Inventors and Inventions Research
by Mr. Wright | Mar 31, 2013 | English Language Arts , Featured Articles , Learning Sfuff , Science , Social Studies
In social studies class, we will begin a research unit. Students will be placed in pairs and together they will choose which inventor or invention they would like to know about. Students will gather information about those inventors using online and offline resources. When students have gathered their research they will need to organize that information in a way that makes sense. For the purposes of this project we will use the following outline when organizing information:
- What is the invention?
- What does the invention do? How can it be used?
- When was it invented?
- Where there other inventions that led up to this invention?
- Information about the inventor
- Who was this inventor?
- When did this inventor live?
- Where did the inventor live?
- What was the inventors early life and education like?
- Any interesting facts about the inventor.
- Why did the inventor want to invent this invention?
- Did the inventor invent other inventions? What where they?
- What is the importance of this invention?
- Explain why the invention is important?
- Have the invetion been improved or changed since it was invented?
- Did it lead to other inventions?
- How has this invention changed the world? What was the world like before this invention and how is it different now that it has been invented?
After details are written out in an organized fashion, students will get to choose a method to present that information. Students can:
- Write a report
- Make a brochure in Publisher
- Make a PowerPoint
- Record a Podcast (like a radio program)
- Make a Glogster Poster
- Make a Blog Post
- Record a video
- Got another idea on how to present the info, talk to Mr. Wright.

3rd Grade Invention Convention
Brook Hill 3rd Grade students have been hard at work making life better for others by creating a new invention!
Brook Hill’s annual Invention Convention was developed to teach research writing skills and foster creativity and problem solving. As part of the project, students research a famous inventor, write a research report about that inventor’s life and then create an original invention that solves a problem and makes life better and easier for people. As a culmination of the project, students create a display board about their invention and present them to judges along with family and friends.
Every year we award the top three original inventions. These inventions display creativity, make life better and easier for others, works, and is done by the student with minimal parent involvement.
We had some incredible inventions this year, and here are the winners:
1st Place: Jacob Grimes “The Easy Feeler” – a wallet designed to help the blind and vision impaired select the correct credit card or ID card.
2nd Place: Beck Langemeier “The Back Saver Door Stopper” – a door stopper with a tall extension to keep the elderly from having to bend over to remove or place a door stopper.
3rd Place: Jett Moore “The One & Only Lolli-Grill” – a mask with a lolli-pop to help ease nausea in cancer patients when they receive treatments

Third Grade Invention Ideas
Learning Center Recycling Ideas for Kindergarten
One of the best things about being in third grade is that you get to create an invention. In many schools throughout the United States, third-graders will be required to present in a science fair or an invention convention, in which they'll have to come up with an idea. While the thought of making an invention is rather exciting, it can be difficult to come up with reliable invention ideas for a school project, without already having some suggestions at your disposal. Luckily, there are many resources out there that offer plenty of third-grade invention ideas which can be done for school or even at home.
Finding Third-Grade Invention Ideas
Hands-on activities, like creating inventions, are a great learning experience for children of all ages. As fun as this can be, even parents may be stumped when it comes time to think of invention ideas for school projects like these. By heading to the library or checking out websites like YouTube or Pinterest, teachers and parents will have an easier time finding simple invention ideas for students and children. You can also pose a question to children by asking them, "What's a problem that needs to be fixed?" in order to spark their creativity.
A Mailbox Alert System
These days, kids are always waiting for something exciting to come in the mail, whether it be a letter from grandma or a small package from Amazon. Most children who are expecting something to arrive will stare out the window all day waiting for it. Adults, on the other hand, may not always feel like walking out to the mailbox (especially in the snow) if there's nothing worthwhile inside. This invention convention idea involves students creating a sensor that they could put inside a mailbox, which would alert you with a small alarm when the mail has arrived. Bonus points if you can connect it to an app!
Easy Recycling Tubes
Even third graders can understand the importance of recycling. However, recycling can be an inconvenience for some people who are used to certain habits. This is a simple invention idea that requires students to take PVC pipes (or any other type of tubes) and connect them to pails or boxes to form slides. One can be for compost, one for paper, one for plastic and one for trash. You can have your classmates decorate them and label them.
A Wallet for the Visually Impaired or Blind
A simple task like taking money out of your wallet and putting it back in can be very difficult for the blind and visually impaired. A great option for your child's third-grade invention idea is to design a wallet specifically for this demographic. The wallet can be made from eco-friendly materials. There should be several pockets for different bills, each labeled with braille. For example, there would be one section for $1 bills, one for $5 bills, one for $20 and so on, each labeled as such. The same would go for coin pockets built into the wallet. This is a simple convention idea that really can make a difference.
A Mood Headband
Mood rings and mood necklaces are really fun to have. But instead of buying a piece of mood jewelry at the store, students can make a mood headband (or bracelet) as a unique invention convention idea. To do this, you can buy liquefied thermotropic crystals which are the ingredient found in mood jewelry. Buy a bare hollow headband at the craft store, and insert the crystals inside. Be sure to ask an adult for help and make sure the crystals are non-toxic.
A Toothpaste "Pump"
There's nothing more frustrating than when you get to the bottom of the toothpaste tube. Therefore, a simple invention idea for students in third-grade is to build a toothpaste pump. This should be some type of clip with panels on both sides, that can squeeze tightly around the toothpaste tube. Using this, you can push the remaining toothpaste out from the tube while ensuring not even a bit of it goes to waste.

Famous Person Research Project
This is a 3rd grade research project. The final product will be a 5-pargraph essay and a digital presentation.
In this research project, 3rd grade students will be choosing a famous person they would like to research, write an essay about, and create a presentation on.
This will be a 5- 6 week project.
Background for Teachers
To teach this lesson, the teacher will need to create a research model. As 3rd graders are still young and probably not attune to how research is done, the teacher will need to plan how to model researching, so it's done appropriately.
The teacher will need to choose a note taking technique to teach and model.
The teacher will need to have an outline model so the students can take their research notes and put it in an outline format.
The teacher will need to be able to teach the technology that will be part of the final presentation project.
Student Prior Knowledge
Prior to the lesson, students will need to have an awareness of the positive impact their famous person has had so they can choose an appropriate person.
The students will need to be able to have reading stamina to spend a large amount of time reading about their famous person.
The students will need a basic understanding of their iPads, as this will be the device the project will be created on.
The students will need to be familiar with the 5-paragraph essay format.
Student Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
Learning Intentions
Students will be able to read, research, and take notes on 3 areas of a famous person
- Why the person is famous
- Interesting Facts
The students will understand the writing process for a research essay
- Read and research
- Put the notes into an outline
- From the outline, write a rough draft
- Edit and revise
- Publish--final copy
Success Criteria
The students will write about their famous person in a 5-paragraph essay
The students will use their knowledge and create a project using technology (iMovie, Podcast using Garage Band, etc.)
Instructional Procedures
1. Teachers will tap into prior knowedge of the students by asking questions such as: What is fame? Who is a famous person? What makes a person famous? Is all fame good? Students will answer these questions on their iPads using the WhiteBoard app.
2. The teacher will present the objectives of this project and the timeline
- choose a famous person
- read and research
- create an outline
- rough draft
- edit/revise
- create a project using technology
3. Time LIne
- 2 weeks to read and research
- 1 week to take notes

Pot Markers
Phone holder, toothbrush with toothpaste dispenser , magnetic locker wallpaper, smart indoor garden, handwashing station, helping hand, toilet heater, a list of 9 easy kid inventions for 3rd graders.
Inventing is the best thing to do with your kids. It will let them know the importance of creativity.
You can encourage them by sharing some of your inventions and asking them to make one too.
Little kids love to create things and it will help them in their future life. They can learn how to solve problems, be creative and think out of the box.
Here’s a list of 9 easy kid invention ideas for 3rd graders. These are great projects to do with your kids, and they should be able to complete them with minimal adult supervision.
The Pot Marker is a simple tool to help you keep track of which pot belongs to which type of vegetable.
It’s made of a small piece of wood and a nail, and it works by simply being hammered into the side of the pot.
This is a great way to mark your vegetable pots. Simply use wooden ice cream sticks as markers.
They’re cheap and easy to find, so you can grab a few extras if you have more than one child or if you want to keep your markers separate for each of them.
This phone holder is an easy project for any 3rd grader. All you need is a few wooden sticks, a piece of fabric, and glue.
Use your wooden sticks to create the shape of a phone holder. Make sure you leave room for your phone to fit inside the holder.
Next, cover the holder with fabric so that it’s comfortable for kids to hold.
This step is optional—you can skip it if you don’t have any fabric lying around (or if you want your kid to get used to holding cold metal).
Once you’ve covered your holder with fabric (or not), glue it onto your phone stand and let it dry completely before putting anything inside of it!
This is a simple and easy invention that a 3rd grader can make. It is also very useful. It has two parts: the toothbrush and the toothpaste dispenser .
The toothbrush has bristles on one end and it is attached to a handle at the top of the toothbrush.
The other end of the toothbrush has an opening where you put in your toothpaste. The second part of this invention is the dispenser.
It has two parts: a container that holds the toothpaste and a lid that opens up so you can squeeze out the amount of toothpaste you need onto your brush.
The container fits inside of the lid so there is no mess when using this product!
If you were a 3rd grader, you probably spent a lot of time in your locker. You probably put all kinds of stuff in there: crumpled-up papers, gum wrappers, maybe even some of your mom’s makeup (sorry!)
But what if you could use your locker as an organizing station? With our magnetic locker wallpaper, you can!
You just stick the magnetic tape to your locker and then stick everything on it! It’s like having a bulletin board on the inside of your locker door for organizing notes, homework assignments, and more.
The first thing to do is to get a small plant pot and put soil in it. Then, you need to find a place in your house that has good light.
I would recommend putting it close to a window or near a lamp so that the plant can get enough light.
Then, you need to find a place where there will be enough water for your plant. You can use an old cup or anything else to hold water and put it in the pot.
After this, you can add your seeds or plants into the soil and mix them together with your hands or a spoon until they are blended together evenly without any large chunks left behind on top of each other.
Finally, place your Smart indoor Garden somewhere safe where nothing will fall on top of it or knock it over accidentally.
The Handwashing Station is a portable, refillable hand washing station with a soap holder.
It’s great for camping trips, visiting grandparents, and any other time you need to make sure everyone has access to clean hands.
This invention is simple, but it can make a big difference in the lives of children who have to wash their hands frequently due to health conditions or allergies.
The Handwashing Station allows them to easily do so without having to carry around a bulky container or cart.
It also makes it easy for caregivers to refill the soap dispenser, so they don’t have to worry about running out of soap or forgetting to buy more.
Kids at the age of 8 are very curious and they want to know everything. They like to invent something new. They also want to help their parents with some chores.
One of the best things for kids is to invent something that will help them in doing their daily activities.
The Helping Hand is a great invention for kids who love to invent something new.
This invention helps kids in many ways like helping them in carrying heavy books or even helping them in making some easy tasks like brushing teeth or washing hands.
The toilet heater is an electronic product placed next to the toilet that heats the toilet seat to keep us from being cold.
This product is easy to make because it uses wires, a battery, and a fan . The wires are connected to the battery and then put into a box with a switch on it.
Then connect the wire from the switch to the fan and another wire from the fan to some sort of electrical source like a lamp or light bulb.
Next, take a piece of cardboard and cut holes in it for your hands so you can hold onto it while sitting down on your toilet seat without getting burned by touching anything hot like metal parts on its surface which might cause burns if touched while sitting down on them while using this invention!
Earmuffs are a great way to keep your ears warm in the winter. They’re easy to make, too.
Follow these steps:
- Cut out two pieces of cardboard that are about one inch wide and four inches long.
- Tape them together so that they form a tube shape around your head with an opening in the front for your face.
- Wrap tape around the edge of the opening so it stays shut and doesn’t let any cold air in!
Although there are many creations and inventions that our third graders made, it is important to realize that even though these inventions creations may not be as challenging or complicated as other projects, they are still just as valuable and important.
The conclusion is that these will engage the creative side of your child, while also instilling a deep sense of pride in your child when they learn to do something on their own.
I hope this article was helpful to you and gave you hints about new ideas and inventions for 3rd graders.
Feel free to leave a comment and share your own ideas, I’m looking forward to it.
