Vattam Movie Review: A shoddy hyperlink drama that runs around in circles
Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).
Director Kamalakannan's Vattam has a good-looking Sibi Sathyaraj in his most blitheful role, extensive drone shots of scenic Coimbatore, and a gorgeous car. These are probably the only few good things I will remember from this majorly disappointing piece of work. It doesn't take long for us to realise that this 'hyperlink thriller' has tracks that aren't actually related to each other and their point of convergence is so contrived that it leaves us furious and annoyed, instead of feeling amused.
Cast: Sibi Sathyaraj, Andrea Jeremiah, Athulya Ravi, Vamsi Krishna
Director: Kamalakannan
Streaming On: Disney+Hotstar
Mano (Sibi) decides to get dead drunk on the eve of his ex-girlfriend's (Athulya) wedding but gets thrown out of the wine shop. One might expect him to gatecrash the reception, considering he isn't a man of great values and on top of everything, he got cheated. But, he goes on to kidnap a random businessman named Gautham (Vamsi Krishna) he bumps into and eventually swaps Gautham's wife Parvathy (Andrea) as the hostage. Well, the randomness doesn't end there. Parvathy and Mano start arguing about true love, security in life, chauvinism, and feminism in the most inorganic, dramatic way possible. When I say 'drama' it is clearly not an exaggeration as Andrea switches to 'thooya tamizh' often to stress a point to her kidnapper! Oh, there is also a side-track involving a bunch of laid-off IT people, who are also in the mood for a kidnap. But their story barely develops as the maker himself chooses to focus only on the confused Parvathy-Mano conversation and the mundane flashback love story of Mano. Thinking again, the title Vattam feels largely like a self-mockery by the makers of the film, as the story leads nowhere and only goes around in 'circles'.
The film wouldn't have been such a tough watch if director Kamalakannan had decided to have fun with the limited story and write characters that don't take themselves seriously. But what is in the offering is just the opposite. Almost all the characters firmly believe that they are crusaders of social justice, but all they do is succumb to the evil they are posing to fight against.
Why doesn't Andrea take a cleverer detour and escape even when she had the car under her control? How does Gautham's family remain asleep all the while during the kidnap episode? Why doesn't he try getting help from the police, especially when he knows the location of the kidnapper? If one had to complain about the loopholes in the plot, then it would potentially turn into a bigger rant session than the ones we see on screen.
Sibiraj's Mano is a man who is keen on getting his closures. Be it a relationship or a simple conversation, he gets furious when he is left in the dark. But I guess, we the audience have more reasons to be enraged than Mano, as the whys and hows on our end clearly outweigh his struggles.

'Trigger' movie review: Great action set-pieces but just all over the place
Sam Anton's Trigger has a promising start. The film introduces us to an unlikely gang of ex-cops, terminated for choosing justice over the law. Led by Atharvaa's Prabhakaran, they set out on a mission to weed out the dirty cops in the department. By this time, I was certain that the film couldn't derail, especially when the roles are played by competent actors like Chinni Jayanth, Munishkanth, Nisha and Anbu Thasan. But, I couldn't have been more wrong.
The film goes out of its way to spoil whatever it had got right till then. New sub-plots keep piling up without essential emotions and detailing, only to end up with a series of generic reveals at the end. I guess director Sam must have planned these 'reveals' to be his final trump card. He holds them back till the last moment. The reveals had to work on a different level altogether. If only.
Trigger suffers from a dilemma of having to choose between being a fun actioner and a suspense drama that takes itself too seriously. One might argue saying that's how Tamil commercial cinema has always been. While the mashup of genres is par for the course, the genre shifts in Trigger are, for lack of a better word, jarring. The problem with Trigger is that it tries to be everywhere, everything, and all at once, without a single honest moment.
The evident effort and investment that has gone into the action sequences are clearly missing in the rest of the film. There is an interesting idea of parallel crimes, a hurried homage to Murali's 'Pottu Vaitha Oru Vatta Nila', and a powerful visual of the villain witnessing the commissioner's office on fire. But then, none of these is remotely fleshed out to give us more memorable moments.
ALSO READ | 'Babli Bouncer' review: Cluttered writing gatekeeps the novelty and potential
In a way, Trigger feels like a spiritual sequel to the actor-director duo's previous outing, 100. Very similar to Sathya in the 2019 film, Prabha also ends up in a control room, but this time Atharvaa's role cleanses the filth within the system rather than taking down villains on the outside.
If a case can be made for any sequel, then Trigger could definitely have been the second instalment in the 100 franchise. We could have actually gained insights into the life of a cop who understands the power and importance of the control room. If only. Even though Trigger doesn't have romantic numbers, the film has Tanya Ravichandran playing Atharvaa's romantic interest. The way their equation evolves in Trigger is probably a bigger mystery to solve than the ones in the film. Introduced as strangers-turned-acquaintances, they hardly have conversations about themselves, their friendship, or even their romance.
We are not even sure if they knew when they became couples from being strangers. Except for the comfort they share during a hug and a brief conversation following that, there are no pointers or clues to substantiate the evolution of their relationship. Arun Pandian, in one of his better roles in recent times, looks convincing as a person losing himself to Alzheimer's. But the empathy for his plight would have been more pronounced if we saw more of the equation he used to share with his son before the symptoms kicked in. If only. The convenient writing that ignores logic is the biggest deal breaker of Trigger. The kidnapping network that usually operates with a fool-proof protocol breaks its rules risking its cover to capture a random girl. The imprisoned villain walks in and out of jail like it is his private clubhouse. To top it all, the Alzheimer's condition of Arun Pandian's character is said to be acquired from a blow to his head.
ALSO READ | This film holds you hostage and doesn’t let you blink I liked the portions in Trigger where Atharvaa steps aside and gives the centre stage to Arun Pandian and Chinni Jayanth. Even though their heroic moment didn't quite hit the bulls-eye, they are definitely interesting ideas on paper. Trigger would have been the powerful entertainer it aspires to be if these characters were fleshed out well in a screenplay free of distractions. If only.

123telugu.com Rating : 2.75/5
Starring : Arvind Swamy, Simbu, Vijay Sethupathi, Arun Vijay, Jyothika, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aishwarya Rajesh
Director : Mani Ratnam
Producers : Allirajah Subaskaran
Music Director : A.R. Rahman
Cinematographers : Santosh Sivan
Editors : A. Sreekar Prasad
Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, which has been dubbed in Telugu as Nawab has hit the screens today. Let’s check whether Mani Ratnam’s work impresses us or not.
The film takes off with the murder attempt on Bhupathi Reddy (Prakash Raj), a well-established don in Chennai. In order to find the person behind it, his three sons, Varadha(Arvind Swamy), Thyagu (Arun Vijay) and Rudra (Simbu) attack Chinnappa who is a member of the opposite gang. As time passes by, the brothers come to know a shocking truth about the murder attempt on their dad. Who is that culprit? Why did he attack Bhupathi Reddy? To know this, you have to catch the film in theaters near you.
Plus Points:
Mani Ratnam, who is known for making movies with a huge star cast has once again made a film with all the noted artists. Starting with Prakash Raj, the award-winning actor lives in his role of an aging don. Arvind Swamy fits perfectly into the role of an aggressive and short-tempered person and his thread with Aditi Rao is good. Arun Vijay as the second son is apt in his role as the business-minded guy.
Coming to Simbu, he nailed it as Rudra, the third son. His stylish looks, short and crisp dialogues are an added advantage for the film. Not to forget, Vijay Sethupathi, he is the surprise package and plays a key role with aplomb. His performance is too good and all his innocent dialogues evoke good laughs in the film. Special mention to the person who dubbed for Sethupathi. His voice suited the star hero quite well.
Jyothika gets a respectful role in which she impressed with her natural acting. Senior actress, Jayasudha did justice to her mother’s role. Young starlet Aishwarya Rajesh as Arun Vijay’s wife is good. Aditi Rao Hydari and Dayana Erappa did a decent job in their limited screen presence. The climax twist where the entire suspense drama is unveiled looks top notch.
Minus Points:
Like many of Mani Ratnam’s earlier films, this flick also runs on a slow pace which can be termed as one of the minuses of the film. Though the first half has decent family emotions, the latter half mostly runs on the revenge genre which may not go well with all sections of the audience.
As the basic plotline of the film is serious, there is no scope to insert Mani Ratnam mark romantic scenes which is a big disappointment for his fans. There was a lot of scope to create breathtaking action episodes in this revenge gangster drama but Mani wrapped up things on a simple note without any authentic action blocks.
Technical Aspects:
Music by AR Rahman is a major boost as his engaging background score carries the film’s mood well till the last minute. Cinematography by Santosh Sivan is brilliant as he kept every frame beautiful and natural. Editing by A. Sreekar Prasad is good as he trimmed the proceedings and kept a reasonable runtime. Production values for this Mani Ratnam production are decent. Though Mani Ratnam has established his characters well, his narration lacks the punch in the second half.
On the whole, Nawab is a below average gangster drama which has a few engaging moments. Things look good in the first half but the latter part runs on a flat note until the climax. This film is not for all and will impress staunch Mani Ratnam fans because of the strong characterizations. Cashing in on the craze, this film may work at TN box office but it will have a limited appeal here in Telugu.
