What does a PhD involve?

Over 3 years (or longer if part time), you’ll complete a research project that adds key knowledge to your chosen field. You’ll write up your findings in an 80,000-word thesis.

Throughout your PhD you’ll be guided by a supervisor who’s an expert in their field.

Your research work will be supported by state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure at the School of Physics.

Pathways to a PhD

Our PhD students come to us after undertaking research training either:

  • In a graduate degree – for example the Master of Science (Physics)
  • As part of an undergraduate degree – for example via an honours year in the Bachelor of Science (not available at the University of Melbourne).

We're looking for outstanding students, who have a passion for working on problems at the frontier of physics, and who have developed a strong foundation from advanced graduate-level courses in physics, typically in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical mechanics.

How do I find a supervisor?

To find potential supervisors, browse the research areas in the School of Physics or use Find an Expert to search for keywords.

Before submitting an application, you must have the written support of a supervisor. To obtain this you should contact the supervisor directly or email the School of Physics at [email protected] . In both cases, you should provide the following documents and information:

  • Your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • All higher education transcripts
  • A brief summary of your intended area of research
  • The names of at least two prospective supervisors that align with your intended area of research.

The School will consider your past academic performance and whether there is an academic available to supervise your study.

We offer both the Doctor of Philosophy - Science (PhD) and the Master of Philosophy - Science , but most applicants apply directly for a PhD.

Scholarships and fees

Most domestic and international students who are offered a PhD place with us will also be offered a Graduate Research Scholarship .

Receiving this scholarship means you’ll pay no tuition fees. You’ll also receive a living allowance and relocation grant (if relocating to Melbourne).

When you apply for a PhD with us, you’ll be automatically considered for a Graduate Research Scholarship. There’s no need to apply separately.

Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset)

  • Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.

Research Training Program Scholarship (Stipend and Fee Offset)

  • Living allowance of $37,000 per year pro rata (2024 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
  • Relocation grant of $2,000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3,000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection criteria

All domestic students who are offered admission to a Masters by Research or doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset).

Research Training Program Scholarship provide a stipend as well as fee offset are awarded to domestic and international students based on academic merit. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked according to their academic achievement of their last completed degree and their research potential in their field of study. Factors such as completion of a degree at the same level of the research course for which the scholarship is sought, relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications or composition of original music may be taken into consideration.

Eligibility.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of the People's Republic of China
  • have received an offer for a place in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course at the University of Melbourne. This requires completion of at least a four-year undergraduate degree, with the equivalent of a minimum overall average grade of H2A (or 75%) achieved at the University of Melbourne with a significant research component. Applicants are also required to meet minimum English language requirements .

This scholarship is subject to the  Graduate Research Scholarships Terms & Conditions (as amended).

There is a two-stage application process.

Stage 1: Applying to the University of Melbourne for entry to the PhD.

Submit an online application for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course you wish to apply for by the closing date. Under the Financial Support Requirement of the application, indicate that you have applied for, or plan to apply for, a China Scholarship Council scholarship.

Once you have submitted your PhD application, you will automatically be considered for the Graduate Research Scholarships and the CSC - University of Melbourne PhD Scholarship.

Stage 2: Applying to the CSC for the living allowance scholarship.

If you receive an offer of a PhD place from the University and also an offer of a tuition fee scholarship from the University as part of the China Scholarship Council - University of Melbourne PhD Scholarship, you will need to apply separately to the CSC for the living allowance benefit of the scholarship as follows:

  • Seek approval to submit a scholarship application to the CSC from either your university in China, or from the nearest Consulate of the People's Republic of China if you are currently living outside the Chinese mainland.
  • Apply directly to the CSC for a living allowance scholarship to support you while undertaking the PhD at the University of Melbourne. You should follow the CSC guidelines and apply online for the living allowance scholarship through the Agreements Channel. The CSC application period usually opens around 10 March and closes on 31 March. The University’s PhD place offer and the tuition fee scholarship offer will need to be included with the CSC application. For further information, visit the CSC website.

The University of Melbourne aims to notify applicants of the outcome of their PhD applications within four weeks of receiving the application.

The CSC usually notifies applicants of the outcome of living allowance scholarship applications at the end of May for commencement no later than the 31 December in the following year.

What are the benefits?

The University of Melbourne will provide:

  • a full tuition fee scholarship for a PhD for up to four years

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) will provide:

  • a living allowance of approximately $22,800 per year (2024 rate) including Overseas Student Health Cover
  • a return airfare between China and Melbourne by the most economical route
