop flight you cannot add a connection to the itinerary or vice versa.

Flying standby involves risk. If you are unable to get on the desired flight and miss the flight for which you were scheduled to fly, no additional transportation will be due unless you purchase a ticket. The order in which those standing by for a flight are boarded will be as determined by Frontier.

Same Day Confirmed Flight Changes

If you wish to change to an earlier flight on your day of travel, please review our policy here . An airport agent can assist with changing your flight, subject to seat availability. A same-day change fee and any difference in fare and options prices will apply.

Name Changes

• Frontier’s decision to refuse transport to a customer for any of the reasons stated in Section 3 (Refusal to Transport) of the  Frontier Contract of Carriage  or as otherwise provided therein.

Unaccompanied Minor Travel

Effective November 1, 2018, Frontier Airlines will no longer accept children traveling alone under the age of 15 yrs of age.  Any child under the age of 15 must be in the same reservation as an accompanying adult.

Taxes and Fees

If you want to know about the Fees and Taxes included in the price of your airfare, here’s a quick and handy guide that covers most of our destinations. Not all fees and taxes apply to all fares, but we’ll quote you the total – inclusive of the applicable taxes and fees -- for your ticket.

U.S. Transportation Tax (domestic FET): airfares for travel within the 48 contiguous states include a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax (FET).

Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs): these charges are from the airports themselves, and are applied to the operations of those airports. The charge ranges in value and is set by the airport.

U.S. September 11th Security Fee: the Transportation Security Administration assess a September 11th Security Fee per passenger enplanement.

U.S. Domestic Flight Segment Tax: the US government taxes each passenger and each ‘segment’ (basically, every take-off).

Carrier Interface Charge: the standard fare price we display online includes a charge per passenger, per segment, that is assessed on tickets purchased through the website or our call center. The Discount Den fares we display online include a charge per passenger, per segment, that is assessed on tickets purchased through the website.

Service Fee: for each ticket booked through our Reservations Department there will be a Service Fee which is calculated per passenger.

APHIS User Fee Passenger (international arrivals): This fee is levied by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) for international arrivals.

Immigration User Fee and Customs User Fee (international arrivals): These fees are levied by the United States Customs and Border Protection for international arrivals.

Mexico Tourism Tax (Derecho No Immigrante) and Mexico Departure Tax - TUA: these taxes are levied on passengers flying to and/or from Mexico on international flights, and differs depending on the airport.

Surcharges: The fare price we display online includes a charge per passenger, per direction, that is assessed on tickets to cover costs of providing a service including facility maintenance, fuel, security etc . These surcharges appear during peak holiday travel periods such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

High Cost Airport Charge:  The High Cost Airport Charge offsets Frontier’s higher operating costs in select major airports where, for example, landing fees and gate rentals are significantly higher than other major airports where Frontier operates.

Review and Tips for Flying Frontier Airlines

I ’ve been fascinated by discount airlines as they have grown in popularity. Flying can often be very expensive, and the low rates these discount airline carriers offer can be incredibly tempting. For my recent trip to Orlando International Airport , I decided to fly Frontier Airlines from Boston. Here is my review and my tips for flying Frontier Airlines.

Overview of Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines, headquartered in Denver, Colorado, is a low-cost airline. Travelers can get a great rate on various flights in the US, the Dominican Republic, Canada (Calgary), and Mexico, but without some of the perks included in the airfare. Instead, you’ll be able to purchase these add-ons as needed.

Where Does Frontier Airlines Fly?

Frontier flies from many major United States cities, as well as Calgary Canada, Montego Bay Jamaica, Punta Cana Dominican Republic, and several Mexican cities. Keep in mind these destinations are always subject to change.

US cities include Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver International Airport, Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Boston Logan International Airport , Orlando International Airport, Chicago O’Hare, Buffalo, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and many more. See their website for specific cities and routes offered.

What’s Included in Your Frontier Airlines Flight

As an ultra-low-cost carrier, Frontier offers a low base fare that doesn’t include any perks. You’ll need to purchase the following if you want them included:

• Carry-on bag (a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you is included)
• Seat assignment
• Checked bags

You’ll also have to purchase any snacks or beverages that you’d like to enjoy on the flight. Complimentary items are not offered. Frontier flights do not have WiFi or inflight entertainment.

The biggest difference between Frontier and other major airlines is the fee to bring on a carry-on bag. Although that has changed in recent years as other airlines have started offering fares that do not include the carry-on. Those travelers who have paid for the carry-on bag will be in zone one.

That’s how airline employees can keep track of who has paid and who hasn’t. You’ll also have the purchase of your carry-on bag printed on your boarding pass.

When purchasing your flight, you’ll have the option to add on various bundles that include these perks. If you are going to use them, this is a great way to save money.

The Works Bundle

The Works Bundle is only offered when you are purchasing your flight. It includes everything you’ll potentially need on your flight (except for in-flight food and beverage). This includes a seat assignment (you can even choose the stretch seating option), a carry-on bag, a checked bag, priority boarding, refundability, and no change fees.

The Perks Bundle

The Perks Bundle has everything that the works bundle includes, except for the refundability and no change fees. That bundle is offered during and after you originally bought your flight.

You can also purchase the various add-ons a la carte. The prices do change depending on when you purchase them. It’s cheapest to buy them when you book your flight and most expensive to purchase them with an agent at the airport check-in counter or as you board.

On-Board Purchases

Frontier does not offer complimentary snacks and beverages as other major airlines offer. However, you’ll be able to individually purchase items that you want.

There are various bundles available onboard that can help you save money. These include packages with 2 nonalcoholic drinks and 2 snacks, as well as bundles with alcoholic beverages.

Discount Den

The Discount Den is a program that is offered through Frontier Airlines. Discount Den members pay an annual fee and then have access to special rates as well as the Frontier Airlines kids fly free program. If you frequently fly on Frontier, this may be worth looking into.

Frontier Airlines Kids Fly Free

Discount Den members will have access to the kid’s fly-free program. On select flights, Discount Den members can get a free kids’ ticket for kids aged 14 or younger. You’ll need to check specifically for the designation because not all flights are “kids fly free” flights.

Like other airlines, Frontier offers a credit card and a frequent flyer program. These can be a great way to accumulate points to get free flights – especially if you are someone who will be flying on the airline regularly.

As mentioned above, I had a voucher for my flight on Frontier. I decided to use it for my flight to Orlando over Columbus Day weekend when rates were pretty high from Boston. I was able to get a great rate on Frontier.

When I made my purchase online, I decided to purchase The Works bundle. I knew that I’d have a checked bag, and decided to include the carry-on. While it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly what you plan to bring with you in advance, purchasing these items with your flight can help you save money.

I’m also pretty picky about where I sit on the plane, so I was glad to have the seat assignment included in the Works bundle I purchased. I was able to get a stretch seating seat, which was located in the exit row.

If you are flying Frontier out of Boston Logan, it’s important to note that these flights leave out of Terminal E, which is typically the international terminal. I had checked in at home, so I was able to head right to the baggage drop-off desk. Then I went to security.

As the international terminal, Terminal E at Logan doesn’t typically offer TSA Precheck . I had “precheck” printed on my boarding pass, and the TSA officer stamped the pass so that I didn’t have to remove my shoes.

However, it was one line for regular security and TSA Precheck. So keep that in mind when arriving at the airport because you may need to plan for a long wait.

Boarding on Frontier was very easy. I was in zone 1, and they had us line up in advance of boarding. I headed on the flight, placed my carry-on in the overhead, and then sat in my roomy seat. While the Frontier seats have fewer frills (smaller carry-on trays and less padding), my seat was very comfortable.

We arrived early at Orlando International Airport, and I was quickly able to exit the aircraft. Because many of the passengers don’t have carry-on bags in the overheads, I found that exiting the plane was a quicker and easier process than I’m used to.

While I was on the plane, I read some of the information in the seat pocket in front of me. In it, Frontier explains that they are able to be more fuel-efficient with the decreased amount of baggage and frills on the plane.

Overall, I had a great experience on my flight and will definitely book another flight on Frontier in the future.

Tips for Flying Frontier Airlines

There are some easy ways to improve your experience – especially if you can plan in advance. Here are our top tips for flying Frontier Airlines.

Purchase any perks and extras in advance. While it can be a little challenging to decide what types of bags you’ll need, you’ll save money on your advance purchase. A bundle purchase can be a good value if you are going to use everything included.

Minimize the number of bags you bring with you to save money. Make good use of your personal item by bringing the maximum size possible (a backpack within the size limit is a good option). Check the size limit before you pack – it’s currently  14″H X 18″W X 8″D including handles, wheels and straps, and will be checked.

Download entertainment to your personal device or bring along a book. There’s no onboard entertainment so you’ll need something with you.

Purchase snacks and/or beverages at the airport so you won’t have to buy them on board. You can even save money by refilling an empty reusable water bottle at the airport and bringing some snacks with you.

If you are traveling with others and want to make sure you are seated together, it’s worth buying seat assignments when you purchase your flight. Don’t expect others to move to accommodate your group, because people often purchase a seat assignment because they have a specific seat that they want.

Calculate your total cost (including any extras) before booking your flight to make sure you are still getting a good deal. Seriously consider any add-on to make sure that you need it.

Are airlines required to seat families together? Guide to airline family seating policies

As a mom of three, I'm no stranger to the ins and outs of flying with family .

I know how to disassemble and reassemble my double stroller with ninja-level precision so it will fit through the baggage scanner at security. I also throw screen time rules out the window on travel days. Most importantly, I don't take any chances when it comes to getting my family's seats together when we fly.

Because I know how turbulent flying with kids can be, I happily gave up my seat on a recent solo flight when a father asked if I would switch seats so he could sit with his young son.

I was also quick to say yes because he had a window seat a couple of rows in front of my own window seat. (Had he been in the middle seat, I might have needed an adult beverage thrown in to sweeten the deal, but I digress.)

The crux of the issue is that it can be costly and confusing to find seats together when traveling with young kids. Some parents assume they will automatically be seated with their kids. Others may end up separated from their families if they are rebooked due to a cancellation. Regardless of the reason, airlines are not legally required to seat families together.

In November 2022, the Department of Transportation began monitoring airline seating policies to determine if federal regulation was necessary regarding family seating.

After months of monitoring, the DOT launched an online dashboard that displays, among other things, which airlines guarantee free family seating. This is part of a larger initiative by the Biden administration to improve consumer protections in the airline industry.

So far, only three airlines – American Airlines , Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines – comply with the DOT's guideline that airlines guarantee "adjacent seats for children 13 and under and an accompanying adult at no additional cost for all fare types."

That doesn't mean you are completely out of luck in guaranteeing your family sits together if you are flying on another major airline. Here is a guide to each airline's family seating policy and tips for ensuring your family members can sit together on your next flight.

American Airlines

Like most major airlines, American allows you to choose your seats when booking or at any time leading up to your flight.

There is no fee to choose your seats if you book a first-class, business-class, premium economy or main cabin fare. However, you will have to pay a fee to choose your seats if you choose basic economy tickets — American's least expensive (and most restrictive) fare type.

If you're traveling with children under 15 on any fare type, American's system will detect that you are a family traveling together and automatically search for seats together if you don't choose them yourself. If adjacent seats are unavailable for your entire family, American guarantees children under 15 will be seated next to at least one adult.

It's important that you do everything in your power to choose seats for your entire family at the time of booking. This is the only way to guarantee your entire family will sit together during your flight.

To do this, American advises the following :

• Book your entire party's tickets in the same reservation.
• Book your tickets as early as possible, so there are more available seats to choose from.
• It's better to skip seat selection than to choose just a few seats or seats scattered throughout the cabin.

Alaska Airlines

To select your seats at the time of booking on an Alaska flight, you'll need to book either a first-class, premium or main-cabin ticket. Only a limited number of advance seating assignments are available to customers who purchase Alaska's Saver fare tickets.

If no advance seats are available, the seats will be assigned at the gate; this is not ideal for a family wishing to sit together.

The good news is that Alaska Airlines' family seating policy does guarantee that children under 14 will automatically be seated with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge, including on Saver fares. So, even if you can't find adjacent seats for your entire family, you can rest assured that your children won't be seated separately from an adult.

To guarantee your family sits together on an Alaska Airlines flight :

• Book as early as possible and reserve your family's seats together at the time of purchase.
• Book children on the same reservation as adults.
• Confirm seat selections made through third parties on Alaska Airlines' website or by speaking with a reservations agent by phone.
• If you cannot get reserved seats together with your family during booking, call an Alaska Airlines reservation agent to review available seating options.
• As a last resort, check in online exactly 24 hours before your flight, as this is when most unclaimed seats become available (does not apply to Saver fare seats, which are assigned at the gate on the day of departure).
• Arrive at the gate at least 60 minutes prior to your departure time and speak with a gate agent. Alaska does block a limited number of seats to accommodate families and other needs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Delta Air Lines

All but one of Delta's fare types allow you to select your seats when you purchase your tickets.

If you want your family to sit together, steer clear of Delta's basic economy fares because they do not include advanced seat selection. If you purchase first class, Comfort+ or main cabin tickets, you'll have the option to select your seats during the booking process.

Delta's has other tips for getting your family's seats together :

• Book children on the same reservation as the adults in your party.
• Confirm seat selections made through third parties by calling a Delta reservations agent or going online .
• If you cannot obtain seats together with your family, contact Delta by phone to review your options or, as a last resort, speak with a Delta gate agent at the airport.

Delta does try and seat family members together but only upon request.

Flight attendants will sometimes ask for volunteers to switch seats. The airline also blocks a handful of rows in the main economy cabin on most flights to accommodate groups and families. Still, there are no guarantees unless you reserve your family's seats together before arriving at the airport (preferably at the time of booking).

Frontier Airlines

Frontier's base fares can be alluring to budget-conscious flyers. However, you'll have to pay extra if you want the luxury of advanced seating assignments.

Luckily, Frontier updated its family seating policy to be in compliance with the DOT's recommendations and guarantees that children under age 14 will be seated automatically with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge.

Unless you have elite status with Frontier , seat selection fees run between $17 and $90 per passenger per flight segment. There are no fare types that include complimentary seat selection for non-elite members if you want your entire family to sit together.

However, you could potentially make up the extra cost by joining Frontier's Discount Den and choosing a Kids Fly Free flight .

Frontier also recommends that families:

• Book as early as possible and purchase advance seat reservations at the time of booking.
• Book children on the same reservation as adults in your party.
• If you book through a third party, visit Frontier's website as soon as possible to purchase advance seat selections.
• Check in as early as possible online or through Frontier's mobile app and Frontier will assign group seats together if any are available.
• If your family is not assigned seats together, speak with a gate agent for assistance.

JetBlue offers complimentary seat selection with all fare types except Blue Basic, meaning Blue and Blue Extra fares include free advance seat selection. However, for Blue Basic fares, there is a fee of between $5 and $40 each way to choose your seat more than 24 hours before departure (Seat selection is available for free at check-in).

With JetBlue's family seating policy , however, the airline guarantees that children ages 13 and younger will be seated next to at least one adult traveling with them on the same reservation without an additional fee. This applies to all fare types, including Blue Basic fares. At the time of booking, JetBlue's system will assign seats together for at least one accompanying parent as long as adjacent seats are still available when you book your flight.

Other tips from JetBlue :

• Book as early as possible for maximum seat selection availability.
• Confirm seat selections made through a third party on JetBlue's website.
• If you cannot obtain seats together at the time of booking, contact a JetBlue agent at check-in or talk to one at the gate. They will do their best to seat your family together.

JetBlue does its best to keep families together and blocks a limited number of rows until the day of travel for passengers with disabilities and unaccompanied minors . If any seats are available after accommodating these passengers, JetBlue may be able to use them to seat families together.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is the one airline on this list that does not assign seats in advance, so you cannot purchase a specific seat assignment ahead of time.

With Southwest's open seating policy , you will be assigned a boarding group (A, B or C) and a position within that boarding group (1 through 60-plus) at check-in. Essentially, A1 is the best boarding position and you'll have the most seating options available to you when you board the plane.

Because of this, the strategies for getting your family's seats together on a Southwest flight differ from other airlines.

Check in on time

To get as high of a boarding group as possible, you'll need to check in exactly (like, to the second) 24 hours prior to your flight. This should land your family in an A or B boarding group, and most of the time, you won't have an issue getting your family's seats together. You may have to venture to the back of the plane to find those seats, though.

Utilize family boarding

If you have a B or C boarding group and are traveling with a child 6 years old or younger, you will have the option to board between the A and B groups during "family boarding."

Southwest's policy states that up to two adults can board with a child age 6 or younger during family boarding. If you have more adults than this in your party, speak with a Southwest gate agent to determine your best strategy for finding seats together once on board.

Purchase EarlyBird Check-In or Upgraded Boarding

You can also purchase EarlyBird Check-In , which gives you the convenience of automatic check-in 36 hours before your flight. (Southwest's regular check-in process begins 24 hours prior to your flight.) This means you'll automatically receive an earlier boarding position and more available seats to choose from than if you'd done it yourself.

EarlyBird Check-In pricing starts at $15 per passenger per flight segment, and you must purchase it for everyone in your party. Depending on availability, you may also be able to purchase Upgraded Boarding at the gate for between $30 and $50 per person per flight segment to secure an A1-A15 boarding position.

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card holders can receive two EarlyBird Check-Ins per year, which can bring the total cost for your family down a bit. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card also has a benefit of four Upgraded Boardings per year.

Rapid Rewards A-List and A-List Preferred members (and those traveling on the same reservation) automatically receive a boarding position 36 hours prior to departure, though you will still need to check in within 24 hours of your flight to receive your boarding pass.

Buy a Business Select fare

Finally, you have the option to purchase a Business Select fare, which, among other perks, includes priority boarding in the A1-A15 group.

Speak with an agent

If you don't heed our advice and find yourself at the airport with a less-than-desirable boarding group, Southwest advises that you speak with a gate agent or flight attendant. They will see if any passengers are willing to move to accommodate your family if you aren't able to get seats together.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines keeps its family seating advice plain and simple: The only way to guarantee you'll be able to sit with your family is to purchase your seat assignments ahead of time.

Seat assignments start at $5 per person per segment and vary by route and seat location in the aircraft. You can purchase your seat assignment when you book your flight, during check-in or anytime in between. However, the earlier you choose the seats, the better chance your entire family will be able to sit together.

Spirit currently has no official family seating policy. It only states that it "can't guarantee that you'll sit with your friends and family" if you don't purchase seat assignments; it says that gate agents will work to provide adjacent seats for guests flying with children aged 13 and under whenever possible.

There are ways to save money when purchasing your seats, though. Spirit Saver$ Club members receive low fares and discounted prices for add-ons like bags and seats. There is an annual fee, but if you have a large family or plan on flying Spirit Airlines often, the cost may be less than purchasing seats for your entire group.

Speaking of frequent flying, members of Spirit's Free Spirit loyalty program at the Gold level receive, among other perks, free seat selection at the time of booking. Unlike Frontier's program, Spirit's elite status perks, such as seat selection, do not confer to other members on the reservation.

United Airlines

United is also among the few airlines committed to helping families sit together on flights. United's family seating policy guarantees families with children under age 12 in certain cabins can sit together for free, regardless of fare type.

Now, United's new "dynamic seat map feature" will enable passengers to book two seats together for travelers under 12 and an adult companion for free, including on basic economy fares.

You'll probably want to avoid basic economy on United if you want your party to stay together. United explicitly states on its website that it's not able to guarantee your entire party will be able to sit together if you purchase a basic economy fare and do not purchase advance seat assignments.

Here are a few more helpful tips for families flying United :

• Book your tickets as early as possible and reserve your family's seats together when booking.
• Confirm seat selections made through a third party.
• If only scattered seats are available at the time of booking, you are better off letting United's system automatically choose seats for you because it will attempt to seat families on the same reservation with unassigned seats together.
• If you do not select seats in advance, United's system will attempt to find adjoining seats for you and your children under 15 on the same reservation, regardless of fare type.
• If you cannot obtain seats together, arrive early at your departure gate and speak with a gate agent. They will ask for volunteers to move seats and help accommodate your family.

General tips

There is a lot of overlap with the guidance for getting your family's seats together on most U.S. airlines (with Southwest being the exception).

You want to do everything possible to:

• Book early and select seats when you book. Do not wait until the last minute to check your seat assignments.
• Avoid saver or basic fares because they often do not offer complimentary seat selection.
• Choose your family's seats when booking, whether it's included with your fare or you have to pay an additional fee.
• If you are unable to get your family's seats together at the time of booking, call the airline and speak with a reservations agent to determine the best course of action.
• Keep checking seat availability in the months and weeks leading up to your flight, especially in the final week before your trip and again 24 hours before your flight. These are the times when people make last-minute changes or elite flyers receive automatic seat upgrades, freeing up space on the seating map.
• If you arrive at the airport and still haven't been able to secure your family's seats together, politely ask a gate agent or flight attendant for help. You may still have the option to pay for an upgrade, or they can assist you by finding open seats. It may be too late to do anything official, but they'll be much more willing to help if you approach them with kindness.

Bottom line

Sometimes kind travelers will help parents who end up in a bind onboard, but there's no guarantee. Luckily, airlines are falling in line and making it easier for families traveling together to sit together.

The basics of how to get a good seat on Frontier

My plan on how to get a good seat on Frontier was hatched after noticing and reading reports that when Frontier starts assigning seats when people check in at the 24 hour period, they start at the back of the plane and assign those seats.  So (the theory went), you could get a good seat on Frontier by delaying your check-in until the last possible moment.

But…. would it work?  I had a recent flight on Frontier so resolved to test my theory on how to get a good seat on Frontier.  I was flying by myself, so didn’t have to worry about flying with my family

Did my plan on how to get a good seat on Frontier work?

I had a 9:30 a.m. flight on Frontier – here’s how my seat map looked at 9:30 the day before (T-24 hours)

Still plenty of seats available – and then here’s a larger view of what it looked like at 5pm the night before (T-16 hours before flight)

Tragically, I had to wake up at 3:45 a.m. in order to catch my ride up to Denver (the person driving the car had a much earlier flight), but here’s what the seatmap looked like then (T-6 hours).

Still plenty of good seats left and you can see Frontier filling up the plane from the rear.  Would my plan to get a good seat on Frontier work?

I just hung out in the Denver airport for a bit – at 6:21, 3 hours before takeoff, here’s what we looked like.

At 7:50 a.m. (90 minutes before takeoff), we were down to 5 exit row seats, 4 front of the plane seats, and 2 back of the plane windows.  I was just hanging out in the airport, working on some blog posts and monitoring my seatmap.  One important distinction is that I couldn’t go through security yet because I didn’t have a boarding pass, which was mildly annoying.

8E went next, and then 10D just after 8 a.m.  A few minutes later, the other 2 seats in row 10 went.  That left us 5 exit row seats and 2 window seats in the back.  At this point, I was feeling pretty good about my odds to get a good seat on Frontier for free.

30A (one of the 2 window seats in the back) was filled at 8:11 a.m., and then 12A, B and C at 8:19 a.m., leaving only 3 seats left.

The downsides to this plan to get a good seat on Frontier

It’s at this point I should point out 2 of the risks of this plan to get a good Frontier seat without paying.  I’ve already mentioned that you don’t get a boarding pass until you check-in, so you’re stuck behind security.  Also, Frontier has a HARD deadline of checking in 60 minutes before flight time online or through a kiosk or 45 minutes at the counter.  If you miss that deadline ( even by a minute ), you will MISS your flight

The second risk of this plan is that if the flight is oversold, you run the risk of being denied boarding.  In my case, I was okay running that risk because I was flying by myself and also had nowhere to be the whole day.  Plus, I could check by trying to buy a ticket that there were still seats available to purchase.

In any case, I had finally decided I’d waited enough, and I was hungry for an omelet at the Priority Pass DEN lounge – the Timberline Steak House , so I checked in.

Naturally I got seat 30E 😀

Still, I was happy with my seat – it was a completely full flight and I was glad to not have to sit in a middle seat, even if I was further back than I wanted to be.  The flight was late, which I knew because I used my handy trick to determine if your flight is going to be delayed . As I was boarding, I asked the guy in 10D (one of the last seats to be assigned) when he had checked in.  He said he checked in that morning and did not PAY for a seat.

So it seems like the optimal strategy to get a good seat on Frontier for free is to check in but perhaps wait until the back of the plane is filled up but not wait QUITE as long as I did

Great article, but to do this you have to actually have to fly Frontier. Nothing is worth that

I agree! After years of acquiring miles and flights to achieve Elite tier, I burned my miles with this nonsense airline and quit for Southwest. Besides the fact that Southwest has numerous flights from Milwaukee and free bags, a semi decent seat compared to Frontier, a nice in flight magazine, free snacks and beverages I don’t think as but the minimal price difference. When I want to go somewhere it’s on MY schedule, not Frontiers, which from Milwaukee is pretty pitiful.

Thanks for sharing this “experience.” Almost a delight to read, a trick to fight back against the ever shrinking, miserable seating on Frontier. Hate it that we are now are forced to pay up, to be sure we can sit with the family (in the intensely painful, cattle car part of the plane — and I’m not that tall.)

Yeah, I know, super cheap flights, where the logic goes that we pay “only for what you need.” (oxygen and your knees not being needed)

Still, there are times when the whatever Frontier promo seems too good pass up (like last summer $23 fares, IAD to Colorado Springs) — so if I’m ever flying by myself, will remember this.

ps, I still have a legacy Frontier credit card — now no fee version. Too *mnd bad that card doesn’t come with any actual flight benefits (like luggage or seating or oxygen)

In fifty one minutes (doors close 20 minutes before scheduled take off) you got through security (Denver security, at that), had breakfast in Concourse C then made it to Concourse A? Good for you!

This doesn’t work anymore. Im alone flying from Orlando to Charlotte on Thanksgiving. Plane leaves around 7:45p. Since I got my invitation from Frontier last night, at 8:36, it already included a seat assignment of 17E. I waited until approximately 3:45p today to check in and was still assigned 17E. Does seat assignment work differently now or did I do something wrong?

No, you did not necessarily do anything wrong. They gave you 17E before you checked in, and you still had what they gave you after you checked in. The only thing you could have done better was either pick a seat before your invitation or try to request a seat change if possible.

This was great! I have been trying to figure this out also. I love Frontier $15. And $20. Flts. We travel alot on Frontier. I can get seats at same time as my daughter- 24 hrs before and she gets rows 16 and we get row 27! I dont get it but fun to try and figure it out.

my son flying by himself tomorrow and I checked him today exactly 24 hours before the flight and they assigned him 9D – not bad. As of now the plane is not too full with many rear seats empty so who knows how they decide where you sit

I’m back with another comment on this post over 4 years after my last comment!

If you’re gunning for one of the top seats on the plane, if you’re traveling solo (or don’t care if you and others on your booking are split up), and if you can tolerate the risk of pushing it too far and being denied boarding on an oversold plane, the strategy detailed here seems like one that could work (even if it didn’t work out that way for Dan).

But if you’re just trying to get away from the back of the plane, my limited experience indicates this approach isn’t necessary and may in fact be counterproductive at this point in time. For my flight tomorrow, I checked in sometime within say ½ an hour of check-in window opening and was assigned a seat in the middle of the plane (row 15 of 30) with dozens and dozens of empty seats behind me–and crucially, priced less than my seat would have been: my seat is directly in front of several rows where they are charging $21 for aisle and window seats, indicating this is at least how much my aisle seat would have been sold for, yet there are about a dozen rows farther back on the plane where the aisle and window seats are priced at $17. So not only did they not place me nearly as far back as they could have, they didn’t even place me into a seat for which they would otherwise charge the lowest possible price. Now, I didn’t get an exit row seat, but my point is that I’m nowhere near the back of the plane. As to my earlier mention that delaying check in may be counterproductive: the vast majority of the seats available on this plane are behind mine and if this flight is anywhere near full, that means that people checking in after me are the ones who are going to be sitting there, meaning delaying check in here results not in sitting farther forward in the plane but in sitting farther back in the plane.

Also, it’s worth noting that they gave my wife and I seats together. As they say, your mileage may vary, but if you’re booked together with others and wish to sit together, I recommend an earlier, not a later check in because my experience (again, limited experience) indicates that if the seats together are available they may give them to you. But clearly, if you wait so long to check in that seats together aren’t even available then they obviously can’t give them to you.

I do also think (after having a few conversations with Frontier) that despite their rhetoric to the contrary, that Frontier’s seating system DOES attempt to seat people on the same reservation together, as long as there are available seats together. So if you’re traveling with a group, I would definitely recommend checking in earlier rather than later

Burning up my stash of Frontier Airlines miles next week for a trip with my wife and 3 year old SFO-DEN-DCA. We used miles for the 3 seats and as a Frontier Elite I get a free carry-on and seat selection for me, but nobody else in my family. Since I've never flown Frontier with the family and get free seat selection when traveling alone I'm not sure what to expect regarding Frontier seat assignments for families if we decline selecting seats for the other 2 in the family. Seat assignments together would come to $72 for the round-trip so I'm curious if we could avoid that. Has anybody ever flown with children on Frontier and declined to purchase seat assignments? How were the seats assigned?

I've flown both Spirit and Allegiant with the family a few dozen times and each time we've always had at least one parent sitting by the kid, so I was wondering if Frontier does something similar?

I've noticed while doing dummy bookings online that the random seat assignments start from the 3rd to the last row, so presumably the last 2 rows are reserved for families that the gate agent can manually assign together. I also wonder if my Frontier Elite status will possibly help in getting better seats or seats together. If anybody has any experience with this I'd love to hear it.

If you don't pay for seats, they are randomly assigned during check-in and Frontier clearly states your party may be seated separately.

Personally, I'd pay for the seats and be done with it.

I would also pay for my seats. Individuals who paid are not going to move to accommodate you, who didn't want to pay. You indicate that you get free seat assignment. If you are sitting in your selected seat and the FA came up and asked you to move to a less desirable seat to accommodate a family, answer honestly---would YOU move?

It is a no brainer. For $72 you have peace of mind and you will be seated together for sure.

You can safe the money and may start unhappily and frustrated into your family trip. Is it worth, up to you to decide. Whatever is your decision, just please stand to it and accept the consequences if there are any.

If you don't get seated together you will need to ask people to move to accommodate you. This is not an easy task during boarding as many will have paid and will say no and you won't know who is in what situation when you ask,

Bottom line there is no guarantees, personally I'd also pay, I couldn't be doing with the hassle of wandering up and down the aisle begging people to switch with me if it came to it, and obviously I would not want my kid to sit next to a random stranger, who knows what that person is and what would you do in an emergency or if they needed you,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I am certainly willing to accept the consequences of not purchasing a seat assignment and would not expect anyone to give up a less desirable seat. Perhaps my questions was too long for what I was asking, but all I really want to know is whether other people have experience not paying for seats in advance as a family and whether or not they were assigned seats together.

I, too, do not understand what the big deal about $72 for the entire RT would be for the certainty of getting your favored seats.. I also don't understand why you might think that families would automatically be seated together.

It's also not just giving seats up for less desirable ones, sometimes folks just want to sit together, in fact quite often that's why they pay,
