Animate the background of your slides in PowerPoint for Mac
In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac, PowerPoint 2021 for Mac, or PowerPoint 2019 for Mac, you can add visual interest to presentations with animated backgrounds for your slides.
To get started creating an animated background, simply add a still image as your slide background, and then on the Picture Format tab, select Animate as Background .
Add motion to a still slide background image
Select the slide you want to add an animated background to, then go to Insert > Pictures , and choose either Photo Browser or Photo from File .
Select the picture you want, and then select Insert . You may need to resize the picture to fill up the slide.
On the Picture Format tab, on the far right end, select Animate as Background .
A dialog will open with a preview of your background picture.
Click on the parts of the picture you want to have the movement of your animated background focused on. When you're done selecting points of interest, click Apply .
To see your animations in action, view the slide in Slide Show mode.
To edit your animations, select the background picture and select Animate as Background again, and repeat step 4.
You can add text and other content to the slides over your background images, and they'll remain in place while the background moves behind them.
Note: While you can only create animated backgrounds in PowerPoint for macOS, they'll be able to play in other versions of PowerPoint.
Requirements
Animate as Background is only available if you have PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac, PowerPoint 2021 for Mac, or PowerPoint 2019 for Mac.

How to Create Moving Backgrounds in PowerPoint (Step-by-Step)
- PowerPoint Tutorials
- December 3, 2017
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to combine two PowerPoint animation tricks together to create moving backgrounds for your images in PowerPoint.
Animation trick #1: A combination of the Fly In and Split animations to create an interesting reveal effect.
Animation Trick #2 (Bonus): How to use a motion path on a background image to create a rolling background effect/
In the example I build out in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to reveal a majestic tower against a bright blue sky and then make the sky move in the background.
See the looping graphic below.

To learn more about creating PowerPoint backgrounds, and where you can get free ones, read our guide here .
Part #1: Setting up your picture
1. find a picture with good contrast.
The first step in this PowerPoint animation tutorial is to find a picture that has a nice clean contrast with the background (you don’t want your center object to be touching anything or blending into the background).
For this example, I’m going to use the picture of the tower below.
2. Remove the picture’s background
With your tower (or other image) selected, in PowerPoint 2010 or PowerPoint 2013, navigate to the Picture Tools Format Tab, and select Remove Background.
To remove the background, you want to adjust the frame around the center object of your picture, in this case the tower. The purple area is what will be removed from the image; the colored area is what will remain within the image.
Depending on your picture, you might need to use the “Mark Areas to Keep” and “Mark Areas to Remove” commands to correctly remove the background.
Once the background is all purple, select keep changes.
Once you are done removing the background, you should be left with just the center object of your picture.
Part #2: Building your reveal animation framework
1. turn on the g ridlines.
2. Frame your picture
3. Adding your background image
4. Stretch your background image
5. Fill in the left side of your slide
6. Group the sky with the background rectangle
7. Duplicate your slide
8. Crop your background image
Part 3: Adding the PowerPoint animations
1. add the fly in animation to move your background.
2. Add effect options to the Fly In animation
3. Open the Animations Pane and adjust the Fly In animations
4. Add a Split animation
- Set the animation to Start With Previous so that it lines up with the frame animations we previously set
- Set the Duration to .5 seconds
- Set the Delay to 1.0 seconds
5. Add a black background to the right side of the second slide
6. Adding a Motion Path to the background image
7. Add a screen on the left side of the slide
Bonus moving background tricks
1. copy and paste the sky animation.
2. Copy and paste the Sky animation
3. Extend the window frame across the slide
4. Remove the window
5. Change the color tone of the sky
As you can see, what’s great about these techniques is that you can reuse these pieces or swap the out for others once you make them.
You can add a different sky (or a different background entirely) behind the window or the tower, for instance, once you have the background removed.
Or, you can use the sky with another window, such as a plane window, for example. You can also change the picture you’re revealing – so you can replace the tower picture for anything else that’s the same size if you add the same Split animation with the same timings.
Play around with these yourselves and see what other combinations you can come up with! If you enjoyed this tutorial, you can learn more ways to boost your PowerPoint skills here .

How to Create a Moving Background for Engaging PowerPoint Presentations
Sara Wanasek
Create a spectacular Microsoft PowerPoint presentation by adding in a moving background. You can turn any video into a moving background, so get creative and use a video that will help students further understand and later recall your lesson!. There are many ways to create engaging PowerPoint presentations , and adding a moving background is a favorite trick!
Moving backgrounds in PowerPoint may seem intimidating, but it does not need to be left for PowerPoint pros! It can actually be done very easily. You only need some basic PowerPoint knowledge and have a video in mind to use. Then, you will have no issue incorporating a background that moves into your next presentation. Let’s get started! For a more visual walkthrough, watch the video at the bottom of the page!
How to Create a Moving Background in PowerPoint:
Step 1: add a video to your slide.
The first thing you will need to do to create your moving background is to go to the Insert tab in the PowerPoint ribbon and click on Video . Here, you have two choices: to upload a video from your device or to insert an online video .
When inserting an online video, paste the URL from any Youtube video. In this example, we will upload a video we already have from our device. Select the video from your files and click Insert .
Step 2: Resize & Move Video
Once the video has been placed on your slide, you can move and resize it. To create the moving background effect, move the video so that the top left corner aligns with the top left corner of the slide. Then, drag the bottom right corner of the video all the way to the bottom right corner of the slide. Your video should now take up your whole slide.
Step 3: Send Video to the Back
The next step here is to have this video be the background of your slide so that any text or images appear on top of the video. To do this, right-click on the video and select Send to Back. Now, you should see any objects on your slide appear on top of the video.
You can preview this in Presentation Mode to see if you like the way it looks. To edit the timing of the video, follow Step 4.
Step 4: Edit Playback & Format Options
After a quick preview of your video, you may want to make some formatting and playback changes. To do this, click on the Playback tab of the Video Tools tab in the PowerPoint ribbon.
1. The first change that we highly recommend, is to Loop your video. This way, when the video is over, it will replay right away without you having to click again. In the Video Options section, check the box next to Loop until stopped. Your video will now play until you change slides.
2. Next, we recommend having your video start automatically so that you do not have to click on the slide for it to begin. In the Start drop-down menu, choose Automatically . Some teachers may choose to leave their video to start with a click if they want to wait to begin the video. Choose the option that works best for your lesson.
3. Lastly, PowerPoint has some simple video editing tools, like trimming that you can use. If you want to cut some of the beginning or end of your video, click the Trim Video button. Then just drag the bar at the beginning and the end of the video to how you want it.
Feel free to explore the other editing options here to make your moving background perfect for your own presentation!
Step 5: Annotate on your Video
Once all the edits are done, and you have previewed your video ensuring perfection, you are ready to use this in your classroom! With PowerPoint, and more accessibly with the add-in, ClassPoint , you can use annotation tools to write over your video. This will help to call out information & help students understand in a new, clear way.
With ClassPoint, you gain a toolbar on the bottom of your slide, that adds user-friendly, yet advanced annotation tools including different colored pens, shapes, and text boxes, you can annotation right on your slide. And when you presentation is over, you can choose to keep or remove any added presentations.

How-To Geek
How to animate a still slide background in microsoft powerpoint.
Include a subtle moving background for some pizzazz.
Quick Links
Animate an image background in powerpoint.
It's easy to improve the appearance of your Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow by including an attractive background . You might use a color, gradient, or pattern, or insert an image . Another way to make your background appealing is by animating it.
If you use Microsoft PowerPoint on Mac, you have the option to animate a still slide background. This adds subtle movement to the image, so it doesn't distract from your slideshow or its message.
As of February 2022, this feature is only available in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac and PowerPoint 2021, 2019, and 2016 for Mac.
To set an image as an animated slide background in PowerPoint, you simply start by inserting the picture on your slide. If you already have an image on the slide you want to use, you can skip the first step below.
Related: How to Control When a Picture Appears in PowerPoint
Go to the Insert tab and select the Pictures drop-down box in the Images section of the ribbon. Choose where you'd like to add the image from: Photo Browser, Picture From File, Stock Images, or Online Pictures.
Select the image on the slide and head to the Picture Format tab.
Click "Animate as Background" on the right side of the ribbon.
A window will appear prompting you to select the important points on the image. These points determine the motion path for the animation.
Click to select each point. The path will move from the highest number to the lowest. When you finish, click "Apply."
The image will be automatically resized to cover the entire slide as the background. So if your image is portrait instead of landscape, you'll need to resize or crop it .
To view the animation, go to the Slide Show tab and pick "Play From Current Slide."
You'll see your image move very slowly, from your highest number point to your lowest. Again, this is a subtle animation which makes it nice if you have text or other elements you're speaking to on the slide.
To edit the motion path, select the image, return to the Picture Format tab, and pick "Animate as Background" as you did initially. Then, click the new path you want to use and hit "Apply" to save the change.
By adding a subtle animation to your slide background, you can give a little extra pizzazz to your slideshow or automatically move to a key part of the image.
Here’s a Cool Way to Animate Your Slide’s Background in PowerPoint

Animating a slide's background in PowerPoint is easier than you think it is.
You can have an animated background in five minutes flat. All it takes is to know what to look out for, what settings to use, and how you position all the different components in the slide.
So, in this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to animate your slide's background. For this example, I'm going for those summer vibes and will be playing around with a pool of water.
VIDEO TUTORIAL
Animate Your PowerPoint Slide's Background
Here's A Rundown Of The Steps
1. grab a video.
Go ahead and grab any video that you think would be perfect for your background. Just be sure it's one that's in a high resolution format.
Also, depending on where you get your video from, just be sure you follow any licensing terms that come with one you've chosen.
Golden Tip: If you're looking for a free resource for high quality stock videos, then check out Pixabay . They have awesome videos, all for free, and with generous licensing conditions.
HEADS UP: Keep in mind that adding a video to your PowerPoint deck will increase the file's size. So pick your videos with caution.
2. Create a foreground
Use PowerPoint's shapes, text boxes and their Merge Shapes functions to create your very own foreground.
If you're lost and have no idea where to start, be sure to check out the video - I'll reveal how I did everything step-by-step, and you can take it from there.
Just remember: your foreground has to be one shape. Again, the video will go over that in a little more detail.
3. Tune the video's settings
Okay, so you have a foreground, and you have your video.
Well, we're going to have to tweak the video's playback settings.
Here's the thing: The default video playback settings for PowerPoint don't exactly allow you to 'wow' your audience.
When you launch your presentation in Slide Show view, the default option is to have the video play in the background only if you initiate the sequence (e.g. hit the space bar, use the clicker, or whatever).
Also, once the video is played and has run its course, it just stops playing. And that's kind of awkward when we're looking for an effect that dazzles .
This means that we're going to tweak just a few settings and automate the video to play the second the slide comes up in Slide Show view, and make sure the video keeps playing even if it's done .
So here's what you'll need to do:
- Click on your video
- Under the Video Tools tab, go to Playback
- In the Video Options section, change the Start feature to " Automatically "
- In the Video Options section, make sure you check " Loop until Stopped "
That's it. You're done!
4. Position your background video and foreground
This is fairly straight forward, but hey, this is a comprehensive tutorial for a reason.
Right click your video and send it back, and make sure your foreground is placed directly in front of it.
Now, sit back and watch the magic happen when you hit the Slide Show button.
And We're Done!
All we did was take a video, made a few shapes, tweaked a few settings and moved things around for an awesome effect that your audience is going to love.
If you use this technique at a presentation, let us know! We'd love to hear about it.
totally awesome

You’re here because you want to add some flair to your PowerPoint presentation and the default PowerPoint backgrounds available in the standard themes don’t do it for you. Fair enough, they’re bland, boring, and featureless. Then again, many of the PowerPoint backgrounds available for free download are cheesy or just outdated. Out of thousands, I picked 20+ of the most professional and elegant free PowerPoint backgrounds for instant download. Scroll down to see them, pick one you like best, and start creating!
Storydoc’s alternative to PPT
But first, give this a thought— You’re looking for PowerPoint backgrounds because you want to make your presentation more exciting. Why not take it a step further? With Storydoc, you can use our easy editor and create an interactive, animated presentation in minutes. Just see what it might look like:
Here's how a Storydoc presentation looks compared to a PowerPoint:

And now, onto the *beef*.
How to set a background in PowerPoint?
First, a quick tutorial on how to change the default PowerPoint background. (If you already know how to do it, feel free to scroll down to the following section.)
- Pick a slide you want to change the background in.
- Go to “Design” → “Format Background.”
- Select “Picture or texture fill.”
- Choose the file you want to use as your background.
- Click “Insert” in the Picture dialog box.
Then, in the “Fill” drop-down, you can adjust transparency and texture. You can also skip adding your own file and just go for a solid fill using the color of your liking, then tweak it playing around with different functions in the “Format Background” menu. You can try using different color combinations and color palettes that match the tone of your presentation or match your brand. Now, let’s get you some fine graphics that will bring your PPT presentation to life (even if just being there in the background:)).
The best PPT background images to download
Wave green (free)
Kicking off with “Wave green,” a free PowerPoint background that’s neither too fancy nor too basic. A good pick for presentations across different industries and use cases.
Retro black (free)
A minimalist, abstract PPT background brought to you by FreePPTBackgrounds. So, yes, you guessed it, it’s free to download!
Cute floral (free)
Designed by Malti Drago, this cute PowerPoint background will add a touch of spring liveliness to your presentation. Use it when you want your slide deck to give off this homely kind of vibe.
Low poly (free)
Designed by SlideModel and, again, 100% free to use, “Low poly” is a professional background based on an imitation of a 3D surface with some subtle color shading going on. A very neutral, eye-pleasing design.
Black waves (free)
Not all presentations can pull off a dark background but if you’re in a modern area of business such as tech, engineering, or digital marketing and want to put your game face on, the free “Black waves” PowerPoint background will help you do just that.
Blue art (free)
Note: the developers of this background, “Free-PowerPoint-Templates” don’t allow you to download high-res mockup pictures from their website so this one might look a tad blurry. Nothing to worry about, though, if you choose to download it, it will be perfectly sharp, just as its design is.
All the templates above?
Yeah, they’re pretty. But Storydoc gives you much more than nice-looking presentations.
We deliver real results.
Transform your static presentation with Storydoc and close more deals, improve engagement metrics, and increase your customer base. Like these teams did:
"...We've seen higher conversion, of up to x2 , among prospects who engaged with the Storydoc pages"
Boris Zlatkin
Digital Marketing Lead
"Using Storydoc helped us build a rich and engaging deck, effectively delivering the full scope and value of our streaming service TVNow Premium"
Dirk Hannapel
BD & Sales Director
"...Since we've started using Storydoc our sales accelerated, increasing our customer base by more than 70% . It became an integral part of our sales funnel, helping us score new deals."
Red-blue-green (free)
A bit retro, a bit corny, and a bit 8-bit, but it still works! The RBG theme of this PowerPoint background will make it a great choice for all industries that have to do with image processing: TV, media, advertising, photography, graphic design, and so on.
Lens flare (free)
Okay, this one *is* from Microsoft and I still decided to include it in the gallery despite all of what I said about how “boring” their backgrounds were. This one is classy, subtle, and easy on the eyes and free to download from the Microsoft website itself.
Horizontal stripes (free)
Using this one as a background for all of your PowerPoint slides might backfire as the differently-sized horizontal stripes can feel confusing and make the text harder to read. It will work great as a background for summary or “main point” slides, though.
Lavender? (Free)
Okay, I’m not so great with plants but I do think this one is Lavender. (Is it? Feel free to drop me a line if it’s not). Either way, a tasteful close-up of some nice flowers. Oh, and there’s a butterfly in there. Add a level of transparency to it, and you’ll have a very cute and professional look for a PPT background.
Stylish cartoon
Designed by Yasemin Yaldiz of Turkey (and part of a collection of 4 different illustrations), this background for PowerPoint feels mysterious and inviting at the same time. A very unique aesthetic will surely help make your presentation unforgettable.
A very simple idea executed to perfection. Splashes of bright paint on a dark background—looking cool and modern without trading off any of the perfect legibility.
Simple desk
This cute PowerPoint background brought to you by Slidefabric will be a great choice for corporate presentations. There’s the desk, very much Marie-Kondo-style, there’s the nice looking chair, you just *feel* yourself getting comfortable and productive only looking at this one.
Digital classroom
Any teachers in the house? Yeah, remote teaching is a pain, one that this fun PowerPoint background won’t necessarily heal on the spot, but I’m sure your students will appreciate the touch and feel this one can add to your presentations.
Pastel wallpaper
Okay, this is cheating a bit because the image on the left has actually been designed as a desktop wallpaper. Still, it’s beautiful while not being too distracting—that’s what makes a perfect PowerPoint background.
Blurred backgrounds bundle
Part of a bundle of 50+ similar-yet-different PPT backgrounds, all of those based on blurred splashes of color. A good pick for a funky, out-of-the-box presentation.
Fiery wallpaper
Yes, I did it again. Yet another wallpaper-turned-background, one that will work great for all the same reasons. Designed by HappyPastels, loved by all customers!
Customizable flowers
A pretty watercolor picture of flowers great for brochures, covers, or even business cards (yes, you can create all of those in PowerPoint). The bundle comes with a bunch of customizable text fields filled with different pastel colors.
Pastel rainbow
Another pack of PPT backgrounds on our list, this one created by Jax & Jake, containing 8 backgrounds with semi-transparent fill, 8 ones with white fill, and 8 transparent borders.
Fresh watercolor
Last but not least, “Fresh watercolor” by KaySquaredPrintables. A PowerPoint background I loved because it just feels so comforting and stylish at the same time. Plus, I think the dynamics of the flowers on the sides of the image are just perfect for creating well-balanced slides. A really neat piece of work.
And that's a wrap!
Hope you’ve found a PowerPoint background you fell in love with and one that will really captivate your audience. Just make sure to go for a design that fits the theme and vibe of your presentation. Cute little flowers wouldn’t work too well on a slide deck about war in Iraq, would they? But I’m sure you’d figure that out on your own. So why are you still here? Time to start creating!
