The design of VLSI electronic circuits can be achieved at many different abstraction levels starting from system behavior to the most detailed, physical layout level. As the number of transistors in VLSI circuits is increasing, the complexity of the design is also increasing, and it is now beyond human ability to manage. Hence CAD (Computer Aided design) or EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools are involved in the design. EDA or CAD tools automate the design, verification and testing of these VLSI circuits. In today’s market, there are many EDA tools available. However, they are very expensive and require high-performance platforms. One of the key challenges today is to select appropriate CAD or EDA tools which are open-source for academic purposes. This thesis provides a detailed examination of an open-source EDA tool called Electric VLSI Design system. An excellent and efficient CAD tool useful for students and teachers to implement ideas by modifying the source code, Electric fulfills these requirements. This thesis' primary objective is to explain the Electric software features and architecture and to provide various digital and analog designs that are implemented by this software for educational purposes. Since the choice of an EDA tool is based on the efficiency and functions that it can provide, this thesis explains all the analysis and synthesis tools that electric provides and how efficient they are. Hence, this thesis is of benefit for students and teachers that choose Electric as their open-source EDA tool for educational purposes.

Digital Pulse-Width Modulation Control in Power Electronic Circuits: Theory and Applications

Angel vladimirov peterchev and seth r. sanders, eecs department, university of california, berkeley, technical report no. ucb/eecs-2006-22, march 13, 2006, http://www2.eecs.berkeley.edu/pubs/techrpts/2006/eecs-2006-22.pdf.

This thesis develops digital pulse-width-modulation (DPWM) control of switching power converters. A target application is microprocessor voltage regulation which requires high efficiency and tight output load-line control. A general framework for load-line control is developed, which encompasses relevant capacitor technologies, such as electrolytics and ceramics. It is shown that load-current feedforward can overcome the limited bandwidth of conventional feedback load-line control. The size of the output capacitor is then determined solely by transient and switching-ripple considerations, which are derived. This work enables microprocessor voltage-regulator implementations using a small number of ceramic output capacitors, while running at sub-megahertz switching frequencies.

Efficient DPWM controller implementations are discussed, addressing system stability issues unique to digital control. The existence of limit cycles is analyzed, as well as conditions for their elimination. Digital dither is introduced as a method to increase the effective DPWM resolution, thus preventing limit cycling, and enabling low-power, small-area DPWM implementations. A method for direct control of synchronous rectifiers as a function of the load current is developed. The function relating the synchronous-rectifer timing to the load current is optimized on-line with a perturbation-based power-loss-minimizing algorithm. This approach provides fast synchronous-rectifer adjustment, robustness to disturbances, and the capability to simultaneously optimize multiple parameters. It also accomplishes an automatic, optimal transition to discontinuous-conduction mode at light load, thus improving converter effciency. Efficiency is further enhanced by imposing a minimum duty-ratio limit to effect pulse-skipping at very light load. Three experimental buck converters are developed to illustrate different aspects of this work. Simulations are used to further corroborate the results.

Digital circuits, often called Integrated Circuits or ICs, are the central building blocks of a Central Processing Unit (CPU). To understand how a computer works, it is essential to understand the digital circuits which make up the CPU. This text introduces the most important of these digital circuits; adders, decoders, multiplexers, D flip-flops, and simple state machines.

ELECTROPLATED 3D PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS WITH UNIQUE GEOMETRY

Printed Circuit Boards have become a vital component in the connected world in which we live in today. They can be found in all electronic devices, but their shape and function has been limited by the manufacturing capabilities of PCBs. The methods for manufacturing PCBs are well researched and optimized but have pitfalls as they are only capable of producing two dimensional, planar devices. As the demand for more integrated circuitry and electronics in devices like wearable technologies increases so will the need for a more flexible method for producing PCBs.

The purpose of this study was to create and analyze a method of creating PCBs using multi-material 3D printing and an electroplating process. The analysis includes an experimental procedure that will conclude whether the specimens created can conduct electricity at the same level of traditionally manufactured PCBs. This research proposed a procedure for manufacturing the PCBs and a testing apparatus designed to inject current at a specified level into the specimens so that the voltage could be measured. This allowed for the resistance of the specimens to be calculated and compared to known values for common materials used in PCB manufacturing.

  12. Application of Machine Learning in Digital Logic Circuit Design

table of a circuit the behavior of a circuit can be predicted. For example, if ML model is trained to predict the output of 2-bit adder then the same ML model can be used to predict the output for 3,4,5, etc. bit adders. Therefore, the use of ML model in digital design verification and testing can reduce the time for verification

  13. Exploring Analog and Digital Design Using the ...

The design of VLSI electronic circuits can be achieved at many different abstraction levels starting from system behavior to the most detailed, physical layout level. As the number of transistors in VLSI circuits is increasing, the complexity of the design is also increasing, and it is now beyond human ability to manage. Hence CAD (Computer Aided design) or EDA (Electronic Design Automation ...

  14. PDF Shannon and Digital Circuits

Shannon's contributions to digital circuit design. With his MSc thesis, Shannon introduced the use of Boolean algebra in the analysis and design of switching circuits. The theoretical rigor of Shannon's work superseded the ad hoc methods in existence. His work became the foundation of computer aided digital circuit design:

  15. Tunnel FETs and Its Application to Digital Circuits

This thesis studies some TFET based digital circuits and their performances. Since analytical models for Tunnel FETs are not available so the best way for circuit simulations is to build a Look up ...

  20. Incremental Test Pattern Generation for structurally similar circuits

The advancement of semiconductor technology has resulted in the development of devices that are fast, cost-effective, low-power, and high-performance. Many gates are integrated into smaller areas, resulting in increased complexity of digital circuits. Increased size and complexity result in a large number of faults, which increases the time taken to test the circuit. However, as the size of ...
