Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

How to be Healthy Essay

Introduction, keeping fit, eating well, maintain a healthy weight, getting enough sleep, lifestyle choices.

Almost every person hopes to have a long, healthy life. However, many persons do not recognize the fundamental life choices that when made, can enable them live healthy, and often take these choices to be sacrifices that are not worth making. Choosing to adopt a healthy lifestyle has several benefits to the body such as a significant improvement of life expectancy, having a life free of disease and ailments, having a fit body, and the overall well being of the body.

Today, most of us focus on making outside changes in order to look healthy, such as using cosmetics. What we do not realize is that what we put in our body and how we handle it ultimately determines how we look, feel, energy levels, and the general health of the body. In order to be healthy, a person does not necessarily have to make radical changes to the lifestyle, rather, it involves making simple small changes to everyday life.

Changes such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, adding a fruit to a meal, having a glass of water at every opportune instance, and eating snacks in moderation are just some of the few steps to having a healthy life. In order to live healthy, a person should focus on keeping fit, eating healthy, checking on their weight, getting enough sleep, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and taking alcohol in moderation.

One of the greatest impediments to living healthy is the lack of physical activity. Although many people recognize the benefits of keeping fit, they avoid it either because they think it is a waste of time, or they are used to a sedentary lifestyle. The truth is, the more a person engages in physical activity, the healthier they become.

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous, in fact, even simple activities such as gardening, walking, and partaking in domestic chores can greatly improve one’s health. Even recreational activities such as cycling, dancing and swimming can help in keeping fit.

The benefits of physical activity include a reduction of the risks of heart diseases and diabetes, improvement of mental health, strengthening of bones and muscles, and helping with a number of health niggles such as digestion and poor posture, among other benefits.

Eating well entails striving to have a balanced diet at all instances. A good diet not only helps in weight management, but it can also improve a person’s health and the overall quality of life. Every meal should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, grain products and legumes, but less of foods that contain more calories and fats. Although proteins rich foods such as meats are important to the body, they should be taken in moderation, and the focus should be on leaner meats (mainly white meat) and foods with little or no fat.

Consuming dairy products with little or no fats, such as skimmed milk, is another simple plan for reducing the quantity of calories entering the body. Eating habits such as eating while one is not hungry, skipping breakfast, and eating fast should be avoided. A person should also strive to drink as much water as possible since the body requires at least 8 cups of water each day.

One major step to being healthy is to maintain a healthy weight, and this may entail shedding off excess weight, gaining weight for underage persons, or maintaining that ideal weight. Eating right and participating in physical activities can go a long way in having a healthy weight and avoiding the health problems arising from being overweight.

To avoid being overweight or to shed off the extra pounds, a person should avoid high-calorie foods, or consume them in moderation and partake in regular physical activity. Trying to gain weight can be more difficult than losing weight. In gaining weight, one must not focus on consuming junk foods or snacks as this can clog the arteries and lead to heart diseases. Calories and fats must be obtained from healthy foods.

Failure to have enough sleep can have a negative impact on a person’s life, for instance, people who sleep less than seven hours a day are more exposed to catarrhal diseases than those who sleep for at least eight hours. The need for sleep varies among different persons, therefore, one should determine his/her own sleep requirements, and strive to have adequate sleep every day. As a caution, alcohol, or any other drug, should not be used to induce sleep as this would only lead to a pass out, not sleep.

Lifestyle choices such as avoiding cigarettes, avoiding excess calories from alcohol, sugar and fats, reducing the intake of high-fat foods, and partaking in physical activities should be emphasized on a day-to-day basis. Although alcohol has been found to be important to the body, it should be taken in moderation as it exposes the body to harmful compounds (cigarettes have the same effect).

All of us aspire to be healthy and engage in different activities to achieve this objective, however, there is no single way of ensuring that we are healthy for the rest our life. A healthy life is a cumulative product of various activities as outlined above, and discarding certain choices. The activities outlined must be observed on a day-to-day basis, and this does not have to mean making drastic changes, it is the simple, small changes that lead to a healthy life. In fact, drastic changes can lead to failure, or other side effects.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer - A long and healthy life by Andrew Turner @ EnglishWithAnExpert.com

It may be an uncomfortable truth for some, but those who think exercise and diet are not fundamental to longevity are unfortunately mistaken. For the vast majority of people, eating well and moving more will directly result in living a longer, healthier and happier life.

The impact of our lifestyle choices on our health is extremely well documented. Since at least the 1960s, science has shown repeatedly that eating the right foods in the correct amount, combined with regular physical activity, reduces the risk of developing a wide range of health conditions and associated complications. The consensus among the scientific and medical community is clear, and to suggest otherwise is mere speculation.

Diet and exercise are interlinked; they go hand in hand. Poor nutrition inhibits the body from reaping the full benefits of physical activity, while a sedentary lifestyle often increases the desire to eat unhealthy foods – thus creating a vicious circle and accelerating weight gain. On the other hand, consuming healthy foods empowers the human body to perform better, thus making exercise more enjoyable – which, in turn, reduces cravings for junk food. With improved metabolism comes psychological benefits, too; among them are the release of endorphins, which contribute to a more positive mood, a reduction in stress and a higher quality of sleep.

To conclude, it is indisputable that lifestyle makes a significant impact on our health and wellbeing, both physically and psychologically. I therefore strongly disagree with the idea that you can live a long, healthy life without eating well and exercising often.

How to Live a Long, Healthy Life

The importance of sleep and mental health..

Posted August 22, 2023 | Reviewed by Tyler Woods

  • Why Is Sleep Important?
  • Find a sleep therapist near me

Many of us aspire to live a long and healthy life, enjoying an active and independent lifestyle as we age. The good news is that longevity is not entirely out of your control. There are practical steps you can take to increase your chances of living longer and having a long healthspan.

Two of the most important factors for living a long, healthy life are getting restorative sleep and maintaining good mental health.

Restorative Sleep for a Longer Lifespan and Healthspan

Restorative sleep plays a crucial role in achieving optimal health and longevity. It involves progressing through the five sleep stages. These stages allow your body to repair itself and rebalance hormones . Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Uninterrupted and deep sleep cycles within this time frame indicate that you're reaping the rewards of restorative sleep.

Benefits of Restorative Sleep

  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: When you sleep, your body engages in repair and hormone balance. This leads to a decreased risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Sleep also aids in regulating blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Furthermore, quality sleep enhances immune function, making you less vulnerable to infectious illnesses.
  • Brain Health: Sleep is essential for brain health. During sleep, your brain eliminates toxins accumulated throughout the day. Inadequate sleep disrupts this cleansing process, resulting in toxin buildup. Over time, this accumulation could contribute to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Prioritizing quality sleep acts as a safeguard for your brain's well-being as you age.
  • Enhanced Mood and Reduced Stress : Sleep has a big impact on how you feel because it controls chemicals and hormones in your brain. Restorative sleep helps make serotonin; a chemical that makes you feel good. It also helps control stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can make you feel anxious and irritable. Lack of sleep can contribute to mood disorders like depression , stress, and anxiety .
  • Boost Energy and Immunity: After a good night's sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Getting enough sleep keeps your energy up and gives your immune system what it needs to function. Not getting enough sleep disrupts the body's recovery process, leading to fatigue and a higher chance of getting sick.

Prioritizing restorative sleep is essential to fully enjoy the health benefits that sleep offers.

Mental Health's Role in Longevity and Increased Healthspan

Conversations about lifespan and healthspan have traditionally centered on physical health. But the significance of mental well-being is now acknowledged as pivotal for extending life and enriching its quality. Mental health encompasses our emotions, thoughts, and how we interact with others. It affects our well-being, shaping how we live our lives. Experiencing depression, loneliness, and stress can shorten lifespans and diminish the quality of life. Taking care of our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health for a long and happy life.

Here’s how improving mental health influences longevity:

  • Decreases Risk of Physical Illness: Mental health disorders amplify chronic disease risk. For example, depression promotes inflammation and compromises immune function. This makes people more likely to develop illnesses like heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Managing mental health reduces disease risk factors.
  • Improves Adherence to Medical Treatment: For people with mental health challenges, it can be tough to follow treatment plans. Symptoms like low motivation and energy make it hard to maintain medications and lifestyle changes. Good mental health helps you take care of your physical self.
  • Reduces Unhealthy Behaviors: Mental health issues often lead to risky and unhealthy habits. These habits, such as smoking , unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise, can harm your health and lifespan. Taking care of your mental health can help reduce these harmful behaviors.
  • Averts Social Isolation : Feeling alone and not having enough social connections are becoming bigger health concerns. Mental health issues can lead to isolation from others. This isolation can make mental health problems worse and also affect physical health. Having social connections is good for both your mind and body, helping you live longer and better.

There is a strong mind-body connection when it comes to longevity. Seeking help for depression, anxiety, loneliness, and other mental health issues can have profound positive effects on your healthspan and lifespan.

Sleep Strategies for a Long and Healthy Life

Polina Kovaleva/Pexels

Given the myriad benefits of sleep for longevity, achieving restorative sleep should be a priority.

  • Stick to a set sleep schedule, even on weekends. Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake time regulates your circadian rhythm for better rest.
  • Develop a relaxing pre-bed routine like reading or taking a bath to wind down each night. Calming activities cue the body that it's time for sleep.
  • Limit exposure to screens before bed. The blue light emitted from electronics disrupts natural melatonin production.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol , heavy meals, and exercise close to bedtime. These can interfere with sleep.
  • Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. Block out excess light and noise for uninterrupted sleep.
  • Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. The right sleep environment sets you up for restful sleep.

If you struggle with insomnia or sleep issues, speak with your doctor. They can assess for underlying causes and recommend treatment options. Establishing healthy sleep patterns may require consistent effort, but the long-term benefits for longevity are well worth it.

Ways To Improve Mental Health for Longevity and a Longer Healthspan

Here are effective, evidence-based strategies to nurture your mental health and extend your healthspan:

  • Stay Active: Engaging in aerobic exercise triggers neurotransmitters that elevate mood and ease stress. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
  • Stay Social: Spend time with friends, family, and your community to fight off feeling lonely.
  • Relax: Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness , meditation , yoga, and tai chi are effective in managing stress and anxiety.
  • Get Outdoors: Being in nature, getting sunlight, and breathing fresh air can really help your mental health.
  • Challenge Your Mind: Activities like reading, puzzles, crafts, or playing musical instruments help keep your brain sharp as you get older.
  • Give Back: Volunteering and helping others can make you feel good and connected to your community.

Prioritizing emotional well-being will have major dividends when it comes to your longevity. A holistic approach is ideal—combine lifestyle strategies with professional treatment if necessary.

Optimizing sleep and mental health can significantly increase your healthspan and longevity. Luckily, there are many evidence-based ways to improve your sleep and strengthen your mental health. Start incorporating the tips in this article and you’ll be well on your way to your healthiest years ahead.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Essay (550+ Words)

The greatest wealth is our own health. In today’s fast-paced world, where the pursuit of material wealth often takes precedence, it is crucial to recognize that the greatest wealth we possess is our own health. While a healthy body can contribute to financial success, the reverse is not true—an affluent individual cannot easily attain good health. The demands of modern life and the accompanying stress have been linked to various medical conditions, particularly heart and neurological problems. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle becomes paramount, as a healthy lifestyle assists an individual to keep a positive attitude toward work and life in general.

One of the fundamental pillars of a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet that supports overall well-being. A nutritious diet consists of essential components such as liquids, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and calories. We must eat fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, dairy products, and other wholesome foods at regular intervals. Additionally, meals should be consumed at fixed times, in appropriate quantities, and should consist of well-cooked and hygienic ingredients. Avoiding fried and fatty foods, excessive spices, and roadside eating helps minimize potential health risks. Maintaining a sufficient gap between meals allows for proper digestion.

Physical activity is another integral aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular exercise and incorporating daily physical activities contribute to overall fitness. Alongside exercise, adequate rest and sleep are essential for rejuvenation . A clean and healthy environment, fresh air, access to clean water, personal hygiene, and drinking an ample amount of water—approximately 7-8 glasses per day—further support good health. These practices help regulate blood pressure, supply vital nutrients efficiently, and enhance the body’s immunity against infections and diseases.

The importance of health over wealth should not be underestimated. Splurging on indulgences like junk food or entertainment might provide temporary satisfaction but offers no real advantage. Being physically and mentally healthy helps an individual to be socially and financially healthy as well. A healthy person possesses greater vitality, energy, and efficiency, while an affluent yet unhealthy individual easily succumbs to fatigue and loses out on life’s true wealth—health.

A healthy individual can achieve financial success due to their motivation, interest, and higher levels of concentration. While money facilitates a healthy lifestyle, it is good health that truly allows for a happy and peaceful existence. Therefore, it is imperative for everyone to prioritize a healthy lifestyle, steering clear of bad habits and unhealthy choices.

By nurturing both physical and mental health, individuals can excel in their personal and professional lives, regardless of their chosen vocation. The significance of maintaining good health cannot be overstated. Being healthy isn’t only the condition of being free of disease, ailment, or injury but also being happy physically, mentally, socially, intellectually, and financially. Good health is not only a prerequisite for a contented life but also nature’s most precious gift.

In conclusion, the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle should take precedence in our lives. While material wealth may hold importance, it pales in comparison to the invaluable asset of good health. By prioritizing nutritious diets, regular exercise, sufficient rest, and adopting healthy habits, individuals can enhance their overall well-being, leading to a happier and more fulfilling existence.

10 Expert Tips On How To Live A Longer, Healthier Life

By Kathleen Baird-Murray

What is the secret to–if not eternal life, then a long one, that’s also well-lived? Kathleen Baird-Murray asks the experts for their tips on how to live longer and prioritizing your health.

1. The goal: 10 extra years of a life you love

“We have improved longevity,” says Professor Tim Spector OBE, genetic epidemiologist, author of The New Science of Eating Well , and the scientific co-founder of ZOE , the personalized nutrition company “but we haven’t really improved health span.” There’s a lot that medical science can do to save your life, but for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, dementia, strokes, and cancers, we need to be better equipped at helping ourselves. Spector argues that it can be slow to getting a diagnosis and treatment, with the real reason for cancer statistics going up having more to do with the fact that our lifestyles are getting worse. “The best thing we can do is change our mindset. Rather than just waiting for our bodies to fall apart, and then have slightly ineffective treatments, the mindset needs to be, “How can I have ten extra years of healthy life, of a life that I can enjoy?”

2. Knowledge is power

“Our genetic make-up is only a possibility of risks,” says Dr Sabine Donnai, founder and CEO of Viavi Health Strategy . “Think of it like playing cards. The hand you’ve been dealt with–your genetic makeup–is the cards, so play it cleverly. That starts with looking at your cards, and understanding the rules of the game.” Her own four “non-negotiable” rules are: avoiding sugars, supplementing with Vitamin D and Omega3, maintaining (or increasing) muscle mass and meditation. Donnai advises her patients to opt for two types of tests when seeking an understanding of their longevity potential: those that measure the onset of chronic disease (glucose, insulin, GSP, low density lipoprotein or cholesterol, body mass index and blood level indicators of inflammation); and those that measure different biological ages, for which she favours the Dunedin speed of ageing test. Ask your doctor for an annual blood work check up; or book in with Dr Donnai herself.

3. Take a longevity holiday

Equally, you could multi-task your annual holiday with a trip to a longevity-spa and take advantage of the medicalized, diagnostic-focused, wellness programs designed to maximize our health just when we’re at our most relaxed. The downside–optimum health and stunning locations come at a price, and it’s not a cheap one–but on Vogue’s list of dream health destinations are: Mayrlife, and its pioneering personalized diets, medical support, and anti-inflammatory programs designed to slow down biological aging, while in the spectacular surrounds of Lake Altaussee in Austria; Burgenstock Hotel and Alpine Spa in Switzerland, with its state-of-the-art diagnostic tests set to a backdrop of the dramatic Lake Lucerne. There’s also SHA Wellness and its healthy aging consultation complete with telomeric length and senescence immune profiling, as well as their delicious and world-renowned macrobiotic menu, while Six Senses Ibiza and its RoseBar longevity programs where over a period of one, three or seven days their medical experts help you discover new ways to feel revitalized, via nutritional support, exercise, biohacking, as well as specific treatments around advanced longevity science; or the exquisite Palace Merano , in Italy, with its new Revital Detox for Longevity program, where Traditional Chinese Medicine and the latest in western science are combined with a nutritionally balanced menu in a bid to find balance between body and mind. With panoramic mountain views and endless nature trails to walk along, it’s both relaxing and life-changing.

4. Avoid ultra-processed foods

Keep your gut healthy by eating 30 different plants a week to ensure you have plenty of diversity within your diet, says Spector, who also prioritizes the four k’s–kefir, (sauer)kraut, kimchi, and kombucha, which have all been shown to reduce inflammation. Meanwhile, avoid processed foods at all costs. Here’s a wake up call: the mere fact of eating ultra processed food increases your risk of death by 29 percent according to a report in the American Journal of Epidemiology “Ultra-processed foods have such a detrimental effect on our health, all our lives,” says Spector. “And that’s because it’s affecting our gut health. We don’t have the full data yet, it’s still fairly new, but if you combine the epidemic of ultra-processed food and our lack of gut health, these have the biggest impact on our health span and lifespan.”

5. A smoothie for life

“This smoothie always makes me feel great, I’m full for hours and it feels nourishing for my body,” says Rhian Stephenson, the Nutritional Therapist and Naturopath who founded the supplements brand ARTAH. Stephenson swears by blood sugar management, food quality, and what she calls a “longevity-focused cleanse” twice a year, where she focuses on cellular repair and rejuvenation, to keep healthy.

Each of the smoothie ingredients has a part to play. A few slices of peeled turmeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory qualities; one tablespoon of chia seeds provides amino acids and fiber; one avocado is a healthy source of fat; two medjool dates add fiber; three handfuls of mixed dark frozen fruit and a handful of greens are rich in vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. Stephenson also adds a dose of Artah Cellular Hydration , for essential electrolytes, extra Vitamin C and adaptogenic Maca. Blend with 250 mls of water and 250 mls of plant milk, adding more water if needed. Serves two.

6. Look after your teeth

Look after your teeth; gum disease, an indicator of chronic inflammation, is increasingly linked to a wide range of health problems, from Alzheimer’s to heart disease and diabetes. Dr Milad Shadrooh , Oral-B Dentist Ambassador, recommends brushing with an electric toothbrush twice daily for two minutes before breakfast and then again before bed at night as well as once-daily rinsing with a good mouthwash, and once-daily flossing using interdental brushes or an oral irrigator. “You also need a good toothpaste with the right amount of fluoride–1450ppm for adults–as this will reduce the potential for tooth decay,” he says. “It is important not to swallow the toothpaste, but instead to spit out the excess. Don’t rinse afterwards, that way the fluoride continues to protect the teeth.”

As well as avoiding sugar in your diet, smoking–including vaping–is a big no-no. “We are now starting to see research that shows the negative effects of vaping on our oral health. Those who smoke are at a much higher risk of developing gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.”

7. Weight training is key

“As the years go by, you need to try harder to keep up your muscle mass,” says Dr Donnai. “Weight training will increase your growth hormone production, as well as collagen, sex hormones, energy, and help you to destress and keep your body fat down.”

8. Ice, ice baby

From plunging your face in cold water (I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re prone to broken capillaries or rosacea) to cold showers, to state of the art cryo-chambers, there’s an ice bath out there for you. With increasing evidence that controlled cold exposure can reduce inflammation and increase longevity, Lakes by Yoo now offers guided cold water immersions as part of the new wellness development program to invigorate and kick-start the metabolism. The Ice Bath by Brass Monkey is set to below two degrees, with 15-30mm sheets of ice released in cycles, so you’re bathing in ice rather than just ice-cold water.

9. Relationships have an impact on your health

“An often underestimated longevity factor is social engagement,” says TCM practitioner, Dr John Tsagaris , “as loneliness and social isolation have been linked with a higher risk of chronic diseases and premature death.” But beware the fear of being alone if it keeps you in an unhappy relationship for longer. “Staying with someone who is destructively critical and unkind is debilitating for psyche and soma,” says Jane Haynes . “Whatever our relationship status is, we all–from birth to death–need people to communicate with and ideally have at least one intimate relationship where we can drop our mask and be recognized in our vulnerability. Nobody likes waking up alone in the dark with a panic attack but is it even worse if there is someone there who couldn’t care less?”

10. Goodnight, sleep tight

Do as yogis do and push the cyclic pattern of negative attitudes far away so that tomorrow will be an even better day. “It’s an uncompromising step to developing a long life,” says Sandeep Agarwalla Premananda, Head of Yoga at the Ananda in the Himalayas. He suggests a Review of the Day–where we “watch” our days’ actions and behaviors before going to sleep. “The practice makes you aware of your limitations and puts a conscious break to negative patterns.”

Nutrient sequencing explained: How the order of eating certain foods can impact health for some

Dr. Jen Ashton sheds light on the recently buzzy trend.

Nutrient sequencing has garnered massive online attention as a dietary trend that focuses on the science of eating specific foods in a specific order to potentially improve one's health.

"We've heard that what you eat is important, we've heard when you eat is important -- obviously how much you eat. Nutrient sequencing takes that to a macro nutrient level, really looking at the three components of [healthy] fats, proteins and carbs, fiber," ABC News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton explained of the concept first reported by the New York Times.

PHOTO: A plate with roasted salmon is seen in an undated stock photo.

"There is some data that actually suggests that if you preload your meal and start with the fiber -- which could be raw vegetable -- then move to the lean protein and healthy fat, and then at the end go to the carbs -- like bread or pasta -- that it can stimulate that [glucagon-like peptide 1, or] GLP-1 hormone," she continued.

Ashton, who also has a master's in nutrition, said that data has shown to be "more compelling for people with Type 2 diabetes, but certainly people who have had their stomach made smaller can benefit from this, [and] also just people trying to eat more mindfully."

This eating method can be important for those with diabetes and other medical conditions, like someone easily impacted by sudden blood glucose spikes such as reactive hypoglycemia -- recurrent low blood sugar after a meal -- or those with postprandial hypotension, low blood pressure after eating.

PHOTO: Grilled chicken is seen in an undated stock photo.

While it could be potentially beneficial to other people to minimize glucose spikes , more research is still needed to understand and quantify those benefits because the data isn't clear if the potential benefit is worth shaking up a diet, especially if one's current diet is working.

As with any nutrition trends, individuals should consult a primary care doctor before making any changes to their diet.

Ashton also said that anatomy and physiology can also play a role in the efficacy of nutrient sequencing because of digestion and thus varying blood sugar levels.

World Health Day 2024: 9 Lifestyle Habits That Can Help You Live Longer

World Health Day 2024: Aim for a body mass index (BMI) within the healthy range (18.5-24.9)

World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated annually on April 7th. It is organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise awareness about a specific health topic of global concern and to mobilise action to address health issues affecting people around the world.

Ensuring longevity often involves a combination of factors including genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. While genetics plays a role in determining lifespan, lifestyle habits can significantly influence overall health and longevity. In this article, we discuss the many lifestyle changes that can help boost longevity.

Here are some lifestyle habits that can contribute to longevity:

1. regular exercise.

Regular physical activity helps to maintain a healthy weight, strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system, improve circulation, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week.

2. Healthy diet

Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients, antioxidants, and fibre to support overall health and longevity. Limit intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and excessive amounts of sodium and saturated fats.

3. Adequate sleep

Quality sleep is essential for physical and mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow your body to rest, repair, and rejuvenate. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, avoid caffeine and electronic devices before bedtime, and maintain a comfortable sleep environment.

4. Stress management

Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on health and longevity. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or spending time in nature. Cultivate hobbies and activities that bring joy and relaxation.

5. Maintain social connections

Strong social connections and a sense of belonging have been linked to improved mental health and longevity. Stay connected with friends, family, and community members through regular interactions, activities, and support networks.

6. Limit alcohol consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of liver disease, cardiovascular problems, and certain types of cancer. Limit alcohol intake to moderate levels, which is generally defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.

7. Avoid tobacco use

Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide and is associated with numerous health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disorders. Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke to improve longevity and overall health.

8. Regular health screenings

Regular health check-ups and screenings can help detect potential health issues early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. Follow recommended guidelines for screenings such as blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, mammograms, and colorectal screenings.

9. Maintain a healthy weight

Obesity is a significant risk factor for numerous chronic diseases and can shorten lifespan. Strive to maintain a healthy weight through a combination of balanced diet and regular exercise. Aim for a body mass index (BMI) within the healthy range (18.5-24.9).

Friendships matter.

Is there a secret to living a better and happier life?

In The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness , Robert Waldinger, M.D., and Marc Schultz, Ph.D., co-directors of the Harvard Adult Development study, write, “Positive relationships are essential to human well-being.” This finding, drawn from the Harvard Adult Development Study, which began in the late 1930s, echoes something we humans have known for millennials. The authors quote Lao Tzu, who wrote 2400 years ago, “The more you give to others, the greater your abundance.”

Building Relationships

Relationships, according to Waldinger, are not merely external. “If you think about it, you carry around many people you care about inside you all day long. You can call up a warm image of a friend or a loved one. And so in that sense, we carry them around. You carry around a warm image of somebody who may have passed away a long time ago. So it’s often useful to think about how we carry people with us as we go through the world.”

Fostering good relations with others can depend upon what the authors call "the power of generosity.”

In our recent interview , Waldinger said, “Research tells us that when we are generous, we feel better and happier. We feel like our lives are more meaningful. So when we help people, we take care of ourselves… We know that being generous makes us feel like our lives are better.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, helping ourselves.

One practical element, among many, in the book is the W.I.S.E.R. model (Watch. Interpret. Select. Engage. Reflect). “Wiser model is really just a way of slowing things down when you have a challenging interaction, particularly with another person.” As the authors write, imagine you receive an email from your boss at 5 p.m. saying he wants to meet you at 9 a.m. The intent of the email is ambiguous. “And the problem with our wonderful minds doing that is that we can often create a story that isn’t true when we get this kind of challenging stimulus from somebody else.”

Waldinger says, “Don’t jump to conclusions, don’t reply right away if you don’t have to. But just think, okay, what might be going on? What am I assuming and what do I actually know for a fact?”

“When you receive an angry email or an angry text and you want to reply right away with something, and that’s the time to stop and slow down,” Waldinger says. “Take a moment, take a breath, or count backwards from five back to zero. Just anything to interrupt the swirl of thoughts. Think about it.”

Addressing Loneliness

Loneliness is an epidemic in our country, and according to the U.S. surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, it is a health issue. In a health advisory issued by his office in 2023, Murthy wrote that beyond health hazards such as cardiovascular disease and dementia, “the harmful consequences of a society that lacks social connection can be felt in our schools, workplaces, and civic organizations, where performance, productivity, and engagement are diminished.”

Fostering a sense of belonging is an essential antidote to loneliness. Human resource professionals need to address this issue more seriously in the workplace. Leaders must show the way by “being interested in other people’s lives, curiosity about your colleagues and your workers. It means modeling vulnerability and not knowing. It means modeling, learning to get help from other people, all that as part of enhancing relationships with other people.”

Valuing Others

Good relationships are essential to a life well-lived. We must find ways to connect that benefit others and, in turn, ourselves. It is important to be open to possibility of deep connection. It’s good for you and your life. The authors write in their concluding chapter that it is essential to realize that “the good life is not a destination. It is the path itself, and the people who are walking it with you.”

“Keep reaching out to people, email people, text people regularly saying, just thinking about you, wanting to say hi or checking in about how they’re doing,” Waldinger says. “For the people who are really important, make regular dates with them. Make sure that you have a once a month lunch with that friend who you don’t want to lose touch with no matter what.” Recognize their contributions to you and let them know it.

Patients Hate ‘Forever’ Drugs. Is Wegovy Different?

The new obesity drugs might be an exception to a chronic, deadly problem: the failure to stick with medication.

Most people, study after study shows, don’t take the medicines prescribed for them. It doesn’t matter what they are — statins , high blood pressure drugs , drugs to lower blood sugar , asthma drugs . Either patients never start taking them, or they stop.

It’s a problem that doctors call nonadherence — the common human tendency to resist medical treatment — and it leads to countless deaths and billions of dollars of preventable medical costs each year.

But that resistance may be overcome by the blockbuster obesity drugs Wegovy and Zepbound, which have astounded the world with the way they help people lose weight and keep it off. Though it’s still early days, and there is a paucity of data on compliance with the new drugs, doctors say they are noticing another astounding effect: Patients seem to take them faithfully, week in and week out.

Some patients may have to get over an initial reluctance to start. A national survey showed that when people were told they would gain weight back if they stopped taking the drugs, most lost interest in starting them.

In one small study, patients stopped refilling prescriptions for months at a time, perhaps because of side effects, lack of availability, or insurance and cost issues.

But anecdotally, doctors and patients say, those who begin taking the drugs are continuing.

“I don’t intend to ever stop taking this medicine,” said Kimberly DelRosso of Pembroke, Mass., who takes Wegovy.

She has never forgotten to take her weekly injection. By contrast, she says, she often neglected to take the blood pressure pills she was prescribed when she weighed more. (Now, after losing weight with Wegovy, she no longer needs them.)

So far, doctors report that like Ms. DelRosso, most of their patients intend to take the obesity drugs forever, and many are thrilled when they stop needing other drugs.

Dr. David Cummings, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington and the director of a weight management program at the V.A. Puget Sound Health Care System, records his patients’ experiences with Wegovy and the diabetes drug Ozempic. So far he has prescribed the drugs to about 1,000 patients. At most 5 percent stopped because of side effects, he said. Others stopped because their insurance no longer covered their drug or because they couldn’t find a pharmacy that had it in stock, reflecting persistent shortages of the drugs.

But those who stop generally do not do so voluntarily, he said. Other doctors who prescribe Wegovy agreed.

“Compliance is exceptional,” said Dr. Diana Thiara, medical director of the weight management program at the University of California, San Francisco. “People take it. They ask for refills. They take it on trips.”

An Epidemic of Nonadherence

There’s a price to pay for neglecting to take prescription drugs. An astonishing 40 to 50 percent of people who are prescribed medicines for chronic conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes fail to take them — and incur at least $100 billion in preventable medical costs annually as a result. This lack of compliance is estimated to lead to at least 100,000 preventable deaths each year.

Even a heart attack may not be enough to scare people into taking the current arsenal of cardiac drugs, shown to prevent heart disease deaths. Some studies show that just half of people who had heart attacks were still taking drugs to protect their heart two years later.

“These patients have seen the bright lights, ridden the ambulance, gotten rescue P.C.I., given their families secondary heart attacks, glimpsed the Pearly Gates, but still don’t seem to take their statins and beta blockers,” said Amitabh Chandra, a professor of public policy and business administration at Harvard.

Even doctors stop taking their meds, defying the hypothesis that people do so because they don’t really understand their importance.

And while cost plays a role, at least one study found that even when drugs are free, adherence can be abysmal.

One reason seems to be a sort of ingrained reluctance to take something that reminds people every day that they are sick, or so many patients might perceive it. Especially with what experts call “forever” drugs, taking them each day makes some patients feel abnormal.

“People think they are doing fine, so they don’t need the medicine,” said Corrine Voils, a social psychologist at the University of Wisconsin who studies medicine compliance. “But the medicine is what is keeping them well.”

Jalpa A. Doshi, a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, said patients make their own personal value judgments: “The medicine has side effects, requires co-pays, and the act of taking a daily pill reminds me that I’m sick. But I don’t have symptoms — I don’t see my high blood pressure or high cholesterol.”

“And what are the benefits?” she added. “I really can’t see the benefits. I could eat less salt and fatty food and do more walking or exercise,” instead of taking these drugs.

These assessments that patients do in their heads “make it much easier to stop,” Dr. Doshi said.

That describes Mark Anthony Walker, 61, of Dublin, Calif., whose experience with heart disease is shadowed by a troubling family history — his father died of a massive heart attack at age 47, his mother at age 48.

When he was 26, Mr. Walker had a cholesterol level of 360.

“I was terrified,” he said.

He has taken statins on and off ever since and is taking one now. But he does not plan to take it forever. He has come to the conclusion that his brain needs cholesterol. As for taking a drug for the rest of his life, “I am completely against it,” he said.

Instead, he believes he will be able to control his heart disease — even reverse it — with a rigorous diet, exercise and vitamins.

Mr. Walker’s cardiologist, Dr. David J. Maron, the director of preventive cardiology at Stanford, gently encourages him and others like him to take their medicines. But, as doctors know, if they storm in guns blazing, their patients will just go elsewhere.

Less Stigma, Less Shame

So what might be making the obesity drugs different? For one, while doctors are usually the ones to recommend drugs like statins or blood pressure drugs, patients are often asking doctors for obesity drugs. Many have spent a lifetime trying any diet and exercise program they could find, and every time they lost weight, they gained it back again.

Also, people who start taking the new obesity drugs can’t easily hide if they stop taking them: The weight they lost may come back, along with the stigma and shame and self-blame that often accompanies obesity. That makes these drugs very different from most others.

“You don’t get a big sign on your chest saying, ‘Blood pressure medication stopped,’” said Dr. Walid Gellad, a professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh who studies medication adherence.

On the minus side, though, the obesity drugs are expensive and often require doctors to fill out burdensome pre-authorization forms for insurance. The drugs have consistently been in short supply around the country. Those impediments can make them difficult to get.

Other drawbacks of the drugs include side effects like nausea and gastrointestinal issues, as well as the way they are administered — patients have to inject themselves with the drugs once a week.

In a study at the Cleveland Clinic, Hamlet Gasoyan and his colleagues examined the electronic health records of 402 patients at sites in Ohio and Florida who were taking Wegovy or Ozempic for obesity. They found that only 161, or 40 percent, had continually refilled their prescriptions over the year. Side effects, availability, or insurance and cost issues may have played a part.

But there’s a reason patients are willing to call dozens of pharmacies looking for the drugs and most faithfully inject themselves every week: Without obesity, they feel that they look better and are viewed differently. No longer are they shunned or shamed. No longer do people stare at their grocery cart or comment when they eat a bowl of ice cream. The embarrassment and self-blame and never-ending stigma of obesity are gone.

That’s a big factor for Ms. DelRosso.

People with obesity “are treated differently,” she said, adding: “It’s just awful how people discount you because you are heavy.”

But she also delights in the health effects. She no longer has sleep apnea or high blood pressure, and her blood sugar, which was edging toward the diabetic range, has fallen.

“I no longer have to take any meds,” she said.

Except, of course, Wegovy.

A Close Look at Weight Loss Drugs

Taking on Weight Stigma: Oprah Winfrey, a prominent figure in the conversation about dieting and weight bias, tackled the rise of weight loss drugs in a new prime-time special . In December, she shared that she was taking a medication to manage her weight.

Beyond Weight Loss: Wegovy is now approved for a new use: reducing the risk of heart attacks , strokes and cardiovascular-related death in adults who have heart disease and are overweight.

Pregnancy: Doctors say they are seeing more women try weight-loss medications in the hopes of having a healthy pregnancy. But little is known about the impact of those drugs  on a fetus.

Muscle Loss: As drugs like Ozempic become increasingly popular for weight loss, more doctors and patients are looking for ways to counteract the muscle loss that can happen on these medications. Companies are racing to meet that demand .
