Here is a band 9 IELTS essay sample.

Some people support the development of factory farming and the scientific creation of fruits and vegetables in agriculture, but others oppose these developments. Discuss both the views and give your own opinion.

Band 9 IELTS essay sample

Scientists are looking for various methods such as factory farming to improve the quality and quantity of agricultural products. While some people support scientific methods of cultivation, others oppose them. In my opinion, these methods will increase the quantity of the produce; however, its quality will be affected.

Farmers can significantly increase their yield by adopting scientific methods of cultivation. As population increases, the demand for food products also increases. The only way to meet this need is to increase production. Since conventional methods of farming are not very effective, modern methods like factory farming are the need of the hour. They help to increase yield and make food products available to people all over the world. Scientific methods also increase the shelf life of agricultural products. Consequently, many seasonal fruits and vegetables are now available throughout the year. Scientists have even managed to grow cold climate fruits like apples and grapes in the warm tropics.

On the flip side, scientific farming may have a negative impact on the quality of the products. Animals raised in factory farms are often given steroids and antibiotics to grow faster. When people consume the meat of these animals, these chemicals also enter their body. Another source of controversy is the cultivation of GM crops. They are drought resistant and pest resistant and give excellent yields. However, even scientists are not sure whether they are fully safe for consumption.

To conclude, modern methods of farming certainly increase yield and as such the adoption of such practices are required to meet the growing demand for food products. However, quality of these products is certainly a cause of concern. It will be great if scientists manage to address those concerns.

Band 4+: Farming is the backbone of every country but nowadays many youngsters hesitate to enter in this profession. Why is this the case and what can be done to avoid it?

These days most of the youngsters doubt to choose farming profession despite farming being the major profession in most of the country. Overall it may be because of the advancement of information technology and negligence in agricultural sector, as most of young people are seen actively involving in this profession.

Young people hesitates to enter farming profession beacuse of the development in IT sector. Despite the improvement in agricultural field, the advancement and growing interest can be seen in IT field and other related field. Youngsters in these days are not willing to work day to night in farming field to grow crops but want results immediately with low input of their energy. Coming generation and Youngsters are not capable in farming as it requires alot of pateince and determination which is not present in young people nowadays.

There are several ways to encourage young people in farming sector it might be done by making improvement in agricultural tools and technologies involving youngsters. Government of every countries should be actively engaged in promotion of agricultural activities. Similarly, subject related to agriculture and farming should be included in Schools and colleges which might interest some of them to enter in this field. They must be taught about its outcomes and advantage to being the backbone of every country. Agricultural products should be promoted in every parts of country and products produced in the other country should be made expensive which will alter youngsters into owns country agricultural products. Different kinds of loans and incentives are another best way to increase youngsters in farming field of the country.

Guys, please help me with more sophisticated ideas and grammar as well. Thanks in advance =) In the age, when wide variety of foods are available, many people prefer consuming food manufactured locally to mass produced, exported food. In this essay I will give my opinion towards this decision. First of all, products, especially foods produced by a local farmer from a neighborhood are usually fresh, whereas exported goods are always experience a long-distance route, which probably worsens their quality. Quite often, people suffer from low qualitative foods, as a consequence they get ill. This will provoke awareness and people will make sure that they are eating safe and fresh food. Moreover, if to think more specifically, their decision to consume locally produced food can lead to the economic development of that area. Farmers and manufacturers will be encouraged to produce more goods and will have resources to improve the quality. On the other hand, I think mass-products go through serious inspections, because many people will use these products, and foods are not an exception. Before exporting and receiving "factory farming" foods they test them on safety and check for freshness. Another thing to mention is that foods in enormous amounts are usually cheaper than locally generated ones. As to long distance travel of factory foods, I could say that nowadays, with the implementation of advanced technologies, transporting goods is very unlikely will deteriorate their quality. For example, huge fridges are installed on the trucks and ships, which guarantee the initial appearance of food. To summarize, I have an impression that buying and eating local foods is good when determining their quality, whereas people with strong consideration about the costs will most probably prefer factory made foods. IELTS Speaking Part 1 – FARMING [Answers + Band 9 Vocabulary]

In IELTS Speaking Part 1 , there will be a Question & Answer session between the candidate and the examiner around a specific topic, such as Farming in this case. The examiner will also ask some general questions in the beginning about the candidate, for instance, about where you live, where you work, study etc .

Part 1 focuses on the ability to share personal information and opinions on everyday life. There is no fixed quota of questions and the examiner is free to ask any number of questions. It lasts for around 4-5 minutes .

Have you ever visited a farm.

Yes, in fact, recently I went to an organic farm with my friends. This place is called “Urban gardening”. It is in Vengal, which is about 100 km from Chennai. I was excited to see the farm. We saw flat beans, groundnuts, watermelon, then we headed onto the most amazing corn field.. Undoubtedly , it was a mind-blowing experience.

What kind of farm do you like?

I mostly like vegetable and fruit farms. The green field, fruit loaded trees, dancing winds and forests are some of their beauties. For a nature lover like me, each and every object existing in nature is as much living as any human being. Someone rightly said, “There is heavenly abode in the farms.”

Do you think farming is important?

Yes, pretty much! Farming is vital for the survival of humanity. Agricultural biodiversity provides humans with food and raw materials for goods – such as cotton for clothing , wood for shelter and fuel , plants and roots for medicines , and materials for biofuels – and with incomes and livelihoods, including those derived from subsistence farming .

Did you do any work at the farm when you were young?

A trip to the rural areas and seeing a real live farm is rare these days. However, when I was a teenager I used to go to the vegetable farm with my Uncle. I pulled out watermelons from the patch and stored them in huge baskets. Indeed, spending time on a farm changed the way I see food now.

The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words

The maps illustrate the current and predicted future Islip town centre.

Overall, it is clear from the maps that some pedestrianisation is planned for shopping and housing area, while a new road for vehicles is planned .

Focusing on the current map, the town center is developed around a main road, which stretches from the west to the east. There are many shops to the north and to the south of the road. Whilst it of the countryside in the north, a big area is occupied by housing in the south. This area is limited by a park in the east and a school in the south-west. Both of these structures are connected to the main road by side roads.

Moving on to the predictions, a circular road that goes around the city center attracts attention. This road expected to be built is a dual carriageway. The middle part of the main road is projected to be pedestrianised. Although the southern part of Islip is not to see big changes other than some new housing and a in the size of the park, there are many changes planned for the northern part. Shops in this part will be demolished and a shopping centre and a housing area will be introduced. A bus station and a parking area are also planned to be built to the west and the east of the shopping centre, respectively.

This is a great report. All aspects were covered and a fully developed response was provided. Some mistakes are still present and require more attention. The vocabulary could have been enhanced further and this report would benefit from more frequent use of complex structures. Overall, seems worthy of Band 8.

The maps illustrate the current and some proposed changes of Islip town.

Overall, new spots are anticipated to replace shops and countryside at north side and some minor altercation at south.

Currently, there is the main road which stretches from west to east. Also, row of shops are can be seen at north and south of the main road. Although the north of the main road is mainly countryside, a big area at the south part is covered with accommodations. Moreover, we can see that school is at the south-west of housing and park at east side which links path to both places from the main road.

Moving on to the projection of Islip town, the middle of road is expected to be removed within certain length. Instead, pathways will be created for pedestrians while bus station, shopping centre, car park, and new housing would also take over the countryside and shops respectively from west to east. Taking into consideration, shops that are affected after the creation of pedestrian road are relocated after demolishing housing in the middle. Not to mention the park will be narrowed in order to build new housing property. In fact, circular dual carriageways is formed along the new facilities connecting the current road at school and park.

Three millenniums ago, a small, prosperous farming community briefly flourished in the freshwater marshes of eastern England. The inhabitants lived in a clutch of thatched roundhouses built on wooden stilts above a channel of the River Nene, which empties into the North Sea. They wore clothes of fine flax linen, with pleats and tasseled hems; bartered for glass and amber beads imported from places as far-flung as present-day Iran; drank from delicate clay poppyhead cups; dined on leg of boar and honey-glazed venison, and fed table scraps to their dogs.

Within a year of its construction, this prehistoric idyll met a dramatic end. A catastrophic fire tore through the compound; the buildings collapsed and the villagers fled, abandoning their garments, tools and weapons. Everything, including the porridge left in cooking pots, crashed through the burning wicker floors into the thick, sticky reed beds below and stayed there. Eventually, the objects sank, hidden and entombed, in more than six feet of oozing peat and silt. The river gradually moved course away from the encampment, but the debris remained intact for nearly 3,000 years, preserving a record of daily life at the end of Britain’s Bronze Age, from 2500 B.C. to 800 B.C.

That frozen moment in time is the subject of two monographs published Tuesday by Cambridge University. Based on a 10-month excavation of what is now known as Must Farm Quarry, a submerged and superbly preserved settlement in the shadow of a potato-chip factory 75 miles north of London, the studies are as detailed as a forensic investigation report of a crime scene. One paper, a site synthesis, runs to 323 pages; the other, for specialists, is nearly 1,000 pages longer.

“This didn’t feel like archaeology,” said Mark Knight, the project director and one of the paper’s authors. “At times, excavating the site felt slightly rude and intrusive, as if we had turned up after a tragedy, picked through someone’s possessions and got a glimpse of what they did one day in 850 B.C.”

Evidence for life in Britain’s Bronze Age has traditionally come from fortified and religious sites that are often found on high, dry landscapes. Most of the clues come as pottery, flint tools and bones. “Generally we have to work with small bits and pieces and barely visible remains of houses, and read between the lines,” said Harry Fokkens, an archaeologist at Leiden University. Convincing anyone that such places were once thriving settlements takes a little imagination.

Paul Pettitt, a Paleolithic archaeologist at Durham University who was not involved with the new studies, said the monograph — a case study of exceptional preservation combined with highly skilled excavation — provide a reminder that domesticity in that period was “colorful, rich, varied and not solely about metal weapons, as the public’s love of metal detecting would suggest.”

Bogged Down

Francis Pryor, a British archaeologist best known for his 1982 discovery of Flag Fen, a Bronze Age site one mile from Must Farm, added: “The Must Farm report is transforming our understanding of British society in the millennium before the Roman Conquest, 2,000 years ago. Far from being primitive, Bronze Age communities lived in harmony with their neighbors, while enjoying life in warm, dry houses with excellent food.”

Until a decade ago, the so-called Pompeii of the Fen lay buried in a clay brick quarry. The original hamlet is believed to have been twice as big — mining in the 20th century obliterated half the archaeological site — and may have housed several dozen people in family units.

What remained were four substantial roundhouses and a small, square entranceway structure erected on a wooden platform and surrounded by a six-foot-high palisade of sharpened ash posts, a barrier no doubt designed for defense. The green timber, fresh wood chips and the absence of repair, rebuilding or insect damage suggested that the complex was relatively new at the time of the blaze.

An analysis of the outermost growth rings of the scorched hardwood pointed to late autumn or early winter as the start date, while the skeletons of three- to six-month-old lambs and the charred larvae of a local species of flea beetle implied that the settlement was destroyed in summer or early autumn.

By piecing together the material culture of these ancient Britons, the study reveals how the houses were constructed and the household goods within, what the residents ate and how their clothes were made.

Among other things, the archaeologists unearthed 180 textiles and fiber items (yarns, cloth, knotted nets), 160 wooden artifacts (bobbins, benches, hafts for metal tools and wheels), 120 pottery vessels (bowls, jars, jugs) and 90 pieces of metalwork (sickles, axes, chisels, a dagger, a hand-held razor for cutting hair). Masses of beads that had formed part of an elaborate necklace indicated a level of sophistication seldom associated with Bronze Age England.

“What’s interesting about this is that it’s an inventory of five Bronze Age households,” Mr. Knight said. “It was like each one had a wedding list for an upmarket department store.”

Although the bones of fish, cattle, sheep and pig were pulled out of the middens (halos of garbage dumped from the huts above), there was no evidence of human casualties. A young woman’s skull turned up outside a dwelling, but because it had been polished by repeated touch, the researchers decided that it was more likely a keepsake or a ritual decoration than a battle trophy. “Auntie’s skull tacked over the front door,” Mr. Knight speculated.

Mosquitoes and Cold Porridge

Interest in Must Farm was first aroused in 1999 when a Cambridge University archaeologist spied a series of oak posts poking out of the beds of clay at the quarry. Dendrochronology dated the poles to prehistory, and excitement grew when preliminary digs unearthed fish traps, bronze swords and spearheads.

The discovery of nine log boats — dugout canoes as long as 28 feet — buried in the muck hinted at the vast wetlands that once blanketed the region. “Boat journeys through reed swamps to the woodlands would have been made many times during the site’s short life,” said Chris Wakefield, the project archaeologist. “In summer, that meant traversing clouds of mosquitoes.”

A large-scale investigation conducted by Cambridge University in 2015 and 2016 exposed the palisade fence, lightweight walkways, the ruins of a roundhouse roof and walls made of woven willow branches called wattle. The way the timbers fell — some vertically, others in eerie, geometric lines — enabled the researchers to map the layout of the circular architecture. One house featured roughly 500 square feet of floor space and seemed to have distinct “activity zones” comparable to rooms in a modern home.

The thatched roofs had three tiers. The base layer of insulating straw was topped by turves — soil formed of dead but not fully decayed plants — and finished with clay, which near the apex of the roof may have formed a chimney or flue. “The people were confident and accomplished homebuilders,” Mr. Knight said. “They had a blueprint that worked beautifully for a drowned landscape.”

Stored in what was presumably the kitchen of one residence were bronze knives, wooden platters and clay pots, some of which were even nested. “There was a simple aesthetic at work that felt coherent and unified,” Mr. Knight said. A clay bowl bearing the fingerprints of its maker still held its final meal: a wheat-grain porridge mixed with animal fat, possibly from a goat or a red deer. A spatula rested against the inside of the dish.

The craftsmanship of the recovered relics and the presence of log boats, perhaps the only reliable means of transport, led researchers to conclude that, rather than an isolated outpost, the site may have been a bustling crossroads for trade. “There was a sense that these early fen folk were at the high end of their society and had access to anything available at that time,” Mr. Knight said. “At the end of the Bronze Age, the rivers of eastern England were the place to be for trade and connections; sites like Stonehenge were now at the periphery.”

Tale of the Tapeworm

The Must Farm community harvested crops and felled trees on the closest dry land. Sheep and cattle grazed there, too. Boar and deer were hunted in the local woodlands — within a two-mile radius of the homestead, the researchers reckon. “The irony is that the community wanted to live on water yet their economy was terrestrial,” Mr. Knight said.

Evidently, food was so abundant that the villagers all but ignored the fish, eels and water fowl swimming around the foundations of the settlement. With good reason, it turns out: Sanitation was an iffy proposition in the fenlands. Sausage-shaped globs found in the settlement’s murky sediment turned out to be fossils of dog and human feces, many flush with eggs from fish tapeworms and giant kidney worms acquired from foraging in the stagnant waterways. The tapeworms are flat, ribbonlike parasites that coil around the intestines of people and can grow to a length of 30 feet. The kidney worms stop at three feet but can destroy vital organs.

Two questions were left unanswered by the otherwise exhaustive Cambridge monographs: Was the blaze the result of an accident, or of an attack by rivals who may have envied the residents’ wealth? And why didn’t any Bronze Agers bother to retrieve all that soggy stuff?

“A settlement like this would have had a shelf life of maybe a generation, and the people who built it had clearly constructed similar sites before,” said David Gibson, a Cambridge archaeologist who collaborated on the study. “It may be that after the fire, they simply started again.”

My hometown is called Sorsogon. I was born and raised there and I can say it is definitely my favorite place . It is located in the southernmost tip of the largest island in my country. I cannot tell that it is a very big province . The town is both traditional and modern. I call it traditional because there still are many festivals celebrated by the locals, yet modern, as it is starting to be developed just like other province having much more sophisticated infrastructure.

Sorsogon is a province that is about 12-hour bus ride from the capital city of the Philippines. Main roads are part of the national highway, so they are wide and huge. The highway happens to be an important place, because it is a key passage for buses and cars that cross it on their way from the North to the South.

Sorsogon is also special as it offers many tourist attractions . For example, in a close vicinity, there are an active volcano and a lake with very beautiful scenery .

Among all the places I have been to, I think Sorsogon is one of the best. There are wonderful places to visit – not crowded and not polluted . I frequently go to beautiful and clean beaches. Sogroson is located on many islands that are not yet developed and are very peaceful and relaxing to stay in. On top of that, natural cold and hot springs are popular here as well. Many people visit t his place to experience them.

In what ways can you improve your hometown ?

One problem in my hometown is a low accessibility of some places due to problems of public transportation systems . Although there are different means of transportation, it can still take you hours to get to certain venues. For example, the earliest bus leaves at 5:00 am and the latest – around 5:30 pm. Therefore, for those who go back from work after 5:30 pm, it gets increasingly difficult to commute.

What is the main reason for liking a hometown other than the fact you were born there ?

I reckon, we all love our hometowns, because we were raised there. I am personally used to this place and I have become very comfortable with it. I have created some very pleasant memories here – met friends, family, my first love, first academic achievements. In my hometown I was formed physiologically as an individual.

Most people in this world do not live in their hometowns. Why ?

Well, I guess the majority of people feel that there could be more opportunities outside of their hometowns and consequently – comfort zones. Therefore, many believe that living in such a comfortable place, with relatives and friends can be distracting and too relaxing on the way of pursuing goals. Also, people (not only youth) strive to explore other places and experience different cultures across the globe.

Museums have been centers of education and research for long. Through the activities of acquiring, conserving, researching and exhibiting a myriad of tangible items like artefacts and specimens, we can confirm that museums are of great educational value. Of late, this notion has been challenged by some people, who think that museums are operated for recreation as well. From my point of view, a museum can serve multi-purposes, although education seems to account for a substantial part.

No one can deny that museums impart knowledge to visitors through various methods. One of them is collecting and displaying objects of historical, scientific or artistic value from a particular site. People working for museums are usually trained to interpret those collected specimens to the general public. Viewing these items allow visitors to acquire knowledge of a specific subject, such as art, history, technology and environment. Another approach that can be taken by a museum is to invite specialists to lecture regularly about various fields, which is instructive as well. An entertainment business, by comparison, hardly serves such educational purposes.

In addition to the way it operates, a museum is distinguished from any other operator in the entertainment industry in various aspects. First and foremost, museums are usually not-for-profit. An admission fee is charged only in some selected museums. It barely targets any specific visitors like an entertainment business usually does. Instead, it is supposed to be open to the general public. Besides, the criteria for selecting displayed items is not based on their commercial values but is per the line of items they mainly concentrate. For instance, a history museum would focus only on those items that are of historical importance, although those items might not have significant market value.

However, to some extent, the remarkable development of museums lately can be attributed to some entertainment purposes to recoup their budget. But at the end, the objective of providing knowledge is far bigger than the entertainment.

As outlined above, there are many benchmarks against which a museum can be distinguished from a recreation provider. They are more of educational value than just being places of amusements.

Museums are an important part of the culture of a community or the location where it is situated. They are also consequential in keeping the memory of our predecessors and their achievements alive in the minds of the present generation. Although many surmise that the primary purpose of museums is to educate, others believe that they are also facilitators of recreation. In my opinion, the intent of visiting a museum has shifted from gathering knowledge to leisure over the past few years. In the following paragraphs, I will elaborate on the topic in detail and justify my views.

It is a well-known fact that museums serve as a centre for rare artefacts and antiques from different eras. Information regarding every aspect of a subject, especially historically significant ones can be found at these exhibitions. Thus, these places are considered ideal for research purposes for several students and scholars. That being said, with the advent of the internet, nearly all kinds of relevant information on a subject matter can be found online, including data that is unavailable even in many major museums. Thereby, touring a museum for educational exploration is slowly going out of fashion.

Moreover, with time, museums themselves have also evolved and adapted to the changing preferences of the people. These days the quality of services like a cafeteria, gift and souvenir shops and the general ambience of a museum is as significant as the exhibits themselves if not more. Presently, the popularity of a museum is not solely dependent on the uniqueness and rarity of the relics showcased; rather, the appearances and the presentation are also influential factors in attracting visitors.

That being said, learning about historical facts, traditions and conventions is still a prime reason for visiting a museum. There are still a considerable amount of people who are driven towards these places more out of curiosity than anything else. However, societal trends are changing with time and museums are gradually shifting from a scholastic to a recreational system of operations.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that the nature of the audience is diverse and there can be several reasons for going to a museum. Nevertheless, it is evident that recently the number of people visiting museums for amusement has increased to a great extent.
