It is well known that exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight, however, there are several additional benefits of physical activity that people may not necessarily know about.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) maintains that regular physical activity is one of the best things we can do for our health, and for individuals with no medical problems, the benefits of exercise outweigh the risks.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), healthy adults should engage in moderate-intensity exercises, such as brisk walking, ballroom dancing and playing doubles tennis, for at least 150 minutes per week, or vigorous-intensity exercise, such as jogging, playing basketball and doing Zumba, for at least 75 minutes per week.

A combination of the two is also recommended. In addition, an exercise regimen that incorporates aerobics (cardio), strength training, flexibility and balance/coordination exercises are essential in maintaining optimal health.

A sedentary lifestyle—that is, one with little physical activity and a lot of time spent sitting down—increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, lower back pain and other ailments.

Conversely, an active lifestyle can offer the following benefits:

1. Decreased risk of obesity As stated above, regular exercise in combination with healthful eating patterns can help you lose weight and keep it off. The exact amount may vary person to person, but according to the ACSM, when it comes to managing weight, the more physical activity the better.

2. Improved brain function Some studies have shown that exercise can improve memory, learning and attention at every age. This is a great benefit to college students. Researchers have also found that exercise can sharpen and improve judgement.

3. Improved mood Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of depression. In addition, group exercise classes can lead to increased socialization, community building and decreased loneliness, which can also improve overall mental health and mood.

4. Improved sleep In some studies, those who exercised fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer than others who had not exercised. Exercise may help improve both quantity and quality of sleep.

5. Reduced risk of cancer Research has shown that exercise may decrease the risk of certain cancers. In particular, studies have found that physical activity can decrease the risk of colon and breast cancer.

6. Decreased risk of heart disease Exercise has been shown to reduce blood pressure and resting heart rate, improve the fitness of the heart, and improve cholesterol levels in the blood. All of these factors are important in reducing the risk of heart attacks, stroke and other heart diseases. The ACSM recommends more physical activity for additional benefits.

7. Lower risk of diabetes Physical activity, particularly aerobic exercise, can help make muscles more sensitive to any carbohydrates taken in from food, which reduces the risk of diabetes by regulating blood sugar.

If you engage in regular physical activity, you are already reaping the benefits of exercise.

If you are new to exercise, the CDC recommends starting slowly and gradually building up your level of activity and intensity. If you have a medical condition or are worried about beginning to exercise, the CDC recommends checking with your doctor or another qualified medical professional to get clearance to exercise.

Students with health complications are disadvantaged in academic activities. Most students often seek medical treatment for physical and psychological problems. However, most of them are oblivious of the fact that they can avoid many health complications by performing regular exercises (Hardman and Stensel 12-13).

Although students engage in various activities such as watching movies, reading novels, shopping and interacting with each other, most of them disregard physical activity as form of leisure. Therefore, students who dislike physical activities such as games and sports should change their attitude because they risk having physical and psychological challenges including poor academic performance. This essay discusses the benefits of conducting physical exercises.

Medical research indicates that physical exercise has the following benefits to the wellbeing of an individual. Many college students are grappling with the challenge of being overweight because they have poor diets. Although there are various approaches of dealing with obesity, conducting regular bodily exercise is arguably the best solution to this challenge. Physical activities facilitate the burning of extra body fats, which accumulate in the body overtime. Therefore, regular engagement in physical activities is the most sustainable way of managing weight loss. Although losing weight is as difficult as paying debts it can be overcome through dedication and consistent exercises (Ginis and Petruzzello 72-73).

Most heart complications can be avoided or retracted by regular exercise because the heart is one of the body organs that need to be active to function efficiently. Physical activities can repair impaired blood vessels by eliminating bad fats that clog them. Exercise also relaxes arteries; hence, making the heart to function properly (Hardman and Stensel 23-24). Moreover, simple activities such as walking, running, jogging and swimming can prevent or mitigate hypertension.

Intensive academic tasks often fatigue many college students. Prolonged fatigue leads to lack of concentration in class and depression. Although many people often use tranquilizers to alleviate fatigue, they only feel better for a short duration. Interestingly, body exercise is the best therapy for fatigue and depression because it relaxes the brain and boosts self-esteem (Ginis and Petruzzello 57-65).

Respiratory complications such as common colds and asthma can be mitigated by engaging in activities that generate body heat. When the body is warm, the respiratory tract functions well. Moreover, exercise boosts body immunity for several minutes. Health specialists often propose swimming as one of the most viable exercises for asthmatic individuals.

Diabetes is one of the complicated diseases that is increasingly affecting the youth since most of them have adopted sedentary lifestyles. Activity lessens cholesterol and insulin as well as weight loss, which can enable diabetics to avoid further complications such as circulatory disorders.

“Research findings by Seattle Cancer Research Centre shows that approximately 35 percent of cancer deaths are linked to overweight inactivity” (Marcus 15). Exercise facilitates digestion and elimination of toxic substances from the body, which can trigger irregular growth of cells. In addition, “high concentrations of oestrogen hormones that often trigger breast malignancy among women can be eliminated easily through physical activity” (Marcus 89).

Many people use beauty-enhancing products to make them look young and beautiful, but such products are prepared using lethal chemicals that can cause side effects such as skin disorders. Exercise is a good alternative to be young and beautiful; for example, young overweight individuals can easily be mistaken to be adults. Exercise facilitates transmission of blood in the body and mitigates the danger of stroke.

Research findings reveal that active individuals are 27 percent less likely to suffer from stroke compared to the sedentary people (Hardman and Stensel 89-90). Moreover, the brain works better when it receives constant flow of oxygenated blood and this process can be enhanced by exercise. “A research finding by the University of Illinois showed that activity stimulates the growth of nerve cells in the memory component of the brain” (Hardman and Stensel 35).

Medical studies reveal that active individuals experience good sex life because they have better blood transmission, which enhances libido and performance of their sexual organs. Furthermore, the relaxing effect of exercise on the brain facilitates sexual activity. Conversely, since the brain influences sexual activity, depressed people do not enjoy sex. “The American Council of Exercise points out that a physically active individual has natural Viagra” (Marcus 68). Last, sleeping can be enhanced by activity because it alleviates headaches, stress and insomnia. Exercise also helps in activating endorphins, which alleviate pain, and improve emotional health in the body.

This essay has revealed the benefits of engaging in activity. Therefore, it is evident that majority of health complications can be evaded through regular activity. Consequently, people should drastically change their attitude towards bodily activities because they are beneficial to their mental and physical well-being. People should be more creative to make bodily activities interesting. Therefore, it can be concluded that activity provides good therapy to the human body.

Regular participation in exercise may improve an individual’s physiological, cognitive, and psychological health. Many decades of research illustrate the positive effect physical activity has on the body and mind. When practiced across the lifespan, physical activity may result in greater overall health, and a reduced risk for many chronic diseases.

Despite the aforementioned benefits, many Americans do not currently meet national recommendations for physical activity participation. College students in particular may face unique challenges to participating in regular physical activity, often due to perceived and environmental barriers. However, many college students report a deep desire to maintain physical fitness and wellness in the midst of hectic academic schedules.

Chapter 2 will present an overview of the numerous benefits incurred from physical activity participation, after which the underlying factors influencing participation in exercise (or lack thereof) in college-aged populations will be reviewed. Finally, several behavioral strategies which may aid an individual’s initiation and maintenance of a physical activity regimen will be explored.

The human body is like a complex and delicate machine which comprises several small parts. A slight malfunction of one part leads to the breakdown of the machine. Exercising helps to maintain a healthy weight by stoking our metabolism, utilizing and burning the extra calories.

Types of Exercise

There are three broad intensities of exercise:

1) Light exercise – Going for a walk is an example of light exercise. In this, the exerciser is able to talk while exercising.

2) Moderate exercise – Here, the exerciser feels slightly out of breath during the session. Examples could be walking briskly, cycling moderately or walking up a hill.

3) Vigorous exercise – While performing this exercise, the exerciser is panting during the activity. The exerciser feels his/her body being pushed much nearer its limit compared to the other two intensities. This could include running, cycling fast, and heavy-weight training.

Regular exercise increases our fitness level and physical stamina. It plays a crucial role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It can help with blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes and obesity. Moreover, it can help to reduce blood pressure. Regular exercise substantially reduces the risk of dying of coronary heart disease and eases the risk of stroke and colon cancer. People of all age groups benefit from exercising.

Exercise can be effective in improving the mental well-being of human beings. It relieves human stress and anxiety. When we come back from work or school, we feel exhausted after a whole day of work. If we can go out to have a walk or jog for at least 30 minutes, it makes us feel happy and relaxed. A number of studies have found that a lifestyle that includes exercise helps alleviate depression. Those who can maintain regular exercise will also reduce their chances of seeing a doctor. Without physical activity, the body’s muscles lose their strength, endurance and ability to function properly. Regular exercise keeps all parts of the body in continuous activity. It improves overall health and fitness, as well as decreases the risk of many chronic diseases. Therefore, physical exercise is very important in our life.

Exercise can play a significant role in keeping the individual, society, community and nation wealthy. If the citizens of a country are healthy, the country is sure to touch heights in every facet of life. The country’s healthy generation can achieve the highest marks in various fields and thereby enable their country to win laurels and glory at the international level. The first step is always the hardest. However, if we can overcome it, and exercise for 21 days continuously, it will be a new beginning for a healthy life.

The influence of physical exercise on college students’ life satisfaction: The chain mediating role of self-control and psychological distress

To explore the relationship between physical exercise and life satisfaction among college students and test the dual mediating role of self-control and psychological distress between them.

A sample of 526 Chinese college students completed questionnaires regarding physical exercise, life satisfaction, self-control and psychological distress, of which 38.4% were boys.

Path analyzes indicated that physical exercise was positively correlated with life satisfaction, and this link could be mediated by self-control and psychological distress.

The present study identifies the potential underlying mechanism by which physical exercise is associated with the life satisfaction of college students, which has important implications for theory and prevention.

1. Introduction

Life satisfaction is an individual’s overall evaluation of his or her nearest living environment and living conditions ( Shin and Johnson, 1978 ) and is an individual’s overall evaluation of the environment ( Teodora et al., 2021 ). An individual’s positive satisfaction with their life as a whole or with specific components of their life plays a key role in achieving their life goals ( Teodora et al., 2021 ). At the freshman stage of university, students are in a special period of cognitive development. Students’ evaluation of their living situation is an important assessment indicator of their well-being, and good life satisfaction can help them to enhance their studies and promote physical and mental monitoring of their development ( Hui et al., 2021 ). Therefore, it is of positive significance to study the level of life satisfaction and the factors influencing it in a group of Chinese university students.

Previous studies have shown that the level of personal life satisfaction is not only influenced by the individual’s internal emotions (such as anger, frustration), but also influenced by external social factors (such as work environment) and behavioral lifestyles (such as physical and cultural activities) ( Cruz-Ferreira et al., 2011 ). Among these influences, people’s behavior and lifestyles are of wide concern to society ( Arslan and Akkas, 2014 ; Liu et al., 2021 ). Physical exercise is a physical activity that aims to develop physical fitness, improve physical and mental health and enrich the diversity of one’s life through a variety of reasonable physical means according to one’s needs ( Han, 2015 ). Physical exercise strengthens an individual’s immune system, maintains vigor and reduces the incidence of disease ( Yang and Liang, 2011 ). At the same time, physical exercise can also relieve negative heart emotions such as tension and anxiety caused by negative life events and help them develop a positive and optimistic attitude toward life ( Cao et al., 2021 ). During exercise, the brain secretes glucagon, which stimulates the hypothalamus to produce a pleasurable emotional experience. Therefore, physical activity will alleviate individuals’ negative emotions and help them develop their mental health in a positive direction ( Cao et al., 2021 ).

1.1. The association between physical exercise and life satisfaction

Data from previous studies point to a strong link between physical activity and life satisfaction among university students ( Liu et al., 2021 ). In recent years, there has been an increase in research on the relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction, and the positive effects of physical activity on life satisfaction are gaining attention from researchers ( Chen, 2005 ). Mehmet and Fatih (2018) proposed that regular physical activity actively increases personal satisfaction with life, Jetzke and Mutz (2020) physical activity was found to have an important role in improving the well-being of young people. At the same time, studies have shown that university students who participate in sports show higher levels of satisfaction with themselves than their peers who do not participate in sports ( Arslan and Akkas, 2014 ). Therefore, it is relevant to study the issue of the effect of physical activity on life satisfaction among university students from a physical and mental perspective. Based on the research, this study inferred that physical activity significantly and positively predicted life satisfaction among university students.

1.2. Self-control as a mediator

Research has found that people with high self-control tend to have better social adjustment skills (such as interpersonal skills and emotional regulation), which leads to better performance in their daily studies or work and therefore higher subjective well-being ( Tan and Guo, 2008 ). Life satisfaction is considered to be an important cognitive component of subjective well-being ( Diener, 1996 ). Self-control is a process by which individuals wish to improve their original behavior and thinking by reducing their own undesirable desires, a process by which new ways of behaving and thinking replace old ways of behaving and thinking ( Tan and Guo, 2008 ). On the other hand, it has been found in self-control studies that self-control can be induced through physical exercise ( Zhang et al., 2018 ). Baumeister et al. (2007) proposes in the self-control model theory that ‘self-control as an energy resource is depleted by the continuous performance of self-control tasks’. Therefore, if university students are able to control their behavior or thoughts in the process of participating in physical exercise, they will be able to improve their level of self-control in the process of completing physical exercise within the prescribed time ( Cheng and Wang, 2020 ). Based on the studies, this study infers that self-control plays a mediating role in the effect of physical activity on college students’ life satisfaction.

1.3. Psychological distress as a mediator

Psychological distress, also known as psychological distress, is an unpleasant emotional experience caused by a variety of factors, including psychological, social and spiritual dimensions, and can develop from the common fear, sadness, and vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and fear ( Hamer et al., 2009 ). Research shows that physical activity is a significant negative predictor of psychological distress ( Sun and Dai, 2007 ). For college students, active participation in physical activity is beneficial in regulating mood, enhancing sensory perception and enhancing internal motivation ( McMahon et al., 2017 ). Psychological measures were administered to subjects after participation in exercise and the data showed a significant decrease in both depressive states, anxiety and stress or psychological disorders ( Best, 2010 ). Individuals who do not participate in physical activity will experience anxiety and depression over a longer period of time than those who are physically active and regular ( Sun and Dai, 2007 ). The study also found that individuals with low levels of psychological distress had high levels of life satisfaction ( Yennurajalingam et al., 2018 ). Happiness is an essential characteristic of mental health, and when individuals have fewer negative emotions, they achieve a higher level of subjective well-being ( Yu, 2022 ), in other words, have better life satisfaction. Based on the findings, this study infers that psychological distress mediates the effect of physical activity on life satisfaction among university students.

1.4. The chain mediating effect of self-control and psychological distress

Self-control has been studied as an important component of mental health ( Duckworth et al., 2019 ). Self-controlled, temptation-denying decision-making provides clear positive self-signals ( Dhar and Wertenbroch, 2012 ), and self-control within an individual is navigated from different aspects using various elements of psychology ( Ge and Ho, 2021 ). Research has shown that self-control has two effects on mental states, one that promotes positive mental states (such as efficacy, self-esteem and life satisfaction) and one that inhibits negative mental states (such as anxiety, stress and suicidal ideation) ( Qi and Zhang, 2014 ). Research shows that self-control inhibits negative mental states more than it facilitates positive mental states ( de Ridder et al., 2012 ). And, individuals with high self-control have lower levels of psychological distress ( Ge et al., 2021 ; Shi and Ma, 2021 ). Therefore, this study infers that self-control and psychological distress play a chain mediating role in the effect of physical activity on life satisfaction among university students.

1.5. The present study

Although it has been suggested that self-control and psychological distress are associated with physical activity and life satisfaction among university students, it remains unclear how self-control and psychological distress affect this relationship. To our knowledge, this is the first study to consider the mediating effects of self-control and psychological distress. The present study contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between physical activity and life satisfaction among university students and contributes to the generalization of social control theory and general stress theory in the field of life satisfaction.

In many schools in China, at the end of the semester, in order for students to excel in exams, teachers of specialist subjects often take time away from PE lessons for students to revise. Teachers of specialist subjects believe that less PE lessons are irrelevant to their students. The purpose of this study is to raise awareness of the importance of physical exercise, to change the past disdain for physical exercise and physical education classes, to make society more aware of students’ psychological problems and to have practical implications for the reform and development of the education sector.

In short, using Chinese college students as participants, this study tested the mediating effect of self-control and psychological distress on the relationship between physical exercise and life satisfaction. Based on previous empirical research, we put forward four hypotheses: (1) physical exercise may be positively correlated with life satisfaction; (2) self-control may be the intermediary between physical exercise and life satisfaction; (3) psychological distress may be the intermediary between physical exercise and life satisfaction and (4) self-control and psychological distress play a chain mediating role between physical exercise and life satisfaction.

2.1. Participants

The participants in this study were recruited from two middle schools in Hubei, China through random cluster sampling. A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed, of which 526 were valid, and the effective recovery rate was 87.67%. There were 202 boys and 324 girls, with an average age of 18.82 (range = 17–19; SD = 1.706).

2.2. Procedures

The present study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the College of Education and Sports Sciences, Yangtze University. Convenience sampling was adopted to choose six to seven classes in each grade. Participants and their parents or legal guardians were provided with written consent forms, which informed them that personal information would be kept confidential and their responses would be used only for research purposes. The data were collected by trained senior students majoring in psychology during class time. To encourage honest reporting, college students were given approximately 30 min to complete the anonymous questionnaires.

2.3. Measures

2.3.1. physical exercise.

The physical training of college students was assessed using the “Physical Activity Rating Scale” developed by Liang (1994) . The scale assesses the physical exercise activity level from three aspects: exercise intensity, exercise time and exercise frequency, each of which is divided into five levels, scored from 1 to 5. Calculated as: amount of physical activity = exercise intensity × (exercise time-1) × exercise frequency; maximum score 100 points, minimum score 0 points and higher score means higher individual exercise. The physical activity level can be divided into 3 levels by the conversion of scores, and the classification criteria are as follows: small exercise ≤19 points, 20 points ≤ moderate exercise ≤42 points and large exercise ≥43 points. In order to facilitate the classification of sports activity levels, according to previous studies, the original ≤19 small exercise levels were divided into two criteria: no exercise ≤4 points and 5 points ≤ small exercise ≤19 points, so the sports activity levels in this study were divided into four levels ( Xia et al., 2018 ). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for this questionnaire in this study was 0.60.

2.3.2. Life satisfaction

Observed using the Life Satisfaction Scale used by Pavot and Diener (1993) . There are 5 questions in this scale, which are scored by 7 points (“Strongly disagree” to “Strongly agree”). The level of life satisfaction was determined by the cumulative score of the questions. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for this questionnaire in this study was 0.86.

2.3.3. Self-control

Tan used the “self-control scale” for measurement ( Tan and Guo, 2008 ). The scale consists of 19 topics, including five dimensions: individual impulse control level, lifestyle habits, resistance to temptation, focus on work, or study and rational entertainment. The scale is scored on a 5-point scale (“not at all” to “very much”). They are reverse scored except questions 1, 5, 11, and 14. The higher the score, the stronger the self-control ability. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for this questionnaire in this study was 0.88.

2.3.4. Psychological distress

The simplified Chinese version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale revised by Gong et al. (2010) was used, which consists of 21 questions and contains three dimensions: depression, stress, and anxiety. A 4-point score (“not met” to “very met”) was used, and the higher the score, the stronger the degree of psychological distress. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for this questionnaire in this study was 0.95.

2.4. Statistical analysis

Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24. Common method deviance testing was performed first, followed by descriptive statistical analysis and Pearson’s correlational analysis of physical exercise, life satisfaction, self-control, and psychological distress. And finally, we employed the SPSS macro PROCESS (model 6) suggested by Hayes to test the proposed mediation model ( Hayes, 2013 ). This SPSS macro has been used to test mediating models in several studies, in which this SPSS macro showed higher statistical testability ( Lian et al., 2018 , 2021 ).

2.5. Common method deviation test

Exploratory factor analysis was used to test common method deviations ( Zhou and You, 2004 ). Taking all the questions of each questionnaire as the items for exploratory factor analysis, the explanation rate of the first common factor precipitated is 28.87%, which is much less than the critical criterion of 40%, so there is no serious common method deviation in the data of this study.

3.1. Descriptive statistics and associated analyzes

The results of correlation analysis of each variable (see Table 1 ) showed that physical exercise was significantly positively correlated with life satisfaction and self-control, and significantly negatively correlated with psychological distress; life satisfaction was significantly positively correlated with self-control and significantly negatively correlated with psychological distress and psychological distress was significantly negatively correlated with self-control.

3.2. Mediation model testing analysis

Bootstrap ( Fang et al., 2012 ) was used to analyze the mediating effect of self-control and psychological distress. After controlling for gender, age and grade, 5,000 samples were randomly selected to estimate the 95% confidence interval of the mediation effect to analyze the mediation effect of self-control and psychological distress in the effect of physical exercise on life satisfaction, and the analysis results are shown in Table 2 .

The overall effect of physical exercise on life satisfaction was significant ( β  = 0.10, p  < 0.05), but the predictive effect on life satisfaction was no longer significant when the mediating variable was added ( β  = −0.01, p  > 0.05). Physical exercise positively predicted self-control ( β  = 0.30, p  < 0.001). Psychological distress negatively predicted life satisfaction ( β  = −0.25, p  < 0.001).

Mediation effect analysis showed (see Figure 1 ; Table 3 ). Bootstrap 95% confidence intervals for the mediation effects of psychological distress and self-control did not include 0, indicating that psychological distress and self-control were mediating variables for physical exercise affecting life satisfaction. Among them, the mediating effect of self-control accounted for 60% of the total effect, and the chained mediating effect of self-control and psychological distress accounted for 30% of the total effect.

4. Discussion

This study investigated the effect of physical exercise on life satisfaction in college students and the mechanisms of self-control and psychological distress. The results showed that physical exercise had no significant predictive effect on college students’ life satisfaction, but it could indirectly affect college students’ life satisfaction through the intermediary effect of self-control and the chain intermediary effect of self-control and psychological distress. In addition, in the regression analysis of psychological distress, it is also found that the degree of psychological distress in women is greater than that in men. This phenomenon may be due to the fact that women do not feel as secure as men in the university environment and therefore can possess more psychological distress ( Etopio et al., 2019 ).

The direct effect of physical exercise on life satisfaction found in this study was not significant, consistent with the findings of McAuley et al. (2006) and Dai and Yao (2012) . In McAuley et al. (2006) study, by constructing an empirical model of the relationship between physical exercise and individual life satisfaction, it was found that reducing the number of times an individual participates in physical exercise decreases an individual’s chances of having a successful experience in physical exercise, which leads to a reduction in self-efficacy. Subsequently, it is accompanied by a decline in health status, which ultimately affects people’s quality of life. Self-efficacy is closely linked to self-control ( Chen et al., 2021 ). Therefore, physical exercise does not have a direct impact on life satisfaction as shown by previous findings but ultimately impacts life satisfaction through self-control and mental health status in turn.

This study further confirmed that self-control plays a completely mediating role between physical exercise and college students’ life satisfaction. On the one hand, college students’ physical exercise can significantly positively predict self-control. As an energy resource, self-control is continuously consumed in sports. If physical exercise is performed for a long time, this energy of self-control will be greatly increased in the body, so physical exercise will promote the improvement of self-control ( Baumeister et al., 2007 ; Cheng and Wang, 2020 ). On the other hand, self-control significantly predicted college students’ life satisfaction. Self-control is one of the most powerful abilities of the human mind to benefit most from the human mind because people can adjust themselves to improve their fit with the self and environment, and when people feel happiest and healthiest is when they match perfectly ( Tangney et al., 2004 ). People with high self-control adapt better to stress in life and work, and as a result, they have a higher sense of life satisfaction ( Tangney et al., 2004 ; Tavis et al., 2007 ).

The intermediate link of the path “physical exercise–self-control–psychological distress–life satisfaction” is the chain intermediary composed of “self-control–psychological distress” and is an important bridge for physical exercise to affect college students’ life satisfaction. This suggests that in addition to self-control alone playing a mediating role between physical exercise and life satisfaction in college students, physical exercise can also affect psychological distress by affecting self-control and then play a role in life satisfaction. Through long-term effective physical exercise, individuals can improve their own self-control level ( Zhang et al., 2018 ). In the process of physical exercise, with the individual requirements for self-movement and reasonable management of their own time, they can also improve their own self-control level. When individuals possess a high level of self-control, it will have a positive impact on their psychological state, thereby reducing the negative emotions of individuals and alleviating the adverse psychological state of the self ( Yu, 2022 ). Therefore, individuals with a high level of self-control tend to produce less adverse psychological states, which, in turn, reduce the degree of psychological distress. When individuals have low levels of psychological distress, subjectively, people will have a positive attitude toward life, so individuals will obtain a good emotional experience and then obtain a high level of life satisfaction ( Yu, 2022 ).

On the whole, this study explains the psychological mechanism of college students’ physical exercise affecting life satisfaction: physical exercise indirectly affects life satisfaction through independent mediation of self-control and chain mediation of self-control and psychological distress. Compared with previous studies, this study found that physical exercise does not directly affect individual life satisfaction, but indirectly affects individual life satisfaction through its effects on individual self-control and psychological distress. This study has important implications for improving college students’ life satisfaction. On the one hand, the educational administrators of colleges and universities should pay more attention to the daily physical exercise of college students, and at the same time, they should increase the publicity of the benefits of physical exercise to students. By strengthening the physical exercise of college students, they can reduce the negative psychological state of the students and improve their life satisfaction level. On the other hand, society and schools can pay more attention to the psychological state of college students and reduce the adverse events caused by their physical and mental conditions on campus or off campus.

5. Limitations and future directions

Limitations of this study and future directions should be noted. First, due to our cross-sectional research design, causality cannot be established. Future longitudinal or experimental studies can further examine the causal relationship between Physical Exercise and life Satisfaction. Second, self-reports may be subject to increased biases. Future studies should allow for a multidimensional approach to collect more objective. Finally, the results of the present study also need to be extended to a more representative sample of Chinese adolescents and to adolescents from other cultural backgrounds for a wider test.

So what is the importance of exercise? Well, if you’re not getting enough physical activity, not only are you putting your health at risk, but you’re also robbing yourself of opportunities to improve your mood and cognitive function.

Importance of exercise in our life

Exercise is one of the most important things in our life. Not only does it keep us healthy, but it also helps us to keep our minds sharp and our bodies toned. It can also help us to relieve stress and improve our moods. In addition, exercise has been shown to be helpful in preventing some forms of cancer, arthritis, and obesity. So if you’re looking for ways to improve your health, be sure to include exercise in your routine!

Physical exercise has many benefits , including:

1. Improved mental health. Exercise has been shown to improve mood and cognitive function, making it an important part of overall health.

We all know we should incorporate regular exercise into our lives because of the multitude of benefits. From cardiovascular health to bone health to decreasing the risk of diabetes to etc., there are a great number of health benefits. However, using health benefits as a motivator is often not a very compelling reason to go to the gym.

Studies show that short term benefits, such as feeling better during or immediately after a workout, are a stronger incentive to get people moving. Additionally, challenging yourself in a physical manner through regular exercise makes you a better person all around, and this carries through all aspects of your life, including your studies.

Embrace the Uncomfortable

Here is the key point: Exercise forces you to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It’s incredibly powerful. This applies to any sport or athletic endeavor that requires regular training. As many top athletes say, suffering in competitive athletics is inevitable, but being able to embrace uncomfortable situations is paramount to success, and not just in exercise, but in other aspects of your life.

Public speaking used to be one of my biggest fears. I absolutely hated any time I had to speak in front of an audience. But by learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and getting outside of my comfort zone, I was able to address this weakness and even learned to enjoy public speaking over time.

Instead of trying to escape the burn, pain, and discomfort I experience during exercise, I’ve learned to practice mindfulness . I look at it curiously, almost from a third person perspective, intrigued by what I’m feeling rather than letting the feeling control my thoughts.

You can see this happen in action by doing planks. I challenge you to time yourself doing a regular plank. Now do it again, but this time, don’t let the burn consume you; instead, try looking at it from a third person perspective. See how much longer you can go.

The Benefits of Exercise for Students

So how does this help you as a student? Research shows that regular aerobic exercise enhances cognitive functions, particularly executive functions. Another study showed that participants who went from not exercising at all to even a modest program (just 2 or 3 sessions per week) demonstrated decreased stress, as well as reduced smoking, alcohol, and caffeine consumption. Their spending habits, study habits, and regulatory habits improved, too. People’s ability to push through discomfort in exercise enhanced their ability to stay calm in the face of other difficulties.

This is closely tied to discipline , which, as you guys know, I am a huge proponent of. Discipline and self-regulatory behavior allows you to achieve something you set out to do at a prior moment in time, even when you don’t want to do it at a later time. Like I’ve said before, discipline is a muscle requiring regular exercise. If you practice discipline by going to the gym regularly and eating healthier, you’ll find it much easier to follow a disciplined study routine. That alone will make a significant difference in your grades.

In The Power of Habit , Charles Duhigg calls exercise a “keystone habit,” meaning change in one area of life can bring about positive changes in many other areas. These keystone habits are powerful because they “change our sense of self and our sense of what is possible.” While this is not my favorite book ever, it is a very powerful read. As you may have heard before, “you are the sum of your habits.” Most of what we do day in and day out are repeated behaviors that are habits. Therefore, changing your habits is one of the most powerful ways to change or improve yourself.

Now, the key take away from these studies is that you don’t have to exercise at professional or olympic levels of intensity. As long as you are challenging yourself, you will reap a multitude of benefits. Challenging yourself is a vital part of growth and improvement.

Challenging your muscles and body with increased exercise intensity and demand provides a stimulus for muscular growth and strengthening. Similarly, challenging yourself in other areas of your life and getting outside of your comfort zone will help you grow in different ways.

Putting Exercise Into Practice

If you’re finding it difficult to start a regular exercise routine , consider the following. Although it may seem counterintuitive, studies have shown that people whose goals are weight loss and better health spend the least amount of time exercising. In this study of 335 women between the ages of 60 to 95, immediate rewards that enhance daily life, such as revitalized energy, improved mood, and decreased stress, offered significantly more motivation.

Most of us know that regular physical activity can strengthen muscles, burn fat, and lower our risk of heart disease. But many advantages of exercise go beyond physical fitness and cardiovascular health, according to Yale School of Medicine experts.

Five Yale Department of Internal Medicine specialists in areas ranging from infectious diseases to allergy and immunology discuss why exercise is key to optimal health.

1. Exercise reverses insulin resistance.

Studies led by Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD , George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Investigator Emeritus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center, have demonstrated that exercise can reverse muscle insulin resistance.

“Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is a major factor in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, heart disease, and obesity-associated cancers,” said Shulman, who recommends daily exercise to promote cardiometabolic health. “There is also increasing evidence that insulin resistance may be a contributing factor in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.”

2. Exercise aids in recovery from infection.

Exercise can reduce the risk of poor outcomes when infections occur, according to Scott Roberts, MD , assistant professor of medicine (infectious diseases). “For many infections, such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, and poor respiratory health are all major contributors to severe disease,” he said. “Exercise can help mitigate these risks and boost the odds of a speedy recovery.”

3. Exercise enhances immunity.

There is evidence that light to moderate aerobic exercise, like walking or jogging, can help the immune system work better, says Elise Liu, MD, PhD , instructor of medicine (rheumatology, allergy and immunology). “People who regularly get this type of exercise get sick less frequently than people who are sedentary,” she said. “This could be because several types of immune cells have been shown to work better shortly after exercise.”

4. Exercise contributes to a healthy gut.

Evidence suggests that exercise leads to a more diverse gut microbiome and an increase in butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that may prevent disease, according to Avlin Imaeda, MD, PhD , associate professor of medicine (digestive diseases). “Butyrate is one of the key fuels that the cells lining the colon need to grow, divide, and stay healthy, and higher levels of butyrate can reduce the severity of inflammatory bowel disease and the risk of colon cancer, as well as general inflammation,” she said.

5. Exercise improves sleep.

Exercising during the day can help you sleep at night, notes Brienne Miner, MD, MHS , assistant professor of medicine (geriatric medicine). “Exercise is an external cue to your circadian clock, sending a physiologic message that lets your brain and body know when it is time to be awake versus when it is time to sleep,” she said. “A robust and regular circadian clock allows more regular and restorative sleep.”

Regular physical activity also contributes to better physical and mental health, decreasing the risk of developing sleep problems and potentially improving existing sleep problems, Miner said.

Study finds that a dash of exercise can help students focus and enjoy university lectures

A university professor has found a way to help students—and himself—power through long lecture classes: exercise breaks.

In a new study, a professor at The Ohio State University showed that five-minute exercise sessions during lectures were feasible and that students reported positive impacts on their attention and motivation, engagement with their peers and course enjoyment. The research is published in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living .

The results may not be particularly surprising, but they do suggest a solution for a long-standing issue in college classrooms, said Scott Hayes, author of the study and associate professor of psychology at Ohio State.

"Nobody can stay on task for 80 minutes straight without their mind wandering and their attention waxing and waning," Hayes said.

"If you give students a break and get their bodies moving for just a few minutes, it can help them get their minds back to the lecture and probably be more productive. I know it helps me, as well."

Hayes said he was inspired to do this research by a similar laboratory-based study of how students responded to exercise breaks during a single video lecture. That study found positive results, but Hayes wondered if it could work in the real world of in-person university lectures, over the course of a full semester.

He tested it in four of his own classes. One to two student-led exercise sessions (five minutes each) were implemented in each lecture during upper-level psychology courses with 20 to 93 students. The classes were 80 minutes long.

At the beginning of the course, Hayes broke the class into small groups , and each group was responsible for developing a five-minute exercise session. Hayes reviewed the exercise sessions beforehand to make sure they were workable and safe.

"I wanted the students to design and lead the sessions because I thought it would help them buy into the idea, and help with their engagement and investment," he said.

Hayes admitted that the sessions were sometimes a bit awkward at the beginning of the semester. The students didn't know exactly how to act, and they weren't used to doing something like this during a class.

But students soon got into the flow and had fun with the sessions. Some of the exercises students included were jumping jacks, lunges, overhead press (with a backpack) and hamstring stretches.

Hayes said a few student groups got creative in designing their sessions.

"One of the groups designed a theme of going to an orchard and picking apples. So they had their fellow students reaching up as if they were picking apples from a tree and reaching down to put them in a basket," Hayes said.

Hayes said he knew the program was a success when students spontaneously provided anonymous comments with their end-of-semester students evaluations. One student's comment reflected a common response: "I enjoyed the exercise breaks in class and really felt like they motivated me to focus more."

In one of the classes studied, Hayes gave the students a survey at the end of the course about the exercise sessions. All the students reported that they had never taken a class that had an exercise break during the lecture.

Students rated the exercise breaks as improving attention, enjoyable, and improving peer engagement. They reported that compared to other classes, they preferred the class with an exercise break and they would like more classes to offer such sessions.

One open question could be whether these exercise sessions improved student learning and grades. Hayes said that is beyond the scope of this study, and it would be difficult to do that kind of research. Comparisons of different classes, at different times of day, and with a variety of teachers, would make comparisons challenging to make.

But this study found that exercise breaks were feasible to do and that students enjoyed them and found them useful—which he said may make it worthwhile for other faculty to try.

Some already have.

"Two colleagues in the psychology department here at Ohio State have told me they have started exercise breaks in their courses," Hayes said. "It may be catching on."
