Good Friends and Their Characteristics Essay
Having a close confidant makes life more interesting and easier. Therefore, a good friend is a big bonus in our lives. However, an especially disturbing aspect is that it is very difficult to find or keep good friends. Sometimes friendship develops much quicker but does not mature into a relationship that stands the test of time. A best friend is not just a person who has the right traits, but one who has qualities that sum up to a true friend. Although I have varied relationships with people, I believe I am a good friend. This paper explains why I find myself as one of the best friends you will ever come across.
Life has taught me that being a good friend is not a bed of roses. Taking time to nourish a good friendship is an even bigger hurdle. Nonetheless, nurturing a friendship is worth every effort. During our stay on this earth, some people will stand by our side while others will not. I am part of the small population that makes their friendship count. Of course, I cannot look for a good friend if I cannot make one. I must be that good friend I want to have. This requires from me a lot of effort, goodwill, and care. There are stories of people who had many friends surrounding them when they were at the top. However, there were none left to console them after their downfall. My personality cannot allow me to treat a friend this way. The difficulties we face in life should strengthen a friendship rather than kill it.
A number of outstanding traits make me a true friend. These qualities combine to form my character. My honesty, as a friend, is also a culmination of these traits and other values. Loyalty, intelligence, and sensitivity are some of the qualities that qualify me as a good friend. In addition, most friends seem to like my humor and generosity. It is worth noting that all good friends share these key traits. For an instant, a good friend accepts someone with or without his flaws, corrects him without hesitation, and assists him without expectations or reservations.
I do not keep friends to discuss day to day happenings but as soul mates. Friends fill my soul with unconditional love and acceptance. Subsequently, my friends receive a full dose of the same in return. This explains why my friends are not afraid to share anything with me. For instance, my friends confide in me when they are happy, sad, or grieving.
Interestingly, they also share in my predicaments and good times. These interesting moments strengthen the bond between my friends and me.
A good friend’s endeavor to create a trusting relationship is always there in good or testing times and works hard towards deepening a friendship. These are qualities I have expertly adopted as a person. Perhaps, this explains why I am a good friend, and my friendship lasts. Being a good friend calls for personal sacrifice. Life is all about making choices, and being a good friend is one of the most difficult to make. To succeed, one must have moral support and love. Nonetheless, to receive love and moral support, one must love back and support others. Creating friends and keeping friendships are arts I have mastered to perfection.

Essay on a Good Friend 500 Words in English
Below we have provided a Good Friend Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.
A good friend is a person difficult to find and irresistible when found. They possess the most significant traits, like love, compassion, honesty, and compatibility. We are always known by the kind of people we are surrounded. Therefore, having a good friend is a blessing that God has bestowed upon us. In the times where materialism is on the rise, having a good friend is scarce. If we go back in history, we will witness real and robust friendships which helped in invasions and fighting wars. For instance, Freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh , Rajguru, and Sukhdev were real friends who stood for each other and did not give up until the end. They not only had deep understanding but profound respect for each other’s differences and similarities.
Qualities of a Good Friend
It is tricky to peg down the exceptional qualities of a good friend because it’s subjective and depends upon people’s personality.
- Attentive and a good listener: not only mere listening but careful listening is crucial to sympathise and understand the crisis the other person is going through. We need someone when we are having a problem or a bad day to appease us. That is the time a good friend comes into the picture who cautiously listens to us and attends our needs at that time.
- Trustworthy: whether it a fight with a sibling, a secret crush or trouble in school or home, a good friend is someone we can rely on and share everything without any fear of disclosure from his/her end. Their lips are sealed unless we face any danger. Thus, trait allows us to communicate our intimate thoughts, feelings and experiences freely.
- Caring: Taking care of our small needs like buying favourite crisps, coffee, chocolate, hugging or teasing a caring friend is anxious about our state of mind and wants to offer help to overcome and bring back the smile. The health and well-being of one another are vital to them.
- Non-Judgemental: Accepting differences is pivotal in friendship as the relationship needs to sustain in the long run. They don’t judge but aid in overcoming mistakes and push us to do better than dwell on our shortcomings.
- Humorous: A good friend handles a worse situation by passing funny but non-offensive remarks. They make us laugh and uplift our lousy mood and ensure that the smile is present always on the face.
- Forgiving: There is no punishment and reward game. Mistakes are forgiven and left in the past. They do not hold grudges and has the heart to absolve from any fault.
- Supportive: In dreadful conditions, they shield us from errors and problems by being supportive. The evils like jealousy, bitterness and hatred don’t exist; in fact, they celebrate our victories and suggest improvements in our losses.
- Loyal: We don’t need a traitor who goes on spreading bad things behind our back and talk sweetly in front of us. Loyalty is a trait that we seek in our friendship since the time it is formed. A good friend will never spill the secrets or criticise us once our backs are turned.
- Empathy: It is a trait which is rare and found in few. It is the ability to put oneself in other’s shoes to comprehend their feelings and then react or respond accordingly. Sometimes, we are unable to convey what we feel and want others to understand, that is the time the excellent friend plays a crucial role in empathising and then reciprocate wisely.
- Positive attitude: A peer group defines the kind of energy we resonate in society and our attitude towards life. Being positive at all times is the most prominent trait a good friend possesses. They won’t dishearten easily but be positive in every situation. Whether it is scoring low grades in the exam or failing in a competition, the ray of hope always lingers in their heart and mind.
Depending upon our behaviour, some may have a more natural way to establish and, maintain a friendship for lifelong. At the same time, few of us crave for a closer bond or try relentlessly to figure out why an existing one fizzled out. It is easy to judge others rather than the following empathy.
We must remember that relationships are formed on mutual interactions, trust, care and love. For our friendship to endure, it is essential to examine our contribution and behaviour. Moreover, it is mandatory to cultivate a healthy relationship and lasting friendship by changing our traits and habits for good. Having someone that we get along is limited and therefore needs to be cherished for life.
Short Essay on a Good Friend
The popular proverb- “A friend in need is a friend indeed” applies to a friend who attends someone when they are in need or trouble. Friend plays a significant role in any individuals life as they are referred to as the pearls of life. Out of many, only a few friends possess qualities like love, care and loyalty in a friendship because they comprehend the meaning of friendship in real sense. They understand that an association needs to be developed over a period of time by accepting the similarities and working on the differences. It needs to be cherished and nurtured for life.
The most crucial trait they possess is to be a good listener. The friendship is shallow if they do not confide in you if they do not listen to your losses and victories. A genuine sympathy is all that a person needs from a friend. Therefore, the quality of compassion is essential to face the crisis their friends are suffering. It is the cornerstone of any relationship, especially friendship. Good friends need to be trustworthy so that secrets can be revealed without having fear or inhibitions. There should not be a room left for betrayal in friendship which will later question the relationship one share.
A good friend is always supportive of whatever fair decisions their friends take. No matter the situation, they need to stand behind them like solid pillars to face any situation that arises. There are several types of friends: social workers, co-workers, schoolmates, college buddies and much more. Each one has its significance and is helpful in one way or another. There is no concrete definition of a good friend as it is subjective and based on different personalities. Nonetheless, a good friend should be treasured and cared for life.

A good friend is a person who is capable of caring, irrespective of any conditions or whether he/she is being cared for or not. A good friend never judges us for our mistakes but only encourages us to do better and become responsible human beings.
Long Essay on a Good Friend
Friendship can exist between any beings and it is not only confined to humans only. Some people call their pets their best friends because they love them unconditionally without expecting anything in return. It surpasses age and could be found between even an old man and a small boy. Friendship is the most important relationship because it is not defined by any social boundaries or roles. A good friend will always look out for you in any situation. As there is an old saying- âFriend in need is a friend indeedâ.
Yet friendship is separated from love in our society, but we have to ask ourselves that donât we love our friends? If two lovers are not great friends then the relationship will face many clashes as they still are playing roles. Friendship detaches you from your roles in society and allows you to explore the unknown, where you can be yourself with the other, our friend accepts us as we are, we become friends because of the way we are.
Role of a Good Friend
A good friend sticks by your side both in your good times and hard times. They always provide you with support to rely on during troubled situations; they inspire you not to lose hope and peace in life. They are the ones with whom we celebrate our joy and success. A true friend is almost like your sibling, who has seen your good and bad sides and knows all your faults and your strength and yet remains completely unbiased with you.
As we grow older we realise that a good friend is always tough to find. We cannot always expect to meet people who will turn out to be good friends and will stay along with us for a long time. So it is very much important not to lose contact with close friends over some time. We all get busy in life to fulfil our needs and desires of earning money and sometimes we lose touch with our good friends. This only brings out the worst as we are no longer in touch with the energy that always supported us at some point in our life.
Do Friendships require Regular Calls and SMS?
A true friendship will never require daily conversations or daily spending of time together. Fellowship recognizes the concept of personal space. A good friend will always give you the privacy you need and allow you to go about your life as you always wanted. A good friendship thrives over gaps of silence. You can go a very long time without any interaction and then one day meet to realise nothing has changed at all.
Traits of Good Friends
Good Listeners - It is of utmost necessity that a friend should be a very good listener.
Reliable - A good friend is one whom you can rely on for anything and everything. People share maximum secrets with their friends only.
Loyalty - True friends are always loyal to each other. A good friend will never try to betray you in any way, talk bad about you behind your back or do anything that questions your friendship.
Trust - Good friends are always trustworthy. One should have friends to whom you can share all your secrets without any fear of getting disclosed.
Short Essay on a Good Friend
Throughout our lives, we meet many people either physically or on social media. Some of them only remain our acquaintances, while others end up becoming some of our very closest friends. The very close ones become like family members. Some say a good friend is just like our family member that we choose for ourselves.
It is always a matter of luck if one gets a good friend in their life. True friendship takes time and trust to build. It does not require any hard work or external push, because it is fun to be around friends. The hard part is to maintain a friendship for a long time. One silly mistake, and all the yearsâ worth of trust breaks in a split second.
Friendship is not bound by peopleâs financial status. A king can be a best friend to a poor beggar and poor labour can be a good friend to a rich industrialist. As we all have heard the story of Lord Krishna that he was in unconditional true friendship with poor Sudama. The friendship of Krishna and Sudama is a milestone for many people. They were like true soul mates.
Good Friend Essay Conclusion
Friendship is one of the best relationship bonds that people share in the world. A good friendship is developed on the foundation of trust, loyalty, and faith. How to spot a bad friend: 3 tips.
The importance of good friends
How to find good friends: 3 tips
The tough part of friendship, finding fulfillment through friendship.
Youâve probably had a lot of amazing â and not so amazing â friends over the years. Knowing what made the great ones stand out from the rest can help you choose the right friends going forward.
Friendships make life more meaningful and are good for your health . Great friends offer emotional support and make you feel loved and connected . These experiences are critical to your mental health and social wellbeing , which is why itâs so important to choose your friends wisely and treat them well.
But sometimes finding, or even being, a good friend is tough. And for many, making friends as an adult already feels harder. Gone are the days where you could simply approach someone and ask, âWant to be my friend?â
Life is busy, filled with distractions and obligations. But in these moments, knowing the qualities of a good friend is even more important. You need a supportive friend the most when work is stressful and personal problems are weighing you down.
Whether you have too many best friends to count or are still looking for one more, knowing the characteristics of a good friend can help you appreciate your current relationships and make new, meaningful connections .
Not every person you meet will become your new closest friend. And approaching meeting new people with an eye toward making a best friend might even cause stress and possibly make people uncomfortable. A network of loose social connections is valuable to both your well-being and success, too. These friendly connections are what form a community .
Many people in your life will move along the spectrum between acquaintance and best friend. These different relationships are all important. Understanding where someone fits on and differentiating what you expect from the relationship is helpful.
But anyone you call a friend should live up to certain standards if youâre going to invest in the relationship. And you ought to, as well, if you want to retain meaningful and mutually enjoyed connections.
From casual acquaintances to personal cheerleaders, here are 11 important qualities of a good friend.
1. They live with integrity
A friend with integrity acts in alignment with their values and commitments. They have strong moral principles and will speak or act when someone violates these principles. Theyâre also self-aware and behave and speak in consistent ways. Because of this, you can rely on what they say theyâll do.
2. You can trust them
A good close friend is honest and speaks from the heart with good intentions. They tell you what you need to hear in a respectful and loving manner, so it doesnât feel hurtful. Because you know they have your best intentions at heart, you can be vulnerable , insecure, and weird with them.
3. âDependabilityâ is their middle name
Thereâs no time for fair-weather and flaky friends. A good friend respects this, trying their best to show up, keep promises, and do what they say theyâll do.
That doesn't mean theyâll be dependable in every situation. This friend might always be a little late, but you know you can depend on them to offer a listening ear when youâre going through a hard time.
4. Theyâre loyal
While blind loyalty is never great, since it might cause you to overlook red flags and toxic traits , great friends are generally loyal to their people â unless these people arenât great friends back.
A loyal friend sticks by you through your highs and lows, offering a helping hand or a listening ear whenever they can. They listen to your side of the story, give you the benefit of the doubt, and defend you when you deserve it.
5. They have empathy for others
Empathy involves understanding othersâ emotions and experiences, and a great friend easily does this for you. If youâre distraught because you didnât get a promotion , this friend does their best to put themselves in your shoes so they can offer you more thoughtful and meaningful support.
And if they know you really well, they might intuit your feelings before you express them, providing comfort and guidance before you even expected it.
6. Theyâre good listeners
Excellent listening skills are one of the most important qualities of a good friend. Great listening allows your friend to understand how you are feeling, retain important information about you (like your favorite food or activity), and validate your emotions. They can only truly know who you are and offer excellent advice if they're actively listening .
7. Their confidence is contagious
A great friend has enough confidence for the both of you, making you shine in social situations and offering you courage when you don't have it. Theyâre self-confident and think you should be, too, since they think youâre the best.
8. Spending time with them makes you feel good
Perhaps the most crucial trait, you should feel great spending time with this person. Social vampires and toxic relationships might exhaust you, but spending time with an excellent friend is something that should cheer you up and energize you. This is someone youâre comfortable seeing even on your most burned out days because itâs not work.
9. They make you laugh
Laughter is lifeâs medicine, and great friends dole it out in tonnes. Humor reduces stress, brightens your mood, and leads to a greater sense of belonging â all things a great relationship should do. So if your friend makes you laugh, know that this seemingly small trait might actually be increasing your well-being.
10. They're non-judgmental
While they might offer âreal talk,â bringing you down to earth with critical insights, real friends never make you feel bad about yourself. They offer a safe space for you to work out issues, share insecurities, and discuss hard topics.
Great friends have your best intentions at heart, no matter what, and simply want you to be happy. And they also understand that your road to happiness is unique to you, so theyâre ready to support you as you change throughout your life.
11. Theyâre low-maintenance
Great friends donât want to be a burden. While theyâll expect some quality time, care, and consideration from you, theyâre low-maintenance and wonât hold your busy-ness against you. And when you reconnect, itâs like no time has passed.
These are excellent friends to be around since theyâre also low-drama, avoiding gossip and making hang-outs lighthearted and fun.
Intuitively, youâll likely know youâve spotted a bad friend because you donât want to spend time with them. They tire you out, make you feel judged, and donât align with your interests and values. In many circumstances, your bad friend wonât be someone elseâs. You might want to befriend someone thatâs more reliable and available than the next person, or maybe whatâs most important to you is interest alignment, like if you both work in the same industry.
You can determine what you require in a friend â and what the sure-fire deal breakers are â by brainstorming and writing down your friendship goals . That said, here are some bad-friend traits extending to all situations:
They constantly âone-upâ you: These friends always make their issues seem more significant than yours. If you tell them about your bad day, they tell you how their day was worse. And if youâre proud of an accomplishment , they mention how they did it better and sooner. This constant competition invalidates your feelings, and good friends donât do that.
Theyâre a bad influence: They encourage you to participate in risky behavior or activities that make you uncomfortable. And if they donât respect your boundaries , theyâre not worth having in your life.
They bully and belittle you: Some âfriendsâ only keep you around to make you feel bad. To feel better about themselves, they take you down â and thatâs simply not friendship, itâs bullying . Instead, great friends raise you up, offering support and affirmation to help you become your best self .
The importance of good friendship
When you have good friends , hard times seem more manageable, and you feel supported and celebrated for who you are. And when times are tough, you know you have someone to count on. No matter the distance or situation, they always seem to know how to make you feel better.
A good friend doesnât need to share your every interest, but they value whatâs important to you and never belittle your passions and hobbies. And when youâre doubtful about your value, they quickly remind you of your importance and what makes you unique.
Having great friendships also means you :
- Gain a sense of belonging
- Feel less socially isolated and lonely
- Have support during tough challenges, like losing a loved one
- Prevents health problems like high blood pressure and heart disease
Making new friends as an adult is difficult. Between work and other obligations, itâs hard to put yourself out there, but itâs worth it.
Here are three tips for finding more healthy friendships.
1. Try different communal activities
If youâre doing an activity you enjoy, chances are high youâll meet like-minded people. And studies show that most people seek friends who are similar to them , so you could try attending group activities with strangers to make new friends .
So many activities exist thatâll expose you to new people, like dance classes, language courses, and exercise groups. Even if youâre shy , you could try less social events like painting or sculpting classes. And if youâre intimidated by trying something new, join an activity youâre already good at to remove this barrier.
Here are some options for meeting new people with similar interests:
- Attend local events: Having local friends makes it easier to hang out and stay in touch, plus you might have more in common. You can find local networking and social events online or on community boards, or even ask around at your workplace or with current friends.
- Volunteer: Helping out a cause you feel passionate about ensures youâll meet new people with concurrent values. You might help out in a soup kitchen or with a beach clean-up, trying your best to chat to strangers each time you attend.
- Find a new social hobby: A great way to meet people is by taking on an out-of-home social hobby, like joining a sports team or book club. You might just go to the same spin studio weekly, building community that way.
2. Become your own best friend
If youâre a great friend to others, that means you can also be a great friend to yourself. And considering yourself âa friendâ means you might treat yourself more kindly and compassionately, like you would your other close connections.
This self-love also boosts your self-esteem and confidence and helps you practice how to treat people well. And these traits wonât go unnoticed by current and future friends.
Take yourself out on a dinner date every once in a while, give yourself a positive pep talk, and enjoy cozy nights doing free time activities you love. Because you deserve it.
3. Be a good friend to others
Great friendship is based on reciprocity: to find good friends, you must be a good friend. Self-reflect, perhaps journaling or talking aloud, to determine whether you embody the traits listed above, like being a good listener and offering your friends a no-judgment safe zone. Then make a self-improvement plan practicing any missing qualities.
True friendship isnât always sunshine and roses. You might fight, fall out of touch, and feel jealous of each other â all of which can strain an otherwise great relationship.
And sometimes, your friendâs decisions wonât make you happy. You might have to confront them about a bad work ethic or toxic trait. These conversations arenât easy, but theyâre necessary if you want to be a good friend. If you communicate openly and honestly, your relationship can survive any rough patch.
Building meaningful relationships takes work. You must be vulnerable with others, honest about how you feel, and supportive when people need you. And you have to trust your gut when you feel like someoneâs a negative influence in your life.
But the struggle is worth it. Now that you know the qualities of a good friend, you can find people to support you during tough times and help you feel more fulfilled in life. Great friends offer belonging and meaning â whatâs more important than that?

The Qualities of Good Friends Essay Example
A friend is a very important part of many societies standards and how many people lives their lives in our modern era. However, a good friend is leagues beyond that of any other friend due to a good friend having a major impact on everyone around them. The qualities of these good friends are how they are trusted, reliable, and the kindness they show those whom they have befriended.
The first and maybe the most important quality is to have trust between the two friends. When two friends trust each other, they can do not have to worry that the other is not lying to them and thus helping to strengthen their bond I the process. Furthermore, once two people have trust that leads to being able to divulge very important ideas and beliefs helping enhance their friendship by having them never needing to worry about betrayal from this good friend. From this trust that can develop from having this good friend resulting in a bond that is very hard to break and has a good chance to last a lifetime.
Secondly, the reliability of a good friend is very important quality as well as trust due to not truly being able to have trust without reliability. Reliable people help with the formation of true trust through simple action that seem to avoid many people by never not showing to plans without warning causing distrust with others. Once the good friend establishes that they are reliable if they ever miss a plan the other friends in the good would know that it only would happen if an emergency had happened in which the trust they have formed would not be hurt. Most importantly, being reliable makes it easier to trust due to never second guessing whether the friend will show up making it easier to trust the person.
Finally, even before gaining the others trust a good friend would always be kind this would in turn lending to a safer and calmer environment around them. Good friend would never try to hurt you even if its just a joke does their kindness in which helps them grow closer because the friend would never hurt the others in the friend groups. Also, if ever one of the friends is down the good friend will always choose to help them instead of letting them be by building them up however, they need to feel whole or happy because it shows the good friend truly cares. From which the kindness that this good friend is always showing it helps create a network of people in which others can rely on when they it is needed most causing trust and overall happiness in those who are exposed to these people.
A good friend is a very important part to may peoples emotional health. Trust, reliable, and kindness are the building blocks to being a good friend to those around them. Trust being the building block for many parts of a healthy friendship. From reliability helping form deeper trust and kindness being the bare minimum for a good friend. Without most of these traits in place friends would not be able to have compassion among each other otherwise friend groups would devolve into toxicity that only hurts those around them.

11 qualities of a good friend + what to watch out for, from therapists.
Our friends are our chosen family, so it's important to choose wisely. But what really makes a good friend? And further, what are the glaring red flags that warn someone isn't actually a good friend at all?
Here are the qualities to look for in a good friend, plus qualities to watch out for, according to relationship experts.
11 qualities of a good friend:
You like being around them..
First things first: You will like being around a truly good friend . That may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people don't actually realize they feel bad around certain people. It's important that your friendships feel warm and fun, according to relationship expert Ken Page, LCSW , because that fun and playful aspect creates feelings of belonging and safety.
It'll be easy to laugh and have fun with a good friend, licensed marriage and family therapist Tiana Leeds, M.A., LMFT , adds, and further, "Deep conversations also come easily and leave you feeling nurtured and filled up."
Further, she adds, there will simply be a natural click with good friends. "When the chemistry is there, conversation flows, there is playfulness, and you can let your guard down. Looking at whether someone has the qualities of a good friend is important, but go beyond the checklist and trust your gut to make sure there is also friend chemistryâthis is what leads to finding friends who are truly kindred spirits," Leeds explains.
They boost you up.
Good friends support you and lift you up when you're down, with Page noting they can be our biggest champions. And as Leeds says, "A good friend is also someone who is committed to their own growth and encourages growth in you," adding that they won't feel jealous or competitive with you, and they'll inspire you to be the fullest version of yourself .
They're there for you.
When the going gets tough, good friends get going. Just like our romantic relationships require effort, maintenance, and care, so, too, do our friendships. As Page puts it, being a good friend requires choice after choice to elevate the importance of your friendship.
"It's this unconditional sense of being there for them, even when you see your friend acting out the same mistakes again and again," he says. Whether they're a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, or simply an overall positive force in your life, good friends are there for you when you need them.
They share in your happiness and pain.
The best friends in our lives are the ones who can celebrate our wins with us but also share in our pain. Page says you know you've got a good friend when you accomplish something and can tell your friend is truly happy for you. "They feel pride for you, they feel joy for you, and they celebrate with youâand a true friend will also hurt for you when you're hurting ," he explains, adding that in the hardest times, having good friends to cushion our landing is so essential.
They're honest with you.
There's a difference between being supportive and enabling certain behaviors . While a good friend will help see you through hard times, you'll also be able to trust in their honesty with you. Or as Page puts it, "You can trust your friend to be kind but also be truthful."
And what's more, a good friend can also remind you when you're acting out the same old patterns in your job, relationship, family, etc.âbecause in plain terms, they know you well enough to call you on your BS. "In long-term friendships, you see the long arcs of patterns, and so good friends are invaluable because they can point this stuff out," Page explains.
You can be your truest self around them.
We all need people we feel we can really be ourselves aroundâno phoniness, no social mask, and no pretending. As Leeds tells mindbodygreen, good friends are trustworthy, understanding, and supportive, so in their presence, you'll be comfortable to show up authentically, which further leads to relaxation and a sense of belonging. "Typically," she adds, "those who have the qualities of a good friend offer a high level of openness, integrity, and acceptance."
And as psychotherapist Jinnie Cristerna, LCSW, Rh.D., CHt, previously told mindbodygreen, "Being able to have fun and share special memories are the result of having a trusting relationship that feels safe."
They're emotionally mature.
Good friends have the emotional maturity to understand healthy conflict resolution and general relationship maintenance, with Leeds noting that people who make good friends typically have an emotional depth, safety, and authenticity to them. Especially in long-term friendships, there will undoubtedly come a time when you butt headsâbut that won't send a true friend running.
"Just like in a romantic relationship, you have to cultivate friendship," Page explains, mentioning a quote from Marianne Williamson where she says, As I grow emotionally, my friends become more like loversâand my lovers become more like friends.
They make time for you.
No one wants to be friends with a total flake, and one basic necessity of a good friend is that they make time for you. Tying back to the idea of general friendship maintenance, Page explains that a good friend will be there for you even when it's not convenient for them and requires their physical or emotional availability.
And as Leeds adds, good friends are also great listeners and skilled communicators. "They show up to the friendship with consistency, kindness, and nonjudgment, [...] putting in effort and prioritizing spending time together," she explains, adding that they'll also be willing to take responsibility for their share of the friendship (i.e., initiating plans and reaching out to check in).
You can trust and be vulnerable with each other.
Quality friendships have a high degree of trust, openness, and vulnerability. You probably wouldn't want to pair up with an emotionally unavailable partner, and the same ought to be true for our friends. They'll be willing to get vulnerable and share truths with you (and you'll feel like you can do the same), Page explains, whether they open up about their relationship, family, or a tough time they're going through.
There's an equal give and take.
Friendships can become one-sided when there isn't a balance of effort and care between both people, but a good friendship will feel reciprocal. As Leeds tells mindbodygreen, you'll feel a balance between being supportive and supported, with good friends having a generosity of spirit that prevents the relationship from slipping into one-sidedness.
They make you feel validated and seen.
Last but certainly not least, good friends will make you feel seen, understood, and validated. In some cases, Page says, they can even remind you of your best qualities when you're feeling down about yourself. "Our friends can instruct us around who we are and our deepest gifts when we don't see them ourselves," he explains. "They appreciate and point out and recognize these gifts, so that's another deep gift of friendshipâthere are some ways we wouldn't even know ourselves if our friends didn't help us see," he adds.
5 signs of a bad friend:
They don't respect you..
Mutual respect is a fundamental key to any healthy relationship, including friendships. Whether your friend disrespects your boundaries , your time, your efforts, or is just generally self-centered, that's not a good friend, according to Leeds.
And as Page adds, an unhealthy friendship is one where your friend's feelings of jealousy or envy are so strong that they can't feel happy for you, or they may not empathize when you're upset, instead just telling you what you're doing wrong, he notes. Overall, the respect just isn't there, and they don't make you feel good to be around.
They're a fair-weather friend.
A fair-weather or one-sided friend is one who only seems to want to hang out when it benefits them in some way. But when you need them? They're nowhere to be found. As Page notes, these friends can be fun to have for certain activities in some instances, but they should be considered in your outer circle , not your innermost one.
They're manipulative.
Manipulation is never a sign of anything positive, so if your friend engages in bullying, guilt tripping, possessiveness, sabotaging, gaslighting, blaming, or any other number of manipulative tactics, watch out. As psychotherapist Annette NuĂąez, Ph.D., LMFT , previously told mindbodygreen , toxic friends "may place blame on you, like everything is always your fault, and you're to blame for everything in the relationship."
Keep your eye out for excessive gossiping, as well. According to Leeds, "Some gossip is normal in most friendships, but if gossip takes on a large role or feels mean-spirited, this is a sign that this person is likely talking about you behind your back too, which will erode the emotional safety in the relationship."
They drag you down.
If good friends boost you up, bad friends tear you down. Page explains that it's a major sign of a bad friend if you don't feel truly supported by them, they're competitive with you, or they simply don't feel good to be around.
"Other qualities to be wary of," Leeds adds, "are not feeling aligned with your friend's values, dishonesty, and if they are critical or frequently very negative." She explains that friends with these qualities will likely drag you down, and if you have to contort who you are in the friendship, "it's fair to assume that you are not comfortable with your friend [or] they are judgmental or not understanding."
They're emotionally immature.
Emotional maturity is required to maintain any healthy relationship, and friendships are no exception. According to NuĂąez a toxic friend will always find a way to circle the conversation back to themselves, for instance, or they'll find a way to blame you for everything.
And as Page tells mindbodygreen, emotionally immature people will have a hard time getting vulnerable or even working through issues in the friendship, which will make it very difficult to sustain.
What are 5 signs of a good friend?
Five key signs of a good friend include a natural chemistry between the two of you, reciprocal effort and support in the relationship, and authenticity, empathy, and trust.
What makes someone a bad friend?
A bad friend is someone who is disrespectful, competitive, jealous, self-absorbed, lacks empathy, and generally doesn't make you feel good to be around.
What makes a friendship strong?
A strong friendship requires authenticity, openness, trust, vulnerability, empathy, and reciprocal effort, support, and care.
The takeaway
We tend to give a whole lot of thought to what we want in a partner, but figuring out what we want in our friends is just as important to our overall well-being and life satisfaction. As Leeds says, we are deeply influenced by those we are close to, "so look for friends who inspire you to be the fullest version of yourself."

Relationships
Hereâs what sets your bestie apart from the rest.
When it comes to friendships, you are always going to be closer to some people than others. While many friends may fall into the âcasual acquaintanceâ category, a special few sit comfortably within your inner circle of ride-or-die besties . There are plenty of unique qualities that set a truly good friend apart, but chances are, youâve never taken a moment to sit and think about what those traits are exactly.
âFriendships can definitely be found on a continuum, with acquaintances on one side and your best friends on the other, with all different types of friendships in between,â Heidi McBain , licensed marriage and family therapist and author of Life Transitions: Personal Stories of Hope Through Lifeâs Most Difficult Challenges and Changes , tells Bustle. So, this begs the question: How does someone make the cut, so to speak, and become one of your closest friends?
The most important thing, as McBain explains, is that you feel like your best self around them. âThere are many different ways [to tell if someone is a good friend], but a big one is that you feel completely comfortable with the other person,â she says. âYou can truly be who you are without fear of judgment on their part. Plus, if this friendship truly benefits both of you â which the deepest friendships do â then your closest friends are able to be exactly who they are with you, as well.â
There are many characteristics that set close friends apart from the rest. To help identify the them, Bustle asked experts to weigh in on the essential qualities of a good friend.
Theyâre Trustworthy
Every relationship needs trust as a core quality, and friendships are no exception. âTheyâre trustworthy and genuine,â Jamie Gruman, Ph.D ., professor of organizational behavior and author of Boost: The Science of Recharging Yourself in an Age of Unrelenting Demands , tells Bustle. âThey offer us a sounding board to test ideas and show our true selves while knowing they wonât betray our confidences or make us feel ashamed of our weaknesses,â he says. âThey offer us caring, honest feedback, even when it might hurt.â This creates a safe environment for both of you to discover yourselves and grow.
Theyâre Supportive
Supportive friends are a lifeline. âGood friends offer us various kinds of support, such as emotional support when weâre feeling insecure and information support when we need to know how to handle problems or deal with ambiguities,â Dr. Gruman says. âThis gives us the reinforcement and encouragement we need to face lifeâs many demands and [helps to] prop us up when needed.â
Darlene Corbett , speaker, therapist, success coach, and author of Stop Depriving The World of You: A Guide For Getting Unstuck , agrees. âA good friend will go 150% to be there for you,â she tells Bustle. âLife is not always easy and fun, but a good friend will be available.â
They Accept You As You Are
Youâre probably comfortable around your good friends because you can be yourself around them; with others, you may put up more of a front or feel less comfortable. âA good friend is someone who will unconditionally accept you as you are, but will never be afraid to tell you the unpleasant truth of a situation or your behavior,â Lisa Orban, author of Itâll Feel Better When It Quits Hurting , tells Bustle. âThey are the mirror that keeps your life in focus when youâve lost perspective.â
Corbett adds lack of judgment is a quality of a good friend. âUnless your friend commits an egregious crime, you should not judge them,â she says. âNone of us leave this earth unscathed from doing something we would rather forget.â
They Actively Listen
While any friend may listen to what you have to say, a great friend actively listens and engages with you. âA good friend ... asks questions and truly listens to the answers,â Susan MacTavish Best, friendship expert and founder of lifestyle site Living MacTavish , tells Bustle.
Dating and relationship coach Varsha Mathur thinks so, too. âA good friend listens and shuts up,â she tells Bustle. âTheyâre a sounding board rather than a coach, and [they] wonât give you advice when all youâre looking for is someone to listen.â
Theyâre Emotionally Available
Just like a romantic partner should be emotionally available , good friends should be, too. âThey make us feel heard and acknowledge us and our points of view,â Dr. Gruman says. âWe feel listened to and appreciated as opposed to ignored or dismissed.â As a result, he says, this allows you to share your life with each other and feel connected, both of which combat loneliness and help you weather distressing circumstances. Even if your best friend doesnât live nearby, you still maintain a close relationship with them.
They Have Similar Interests
Chances are, you and your good friends are a good fit because you have several things in common. âThey are similar to us in terms of values, beliefs, and views about things that matter to us,â Dr. Gruman says. âBecause our personalities and opinions are similar, it gives us a sense of belonging, which satisfies the fundamental human need to feel connected to others â we feel united, togetherness, and a sense of belonging.â
They Show Up During Tough Times
While itâs easy to be there for somebody during good times, itâs even more amazing to be there for them during the not-so-good periods of life. âGood friends show up for the tough times,â Mathur says. âThey help clean up after the party, come to your parentâs funeral, and pick you up from that doctorâs appointment youâve been dreading. All the fun memories are easy to make, but these critical times are the true test of a friendship.â
Theyâre Reciprocal
In any type of relationship, having a balance of give-and-take is important. âGood friendships have reciprocity so youâll have a satisfying relationship, which is symbiotic,â Debbie Mandel , author of Addicted to Stress , tells Bustle. âSometimes you carry the ball, and sometimes your friend does. If one side is doing all the giving, this relationship will tip over.â
Corbett agrees. âThere are the takers and the givers in this world,â she says. âSometimes one friend is giving far more than the other, and this is fine as long as the other party reciprocates at some point. If you are just giving and they are just taking, how good of a friend is that person?â
They Have Your Best Interest In Mind
Sometimes, you may feel as though your good friends know you better than you know yourself. They root for you even when you arenât feeling like your own biggest fan. âGood friends can be your biggest cheerleaders and your greatest advocates,â McBain says. âThey can also serve as accountability buddies , keeping you focused on whatâs most important at that point in your life â even during the times when you may doubt yourself and your own self-worth.â Good friends will continually build you up, remind you how great you really are, and support you as you learn and grow throughout your life.
They Donât Just Reach Out When They Need Something
You can probably think of people who contact you only when they are in need of something. However, with good friends, contact isnât just a one-way street, according to Claudia Sigala , licensed psychotherapist at the mental health provider Alma.
âWhen emotional reciprocity is absent in a friendship , the relationship can feel one-sided, and a friend can start feeling like they do not matter and their needs are not important,â Sigala previously told Bustle. Both people in a friendship should feel valued and heard, but you may come across people who see your friendship as a constant support network for them, without giving much back to you. Reciprocity is a quality of a good friend; your bestie wonât see and use you simply as a means to an end, only ever asking things of you.
Theyâre Loyal & Help You Out, No Matter What
You know that friend who drops everything to help you out? Thatâs the definition of a good friend. âThey are there for us when we need them and make our lives easier,â Dr. Gruman says. âThey lighten our load and help shoulder the inevitable hurdles, stresses, and crises life throws at us. Friends can make what seems like an insurmountable mountain into a small hill thatâs easily scaled.â
They Understand The Word âNoâ
It can sometimes feel hard to say ânoâ to someone you care about, but any close friend will understand that you canât say âyesâ to everything. A telltale sign that someone isnât a great friend is if they react negatively to you telling them ânoâ sometimes, according to Kailee Place, a therapist at Shifting Tides Therapeutic Solutions .
âIf thereâs any emotional manipulation, such as guilt or some type of other âpunishmentâ â the silent treatment or passive-aggressiveness â then thatâs a huge red flag," Place previously told Bustle. "Friends need to be able to say ânoâ to each other and respect the otherâs boundaries.â
They Respect Your Differences
While itâs important to share interests, even best friends donât have everything in common. The fact that friends arenât exact clones of each other is what makes platonic relationships so fun and worthwhile. A good friend will understand this and respect the differences between you two. âRespect your friendâs values and ask that they respect yours,â Katie Bennett , co-founder and certified coach at Ama La Vida Coaching, previously told Bustle. âYou may not share the same religion, ideas, or political views as your friend, and thatâs OK. A healthy friendship allows two people to respectfully believe in very different things.â
They Honor Your Boundaries
As in all relationships, boundaries are essential , and a good friend will respect yours and make theirs clear to you. âIt is essential for any relationship that we receive permission first before offering our advice or opinion about someone elseâs life decisions or choices,â Jeffrey Sumber , licensed psychotherapist and relationship consultant, previously explained to Bustle.
A good friend will not only come to realize your boundaries naturally over time, but they will also immediately take into account any specific boundaries you tell them you have. In general, they will respond positively to any personal requests you make when it comes to maintaining the relationship.
They Make You Feel Safe
One of the most telling qualities of a good friend is that you simply feel comfortable and safe being around them just as you are. âHealthy friendships and relationships provide a space in which we are able to feel safe, supported, and valued as an individual, and as a result, one can get through life challenges, develop healthy self-esteem, and cultivate a sense of belonging and trust in the world,â Sigala told Bustle. With a good friend, youâll feel safe and at ease while expressing your true self.
They Connect Easily With You
A good friend is one you can connect with, whether youâre just hanging out and watching Netflix or enjoying a bestieâs night out. Dr. Irene S. Levine , a psychologist and the friendship expert behind The Friendship Blog , tells Bustle that, in interviewing over a thousand women about their friendships for her book, Best Friends Forever: Surviving a Breakup with Your Best Friend ,â so many of them used the same phrase âwe just clickedââ when referring to the bond they felt with their close friends. âGood friends have an ease of communication that minimizes misunderstandings and allows both people to feel understood,â Dr. Levine says.
Theyâre Confident In Their Identity
A quality of a good friend that often goes unnoticed is their confidence in themselves. Good friends wonât try to sabotage you or feel insecure about your relationship because they possess a stable understanding of who they are. Dr. Marisa G. Franco , a professor, author, speaker, and friendship expert, emphasizes the importance of identity affirmation in a good friend. âPeople that can respect your choices for your own identity, even if it doesn't reflect what they would do for themselves,â are people who are high in identity affirmation, according to Dr. Franco. âThey affirm you in the identity that you want to be.â
Theyâre Securely Attached
In her forthcoming book Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make â and Keep â Friends , Dr. Franco discusses the importance of healthy attachment styles in friendships. Friends who are securely attached will be direct with you when necessary â they âbring up conflicts in a non-attacking way, when it comes up, so they can give you a chance to work on it with them, instead of just backing away, or ghosting,â Dr. Franco said. A good friend notices when thereâs something wrong and wants to work the problem out.
They Celebrate You
When your bestie wins, itâs feels like you win, too. Not only should a good friend be supportive, but they should also be able to celebrate you and your successes in life. âWhen they succeed, we feel like we succeed,â Dr. Franco said. âThat's what happens when intimacy goes right. The implications of that is in a good friend, you should expect things like they're happy for you, for your success. They don't try to cut you down.â
Theyâre Forgiving
In friendships (and in life) nobodyâs perfect, and a good friend recognizes that. Dr. Levine shared the importance of forgiveness in a relationship and being gentle when a friend doesnât meet all your expectations â and vice-versa. âFriends recognize that people make mistakes,â she said. âThey also realize that people are different and even good friends donât always agree or think the same about every issue.â
They Express Love To You, In Whatever Way They Can
Love languages arenât just for romantic relationships. Dr. Franco underscored the importance of giving and receiving platonic love as a pillar of a good, lasting friendship. âThey express love towards you in whatever way they like to express it,â Dr. Franco said, âwhether that's acts of service or telling you how much they love you or how important you are to them.â Tell your bestie you love them, and a good friend will express love back.
There are many qualities that make a good friend, some of which may be particularly important to you based on your personal values. If youâre hoping to take a casual acquaintance to the next level, there are plenty of ways to become closer with someone and (hopefully) elevate them to âclose friendâ status. You may even realize that in some instances you could be a better friend, and itâs never too late to make those changes and show up for the people you love.

25 qualities of a good friend: People you can really count on

Thereâs a friend in mind as I write this. Sheâs more sister than friend. Sheâs more family than my blood siblings.
How I lucked onto such an amazing human being is beyond me, but I did, and itâs wonderful.
Not a day goes by that Iâm not thankful we travel the cosmos together via this big, varied Earth.
This connection wasnât simply pulled from the ether, nor does it maintain itself by sparkles and rainbows.
There are certain qualities that must be shared in order to form the bonds of good and true friendship.
Here are 25 characteristics that make someone a great friend.
1. They are kind
Youâd think this was a given for any type of human interaction, but kindness is often overlooked.
Weâve likely experienced that âbend over backwardsâ kind of kindness that, to be honest, makes people a little uncomfortable.
The kindness of a good friend is more the âstand with youâ variety. Rather than give you the shirt off their back, theyâll make sure that both of your needs are tended to so that thereâs never a need for either of you to greet the world half naked.
2. They are honest
Another of the main qualities of a good friend is that they will let you know when theyâre hurt by you, confused by you, see you being foolish, and can tell when youâre hiding.
A lot of people donât want to do any of these. Itâs easier for them to hide behind âI donât want to hurt your feelings.â
Thing is, good friends share. Even pain. Discomfort enters everywhere in life; itâd be dishonest to pretend it avoids friendship altogether.
3. They are individual
A sense of identity creates amazing bonds. Good friends arenât trying to become you, theyâre fully-realized unto themselves.
Their sense of individuality plays off your own, and even enhances areas in both of you that may have gone unnoticed before.
And while dreams, goals, and temperaments are often similar, even the best symbiotic friendships know there are times when each individual must pull away to reflect and rejuvenate on their own.
4. They are adventurous
Boredom is the absence of stimulation, be it mental, emotional, or physical stimulation.
Good friends satisfy all three of those areas; theyâre adventurous in that they like to do things, think things, feel things, and share in those things with you.
This doesnât necessarily mean mountain climbing or bungee jumping; a trip to a new restaurant will do.
The desire and willingness to experience the world is an inseparable part of friendship because it says âtake my hand and letâs see whatâs out there!â
5. They are playful
If not for good friends, milk would never have snorted from your nose in junior high; you wouldnât have half as many stories about the things you did in college; half of those stories wouldnât involve nudity in one fashion or another, and today, as adults, thereâs still a chance of liquids snorting from your nose. Except now itâs wine.
Friends play with us. They make us laugh at the most inopportune moments (devils) and catching a twinkle in their eyes is like the promise of Christmas morning.
The world pretends to be a serious place, but playtime stops it dead in its tracks every time.
6. They are protective
Jimi Hendrix was probably thinking about a good friend when he came up with the lyric, âI stand up next to a mountain, I chop it down with the edge of my hand.â
Good friends arenât protective of you in a self-interested, possessive way; theyâre protective of you , all the oddly shaped, precious, intrinsic bits that make up your traveling soul, because those are the bits that truly gravitationally attract us to bright, brilliant souls.
It is a mission they take upon themselves often without knowing theyâve done so, but theyâll do it from here to eternity, whether standing up to a mountain, shielding you from impending harm, or even at times protecting you from yourself.
7. They are trustworthy
There are people we trust only as far as we see them. Those donât make good friends.
Then there are those whom weâd place everything that makes us âusâ into an egg, give it to them, and allow them to race on pogo sticks across a booby-trapped, rubble-strewn field while we sip lemonade during the wait for them to return it.
We trust our good friends to be good people. If not: splat.
8. They are nurturing
Yes, a good friend holds your hair aside for you while you perform the gutbucket serenade, but she also makes sure youâre eating enough, getting enough rest, sinking into bubble baths at least once a month, and listening wide-eyed as you recount to her your latest achievement or newfound goal.
Good friends become friends, parents, lovers, doctors, and confidants all in one without it ever seeming squicky or difficult.
9. They listen
Compassion and empathy combine to make our good friends excellent listeners because, honestly, who wants to project âMe, me, meâ all the time at anyone?
Itâs good to be silent and allow our friends to fill us with themselves, as they do with us.
Another key characteristic of a good friend is that they listen to your hopes, fears, questions, dreams, foolishness, musings, prattlings, and more, not out of obligation, but because they genuinely care.
10. They are helpful
A good friend has your back. Not in a pinch. Always.
If youâre tired, they take on your load. If you need help figuring something out, theyâre your research partners. They neither tally nor begrudge, and if one task is done and you need them for more, they have no problem being there. Period.
11. They have clairvoyance
Perhaps not Stephen King-level clairvoyance (couldnât hurt though), but good friends often seem to know what you need before you need it.
Miraculously, they call at just that point during your work day from hell when youâre about to fling staplers like throwing stars, then immediately youâre calm enough for one more meeting before quitting time.
Is this merely a function of knowing your moods and routines, or is a deeper connection at play? The fun in certain mysteries is in not even trying to figure them out.
12. They are optimistic but practical
âLaissez les bons temps rouler!â â Let the good times roll â is the rallying cry of friends everywhere, but itâs one that a good friend tempers with the knowledge that impermanence is part of life.
Good times end, or sometimes have to wait, but that doesnât stop the joy of having a friend live in your heart one bit.
13. They are respectful
Respectful of you, respectful of your time, respectful of your right to make mistakes: these are hallmarks of someone worthy of being allowed into your life.
Respectful of the things you love, the things you fear, the things you avoid. Without respect, friendship slips into becoming just another of narcissismâs mirrors: you see the other as little more than an extension of you until theyâre no longer useful.
14. They are fearlessly huggable
Hugs are so necessary in this life. A good friend is one who hugged you yesterday, the day before, and sees no reason why they wouldnât today.
Everyoneâs frequency varies, but living as though thereâs no rule against serial hugging tends to be a win-win scenario.
15. They are open-hearted
Friendship is like an extreme sport of soul-to-soul connectivity: weâre slamming about on this Earth never knowing where weâll bounce or who these people we bounce off of are. Extreme humaning.
It takes guts to open yourself to someone who feels as randomly placed on a planet as you do. But good friends do this. They open their hearts, bare their souls, and leave space for you to tuck away a piece of yourself in there for safekeeping.
Itâs a long journey, this extreme humaning; good friends not only make the trip bearable, they transform it into a rowdy, wild, absolute delight.
16. You can be your real self around them
One of the often overlooked characteristics of a good friend is that they are accepting of who you are â the good, the bad and the ugly. Because of this, you feel totally comfortable around them and can let every little aspect of your personality out.
Whether itâs the way you do a little dance when youâre happy or the impulsive nature of your drunken self, you donât feel the need to hold back when youâre in their company.
17. You can sit in silence without awkwardness
Following on from the ability to be yourself, another good sign of a deep friendship is your ability to share a moment or period of silence together. When a friendship is more superficial, silence is often deafening and tense, which makes it something to avoid.
I always think a good test of friendship is living together (or perhaps going on holiday together). When you spend enough time in each otherâs company, there are bound to be bouts of silence and how you feel during these is an indicator of how close you are.
18. You are genuinely happy for each other when good things happen
When you see someone who has what you want, the instinctive feeling is one of envy; this holds true for most superficial friendships.
When that person is a true friend, however, you are deeply happy for them and you donât begrudge their fortune. If they find love, you want to meet the new person in their life; if they have success in their career, you want to hear all the details; and if they buy a nice house, you canât wait to go and visit them in it.
If you find yourself wishing you were in their shoes, or believing that they get all the luck, then they probably arenât one of your closest friends.
19. The conversation goes beyond small talk and âcatching upâ
In certain company, you will feel obliged to keep the conversations light and avoid discussions that may hit personal barriers or shine a light on differences of opinions.
Another of the main qualities of a good friend, however, is that you can talk about almost anything you like. You donât just meet up to discuss what youâve both been up to or what you think of the latest TV show; the topic of conversation goes a lot deeper than that.
You can talk about the bigger things in life; your dreams, your fears, religion, politics, the meaning of existence. Debates are not uncommon, and they can even get a little heated, but your conversations are most certainly not drab.
20. They confront you if you are self-sabotaging
Because a real friendship is one in which you can communicate on the deepest of levels and one that embodies trust in the fullest sense, a friend will always seek to prevent you from causing yourself harm.
They are the ones who know you well enough to notice when youâre not acting yourself. They see when youâre drinking too much, not eating enough, taking reckless risks with your safety and wellbeing, jeopardizing your career, or doing something else that youâll later regret.
As hard as it might be for them to confront you about such things, itâs a sign of a real friend that they would find it even harder to sit back and watch you capitulate.
21. They will encourage rather than disparage you for trying new things
Your hobbies, tastes, and opinions are bound to change over time and your friends will, no doubt, have something to say about it.
Those who question you for trying new things; the people who laugh at the very prospect; they are not truly your friends.
A real friend will be supportive of you and your growth as a person. Whether you are learning to salsa, volunteering for a charity in your spare time, or exploring your spiritual side, they will wholeheartedly encourage you to go for it.
And should you change your mind later on in time, they wonât be the ones saying âI told you soâ, they will be the ones who congratulate you for giving it your best shot.
22. They will forgive you for (almost) anything
One of the most important qualities of a good friend is that they will do everything they can to forgive you when you do wrong by them. They will try to understand the reasons you acted as you did, they will talk to you about it, and they will try and help you resolve any troubles you may be facing.
Thatâs not to say that they will let you get away with absolutely anything. It is possible to destroy friendships with a single act, no matter how true and deep they are.
They may well forgive you for what you have done even if they decide that it is best to part ways.
23. You are genuinely excited to see them
Have you ever arranged to meet up with a so-called friend, but secretly hoped that they would cancel? If so, itâs likely that you donât really count them as one of your close friends.
When you plan to see a real friend, on the other hand, you get mentally and physically excited by the prospect. And if they have to cancel for any reason, you feel bitterly disappointed by it.
24. You do not feel guilty about turning down an invitation from them
As strange as it may sound, if youâre feeling a sense of guilt when you donât want to go to a friendâs event, you may not be as close as you think.
Chances are that youâll be worried how they may take your rejection and what theyâll think of you because of it. You suspect that they may begrudge you or find some sort of insult in it and this is what will cause the guilty feelings. It may even push you into doing things that youâd rather not do â hardly a trait of friendship.
Conversely, when a true friend invites you to something and you feel the need to decline, there is always a sense that they will understand unconditionally. You know, deep down, that they wonât hold it against you or feel any differently about you or your friendship.
25. You feel comfortable enough to ask them a favor
Relating closely back to the point on someoneâs willingness to help, if you would be happy to ask someone for a favor, thereâs every chance you consider that person a close friend.
This is because you are confident that they will do whatever they can to assist you and because should they not be able to help, you wonât take it as a rejection. If you ask a more casual acquaintance for a favor and they say no, you may well be left wondering what their reasons are.

Expository Essay Example: Qualities of a Good Friend
Of all the friends one gets to have in a lifetime, the good friends are the ones who last longest and become family. Friends are the people we let into our walled-off lives â they are the people we know well and with whom we have a bond of mutual affection. A good friend is someone who defends and protects, who is loyal, considerate and kind, a person who is fun and brings out the best in their friends. The list of qualities making up a good friend is endless and depends on the individual. However, there are many common qualities that can be seen in all âgoodâ friends.
For starters, a good friend is a person on which someone else can always depend. This can probably be said about all good friends. They are dependable . When another friend needs them, they are the first there to help. They make their friendâs problem their own problem, too. Whether itâs money, time, resources or emotional support, a good friend is always there for someone they care about, for their other friends. They are reliable â you can always rely on a good friend. It’s kind of a little miracle, that your friend always happens to be there for you, willing to offer their time and energy.
Also, another quality of a good friend is being a good listener . Sometimes, people just need someone to talk to, someone who will listen and put their own thoughts, concerns, and opinions aside just for a few minutes. Being a good listener is a friend attractor, actually, because listening demonstrates oneâs support, sensitivity, empathy, kindness, and consideration â among other things. In times of celebration and in times of hardship, what everyone needs and wants and requires is someone they can express their thoughts, emotions, concerns, and celebrations to. Itâs a rather simple, almost innate need â to have a friend.
On top of that, a good friend is thoughtful . A good friend is a friend who will, upon hearing of their friendâs bad day, will change their plans and plan something that friend will definitely find uplifting. A good friend in someone who will, upon getting the news about their friendâs promotion or a new job, will throw a party in their name and celebrate with them to make the moment memorable and special. Thoughtfulness means mindfulness, which requires being a good listener and caring about a person.
Everyone wants respect , needs it and has to have it. It feels good. Itâs a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements, something all good friends also must have or demonstrate from time to time. Most good friendships are supported by mutual respect. This means they look up to that person and have an immense amount of satisfaction in being close to, associating with this person and calling them a âfriend.â
