While many people may view self-care as a form of selfish indulgence, the act of caring for oneself is an important part of a person's overall well-being.

Many people do not fully understand what self-care means. Read on to find out more about what self-care is, examples of practicing self-care, and why it’s important for your mental and physical health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), self-care is being able to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.

The WHO also mentions that self-care is a broad term and many facets of a person’s life come into play, including:

  • Hygiene (general and personal)
  • Lifestyle factors such as exercise level and leisure activities
  • Environmental factors such as a person’s living conditions or social habits
  • Socioeconomic factors such as a person’s income level or cultural beliefs
  • Self-medication and following treatment plans for current illnesses

The main goal of self-care is to prevent or control disease and preserve overall well-being through consistently taking care of various aspects of your health.

For a person to practice true self-care, they must use personal responsibility and self-reliance in a way that positively impacts their health in the current moment and the future.

Overindulgence in spending

Binge-eating your favorite but unhealthy foods

Participating in activities that provide instant gratification

Going on expensive and lavish vacations

Perfecting oneself by any means necessary

Numbing bad feelings using alcohol or illicit substances

Binge-watching television

Prioritizing one's physical and mental health

What Types of Self-Care Are There?

Various forms of self-care involve different activities or actions. Each form is as important as the other and drives optimal health and well-being.

Physical Health

Taking care of your physical health is a form of self-care that helps improve quality of life and prevent or manage chronic conditions.

Physical self-care will be different for each person, but ways you can practice physical self-care include:

  • Getting the proper amount of exercise
  • Eating regular, well-balanced meals that are mostly whole foods and staying hydrated
  • Engaging in relaxing activities that can help manage stress
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Getting regular medical and dental care

Mental Health

Mental self-care is designed to drive a healthy mind by practicing brain-stimulating activities and healthy mental behaviors. Mental self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.

While no two people are the same, these strategies can help you manage stress and stimulate your mind:

  • Use relaxation programs or apps regularly to incorporate meditation, yoga, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. 
  • Practice gratitude by reminding yourself daily of things you are grateful for. Write them down at night or replay them in your mind.
  • Participate in creative activities you enjoy.
  • Read a book or do a puzzle.
  • Play games such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles, or other brain teasers.
  • Try a new hobby.
  • Engage in exercise.
  • Take adult education classes.
  • Seek help from a professional as needed.

Relationships

Having healthy relationships is a form of social self-care all its own. Research has shown that different forms of relationships, whether they be romantic, platonic, or familial, can all benefit overall health and well-being.

On the flip side, not having healthy relationships can be detrimental to health. When people lack platonic relationships, they are more likely to be subject to psychological distress and engage in unhealthy behaviors.  

Ways to foster relationships include:

  • Regularly scheduling get-togethers (coffee, a walk, a meal, going to the movies, or just hanging out) with friends or family members
  • Connecting with community or faith-based groups
  • Volunteering for a local organization
  • Joining a local group, such as a hiking club, knitting group, or other interest group

Not everyone has a spiritual or religious need. However, for some people nurturing their spirit allows them to connect on a deeper level with themselves and to think beyond themselves.

Spiritual self-care practices might include:

  • Hiking or spending time in nature
  • Listening to inspirational music
  • Going to church or attending virtual spiritual activities or groups
  • Talking with a spiritual advisor

Why Is Self-Care Important?

Practicing self-care regularly can bring about both short- and long-term benefits that lead to improved well-being and an improved health status.

In the short term, people who practice self-care can see positive changes such as:

  • Reduced stress levels : Putting your health and needs first along with giving yourself a bit of rest can significantly reduce stress levels.
  • Increasing self-worth : The more you take care of yourself, the better you will feel about who you are as a person. This is because more of your core needs will be met on a regular basis.
  • Feelings of belonging : A short-term benefit of spending time with others will provide feelings of belonging and love, which is good for your overall mental health.

While the short-term benefits of self-care are good, the long-term benefits are what self-care is more focused on. Some long-term benefits include:

  • Managing chronic conditions: By practicing physical and mental self-care strategies, conditions such as depression, diabetes, and heart disease can be more effectively managed.
  • Disease prevention: Implementing self-care practices, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and stress management techniques, reduces the risk of heart attack , stroke , and obesity in the future.
  • Stress reduction: Stress affects all systems in the body. Chronic stress can lead to chronic health conditions. Practicing self-care that reduces chronic stress can help lower the risk of developing health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, and more.
  • Healthier relationships: When taking better care of our personal needs, we are better able to engage in healthy relationships partially due to increased self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Improved job satisfaction: A study of nurses found those who implemented intentional self-care practices had significantly higher job satisfaction. The authors suggest implementing self-care practices could improve job satisfaction and teamwork while reducing burnout.
  • Reduced burnout: Authors of a review of multiple studies concluded the solution for burnout is complex, but self-care strategies are one of several components that could be effective.
  • Improved quality of life: When self-care practices help to better manage health conditions, reduce stress, or create a greater sense of belonging, overall well-being and quality of life improve.

How to Practice Self-Care

Building your perfect self-care plan will depend on your personal health and lifestyle. To create a plan to encourage better health and well-being:

  • Determine your overall level of health: Once you know your starting point health-wise, you can begin adding or subtracting certain activities or stressors in your life to focus on improving your health.
  • Identify your stressors: Make a list of things that cause you stress in all aspects of your life. The next step is to do your best to avoid certain stressors. If they are unavoidable, teach yourself coping techniques that can help lessen your stress reaction to certain situations.
  • Identify your coping strategies: Everyone develops strategies to cope with health issues, stress, and other life problems. Make a list of your coping strategies and see which ones are healthy and which ones aren’t. The unhealthy ones that don't serve you well can be swapped out for healthier coping mechanisms.

After completing these three steps, you can begin to formulate a plan that you can commit to.

Self-Care Strategies for People With Chronic Disease

If you have a chronic disease, your self-care plan may look a little different than that of someone who does not. This is only because you will have to incorporate certain activities that will benefit you. For example, if you have diabetes , ensure that coping strategies and activities you utilize as self-care help you manage your condition while you follow your treatment plan.

Self-care is the practice of taking care of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your life to promote health and wellness. It is a lifestyle that enables you to set aside time for your health to ensure your overall well-being now and for years to come.

If you do adopt the right techniques to care for yourself, you will be able to reap the benefits, such as better physical and mental health, the prevention or better management of disease, and better personal and workplace relationships.

Let’s clear up one common misconception from the get-go: Self-care is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish. Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day.

Paula Gill Lopez, PhD , an associate professor in the department of psychological and educational consultation at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, says the need for self-care is obvious. “We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression,” she says. “Everybody feels it.”

Self-care is part of the answer to how we can all better cope with daily stressors, explains Kelsey Patel , a Los Angeles-based wellness expert . It’s work stress. It’s the stress of trying to keep up with the pace of daily life, which technology has hastened more than ever (just think how many emails come flooding into your inbox each day). “People are feeling lonelier and less able to unwind and slow down, which makes them feel more anxious and overwhelmed by even the simplest tasks,” Patel says.

What Is Self-Care, and Why Is It Critical for Your Well-Being?

According to this definition, self-care includes everything related to staying physically healthy — including hygiene, nutrition, and seeking medical care when needed. It’s all the steps an individual can take to manage stressors in his or her life and take care of his or her own health and well-being.

Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well. Its benefits are better physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. Research suggests self-care promotes positive health outcomes, such as fostering resilience, living longer, and becoming better equipped to manage stress.

Common examples of self-care include: maintaining a regular sleeping routine, eating healthy, spending time in nature, doing a hobby you enjoy, and expressing gratitude. Self-care can look different for everyone, but to count as self-care, the behavior should promote health and happiness for you.

To get into a routine of regularly practicing self-care, experts recommend starting small rather than tackling the most challenging thing first. Choose one practice each week to weave into your daily routine. Note any positive changes, and add in more practices when you feel ready.

As self-care has become more mainstream, the definitions have started to become more about general wellbeing and tend to focus on tuning in to one’s needs and meeting those needs. “Self-care is anything that you do for yourself that feels nourishing,” says Marni Amsellem, PhD , a licensed psychologist based in the greater New York metropolitan area.

“That can be something that’s relaxing or calming, or it can be something that is intellectual or spiritual or physical or practical or something you need to get done,” she says.

Self-care requires checking in with yourself and asking yourself how you’re doing physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some people use it to deal with difficult news stories, while others practice self-care just to maintain their happiness day to day . Self-care does not mean the same thing for everyone. Different people will adopt different self-care practices, and even your own definition might change over time. “What is self-care for one person will likely differ from someone else, and what’s self-care for you one day might not feel like self-care another day,” Dr. Amsellem says.

Engaging in self-care regularly could help you put your best foot forward. “When we are regularly taking care of ourselves, we are better able to react to the things that go on in our lives,” Amsellem says. “It’s something we do to maintain positive well-being.”

Types of Self-Care

“It could be anything that floats your boat — anything that puts a smile on your face,” Dr. Gill Lopez says. “Anything that makes you feel cared for, even if it’s you caring for yourself.”

There are a few different categories of self-care:

  • Emotional self-care , such as self-talk , weekly bubble baths, saying “no” to things that cause unnecessary stress, giving yourself permission to take a pause, or setting up a weekly coffee date with a friend
  • Physical self-care , such as prioritizing sleep, adopting an exercise routine you can stick with, or choosing healthy and nourishing foods over highly processed ones
  • Spiritual self-care , such as attending a religious service, spending time in nature, meditating , incorporating regular acts of kindness into your day, or keeping a gratitude journal

Additionally, Gill Lopez puts self-care into two further categories: temporary and enduring.

What Counts as Self-Care, and What Doesn’t

There’s no way to say exactly what counts as self-care because everyone’s definition is their own and unique.

The underlying rule is that it’s something that brings you sustained joy in the long run, Courtney says. And though there are plenty of examples of self-care that seem to tread a fine line between a health-enhancing behavior and self-indulgence, self-care doesn’t have to be about padding your calendar with luxurious experiences or activities that cost money (though it certainly can).

Consider a manicure or a massage or any other pampering activity. It might seem indulgent, but if the activity helps you de-stress and carve out time for yourself, it counts as self-care, Amsellem says. If weekly manicures or monthly spa days are beyond your means, they will likely add stress to your life in the long run, so there are plenty of other self-care practices you can adopt.

“Self-care does not have to cost anything — it’s just doing things you enjoy. And a lot of the things we enjoy or feel fulfilled from cost nothing,” Amsellem says. “Stepping outside and taking a deep breath, for example, might be the greatest act of self-care.”

Even if you can’t spend lots of time and money, Gill Lopez says you can still practice self-care several times a week by turning things you do every day into self-care practices.

Maybe you try being more mindful of your thoughts on your commute, or maybe you find ways to make daily tasks, like showering, more enjoyable. Pick a soap with a scent that you love, and focus on the physical sensations of the shower. Gill Lopez says: What does your shower smell like? What does it sound like? How does the warm water feel on your skin? “For about 10 minutes in the shower, which I have to do anyway, instead of letting my monkey brain run wild, I’m right there,” she says.

Daily chores like making your bed in the morning are also examples of self-care — or can be. “This is where that individuality comes into play, because for some people there is no way making a bed feels like self-care — it may just feel like a chore,” Amsellem says. But if it helps you claim your day and gives you a sense of accomplishment early on, you’ll have that with you even if the rest of the day gets derailed, Amsellem says.

The simple act of making your bed in the morning likely isn’t sufficient to account for all your self-care, she says. You may need to routinely devote time and energy to other self-care practices, she adds. “But if there are some days when you feel out of control, on those days, starting the day off doing what you wanted to do for yourself might be one of the biggest forms of self-care you engage in that day.”

And sometimes when all of our other self-care plans get thrown out of whack (you worked through your yoga class, your friend canceled your coffee date — we’ve all been there), it’s those small practices of self-care that provide just enough calm to help us get through the day and wake up in a better mood tomorrow.

The Effects: How Self-Care Benefits Your Health and Well-Being

Many common self-care practices have been linked to longevity and other positive health outcomes, says  Ellen K. Baker, PhD , a psychologist based in Washington, DC. There’s a lot of research, for example, showing that things like exercise, yoga, and mindfulness are supportive of mental and physical health, she says.

The clinical evidence documenting the long-term health benefits of specifically taking a self-care approach to health (over other approaches) is less robust, but it is building.

How to Start a Self-Care Routine

To get started with a self-care routine:

  • Determine which activities bring you joy, replenish your energy, and restore your balance.
  • Start small by choosing one behavior you’d like to incorporate into your routine in the next week.
  • Build up to practicing that behavior every day for one week.
  • Reflect on how you feel.
  • Add more practices when ready.
  • Get support through sharing practices from loved ones, a coach, a licensed professional (like a therapist or dietitian), or through your healthcare plan, community, or workplace.

Practicing self-care doesn’t need to be a heavy lift right out of the gate. Here are a few ideas to ease you into your self-care journey:

  • Start each day by paying attention to your breath for five minutes and setting intentions for the day.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Reflect on what you’re grateful for each night.
  • Put your phone on airplane mode for a half hour before bed each night to release yourself from the flurry of notifications.
  • Call a friend just to say hello.
  • Take up a relaxing hobby.
  • Pick a bedtime, and stick to it.

Self-care may seem like nothing more than the latest buzzword or passing trend, but in reality, it is a commitment to ourselves—a promise to factor ourselves into the equation of our lives. When we optimize self-care, we feel better, look better, and have more energy. And quality self-care is linked to improved mental health, with benefits like enhanced self-esteem and self-worth, increased optimism , a positive outlook on life, and lower levels of anxiety and depression .

We’re all we have, and we owe it to ourselves to take care of our physical and mental health. While we don’t set out to do ourselves harm, self-care often ends up last on the list of priorities in our busy lives.

The road to self-sacrifice is paved with good intentions. We sacrifice ourselves to meet deadlines, help others, and show others we love and care for them by going above and beyond to help them. We over-extend, over-promise, and exhaust ourselves so often and so much that we don’t even realize how tired and stressed we are.

When we’re tired, angry, and dissatisfied with ourselves. we reach for a quick fix to feel better. We over-indulge in habits and behaviors that offer temporary relief or distraction, but do not make things better. When the day is done, we’re often too tired to sleep... and we wake up the next day and do it all over again. The solution: bringing in quality self-care that sustains us and ensures that we factor ourselves into the equation of our lives.

Self-care and energy

Self-care revolved around caring for—and maximizing—our four sources of energy: the food we eat, our sleep , our breath (our physical activity levels), and our state of mind . Many experts frame tending to these four aspects of life as the four pillars of quality self-care. Integrating quality self-care into our lives is a powerful way to reconnect and reinvigorate ourselves, mind, body, and soul.

Unlike a shiny new vehicle, we don’t come with an owner’s manual. But if we did, we’d all have the basic knowledge to fuel ourselves with fresh, high-quality, nutrition -rich foods. We would know to keep problematic behaviors and habits in check. We would know how to talk to ourselves with kindness and compassion and challenge our negative beliefs and self-defeating thoughts. We would take the time to move our bodies daily, to breathe deep, nourishing breaths. We would know how to prepare for and prioritize quality sleep. And we would understand the importance of pursuing interests and connections that bring us joy and a sense of connection to ourselves on a daily basis.

The absence of self-care

For people suffering from mental health issues like depression, every day is a challenge. I used to run groups for people suffering from depression. In our sessions, I would take everyone through an exercise of listing things that they enjoyed, things of interest and value to them, and things that made them smile. After everyone had completed their list, I would ask them to take a few minutes to reflect on how many of those activities they had engaged in over the previous week, and share their thoughts. Each week, almost everyone reported that they had not done any of the enjoyable activities on their list.

Connecting to ourselves

This group exercise illustrates a valuable lesson in resilience . Resilience isn’t something we do or don’t have. It is something we build and reinforce every day. Through having compassion for ourselves and purposely engaging in things that make us feel good when we have low self-esteem or are struggling, we connect to our power, our ability to lift and support ourselves through whatever comes our way. Self-care involves valuing ourselves enough to make our health, well-being, and happiness a priority. It means having compassion for ourselves by acknowledging when we are struggling, over-extending ourselves, or feeling unwell.

5 steps for enhancing self-care

We need to understand that we can step back, press pause, and direct our energy on taking care of ourselves. We need to realize that we can choose to live our lives in a way that supports and optimizes both our physical and mental health, fitness, and well-being!

  • Make quality a priority in your life. Quality food, rest, and time to connect with friends, family, and ourselves feeds, repairs, and restores the body, mind, and spirit.
  • Pay attention to your thoughts. Challenge negative self-talk , fears, and feelings of inadequacy.
  • Be as nice to yourself as you are to others. We’re often our harshest critics and most relentless worst enemies.
  • Start saying no to requests to help others when you are running on empty or don’t have the time to take care of your own need.
  • Stay connected to yourself. Engage in an activity or experience that brings you joy, no matter how briefly. Sit in the sunshine. Listen to a favorite song. Meet a friend. Walk in nature. Simply do something that brings joy and love and keeps you connected to yourself.

What is Self-Care and Why is it Important For You?

While there is no unit of measurement for self-care, I personally like to compare it to calories, which are literally units of energy. That is, one calorie equals one unit of energy. Here, I see one unit of self-care as a unit of personal fulfillment. The more units of fulfillment one has, the higher their life satisfaction. Subsequently, individuals may find themselves more motivated, energized and purposed in their endeavors.

Though calories do give you energy, those alone are not enough to provide the type of fulfillment you're seeking. You must take time to not only appreciate your life but the positive impact you have on others. Regardless of intention, you cannot possibly keep going without having a strong foundation, which is built upon self-care. And, yes, healthy eating — which includes nutritious caloric consumption — is also part of this.

First, What Does Self-Care Mean?

Although prioritizing self-care may sound like common sense, especially if you’re considering longevity, it’s often the first thing to go when you find yourself in challenging situations, whether because of bad health, a financial crisis, job loss, divorce or another significant life event. This is why it is important to keep it top of mind and not an after-thought, especially in challenging times.

Why is Self-Care Important?

Burning the candle at both ends, so-to-speak, comes with significant consequences, which may include but are not limited to burnout, depression, anxiety, resentment and a whole host of other negative implications.

Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy and more. From a physical health perspective, it has also been clinically proven to reduce heart disease, stroke and cancer. Spiritually, it may help keep us in tune with our higher power as well as realize our meaning in life.

▸ What are the Benefits of Self-Care?

Self-care offers numerous benefits for your overall well-being. Here are some key benefits:

  • Improved physical health: Engaging in activities like regular exercise, getting enough sleep and eating nutritious meals can enhance your physical health, boost your energy levels and strengthen your immune system.
  • Enhanced mental and emotional well-being : There are many reasons why mental health is important , and practicing self-care can help reduce stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression. It promotes better mental health by providing an opportunity to relax, recharge and engage in activities that bring joy and fulfillment.
  • Increased productivity and focus: Taking care of yourself allows you to recharge and rejuvenate, leading to increased productivity, improved concentration and better problem-solving abilities. When you prioritize your well-being, you have more energy and mental clarity to tackle daily tasks.
  • Better relationships: When you prioritize caring for yourself, you have more emotional resources to invest in your relationships. Taking time for yourself helps prevent burnout and enables you to show up as your best self in your interactions with others.
  • Increased self-esteem and self-worth: Personal care practices can boost your self-esteem and self-worth. By prioritizing your needs and engaging in activities that make you feel good, you send a message to yourself that you deserve care and attention.
  • Prevention of burnout: Regular self-care can help prevent burnout, which is a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. By taking proactive steps to care for yourself, you can replenish your energy and prevent the negative consequences of burnout. This can be especially important for those working in the helping professions .

Self-care is vitally important. Without appropriate nutrition, physical activity, sleep and otherwise, you may be able to get by for a while but will ultimately burnout. This is not a matter of if but when.

How to Practice Self-Care

Perhaps the single most common reason people give for not participating in self-care is due to a lack of time. While many of us have a lot going on, it’s imperative that we take time out every day for ourselves, even if minimally. And it doesn't have to cost a thing. You can even accomplish it in the convenience of your own home. 

Even if you only have 5-minute increments spread throughout the day to engage in self-care, that is certainly better than nothing. Over time, you may significantly enhance your overall health and well-being. Even if you are just beginning, there are results that may be realized almost immediately.

▸ What are Examples of Self-Care?

Examples of self-care do differ, even if minimally from person-to-person, but generally satisfy one or multiple of the national Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) eight dimensions of wellness ( SAMHSA pdf source ).

Though developed by substance use professionals, these dimensions conceptualize the domains of wellness that make all of us whole. 

Here are some suggestions to consider among each of the eight domains. Feel free to modify, replace, or consider your own as you go along. Remember, this is about you.

  • Emotional: Talk to someone, reflect, journal, read, do something artistic, listen to music, work out, take a walk, watch something that suits the mood (or does the opposite and changes it), cry it out, hug someone, cuddle, laugh, take a nap.
  • Environmental: Take a walk somewhere nice, breathe in fresh air, enjoy the sun, enjoy the night sky, avoid littering, pick up litter, reduce waste, use reusable products, recycle, clean your house, redesign a room.
  • Financial: Develop a practical financial plan, open a savings account, start saving (even if $1 per day), try saving even more if you are already saving, invest, cut back on unnecessary purchases, consider where you can cut corners, avoid credit cards, ask for a raise.
  • Intellectual: Read, listen to audiobooks, watch documentaries, complete puzzles, be mindful of the world around you, become curious, try something new, tap into your creative/artistic side, take a class, complete a program, graduate.
  • Occupational: Learn a trade, get your degree, train for a promotion, accept the promotion, put together your resume, polish your resume, apply for your dream job, take on a task you enjoy, open your own business.
  • Physical: Work out daily, take a walk, eat healthy, get your annual checkup, see the dentist, take medications as prescribed, avoid drugs and alcohol, get 7-9 hours of sleep , see the physician when you do not feel well.
  • Social: Meet up with friends and family, keep in contact with old friends, volunteer, go out, have fun, engage in healthy social media use, stay positive , utilize technology when distance is a factor, have a big laugh.
  • Spiritual: Meditate, pray, reflect, engage in yoga, visit a meaningful site, do right by others, practice mindfulness , consider your higher purpose and meaning, look to your higher power for support, love one another, help those in need.

Self-care is an important activity to do every day. Doing so will lead toward a better balance among your dimensions of wellness and lead toward improved overall health and wellness. Life is precious, and it is meant to be enjoyed.

We can all help our loved ones and community members get through crisis. But as we take action to support others, it is also vital that we take the time to support and care for ourselves. This page shares tips and resources to help you practice self-care.

While you are supporting and helping someone who may be in crisis, it is especially important for you to also take care of yourself. Practicing self-care does not mean you are choosing yourself over your loved one. It means that you are simply being mindful of your own needs, so you are better able to support the people you care about. When you take care of yourself and are not stressed, you are better able to meet the needs of others.

Self-care comes in a variety of forms. It does not require an elaborate plan; self-care can be as simple as taking a deep breath when you notice you are becoming stressed. By maintaining your physical and mental health, you will likely be better equipped to handle the stressors that come along with supporting someone you care about. ( Source )

Self-Care Strategies for Managing Stress

Self-care, as the word itself suggests, is what we do to take care of ourselves. When we get stressed out, we tend to ignore the very things that might make us feel better, so it is important to find time to take care of yourself.

Remain socially connected. When you are supporting someone else, it can be easy to lose sight of your other social connections. It is important stay in touch with your family and friends who can offer support. Set aside some time each week to spend time with others in your support network. ( Source )

Maintain a healthy lifestyle. By improving your physical health, you will be better able to maintain your mental health, and therefore may be more effective in supporting someone you care about.

  • Exercising regularly is an important part of staying both physically and mentally healthy. Exercise doesn’t have to consist of a complicated workout routine at the gym. It can be as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking or biking instead of driving. Daily exercise produces stress-relieving hormones and improves your general health.
  • Eating healthy foods is what will give your body fuel to exercise. By eating mostly unprocessed foods, you can lower your risk for chronic illness and stabilize your energy and mood.
  • Getting enough sleep is also important in maintaining your physical and mental health. People generally require 7 – 9 hours of sleep to stay healthy. Turning off your phone and TV about 30 minutes before you go to bed can help you sleep better.
  • Avoiding use or misuse of drugs and alcohol is an important aspect of stress management because rather than reducing stress, drugs and alcohol can worsen it. Click here if you are seeking help for substance abuse.

Make time for yourself. When caring for someone who may be suicidal, it can be hard to find time to take care of yourself. However, to be a productive caregiver, it is important to have some “me time.” Write out a list of activities that bring you joy to refer to when you need some time for yourself. These activities do not have to be elaborate or take a lot of planning. It can be something as simple as taking a walk in a park, listening to music, or writing in your journal. Anything that makes you feel better is worth a little bit of time out of your day.

Know when you need to ask for help . When caring for someone with suicidal thoughts, you may become overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed does not make you a bad caregiver, family member, or friend, it makes you human. There are various resources for caregivers such as NAMI Family Support Groups . These groups offer support for people with loved ones who have experienced symptoms of a mental illness. The concept of self-care is one we’re hearing about more and more lately. The world today often feels out of our control and many people are struggling with feeling disconnected, stressed and anxious about the future. Everyone seems to be asking, why is self-care important? And what are some self-care tips that I can use to take care of my mind , body and soul?

  • Being active (going for a walk, a bike ride, taking a fitness class, etc.)
  • Taking a relaxing bubble bath
  • Dancing to your favorite song
  • Getting a massage
  • Taking a nap

Of course, most folks looking for some respite from the everyday grind might not have time to draw a bubble bath or go for an hour-long massage. But physical self-care can actually be much simpler than that: brushing your teeth, doing your hair, even taking five minutes to stretch in the morning are all ways of physically caring for yourself.  

Give some thought to what types of physical activities make you feel calm, balanced and happy, and schedule regular time to do them.

Mental Self-Care

Mental self-care encompasses anything you do specifically to stimulate your mind and cultivate a healthy psyche.

It’s not about reaching a mental state of nirvana, it’s about understanding and developing a loving relationship with your mind.

Do you have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning? Or maybe by the end of a long day your head feels like mush? You’ll definitely want to incorporate some of the below mental self-care practices into your everyday life. 

Examples of Mental Self-Care Activities

  • Listening to a podcast
  • Trying a new hobby
  • Going to a museum
  • Reading a book
  • Writing (poetry, journaling, stream-of-consciousness, etc.)

Beyond stimulating activities, mental self-care also encompasses learning how to manage your thoughts, the setting of clear boundaries with friends, family or work, or even recognizing the need to reach out for professional help. Ultimately, mental self-care is about stimulating, nurturing and listening to your big, beautiful brain.

Social Self-Care

Humans are social beings, which means we need regular connection with others to thrive (yes, even introverts!). That’s why prioritizing social self-care —or activities that nurture our relationships with others —is critical.

The problem is, oftentimes when our lives get hectic and overwhelming (and we’d most benefit from facetime with others), we tend to cancel our plans and withdraw. While of course we all need to just say “no” sometimes, it’s also extremely important to make time for social interaction. This has become especially pronounced over the last couple years, as more schools and offices are going remote.

If you’re living alone, or thrive off the energy of in-person communication, you may be requiring some extra social self-care as of late. Remember that socializing with others, even when you’re busy with life, is not a privilege–it’s a necessity!

Examples of Social Self-Care Activities

  • Scheduling a regular phone touch-base with your mom
  • Hosting a game night with your friends
  • Going on a date with your significant other
  • Cuddling with a furry friend
  • Writing a card and mailing it to a loved one, shut-in or veteran

While social self-care often means spending time with other people, it can also mean the opposite. Give some thought to which relationships are no longer serving you in your life. If there’s anyone you find draining to be around (a friend or family member), it may be time to part ways. Your relationships should uplift and fulfill you, not deflate and drain you.

Spiritual Self-Care

Don’t let the name of this one fool you. This form of self-care applies to everyone—religious, atheist, agnostic, or otherwise. Spiritual self-care encompasses any activities you engage in to connect with and nurture your soul. This practice is fundamentally about connecting with your inner spirit. For some this may include activities that honor a belief in a higher power (God, the universe or whatever guides you).

Spiritual self-care is a helpful tool for everybody, especially if you’re looking to feel more grounded in your day-to-day life. It can provide comfort to those dealing with grief and loss, medical or financial uncertainty, or any of life’s other stressful curveballs.

Examples of Spiritual Self-Care Activities

  • Spending time in nature
  • Engaging in prayer or attending a worship service
  • Volunteering for a cause you care about
  • Creating a vision board or doing something else that lights you up and inspires you

While everybody’s spiritual self-care is unique to them, there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success. If you’re incorporating a daily spiritual practice into your routine, designate a peaceful and quiet area of your home in which to do so. Try to avoid social media first thing in the morning, and use soul-affirming mantras to help ease into a successful day.

Practical Self-Care

Any actions you take to fulfill your core needs and reduce stress can be catalogued as practical self-care.

Yes, even mundane, everyday activities. Think of how much better you feel when you clean your room or stick to a workout routine; these forms of self-care are admittedly less exciting than others, but not to be underestimated. They are huge sanity-savers and help create a greater sense of calm and control in our busy lives.

Practical self-care can be especially helpful for college students or young professionals, caregivers, stay-at-home parents, or anybody that struggles to stay organized. 

Examples of Practical Self-Care Activities

  • Organizing your email inbox
  • Tidying your living space
  • Meeting with a financial advisor
  • Setting out your clothes for the week in advance
  • Meal prepping

You can also use practical self-care as a way to create sustainable, healthy habits. This includes things like limiting cell phone usage, committing to a better sleep schedule, or the regular decluttering of your living space.

Professional Self-Care

If you’re employed, it’s essential to make time for professional self-care. These are the activities and actions that support feeling balanced and fulfilled in your career.

Even if you love your job and don’t find it particularly stressful, incorporating professional self-care into your life can help prevent burnout and keep you inspired. 

If you’re new to the workforce, have a job with demanding hours, or perhaps are a manager looking to better support your staff, try implementing the below tips. 

Examples of Professional Self-Care Activities

  • Setting a calendar reminder to take a lunch break
  • Spending time with coworkers after hours
  • Setting your phone to Do Not Disturb at the end of your work day
  • Taking courses, attending conferences, or working with a mentor to develop your skills and support your desired career path
  • Taking a mental health (or sick) day when you need it

Boundary-setting at work can be daunting but is so crucial for your mental and physical well-being. Once you achieve a healthier work/life balance, you may find that there’s more time to focus on the other six areas of self-care discussed in this article. 

Establishing a Self-Care Routine That Works For You

Mom Shares Why Daughter Goes To School In Stained Clothing

Marla Branyan is a mom from Indiana who knows the relentless cycle of parenting. It's early mornings, hectic breakfasts, and laundry that's piled up like a mountain.

With a 3-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son, she's no stranger to stained clothes. But after years of feeling pressured to keep her kids looking spotless, she decided it was time to break the cycle.

"Why should I stress about a little mess?" she asked. And with that, her TikTok video about sending her kids to school in stained clothing went viral, sparking a heated debate among parents.

Some Parents Were Outraged – Others Said They Will Do The Same

Branyan's TikTok video struck a nerve. In it, she talked about sending her kids to school in stained clothes. She explained that these stains often come from school activities, like painting, playing outside, or simply enjoying a messy lunch. "Why waste money on new clothes every week when they're just going to get stained again?" she asked.

The video quickly attracted both praise and criticism. Some parents were outraged, arguing that sending kids to school in stained clothes sends the wrong message: "Would you go to work in clean or stained clothes?" one parent commented. Others, however, applauded her, sharing stories of their own struggles with keeping kids clean and tidy.

What Are We Really Communicating To Our Children When We Strive For Perfection?

Christine Jenneiahn may be 85 years old but that doesn't mean she's an easy target. When a masked, armed man broke into her Idaho home threatening her and handcuffing her to a chair, she fought back, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds and ultimately killing the attacker.

AND she lived to tell the tale.

It was 2 a.m. on March 13 when Christine woke up, shocked to find herself staring down the barrel of a loaded 9-mm pistol.

According to the Bingham County Sheriff's Office, the assailant, wearing a black ski mask and a camouflage jacket, broke in through a window.

After pistol-whipping her across the head, the man, later identified as 39-year-old Derek Condon, dragged her out of bed and down the hall to the living room where he handcuffed her to a wooden chair. With a gun to her head, Condon then demanded to know if there was anyone else in the house and where she kept the valuables.

Wanting to protect her adult son with disabilities who was sleeping downstairs, Christine lied and told him that she was alone.

Condon left her handcuffed in the living room while he went off in search of loot. Christine seized the opportunity. She lugged the chair to her bedroom, grabbed her .357 Magnum revolver from under her pillow, and then returned to the living room, hiding the gun in the couch cushions beside her.

Then, she waited.

At some point Condon returned, threatening to kill her. Terrified, Christine knew it was "now or never." She drew her gun and fired, striking him twice.

"Condon returned fire and emptied a 9 mm pistol into Christine striking her multiple times in her abdomen, leg, arm, and chest," states a report posted to the County Sheriff's Facebook page .

Condon crawled to the kitchen where he died of his wounds. Christine, still handcuffed to the chair and riddled with bullet holes, "fell to the floor." She remained there for 10 HOURS before her son finally came upstairs and gave her a phone so she could call 9-1-1.

Police arrived just after noon to find her son, David, standing in the doorway. Officers "provided life-saving measures on her" and rushed her to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. She has since been released.

An Incredible Act of Bravery

During their investigation, deputies discovered that Condon was suffering from mental health issues and PTSD from the time he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

In an interview with police, Christine revealed that she didn't want to shoot Condon but she felt like she didn't have a choice. She feared for both her life and her son's life.

"I'm a very nice old lady but you can only push somebody so far." Christine Jenneiahn via KSL News

As for the prosecuting attorney's office, they won't be pressing any charges.

"This case presents an easy analysis of self-defense and justifiable homicide. It also presents one of the most heroic acts of self-preservation I have heard of," Prosecuting Attorney Ryan W. Jolley wrote.

Summarizing the harrowing events he said, "He [Condon] had told Christine he would kill her multiple times. He had broken into her home in the middle of the night, handcuffed her to a chair, and struck her with his firearm. Her disabled son was downstairs in his room."

"That Christine survived this encounter is truly incredible. Her grit, determination, and will to live appear to be what saved her that night." Prosecuting Attorney Ryan W. Jolley

Not to mention, never mess with Mama.

In the face of extreme danger, Christine didn't let her age or fear prevent her from saving her life and that of her son. She did what any mother would do...fiercely protect her child at all costs. Christine's heroic actions don't just speak to the power of self-preservation, they are a true testament to a mother’s love. And there is nothing in this world more powerful.

If the ongoing pandemic, talk of new lockdowns and second waves, or news of protests, elections, fires, and more has you feeling overwhelmed, then it may be time to prioritize self-care.

I’m certain you’ve had conversations with friends and family members on how to cope with anxiety and stress. In today’s Confident English lesson, I want to help you successfully talk about self-care in English with the same phrasal verbs, idioms, and collocations you might hear other English speakers use.

Now more than ever self-care is a hot topic of conversation and a matter of urgency.

To best care for ourselves and the people around us, we need to take care of our emotional, mental, and physical health. And that is what self-care is all about.

How to Know When It’s Time to Prioritize Self-Care

  • You’ve spread yourself thin. (Idiom)
  • This idiom means to try to do too many things at the same time so that you cannot give enough time or attention to any of them.
  • Example 1: After years of spreading herself too thin at work, she finally decided to resign from the company rather than continue to put her health at risk.
  • Example 2: Next week I’m taking a couple of days off work because I’ve been spreading myself too thin over the past month.
  • You’ve worn yourself down. (Phrasal Verb)
  • To wear down is a phrasal verb that means to erode, to weaken, to fatigue.
  • Example 1: After several weeks of working overtime, I felt worn down.
  • Example 2: Many of us are feeling worn down by the COVID 19 pandemic and are struggling to prepare for another lockdown.
  • You have a laundry list of obligations.
  • To have a laundry list of something means to have a long list of to-do items
  • Example 1: One benefit of self-care is the ability to better handle a laundry list of obligations.

I started exercising twice a day, since the pools are closed now. I unplugged myself from TV. Instead I’m concentrating on my studying to be on the top of my game. I’d like to manage my time and prioritize my tasks. Also I’ve some ‘me’ time for myself to FT my children and my grandchildren. Thanks again for your time and patience. God bless.

Great question, Katherine. There are very similar and could even be used as synonyms. However, in my opinion, I consider ‘to be worn down’ to be a stronger feeling of fatigue.

To feel worn out might be to feel tired after difficult work out or a long day at work.

However, when I hear that someone feels worn down, it seems more significant. A fatigue that comes from weeks and weeks of difficulty, fatigue, etc.

Why self care is important?

Self care is the taking time out from work and doing things that make you feel good. Even when you have a job that you enjoy, you need to take breaks and not immerse yourself into work.

Self Care Ideas

If you are stumped about what to do for self care, check out my ideas in the video below. Self care can be small things like buying your favorite coffee drink on the way to work. But self care can be larger actions. Quitting a toxic job or moving to a new state may be self care as well.

What do you do to take care of yourself? In the video I share some of the things I do to help myself manage life. From the more special (taking breaks) to the daily (eliminating my phone’s notifications), here are 10 tips that will help you take care of yourself.

You know, SLPs are dedicated to helping others, but the demands of the job can be high, and burnout is a real risk. Self-care is any activity that helps you to maintain your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

More Self Care Tips for SLPs

  • Set boundaries.  It is important to set boundaries between your work life and your personal life. This may mean not checking work emails or taking work calls outside of work hours. It may also mean saying no to additional work or commitments if you are feeling overwhelmed.
  • Take breaks.  Make sure to take breaks throughout the day to get up and move around, stretch, or just relax for a few minutes. Taking breaks can help to reduce stress and improve your focus.
  • Get enough sleep.  When you are well-rested, you are better able to cope with stress and make healthy decisions. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
  • Eat healthy foods.  Eating nutritious foods gives you the energy you need to get through the day. It can also help to improve your mood and reduce stress.
  • Exercise regularly.  Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your energy levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
  • Spend time with loved ones.  Spending time with loved ones can help to reduce stress and provide social support. Make time for activities that you enjoy doing with friends, family, or pets.
  • Practice mindfulness.  Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness can help to reduce stress, improve focus, and increase self-awareness. There are many different ways to practice mindfulness, such as meditation, yoga, or simply taking a few deep breaths.
  • Seek professional help if needed.  If you are struggling to cope with stress or burnout, it is important to seek professional help. A therapist can provide you with support and guidance as you develop coping mechanisms.

Self-care is essential for maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Keep in mind that by taking care of yourself, you will be better able to provide care for others. These tips actually apply to anyone in a helping profession like nursing, OT, PT, therapists, psychologists, social workers and teachers.

Even More Self Care Tips

  • Delegate tasks.  If possible, delegate tasks to other members of your team. This can free up your time so that you can focus on the most important aspects of your job.
  • Take advantage of professional development opportunities.  Staying up-to-date on the latest research and best practices can help you to feel more confident in your abilities.
  • Find a mentor or support group.  Having someone to talk to about the challenges of the job can be helpful. A mentor or support group can provide you with advice and support.
  • Take vacations.  Taking time away from work can help you to relax and recharge. Make sure to schedule vacations throughout the year.
  • Do things you enjoy.  Make time for activities that you find enjoyable and relaxing. This could include hobbies, spending time in nature, or listening to music.

By taking care of yourself, you will be better able to provide care for others.

But mental health is an important thing to discuss because it affects many people and can lead to other problems if left untreated. It’s important to talk about what mental health is, what causes mental health problems, and how you can help someone who has mental health issues.

The first thing that you should know about mental health is that there are many different types of disorders that fall under this category. The most common are depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). You may have heard of some of these before or seen them in the media but there are many more types than just those listed here.

The second thing to know about mental illnesses is what causes them. There are different factors that can cause someone’s brain chemistry to change which could leave a deep impression on one’s life.

Anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background, can have mild to severe mental health issues. A good mental state is crucial for many reasons. It aids us in overcoming difficulties and tensions that we face on a daily basis.

The topic of mental health has to be discussed.. It is an issue that affects people from all walks of life, and it is an issue that needs to be addressed. The stigma surrounding mental health has been present for a long time, and it is still present today. People are afraid to talk about mental illness because they are afraid of what other people will think of them or how they will react.
