This is a model IELTS stress essay. It is about stress in modern society and how to prevent it.

It is a causes and solutions type essay. In other words, you have to identify what causes stressand then suggest solutions.

Stress is now a major problem in many countries around the world.

What are some of the factors in modern society that cause this stress and how can we reduce it?

This type of essay lends itself to two body paragraphs - one explaining the causes and the next discussing some possible solutions.

As is important with any IELTS essay, you must always read the question carefully.

The topic is often narrowed down to a particular group of people or topic.

Narrowing Down the Topic

Stress in Modern Life Essay

The key here is that ' modern society ' is mentioned.

If you just talk about stress in general but don't connect it to modern society you may be in danger of not fully answering the question .

You need to brainstorm some issues specific to the world we live in today that may result in stress.

What things effect us today that did not (or not too such an extent) 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Using Personal Pronouns

Also, you may notice that ' we ' is used a lot in the stress essay.

Remember an IELTS essay is not quite the same as an academic essay you will normally write. It is can be more personal as you only have your own experience to support your answer with.

You should avoid too many personal pronouns if possible such as ' I ' throughout the essay but you may wish to use this to give your opinion or examples from your own experience at times. This is ok, but don't overdo it.

This question specifically says how can ' we ' reduce it. So it is already making it personal. So it is ok to write about what all of us, or ' we ', can do.

Stress Essay Model Answer

Stress is a problem that can have detrimental effects on many people’s lives, and there are various factors in modern society responsible for this. However, there are ways to limit the potential impacts.

The modern world we live in today presents us with many issues that we did not have to cope with in the past. Firstly, there are issues of terrorism that we are constantly confronted with in the media. Whether these are real or not, we are led to believe our lives are in constant danger, be it flying on a plane or travelling on public transport. Climate change is another worry that everyone has to face. The results of a significant rise in temperatures could radically affect our ways of life, and our children’s too. There are also more health issues to be concerned about than in the past, with rises in alzheimer’s, diabetes, and stroke to name but a few. All of these concerns can result in stress.

Tackling such problems will not be easy, but there are measures that can be taken. Governments and the media could play their part by ensuring that instead of persistently bombarding us with such negative images and information about the world in which we live, we are given more positive stories too. However, given this is unlikely to happen, we need to develop our own strategies to distract us from these influences. Of course exercising regularly is one thing we should do as this has been shown to increase endorphin levels and lead to feelings of happiness. Sleeping enough helps us to recuperate and restore our body. Finally, eating properly can improve our health and result in less worry about potential diseases.

All in all, although there are many factors around us today which lead to stress, we can take steps to reduce it. Given that the strains we face in modern society will likely get worse, ignoring it is not an option for many people.

This is where the concept of stressors comes into the picture.

The perceived threats or daunting external situations that impose pressure on the human mind are called stressors. Further, these stressors are subjective because different people feel frightened or pressured by different external factors. For some stressors maybe exams, for some, it may be joblessness while for some it may be loneliness or turbulence in personal relationships.

Next, it is imperative to draw attention to some concerning statistics pertaining to stress so as to understand the gravity of this psychological issue. Here are some alarming statistics on the impact of stress and related problems globally.

Some frightening facts and figures related to stress

1. According to the World Health Organization, more than 264 million people suffer from chronic stress and depression all over the world. Furthermore, this chronic stress is a leading cause of suicidal tendencies in people of all ages, especially youngsters. ("Depression", 2021)

2. As stated by the Pew Research Center, stress and anxiety are showing a sharp rise in American teenagers. More than 70 percent of teenagers in the US feel that stress, anxiety, and depression are common and major problems in their peer groups. In addition, 61 percent of teens in the US admit that they feel a lot of stress and pressure to score good academic grades. ("Most U.S. Teens See Anxiety, Depression as Major Problems", 2021)

3. One in every four students in the US feels distressed about securing a future and finding decent employment opportunities after completing their graduation. Moreover, around 75 percent of youngsters in the US have been victims of fear, anxiety, anger, and stress while they were at school. They have admitted that they have been under perennial stress while dealing with their schoolwork. 4. As many as 45 percent of college students in the US state that they have experienced stress beyond the average stress level that is predominant in youngsters. To add, around 13 percent of college students report having experienced tremendous stress. Besides, talking about university students in the United Kingdom, 45 percent of students feel stressed due to their academic courses.

5. As reported by students in the US, roughly 37 percent of them opine that examinations and assessment are the leading causes of stress. Next, around 13 percent of students feel that homework is the biggest source of their stress and anxiety.

6. As per the World Health Organization, more than 800, 000 die due to suicide every year. In fact, suicide is the third most prevalent cause of death in teenagers in the age range of 15-19. Furthermore, in its findings, the WHO establishes a clear correlation between suicide rates and mental disorders like prolonged stress, depression, and anxiety. TYPES OF STRESS

Stress can be divided into a number of types based on the level of stress being experienced by a person.

Acute stress:

Acute stress is usually triggered when a person experiences a traumatic event such as a near-death experience, witnessing violence, and losing something precious. The shock associated with such events is so intense that related mental images and thoughts keep popping in the person’s mind. This leads to a vicious circle of ongoing intrusive thoughts and acute stress begins to build up. When a person experiences this kind of stress, he is most likely to experience dissociative symptoms. This means that he may begin to feel disconnected from his body, emotions, senses, and reality in general. But, acute stress usually gets resolved after some time on its own. If the person experiences excessive distress due to acute stress, then, he can visit a doctor who may prescribe some anxiety-relieving medicines to him. Along with this, doctors usually also prescribe some self-care tips like meditation, deep breathing, and spending time in the lap of nature, to the person suffering from acute stress for his speedy recovery.

Episodic acute stress:

Episodic acute stress is when a person experiences high levels of stress even in response to relatively small events in life. For example, a person with episodic acute stress disorder may feel excessively pressurized if he misses an important deadline at work irrespective of whether his boss is angry with him or not. He may get into a stream of overthinking and imagine himself losing his job and then, spending his life in dire straits. As a result, he may start feeling panicky and get overly stressed. Although episodic stress disorder is troublesome, it is treatable with the help of some lifestyle changes and medications (if required).

Chronic stress:

The word chronic refers to events or occurrences persisting for a long time or constantly recurring. So, a person with chronic stress experiences stress, anxiety, and excessive worries almost every day. There may be several reasons as to why he experiences continuous stress such as work pressure, sour relationships, and mental health issues. Further, due to chronic stress, the levels of stress hormones like Cortisol and Adrenaline almost remain high in his body on a daily basis. As a result, he feels restless, experiences difficulties in concentrating, and gets easily irritated by the slightest of disturbances. Moreover, chronic stress can over time expose the person to a number of physical health problems such as high blood pressure, migraines, and digestive disorders. But if he makes some lifestyle changes and begins to work on stress management, he can slowly develop a strong resilience against stress and preserve his health and well-being.

SYMPTOMS OF STRESS

The existence of psychological stress and anxiety in human beings can be identified by various symptoms. As stated above, stress has an impact on different systems of the body as the body prepares to determine responses to stressors. To add, these responses are often visible in the form of symptoms. The most common indications of stress include

1. Chronic Aches

There is enough empirical evidence to support the claim that chronic stress can lead to the development of chronic pain in the body. When a person is witnessing tremendous stress inside his system, the kidneys release cortisol which is a stress hormone. Various medical studies hint at the relationship between cortisol secretion and instances of chronic aches.

2. Insomnia

Glued to social media, youngsters these days have highly disturbed sleeping patterns. While they stay awake the entire night surfing or binge-watching on gadgets, they feel drained during the day. This may seem like a habit at first but insomnia and constant lack of energy can be signs of long-term stress in human beings. 5. Fluctuations in appetite and metabolism problems

Drastic changes in appetite are common indications of stress, anxiety, and depression. Usually, people under regular stress witness fluctuations in their appetite. 1. Excessive burden at work

2. Social Media

Research shows that social media addiction can play a role in triggering social media stress or stress in general and vice versa. This stress is usually defined as technostress that is related to overwhelming information and incessant use of gadgets or digital platforms.

3. Victimization

Sometimes, some people are subjected to torture, crime, bullying, harassment, discrimination at work, or college, and sexual abuse during their course of life. Or sometimes people feel traumatized because of personal tragedies like the loss of a dear person or divorce. In all such cases, people become vulnerable to chronic stress and anxiety. Further, if these issues remain unaddressed, they can shape into depression.

4. Academic Requirements

As stated above, a lot of students start to feel stressed because of homework, their course, or schoolwork. In addition to these, there is constant pressure on them from the side of teachers and parents to perform exceptionally well. Such a burden of expectations, not letting students choose their passions, and painting failures in a bad light can make students anxious, afraid of not being able to meet the expectations, and horribly stressed.

5. Financial Instability

Source of income and financial stability are key concerns for people of all faiths and interests. People are frequently driven by the urge to secure their present and future in terms of financial steadiness. Even parents push their children hard to outperform others in academics to enhance their prospects of a sound financial future. When people are not able to attain the desired financial solidity, they often fall into the trap of stress. Stress can make an individual feel dehydrated while dehydration can make a person feel stressed. In fact, dehydration is one of the many responses to stress and medical experts suggest that drinking enough water to stay hydrated is a good way to handle stress.

8. Developing a growth mindset

An individual with a growth mindset is a proponent of the belief that intelligence and talent can be developed with hard work and persistence. People who have a growth mindset achieve higher success than others and have fewer reasons to stress about. Besides, they do not give up easily when countered with challenges and believe in investing honest efforts in overhauling destiny. For students, aspiring job-seekers, as well as industry professionals, developing such a mindset, is salient. People who are prone to stress should give priority to expanding the horizon of their minds and perspectives to be able to develop a positive attitude.

5. Parents should avoid over-burdening their kids with unrealistic expectations

High expectations from parents and teachers often make students feel really pressured. They are so afraid of letting them down that they leave no stone unturned to fulfill their expectations which exposes them to a lot of stress. To prevent children from being exposed to this kind of stress, parents should try not to set high expectations for them. 1. Teachers should keep the channels of communication open

They can do so by engaging in regular cordial conversations with their students in an informal manner. Signs of stress.

Stress can be short-term or long-term. Both can lead to a variety of symptoms, but chronic stress can take a serious toll on the body over time and have long-lasting health effects.

Some common signs of stress include:

  • Changes in mood
  • Clammy or sweaty palms
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Digestive problems
  • Feeling anxious
  • Frequent sickness
  • Grinding teeth
  • Muscle tension, especially in the neck and shoulders
  • Physical aches and pains
  • Racing heartbeat

Identifying Stress

What does stress feel like? What does stress feel like? It often contributes to irritability, fear, overwork, and frustration. You may feel physically exhausted, worn out, and unable to cope.

Stress is not always easy to recognize, but there are some ways to identify some signs that you might be experiencing too much pressure. Sometimes stress can come from an obvious source, but sometimes even small daily stresses from work, school, family, and friends can take a toll on your mind and body.

If you think stress might be affecting you, there are a few things you can watch for:

  • Psychological signs such as difficulty concentrating, worrying, anxiety, and trouble remembering
  • Emotional signs such as being angry, irritated, moody, or frustrated
  • Physical signs such as high blood pressure, changes in weight, frequent colds or infections, and changes in the menstrual cycle and libido
  • Behavioral signs such as poor self-care, not having time for the things you enjoy, or relying on drugs and alcohol to cope

Stress vs. Anxiety

Stress can sometimes be mistaken for anxiety, and experiencing a great deal of stress can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Experiencing anxiety can make it more difficult to cope with stress and may contribute to other health issues, including increased depression, susceptibility to illness, and digestive problems.

Stress and anxiety contribute to nervousness, poor sleep, high blood pressure , muscle tension, and excess worry. In most cases, stress is caused by external events, while anxiety is caused by your internal reaction to stress. Stress may go away once the threat or the situation resolves, whereas anxiety may persist even after the original stressor is gone.

Causes of Stress

There are many different things in life that can cause stress. Some of the main sources of stress include work, finances, relationships, parenting, and day-to-day inconveniences.

Stress can trigger the body’s response to a perceived threat or danger, known as the fight-or-flight response .   During this reaction, certain hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released. This speeds the heart rate, slows digestion, shunts blood flow to major muscle groups, and changes various other autonomic nervous functions, giving the body a burst of energy and strength.

Originally named for its ability to enable us to physically fight or run away when faced with danger, the fight-or-flight response is now activated in situations where neither response is appropriate—like in traffic or during a stressful day at work.

When the perceived threat is gone, systems are designed to return to normal function via the relaxation response .   But in cases of chronic stress, the relaxation response doesn't occur often enough, and being in a near-constant state of fight-or-flight can cause damage to the body.

Stress can also lead to some unhealthy habits that have a negative impact on your health. For example, many people cope with stress by eating too much or by smoking. These unhealthy habits damage the body and create bigger problems in the long-term.

Types of Stress

Not all types of stress are harmful or even negative. Some of the different types of stress that you might experience include:

  • Acute stress : Acute stress is a very short-term type of stress that can either be positive or more distressing; this is the type of stress we most often encounter in day-to-day life.
  • Chronic stress : Chronic stress is stress that seems never-ending and inescapable, like the stress of a bad marriage or an extremely taxing job; chronic stress can also stem from traumatic experiences and childhood trauma.
  • Episodic acute stress : Episodic acute stress is acute stress that seems to run rampant and be a way of life, creating a life of ongoing distress.
  • Eustress : Eustress is fun and exciting. It's known as a positive type of stress that can keep you energized. It's associated with surges of adrenaline, such as when you are skiing or racing to meet a deadline. 

4 Main Types of Stress:

The main harmful types of stress are acute stress, chronic stress, and episodic acute stress. Acute stress is usually brief, chronic stress is prolonged, and episodic acute stress is short-term but frequent. Positive stress, known as eustress, can be fun and exciting, but it can also take a toll.

Impact of Stress

Stress can have several effects on your health and well-being. It can make it more challenging to deal with life's daily hassles, affect your interpersonal relationships, and have detrimental effects on your health. The connection between your mind and body is apparent when you examine stress's impact on your life.

Feeling stressed over a relationship, money, or living situation can create physical health issues. The inverse is also true. Health problems, whether you're dealing with high blood pressure or diabetes , will also affect your stress level and mental health. When your brain experiences high degrees of stress , your body reacts accordingly.

Serious acute stress, like being involved in a natural disaster or getting into a verbal altercation, can trigger heart attacks, arrhythmias, and even sudden death. However, this happens mostly in individuals who already have heart disease.

Stress also takes an emotional toll. While some stress may produce feelings of mild anxiety or frustration, prolonged stress can also lead to burnout , anxiety disorders , and depression.

Chronic stress can have a serious impact on your health as well. If you experience chronic stress, your autonomic nervous system will be overactive, which is likely to damage your body.

Treatments for Stress

Stress is not a distinct medical diagnosis and there is no single, specific treatment for it. Treatment for stress focuses on changing the situation, developing stress coping skills , implementing relaxation techniques, and treating symptoms or conditions that may have been caused by chronic stress.

Some interventions that may be helpful include therapy, medication, and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Psychotherapy

Some forms of therapy that may be particularly helpful in addressing symptoms of stress including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) . CBT focuses on helping people identify and change negative thinking patterns, while MBSR utilizes meditation and mindfulness to help reduce stress levels.

Medication may sometimes be prescribed to address some specific symptoms that are related to stress. Such medications may include sleep aids, antacids, antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Some complementary approaches that may also be helpful for reducing stress include acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, yoga, and meditation .

Coping With Stress

Although stress is inevitable, it can be manageable. When you understand the toll it takes on you and the steps to combat stress, you can take charge of your health and reduce the impact stress has on your life.

  • Learn to recognize the signs of burnout. High levels of stress may place you at a high risk of burnout. Burnout can leave you feeling exhausted and apathetic about your job.   When you start to feel symptoms of emotional exhaustion, it's a sign that you need to find a way to get a handle on your stress.
  • Try to get regular exercise. Physical activity has a big impact on your brain and your body . Whether you enjoy Tai Chi or you want to begin jogging, exercise reduces stress and improves many symptoms associated with mental illness.  
  • Take care of yourself. Incorporating regular self-care activities into your daily life is essential to stress management. Learn how to take care of your mind, body, and spirit and discover how to equip yourself to live your best life.  
  • Practice mindfulness in your life. Mindfulness isn't just something you practice for 10 minutes each day. It can also be a way of life. Discover how to live more mindfully throughout your day so you can become more awake and conscious throughout your life.

As you know, it’s recommended to spend about 40 minutes on IELTS Writing task 2. But before starting to write your essay, it’s a good idea to dedicate 2-4 minutes to producing some ideas for your essay. This way you’ll know what to write about and your essay will be more structured.

To produce ideas for causes and solutions essay, you have to determine 3 things :

  • Causes of this problem
  • Solutions to this problem

The problem is already given: loss of bio-diversity (in other words, some animals and plants are dying out).

Now let’s think about its causes and solutions. Don’t be afraid of simple ideas! Remember: getting a high score means writing simple things well. Here are some ideas that may come to your mind:

Pollution negatively changes the flow of energy, the chemical constitution of the environment and the climate in general, so a lot of species cannot live under such conditions and die out.

After you’ve though of the possible causes, you can use them in your writing. You can invent more reasons of this problem, but usually, it’s enough to give 1-2 causes in your writing .

However, we can significantly lessen the extinction of species by protecting natural areas and enlightening people as to this problem.

How to Structure a Cause and Solution Essay [IELTS Writing Task 2]

Today, we are going to look at the process of writing an answer to a cause and solution IELTS essay . This is a common question type that will generally ask you to describe a cause (or reason) for an issue and then suggest some solutions.

What are Cause and Solution Essays?

In IELTS writing task 2, you may be asked to discuss the cause of a problem and then suggest some solutions to solve it. There are a wide array of possibilities and sometimes the words “cause” and “solution” are not actually used, so it can be a little difficult to spot these.

Here is an example:

Some people get into debt buying things they don’t need and can’t afford. What are the reasons for this behaviour? What action can be taken to prevent people having this problem?

In the first part, it does not say “what is the cause?” Instead, it says “What are the reasons…?” This is why it is important to read carefully and to think in terms of synonyms. In the second question, it does not say “solutions,” but instead says “What actions can… prevent…?” Again, if you read carefully you will realise this means “What are the solutions to the problem?”

Structure for Cause and Solution Essays

Thankfully, it is very easy to structure a cause and solution essay for IELTS. You simply need to write four paragraphs, with one body paragraph about the causes and one body paragraph about the solutions:

  • Introduction – introduce the topic
  • Body paragraph #1 – explain the causes of the problem
  • Body paragraph #2 – explain the solutions to the problem
  • Conclusion – summarise briefly

This is very, very easy to do. However, today I would like to show you a little more. In fact, I am going to discuss some complicated issues to help you produce a more advanced essay structure.

How Many Causes and How Many Solutions?

When I talk about IELTS essay structures, I often tell people to write just one main idea per paragraph. This is because for IELTS it is really important to give development and if you write too much then it can end up more like a list than an essay.

However, with cause and solution essays, you can get into multiple causes and multiple solutions if you are careful. Whilst it is fine to write one single cause and one single solution, you might find it easier to list many. However, I would suggest that you must structure this more carefully because you need to link the causes and solutions clearly.

For each cause, you could find one direct solution and link them in the following way:

I would recommend using a maximum of three problems and solutions for the aforementioned reason of development. If you wrote a list of five or six, you would not realistically be able to explain them properly.

To understand this better, let’s look at an example cause and solution question:

More and more wild animals are on the verge of extinction and others are on the endangered list. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem?

When I read this question, I first thought, “Wow! It’s really hard to answer it because it’s such a vast issue!” Thus, I would want to mention many factors. Rather than listing them, I’ll boil them down to three causes and three direct solutions:

The benefit of this method is that I can include three big ideas about the problems and then counter each of them with a specific solution. The drawback of course is that I cannot go into much detail. This will be more of a problem for the solution section because obviously issues like “ending deforestation” are incredibly complex and require a lot of discussion. However, you cannot say everything for IELTS.

In order to put across the complexity of the situation and show my understanding of it, I will mention several times that it will be difficult to solve and that the problem is very serious. I will conclude my “solutions” paragraph with a note about the unlikeliness of any real change happening because it is true and also in order to counter any complaints about my ideas being unrealistic.

Sample Band 9 Answer

It is apparent nowadays that humans have had a devastating effect on the environment, and in particular we have caused the extinction of countless species of animals. This essay will explore the reasons for this and mention some possible solutions.

To begin with, there are various causes for the reduction in animal populations around the world. Perhaps the main cause is the destruction of their environment. Humans have cut down rainforests and polluted the seas, which has meant that animal no longer have their natural habitat and thus cannot survive. Beyond that, they are poached in order to satisfy the demand for fake medicines in Asia. Every day, elephants and rhinos are killed in Africa and then sent to China. Beyond that, the growing demand for fish has meant that vast fleets of fishing boats trawl the seas, causing the eradication of wildlife there. Many whales and dolphins, for example, are caught up in these nets as a tragic by-product of the industry.

Fixing this problem will be difficult and for many species it is already too late. The most important factor will be the cessation of deforestation in places like Brazil and Malaysia. Humans have to recognise the value of nature rather than focusing on obtaining more land for farming or housing. Education needs to be drastically improved in Asia and also punishments strictly enforced to end the sadistic trafficking of animals for these so-called medicines. Finally, ethical fishing needs to be practised, with limits on trawl nets and ranges for fishing boats. Sadly, none of this is particularly likely due to a lack of concern amongst most of the citizens of the world, and so of course education must be improved before it is too late.

In conclusion, there are various factors that have caused the tragic loss of biodiversity in this world, but there are some steps that could be taken to mitigate the damage.

Sample Task

Many large cities around the world lack affordable housing. What problems does a lack of affordable housing cause? How can these problems be overcome? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Sample Essay (Band 9)

In almost every part of the world, expensive housing is closely associated with urban life. This is the underlying cause of many different problems, and civic planners are struggling to find solutions. I believe that the biggest, most important problem caused by high housing prices is homelessness. In my opinion, this problem can be addressed through rent control and welfare payments to low-income people.

Expensive urban housing leads to homelessness both directly and indirectly. The housing costs themselves cause some people to lose their homes, but such costs also drive up general prices, which can indirectly cause homelessness. For example, if a grocery store itself pays high rent, it must charge everyone more for food. This in turn forces landlords to charge more for rent in order to feed themselves. Once that happens, their tenants may have trouble paying the higher rent while also paying for more expensive food.

To reduce homelessness and make it easier for people to afford housing, I propose a twofold solution: limits on rent prices and increased welfare payments to the poor. Legally limiting rent fees will make housing much more affordable, while welfare payments can help people deal with the high costs of other goods. To give an example, if the government provides low-income people extra money for food, those people, in turn, have more room in their budget to pay rent. By employing both approaches, rent costs are directly reduced, and costs that compete with rent also go down.

In short, while expensive housing and homelessness are serious problems in cities, regulations and public assistance can help. The right kind of regulations will not only reduce the price of housing but also reduce general cost of living. This kind of government action is a win-win for everyone, whether they are homeless or not.

But this is not the case. Stress has various causes, very different from each other. Its cause could be physical anomalies, like not managing to sleep enough or having a body-related illness. Even a cold can cause stress if you don’t manage it correctly. This example tries to show that even what we consider to be ‘small anomalies’ or diseases can be the root causes of stress.

Stress can also be caused by mental health-related anomalies and disorders. Here, a major role is played from the psychological factors influencing our lives. For example, the death of a loved one could shock your nervous system and the first effect is stress. This is rather a harsh example but consider this other one. Even the insufficiency of funds to fulfill one’s desires can create stress. This can come from a temporary unemployment status or even everyday obligations and pressures in the work environment do have a stress-formation effect on you. It is this stress ‘feeling’ that makes you feel that you are not in control of your own life.

The way stress affects people depends on the individual it ‘attacks’. People react very differently to it. The most serious cases could lead to depression or even major depression and schizophrenia.

Of course, the body has various mechanisms that react to stress and stress-related incidents. But this happens in the first stages of the situation. If this stress situation is prolonged, as it might be in a work situation, it can lead to more serious problems.

Some major effects of stress relate directly to your health. Here we see that stress is not only caused by body diseases but it also affects them by becoming the cause of other diseases. Stress caused by emotions could influence the increase of your heart beatings. So, thus it will influence the increase of the blood pressure; increase the production of stress hormones, including the notorious adrenaline. “All these things increase the workload on your heart and put more pressure on your blood circulation system.” (Simon, 2009, par. 4)

For individuals with heart problems, this could result in fatal. Clinical tests show that even if the patient has only minor heart disease problems, still the result of stress can be a heart attack, sudden death, or heart failure. There is sufficient empirical evidence to demonstrate a correlation between heart attacks and sudden death due to stressful situations. As doctor Simon points out:

“These situations have been shown to increase significantly following the acute stress of natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis and as a consequence of any severe stressor that evokes “fight or flight responses.” (2009, para. 9)

The stress created by job-related problems and issues is another form of creating heart problems. But there exist other times where we form our stress. This own-formed stress contributes to coronary-related diseases. Here smoking and other faulty lifestyles could be dangerous and influence the formation of heart problems. “Traits like excess anger, hostility, aggressiveness, time urgency, inappropriate competitiveness and preoccupation with work.” (Simon, 2009, para. 12)

Studies have shown that even cigarette consumption does influence the increase of blood cholesterol levels and thus contribute indirectly to heart problems. Like the increasing consumption of cigarettes because of work-related problems there exist many other factors that do help the formation of stress which in turn influences, directly or indirectly, the general health of our bodies.

Stress, Its Causes and Effects Relationship Essay

The contemporary fast speed of life is largely associated with a big amount of stress experienced by people in everyday life. Stress can be defined as the brain’s response to any situation forcing the person to feel too much mental or emotional pressure (Hellhammer and Hellhammer 14). It is the way our body responds to any demand or threat. Understanding the diverse nature of the causes of the stress is crucial to the effective elimination of its effects, as these two factors heavily depend on each other.

The causes of stress have various origins and are highly diverse. Though stress is strongly associated with negative events, its causes can include positive experience. The main components of stress, change and pressure, can be associated both with good and bad events and, therefore, there are both negative and positive causes of stress (Aldwin 56). A person experiences significant stress both in the situation of loss of close relative and birth of a child. Besides, stressors can be classified to those that are related to everyday events (micro-stressors), those that are connected to major life events, and those that have an ambient nature.

Micro stressors include personal problems, job issues, social interaction, and other minor events happening in the life of every person on a daily basis (“Stress Management – Causes of Stress” par. 2). The causes related to major life events include marriage, graduation from college, loss of parents, etc. The ambient stressors include the external conditions that have a negative value and constitute a part of our environment, e.g. pollution or traffic jams. Severe natural disasters, such as hurricanes, and social crisis, such as wars, can be unified into a separate group of stressors (Whealin, DeCarvalho, and Vega 6; Wilson and Raphael 936).

The effects of stress include both biological and psychological manifestations. The scope of effects largely depends on the causes and the nature of stress. A person attacked by a homeless dog experience a release of hormones and chemicals associated with stress, which are aimed at making the body ensure the survival. The effects of such stress are short-term and fade after the stressor is eliminated. However, a person that is going through a divorce experience a chronic stress, which has long-term negative effects on his/her body, including problems with digestion, immune system, reproduction, etc. (“Q&A on Stress for Adults” par. 4).

Psychological effects of stress also heavily depend on its nature. A person that experiences stress after becoming a father often faces mild effects of stress, such as over excitation while a person experiencing stress after the death of a parent is more likely to have severe psychological effects, such as insomnia and hysteria, which can lead to depression or other post-traumatic problems. The effects of the stress caused by traumatic life events, natural disasters, or social crisis, can fade after a period, but certain consequences will still be likely to appear, including nightmares, panic attacks, phobia, etc.

The analysis of both causes and effects of stress reveals that these two aspects are closely interrelated. The effective prevention of stress is possible only if the person is aware of the effects of stress caused by a certain condition. For example, only after discovering the risks related to constant pressure put by enormous loads of work, the person is likely to search for a solution able to remove such permanent cause of stress. Besides, effective treatment is impossible without exploring the initial causes of the stress. For example, treating such effects of stress as panic attacks cannot be successful until the traumatic event that caused such consequences is discovered. Being aware of potential causes of the stress and understanding its effects are essential to the prevention of severe stressful situations and dealing with the consequences of prior stressful experience.

Various causes lead to stress, and diverse consequences are related to it. Understanding the causes and effects of stress is crucial both for preventive activities and elimination of negative effects of the phenomenon.

Ever since the economic crisis of early 2000 the industry has been volatile and several huge companies have been hit by loss and debts that has resulted in downsizing, layoffs, mergers and bankruptcies costing millions of people their jobs and future. Adding to that, companies have become more vigilant and have incorporated stricter surveillance for their employees and limit the health and retirement plans to control the budget especially in the corporate sector. While this may give more control to the management over the corporate operations, these measures have put the employees in stressful conditions. This paper will discuss the major causes of occupational or work place related stress, the arising consequences due to stress and possible solutions to this problem. The paper will use current available statistics and their psychological analysis to understand how stress can affect physical and mental health as well as their social living.

What is Workplace Stress?

Workplace stress is defined as the feeling of incapability or powerlessness due to harmful physical or emotional fatigue that occur if the job responsibilities are not in harmony to the abilities, wants, needs or resources of an employee. Stress can be internal as a direct response of incapability to perform job responsibilities as well as can be external caused by other individuals in the company. The American Institute Of Stress has conducted several surveys to show that work place stress is the major stress for average American adults and the statistics have shown a significant rise during the past few decades. The increasing trend in workplace stress is associated with little power and more demand from job and have been shown to cause several health conditions. In major cities such as New York and Los Angeles work stress in jobs like police and heart attacks are considered to be tightly associated and any police officer diagnosed with coronary event is treated under work related injury with due compensation.

How common is Workplace Stress?

The stats show that work stress is second most work related health issues reported, the trends show that some occupations are more stressful than others however stress is generated more from some important causes rather than the type of job. While some employees believe that they felt stressed due to being overworked and long hours others believed that external factors such as harassment, bullying or rude bosses stressed them at work. The job related stress and its growing trend is an alarming condition. While some people feel thrilled with challenging job demands others might be intimated by working in a fast lane with changing and growing demands of job. However, some factors are common that several people from the working class have reported to be stressful for them. The studies on work place stress have provided following trend as statistics: - 40% of surveyed workers reported their job as extremely stressful out of which 25% considered their jobs as the main source of stress for them. - 9% of respondents agreed that the had knowledge of assault, harassment or more serious act in their workplace and at least 18% had experienced something of that sort along with threats and intimidation in the past 1 year. - The increasing eternal stress usually from a coworker is also a major source of stress in a work environment as 14% of respondents said that the felt like acting violent with a coworker (but did not attempt) in the past year. - A large number of respondents about 80% felt stressful at their jobs and more than half of them did not know how to coup with that condition at work. These stats show that the significant increase in work related stress is nothing to be overlooked. The growing trend of stressful working environment are not limited to mental pressures, in fact 42% of respondents agreed that verbal abuse and yelling was common in workplace due to work pressure and deadlines. About 19% people had switched their jobs due to stressed environments and considered the job environment key reason to stay with a company. All these stats emphasize on the importance of identification of sources of stress in a work environment and proper purging techniques to provide a better workplace for the people that enables them to work at their best.

Major Causes of Stress At Work

While it is clear from the stats discussed above that work related stress is very common and increasing at alarming pace. It is equally important to understand the major causes of this stress. The work related stress can have different versions depending upon the type of industry and the type and level of job however there are some common factors that are involved n every stressful work environment including: control, demands, relationships/peers ,roles, support and change. Continua stressed situation due to any factor can affect other factors too and the person can stay in a vicious cycle for as long as it takes if he is unable to coup up with the stress. Following are the most common causes of stress based on the above factors:

Long & Hectic Hours

As business is getting globalized, the work hours and the pressure on employees to work for longer hours than committed is a common issue in most of the industries. People especially in subordinate or lower level are forced to work for longer hours without any extra compensation. Workload and working hour issues are the most commonly reported reason for work related stress and is more prevalent in retail and technology industries.

Work Demands

Working environments are becoming more demanding than ever. Employees are required to fulfill more than their responsibilities, stress is generated due to work-life imbalance, frequent relocations or transfers, lack of or no emotional connection between peers thus a feeling of isolation is developed. Front row workers such as retail/restaurant staff, secretaries, middle managers and customer service/support staff have the most stressed jobs as they are required to continually respond and manage demands from clients and management and have little authority to make any decision by themselves. These employees have more job demands and less authority leaving them feeling powerless yet have to fulfill the demands without arising any conflicts of interests.

Volatile Business Environment

A huge number of working class especially in the middle and lower management positions feel most stressed due t volatile nature of industries. Ever since the real estate and dotcom bubble burst shut down and bankruptcies are more common than ever. Employees stay under a sense of tension and ambiguity as companies can go down any day and mostly the lower level staff are not cleared for dues in such situations.

Interpersonal conflicts & harassment

About 59% of people surveyed for work stress stated that conflicts and behavioral issues with their peers and manager/supervisors. The concept of control and authority are the primary factors for interpersonal conflicts in a work environment, these conflicts if not handled intelligently can shape into harassment, bullying and violence. The power or authority in these scenarios can be mistreated in two ways, positional power and personal power. While positional power might enable a person to exert pressure or harass a subordinate by the leverages of their position such as not giving due rewards or promotions in spite of good efforts by the subordinate, personal power is associated with the personality of the person. It is often seen that people with intimidating personalities develop conflicts with their peers and like to handle the conflicts by bullying, harassment or miscommunications to put the other peer in difficult situations. Interpersonal conflicts are a major source of job transfers and quitting. Ambiguous Roles

Most of the times people are concerned more about the monetary reasons for working rather than to enjoy their job. In such scenarios there are often situations when the capabilities of a person do not meet the requirements, expectations and needs of a job. The continual failure of lack of achievement in a job puts the person in stress of not being able to deliver up to mark. In this competitive business era, companies encourage only the employees who can deliver more than expected and this can lead people with ambiguous roles in an organization to stay in stress.

Comfortable & functional Work setting

Though not considered a chief concern, however the design of the workplace and the comfort of being in that environment are one of the main reason of physical stress conditions. The chart shows the main factors that produce physical stress for people and can result in serious health issues, the top factors are a lack of privacy in setting and uncomfortable temperature.

Consequences of Stress

Continued stress can have serious effects on the health and wellbeing of a person. The major consequences include: - Lower immunity: The amount of energy a person loses by just stressing their minds on work related issues decreases their defense ability against diseases. This is one of the reason people start feeling week and fatigued when exposed to stressful working conditions for long. - Eating/sleep Disorders: Usually highly stressed people develop disorders in their eating and sleeping habits and often result in too much weight loss or gain. - Depression: depression is a direct consequence of stress and it leaves people in a hopelessness state where they believe that their career or life has ended and stop striving for success. - Heart Problems: continues stress and anger result in higher level f blood pressures that can result in serious health conditions such as heart or coronary attacks. - Physical/Muscular/Nerve Pains& discomforts: physical stress and too much workloads can result in physical stress such as pains, postural issues of back or neck.

Stress Management Techniques

No organixat6ion is free from stress and pressure, however successful and employee centered companies provide different mechanisms to enable their employees to coup up with any such stressful situations. Following are some of the techniques corresponding to the causes discussed previously:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that MSD(Musculoskeletal disorders) had been the most reported work related health injury and most cases were from health care, transportation and warehousing, retail and wholesale trade and construction industries. Ergonomics deals with setting up a workplace in a way to prevent physical stress and injuries. The field of ergonomics has defined rules for different industries and provides guidelines to place equipment/machines in way that the people using it are at most comfortable and safe position.

Conflict management

The HR department of any organization has the responsibility to take care of employee’s interests. Organizations need to implement conflict resolutions strategies that will enable the HR authority to identify, understand and resolve conflicts at a nascent stage rather than overlooking it to develop into a serious issue. For example, in case if a manager uses his position to harass a subordinate who might have conflicting views, the HR authority should be involved in employee performance reviews to ensure that every employee is justly rewarded and the manager cannot hide or miscommunicate the efforts. An open communication environment enables people to discuss the interpersonal issues more easily. Strict policy against discrimination and harassment have to be in place to ensure no conflicts arise due to such issues.

Open Communication

All employees like to be treated special. The management need to facilitate the employees to discuss their issues freely to report client’s demands and management’s limitations. Open sessions can also be good to discuss the corporate goals and milestones so that changes are not unexpected and abrupt and the employees feel they have a say in the company. The sense of power provides a self-assurance to the employees that enables them to manage frontline operations effectively.

Clarification of roles

Management should proactively clarify and define the roles and the responsibilities so that the employees understand what are they required to deliver, additionally hiring should be a competitive process that choses the right person for the right job. A right person with good attitude and personality in a wrong position that might not suit his abilities will be disadvantageous for the company and the individual. The management can create a good psychological environment through these simple steps that will not only motivate employees but also create a healthy workplace:

Workplace stress is a common issue and a growing trend as the business is getting more competitive than ever. Long work hours, work load, conflicts of interests, inability to perform or sheer pressure without authority all cause stress and can result in harmful psychological and physical health issues. Management of an organization is responsible to provide a clean and productive work environment that motivates an employee rather than stressing them. The management should assign roles according to the abilities and stay proactively involve with their employees to understand the needs and wants of their teams in order to facilitate them to perform. Healthy workplaces means less injuries, resignations and absentees. For management it is translated into happy and motivated workforce with better performance.

A Cause and Effect Essay on Stress in Students

Stress is the natural response the human body gives to challenges. Students are exposed to stress by various factors. When a student undergoes chronic stress or high stress levels, their ability to learn, memorize, and post good academic performances can be interfered with regardless of their age or grade. In addition to these homework assignments, there are classroom assignments and term papers that are supposed to be completed and submitted in strict deadlines. The pressure that comes from these assignments coupled with the desire by students to succeed academically culminates into stress. Students also experience pressure to do well in their academic work from those close to them such as family, friends, and even teachers (Raju, 2009). They therefore feel so much pushed that they even resort to academic dishonesty such as cheating in exams so as to match these high expectations.

A student’s stress levels can also increase due to poor nutrition and unhealthy eating habits. Foods that are associated with high stress levels in students include those that have high refined carbohydrates, sugar, caffeine, and fat. This is the case with many types of fast, processed, and convenience foods. Examples of foods that induce stress include French fries, white bread, processed snack foods, candy bars, donuts, energy drinks, and sodas (Kumar, 2015). A healthy stress-reducing diet is made up of foods that are high in complex carbohydrates and fiber and low in fat content. Examples of such foods include lean proteins, nuts, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

It is noteworthy that high stress levels can make students develop physical symptoms that could negatively affect their academic performance. These signs and symptoms include chest pain, elevated blood pressure, stomach upset, mumbled or rapid speech, nervous habits such as fidgeting, back and neck pains, tremors and trembling of lips, and frequent headaches (Kumar, 2015). When a student experiences these symptoms, they might not feel the motivation they once felt about doing their best in such academic tasks as completing assignments or preparing for tests.
