There’s no doubt you know United Airlines (and may have even flown with them before), but are you aware of their different fare types, the ins and outs of their baggage allowances, and all of their extra fees/add-ons? What about their seat specs and their consumer satisfaction ratings?

This helpful guide covers all you need to know about this large U.S. carrier so you hopefully won’t be caught unaware on your next flight.

In this post you’ll find a general company overview, ticketing/fare options, extra fees/add-ons (including baggage allowances ), cabin class amenities, seat specs, and more.

United Airlines Route Map

United’s fare types are pretty standard for a large U.S. carrier. But with stiff competition from lots of low-cost airlines, United recently introduced a Basic Economy fare — which pretty much just gets you a seat on the plane.

Handy for those traveling light, this reduced and restricted fare does not include any standard carry-on or checked luggage.

And for anyone part of United’s frequent flyer program (covered later on in this article), you won’t be eligible for premier qualifying miles that go toward your elite status when flying in this class.

Below are the additional differences in fare types and cabin classes, with inflight amenities covered later on in this article:

Basic Economy (most restrictive fare):

  • Pre-assigned seat before boarding
  • Family or group seating not possible
  • First checked bag costs an additional $120 (round-trip)
  • Upgrades not available
  • Changes or refunds not permitted

Economy (standard):

  • Seat selection at time of booking (if available)
  • Customize your booking with other options

Economy (flexible):

  • Refundable ticket (subject to cancellation fees)

Premium Plus:

  • Spacious, larger seating with extra legroom
  • Complimentary food and beverage
  • Enhanced dining with complimentary food and beverage

The availability of certain cabin classes is dependent on the route and plane type. We’ve also covered how you can upgrade to business or first class on United Airlines .

Economy Plus

If you’re looking for a little extra legroom, you can upgrade your booking to Economy Plus. This will also seat you closer to the front of the aircraft so you can disembark quicker.

You can upgrade as a one-off, or subscribe to yearly upgrades when booking a regular economy ticket (where Economy Plus is available).

United Airlines MileagePlus

MileagePlus is United’s frequent flyer loyalty program where you can earn miles to redeem against reward flights and work your way up membership tiers to gain elite benefits, such as priority check-in and additional luggage.

These reward miles can also be used against flights with other Star Alliance members. You can earn miles through flying, shopping, dining out, and spending on certain credit cards.

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our article on United’s MileagePlus frequent flyer program .

Hot Tip: Check out our post on United Airlines’ boarding policy so you’ll know what to expect from the boarding process as almost all airlines have a different procedure!

United Customer Satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is a real mixed bag with United Airlines. Their social media channels and Tripadvisor reviews seem to attract many compliments from loyal customers, which is unusual as these outlets are often utilized to rant and rave about poor service!

Additionally, their PR team is pretty genius, sponsoring a number of great causes and shouting about their good deeds on social media — so even if the service was only mediocre for a customer, their philanthropic ways may improve consumer brand impression.

Lost baggage is a real gripe for United customers, being one of the most prominent issues on review sites. Also, inconsistencies of aircraft age can lead to disappointment in inflight amenities.

One customer complaint we found said they had experienced a seat-back entertainment system on once international flight and not on another. That’s going to disappoint any traveler.

United prides itself on their personal device entertainment, but this does rely on the customer having a smartphone/tablet at their disposal.

United Airlines had 1,169 complaints lodged against them from January-September 2018 according to the  September 2018 Air Travel Consumer Report . The chart below represents the complaints by category.

  • Flight problems (cancellation, delay, or misconnection): 292
  • Baggage: 185
  • Customer service: 174
  • Reservation, ticketing, boarding: 110
  • Disability : 86
  • Refunds: 45
  • Oversales: 34
  • Discrimination: 8

There are a number of different review websites out there when it comes to airline ratings. Here are a few of the most popular so you can see the general consumer opinion for United Airlines.

TripAdvisor Airline Review Rating:  3/5 (average from 36,791 reviews)

Kayak Customer Rating: 7/10 (average from 61,414 reviews)

AirHelp.com Overall Rating: 7.59/10 (departure/arrival performance, service, and satisfaction of claims processing)

Airlineratings.com Safety Rating :  7/7 (takes into consideration whether the airline has an IATA Operational Safety Audit Certification, government and crash records, plus information from the World’s Aviation Governing Body).

United Airlines Charities

United Airlines supports numerous charities across their main hub locations and across the globe. It strives to be a more sustainable airline supporting environmental charities and operations such as Clean the World and Conservation International.

United also supports many youth projects, including Youth Guidance with the goal of inspiring future leaders.

Overall, customer satisfaction seems to be somewhere in the middle for United — and as with other legacy U.S. carriers, there will always be a place for the airline with reasonable fares and route availability.

United will never have the sass and style of Virgin Atlantic or the service and luxury of the Middle Eastern airlines, but it serves its purpose and does have a loyal customer base (although this may be dwindling slightly, with many referencing the “good old days” when United was great).

Their current focus seems to be on revamping their premium cabins, with their Polaris offering in business and first — but we’re hoping they don’t neglect economy for too much longer either.

Cool new United feature notifies you if your preferred seat becomes available

Zach Griff

United Airlines' mobile app has long been one of the best in the industry, and it's getting even more useful with this new feature.

Beginning Friday, March 22, travelers will be able to sign up for seat notifications and get automatically moved if their preferred seat is not available at the time of booking, as confirmed by a United spokesperson.

When booking (or managing) a flight on the mobile app, you'll be able to request your desired seat while browsing the seat map.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free biweekly Aviation newsletter .

For instance, if you're booking just a few days before departure and only middle seats are left, you can set an alert to be automatically moved to a window or aisle seat if one becomes available.

united airlines flight seat assignment

The app will also allow you to opt into notifications for exit rows and bulkhead (first-row) seats. If your desired seat choice becomes available, the app will automatically reassign your seat and notify you that it processed the seat change.

For example, if you set a seat preference alert three days before your flight, United will start monitoring for your preference, and if it becomes available up to 12 hours before departure and you're next in line, the airline will automatically move you to a new seat and send you a notification about it.

United didn't share how frequently it will check the seat map on your behalf.

This new app feature will begin rolling out on Friday to a small group of customers, followed in the weeks ahead by a broader rollout to additional flyers. United didn't share which travelers would be in the first tranche of eligible users, but we'll update this story with some firsthand experiences when we get our hands on the feature.

For United travelers, this is a nifty new (and free) service that should incentivize more downloads and engagement with the app. United says that 3 million flyers use its app on a daily basis.

It's also the latest feature that United has debuted to simplify the digital travel experience, building on initiatives such as Live Activities on the latest iPhone devices and a new all-in-one rebooking center for delays and cancellations .

As part of the news, United has become the first and only U.S. airline to offer a seat preference feature.

For those booking tickets on other airlines, there are several third-party tools that can monitor your seat assignment and notify you if better seats become available. This includes ExpertFlyer , which allows you to set seat alerts on most major airlines and sends email and text notifications when seats open up. (ExpertFlyer is owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures.)

How to Navigate Costly Airline Seat Selection Fees

Airlines always seem to have one more trick up their sleeves for adding fees to the cost of airfare. Anyone who has flown in the past few years knows that some airlines now charge for basics, like carry-on bags and a printed boarding ticket. Yet one sneaky charge is often ignored by even savvy travelers: seat selection fees.

On the surface, there’s nothing complicated about these fees. Some airlines will let you select a specific seat for a markup on the base cost of your ticket. However, the way the fees are presented is often misleading, making it seem like you must select a seat and pay the accompanying fee.

united airlines flight seat assignment

A seat selection chart from Frontier Airlines.

This approach, in which companies add fees throughout the checkout process, is called “drip pricing” by experts. And research indicates that it's an effective sales tactic, both for confusing customers and driving up overall prices.

But here’s the thing: You almost never have to pay these fees. Here’s how to avoid — or at least minimize — these pesky fees.

Ways to avoid seat selection fees

Skip seat selection altogether.

Though it might sound scary, there's one weird trick airlines don’t want you to know: You don’t have to select a seat. On most airlines, you'll get assigned a seat at check-in or at the gate if you don’t already have one.

Some airlines make it seem like you must (or at least should) select a seat during checkout. Frontier Airlines even has a graphic interstitial page telling you why selecting a seat is such a great option.

united airlines flight seat assignment

Don’t fall for it. You can always skip seat selection and save the money, but do keep a few things in mind:

Skipping seat selection doesn’t mean you won’t get a seat on the flight.

You might get stuck in the middle seat if you don’t pay for one.

Even if seat selection is free, you might want to skip it if only lousy seats are available (see the "upgrade hack” below).

Pick an airline with lower seat fees

Part of what’s so confusing about these fees is how inconsistently the industry is applying them. Unlike change and cancellation fees, which most U.S. airlines recently abolished, many airlines seem to be increasing the upcharge on selecting seats.

But some are charging much more than others.

According to an analysis of airline fees by NerdWallet, Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines charge the least for seat selection, while Frontier and Spirit Airlines charge the most.

Airlines with modest seat fees (less than $10 each leg):

Airlines with high seat fees ($15-plus each leg):

Southwest Airlines doesn’t technically charge for nor allow seat selection in the same way as other airlines, so it's excluded from this data. But you won’t get charged a seat selection fee on Southwest during checkout, so it’s also a good option.

Roll the dice with an upgrade hack

As a regular, non-frequent flyer, it’s hard to get your seat upgraded these days. Yet skipping seat selection sometimes offers the opportunity to get bumped into premium seating.

Here’s how it works. Airlines now offer a “premium economy” fare or similar. Sometimes, all of the good seats — including the exit rows — are considered premium. The airlines try to charge extra for these seats, but if nobody takes them and the flight is full, they have to assign them to somebody.

Specifically, airlines will assign these empty, better seats to those passengers who haven't selected a seat. So if you put yourself in this pool, you have a chance of scoring an even better seat than those who paid extra for advance seat selection.

Of course, there’s a potential downside: You could very well get stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane rather than getting upgraded. But if you notice that your flight is full and not many passengers have upgraded to the good main cabin seats, skipping seat selection altogether can be an expert-level travel move.

» Learn more: How families can get seats together on a plane

Don’t pay for advance seat selection

Airlines are playing the same game. They want to show the lowest fares possible on search results, then upsell you during checkout. This drip-pricing tactic is a pain for passengers . Charging for seat selection is one way airlines try to make a buck at the last minute.

Know your options and avoid their trickery. Skip seat selection altogether or fly an airline with limited seat fees, like Alaska, Hawaiian or JetBlue. Each charges little or nothing for choosing a seat. Worst case, you’ll end up in the middle seat. Best case, you’ll get a seat with extra legroom.

When It’s Okay (And When It’s Not) To Swap Your Assigned Flight Seat

C ommercial airlines have mandated assigning seats since the beginning of the airline industry. Except for very few carriers, like Southwest Airlines, most flights come with a specific seat assignment.

For most travelers, this is neither surprising nor confusing, but you’d be surprised how often travelers forget, change, or even totally disregard their assigned seat. People move seats all the time, on nearly every flight. So it’s no big deal, right?

Here’s why moving your seat on a plane can be inappropriate, and when it’s okay to do it.

Unknown Expectations

According to one flight attendant and TikTok user, it is a big deal. In a now-deleted video, TikTok user @destanieaaa shared an experience where someone asked if they could move seats. She told them no because she was expecting a full flight.

When she walked away, she said, the passengers moved anyway. The flight had not yet taken off and the cabin door was still open. Shortly after, other passengers, likely also unaware that more people were expected, began to move, too. She said the passengers who had moved were getting comfortable in seats that did in fact belong to other people who simply hadn’t boarded yet.

Before long, the flight attendants had to make an announcement reminding everyone to return to, and remain, in their assigned seats.

The TikTok user noted that instances like this can make a flight attendant’s job harder.

But, seriously…is it really that important?

Avoiding Disruption

The answer is… (mostly) yes. There are three major reasons it matters: moving can be disruptive to the cabin; it can impact the plane’s balance; and it could be against the airline’s policies.

First, moving can be disruptive. If one person moves, another might want to move. And so on. Then, before the flight lands, lots of people are up and moving around which is not ideal for a flight. It can also create conflict. A person might be moving into a seat or row that other people don’t want them to be in. While these issues are usually settled quickly, it does create more work for the flight crew who, contrary to popular belief, aren’t there to resolve seating issues.

Second, the plane has to be balanced for smoother flying. While seats might appear empty and open for the taking, the flight crew has internal responsibilities related to balancing the plane that passengers are often unaware of. If there are 40 people on the left side and nearly the same on the right, just a few people moving seats could impact that even weight.

Third, some airlines have specific rules about swapping seats. Some even explicitly forbid it without paying an extra fee or getting the permission of a member of the flight crew. Ignoring the policy can mean risking being able to fly with the airline or being assessed a fee later.

The Right Way and Time

The easiest way to secure a seat change is to have it done formally, before the flight. This can be done either through the airline’s app or website or with a gate agent or customer service representation before checking in to the flight

Another way to secure a move is to ask a flight attendant, The timing of the ask depends on the circumstances. If boarding seems to be nearing its end and there are many seats open, it’s okay to ask the flight attendant before the door closes. This doesn’t mean a guaranteed “yes,” but the flight attendant will determine whether, or when, the move is possible.

On the other hand, a delayed flight that has a rushed boarding or feels chaotic might not be the best time to ask. In situations like this, it’s probably better to observe where a seat might be open and ask after boarding is complete.

If the flight is completely full, it’s probably best not to ask.

The last way to secure a potential seat move is to ask a fellow passenger. Rather than shouting ” Does anyone want to trade seats,” it’s best to ask a specific passenger if they mind swapping. And it’s easier to do an equal switch. This means you’re in an aisle seat swapping with another person in an aisle seat, or you’re in economy swapping with someone in the economy. Be realistic and fair. A middle seat in economy isn’t really a fair, or realistic, trade with a window seat in business class, or extra legroom seating.

Overall, it’s possible to move seats on an airplane; just get permission, be realistic, and don’t be disruptive.

Since the flight is operated by Lufthansa you can't choose the seats on the United Website. You are redirected to the Lufthansa website. on the LH.com website you find a note :

"Conditions of your ticket do not allow for seat reservations on LH.com. Please contact our service center at:

1-800-645-3880 or select seats during check-in."

I called the number and the LH rep told me that an advanced seat reservation is $40 per seat, or get free seat assignments 23 hour before departure. I told her that I bought the more expensive ticket so that I can choose my seats. We are a family of four and want to sit together and we don't want to sit next to the lavatory. The LH rep basically told me that I can pay for the seats or complain with United.

Called back United, they said they can't do anything because the Lufthansa rules apply.

So here I paid United $150/ticket extra to get advanced seat assignments and then Lufthansa wants to charge me an additional fee of $40/ticket.

Basically the airlines want me to pay TWICE for ONE advanced seat assignment.

Any advice how to resolve this issue?

' class=

Other than pay Lufthansa to select seats, no. You can argue more with united that they didn’t make the seat assignment policy clear but I don’t think it’ll get you anywhere. Economy has more advantages over basic economy than just seat selection so I think United will say they provided what you bought, an economy ticket. You’re getting the free bag plus ability to change for the extra cost.

united airlines flight seat assignment

Fares have become very complicated as to what is included. You really have to check out all of the details before purchasing, as things change for many reasons. Domestic and international rules can be different, such as you get one free bag on UA for an international trip in Economy ( I believe BE pays $60 for the first bag) but not domestic, unless you fly in a higher class (BC or FC), have their credit card, or other status. Seat assignments are tricky as to when you get free seat assignments in advance and when you don't. Most European airlines seem to charge for advance seat assignments.

Certainly gets confusing but from my experiences with codeshares, especially on UA, I don't think you're going to win any arguments with UA or LH.

"With economy: Complimentary seat assignments are only offered when available on United and United Express flights . There may be a charge for Economy seat assignments on our partner airlines ."

Seating Accommodations

Seat assignment criteria.

Under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), airlines are required to provide certain seating accommodations to passengers with disabilities who self-identify as needing to sit in a certain seat. If you are a passenger with one of the disability-related needs listed below and self-identify as such to the airline, you may qualify for one of the following types of seating accommodations:

  • Movable Aisle Armrest : If you use an aisle chair to access the aircraft, and cannot transfer readily over a fixed aisle armrest.
  • Bulkhead Seat or Other Seat : If you are traveling with a service animal, that is best accommodated at a particular seat.
  • Greater Leg Room : If you have a fused or immobilized leg and need a seat that better accommodates your disability, including an aisle seat or a bulkhead seat.
  • A personal care attendant who performs a function that is not required to be performed by airline personnel, for example assisting you with eating;
  • A reader if you are blind or visually impaired;
  • An interpreter if you are deaf or hard of hearing; or
  • A safety assistant, for example if you cannot assist with your own evacuation.

Note : If the conditions above do not apply to your situation, the airline is still required to provide you with a seat assignment that best accommodates your disability. This may include one of the seating accommodations listed under “Seat Assignment Criteria” above. However, if you do not meet the airline’s seating assignment criteria (ex. you did not check-in on time), the airline must only provide the seating accommodation to the extent practicable.

Things to Know

Do most airlines provide advance seat assignments for passengers with disabilities?

  • Yes. Depending on the type of seating method your airline uses and your particular disability-related need, you may be required to ask for a specific type of seating accommodation more than 24 hours in advance or to check in one hour before the standard check-in time for the flight.

Do all airlines provide advance seat assignments?

  • No. Some airlines do not provide advance seat assignments.
  • If your airline does not provide an advance seat assignment, you can request to board the aircraft before other passengers if you need additional time or assistance to board, stow accessibility equipment, or select a seat that best meets your needs.

Should I contact the airline in advance if I need to sit in a particular seat due to my disability?

  • Yes. If you have a disability and would prefer or need a certain type of seating accommodation, you should contact the airline at the time you make your reservation to learn more about the method that the airline uses to make arrangements for a seating accommodation.

If I have a temporary disability (ex. broken leg), can I still receive a seating accommodation?

  • Yes. If you have a fused or immobilized leg, airlines are required to provide you with a seating accommodation that accommodates your need for more leg room.

Must an airline provide me with a seat in a different class of service to accommodate my disability?

  • No. Although airlines may choose to seat you in another class of service to accommodate your disability, they are not required to provide you a seat in a class of service other than the one you paid to sit in.  For example, if you paid for a seat in Economy Class, the airline is not required to seat you in Business Class to accommodate your disability.

Must an airline provide an extra seat free of charge for a passenger with a disability who needs that space?

  • No. Airlines are not required to furnish more than one seat per ticket purchased.  However, if you need an extra seat, you can purchase one.

Can an airline require you to change your assigned seat or sit in a bulkhead seat because you are traveling with a service animal?

  • Generally, no. But an airline may do so to comply with FAA or applicable foreign government safety regulations.  For example, you may be asked to change seats if you are traveling with a service animal that blocks access to the emergency exit.

Can I sit in an exit row?

  • Airlines must always comply with FAA and foreign government safety rules.  Although there are exit row seating restrictions that may, they don’t always prohibit certain passengers with disabilities from sitting in an exit row seat.

Seating Accommodation Tips

Before Your Trip

  • You should make reservations as early as possible and request the needed seating accommodation.
  • You should know that individuals with a service animal or a fused leg have priority  for the bulkhead seats.  Airlines that provide advance seat assignments to passengers must either (1) block an adequate number of bulkhead seats for passengers traveling with a service animal or who have a fused leg; or (2) designate an adequate number of bulkhead seats as “priority” seats for such passengers.
  • Be aware that while an airline is not required to allow you to select a specific seat, it is required to provide you a seat that meets your needs (with certain limitations for bulkhead seats and emergency-exit seats).
  • You should know that airlines are not required to upgrade you to a higher class of service to accommodate your disability.   Airlines are also not required to provide more than one seat per ticket.

At the airport

  • When you arrive at the airport and check in at the ticket counter, confirm with the airline that it has a record of your seating accommodation request.
  • If you need additional time or assistance to board the aircraft, consider requesting to pre-board. Airlines must allow passengers with disabilities the opportunity to pre-board who self-identify at the gate as requiring additional time or assistance to be seated or stow accessibility equipment. A passenger must make a request to the gate agent to take advantage of this opportunity.

On the aircraft

  • You are entitled to a bulkhead seat if you are traveling with a service animal or have a fused or immobilized leg. Airlines are also required to provide other available bulkhead seats to passengers with other types of disabilities if they need it to readily access the air transportation service.
  • If you have given advance notice to the airline about the seating accommodation you need and have received a seat assignment, and there is an aircraft change, your request for accommodation should be transferred to the new seating map for the replacement airplane. While the airline may not guarantee that you receive the exact same seat assignment, the new seat assignment should provide the same level of accommodation that your original seat assignment does.

Encounter A Problem?

  • If you believe your rights under the Air Carrier Access Act are being or have been violated, ask to speak with a Complaints Resolution Official (CRO). A CRO is the airline’s expert on disability accommodation issues. Airlines are required to make one available to you, at no cost, in person at the airport or by telephone during the times they are operating.

  17. Seat Assignment on United / Lufthansa Code Share

Advance seat assignments on codeshares is a frequent topic here. It basically comes down to what the rules are for the airline operating the flight. While UA does allow for free seat assignments on the routes it actually flies, that does not carry over to any of the partner airlines (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian to name a few). We have encountered this with codeshares, particularly with LH.
