How to use paragraph connectors in English

What are connectors in English used for? Connectors or linkers can help you join two or more ideas (sentences), allowing you to have a more structured and harmonious delivery. Instead of using single sentences, you can connect them in a logical way.

In this article, you’ll learn about different types of connectors in English (contrast, cause, purpose, effect, addition, illustration, etc.) that will help you achieve optimal communication. 

This type of connector is used to create continuity in the text between two clauses that present contradictory ideas.

Also known as causative connectors, these are used to explain the reason behind something.

Your are marked on ideas, supporting ideas, developing ideas, but not numbers. The examiner is not going to check statistical data in task 2. The examiner is marked Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Vocabulary and Grammar. This means writing numbers does even help your score that much. Which is better: 1) 75% of people in urban areas feel public transport could be improved. 2) The majority of people living in urban areas feel the public transport could be improved. The second option boosts your vocab score. It is a simple essay based on relevance, not stats and research.

It is a misfortune that IELTS mandates the use of linking words for high scores. Especially at the beginning of sentences, linking words quickly tire the reader being pushed around.

If linking words tire the reader, they are not being used properly. You are being tested on using them flexibly in a way that supports the reader.

Hi Liz, Can you allocate me some of the pre-ready templates which can be used as a topic statement in starting of the paragraph.

I do not provide them because they are the worst thing to do for your IELTS essay. IELTS does not accept memorised language and the higher band scores are all about flexibility, not templates. Writing task 1 is more formulaic than task 2 because task 1 is a report and most reports are pretty standard. But writing task 2 is all about creating unique sentences connected directly to the topic. This website is about learning and preparing for IELTS the right way.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean as you’ve provided no examples. However, to help understand: The writing test is formal. So, this means all informal language will cause you to lose marks. The only exception is the informal letter in GT writing task 1. The speaking test is informal and you can use all types of language and be as casual as you want in chatting to the examiner. But language should be used naturally, not poetically or in an overemphasized manner. You should talk as though you were talking to a friend.

They are informal and Writing Task 2 is formal.

It is an option but some examiners think it is too informal. There are no rules in IELTS which have word lists that lower your score. It is examiner interpretation. I do not teach this linking word for a conclusion, but other teachers do. This is why it is in the list. My recommendations are recommendations, not rules.

They will certainly help you develop your writing, but they won’t help you develop your writing for IELTS.

I wonder if I am allowed to use specialized words in writing task 2 (as long as they are related to the task rubrics and the usage and the collocation is contextually appropriate). For instance, if the topic of the essay is “imprisonment”, am I allowed to use words like “criminals set free might resort to recidivism”? what happens if the examiner doesn’t know that term? I already know that IELTS guidelines demand that the underlying assumption in the writing exam be the candidate is writing for an academic “non-specialist” reader. Is this fact in contradiction with using technical terms?

It is not a case of being allowed or not allowed. It is about how you use language. If you are pushing high level words into your essay for effect, the language in the essay will become unnatural and will be marked down. So, never aim to impress. However, your example is completely fine. The word “recidivism” is an appropriate word to use for that sentence. Certainly not many candidates will know this word, but it is 100% accurate and appropriate. So, my advice is to use language naturally with the right intent and appropriacy based on your level of English. The examiner will not be specialised in law or other fields – bear that in mind. Your aim here is to hit band score 8 or 9, not to showcase specialised vocabulary. This is a basic English language test, not a test of legal language for example. Pay attention to the context of the essay – it isn’t an essay for a university degree in law. You don’t need to use specialised language to achieve your aim in IELTS. I would not recommend using such specialised language that a layperson would not understand. That isn’t an IELTS rule, it is just logical – use such language as is appropriate for the audience and the context.

There are no rules about this. Linking is about being logical. I personally use these linking words for within the paragraph to add more information. When starting a new body paragraph I tend to use something more flexible, such as “Another point to consider is ..” – basically indicating the start of a brand new point rather than additional information to an existing point.

Best using them within paragraphs. To each paragraph, try: Firstly, Another point, Finally. But to be honest, you can’t learn formulas like this for task 2. It all depends what your ideas are as to what linking words to use. You need to learn flexibility if you want a high score. Yes, you should use a good range of linking words in your essay.

“For one”, is informal and not suitable for IELTS essays. Be flexible with your use of linking devices but stick with formal ones.

That question usually comes from speaking part 1. In part 1, they are relatively short answers – not deep discussions. The examiner would interrupt this answer. Just be direct and then add a bit more for part 1: “I’d change the sanitary conditions because … ” – then add one of two more sentences. Be chatty, not formal. You really need to start paying attention to what each part of the speaking test is like. There’s no point developing answers that aren’t appropriate to the section of the test. Your answer would be possible in part 3.

It is not necessary to start a paragraph with a linking word. You are right. It needs to be less mechanical. You can actually start your body paragraph with any word you want. Just make sure it is coherent and cohesive.

Linking words should not be repeated. You are being marked on your ability to use a range. However, words such as “and” or “but” are naturally going to be used a few times. Words such as “for example” can be paraphrased as “such as” or “namely” or “for instance”.

It isn’t about being old fashioned at all. It’s about flexibility which is what the examiner is looking for. It’s fine to use them inside one paragraph to show support points. It isn’t flexible to use them at the start of each body paragraph – that is called being “mechanical”, which means using them like a machine – that is a characteristic of band 6 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Hi Liz, I hope, you are doing good. Actually, I appeared for ielts exam today but due to poor time management, I was not able to complete task 2 of writing. I wasted a lot of time on Task 1. I know, because of this, I would not be able to score 6 or more than that, as the task 2 holds more weightage. So, I have applied for the exam again. I have some concerns regarding writing section, I don’t know about the proper use of punctuation, especially commas. Also, sometime I write out of the context in essay writing. Please could you provide me some help with this. I would be really thankful.

The use of commas is simple. Just them to divide appropriate clauses. Punctuation is marked, but not at a high level. The main point is that commas are used in clauses, correctly and that full stops are used at the end of a sentence. Also that sentences are not too long. A very long sentence shows lack of punctuation because the person isn’t controlling the length of sentences. For ideas, it’s all about planning properly. Thank you so much for the response 🙂 So, is it okay, if we use short sentences instead of long? Using them won’t be a reason to deduct marks? And, what about the complex sentences? Would it be advisable to attempt task 2 first and then task 1, as it carries more weightage, because I always face the issue of time management but I am working on it.

A complex sentence does not need to be very long. It just needs to be a sentence which is not simple – this is a way the sentences are categorised for IELTS examiners, not for grammar books. Having short, simple sentences is not a good idea if you are aiming for a higher band score. You need to show control and a good range of sentence structures. I am currently writing an e-book which is a Grammar List for IELTS Writing Task 2 – I’ll post a notice when it’s finished and ready to buy.

I don’t recommend doing as you are planning. It makes it difficult to identify paragraphs and can be confusing for the reader. Just try to keep your handwriting as clear as possible so that the examiner can read it. Practice, practice and do more practice. Yes, you can ask for extra paper. Usually you just put your hand up and then explain you need more paper. But I have heard from one student that they wasted precious minutes waiting for the extra paper.

It is normally best to take the test when you repeatedly get the score you want in practice tests. To improve English in just 20 days is a challenge. I can only suggest you decide what your main grammar problems are and deal with them one at a time. For vocabulary, review common topics for speaking ad writing – you can find word lists on google.

Just “4 5”. You don’t need punctuation. Just make sure the numbers are easily read and separate. If you write “4 to 5” is would be marked wrong. Liz

You can use those phrases if they help you explain your ideas but they won’t necessarily give you a higher score. In part 1, you must answer quickly and directly so don’t use them. In part 3, you might use them to explain your ideas. The most important thing is to speak naturally. All the best Liz

I just want to ask about the appropriate answers for a listening practice test 🙂 The questions are about ticket prices: $30 (1)…, or (2)… return According to what i heard, (1) is “one(-)way”. So is this written with or without a hyphen? For the second blank i heard “$45 in return” . so should i write down “$45 in” into the blank or just “$45” ? Thank you for your help.

One-way has a hyphen. For your second question, always look at the example they gave you. If the first one is “$30 one-way” then the second one must be “$45 return”. Always check the grammar. For note, form or table completion, grammar is rarely involved. All the best Liz

You put your opinion in the introduction, if the instructions ask for your opinion or for you to answer a direct question. If the instructions don’t ask for your opinion, don’t give it. You use them as you want. They can order your paragraphs (although that is slightly mechanical) or you can use them to order supporting points in any paragraph you wish. Liz

Just be direct and don’t try to learn phrases – the examiner isn’t impressed by students who purposely learn phrases to boost their score and will not award points for it. You can use “In my opinion” or “I think” or “I agree” for task 2. You can also find a lesson on my task 2 page about how to give your opinion. For speaking, it is informal so you can use a range “I suppose”, ” I guess” or “I reckon” or “I think” etc. All the best Liz

Hi Liz, My ILETS exam was on the 4th of July and today I got my results’ message (listening 6, reading 6, writing 5.5, speaking 6.5). I am really shocked by my speaking and listening results. Do you you think I will get any new result if I reject and apply for remarking?

Listening rarely changes with a remark because it is marked by right or wrong answers and mistakes almost never happen. For speaking, band score 6.5 means you make more than a few mistakes in your grammar and vocabulary or possibly that your fluency is strong enough to be able to talk at length without effort. It is possible to get a remark for speaking but looking at your writing, it is even lower. So, it doesn’t give confidence that your score will go up with a remark. Dear Liz I have recently found out about your videos and website and I deeply appreciate your effort. I am preparing for an Academic module in a limited time so I found your lessons and instructions very useful to manage my studies. Although I am still struggling with Reading skill.

The key to reading is to spend time understanding the language in the questions and thinking about paraphrasing before you try and find the answers. The more time you spend with the questions, the quicker it is to find answers. You should also be writing down a list of paraphrases from all reading exercises you do. Lastly, spend time planning a strategy for each question type and learning which questions have answers that come in order. Sorry but that is not the right way to approach IELTS. The examiner is trained to spot learned sentences and you will lose marks. The sentences you should aim for are based on grammar structures or tenses: clauses, conditionals, prefect tenses, gerunds etc. Just review your grammar structures. All the best Liz

Linking words – How to improve your writing

Linking words, also known as linkers, cohesive devices, connectors and transition words, are a vital part of writing. Often when we teach English, we feed vocabulary and phrases to students which, if we’re not careful, can start sounding forced. For me, linking words are the exception to that. I find that a solid lesson with these special words can almost certainly help improve a students writing regardless of the level. It’s not just because it appears in writing marking scales for every official exam there is, it’s because they actually work. Without linking words, texts can feel dull and disconnected. That’s definitely not the image we want to give when trying to prove our level of English.

What are linking words?

There are linking words and phrases for different purposes. You can find exhaustive lists of linking words examples all over the web, but the important thing is using them to good effect.

If your writing was like the human body, the content words would be the flesh and the paragraph structure would be the skeleton. Linkers are like the joints of your writing. They help to connect the different parts together and interact with each other. An essay with good cohesive devices will flow and be easy to read. In fact, it’s practically impossible to write without them. You can do a fun writing activity with a consequences game in another post .

Linking words at different levels

Let’s use Cambridge writing scales as a guide for what we should be using at different levels. At B1 Preliminary (PET) candidates are expected to use basic linking words. Basic linking words are essentially and , so , but and because . At B2 First (FCE) level, a variety of linking words should be used. While by C1 Advanced (CAE), candidates are using cohesive devices to generally good effect.

Although the terminology shifts between levels, the concept is the same. An exam candidate’s writing should be connected together in a way that makes it flow from one section to another using words that help to achieve said outcome. Notice that it’s not until C2 Proficiency (CPE) level that candidates should be able to use cohesive devices with flexibility.

Linking words examples

There are so many transition words you can use in your writing, but having a ridiculously long list isn’t the best option in this case (and I’m normally a big fan of lists). When I teach writing, I tend to focus on a selection of common and useful linking words. These can be associated with their purpose. Words similar to and are used to add additional information. Words similar to but are used to contrast ideas. Words similar to so provide result and those similar to because develop reason.

This list is not exhaustive, but it’s enough for 90% of learners who are using linking words in English. These are good cohesive devices for an essay, a formal letter or a report. They can be used in a wide range of styles and contexts. Keep in mind that linking words and phrases are also a strong indication of formality in a text, but they aren’t the only factor.

The other essential factor to consider with linkers is how to use them in a sentence. Different ones need different grammatical structures surrounding them. This is what the activity below focusses on in detail.

The materials

There is little doubt that any exam preparation course will include a lesson on producing cohesive writing. These materials associate complex linkers with simple comparison words before putting them to use. We’ll consider both the meaning and the use of linking words and phrases. The topic focuses on money and wealth, which can pop up anywhere from B1 level onwards. Use them to improve writing skills, especially in formal writings like essays, reports and proposals.

Types of Linking Words

In this section, we will discuss the three main types of linking words: coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and correlative conjunctions.

Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions are used to connect two or more items of equal importance. They are also known as FANBOYS, which stands for For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So.

Here are some examples of coordinating conjunctions in use:

  • I want to go to the beach, but it’s raining outside.
  • She is studying hard, so she can get into a good university.
  • Do you want pizza or pasta for dinner tonight?

Subordinating Conjunctions

Subordinating conjunctions are used to connect a subordinate clause to a main clause. The subordinate clause is less important than the main clause and cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Here are some examples of subordinating conjunctions in use:

  • Although it was raining, we decided to go for a walk.
  • I will call you when I arrive at the airport.
  • Because she was feeling sick, she stayed home from work.

Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions are used in pairs to connect two items of equal importance. They are used to show a relationship between two ideas.

Here are some examples of correlative conjunctions in use:

  • Either you can come with me, or I will go alone.
  • Not only did she finish her work, but she also helped her colleagues.
  • Whether you like it or not, you have to attend the meeting.

Linking Words for Addition

When writing in English, it is important to use a variety of linking words to connect your ideas and make your writing flow smoothly. In this section, we will cover some of the most commonly used linking words for addition.

The word “and” is one of the most basic linking words for addition. It is used to connect two ideas that are similar or related. For example:

  • We went to the store and bought some groceries.
  • The weather was warm and sunny.

“Also” is another common linking word for addition. It is used to add information that is similar or related to what has already been said. For example:

  • I enjoy playing basketball. Also, I like to watch it on TV.
  • She is a great singer. Also, she plays the guitar very well.

“Moreover” is a more formal linking word for addition. It is used to add information that is not only related but also emphasizes or strengthens the point being made. For example:

  • She is not only a great singer but moreover, she is an accomplished songwriter.
  • The company not only increased its profits this year but moreover, it also expanded its market share.

Using a variety of linking words for addition can make your writing more interesting and engaging. By connecting your ideas smoothly, you can help your readers follow your train of thought and better understand your message.

Linking Words for Contrast

When we want to show a contrast between two ideas, we can use linking words. These words help to connect two statements that are different from each other. Here are a few common linking words for contrast:

We use “but” when we want to show that two ideas are different or opposite. For example:

  • I wanted to go to the beach, but it started raining.
  • She’s a great cook, but she doesn’t like to bake.

We use “however” to introduce a contrasting idea. For example:

  • The movie was really long. However, it was also really interesting.
  • She’s not very tall. However, she’s a great basketball player.

On the Other Hand

We use “on the other hand” to introduce a contrasting idea that is different from the one we just mentioned. For example:

  • I don’t like coffee. On the other hand, I love tea.
  • He’s not very good at math. On the other hand, he’s a great writer.

Linking Words for Cause and Effect

In English, we use linking words to connect ideas and show the relationship between them. One common type of linking word is for cause and effect. In this section, we will cover some of the most commonly used linking words for cause and effect.

The word “because” is used to show the cause of something. It is often used to explain why something happened. For example, “I couldn’t go to the party because I was feeling sick.” In this sentence, “because” shows the reason why the person couldn’t go to the party.

The word “therefore” is used to show the effect of something. It is often used to indicate a logical conclusion based on the information presented. For example, “I studied hard for the exam, therefore I got a good grade.” In this sentence, “therefore” shows the logical conclusion that the person got a good grade because they studied hard.

The word “consequently” is used to show the result of something. It is often used to indicate a cause and effect relationship between two events. For example, “The weather was bad, consequently the game was cancelled.” In this sentence, “consequently” shows the result of the bad weather, which was the cancellation of the game.

Using Linking Words in Sentences

In the Beginning of a Sentence

Linking words can be used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a new idea or to connect it to the previous one. Here are some examples:

  • In addition , we should also take into account the economic implications of this decision.
  • On the other hand , some people argue that this policy will have negative consequences.

In the Middle of a Sentence

Linking words can also be used in the middle of a sentence to connect two ideas or to add more information. Here are some examples:

  • The government needs to invest in renewable energy sources,  such as  wind and solar power.
  • The company is expanding its operations,  therefore , it needs to hire more employees.
  • The new regulations will affect all businesses,  regardless of  their size or industry.

At the End of a Sentence

Linking words can also be used at the end of a sentence to summarize or to draw a conclusion. Here are some examples:

  • We need to take action to reduce our carbon footprint.  Otherwise , we will face dire consequences.
  • The company has implemented several cost-cutting measures.  As a result , it has been able to increase its profits.
  • The research shows that there is a strong correlation between exercise and mental health.  In conclusion , we should all make an effort to stay physically active.

In conclusion, linking words are an important tool for any English speaker or writer. They help make your sentences more coherent and easier to understand. By using them correctly, you can improve your communication skills and express your ideas more effectively.

It is a good idea to occasionally use linking words and phrases at the start of a new paragraph. They can help to link what you have said in the previous paragraph to what you are about to say in your new paragraph.

There are an almost limitless number of linking phrases and words one can use. What is important is that they complement the style of your writing.

Use these examples to arouse your creativity.

Remember that you don’t have to use them all the time. Using words like, ‘therefore’ ‘subsequently’ ‘moreover’ etc. for every new paragraph would probably become repetitive and detract from the key component of most academic work – critical analysis.

Finally, remember to succinctly, identify the key paragraphs and/or sections of your essay during your introductory paragraph. Then restate them along side an unambiguous position in your concluding paragraph. Again this will help to communicate a clear and understandable progression and structure, to those who read or mark your essay.

Discourse markers (‘linkers’) are words or phrases that we use to make links between words in a sentence. These discourse markers are used in both spoken and written English.

Here we will focus on discourse markers in writing and formal spoken English – commonly known as ‘linking words’. Linkers are a way of making connections between ideas and sentences.

Formal and informal linkers

Informal linking words are used in spoken English. You can link your ideas with words and phrases like: I mean , honestly , after all , besides and in any case . It is useful to learn which linking words are most appropriate in formal and informal situations. In an email, you might choose linking words such as so , but , and because . These should already be familiar.

In an essay, you are more likely to choose formal linkers, such as therefore , however , consequently, on the contrary and moreover . There are some linking words that are so formal that you may choose not to use them at all in your writing. Examples include: thus , hence and nonetheless .

Linking words and sentence position

Many linking words are used at the beginning of a sentence, while others can be used in the middle or at the end. Words and phrases connected with sequencing and structure appear at the start of a sentence. Examples include: first , secondly , finally and in conclusion . Adverbs, which express the writer’s opinion, also occur at the start of a sentence, for example evidently and obviously .

Linking words can be used between clauses, in the middle of the sentence. Examples include: words that contrast ideas ( however , although), show consequence ( therefore, as a result), and phrases that add more information ( moreover, furthermore) . A few linking words can be placed at the end of the sentence. Look at the following example: Learning a second language is motivating. It can be very difficult, however .

Punctuation

The use of punctuation with some linking words and phrases is important. Some grammar books provide you with specific rules about punctuation and clauses in a sentence. The most important reason for using punctuation in a sentence is so the reader can understand your intended meaning.

Punctuation, particularly commas , should help the reader to identify clauses in your writing and lead to a clearer understanding of the text. Look at these two example sentences – which is easier to understand?

Conjunctions are a familiar group of linking words, which join two clauses in a sentence, such as but , because or however.  In fact, linking words have many different functions in a sentence and range from single words to phrases of up to four words. Vamos hoy a compartir con vosotros una lista de linkers que puede venir bien a todos aquellos que estáis preparando exámenes oficiales de inglés, tanto de writing como de speaking. Primero encontraréis el linker, seguido de su traducción al español, más un ejemplo en inglés para que sepáis cómo utilizarlo y en ocasiones incluiré una explicación si el linker presenta alguna peculiaridad de uso que debáis conocer. Estos linkers son en su mayoría formales, es decir, muchos de ellos no los utilizaréis si mantenéis una conversación informal en inglés con un amigo en la calle, o si escribís un email informal a una persona que conocéis bien, pero sí os será necesaria para los writings y speakings de vuestros exámenes, cuando se os pida una redacción de carácter formal o un monólogo o speech sobre un tema en particular, como ocurre en los exámenes de Cambridge tipo First o CAE, en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, en Trinity con el ISE, etc. Vamos allá 🙂

  • BECAUSE OF / DUE TO / ON THE GROUNDS OF / ON THE GROUNDS THAT / OWING TO

Todos estos linkers significan lo mismo, «debido a» o «por». Cabe destacar que todos van seguidos de preposición, of y to, y como siempre sucede con las preposiciones en inglés, detrás necesitan verbo en ing si es que queremos incluir un verbo. Veamos las tres estructuras que podemos emplear con estos linkers:

  • + noun = Because of the rain (NOUN), we didn’t go out = debido a la lluvia, no salimos.
  • + verb in ing = due to having focused on her studies for so long, she lost contact with her friends = por haberse centrado en sus estudios tanto tiempo, ella perdió el contacto con sus amigos.
  • + the fact that + Subject + Verb + Complement = owing to the fact that the flight had been delayed, I was forced to sleep at the airport = debido a que el vuelo había sido retrasado, me ví obligado a dormir en el aeropuerto.

En esta última estructura es importante destacar que siempre que queramos introducir una oración, con sujeto, verbo y complemento, debemos poner «the fact that». No podemos introducir una oración detrás de una preposición, sin introducir «tha fact that». Para que se entienda mejor, pongo una oración que es incorrecta, para que sepas que ésto no se puede hacer: due to he was tired, he went to bed early = INCORRECTO porque tenemos una oración, he was tired, y justo delante una preposición, to, y como decía, es imposible poner preposición seguida de oración. La oración correcta sería: due to the fact that he was tired, he went to bed early.

En el caso de «on the grounds that», como la misma estructura incluye «that», después debemos poner la oración, porque that introduce oraciones. Ejemplo: on the grounds that she hadn’t been promoted, she decided to leave the company = por no haber sido ascendida, ella decidió irse de la empresa.

2. NEVERTHELESS / NONETHELESS / EVEN SO / DESPITE THAT / YET / HOWEVER

Todos estos linkers significan «sin embargo» y van a principio de oración y preferiblemente seguidos de coma. Ejemplos:

  • I know beans don’t appeal to you, children. Even so, you must eat them because they are good for you.
  • I would rather stay in. Despite that, I wouldn’t say no to his invitation.
  • It’s difficult to find a job in this country. Nevertheless, I would not emigrate if I were offered one in a foreign country.

Quizá te parece raro que haya incluido aquí «yet», con el significado de sin embargo, pero sí, yet significa «todavía», «aún» y «ya», pero también es un linker, sinónimo de todos los demás incluidos en el punto 2.

Seguro que however todos lo conocéis, pero como siempre aconsejo a mis alumnos, intentad utilizar nuevos linkers, no los que ya conocéis y que seguramente serán los más vistos. Debéis intentar sorprender a vuestro profesor/ examinador, y esto se hace con nuevo vocabulary, y con nuevos linkers.

3. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED / IN MY VIEW / TO MY MIND / THE WAY I SEE IT IS / FROM MY PERSPECTIVE

Sinónimos del archiconocido «in my opinion», que está muy bien y es muy correcto, pero como os decía antes, si estamos en un examen e incluimos «in my opinion», probablemente al profesor no le sorprende que hayamos utilizado este linker, pero si utilizamos «in my view», o «to my mind» o cualquier otro, puede que se nos valore muy positivamente, por tanto, a acontumbrase a estos nuevos. Ejemplos:

  • In my view, the situation will not improve.
  • To my mind, that film includes too much violence for children to see it.
  • The way I see it, measures should be taken if they really want to tackle the problem.

4. AS FAR AS SOMETHING IS CONCERNED / WHEN IT COMES TO / REGARDING / CONCERNING / AS FOR / WITH REGARD TO / IN REGARD TO / WITH REFERENCE TO/ IN TERMS OF

Como veis, mucha es la variedad que tenemos en este grupo, para expresar «por lo que respecta a». La variedad es necesaria cuando estamos en un examen porque así demostramos un gran dominio semántico, lo cual se nos valorará muy positivamente. Ejemplos:

  • As far as climate change is concerned, experts claim it should be a current issue in UN summits = por lo que respecta al cambio climático, los expertos dicen que debería ser un tema candente en las cumbres de las Naciones Unidas.
  • When it comes to unemployment, disadvantaged people should be taken into consideration = cuando se habla de desempleo, se debe tener en cuenta a las personas más desfavorecidas.
  • In terms of homework, many parents do not agree on the idea of giving too much = desde el punto de vista de los deberes, muchos padres no están de acuerdo en la idea de mandar demasiados.

5. IN ORDER TO / IN ORDER THAT / IN ORDER FOR SOMEBODY TO INFINITIVE / SO AS TO

Linkers que nos sirven para no repetir todo el tiempo «to» cuando queremos expresar «para», «con el objetivo de», «a fin de». Como vemos, de in order to tenemos variaciones, según lo que pongamos detrás. Os explico esto.

  • In order to + infinitive = In order to be promoted, you need to speak English fluently = para ascender necesitas hablar inglés de manera fluida.
  • In order that + Subject + Verb + Complemento = Several exams are taken every term in order that students can be assessed regularly = se hacen varios exámenes cada trimestre para que los alumnos puedan ser evaluados periódicamente.
  • In order for + somebody + to infinitive = in order for me to accept that post, I will have to be well paid = para yo aceptar ese puesto de trabajo, tendrán que pagarme bien.
  • So as to + infinitive = I will not tell him the truth so as not to offend him = no le diré a él la verdad para no ofenderlo.

El último ejemplo lo hemos hecho negativo para que veas que la negativa, not, se introduce delante de to, y lo mismo sucede con in order to.

6. TO SUM UP / IN SUM / IN A NUTSHELL / IN SUMMARY / ALL IN ALL / AS A WHOLE / BY AND LARGE / IN SHORT / ON THE WHOLE / ALL THINGS CONSIDERED / TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT

Linkers para concluir un writing o un monólogo. Los podemos traducir de distintas maneras: en conclusión, en resumidas cuentas, en líneas generales, en resumen, en conjunto, en definitiva, considerándolo todo, etc. Ejemplos:

  • By and large, I agree on the measures but I think we should speak about them in great detail = en líneas generales, estoy de acuerdo en las medidas, pero creo que deberíamos hablar sobre ellas en más detalle.
  • All things considered, we will focus on the way to spend our money = considerándolo todo, nos centraremos en la manera en la que gastar nuestro dinero.
  • In a nutshell, the situation has improved quite a lot = en resumidas cuentas, la situación ha mejorado bastante.
  • To cut a long story short, I won’t go = en resumidas cuentas, no voy a ir = informal English, no para escritos formales.

7. FURTHERMORE / MOREOVER / BESIDES / WHAT’S MORE / IN ADDITION / IN ADDITION TO

Con estos linkers expresamos «además» y deben ir seguidos de una coma. Los utilizamos para introducir nuevas ideas que no hemos mencionado anteriormente. La diferencia entre in addition e in addition to es que in addition va seguido de coma e in addition to va seguido de un sustantivo. Ejemplos:

  • I was required a degree and in addition, English and French =  me pidieron una carrera y además, inglés y francés.
  • In addition to my CV, I included a cover letter  = además de mi currículum incluí una carta de presentación.
  • He didn’t turn up and what’s more, he didn’t apologize afterwards = no apareció y encima, no se disculpó después = como vemos, what’s more tiene el signficado ése de queja, cuando en español decimos «y encima» porque algo no te sienta bien, te ha molestado algo, etc.

8. ALTHOUGH / EVEN THOUGH / EVEN IF / ALBEIT

Para expresar «aunque» tenemos estos cuatro. En significado, éstos tres significan lo mismo que «in spite of» y «despite», la forma es diferente, ya que éstos, salvo albeit, van seguidos de oración (Subject + Verb + complement) Ejemplos:

  • Even though we knew they wouldn’t come to our wedding, we invited them = aunque sabíamos que no vendrían a nuestra boda, los invitamos.
  • Even if I couldn’t speak good English, I would go to England to work because there are many Spanish people living there and they would help me = aunque no supiera hablar buen inglés, me iría a trabajar a Inglaterra porque hay muchos españoles viviendo allí y me ayudarían.
  • He apologizes, albeit late = él se disculpó aunque tarde = Albeit, aunque significa «aunque» como los otros, éste no va seguido de oración, sino de sustantivo, adverbio (late), preposición (she tried to talk to him, albeit without any success).

9. IN FACT / AS A MATTER OF FACT

Éstos dos significan «de hecho». Ejemplos:

  • I don’t like studying. In fact, I started doing a degree and gave it up after 3 months = no me gusta estudiar. De hecho, empecé a estudiar una carrera y la dejé después de tres meses.
  • I love reading. As a matter of fact, I read a book every week = me encanta leer. De hecho, me leo un libro todas la semanas.

10. ACCORDING TO / IN SOMEBODY’S WORDS

Linkers que podemos traducir por «en palabras de», «según», «como dice», etc. Ejemplos:

  • According to researchers, more money is necessary if we want new vaccines = según los investigadores, hace falta más dinero si queremos más vacunas.
  • In my brother’s words, who is a teacher, all students should go to a foreign country while they are studying = en palabras de mi hermano, que es profesor, todos los alumnos deberían irse a un país extranjero mientras están estudiando.

11. AS FAR AS SOMEBODY CAN REMEMBER / TO MY KNOWLEDGE

Éstos dos se utilizan para expresar lo que otra persona recuerda o sabe. Ejemplos:

  • To my knowledge, she has been sent to another city for work = según lo que yo sé, a ella la han enviado a otra ciudad a trabajar.
  • As far as I can remember, they are getting married soon = por lo que yo recuerdo, ellos se casan pronto.

12. WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT

Sin lugar a dudas, sin la más mínima duda. Ejemplos:

  • Without a shadow of a doubt, marriages are seen as a thing of the past = sin lugar a dudas, casarse se ve como una cosa del pasado.

13. LAST BUT NOT LEAST 

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante. Lo utilizamos para incluir una última idea, que es igual de importante que las anteriores y además quieres dejarl claro que también es importante. Ejemplo:

  • Last but not least, don’t forget to lock the door when you leave = y por último, pero no menos importante, no olvides cerrar la puerta con llave cuando te vayas.

14. CONVERSELY 

Este linker lo podemos traducir por «por el contrario». Ejemplo:

  • I love the beach. Conversely, my partner hates it = me encanta la playa. Por el contrario, mi pareja la odia.

15. WHAT WITH

Este linker se utiliza para expresar «considerando». Ejemplo:

  • I felt exhausted, what with waiting for my flight for so long and having to spend the night at the airport = me sentía agotado, considerando que tuve que esperar tanto tiempo mi vuelo y teniendo que pasar la noche en el aeropuerto. También lo podríamos traducir de la siguiente manera: me sentía agotado, al haber tenido que esperar tanto tiempo mi vuelo…

16. THUS / THEREFORE 

Por tanto, por consiguiente. Ejemplo:

It rained heavily. Thus, they decided to have the party indoors = Llovío mucho, por tanto, ellos decidieron hacer la fiesta dentro.

Conectores en inglés c1: aprende a utilizar los linkers como un pro.

Esta vez os traemos conectores en inglés C1 y sus sinónimos para que no tengáis excusa de no utilizarlos. Actually (de hecho), os recomendamos que intentéis utilizar bastantes en vuestro discurso y así ningún examen oficial se os resistirá. Moreover , los conectores o linking words , se utilizan con bastante más frecuencia en inglés por lo que cuantos más uses, más fluidez demostrarás. Conectores en inglés C1: qué son y ejemplos

Son palabras que utilizan para unir dos o varias partes de una oración.

En cuanto a conectores en inglés , si queréis conseguir el nivel C1 , en el Salón de Idiomas os recomendamos que dejéis de usar los típicos AND, BUT, SO, etc. cuando tengáis la ocasión pues cualquiera que tenga unos conocimientos básicos en inglés los conoce y utiliza. Cuando se dé el caso, prueba a emplear sinónimos y verás como tu speaking y writing tendrán un léxico más rico y más parecido a un nivel avanzado.

TIP: Otra forma de demostrar un C1 es utilizar ➤   adverbios en inglés de nivel avanzado .

Por cierto, no des palos de ciego en cuanto al orden de los linkers o conectores en inglés C1 . Por regla general tienen un orden establecido en la frase y casi siempre es al principio de la misma.

Linkers and connectors C1: lista y sus sinónimos

Aquí está la primera lista de conectores en inglés nivel avanzado . La tabla de abajo se divide en 2 partes: la primera incluye los conectores o conjunctions in English más usados y sus sinónimos, mientras que la segunda incluye un listado de palabras (algunos linkers, otros no) orientadas a ayudaros a variar vuestro léxico.

Por cierto hemos llamado a esta entrada Conectores en inglés C1 porque da sinónimos de nivel mas avanzado de los típicos «and, «but», «so», «because», sin embargo, si todavía no conoces tu nivel de inglés exacto, te recomendamos que hagas algunas de las pruebas de nivel gratis que tenemos en la plataforma de Salón de Idiomas (evaluarás tu nivel gramatical, de léxico y auditivo) pues son muy específicas.

Cómo practicar los linkers en inglés C1

Buena pregunta. Obviously , lo primero que has de hacer es intentar integrarlos paulatinamente en tu discurso. Estaría bien que tu profesor te corrija, te ayude a cambiar el hábito y empieces a usar sinónimos de conectores con los que no estés muy acostumbrado. Recuerda que los conectores en inglés dan coherencia y cohesión a tu producción oral y escrita y eso es fundamental en exámenes oficiales de inglés tipos Linguaskill , LanguageCert , Aptis o Trinity , entre muchos otros. De hecho, la coherencia y la cohesión son unos elementos fundamentales que se evalúan dentro de los criterios de evaluación en estas pruebas oficiales.

Secondly , te recomendamos que redactes writings (por ejemplo aquí puedes ver cómo redactar un artículo en inglés ). Cuando escribas, tendrás más tiempo para emplear linkers en inglés. Cuanto más redactes y más conectores uses, más los interiorizarás.
