Have you ever been in a 'war room'? Do you know what it is? If you have never been into one and don't know what it is, don't worry; we will introduce you to this old but modernized secret of the Whitehall basement.

Earlier, it was known as a room used during wars by the military and country leaders to plan new strategies, check enemy movements, and for other important discussions. This term's origin can be traced to 1901. However, later, Winston Churchill used the war room extensively during the blitz and V-weapon war. 

As there have been no wars lately (at least in significant parts of the world), this term is taken over by other sectors like ITs, corporates, finance, and politics to conduct the discussion of important strategies along with plans for their quick implementation. One of its most prominent examples is the movie on Clinton's election campaign—The War Room. 

Unlike old times you can't keep a war room locked for days or months. For Satisfying the modern purpose of the war room, a discussion needs to be real quick, focused, one at a time, and fruitful. For that, you and everyone else need to be well prepared in the room.

Preparation for something comes from understanding what it means. So first, we will understand what discussion is?

Discussion is an open forum to consider questions and doubts related to a topic. The purpose of a discussion is to help the participants (and observers) understand and explore the personal meanings of the topic(s) by interacting with people. Also, it is not to convince people but to put forward your views and understand others. 

However, a fruitful discussion session does not just happen. They are the product of concerned cooperative efforts on the part of all participants. The actions include:

1. Thoughtful preparation

If you are a facilitator, then prepare worksheets for the whole discussion or otherwise, for your part in the discussion. While preparing worksheets, you will become more clear about the topic and design a systematic approach to present it. It should carry all the key points that you will present in the session. Besides, don't forget to hand over a copy to each participant after the session.

Tip: Make the worksheet spacious so that it will be easy for you to add notes during the discussion. You can use different ink/pen/style for this.

2. Set ground rules

At least for the beginning, set some ground rules. Later these can be modified if they do not fit. It is necessary to avoid confusion, especially for terms and basic concepts. Otherwise, participants can use one term in different means. Besides, rules like a discussion period can make it easy to pace and cover important topics. 

3. Discussion and debate are not similar

As mentioned earlier, discussions are not to prove your point. It is more about understanding a different perspective(s) for the same topic. Unlike debate, there are not two opposite sides. Here, all are presented as individuals and a team at the same time.

4. Go open-minded 

You may or may not know about the topic. However, if you know about a topic, still there is a chance that others' point of view may surprise you. If you know nothing, then obviously, you are about to learn something new. Whatever the case, don't strangle yourself. Ask what you don't understand and share what you already know.

5. Communication

It is the most important part of the discussion. Try to keep it simple, light, and at the same time topic-related. The mode of communication will depend on the understanding of the participants. You can prepare a discussion with speech, pre-recorded audio, research paper, or visuals.

Tip: Visuals are the most acceptable and easy method. To enhance it you can add text, speech, audio, and other illustrations in a hybrid with visual means.

Transcript: Ruby a. I choose Japanese as my second language. I apply cognitive strategies when I review the lesson. I practice each word’s pronunciation. Also, I would write each new vocabulary. b. To make sure I remember those new words, I would prepare a paper and try to write those words. If I can’t write some word, then I will know I didn’t really learn it. If you are now taking a foreign language, you are becoming quite aware of your own learning processes. (a) In previous language learning experiences, how overtly aware were you of factor like ” good language learner” characteristics, your own styles, and strategies you could consciously apply? (c) What can you do differently in a current language learning situation, given what you now know from reading this chapter on styles and strategies? c. After reading this chapter, I think a study group might be a good choice. In study group, we can practice conversation together or discuss those parts we don’t understand. The characteristic tend to be high in ambiguity tolerance could acquire foreign language easier to low in ambiguity tolerance. Moreover, “Field independence” people are better in writing and reading through the traditional classroom type of learning, like test and drill. However, they are relatively poor in speaking and listening because of their reflective style of learning. “Field dependence” people are reverse. Their talent in speaking and listening could be performed through the face-to-face communication of teaching method. My own style of learning are “FD”, "low ambiguity tolerance”, auditory and kinesthetic, left-brain dominance. On learning foreign language, the strategy I can consciously apply is cognitive style included repetition, note taking, imagery. The strategy I apply in communication is affective style. Apply them on my daily life, including writing diary or conversation to make sure I can completely know how to express properly. b&c. I would try to enhance the level of ambiguity tolerance by being brave and confident. Besides, my learning strategies have to be adjusted because what an individual can do is very limited. Socioaffective strategies must be applied because I could benefit from cooperation with getting feedback and pool information. Moreover, I have ignored the metacognitve strategies before. When a problem came up, I hope the problem could be resolved quickly. About my communication strategies, I would feel anxious and ashamed of wrong speaking. This will help you and the other person to respond to what they say using your body language Direct questions at particular people - If you think someone particular would start a good discussion from your point, then try this. Also this means picking different people for different topics- not just the same person for ALL topics Suggesting that everyone listens to a quieter member of the group - some of us do not speak loudly naturally so we must all consider this person when they are speaking to the group. How would you react...? Writing Intervention You are going to make a list of items to go in a suitcase you are taking on holiday. The first person who starts says... "In my case there is a...." The next person after that must say all of the items the person before them has said before in the correct order. If you are last, that means you have to say all of the items that EVERYONE has said. During group discussion, when it is your turn try to consider the following points: Make sure you begin your answer as clearly as possible - a good starter is "I think that...." then go on to explain WHY you think that. Speak as clearly as possible - this does NOT mean loud, but make sure you are not mumbling so others cannot hear you. Think about your body language - try to send out the right message to listeners, even if you are not feeling confident, your body language can help you 'fake it 'til you make it' (e.g. nodding in agreement, or throwing up your hands in dramatic disagreement). Try to keep your answers short and sweet - Long enough to explain your point, but try not to add any information that is not linked directly to the topic. Do not interrupt someone else talking - even if you disagree, try to save your response for when it is your turn.

Solutions The Path of Our Group Discussion Set Backs On The Trip? What can be done at Fairmont State University to help students make the transition from high school to college? Based on all of our evidence, the criteria we set, and the potential solutions, we chose out final answer. Day One Defining the Problem Finally, we brought all the ideas to the table that could potentially fix the transitioning problem for freshmen. We made sure to refer to our criteria to stay on the right track. And the verdict is... Final Conclusion We then set out to lay out all the things that a good solution would fix. We dug deep into our own experiences and what we thought would really help the problem. Our group met to decide which issue we wanted to conquer.

GD Tips - Initiation TechniquesInitiating a GD is a high profit-high loss strategy.When you initiate a GD, you not only grab the opportunity to speak, you also grab the attention of the examiner and your fellow candidates.If you can make a favourable first impression with your content and communication skills after you initiate a GD, it will help you sail through the discussion.

GD Tips - Initiation TechniquesBut if you initiate a GD and stammer/ stutter/ quote wrong facts and figures, the damage might be irreparable.If you initiate a GD impeccably but don't speak much after that, it gives the impression that you started the GD for the sake of starting it or getting those initial kitty of points earmarked for an initiator!When you start a GD, you are responsible for putting it into the right perspective or framework. So initiate one only if you have in-depth knowledge about the topic at hand.

GD Tips - Summarization/ ConclusionMost GD do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the whole group decides in favor or against the topic. But every GD is summarized. You can summaries what the group has discussed in the GD.

Keep the following points in mind summarizing a discussion:Avoid raising new points. Avoid stating only your viewpoint. Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the GD. Keep it brief and concise. It must incorporate all the important points that came out during the GD. If the examiner asks you to summaries a GD, it means the GD has come to an end. Do not add anything once the GD has been summarized.

Four Henderson McNair Scholars give presentations at national conference

During a visit to nearby Washington D.C., the students had an opportunity to visit with Arkansas U.S. Sen. John Boozman.

Four McNair Scholars from Henderson State University gave oral and poster presentations at the National Conference for McNair Scholars and Undergraduate Research held March 14-17 in College Park, Maryland.

Attendees participated in panel discussions and research workshops, and heard presentations by prestigious keynote speakers.

“Our scholars gained valuable experience presenting and discussing research with their peers,” said Reo Cummings, director of the Ronald E. McNair program at Henderson. “The students received peer reviews and presentation feedback, and fielded questions about their research. This was a valuable opportunity for them to gain experience in a collegial, supportive setting.”

The students who presented include: Otisha Burton – “Patient-Centered Care and Satisfaction in Oncology” Zoie /Autrey – “Highway Bridge Nesting Use Among Cliff Swallows in Arkansas” Alexandrea McClendon – “Process and benefits of Dry Needling” Bobbi Bazzle: “Racial Profiling, Police Brutality, and Shifting Perceptions”

Other Henderson McNair scholars who attended were Bessie Dixon, Mariya Sasser, Bridani Diaz, and Sally Santillan. They were accompanied by Cummings and Dr. Don Kelly, faculty/McNair research technical advisor.

The Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program assists low-income, first generation college students and those from underrepresented groups in preparing for graduate education.

Henderson’s McNair Scholars Program is federally funded and serves 25 undergraduates per year.

Definition of Group Discussion • Group Discussion is a modern method of assessing students personality. • It is both a technique and an art and a comprehensive tool to judge the worthiness of the student and his appropriateness for the job.

Group Discussion • The term suggests a discussion among a group of persons. • The group will have 8 & 12 members who will express their views freely, frankly in a friendly manner, on a topic of current issue. • Within a time limit of 20 to 30 minutes,the abilities of the members of the group is measured.

Prerequisites of a Group Discussion • Topics given by panelists • Planning and preparation • Knowledge with self-confidence • Communication skills/ power of speech • Presentation • Body Language and personal appearance • Being calm and cool

Do`s in group discussion • Appropriate to the issue . • Make original points & support them by substantial reasoning . • Listen to the other participants actively &carefully. • Whatever you say must be with a logical flow,&validate it with an example as far as possible. • Make only accurate statements.

Do`s in group discussion • Modulate the volume, pitch and tone. • Be considerate to the feelings of the others. • Try to get your turn. • Be an active and dynamic participant by listening. • Talk with confidence and self-assurance.

Don’ts during group discussion • Being shy /nervous / keeping isolated from G.D • Interrupting another participant before his arguments are over • Speak in favour ; example:Establish your position and stand by it stubbornly • Changed opinions • Don’t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny.

Don`ts during group discussion • Don’t engage yourself in sub-group conversation. • Don’t repeat and use irrelevant materials. • Addressing yourself to the examiner. • Worrying about making some grammatical mistakes,for your interest the matter you put across are important.

Important points in group discussion • Be assertive: An assertive person is direct , honest careful about not hurting others ‘self-respect’. • A patient listener: listening to another person is one way of showing appreciation. • Right language : Words can make friends & right words at the right time make the best results. • Be analytical and fact-oriented : It is necessary to make relevant points which can be supported with facts and analyzed logically.

Accept criticism • If any member of the group criticizes or disapproves a point, it is unwise to get upset or react sharply. • In case the criticism is flimsy,the same can be pointed out politely. • Maximize participation ; one must try to contribute fully, vigorously & steadily throughout the discussion. • Show leadership ability: A group discussion also evaluates your leadership qualities.

Accept someone's point of view • Praise the argument Example: Remedial English communication is necessary for college students because they fail in communication skill test. Status of literacy of women , is increased from 30% to 70% when compared to past years, in employment sectors organized ,in the IT & ITES field.

Accept the contradicts view • Express your argument with few facts, cases, %, Newspapers publications etc. • Express without hurting others feelings.

Suggestions • Never try to bluff. • Practice group discussion with friends on different subjects. • Remember !speech is a powerful weapon.

Bilingual universities in the US

Hello colleagues, Jennifer Gagliardi, LINCS moderator for the Civics Ed and Citizenship group just posted a recent article, "Soothing the Path for Immigrants to Finish Their College Degrees," in the LINCS Career Pathways group. I wanted to share it here, as well. In this Hechinger Report article, author Olivia Sanchez describes a new online program at Davenport University called Casa Latina that plans to offer bilingual degrees (Spanish/English) in various academic areas beginning in the fall of this year. 

This new program at Davenport is similar to another bilingual university program I've been familiar with for some time, Ana G. Mendez University (AGMU) , which started in Puerto Rico and also has campuses in three locations in Florida. Online classes are also available at AGMU.   At Casa Latina and AGMU, classes are held in English one week and in Spanish the next.  

These bilingual universities could open the door  of opportunity for many Spanish-speaking adult learners in our programs. I can share one wonderful success story. One of my former students, a medical doctor from Cuba, found her way to Ana G. Mendez University and completed a Nurse Practitioner program. She now works as a Nurse Practitioner in the Miami area.
