So what if I told you you’ve been lied to your whole life?

What if I told you that what you’ve been told since you were a kid about what it takes to become successful is completely wrong?

What if I told you that you did not have to be so many of the things you thought you did?

Now you’ve been lied to, and just for clarity, you weren’t lied to by your teachers, by your parents, by the adults in your life because they hate you. You’ve been lied to because they were just misguided.

For example, what if I told you, you do not have to be smart to be successful? There are a bunch of really not smart people doing very well.

But, this is what we’re told ever since we’re younger. We want to be in the smart class, don’t we? Have you ever heard a teacher say something like this to maybe you or one of your classmates : “Wow, you finished your work really, really quickly. You must be really smart.”

Do you know what’s being said and implied in that statement? What’s being implied is if it takes you a long time to do something, then you are not smart.

So when we’re younger, if we come up to an obstacle, we don’t go, ‘ Oh, this is awesome .’ We go, ‘ well, I don’t want people to know I’m not smart .’

Academic Success for Student Essay

Academic success for any student is what each and every student in learning institutions strive to get. Although every student wants to achieve academic success not each and every one of them manages to achieve academic success. This is because there are certain things that one as a student should follow to achieve academic success. Some of the most important factors that one should put into consideration and practice to achieve academic success include the following.

People smart learning style involves many factors or components and affects all round life of an individual. In order to achieve smart learning style as a student you should strive to ensure that you understand concepts and skills in different academic fields. This style means that one should strive in all fields to achieve good performance. You can not be smart in one area while the rest you are poor and say that you are smart, at least in every area you should be smart. (Littlefield, 2009)

Adopting smart learning style is not that easy it calls for balancing of the entire academic fields. This is because if there is no balance in one area you will be smart while the rest you will fail. Strive to have a balance in all academic as well as social areas in life to achieve smart learning style. (Littlefield, 2009)

Critical thinking is one of the major factors that one should put into consideration as a student in order to achieve academic success. Critical thinking means is a situation or a practice whereby as a student you do not just take the literal meaning of something but you think of that particular situation under all dimensions. Critical thinking involves taking into account all the concepts that are related to that particular situation, after taking note of the concepts then analysis of the concepts follows in order to gain deeper understanding of the situation or the concept.

Taking note and understanding all the concepts related to the situation or area of study one is analyzing is very important. This is because through understanding of the concepts it becomes easier to tackle different fields of study that one is involved in. also the skills that one has can play great role in success of the given student academically. For instance, if you have excellent writing skills you can utilize them to gain high achievements academically. There are also other personal strategies that one may have; these strategies can be used positively to achieve high grades academically. For instance in a situation whereby you do not perform well in certain filed you can involve yourself in research on certain concepts that are challenging and at the end of it you find that you have succeeded academically in that field.

Creativeness is another important factor in gaining academic success, being creative means that out of a small and minor thing you can come up with a big idea. Creativeness can work best for a student when combined together with skills and strategies that one as a student has. In order for a student to gain academic success one has to be creative on how to utilize different opportunities to gain success at the end.

However there is more of being a student than achievement of academic success though is the major goal for every student. One should strive to achieve success in all areas of life and it calls for one to have a balanced life. However gaining balanced life to many people is a challenge and it calls for commitment in all areas of life. As much as one is committed to academics he or she should be committed in other areas of life like social activities since they help in building not only the academic part of life but also building ones character. Also through social activities the mind relaxes such that one can understand different academic fields that are being learned.

In order to have a balanced life as a student there are certain changes that one has to make in life. For instance there are certain routines that one is used to that do not help in building balanced life, in order to achieve balanced life and prosper academically some of the routines should be changed. Change of routines calls for commitment and persistence, this is because routine is something that one is used to so changing from those routines is not an easier thing hence call for commitment and persistence. Through this it will be possible to overcome some of the major academic challenges that one goes through.

The last factor that one as a student should put into consideration is adoption of good habits. Practice of good habits is essential in academic success of a student, this is because practice of a certain habit in ones life results to formation of a relevant character in that person. However changing of habits is not an easy thing it calls for commitment and persistence in practice of the habits.

Learning of good habits or changing one’s habit is not easy, at one point I decided to change my study habit which was not very good and to adopt a good study habit. This is one of the things that I found to be very challenging in my life; this is because it was a must for me to through many different changes in life that I was not used to before. I was one of the students who were known for wasting time and not being very serious in my academics and changing from this kind of a lifestyle was a challenge. Though it has been challenging I am happy that today have managed to adapt good study habits and am still pursuing it.

The Key to Success in College Is So Simple, It’s Almost Never Mentioned

For Emily Zurek Small, college did what it’s supposed to do. Growing up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania, she had career and intellectual ambitions for which college is the clearest pathway. “I just kind of always wanted to learn,” she told me recently. “I wanted to be able to have intelligent conversations with people and know about the world.”

She enrolled at a small nearby Catholic college, majored in neuroscience and in 2016 became the first person in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree — and later, a master’s. She now works as a school psychologist in Virginia.

I saw Ms. Zurek Small’s education up close, in two theology classes I taught during my 11 years as a professor at the college she attended. She was a good student, but what struck me more than her ability was the fact that she cared. Being in class, asking questions and exploring ideas meant something to her.

One reason she cared was that she was paying her own way and was thus amply aware of her education’s cost. “If I was not engaging, I was just throwing money out the window,” she said. That engagement helped her realize that her “thoughts and opinions matter.”

As universities in much of the country suffer declining enrollment , they need to make the broader case for going to college even as they debate how best to help students learn after Covid disruptions. How should universities carry out remote learning ? How should they teach writing in the age of artificial intelligence ? How difficult should it be to pass organic chemistry ?

But there’s an equally important question that only students can answer: What will they do to get the most out of college? It’s their education, after all.

One of the most important factors in Ms. Zurek Small’s success seems almost too obvious to mention but, in fact, deserves far more attention and discussion: a simple willingness to learn. In more than 20 years of college teaching, I have seen that students who are open to new knowledge will learn. Students who aren’t won’t. But this attitude is not fixed. The paradoxical union of intellectual humility and ambition is something that every student can (with help from teachers, counselors and parents) and should cultivate. It’s what makes learning possible.

The willingness to learn is related to the growth mind-set — the belief that your abilities are not fixed but can improve. But there is a key difference: This willingness is a belief not primarily about the self but about the world. It’s a belief that every class offers something worthwhile, even if you don’t know in advance what that something is.

Unfortunately, big economic and cultural obstacles stand in opposition to that belief.

The first obstacle is careerism. To an overwhelming degree, students today see college as job training, the avenue to a stable career. They are not wrong, given the 70 percent wage premium for 22- to 27-year-old workers with a bachelor’s degree over those with only a high school diploma. But this orientation can close students off from learning things that don’t obviously help their job prospects. Despite the fact that I taught at a religious college, students in my theology class grumbled about having to satisfy a requirement. Why, they asked, would they need to know theology as an accountant, athletic trainer or advertising manager?

The human mind, though, is capable of much more than a job will demand of it. Those “useless” classes like philosophy, literature, astronomy and music have much to teach.

I haven’t had to solve a calculus problem in 25 years. But learning to do so expanded my brain in ways that can’t simply be reduced to a checklist of job skills. Living in the world in this expanded way is a permanent gift.

The other big obstacle to the willingness to learn is the urge to present yourself as always already informed. The philosopher Jonathan Lear calls this attitude knowingness. He regards it as a sickness that stands in the way of gaining genuine knowledge. It is “as though there is too much anxiety involved in simply asking a question and waiting for the world to answer,” he writes.

Knowingness is everywhere in our culture. From a former president claiming “everybody knows” some conspiracist nonsense to  podcasters smugly debunking cultural myths to your feeling you have to have read, heard and streamed everything, the posture of already knowing supersedes the need to approach new situations with curiosity.

Every semester during my years teaching theology, students would tell me on the first day of class that they knew they would get an A, because they’d already had 12 years of Catholic school. But often enough, they’d get a C. Their assumptions about the subject matter kept them from learning the more critical approach to the subject I was trying to teach.

Knowingness is a danger especially for talented students who have been rewarded for always having the right answer. At the University of Pennsylvania, undergraduates complain that student clubs expect prospective members to have extensive knowledge of the club’s area of interest. As a first-year student, Adrian Rafizadeh, told the campus newspaper , “If I can’t get into the clubs that will help educate me and foster that interest, then how do I even get started?”

Once, in a cafe near an elite liberal-arts college, I overheard a student lament to another, “I can’t take a Russian history class. I don’t know any Russian history!” Of course not. That’s why you take the class.

Universities are factories of human knowledge. They’re also monuments to individual ignorance. We know an incredible amount, but I know only a tiny bit. College puts students in classrooms with researchers who are acutely aware of all they don’t know. Professors have a reputation for arrogance, but a humble awareness of the limits of knowledge is their first step toward discovering a little more.

To overcome careerism and knowingness and instill in students a desire to learn, schools and parents need to convince students (and perhaps themselves) that college has more to offer than job training. You’re a worker for only part of your life; you’re a human being, a creature with a powerful brain, throughout it.

In addition, adults need to show K-12 students that it’s OK not to know something yet. School isn’t a quiz show; the first person to say the right answer doesn’t deserve the greatest reward. Rather, school should cultivate students’ curiosity and let them feel the thrill of finding something out.

I would bet most teachers already share this outlook, but it’s hard to encourage open-ended curiosity when schools are judged by standardized test scores, and it’s hard to defeat narrow-minded careerism when the entire economy seemingly mandates it.

The career orientation and the culture of knowingness take for granted the outcomes of college — jobs, knowledge — and gloss over the means. But the means are everything: the books, teachers and fellow students who will change your life.

At hundreds of colleges and universities across the country, thousands of students are in the midst of the fall semester, trying to manage the academic tasks of studying, exams, papers and lectures. A lot is riding on their academic performance – earning (or just keeping) scholarships, landing summer internships, gaining employment and of course acquiring new skills and knowledge.

The vast majority of students will tell you they intend to do well, that they know it takes hard work to succeed. But some students will end up hitting more bars and parties than books. That is, not everyone ends up putting in that hard work .

In our own work, we have found that asking college students questions like, “How important do you think it is to do well at college?” gives us essentially no information about who will do well in terms of grades.

College students are hardly unique in not following through on their intentions and goals. Frustrated parents might do well to look to their own unused gym memberships or perennial weight-loss resolutions to realize that intentions are not always sufficient to ensure steady progress toward one’s goals.

Why is there such a disconnect between our intentions and our actions? And, how can we predict who has the grit to succeed, if we can’t depend on what people tell us?

Explicit or implicit beliefs?

When people are directly asked how important they think it is to succeed at some goal, they are reporting their “explicit beliefs.” Such beliefs may largely reflect people’s aspirations, such as their sincere intentions to buckle down and study hard this semester, but these may not always map onto their subsequent inclination to persist.

Rather than depend on people’s explicit beliefs, in our research we looked instead to people’s implicit beliefs.

Implicit beliefs are mental associations that are measured indirectly . Rather than asking the person to state what they think about some topic, implicit measures use computerized reaction-time tasks to infer the strength of someone’s implicit associations. For instance, a great deal of research by psychologists Brian Nosek , Tony Greenwald and Mahzarin Banaji over the last two decades has shown that people often hold negative implicit associations about members of stigmatized racial and ethnic groups.

Even though many participants in these studies explicitly stated they believed in fairness and equality among racial groups, they nevertheless showed implicit biases toward racial and ethnic groups. In other words, whereas people “said” they were egalitarian, they in fact possessed strong negative associations in their mind when it came to certain racial groups.

Implicit associations are critical to understand because they can predict a range of everyday behaviors , from the mundane (what foods people eat) to the monumental (how people vote).

But do implicit associations predict who has the grit to succeed at life’s difficult goals?

Here’s what we did

To find out, instead of measuring people’s explicit beliefs about the importance of their goals, we measured people’s implicit beliefs about the importance of an area (e.g., schoolwork, exercise) and then measured their success and persistence at relevant tasks (e.g., grades, gym regimens).

We used a computer-based test called the “Implicit Association Test (IAT)” to measure our participants’ implicit beliefs. The test takes about seven minutes to complete. Participants have to don noise-canceling headphones and sit in a distraction-free cubicle.

In five of our studies, we used this test to measure students’ cognitive association between “importance” and “schoolwork.” Student participants were asked to indicate, as quickly as they could, using computer keys, whether each of a series of words was related to “schoolwork,” was a synonym of “importance” or was a synonym of “unimportance.” Examples of such words included “exam,” “critical” and “trivial.”

The test was set up in such a way so that even a slight difference in the speed of response (at the level of milliseconds) could reveal differences in the strength of the association between schoolwork and importance.

In short, it allowed us to measure the extent to which people implicitly believed that schoolwork was important.

Multiple studies to corroborate

Could millisecond differences in reaction times meaningfully capture people’s beliefs and predict success in their goals? For instance, could this seven-minute-long measure of milliseconds predict who would earn straight A’s in their college classes?

We found that they did. And we didn’t observe this relationship just once. We found that again and again – across seven different studies, run in different labs, with different populations and predicting different types of persistence and success. Across five studies, we found that college students’ implicit belief in the importance of schoolwork predicted who got higher grades.

We didn’t limit our study to college performance. We also tested other goals, such as going to the gym. We found that those who had a stronger association between importance and exercise were significantly more likely to exercise more often and more intensely.

Then we conducted a test to find out how implicit beliefs predicted test-taking abilities. We tested college students’ implicit beliefs about the importance of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), a widely used exam that helps determine graduate school admissions and scholarships. Those who showed a stronger association between importance and the GRE scored significantly better on a practice GRE test.

A unique measure of likelihood of success

Like any measure, ours wasn’t perfect. We couldn’t always predict in every instance who would succeed or fail. But our brief computerized test provided new insight into who was likely to succeed – an insight not captured by more traditional measures.

For example, higher SAT scores are taken to be a measure of who will likely do better at college and better on the GRE. Our data did show that SAT scores are a good predictor of both. However, knowing participants’ implicit beliefs in the importance of school or the GRE predicted success over and above what SAT scores could tell us. In other words, even when two people scored the same on the SAT, the one with the stronger implicit belief about the importance of the GRE tended to score better on the practice exam.

One interesting finding in our studies was that implicit beliefs predicted some people’s success more than others. Closer examination showed that those for whom exerting self-control was difficult – those who said they have trouble completing assignments on time, who could be easily dissuaded from making it to spin class or who have difficulty maintaining focus during long reading comprehension passages – were those who most benefited from having a strong implicit belief that the goal was important.

In other words, it was those individuals in need of a boost who most clearly benefited from the implicit nudge that their pursuits were important.

What exactly is the role of implicit beliefs?

Our work adds to a growing body of evidence that the ordinarily hidden-from-view, implicit associations in our mind offer new insights about many everyday decisions and behaviors.

For example, just as implicit associations can predict intergroup behavior , first impressions of other people and voting behavior , our new findings show that they also predict success at some of life’s most challenging tasks.

However, there are still some questions that remain. For example, do implicit beliefs in the importance of working hard actually cause people to do better, or do they simply identify who is likely to succeed? Could changing people’s implicit beliefs have real effects on their prospects for success?

To be clear: It is certainly not the case that what people say about how much they care about something does not matter at all. Indeed, we would guess that people who say they care nothing about exercising will not be heading to the gym, regardless of their implicit associations between exercise and importance.

But, especially among those who say they do care about something – such as the vast majority of college students caring about their performance at school – a measure of their implicit beliefs may give us a better idea about how likely they are to succeed.

The dreaded college essay. For many high school seniors, those few hundred words can manifest into an unyielding sense of existential, unwavering angst. They might seem daunting, but these few paragraphs often present one of the best opportunities for students to write honestly and express themselves in a college application process dominated by standardized tests, high school transcripts, and other numbers first metrics. 

Knowing what to write about, or how to write it, can be challenging. Luckily, millions of other students have already gone through the process. To shed some much-needed light on what types of essays work for which schools, Insider is reaching out to students from all around the world and publishing the essays that got them into their dream schools. The first school on our list: New York University.

NYU had over 75,000 applicants last year. Only 16% were accepted. 

New York University's main campus is located in the heart of downtown Manhattan and has a total student body of just over 60,000. 

But just because there are lots of students doesn't mean its acceptance rates are high.  NYU's acceptance rate for the class of 2023 dropped drown to 16 percent , the lowest admissions rate in the school's history. The school received over 75,000 applications last year but says it still manages to review each one individually. 

Students applying to NYU will have to complete the common app, submit test scores ( or other approved documents ) and complete a supplemental essay question. Here's the essay question NYU class of 2021 student Vanessa Ting was asked:

While there's no one size fits all approach to any essay questions, and the specific questions change from year to year, NYU's essay tends to favor students who weave personal narratives into a short but compelling story that explains their path to finally deciding on NYU.
