Time is Precious Essay

Time is among the very few things that once lost can never be recovered. Think about it: the average life of a person is just a reservoir of 2.4 billion seconds or 75 years in first world nations, where life expectancy is quite high. The situation is worse in third world nations. So, each passing second our reservoir sheds time, just like in an hour glass.

Unfortunately, most people do not realize how precious time is until in later years of their lives. Money lost can be recovered; trust broken can be amended; opportunity lost can be replaced by another opportunity. However, when time is lost it has gone forever. So, what makes time very precious that we have to make the best out of it?

Ever heard the phrase that “time stands still for no man”? Well, it is as clear as that. Time is always in motion. It does not stop for no one, rich or poor, famous or ordinary, Muslim or Christian, man or woman. Each person is given 24 hours a day to either utilize it or waste it away. Time waits for nobody, but it gives us equal duration to follow our dreams or waste them. Since it cannot be contained, we are only gifted with the power of memory to capture all the great moments that made our lives worthwhile.

Secondly, time is priceless. You have probably heard the saying that “the best things in life are for free”. Same goes with time- it is the best gift that life has to offer us. You cannot put a monetary value to time. You cannot redeem it with any form of money or property. If that were the case, then many wealthy men would have traded their billions of dollars to enjoy more time on this lovely earth.

People actually say that “they are buying time” to mean that they are delaying the inevitable. The truth of the matter is that they are wasting their precious resource not doing something that they will end up doing it in the near future and in the process waste more time.

Furthermore, time can never be recreated, once it is gone it is gone. What if time could be recreated? The concept of risk would be nonexistent. After a failure, loss or mistake, people would just remodel their time in a time travel fashion and go back to amend their mistakes. Time would be at a standstill.

There would be chaos with people going back and forth trying to rectify their errors. Most of the brilliant minds in history would not exist simply because their births were considered errors on their parents’ part. Life would, therefore, be worthless and people would waste it just the same way we waste renewable energy. The irony of it all is that we still waste it, despite time being a very scarce resource.

Also, time can never be borrowed or leased to anyone. Just like a thumbprint, it is uniquely yours. We are given time but in different proportions. Some grow past the century mark, while others do not see the light of the day and come out as miscarriages. The duration of life does not matter, however, because we have no control over it. How we live is what that matters, because we have control over our destiny.

It is the quality of life that matters and not the quantity. There are people who died very young, but lived far much better and fulfilling lives than people who grew to their old ages.

Time depreciates in quantity, but appreciates in value as time goes by. As we age, we realize that we are not invincible and death is always around the corner. It becomes crystal clear that time is a great asset that we have wasted away chasing after things that have no importance at all.

The little time we have left, we try to spend it with people we love. Unfortunately, our loved ones are at their productive stages and they also waste away time pursuing things that have little importance to them. It is worth noting that time appreciates in value, as we grow older because we become wise enough to know that it is a scarce resource that can be depleted any time.

However, for some people, time depreciates in value. This is especially true for people who have done crime and have to do time to atone for their crimes. This time is toxic to them and they just want to do away with it so that they can be free and get back to their normal lives. But, this time is not always bad when you factor in people who may be in need of it, such as criminals on death row waiting to be executed.

Another great example is a person who has wasted the quality of his life doing drugs. Eventually, his lifestyle choices will get to him. His life or rather time is depreciating in value with each passing second. This means that the rate at which our time is depleted is twice as fast for drug users. This is the reason why most of them die younger.

Moreover, time flies and it really flies fast while you are thinking of primitive things as doing your essay on time . Firstly, you are in baby diapers, the next minute you are in adult diapers. Some waste it away watching television and fantasizing about movie stars. Others waste it away doing things that are detrimental to their spiritual, economic, physical, emotional and social wellbeing.

Yet others waste their time waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Unbeknownst to them, opportunities rarely come and it is up to us to create them. Opportunities do not come flying through the window. You have to be in the nick of things, doing something meaningful and that is when an opportunity will arise.

Make most of your time and you will be rewarded ten folds of it, waste it and the little you have will be taken away, just like in the parable of talents. People make excuses that they just don’t have time to do something- maybe to visit their friends or loved ones or to go to that vacation that they have been postponing for the last six years or it may be a workout regimen that they told themselves they would pursue.

But, they never seem to have time to do them, as they continuously tell themselves. The truth of the matter is that there is time for everything, how we plan or fail to plan our time is the problem. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This is actually true for time.

There is time for everything. There is time for work, study, eating, sleeping, relaxing, playing, praying, vacations etc. Failure to plan our life makes it seem scarce, when it is actually enough to do whatever we want to do. We have 24 hours in a day, yet there are individuals who are far much busier than us, yet still find the right balance to have a happy life.

The secret is how they plan their lives. They wake up earlier than most of us. Utilize the early morning hours doing something constructive like working out. After work in the evening, they rush to play with their kids, have family dinner and dedicate sometime for their wives. Then, they spend maybe an hour reducing some work log, before hitting the sack. Weekends are strictly for family and friends and each year, they have to go for vacations.

If someone wants to visit or do something for you, they will always find or create time. If they say that they didn’t have time, it means that you are not a priority to them. Why should they waste their time doing stuff for you, when they can use it to watch their favorite television shows?

Eventually, years slip away and we are unable to do whatever we planned to do. We realize how precious our loved were when it is too late. Our concept of time is skewed to the wrong side. We assume there is plenty of it and just procrastinate through it, just like how we do assignments. We do nothing for the most part of it and as the deadline approaches, we are knocked out of our hinges trying to beat them.

That’s the approach that many embrace in life, not knowing that we have only one life to live.  The best approach would be to do heavy tasks while we are young and as we grow older, the intensity and heaviness of the work should be reduced. The reality is that we do less work and more fun while we are young and then try to recover all the wasted time when we age.

The slogan that many youths have adopted is YOLO, which basically stands for You Only Live Once. While you would assume that it is an initiative by our young adults to make the best out of their time, they actually use it as an excuse to waste their lives partying, doing drugs and overindulging in sexual activities.

Do not assume that I’m pro-work with no fun type of a person. Fun is actually the best way to relieve work related stress, but it should be done in moderation. Too much work is bad for our health. The same way too much fun is also bad for us. To have a meaningful and balanced life, time should be planned wisely to accommodate all areas of life, because time wasted can never be recovered.

Essays About Time: Top 5 Examples and 8 Prompts

Essays about time involve looking into human existence and other intangible concepts. Check out our top examples and prompts to write an engaging piece about this subject.

Time entails many concepts that can be hard to explain. In its simplest sense, time is the period between the past, present, and future. It also encompasses every action or progression of events within those measures. Time never stops. It consistently ticks away, making it both a cruel teacher and an apt healer. It inspires many writers to write pieces about it, discussing time as a notion or an element in emotionally-driven compositions that both describe euphoric and heart-rending episodes.

To aid you in writing a compelling piece, below are our top picks for great essays about time:

1. Time is Precious Essay by Anonymous on AreSearchGuide.com

2. an essay on time by david pincus, 3. time is money by supriya, 4. time waster by anonymous on exampleessays.com, 5. time management: using the less time to do more by anonymous on edubirdie.com, 1. how i spend my time, 2. what is time, 3. time and technology, 4. time management and procrastination, 5. if time doesn’t exist, 6. time as a currency, 7. the value of time, 8. time and productivity.

“Make most of your time and you will be rewarded ten folds of it, waste it and the little you have will be taken away, just like in the parable of talents.”

The essay begins with a convincing statement reminding the readers of the average life expectancy of a person to assert the importance of time. Then, in the later sections, the author answers why time is precious. Some reasons include time is always in motion, is priceless, and can never be borrowed. The piece also mentions why many “wait for the right opportunity,” not realizing they must plan first to get to the “right time.” Finally, at the end of the essay, the writer reminds us that balancing and planning how to spend time in all areas of life are critical to having a meaningful existence.

“I don’t know what time is, beyond a mysterious self-similar backdrop upon which we lead our lives. It is intricately woven across the scales of observation – from the quantum level to the phenomenological time of cultural revolutions.”

Pincus begins the essay with questions about time and then proceeds to answer them. Then, he focuses on time psychologically, relating it to traumas, disorders, and lack of meaning. In the next section, he discusses how psychotherapists use the concept of time to treat patients.

In the last part of his essay, Pincus admits that he doesn’t know what time is but notes it’s akin to a thread that stitches moments together and anchors us through a complex world.

“Knowing how precious time is, we should never waste time, but make good use of it.”

Supriya’s essay is straightforward. After claiming that someone’s success depends on how they use their time, she gives an example of a student who studied well and passed an exam quickly. She follows it with more examples, referring to office workers and the famous and wealthy.

“Time is something you can’t have back, and should not be used to simply watch a computer screen for hours upon end.”

The writer shares one of his vices that leads him to waste time – technology, specifically, instant messaging. They mention how unproductive it is to just stare at a computer screen to wait for their friends to go online. They know many others have the same problem and hope to overcome the bad habit soon.

“I should strive for good time management skills which are essential to be learned and mastered in order to have a better personal and professional life… it can also help us learn more about self-discipline which is a crucial pillar for stable success… time management is a concept of balance and moderation of the things that are important to us.”

The essay affirms people need to protect time, as it’s a non-renewable resource. A great way to do it is by tracking your time, also known as time management. The writer shared their experience when they were a college student and how challenging it was to allocate their time between deadlines and other life demands. The following parts of the piece explain what time management is in detail, even recommending a tool to help individuals label their activities based on urgency. The following paragraphs focus on what the author learned about time management throughout their life and how they missed opportunities while continuously being stressed. Then, the last part of the essay suggests tips to conquer time management problems.

8 Writing Prompts For Essays About Time

Go through our recommended prompts on essays about time for writing:

In this essay, share how you use your time on a typical day. Then, decide if you want to keep spending your time doing the same things in the future. If not, tell your readers the reason. For instance, if you’re devoting most of your time studying now, you can say that you intend to use your future time doing other invaluable things, such as working hard to help your family.

Because there are many definitions of time, use this essay to define your interpretation of time. You can use creative writing and personify time to make your essay easy to understand. For example, you can think of time as a personal tutor who always reminds you of the things you should be able to finish within the day. For an engaging essay, use descriptive language to emphasize your points.

Essays About Time: Time and technology

List technologies that help people save time, such as smartphones, computers, and the internet. Delve into how these devices help individuals complete their tasks faster. On the other hand, you can also talk about how modernization negatively affects people’s time management. Like when they distract students and workers from completing their assignments.

Discuss reasons why people procrastinate. First, ensure to pick common causes so your readers can easily relate to your piece. Then, add tips on how individuals can battle dilly-dallying by recommending influential time management theories and models. You can even try some of these theories or models and tell your readers how they worked for you.

Open a discussion about what can happen if there is no concept of time. Include what matters you think will be affected if time is abolished. You can also debate that time does not exist, that it’s just created by people to keep track of whatever they need to monitor. Finally, add your thoughts on the notion that “we only exist within an ever-changing now.”

Share your ideas of what can take place if we use “time” to buy food, pay rent, etc. You can also analyze that when we use our time to work, get paid for it, and then purchase our necessities, we’re technically exchanging our time to be able to buy what we need. A movie that used this theory is In Time , starring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy. You can write a review of this movie and add your opinions on it.

Everyone’s aware of the importance of time. For this prompt, delve into why time is precious. Write this essay from your perspective and probe how time, such as managing or wasting it, affects your life. You can also interpret this prompt by calculating the non-monetary or opportunity costs of spending time.

Examine the direct relationship between time and productivity. Then, list productivity strategies schools and businesses use. You can also open a discourse about the number of hours workers are supposed to work in a week. For example, debate if you think a 40-hour full-time work week in America, results in more productive employees. Then, add other schedules from other countries and how it affects productivity, such as Denmark, Germany, and Norway, with less than 30 hours of the work week.

Essay on Value of Time

Time plays the most important role in life. It is the most wonderful and practical thing. It has no beginning and no end. All things are born on time, grown on time and die on time. You cannot have command on time, nor can you analyze and criticize it. It is very crucial that you understand the value of time and manage it effectively; otherwise, time can create an enormous impact on your life. You need to comprehend and regard the value of time by not wasting it.

Time is the most valuable thing in life. It has no beginning and no end. It can neither be created nor be destroyed. Time is the only dimension in which we all live our lives, and it affects everything that we do, from a flower's growing cycle to the destruction of empires. Time is so important, in fact, that if you did not have any, you could not do anything at all. There are many things that we can do with our time: We can spend it on leisure activities, such as sleeping, watching TV, reading or going for a walk; on work or study; on raising a family; or on helping others. No matter what we choose to do, it is important that we manage our time and make the most of it. Time is a valuable thing when we are in school.

A flower can be planted anytime during the year, but if you want it to grow into a beautiful plant with colourful petals, then you must provide it with enough sunlight, water, and soil. You cannot tell time to wait for your instructions; thus, you must use time in the most efficient way possible to get things done. It is the same with our lives. We have a limited amount of time on this earth, and we need to spend it wisely if we want to accomplish our goals and dreams. There are many ways that we can misuse our time. One of the most common is by procrastinating. Procrastination is the act of putting off action until a later time when it could have been done much more efficiently if you had just done it in the first place.

Time has an Effect Everywhere in Life

Your use of time reflects your priorities. It shows what is important to you. For example, if you are always late for meetings or appointments, then people may assume that you do not value them or their time. However, if you are usually well prepared and arrive early for meetings, then your colleagues will know that they can rely on you to get things done in a timely manner. Time is very much crucial to every person in the world. You have wasted time in the past, so do not get frustrated if you are not able to manage your time perfectly. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and use that knowledge to help you become more efficient with your time in the future!

Time is Valuable

Time management can be defined as "the process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time allocated to the various activities in one's life." It is a skill that can be acquired through training and practice. In order to manage your time effectively, you must know how you spend your time now. Record how much time you spend on each activity during a week, then review what you have recorded. Identify the important tasks and the ones that do not serve any real purpose. Useless activities can be eliminated, and important tasks can be rearranged in a more efficient schedule. The most effective time management techniques include: planning your day the night before, setting priorities, delegating responsibilities, using a planner or calendar, working on one task at a time, utilizing time-saving tools and strategies, and taking short breaks. If we have good habits and good strategies and we follow them, we will get the most out of time. Time management has a great impact on our lives. It can make us more productive every day and help us achieve our goals in life. So take control of your time; do not let it control you! The value of time is something that everyone understands. Time is a precious commodity that we all have an equal amount of, and it is something that should not be wasted. It is interesting to think about how time affects our lives in so many ways. Time is the one thing that we all have in common, but, as a society, we have made very little use of that fact. We have divided up the time that we have into minutes and seconds to the point where time is now our enemy. We are always in a hurry, always chasing after something that we believe will make us happy. And yet, there is nothing that we can do to stop time from passing by.

Importance of Time

Time does not wait for anyone. Whether you like it or not, the fact is time will never stop. It will keep going on. This is an old belief, but it still holds true. Time gives you only one chance, and you have to make the best of it. A moment lost is lost forever. You cannot go back and reverse time.

Time is ever-changing, and change is the law of nature. Nothing is independent of time and change. Life is short, and tasks to accomplish are vast and challenging. We should realize this fact and not waste any minute. Every second and every opportunity should be used efficiently and meaningfully.

Managing Time

Time management has become the most crucial task in today's busy world. It is the art of arranging, organizing, scheduling and budgeting one time for the purpose of generating more effective work and productivity.

Managing time is the effect of the value of time. It is important for everyone, including students, teachers, factory workers, professionals, homemakers and all.

Managing time is not necessarily about getting a lot of things done. Instead, it is about getting the right things, the things that truly need to be done. So it is essential to remain focused and in control of time instead of rushing frantically from one activity to the next until you get exhausted.

Never postpone things for the next day. Today is important. To complete your task today rather than leaving it for tomorrow. Leisure is enjoyable but after fruitful hard work.

Steps to Utilize Time in an Effective Way

Focus on Most Important Tasks First : Calculate how much your time is worth for a particular job. This will help you to prioritize the work and focus on the important task first. Less important tasks can be delegated to others.

Create a Time Audit : You can keep track of the work that you do every week. Then you can make a report to find out which task is stealing more time. This will help you in proper assessment.

Set a Time Limit for Each Task : When you set a time limit for each task, then you will not get distracted and finish your work within the time frame.

Plan Ahead : If you plan well in advance, then you can be more organized and utilize time to complete work efficiently.

Don't Waste Time Waiting: If you have to wait for the completion of a task, then utilize that waiting time in a most effective way. Instead of sitting idle, you can read any book or study material of your interest. This will increase your productivity.

Work Smarter and Not Harder : When you juggle with time, then be smart enough to take up one single task and finish it. Quality is more important than quantity.

Time is a very vital substance in our lives. By realizing the value of time and utilizing it effectively, we will not only achieve our goals to the utmost personal satisfaction but can also contribute to the advancement and development of our society and country. We need to respect time, and by this, we can get the best out of it.

So if people know the value of time, then it is beneficial for society and the individual. The value of time is often underestimated. People think that they have all the time in the world and so they can waste it. But, what people don't realize is that time is a precious commodity that, once wasted, can never be recovered. Time waits for no one, so whatever we want to do, we should do it now and not put it off for later so that we can enjoy it to the fullest. So our advice is that you should utilize your time as effectively as possible and feel content by finishing everything on time.

Value of Time Essay

Time is precious, and we should never waste it. We can recoup our financial outlays but not our lost time. Time becomes more important as a result of this. Therefore, we should utilise our time wisely. Here are a few sample essays on the importance of time.

  • 100 Words Essay on Value of Time

The most valuable resource in a person's life is time, which should never be wasted in any way. One will be more successful if one recognises the value of time. Time is often said to be more important than money . This is said because you can regain the money you spent but cannot regain time. The famous proverb “Time and tide wait for none” is very accurate because time indeed waits for no one, and we must learn how to manage it properly. A person who understands its value completely fulfils every task successfully. For one to be successful in life and achieve their goals, it’s important to learn the value of time and how to manage it.

200 Words Essay on Value of Time

500 words essay on value of time.

Value of Time Essay

You cannot purchase back time once it has passed, making time an invaluable resource. One needs to start learning how to use time effectively to achieve their goals. Time is an excellent teacher since it never stops and does not wait for anyone. Every person's life is greatly influenced by the passage of time, whether it be through daily activities like rising from bed, cleaning one's teeth, taking a shower, eating meals on schedule, or making plans for significant life events.

People frequently place greater importance on other things in their lives than time. The most valuable resource in life is time, not money. If you don't have enough time to enjoy your wealth, no amount of money you make will be worth anything. You cannot see or catch time, but you must move with it because it is constantly moving. Time is like air. Without anyone recognising it, it is like a wave that endlessly flows. The ones that are successful in life are those who are aware of this ever-flowing wave and who create effective routines to use their time well. And those who fail do so regretfully, always wishing they could go back.

One of the most priceless possessions a person is born with is time. Time never turns around and always continues in one direction. Time won't value you if you don't appreciate it. Time is a crucial component of success when discussing its progression. Our time has the power to ruin us if we waste it. Time is beautiful because it is with time how things develop, mature, and then die. It bears witness to a vast array of memories and choices, both good and negative. Since no one controls time, it is crucial to appreciate its significance.

For example, if you place a frog in a pot of boiling water, the frog begins to adjust to the temperature of the water. As the temperature gradually rises, the frog adjusts its body temperature accordingly. It does not understand when to jump out of the pot and thus continues to adapt. It eventually succumbs to the heat and perishes in the boiling water. The moral of the story is that we must recognise which decisions we must make before time runs out. Maintaining patience in certain situations and using your mind to solve them is critical. Panicking will only waste your time and resources.

Time is the agent of change, claimed to be a law of nature. Everything we do in life, including growing up, finishing school, earning a degree, and landing a job, depends on how we manage our time. Because of this, it's crucial to teach kids time management skills at a young age. Daily activities must be done on time, including eating, sleeping, exercising, and completing assignments. This ensures no room for procrastination and that time is used effectively.

Once you realise that one of the world's most vital elements is time, you have already overcome a challenge. It can create or shatter someone's life, career, and interpersonal connections. We humans may never fully understand the magnificence of time since it may only take a few months for some people to win while it may take years or even decades for others. It is undoubtedly a rare occurrence of nature to have everything suddenly taken away from you. We merely need to assess the best moment to seize life's opportunities.

In every aspect of life, it's essential to be on time. Being on time means you control your schedule and don't let the time dictate how you spend your time. Planning is crucial in managing time; once you have created a realistic plan that you know you can follow, just push yourself to finish within the allotted time.

4 Reasons Time is Precious – Jonathan Edwards

What is the most valuable resource in the universe? Jonathan Edwards would answer that question with, “time.”

Time is the most precious resource in the universe.

Dated December of 1734, Puritan pastor Jonathan Edwards’s, short essay The Preciousness of Time and The Importance of Redeeming It from Ephesians 5:16 is one of the most convicting things you may ever read. This short work was very formative for me. It helped develop my convictions on the worth of every moment of my time. It also helped me see that it is, in fact, not my time at all. Time doesn’t belong to us. We are merely stewards of the Lord’s time, and there is much to do in a short amount we’ve been entrusted with.

From that essay, here are Edwards’s four reasons why time is precious.

1. Time is Precious Because Eternity Depends on It

Edward’s first reason that time is precious is “because a happy or miserable eternity depends on the good or ill improvement of it.”

Time is precious because eternity hinges on how we spend it.

He argues that people put the highest value on the things which are most concerning to their interests. He illustrates this using money. “Gold and silver are esteemed precious by men; but they are of no worth to any man, only as thereby he has an opportunity of avoiding or removing some evil, or of possessing himself of some good.” Thus, how much more precious is time than money. “Hence it is that time is so exceedingly precious, because by it we have opportunity of escaping everlasting misery, and of obtaining everlasting blessedness and glory.”

Productivity, of course, has a lot to do with time—saving time, using time wisely, and not wasting time—but secular productivity gurus cannot answer the ultimate question of what you  should give time to and why . They don’t care if your interest in productivity is to make more money or be a better student. But Christian productivity concerns itself not just with the how of productivity but the what and the why.

So here we have Jonathan Edwards offering us some truly Christian productivity advice. Time isn’t just precious because “time is money,” time is precious because eternity hinges on how we spend it. If we do not cling to Christ in faith for the forgiveness of our sins and imputation of His righteousness before the final sand falls from our hourglass, we are lost forever. And if, as Christians, we do not maximize the hours we are given for God’s glory, we forfeit opportunities to honor our savior and obtain heavenly reward in accordance with our labors.

2. Time is Precious Because it is Very Short

In macroeconomics what is it that drives prices in the market? Supply and demand. Those resources which are a plentiful drop in price, while those which are scarce are deemed more valuable. So, it is with the scarcest commodity of all, time. James writes of life’s brevity, calling the whole sum of our time on this planet “a vapor” (James 4:14). Similarly, Edwards writes, “Time is so short, and the work which we have to do in it is so great, that we have none of it to spare. The work which we have to do to prepare for eternity, must be done in time, or it never can be done.”

time is precious, jonathan edwards

Herein is another principle that guides how the productive Christian lives his life. The scarcest resource, time, requires the most considered care in how we invest it. Again, Christian productivity is not merely about tips and tricks to do things faster or more efficiently. Our concern must be greater than that. The productive Christian takes great pains to ensure that he is investing his brief life in matters of eternal import.

3. Time is Precious Because We Do Not Know How Much We Have

We know that our lives are brief, but no one knows how brief his life will be.

Edwards on quote on the preciousness of time.

This point is slightly different from the previous one. “We know that [time] is very short, but we know not how short.” Edwards explains of time, “We know not how little of it remains, whether a year, or several years, or only a month, a week, or a day. We are every day uncertain whether that day will not be the last, or whether we are to have the whole day.”

His point is that the clock is ticking but we do not know when the alarm will sound. Today could be your last day, this second could be your last second.

This is why the advice to live every day as if it were your last has stood the test of time. It is profoundly true. We just don’t know how long we have. To the person who doesn’t know God, this is a terrifying thing to consider. Perhaps that is why so many fill their lives with a never-ending stream of information an entertainment, they hope all that noise will drown out the terrible thought that they will someday die.

But for the Christian knowing our time is short—and even that we don’t know how short it is—doesn’t mean we should live in a constant state of dread. We know where we are going when we die. For us, it simply means that there is no time to waste. We must live and serve our Lord and our fellow man with all energy and eagerness. We must be productive with the time we know we have because the only time we know for certain we have is right now. Procrastination has no place in the life of a person who knows his time may be almost up.

4. Time is Precious Because Once It’s Gone It’s Gone

Lastly, time is precious because it is a one-time-use commodity, or as Edwards put it, “time is very precious because when it is past, it cannot be recovered.” Edwards explains that money and possessions can be lost and recovered again. A man can lose his entire fortune, yet in the course of only a few years make back what he has lost. Not so with time. When time is gone, it is truly gone. Yet, how often do we, in laziness, watch our days and hours circling the drain of worthless pursuits?

The expression, “our days are numbered” is biblical. God has given us an allotted number of moments. Psalm 139:16 says, “In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” But once each one of those days is spent, it is spent forever. Edwards emphasizes this sobering reality by calling us to look back on the years wasted. “If we have lived fifty, or sixty, or seventy years, and have not improved our time, now it cannot be helped. It is eternally gone from us. All that we can do, is to improve the little that remains.”

We are tempted to run from this type of thinking, but that is exactly what we must not do. We cannot hide from the deep thoughts of our own mortality by clinging to shiny distractions. For the sake of eternity and the glory of our Master, we must face the truth of our temporality head-on. Edwards made a commitment in the fifth of his famous 70 resolutions. “Resolved, never to lose one moment of time; but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can.” We would be wise to take a similar pledge. And in light of it to take appropriate action, like scheduling our days .

There is no time to waste. Let us rise to the occasion and determine today that from this moment forward we will employ our time—rather, God’s time—productively for His glory. May we never look back on our lives and see that we have wasted the most precious commodity we have been given, time.

And if you are not a Christian, I urge you to hasten and not delay a moment longer. Run to Jesus Christ. Repent of your sin, repent of how you have spent God’s time in seeking self-pleasure and worthless pursuits of sinful disobedience to him. And trust wholly in Jesus, in His perfect life, His sacrificial death, and His victorious resurrection. Because God has put Him forth as the answer for sinful people like us. It is through Jesus alone that you can be reconciled to God and adopted as His son or daughter. And as a child of the King of Kings, you will receive an inheritance of eternal value and an eternity of time.

So, run to Jesus, while there’s still time.

This article has only presented the tip of the iceberg of Jonathan Edwards’s great work. I encourage you to read the whole thing, it’s not long. Here’s a free PDF version of Jonathan Edwards’s The Preciousness of Time and the Importance of Redeeming It

Thank you for this GREAT summary! I will be using it in my high school Health Class to talk about the importance of TIME MANAGEMENT (WISE use of time, not WASTING time) this week! Blessings, brother!

Thanks for the comment, Michelle! Praying for you and the students in your Health Class this morning.

Thank you for the summary brother, I shall seek to employ my time well, this article was very helpful.

This is so true.

Beautiful sermons. I’ve touch my heart ????

We serve a great God who does far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or understand. (Ephesians 3v21) I have recently been looking to improve my time spent for God, and He providentially provided this course through you. I look forward to learning more, and serving Him better through what is learned here. Thank you so much, I have learned alot already, and pray that through Christ I may be a doer of the word.

Dr. Lawson once taught a sermon on this same resolution during the Resolved Conference (2012?). He used the example of his father frugal spending, “… and there is no one who can work a dollar like my dad…” Dr. Lawson noted going into a store and there would be special sales announced that would only be available for a short period of time (blue light specials). We only have certain seasons of time to do things for God. Some, are mere moments. We can act, or lose that chance forever. Redeem the time my friends.

amazing information. I will start working in applying a better time management in my life for the Lord

250 Words Essay on Importance of Time

Introduction.

Time is an invaluable asset that is often overlooked in our fast-paced modern world. Its importance cannot be overstated as it is the very fabric of our existence, shaping our lives and experiences.

Time: The Great Equalizer

Time is the great equalizer, it does not discriminate. Regardless of wealth, status, or power, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. This stark reality underscores the importance of time management, as it is the key to maximizing productivity and achieving goals.

Time and Opportunities

Time is closely linked with opportunities. It is often said that ‘time and tide wait for no man’. Opportunities are fleeting, and it is only by managing our time effectively that we can seize them. Missed opportunities are often a result of poor time management, leading to regret.

The Temporal Nature of Life

Life is temporal, and time is the measure of our existence. Our actions, experiences, and memories are all bound by the passage of time. This fleeting nature of life makes time incredibly precious, emphasizing the need for us to value and utilize it wisely.

In conclusion, time is a fundamental aspect of our lives that dictates our actions, experiences, and ultimately, our success. Its importance is reflected in the old adage, “Time is gold.” By managing our time effectively, we can make the most of our opportunities, achieve our goals, and lead a fulfilling life.

500 Words Essay on Importance of Time

The concept of time.

Time, an abstract and intangible concept, is a fundamental element of our existence. It is a continuous, irreversible flow that shapes our lives, societies, and the universe. Time’s importance is often underestimated, yet it is a resource that, once lost, cannot be recovered. The understanding and utilization of time are crucial, especially in today’s fast-paced world.

Time: An Irrecoverable Asset

One of the primary reasons time holds such significance is its irrevocable nature. Unlike other resources, time cannot be stored, saved, or recycled. Every moment that passes is a moment gone forever. This realization underscores the importance of using time wisely. Efficient time management can lead to increased productivity, reduced stress, and improved quality of life.

The Role of Time in Education

For college students, time management is a critical skill. It is a period of life where responsibilities increase, deadlines loom, and the balance between academic, personal, and social life becomes a challenge. Effective time management can help students meet their academic goals while also allowing for personal growth and social interaction.

Time and Success

Time also plays a significant role in achieving success. It is often said that ‘time is money,’ and in many ways, this is true. Businesses operate based on timelines, and delays can lead to financial losses. On a personal level, using time effectively can lead to career advancement, personal development, and fulfillment of goals.

Time in the Context of Relationships

Time also plays a pivotal role in relationships. It allows for the creation of shared experiences, the building of trust, and the deepening of emotional bonds. The investment of time in relationships often equates to the value placed on them, highlighting its importance in this domain.

Time and the Universe

On a grander scale, time is the fabric of the universe. It is a dimension, much like space, that allows for the existence and progression of life. Without time, there would be no change, no evolution, and no existence as we know it.

In conclusion, time is a precious commodity that permeates every aspect of our lives. It is a non-renewable resource that, when used wisely, can lead to personal and professional success, meaningful relationships, and a deeper understanding of the universe. Understanding and respecting time’s importance is a critical step towards leading a fulfilling and balanced life.

Time plays a significant role in our lives. We should utilise every single moment till the end of our life. In this world, time is of supreme power. It depends upon us how to use it. Using time wisely will make our lives happier and full of prosperity and joy. However, if we misuse it, there is a chance that we may lose everything and ruin our life. The lesson learnt is that we must never take time for granted and should understand its value. In this Essay on Time, we will cover topics like the importance of time and how to manage it effectively. After going through this essay, students can also practise essays on similar topics such as Time Management Essay, The Importance of Time Essay, the Value of Time Essay, etc.

There is a famous quote on time which helps us better understand the value of time. It says that “If you want to know the value of one year, ask a student who failed a course. If you want to know the value of one minute, ask the person who just missed the bus and if you want to know the value of one-hundredth of a second, ask the athlete who won a silver medal in the Olympics.”

Importance and Value of Time

Time never waits for anyone, and no one can stop or reverse time. We are aware that neither can anyone speed up time nor can anyone slow it down. Time moves at its own pace. Every second, the minutes and hours that are moving forward will not come back. So, we should not do anything wrong in the present which we have to regret in the future. The mistakes we make cannot be corrected at times because we can never go back to that time. We must engage ourselves in practising good things. Interestingly, time is also regarded as the best medicine as it can heal wounds and pain, whether physical or internal feelings.

Nowadays, we waste so much of our time on social networking sites. These apps consume so much of our time that we do not even realise what we are missing out on. Instead of merely passing our time, we must utilise these apps to learn new things. Also, we must put a restriction on the daily use of these apps. It should not exceed more than 30 minutes or a maximum of 1 hour. Otherwise, we sometimes need to uninstall these applications and reflect on the time we wasted.

How to Manage Time Efficiently

Time flies by very fast. We don’t even realize that we were once small kids, and now we have turned into teenagers and soon will turn into adults. That’s why it is said that we should enjoy our present. If we work on making our present better, then our future will automatically be secure. Thus, time management plays a vital role and is practised by the most successful people worldwide.

Here are a few tips that can help with time management:

  • Wake up early in the morning. It makes your day longer.
  • Start each day by compiling a to-do list.
  • Prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency.
  • Keep track of time spent on different tasks.
  • Organize yourself.
  • Remove non-essential tasks/activities.
  • Plan ahead and make sure you start each day with a clear idea of what needs to be done on that day.

In conclusion, time is one of the most precious things we have. We must respect time and value it to do wonders in our life. If we haven’t realized the importance of time until now, then it’s not too late. The best time to do this is in the present, wherein we can build a rocking future.

  • It helps them in being disciplined to achieve whatever they want.

The value of time is not learned by reading books. One can only understand it by practising good habits to lead a disciplined life. Here is a value of time essay in English in 100 words.

We have all heard our elders saying that time waits for none; stop procrastinating and do your assigned job within the given time frame. Everyone emphasises the value of time, so you understand how much it matters. Time slips away from your hand like sand; you cannot hold it forever. It flies by. Time is finite but also infinite. Time is the most treasured thing in our lives that makes us disciplined and helps us lead a good life. Wastage of time can hamper our growth and success. We must use our time efficiently to excel in life.

Only if kids realise the importance of time, will they be able to achieve whatever they want in life. Reaching great heights requires lots of dedication and focus, which comes from proper time management. Let us go through a short essay on the importance of time for kids.

Time can be defined as the continuous happening of events. It is a very precious and limited entity. It can make our life boon or bane, depending on how we spend our time. Our failure and success largely depend on how much importance we give to our time. Proper time management can help us lead a happy and productive life. Time limits and deadlines make us work more efficiently towards the goal. The day we understand the nuances of time management can be a turning point in our lives. It is a pathway to success and prosperity.

Nothing comes easy in life. You always have to struggle a bit to achieve something. But if you are focused on achieving a goal, it is a cakewalk. This should be taught to our kids from an early stage. Here is an essay for students of class 3 in 500 words that can make them understand the value of time.

Time is like water; it always flows at a certain speed. It slows down; it paces up sometimes, depending on how we feel. But the truth is that time moves at a constant speed. Time can be designed as an indefinite process of events and occurrences. It is largely divided into past, present, and future. Past is something that has already happened, the present is something that happens in the current moment, and the future is something that can happen anytime in the near-far future. You cannot catch hold of the time; you cannot go back and forth in time.

What Is The Importance Of Time?

The importance of time is unparalleled. It cannot be explained in mere words. You only realise its importance once it is gone. And we still have not been able to invent the time machine that takes us back in the past and rectifies our mistakes and carelessness towards time. So, it is important to note that each day, hour, minute, and second passing is taking us close to our goal, and no second should be wasted. Time cannot be reversed; each moment should be spent wisely to maximise the benefit from it.

What Will Happen If We Don’t Value Time?

There are lots of distractions around us nowadays. While technology has benefited us, it also has a lot of things on the list of distractions. Internet, social media, video games, and many more have become a cause of time wastage for kids and adults. If we do not spend our time judiciously, it can hamper our dedication and focus toward our goals and success. One should be very time efficient while making a proper itinerary towards your goal.

How To Utilise Time In An Effective Way?

There are many ways by which you can utilise your time efficiently. Listed below are a few points to help you become more time conscious and time-efficient.

1. “Early to bed and early to rise…”

“…makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.” This quote by Benjamin Franklin can prove to be very beneficial for better time management skills. A person who sleeps better has efficient working skills and ethics.

2. Make a To-Do list

By making a to-do list every day, you can easily organise your day to complete various tasks efficiently. It also gives you a sense of contentment and achievement if you manage to tick all the items off your list.

3. Prioritise

It is important to prioritise tasks that are important to achieve. You can give priority numbers to tasks on your to-do list.

4. Organisation

Better organisation of your things and day can help you long for more. An organised person stresses out less and sleeps better.

5. Delegation

If a job does not require much of your attention, you can delegate it to someone else who is eager for some work. It can unburden you with unnecessary tasks.

6. Planning

Planning ahead of time can always prove to be helpful. It gives you a clear idea of how everything will pan out.

7. No Wasting of time

Be certain to indulge yourself in activities that are fruitful for you. Do not get involved in any distractions. It may feel good for a minute or two, but it will do more harm in the future.

Children will learn to value time. It will make them realise how important it is. It can help them achieve whatever they want if they manage their time properly. Once they realise the benefits of time management, it will not take much time for them to become a disciplined person. They will get an idea about what kind of distractions video games and mobile phones can be. Their prolonged usage can harm their focus and health.

Time is a precious quantity for everyone. If we respect our time, others will also respect it. There are many ways to waste our precious time, but it takes a little time to build ourselves into a focused person, which benefits us for life. If you are someone who has not realised its importance, it is never too late!

They toiled hard all day long and accomplished all their tasks with dedication. They also made it a point to sleep on time. They focused on their work and managed their time efficiently. However, in today’s time, with so many distractions around, it has become difficult for people to maintain focus and accomplish their tasks timely. Even though people know that time is valuable, they are unable to manage it properly as they remain distracted by mobile phones, tabs, television and other sources of entertainment.

Wasting Time: The Worst You Can Do to Yourself

It is essential to understand the value of time. Wasting time is the worst thing one can do to himself/ herself. Time must always be used in a constructive way. Realize  the Importance of Time

It is time we all should recognize the importance of time. We must use it for our good as well as the good of those around us in order to build a better society. Parents must spend quality time with their children to build a strong bond with them. They must also teach the importance of time to their children and help them manage their time efficiently. A nation where each individual utilizes his time efficiently and leads a disciplined life is likely to grow at a greater speed compared to a country where people wile away their time uselessly.

Make the Most of the Time

We must utilize our time wisely to make the most of it. It is best to prepare a schedule each morning and work according to it in order to make the most of the time we have. This is not only useful for students and working professionals but also for housewives and other people. There are numerous tasks that every person needs to handle in a day. In order to complete all the tasks in a timely manner, it is always good to schedule them properly. Now, this is not means that we must spend all our time working. If we do that then our productivity is likely to decline. We must thus squeeze in some time during the day for recreation as well. We must also ensure that we take adequate sleep as it is very important for working efficiently for the rest of the day.

It is rightly said, “The greatest gift you can give someone is your time, because when you give your time you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back”. We must all recognize the importance of time and spend it in the right manner to do well in our life.

Long Essay on Time Management – Essay 5 (600 words)

Time Management is an art that not everyone possesses. It requires a good amount of effort to learn and put this art into practice. Only a person who recognizes the value of time can understand the need to manage it efficiently. However, even as many people recognize the importance of time sooner or later they aren’t able to manage their time properly. One of the main reasons for this is the numerous sources of entertainment available these days. With the growing use of mobile phones, internet connection and social media platforms, staying focused and managing time efficiently has become a big challenge.

Ways to Manage Time Efficiently

Here are a few ways that can help you manage your time efficiently:

Set small term as well as long term goals. These goals will serve as a driving force for you. This will give you the zeal to work hard with dedication and utilize all the time you have to achieve the goals. It is a good idea to reward oneself at every achievement to achieve the next milestone with all the more dedication and conviction. This helps in staying motivated.

  • Prioritize Tasks

It is extremely important to prioritize your tasks in order to manage your time efficiently. The important tasks must be accomplished first and then you should move on to the less important ones. It is suggested to club similar tasks and complete them in one go as this speed up the work. It is also a good idea to complete the easier tasks first so that the beginning is smooth and you stay motivated to accomplish more.

  • Prepare To Do Lists

It is always good to prepare a daily to-do list at the beginning of each day. This is yet another way to speed up the work. This will help you figure out all that you require working on during the day and thus you can manage your time accordingly. This way you will not even waste time thinking about what to do next after completing each task. It also gives you a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day and thus acts as a good motivation factor.

  • Learn to Say No

Many people are not able to say no to the other people when asked for help. Even when they have their own work pending, they go out of their way to help the other person. This hampers their work. It is important to know what your priority is and treat it like that. Always remember, you can truly do good to other people when you are content with your life.

  • Take Adequate Sleep

It is essential to take adequate sleep to make the most of the rest of the time you have. If you toil hard until late night and again wake up early in an attempt to spend more hours working, you will not be doing any good. This will decrease your productivity rather than giving you more time to work. You must make it a practice to sleep for 7-8 hours a night in order to manage your time efficiently.

  • Eat Healthy and Exercise Daily

It is also important to eat a healthy diet and take out at least an hour each day to exercise. This helps in keeping one fit and energetic. Only a person who is fit and active can manage his time efficiently. Having junk food and leading a sedentary life will make you lethargic and you will not be able to manage your time efficiently.

Thus, taking care of small details in our daily routine can help in managing our time efficiently. It will take some effort initially however soon it will become a way of life.

500-word essay on the Importance of Time

Time is one of the most precious things in life that a human is born with. Time only moves in one direction always and does not come back. If you don’t value time, time also won’t value you. When talking about success, time is an important stepping stone towards it. If we waste our time, it also had the ability to destroy us. Time is a wonderful things that watches things born, grow, and then die and decay. It is the testimony to a plethora of memories and decisions, the good ones and the bad. No one has command over time which is why it is so important to understand its value.

For example, if you put a frog in a pot of water and start boiling it, the frog starts to adjust according to the temperature of the water. As the temperature slowly rises, the frog keeps adjusting its body temperature according to it. It cannot comprehend the right time to jump out of the pot and hence continues to adjust. Eventually, it cannot handle the temperature and dies in the boiling water. The moral of the story is that we need to recognize what decisions we should make before we run out of time. We humans may never fully comprehend the greatness of time as for some it may take a couple of months to bag a win whereas for some it could take years or even decades. It is indeed a very unique phenomenon of nature that could give you everything and take it away, both in just a moment. Life presents us with lots of opportunities, we just need to analyze the right time and conquer them.

We get 86400 seconds a day, which is 1440 minutes. Think of it as money and our life is the bank account. If you spend every day being lazy and doing nothing, you’re wasting all of this money. Every moment can be an opportunity, you should just know how to seize it. Rather than wasting it, we should use it to our advantage and schedule all of our work properly, allowing time to work and relax. One can also learn a new skill in their free time. It’s all about the way of utilizing the time that best suits your needs and routines.

Essay On Time is Precious

  • Post category: Essay
  • Reading time: 4 mins read

Time it is said is the only real possession a man has. Every person has a certain limited time to spend on the earth. Every minute that he or she lives takes away from his/her amount of time allotted for him/her to live.

It is time that rules every thing that happens on the earth, the solar system, in fact the whole universe, Everything is born or started in time and dies or ends in time. Every hour lived in list forever. Time cannot be recycled or relived.

It is said among elders who work and earn money, that time is money. In fact time is much more precious than money. No amount of money can buy time or make up or call back lost time. Time is every changing. Change is the law of nature. Man’s life is very short and each man has a lot to do on earth.

Since time waits for no one, we should do everything in a well planned manner. In everything due care has to be taken to see that no time is wasted. Great men and women used their time most profitably and economically. Of them it can be said that their time was well spent. We too must make constant efforts to have great respect for time and use it meaningfully doing constructive works and living fully.

Time Is Precious Essay Example

  • Type: Essay

Friends, today I am going to speak on a subject that affects us all, every day, every hour, every minute and every second. Yes…the subject is Time. Time is the most precious thing for a man as it comes only once in someone's life and never stays long. Our life is like a bubble, a short morning dream. Therefore, we should take good care and make the best use of it. In other words, we must understand the value of time. Time management is basically planning and dividing one's time in a constructive way. We all have a number of activities that have to be taken care of in a particular period of time. So we should be able to plan our activities in such a way that we are able to complete al

l the work in a given span of time.

A great philosopher wisely said, “Time is short, not for rest, think your aim and do your best". If we were to take care of our minutes then the 'hours' and 'days'' will take care of themselves. It is said that 'Time is more precious than money'. This is because money lost in business or otherwise, can be gained or earned again. But time once lost, can never come back. To illustrate my point, I would like to make a few comparisons: - To known the value of one year, ask the student who failed. - To know the value of one month, ask the mother of a premature baby. - To know the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly. - To know the value of

one day, ask the daily wage worker.

- To know the value of one minute, ask the passenger who missed the train. - To know the value of one second, ask the person who escaped an accident. We all grow in time, live in time and ultimately, perish in time. There may not be an exact definition of time, but we all know what it is and its great value in a person's life. A man has a lot of wants. We want fame, success, money, happiness, love, etc. There is no end to our desires. However, only a few are successful, prosperous and happy. These few are the ones who realized the value of time. They made the best use of their time and attained an enviable position in the society.

People, who made effective usage of time at their disposal, got the best from time. But those who forgot the value of time found to their utter dismay that it was harsh on them later. In other words, successful persons use time in the best possible manner to achieve their goals. Most of us waste our precious time in unnecessary things such as gossip, roaming-aimlessly, grieving over the past blunders or day dreaming. It must always be kept in mind that, “Time and tide wait for none”. Time can be spent wisely or foolishly. The choice is ours and so are its consequences. Life is not a bed of roses. Each one of us has to face a number of problems in life.

We have to be bold and courageous enough to face them. Problems are faced by men of

courage only. Escapists always avoid problems. Bad times teach us a lot. They prepare us for a prosperous and glorious future. When difficult times arrive, they prepare us for a better life. We will then be able to handle problems with more maturity, stability and courage. Basically, time and opportunity once lost can never be recovered. The flow of time is ceaseless and eternal and we all are like small insignificant particles in this endless and continuous flow. Time is eternal and endless but human life is very limited, finite and short-lived.

Hence, successful people make the best use of time in their lives. A work done is time earned. A decision taken at an appropriate moment can work wonders so we must all learn to strike the iron when it is hot. We must make the best us of good times. We must make arrangements for the bad times during the good times. When bad times knock at our doorstep, we should face them bravely with perseverance. That is how a rational and strong man is supposed to fight his battles of life. Ultimately a seasoned and an experienced human being would be able to master time with his resources, skills and careful planning. A proper use of time means the right use of an opportunity.

As a very popular saying goes - 'A stitch in time saves nine'. As opportunities in life are few and far between, so is time precious and limited. Those of us who miss an opportunity or waste time, have to repent all our life. This implies that we must be punctual, disciplined and regular in our

work-schedule. One should inculcate the habit of early rising as one can complete a number of takes before the day has even started. For this, once must never be plagued with lethargy and bad habits. Some of them sleep late at night, laziness, remaining glued to the television or addicted to drugs. etc.

So take the following steps to manage time: 1. Keep a time record. Fix time for each activity and see that the work is completed within the time frame. 2. Short term goals: Set the goal for each day, week or a month, so that you can make sure that the time is spent in a systematic manner. 3. Planning - Plan and use your time in such a way that you have a clear idea of what you want to do with the day, make out a definite program, know what you like doing with your leisure. 4. Interruptions - Don't' allow any one to disturb you when you are doing an important work. 5. Relaxation - Relaxation is also important, so do spare for it. 6. Doing it right the first time

To conclude, it is foolishness to think that we can make up for the lost time There is a popular saying that 'the past is dead and the future is unborn'. There are no tomorrows and yesterdays. It is 'today' which is important. Time is very powerful. It has more power than the mightiest of monarchs, for they come and go, but time remains forever, without an end or a beginning. So, we must ensure that we make the best use of time in our limited

span of life. All great men are the great economizers of time. They have left their foot prints on the sands of time… we should try to follow them and learn to make the best use of time.

A Poet on Taylor Swift’s Complicated Embrace of Tortured Poets

essay time is precious

W ho was the first tortured poet? Maybe the ancient Egyptian who wrote, sometime in the 15th century BCE, "My beloved stirs my heart with his voice. He causes illness to seize me.... My heart is smitten." Maybe the poet Catullus, whose heartbreaks lit up ancient Rome: "I hate and love," he explained in Latin, "and it's excruciating," or (depending on the translator) "it crucifies me." Petrarch's sonnets, in 14th century Italy, complained that love both scorched and chilled. Mary Wroth, a contemporary of Shakespeare, agreed: love made her "burn and yet freeze: better in hell to be."

All those poets felt tortured by erotic love—and their strife sometimes hurt other people, too, if they came too close. The trope of the tortured poet whose gifts would destroy him (or, less often, her) came about later, when European writers began to see poets as especially sensitive, anguished, or fragile. "We poets in our youth begin in gladness," William Wordsworth mused in 1802, "But thereof in the end come despondency and madness." That second line lengthens as if unfolding hard truth. A genuine poet in France might be a "poète maudit" ("cursed poet"), like Charles Baudelaire or Arthur Rimbaud, marked by fate, mental illness, or alcohol addiction. By the 20th century the type (or stereotype, really) could fit all manner of wild and self-destructive creators, especially men, from Dylan Thomas to the Doors' Jim Morrison.

By calling her new album The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift points back to this tradition. She also makes fun of it, comments on it, and rejects it, as the prose that accompanied the album implies. "There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed," Swift wrote in an Instagram post. "Our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it."

Seeing her work as ink on a page, not only as song in the air, Swift claims herself as a literary writer—the modern age’s most notorious poet. Fans first speculated that she appropriated the "tortured" mantle from the group chat co-run by her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, which Alwyn called "The Tortured Man Club.” Could be—but it’s so much more than that, and it might also point to other recent relationships . Taylor creates some distance between herself and the stereotype she invokes. "You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith," Swift's title track declares. "This ain't the Chelsea Hotel. We're modern idiots." He's not that gifted, and she's not that dramatic. Or rather she's dramatic in a different, far more deliberate way: one that fits her own, always thoughtful, but rarely raw, art.

Swift also takes back for herself—and for other women artists—the power that supposedly comes from chronic distress, from feeling like a tortured mess. "You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me," Swift warns on "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" If she feels tortured and reacts with poetry, that's not endemic to poets; it's the logical consequence of a romance gone wrong and a live lived in public. "I was tame, I was gentle till the circus life made me mean,” she sings. “You caged me and then you called me crazy/ I am what I am 'cause you trained me.”

But if Swift has become the chair of the Tortured Poets Department, she didn't get there by being born this way: the rest of the department did it to her. Her barbed words, sharp hooks, and sarcastic replies are more like Wroth's burning and freezing than they are like Baudelaire's doom. They share, and make fun, of her own emotional extremes. "Whether I'm gonna be your wife or gonna smash up your bike I don't know yet," she explains on “imgunnagetyouback,” punningly. "But I'm gonna get you back”—either get you to come back to me, or get back at you. Her phrases present a feminist revenge, turning her pain into (what else?) song. "I cry a lot but I am so productive it's an art," she croons on one of the most upbeat new tracks “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” "You know you're good when you can even do it with a broken heart."

Like all Swift's albums, The Tortured Poet Department contains multitudes and multiple takes on the same situation, just as it contain several pop styles, from the 1980s-style synths in the album’s single “Fortnight,” composed with Post Malone, to the acoustic guitar and string sweeps of "The Albatross," created with reference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Wordsworth's ex-friend, a self-sabotaging poet for the ages). In "But Daddy I Love Him" Swift strikes back, with extra reverb, at fans who insist on telling her who to date and how. In "Down Bad" she encapsulates her toughest, most immature moments in elegant half-rhyme: "everything comes out teenage petulance. I might just die, it would make no difference." But Swift for most of the album, for all her passion and all her pain, knows better than to blow up her life for love. Like her character in "The Bolter," she knows how to save herself, even when love feels like drowning.

The tortured modern poet—the poète maudit—the trope that Swift's new album takes up and plays with and against, remains a powerful metaphor (she is no authority on literal torture, and never pretends to be one). Listeners who have been sorting through The Tortured Poets Department since both halves of it dropped, two hours apart, have already found our own favorites, mirrors for our own falls through thin ice.

It's surprising, even staggering, to see the range of her responses to love, to poetry, and to "torture." Sometimes she magnifies, even celebrates, her own and her characters' emotional turmoil. Other times (as in the title track) she makes fun of the way they, as would-be "tortured poets," cannot get out of their own heads. And sometimes—to quote another poet, William Butler Yeats—she mocks mockers after that, telling us to stop telling her what to do.

Always, though, she shows us the craft she shares with the great poets, and songwriters, of times past: the ability, as Yeats also put it, "to articulate sweet sounds together," and to "work harder than all these"—harder than anybody—at turning all those feelings into art.

What Sentencing Could Look Like if Trump Is Found Guilty

A black-and-white photo of Donald Trump, standing behind a metal barricade.

By Norman L. Eisen

Mr. Eisen is the author of “Trying Trump: A Guide to His First Election Interference Criminal Trial.”

For all the attention to and debate over the unfolding trial of Donald Trump in Manhattan, there has been surprisingly little of it paid to a key element: its possible outcome and, specifically, the prospect that a former and potentially future president could be sentenced to prison time.

The case — brought by Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, against Mr. Trump — represents the first time in our nation’s history that a former president is a defendant in a criminal trial. As such, it has generated lots of debate about the case’s legal strength and integrity, as well as its potential impact on Mr. Trump’s efforts to win back the White House.

A review of thousands of cases in New York that charged the same felony suggests something striking: If Mr. Trump is found guilty, incarceration is an actual possibility. It’s not certain, of course, but it is plausible.

Jury selection has begun, and it’s not too soon to talk about what the possibility of a sentence, including a prison sentence, would look like for Mr. Trump, for the election and for the country — including what would happen if he is re-elected.

The case focuses on alleged interference in the 2016 election, which consisted of a hush-money payment Michael Cohen, the former president’s fixer at the time, made in 2016 to a porn star, Stormy Daniels, who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump. Mr. Bragg is arguing that the cover-up cheated voters of the chance to fully assess Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

This may be the first criminal trial of a former president in American history, but if convicted, Mr. Trump’s fate is likely to be determined by the same core factors that guide the sentencing of every criminal defendant in New York State Court.

Comparable cases. The first factor is the base line against which judges measure all sentences: how other defendants have been treated for similar offenses. My research encompassed almost 10,000 cases of felony falsifying business records that have been prosecuted across the state of New York since 2015. Over a similar period, the Manhattan D.A. has charged over 400 of these cases . In roughly the first year of Mr. Bragg’s tenure, his team alone filed 166 felony counts for falsifying business records against 34 people or companies.

Contrary to claims that there will be no sentence of incarceration for falsifying business records, when a felony conviction involves serious misconduct, defendants can be sentenced to some prison time. My analysis of the most recent data indicates that approximately one in 10 cases in which the most serious charge at arraignment is falsifying business records in the first degree and in which the court ultimately imposes a sentence, results in a term of imprisonment.

To be clear, these cases generally differ from Mr. Trump’s case in one important respect: They typically involve additional charges besides just falsifying records. That clearly complicates what we might expect if Mr. Trump is convicted.

Nevertheless, there are many previous cases involving falsifying business records along with other charges where the conduct was less serious than is alleged against Mr. Trump and prison time was imposed. For instance, Richard Luthmann was accused of attempting to deceive voters — in his case, impersonating New York political figures on social media in an attempt to influence campaigns. He pleaded guilty to three counts of falsifying business records in the first degree (as well as to other charges). He received a sentence of incarceration on the felony falsification counts (although the sentence was not solely attributable to the plea).

A defendant in another case was accused of stealing in excess of $50,000 from her employer and, like in this case, falsifying one or more invoices as part of the scheme. She was indicted on a single grand larceny charge and ultimately pleaded guilty to one felony count of business record falsification for a false invoice of just under $10,000. She received 364 days in prison.

To be sure, for a typical first-time offender charged only with run-of-the-mill business record falsification, a prison sentence would be unlikely. On the other hand, Mr. Trump is being prosecuted for 34 counts of conduct that might have changed the course of American history.

Seriousness of the crime. Mr. Bragg alleges that Mr. Trump concealed critical information from voters (paying hush money to suppress an extramarital relationship) that could have harmed his campaign, particularly if it came to light after the revelation of another scandal — the “Access Hollywood” tape . If proved, that could be seen not just as unfortunate personal judgment but also, as Justice Juan Merchan has described it, an attempt “to unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential election.”

History and character. To date, Mr. Trump has been unrepentant about the events alleged in this case. There is every reason to believe that will not change even if he is convicted, and lack of remorse is a negative at sentencing. Justice Merchan’s evaluation of Mr. Trump’s history and character may also be informed by the other judgments against him, including Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling that Mr. Trump engaged in repeated and persistent business fraud, a jury finding that he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll and a related defamation verdict by a second jury.

Justice Merchan may also weigh the fact that Mr. Trump has been repeatedly held in contempt , warned , fined and gagged by state and federal judges. That includes for statements he made that exposed witnesses, individuals in the judicial system and their families to danger. More recently, Mr. Trump made personal attacks on Justice Merchan’s daughter, resulting in an extension of the gag order in the case. He now stands accused of violating it again by commenting on witnesses.

What this all suggests is that a term of imprisonment for Mr. Trump, while far from certain for a former president, is not off the table. If he receives a sentence of incarceration, perhaps the likeliest term is six months, although he could face up to four years, particularly if Mr. Trump chooses to testify, as he said he intends to do , and the judge believes he lied on the stand . Probation is also available, as are more flexible approaches like a sentence of spending every weekend in jail for a year.

We will probably know what the judge will do within 30 to 60 days of the end of the trial, which could run into mid-June. If there is a conviction, that would mean a late summer or early fall sentencing.

Justice Merchan would have to wrestle in the middle of an election year with the potential impact of sentencing a former president and current candidate.

If Mr. Trump is sentenced to a period of incarceration, the reaction of the American public will probably be as polarized as our divided electorate itself. Yet as some polls suggest — with the caveat that we should always be cautious of polls early in the race posing hypothetical questions — many key swing state voters said they would not vote for a felon.

If Mr. Trump is convicted and then loses the presidential election, he will probably be granted bail, pending an appeal, which will take about a year. That means if any appeals are unsuccessful, he will most likely have to serve any sentence starting sometime next year. He will be sequestered with his Secret Service protection; if it is less than a year, probably in Rikers Island. His protective detail will probably be his main company, since Mr. Trump will surely be isolated from other inmates for his safety.

If Mr. Trump wins the presidential election, he can’t pardon himself because it is a state case. He will be likely to order the Justice Department to challenge his sentence, and department opinions have concluded that a sitting president could not be imprisoned, since that would prevent the president from fulfilling the constitutional duties of the office. The courts have never had to address the question, but they could well agree with the Justice Department.

So if Mr. Trump is convicted and sentenced to a period of incarceration, its ultimate significance is probably this: When the American people go to the polls in November, they will be voting on whether Mr. Trump should be held accountable for his original election interference.
