IELTS Writing Task 2: Leadership qualities

feel free to call us    +61.4.50973975      [email protected]

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people believe that the good leaders are born, whereas others hold the opinion that the leadership qualities could be obtained during the life. Who represents the good leader qualities indeed ?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

Leaders play a fundamental role in the development of every nation. Consequently, people who can lead are needed in every field. Although, there are some commentators who believe that leadership is an inherited skill, I am strongly inclined to the opinion that leadership qualities are acquired throughout the life.

The reasons for believing that leadership skills can be learned are many. Firstly, the unprecedented breakthrough in education technology has significantly increased the number of graduates who have leadership qualities. In fact, today's education strategy focuses on improving the skills of students as well as boosting their self-confidence. For example, a recent study conducted in London has shown that college graduates improved their decision making ability by around 20% after applying the new strategies learned in university programs.

management and leadership ielts essay

On the other hand, a strong argument can be made for the opposite view. To begin with, opponents state that the human characters and abilities related to leadership are present in the genes. As an illustration they claim that children of many well known world leaders show the qualities of leadership at a very young age. However, these examples are merely anecdotal and have never been proven scientifically.

To sum up, it can be clearly seen that leadership characteristics are acquired rather than inherited. I do recommend that the ministry of education involve the different programs that can implement leadership criteria in the curriculum of students of all ages.

IELTS Current Essay Question Jan 2015

Below is a an essay question that came in the exam this week.

Directors and managers of organizations are often older people. Some people say that it is better for younger people to be leaders. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

This is an opinion essay which means you must give a clear opinion in the introduction and then support it and explain it in the body paragraphs. Let me give you some ideas for this topic. If you have more ideas of your own, please post them in the comments box below.

Reasons why young people should be leaders

  • young people are usually more up-to-date and in touch with the modern world
  • they are often more dynamic and forward thinking which means they are more open to new ideas
  • young leaders are stronger and healthier than their old counterparts and therefore more able to cope with the demands of leadership

Reasons why older people should be leaders

  • with age comes experience and this is critical for any leader
  • older people have more authority which is needed to lead and manage others
  • a sense of responsibility is needed to lead effectively which is found in older people and often lacking in the young

If you recently did your exam, please post your full essay question in the comments box below so we can all benefit from it.

Why old should be leaders and young should not be the leaders and my conclusion. Please guide me. Totally confused. Thank you.

Academic curreiculum should invest on Art , agree / Diasagree. Art is considered to be essential partof our culture througout the world.Art is said to be trememdously beautiful way of expression.Art is a weapon for one who cannot express him self and his views verbally. Art idiom can be limitless, u cannot deny to say sky as your limits. However fewer and fewer people consider art as one of the passion compared to science, maths & tecchnology. Some believe art can be essential subject looking ahead for bright future while some consider it as waste of time. Handful of people will also agree to provide an artist freedom of thought & views. Several people assume government is wasting its funds in arts rather than switching it to some productive use. An artist hardly makes any income at the end of the day, so it would be great ideabto assist them with little funds which can eventually lead to thier upliftment. Such small investment may create hopes for artist empowerment in the society. To conclude an Art if taken care whole heartly will contribute for remarkable recognization in this compititive world. An art is superior levelof expressions.

Hi Liz, I’ve given the exam on 2nd June and my question for writing task 2 is ‘Nowadays for work reasons people move to other countries. Some consider it beneficial for children. Some says that children get harmed because of it.’ Discuss both the views and give your own opinion.

' src=

Some of the benefits of moving to a new location could be new language, different culture and new good friends while disadvantages lack of good educational facilities or facilities that support the interests and talent of the child. My opinion would be that, whether it is harmful or advantageous to the child depends on the age of the child. I hope this makes sense.

Directors and managers of organisation are often older people. Some oeople say that it is better for young people to be leaders. TO what extent do you agree or disagree? —————————————————–

Iam at stuck at one point and I need your help and advise. IF such agree/disagree essay comes in writing part, can I just write in my opinion that I agree that young people should be leaders and start giving reasons in body paragraphs?

Is it mandatory that I should write the reasons I disagree with older people as leaders?

Please advice. I really need your help.

Thanks Richa

In this case, you can’t ignore that this is younger people vs older people. So, if you agree then you believe leaders should be young, not old – you need to explain all of that and why.

Dear liz Thank you so much for your reply. Have a great day 🙂

Regards Richa

Could you please go through my essay and guide me if iam correct. I wrote it following your comments. Thanks !! ———————————–”———————-

In many organisations, the directors and managers temd to be older people because of their wisdom and experience. It is often thought by some that young leaders are considered to be better leaders. In my opinion, I agree that young leaders can be an asset to the organisation.

One of the most important reason that young leaders are better is that they welcome change. in other words, they are more receptive to make changes in the ild techniques as tume changes. as a result of lack of experience, they tend to be more optimistic to embrace change. TAke as an illustration, Facebook helps everyone to be connected virtually which is possible by its young leader, Mark Zuckerberg , who is just 32 years and is CEO and charmain of Facebook.

Secondly, young leaders are always in need of extensive feedback on their performanc. THis helps to make any necessary changes to be dine in their actions. Moreover, young leaders are more healthy and strong as compared to their old counterparts which helps them to accept challenges that leadership demands. Furthermore, tgese young leaders inspire otger people at work which helps organisation achieve its goals and objectives.

FInally, young leaders make continuous improvement to keep up with new ways of doing work and learning new technologies which helps team to achieve difficult tasks. As an illustration, a young leader , Nishan Rao, MD LinkedIn, India, who has stretched the goals of the company to make online work profiles of people across the globe.

In conclusion, young leaders are better as they are usually up to date and in touch with the modern world.

Dear Liz Hope you’re good!! It would be really helpful if you could advise on the essay above.

Thank you in advance.

Sorry I don’t comment on writing.

Hi Richa ! I think you read my mind for answering this essay , as I have the same problem of if I agree , do I need to specify one body paragraph for why I disagree with older leader . I know Liz reply your answer but still haven’t got it . Thanks .

You can’t ignore part of the issue. If you agree with young leaders, it also means you disagree with older leaders. Always write down exactly what you agree with and what you disagree with in note form before you start writing your essay. That way, you will be sure to include all information.

Hi Liz , my IELTS results just came and I would like to tell you are a Rockstar , thank you for every article/video you shared with us, but unfortunately the Speaking section’s score was a bit low 6.5 , the others , listening-8 , reading-8.5 , writing-7 , I was thinking of remarking the speaking section , what do you think ? please advise .

In your situation with just 0.5 to gain, you could try for a remark. However, only do so if you finished both task 1 and task 2 and you wrote over the word count in both tasks. Good luck and let us know if you succeed in gaining the extra 0.5. All the best Liz

Hi Liz, I have appeared in ielts 4 Times in acedamic version and I scored below 7 overall each time. This time I need to clear general test and need 6.5 in three module and 7.0 in listening and I got 7.5 in listening last time so I am not much worried about listening part but this I need you to help me in writing part by giving me some tips so that I can score at least 6.5 this time. Thanks in advance.

All tips and lessons are aimed at the higher band scores so everything is relevant for you on this blog. However, for more detailed essay writing lessons, see my course: http://subscriptions.viddler.com/IELTSLizStore All the best Liz

Hi Liz,I found your site very helpful.

' src=

Hi, I have give Ielts twice in this year on both time i got overall band of 6.5. My listening score is 8/7.5 reading 6.5/7, speaking 6.5/6.5. However, on both occasion my writing score was 5.5/5.5. I need to score at least 6 to apply for PR. Please suggest me how i can improve that score. Further, also suggest if I apply for remarking what will be probability of mark up gradation as I believe my writing is not as bad as my scores are. please suggest.

It might be possible to get 0.5 more in writing with a remark if you are sure you wrote over 150 words in task 1 and 250 words in task 2. If you wrote under, it is not worth getting a remark. Also you need to be sure you wrote a conclusion for task 2 and an overview for task 1. If you did these things, it might be worth considering a remark. To improve your score, you need to be sure that you are producing accurate language in writing and avoiding errors. If you are aiming to impress the examiner – that might be a reason for too many errors. Also you need to learn about the structure and content of writing task 1 and task 2. All the best Liz

' src=

I am also looking facing the same problem. As I am looking for PR, I need to score & in all. Can you share your number or email me at [email protected]

' src=

Hi Liz, I just have a question. If i agree with both the ideas of the question and i don’t want to agree any of them then can i describe about both the ideas? I mean to say irrespective of the age any potential person can be a leader. Is it ok if i explain in such a way. Regards Anzi

This is called presenting a balanced view. You need to be careful about doing so. You can’t agree with both sides at all. A balanced view is not about saying any person can be a leader at any age, it’s about presenting an alternative perspective. You need to say rather than looking at age, leaders should be chosen based on personality. You must give a clear position. I hope that helps. Liz

Leaders and directors in an organisation are normally older people – IELTS Writing Task 2 Argumentative Essays

IELTS Writing Prediction Questions for 2024

In IELTS Writing Task 2, students are asked to write a formal essay of at least 250 words, in 4-5 paragraphs based on the given writing task 2 essay topics. The task is similar for both Academic and General Training with regards to the type of questions and the scoring, but the topics given for General Training will be slightly easier than Academic. Given below is an argumentative essay with sample answers that will help you to practise and get a good score.

Academic IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic (in January, 2015):

Leaders and directors in an organisation are normally older people. Some people think having a younger leader would be better. Do you agree or disagree?

Band 8.0 Model Essay 1:

It is true that higher positions are usually held by older members in many organizations these days. While some people believe younger people would demonstrate better leadership, it is in my opinion that senior managers possess more advantages over their younger counterparts in leading a company.

To begin with, it is usually difficult for the young to compete with the old in terms of experience. those who have gained adequate experience can more effectively manage to lead the individuals of an organization than those who do not. The reason for this is that business matters often require the people in charge to have not only the knowledge of coping with problematic situations but also strong nerves to calmly find a feasible solution. As a result, years of experience in a relevant position tend to make the elderly better candidates than those who are relatively young and new to the tasks.

Another advantage belonging to aged people is that they are likely to receive more support from the people in an organization. As the time spent working with the staff of the senior is often longer, they can understand their colleagues better, achieving more popularity. It is interpersonal communication skills and approval of other people that can tremendously affect the success of a leader. Younger members, on the other hand, will need more time to make contributions over time to prove themselves worthy.

In conclusion, I believe that critical positions of authority should be given to senior staff members for the certain reasons mentioned rather than the young.

Useful Vocabulary & Expressions:

• Prevalent (adj): existing very commonly or happening often ==>Health problems such as obesity and diabetes are prevalent amongst young people in developing countries today. • To demonstrate sth(v): to show or make something clear ==>The problems of unsatisfactory productivity which Canadian workers are facing demonstrate the importance of enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in tertiary education. • Senior (adj) : older ==>Senior family members are expected to set an example to the younger children in order that these junior members can adopt good manners in their adulthood. • Leadership (n) : the set of characteristics that make a good leader ==>The lack of leadership in young and inexperienced directors can sometimes put the company in jeopardy. • Problematic (adj) : difficult to deal with or to understand; full of problems; not certain to be successful ==>Despite acknowledging the dangers of fast food, many consumers find it problematic to switch to a healthier food choice. • Feasible (adj) : that is possible and likely to be achieved ==>With the public support of abandoning polluting vehicles, the prospect of the improved air quality seems more feasible.

People have different views about whether older or younger people are more suitable for important positions in organisations. While I accept that old individuals have significantly important qualities, I believe younger ones are more likely to become good leaders.

On the one hand, elderly people can be good leaders for some reasons. Firstly, as old people have worked for many years, they have accumulated much more work experience compared to younger workers. This might allow them to make wiser decisions and bring success to the company they work for. Secondly, older people are often more respected by others. Therefore, they can have a more powerful voice within the company, and people are more likely to listen to them. If leaders are young, they might find it hard to influence other employees.

On the other hand, I believe it will be better if young people take up important positions. The first reason is that since young individuals tend to be physically stronger, they can handle big responsibilities and much work. Being a leader requires people to work with much pressure, and old people are often not capable of doing that. Additionally, younger people are usually more creative, so they are more likely to find newer and better improvements which benefit the entire organisation. For example, a young manager can come up with a new advertising strategy for a product, which contributes to the increasing sales of the company.

In conclusion, while I accept that old individuals can be good leaders of an organisation, I believe these important positions should be given to younger people.

  • accumulate: to gradually get more and more of something over a period of time ==>Children gradually accumulate knowledge as they grow up.
  • wise: sensible (example: a wise decision)
  • handle: to deal with a situation, a person, an area of work or a strong emotion ==>A new man was appointed to handle the crisis.
  • capable of doing something: having the ability or qualities necessary for doing something ==>He was barely capable of writing his own name.

Practice writing topic: It is better for young people to get advice from older people than young people. Do you agree or disagree?

IELTS Writing Task 2: A both-view/opinion essay about lead-positions in company by elders or youngers; with structure and 8.0+ model answer with explanations

This IELTS Writing Task 2 post deals with a both-view/opinion essay on a controversial topic which is ‘executive positions in companies or organizations by elders or youngers’ . The post contains the structures and notes to write the answer effectively along with a 8.0+ model answer and explanations.

IELTS Writing Task 2: both-view topic /opinion topic

Recent exam question:

Some people say that the leaders or directors of different organisations are often old people who can be replaced by younger people sometimes while others disagree.

What is your opinion about it, the structure of the essay followed:.

Paragraph no. 1:

Presentation of the topic, Thesis statement, and outline

Paragraph no. 2: Body paragraph 1:

Description of how aged people contribute in managerial positions; with real-life example,

Paragraph no. 3: Body paragraph 2:

Description of how young people contribute in higher positions; with real-life example,

Paragraph no. 4:

Conclusion of the topic by restating the thesis and personal opinion.

Model answer:

It is an undeniable fact that a good number of leaders and higher-ranking executives are generally older people. Aged people bring in a lot of special attributes to any organization and so their demand in different companies is noteworthy. Nonetheless, I believe that young people who show brilliance and talent in managerial works should be given opportunities in top positions in workplaces. This essay will focus on the benefits of both the cases and favour the latter group’s contribution over the former.

On one side of the coin, elderly people possess some special skills, if compared to their younger counterparts. Initially, their cognitive skills or long-term visions, due to their work and life experience, make them incomparable to the young workers. The aged people have learned to face challenges by failing and not giving up which has made their mentality and attitude as solid as a diamond. To explain, my late grandfather, who was a co-operative inspector, saved his company from some inevitable dangers only because he had experience and strong willpower on which his seniors took faith and gave him all the responsibilities and he served as was expected.

On the flip side, younger directors can also be considered as complement in vital positions in different companies and organizations. Principally, their enthusiasm, high qualifications and up-to-date knowledge on this 21 st century work-culture and the understanding of empathy with other workers and clients can be an added benefit for in big corporations. Furthermore, their acquaintance with state-of-the-art technology and the courage to apply them in company culture can reduce workload for all and this can neutralize any kind of typecast in management and develop productivity. As an example, all the tech-giants such as Google, Apple, Microsoft regularly employ young people in leadership positions.

In fine, I firmly believe that the selection of executive positions ought not to be based on age. A skilled person with firm determination and positive attitude, even though junior to many, can take companies to the pinnacle of success which has often been proved by younger people and the companies can be the beneficiary of this.

Word count: 350

Expected score: 8.0 +

Reasons explained:.

TA or Task response:

The model answer converses both sides of the argument in the same measure (discussion on how aged people and young people can contribute to company success) and finishes with a clear opinion (young people are a better force). The writer includes background information and examples. The essay meets the word requirement yet it’s not more than 360 words. (350 words to be exact).

CC or Coherence and cohesion:

The model answer is obviously planned to have 4 paragraphs, with everybody paragraph talking about a different side of the dispute. The connection between paragraphs is clearly indicated by words like On the one side of the coin , On the flip side and In fine . The ideas are expanded additionally with reasonable links such as Initially, To explain, As an example , Principally, Furthermore, etc .

LR or Lexical resource:

The writer uses higher-level vocabulary relevant to the topic such as revive, presume, alternative, numerous and interval. Words like relaxation and physical exercise have been systematically paraphrased. Spelling is correct throughout the model answer. Repetition of the same words has been avoided intelligently.

GRA or Grammatical range and accuracy:

The writer uses an extensive variety of grammatical features including concessive clauses (which, while…), relative clauses (who, that…), and other sentences with compound and complex forms. There are no grammatical errors in the model essay.

Passage: What Managers Really Do

In an ever-evolving business landscape, the role of a manager remains critically important yet widely misunderstood. Far from the traditional view of managers as mere overseers of workflows and team performance, modern management encompasses a broader spectrum of responsibilities, blending leadership, strategy, communication, and innovation.

Understanding the Role

At its core, the role of a manager is to ensure that an organization's objectives are met through the effective use of resources, including human, financial, and technological. Managers act as a linchpin between the strategic level of an organization and its operational frontline. They are tasked with interpreting the vision of the company's leadership and translating it into actionable plans that teams can execute. This process involves a deep understanding of the organization's goals, the competitive landscape, and the unique strengths and weaknesses of their team members.

Strategic Planning and Execution

One of the key aspects of management is strategic planning. This involves setting goals, determining actions to achieve these goals, and mobilizing resources to execute these actions. A manager's day-to-day activities might include developing project plans, assessing risks, and adjusting strategies based on real-time feedback and market conditions.

Communication: The Heart of Management

Effective communication is perhaps the most critical skill for any manager. This involves clearly articulating goals and expectations, providing regular feedback, and fostering an environment where team members feel valued and heard. A manager must be adept at both conveying their own ideas and listening to others. This two-way communication helps in building trust and aligning the team's efforts with organizational objectives.

Team Development and Leadership

Another vital aspect of management is team development. Managers are responsible for identifying and nurturing the talents of their team members. This includes providing training, career development advice, and opportunities for skill enhancement. By investing in their team's growth, managers not only improve the capabilities of their individual team members but also enhance the overall strength and adaptability of their organization.

Conflict Resolution and Problem-Solving

No day in a manager's life is without its challenges. Conflict resolution is a significant part of the job. Managers need to address disagreements and tensions within their team, ensuring a harmonious and productive work environment. This requires a deep understanding of human behavior, empathy, and the ability to remain neutral while navigating interpersonal dynamics.

Innovation and Change Management

In today's fast-paced business environment, a manager must be an agent of change. This involves being open to new ideas, technologies, and methodologies. Managers must lead their teams through changes, whether it involves adopting new software, shifting market strategies, or navigating economic shifts. This requires a mindset that welcomes innovation and the ability to manage the uncertainty that often accompanies change.

Ethical Leadership and Corporate Responsibility

Managers also play a crucial role in fostering an ethical work environment and ensuring corporate responsibility. They are expected to lead by example, demonstrating integrity, fairness, and a commitment to ethical practices. This includes ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, addressing any form of misconduct, and making decisions that reflect the company's values and ethical standards.

Balancing Stakeholder Interests

A manager must balance the interests of various stakeholders, including employees, customers, shareholders, and the community. This involves understanding the diverse needs and expectations of these groups and making decisions that align with the broader objectives of the organization while considering the impact on each stakeholder group.

The Manager as a Coach and Mentor

Increasingly, managers are taking on the role of coaches and mentors. This involves providing guidance, support, and feedback to help team members develop their skills and advance their careers. By acting as a mentor, a manager can help foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within their team.

Leadership vs. Management: What’s the Difference?

Leader Addressing Team During Business Meeting

  • 31 Oct 2019

The terms “leadership” and “management” are often used interchangeably. While there is some overlap between the work that leaders and managers do, there are also significant differences.

In a keynote discussion at Harvard Business School Online’s annual conference, Connext , HBS Professors Nancy Koehn and Joe Fuller explored the interplay between leadership and management and shared how they define the two disciplines.

Koehn referenced the work of HBS Professor John Kotter, who she said aptly defined the “activity of leadership.”

Leadership vs Management: What's the difference?

“ Leadership , he wrote, is the creation of positive, non-incremental change, including the creation of a vision to guide that change—a strategy—the empowerment of people to make the vision happen despite obstacles, and the creation of a coalition of energy and momentum that can move that change forward,” Koehn said.

Fuller, who teaches the online course Management Essentials , relayed his thoughts on how management compares.

“ Management is getting the confused, misguided, unmotivated, and misdirected to accomplish a common purpose on a regular, recurring basis,” Fuller said. “I think the ultimate intersection between leadership and management is an appreciation for what motivates and causes individuals to behave the way they do, and the ability to draw out the best of them with a purpose in mind.”

Watch the full keynote discussion between Nancy Koehn and Joe Fuller below:

While these definitions draw parallels between the roles of leaders and managers, they also allude to some key contrasts. Here are three differences between leadership and management.

Access your free e-book today.

How Is Leadership Different from Management?

1. process vs. vision.

Effective leadership is centered on a vision to guide change.

Whereas managers set out to achieve organizational goals through implementing processes, such as budgeting, organizational structuring, and staffing, leaders are more intent on thinking ahead and capitalizing on opportunities.

“I think of management as working with other people to make sure the goals an organization has articulated are executed,” says HBS Dean Nitin Nohria in an interview for the online course Management Essentials . “It’s the process of working with others to ensure the effective execution of a chosen set of goals. Leadership is about developing what the goals should be. It’s more about driving change.”

2. Organizing vs. Aligning

In the book, On Becoming a Leader , scholar Warren Bennis presents a list of key differences between managers and leaders , including:

  • The manager administers; the leader innovates
  • The manager maintains; the leader develops
  • The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people

Managers pursue goals through coordinated actions and tactical processes, or tasks and activities that unfold over stages to reach a certain outcome. For example, they may implement a decision-making process when leading a critical meeting , or when devising a plan for communicating organizational change .

Leaders, on the other hand, are less focused on how to organize people to get work done and more on finding ways to align and influence them.

“Your central function in a position of leadership is to mobilize others so they can execute a set of individual and collective tasks,” says HBS Professor Anthony Mayo in the online course Leadership Principles .

By developing a personal leadership style through self-reflection and honest feedback , leaders can learn how to empower their employees and inspire them to both believe in and pursue important organizational initiatives.

3. Position vs. Quality

The title “manager” often denotes a specific role within an organization’s hierarchy, while referring to someone as a “leader” has a more fluid meaning.

“Manager is a title. It’s a role and set of responsibilities,” says leadership coach Doc Norton in Forbes . “Having the position of manager does not make you a leader. The best managers are leaders, but the two are not synonymous. Leadership is the result of action. If you act in a way that inspires, encourages, or engages others, you are a leader. It doesn't matter your title or position.”

Leadership is a quality that needs to be shaped. Through developing emotional intelligence and learning how to influence others , professionals of all levels can build greater self-awareness and understand how to bring out the best in themselves and others.

For seasoned and aspiring managers alike, possessing strong leadership skills can not only lead to better job performance , but an improved knowledge of how to influence the context and environment in which decisions get made.

IELTS essay, topic: Education in financial management should be a mandatory component of the school program, agree/disagree (from Target Band 7 book)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

This essay was written on a topic from “Target Band 7” book (page 54, reprinted with permission).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task

Education in financial management should be a mandatory component of the school program. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include examples from your experience.

Write at least 250 words

management and leadership ielts essay

More and more young adults in our country are heavily indebted. Thus, it is considered by some that it should be mandatory to educate school children the administration of money. In my opinion, people should not leave school without a sound knowledge of financial management.

To begin with, a country’s development is strongly upon the purchasing capacity of its inhabitants. That is to say, people who are in debt or financially vulnerable, would not be able to spend freely or invest, for example, in a new house, thus hindering the economic growth of the country. As a consequence, the rate of inflation would rise and people would be able to afford even less, which could ultimately result in the collapse of the entire economy. A good example of this vicious circle can be seen in countries such as Argentina, where people have to buy household items in the black market, because they cannot afford to buy them in regular stores due to skyrocketing prices. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to teach children early money management.

Another point to consider is the low standard of living that people have when they mismanage their finances. Individuals who are constantly short of money could eventually end up being socially isolated and unhappy, because they couldn’t afford to participate in leisure activities, such as going to the cinema with a friend, resulting in their from social life. However, this could be avoided with ease by offering courses in money management.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that school children should be taught how to manage their finances to prevent social isolation later in their life as well as to maintain the economic force of their country.

The writer’s position is clear throughout the essay. Paragraphing is used effectively to organise ideas and information, however the paragraphs could have been balanced better in terms of the amount of content. The advanced vocabulary the writer uses creates a good impression of mature and fluent writer. Overall, the control of grammar and punctuation is fine, and the number of errors is small. The essay could achieve Band 8 in IELTS.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing section is a 1-hour test that comprises two questions: task 1 and task 2, which assess your vocabulary, grammar, word count, collocations, and ability to construct complex sentences with moderation and without repetition.

Table of Contents

To begin, it is pivotal to understand that the IELTS essay topics vary for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Tasks. In Task 1 of IELTS Academic, you must write a report on a graph, diagram or chart, whereas, for IELTS General Training Task 1, you must write a letter. Task 2 of the General and Academic modules is essay writing; while the topics for essays in both modules may differ, the essay writing strategy remains the same.

Examiners use the following criteria to calculate Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 scores: Task Achievement, Task Response, Coherence, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Lexical Resource.

IELTS Writing Task 2 for Academic

The IELTS Academic Writing section consists of two tasks that must be completed in one hour:

Writing Task 1

In Task 1, you are assigned a graph, visual information, table or chart, which you are required to describe in your own words. You must write a report in 150 words, accurately describing what the information in the graph or picture represents. The IELTS writing task 1 marking criteria accounts for 33% of the total IELTS writing evaluation score, and you should try to finish this part in 20 minutes or less because IELTS writing task 2 is more difficult and will take at least 40 minutes to complete.
