Kurt Angle Talks Redemption, His Career, And Turning Down The UFC And AEW

Raj Prashad

Kurt Angle’s ability to persevere takes center stage when he reflects on his life story. The latest subject of A&E Network’s “Biography: WWE Legends” series, which debuts on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, follows Angle’s journey from western Pennsylvania to the bright lights of the Olympics, and through pain, devastating loss, and addiction as he navigated life as a sports entertainer.

“My documentary is about overcoming, whether it be anything that you’re going through, any heartache, any difficult situations,” Angle tells Uproxx Sports. “For me, it was addiction. It was injuries on my body, it was deaths of close family members. And it really spiraled out of control. And this documentary is about redemption, and showing that anybody can come out of the gutter if they want to and they really believe.”

Leaving everything on the mat isn’t just a phrase tossed around by wrestlers, it was a way of life for Angle. He won a gold medal — as you might have heard once or twice — with a broken freakin’ neck. While he required pain-reducing shots to get him through the grueling 1996 Summer Olympics, that didn’t stop him from considering a run with the UFC.

If not for a relatively flimsy $15,000 per fight offer from the promotion, his career may have taken a drastically different turn.

“If the money was better when I came out of the Olympics, I definitely I would have went the UFC route,” Angle says. “I believe that. I don’t know if that would have been the best route for me because I had so much success in professional wrestling. I don’t know if I would have been as good of a UFC fighter as I was WWE superstar. So, I think I picked the right trade.

“I’m not upset about it, I don’t have any regrets,” he continues. “But I do wonder every once in a while how I would have done. Sure, I saw Brock (Lesnar)’s success there. And I wouldn’t even have been a heavyweight, I would have been a light heavyweight. So, I think I would have done pretty well.”

The move to professional wrestling two years after his Olympic stardom saw his WWE offer drop from a lucrative 10-year contract in 1996 to having to try out for his spot in 1998. Angle would train with Dory Funk Jr. before getting six months of experience in a Memphis territory promotion and eventually making his main roster debut.

All of this was a bit of a culture shock for Angle, who did not spend his childhood taking in the generations of wrestling stars who came before him.

“It was a big disadvantage that I didn’t grow up watching it,” he says. “I wasn’t a fan of the WWE. I wasn’t a fan of pro wrestling. I was always told by my peers in amateur wrestling, ‘That’s crap, we’re the real deal, they’re fake. Don’t watch it. Don’t listen to them. Just ignore it.’ And I think that amateur wrestling, they gave WWE a bad rap because people thought that professional wrestling was a step above amateur wrestling. It’s just a completely different career change.

“When I came into the WWE, it opened up a whole new world of wrestlers coming in after me because I was such a popular name in amateur wrestling and crossing over,” Angle continues. “Doing what I did, a lot of other wrestlers were like, ‘You know what, I’m gonna follow Kurt Angle, I’m gonna do what he did.’ It opened up new possibilities for careers for amateur wrestlers other than coaching or teaching.”

Angle’s mentality to leave it all on the mat continued throughout his wrestling tenure. He suffered four broken necks from 2003-06. Wary of keeping his spot on the roster, Angle opted against taking a year off to fix the first broken neck he suffered in WWE in early 2003.

Instead, he underwent a minimally invasive surgery that he was told would only keep him out of action for six weeks. Angle proceeded to break his neck twice more in the span of just one year, which led to a reliance on painkillers.

“When I broke my neck, the first time in WWE, that was when I was introduced to painkillers by a doctor,” Angle says. “When I took them, the first one I took, wow, it lit me up. I was like, ‘This is crazy how good I feel.’ I didn’t feel any pain in my neck. I had a surge of adrenaline. And it made me feel euphoric. And that made me feel like I wanted to kick some ass.

“That feeling continued because I continued with the painkillers,” he continues. “And when one didn’t work anymore, because your body builds a tolerance to it, one turned into two, two went to four, four went to eight, eight went to 16. Before I knew it, within eight months, I was taking 65 extra strength Vicodin a day. I was in deep trouble. I mean, I was taking enough to kill a horse, possibly. And I couldn’t get out of it. I couldn’t get myself out of it. I didn’t know what to do. I was in a bind.”

Angle was met with an ultimatum to go to rehab or be released from WWE — he left the promotion and immediately called TNA.

“Part of me does,” Angle responds when asked if he regrets going to TNA. “I mean, when you see the celebrations, 20 years of John Cena, 20 years of Rey Mysterio, could you imagine 20 years I would have had in WWE, it would have been impeccable. I honestly believe nobody would have matched my career if I went 20 years in WWE. But I spent 11 years in TNA and I had a much better career in TNA than I did WWE because I was getting more experience, I was growing. When I left, I just started getting into my prime. So, I was having better matches, which is hard to believe, because I had some great matches in WWE. But I can’t imagine the career I would have had had I spent 20 years in WWE.”

Angle’s addiction peaked with multiple arrests during his time in TNA. But with the support of his wife, Angle got clean and made one final WWE run.

At 53 years old, Angle has still been met with opportunities to wrestle. Earlier this year, he revealed AEW’s Tony Khan offered him a 10-match deal with the promotion that he ultimately turned down.

“Of course I want to wrestle, I want to continue to wrestle, and that would be the greatest thing in the world for me,” Angle said. “But you know, my body at this point in time and 53 years of age, knee replacements, I have a really bad neck, my back’s starting to go. It’s really difficult. If anything, it’s kind of a hinderance. It’s disturbing to get an offer from these guys, when you know you can’t do it. Tony Khan was really cool with me, he gave me two different offers two different times. He wanted me to wrestle, and I just couldn’t do it. I wish I could, but I just couldn’t do it.

“And I also didn’t want to turn my back on WWE,” he continues. “I did it in 2006. I didn’t want to do it again, because those guys were pretty loyal to me. So, I do little things here and there for WWE right now where I make a couple of cameos on TV, do some interviews for them. I stay pretty active with that company. And I want to keep it that way for now. I like that because it gives me freedom. I have my podcasts, I do I have my supplement company that I run. And it gives me the freedom to do other stuff.”

New documentary ‘Angle’ available on Peacock TV is very good – but only actually new-ish

Posted by Dave Hillhouse | Sep 2, 2023

New documentary ‘Angle’ available on Peacock TV is very good – but only actually new-ish

If you catch the new Kurt Angle documentary available today on the Peacock streaming service, you’ll get an engaging hour and forty-five minute look into his life, which is great, but it may also look familiar if you’ve been keeping up with the WWE/A&E productions on Biography . That series, which has often played around with repackaging materials from WWE Network shows and presenting them as “new,” is at it again.

So, the good news is that if you missed the episode of Biography, you get a chance to watch a slightly longer version on Peacock — and it’s a really well-told story. The bad news is that it’s more cheeky, regurgitation of previously released material and slapping a new name on it. WWE Studios, Peacock, and everyone else involved needs to do better in releasing wholly original content.

Now, that being said: it is still a great film on its own; just forgive the inevitable repetition in this review from our previously posted review of the A&E Biography version .

Beginning in Angle’s hometown of Pittsburgh, he talks us through his first love of football, with his brothers Johnny and Eric acknowledging his competitiveness and their communal love of sports – extending to their parents and sister too. Another brother, David, jumps in to talk about those other three boys fighting – maybe he just wanted everyone to get along?

Le’Anne, the only daughter, and parents Jackie and David, are talked about in memoriam, with all three having passed away: David in a construction site accident, Le’Anne due to an overdose, and Jackie to cancer. Angle recalls in harrowing detail the scene of his mother making the decision to take his father off the life-sustaining apparatus in the hospital, breaking down as he speaks.

Angle took all of the emotion that came with that as a teen and charged headlong into sports: first football and then wrestling, becoming a state champion and beating people that he shouldn’t have beaten, according to Johnny. Enter a rivalry with Sylvester Terkay in college, with Terkay seemingly amusingly recalling how the smaller, quicker Angle beat him with one sudden move, setting Angle up to to challenge for the Olympics trials.

That journey doesn’t start well for Angle, and with his confidence crushed he headed to the famed Foxcatcher training facility. Dave Schultz, the recruiter of the facility, saw the potential in Angle, and they decided that he needed to outwork and out-condition his opponents.

Angle’s intense workout schedule, 10 hours a day for 360+ days a year, pays off in the 1995 World Championships, as an overtime match saw Angle remain in top shape while his opponent in the final was exhausted.

Shortly after this high point, through, the Foxcatcher facility was in lock down when the owner of the training centre, John Du Pont, shot and killed Schultz in the driveway of their home on the estate. Dave’s widow Nancy saw it happening and held her husband as he died. Angle got himself off the Foxcatcher payroll just months before the Olympics, but Nancy reached out to him to say she was starting a Dave Schultz Wrestling Club, of which he became the first member.

In the beginning of a match, we see Angle try to block himself from landing on his back by using his head to divert his landing; he heard snapping and popping from his neck but, pushing through, continues on in the tournament. Faced with the chance of missing out on the top place in the trials, he continues to the finals on the pushing of his coaches even though he kept saying he didn’t think he could wrestle.

He won the finals of the U.S. Open tournament by, as he describes it, not wrestling and pushing his opponent back to keep his distance. After that, he hears from doctors about the risks of wrestling with the broken vertebrae in his neck. He seeks treatment that included shots of novocaine before each match.

So, as you may have heard a few times, Angle marches through the Olympic trials with a broken freaking neck – and, as he says, every one of his opponents knew about it. In the finals, his neck was a big target but the novocaine did its part, and his opponent’s game plan didn’t work because Angle didn’t feel a thing. He was able to take advantage of the attack strategy, and it was on to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Mark Henry, a fellow Olympian in 1996 in weightlifting, and Ronda Rousey, Olympic Bronze medallist in Judo in 2008, chime in on the dedication it takes to even get to the Olympics, and it’s most notable that, approaching the halfway mark of the movie, the professional wrestling connections are starting to become more prominent.

In the finals, Angle employed his technique of outlasting his overpowering Iranian opponent, getting into overtime with more energy and he finishes strong, winning the referee’s decision in a spot that, again, with knowledge of the future, played out remarkably close to a pro wrestling finish. Jadidi, the Iranian, raised his own hand while holding the referee’s, making it look like he was the victor, but the ref pulled it down and officially raised Angle’s to bring his Olympic journey to a close.

Now, the next phase begins. Angle admits, as he has in the past, that he initially dismissed any notions or overtures about getting into pro wrestling. Skipping past his near, but not that near involvement with ECW, we accelerate through his early time in the then-WWF with his dislikeable hero gimmick through to his bald, master technician run against the likes of Undertaker and Shawn Michaels in the 2000s. Ric Flair, Dwayne Johnson, Jim Ross, and Steve Austin all attest to Angle’s great run in the WWE.

Now the other side of a life in the ring: Angle’s injuries and addictions. Another broken neck before Wrestlemania XIX, followed by another after a chair shot by Brock Lesnar, and yet another at WrestleMania XX. A fourth broken neck in the WWE alone was awaiting him upon his return, and that’s on top of the tears, sprains, dislocations, lost teeth, and other breaks that Angle lists off.

His second wife, Giovanna, started seeing the signs of her husband’s dependency on pain medications. He also learned that his sister was having her own drug issues, after he had been unknowingly funding it as she kept asking him for money to help with bills. He recalls telling her that he gave her an ultimatum that if she didn’t get clean he wouldn’t talk to her. She didn’t, he held true to his word, and didn’t speak to her for the next right months before she died.

Now, Angle breaks down again and only wishes that he’d spoken to her instead of keeping his word.

Angle’s painkiller usage increased, with him using it to mask his emotional pain as well. He details having about 18 pills waiting on his bedside table just to get himself out of bed in the morning – topping out at his estimate of 65 Vicodin a day. He admits that his addiction overpowered his commitment to wrestling, friends, family, or anything else.

Faced with Vince McMahon’s order to go to rehab, Angle heads to TNA which Austin calls below their level, and Ross calls a “debacle.”

Adding alcohol to his drug addiction and amassing DUIs, Angle’s lowest point in his life sees him in jail, hearing an ultimatum from Giovanna to straighten up or lose her and their children. All this time, Angle recognized his father’s functioning alcoholism in his own behaviour. He commits to getting clean, and describes in detail the struggles of his withdrawal, which he is now scared of and never wants to go through again. Even when injuring his knee a year after drug rehab, Giovanna refuses to let him take any painkillers through his physical rehab. He uses exercises and yoga as a substitute.

The film concludes with his happy, healthy condition, a WWE Hall of Fame induction, and a message that, in a sense, it was all worth it. Not that he’s excusing his mistakes, but more that he’s accepting them as part of his journey to where he is today, and how lucky he is that he made it through the tough times to find peace.

Find the film on Peacock TV today — it’s well worth the watch (unless you’ve seen it before).

Director Alex Perry Reveals How WWE Kurt Angle Documentary Came About

Kurt Angle wrestles Baron Corbin in his farewell match

Kurt Angle's new documentary, "ANGLE," focuses on the legendary wrestler's various trials and tribulations outside a wrestling ring, dating back to his winning an Olympic Gold Medal "with a broken freakin' neck" all the way through his addiction to painkillers . As such, when A&E got hold of the tape, they were unsure if the documentary qualified as a WWE-related documentary as most of the content was unrelated to Angle's illustrious WWE career.

According to Alex Perry, the director of "ANGLE" "the documentary originally started as an independent project that wasn't supposed to air on Peacock. "When WWE acquired this movie, they sent it to A&E because they had a partnership with A&E," Perry said on "The Kurt Angle Show" recently. "And A&E didn't quite understand how we would fit into their show — the WWE Legends biography series . So, they were a little confused when they saw it, and they kind of morphed it into something else. They took it and made it into a pro wrestling episode, which you can't blame them for."

Perry revealed that he and Angle had to "scratch and claw" with WWE to get a different version of the documentary — as it was truly intended — to air on Peacock. "We willed it into existence. We willed it into being made first, and then willed it into being shown. Now, we're hoping that Kurt's fans will will it into relevance, because, at the end of the day, I'm really proud of what we did. I do think we made something special and unique."

It's worth noting that A&E's version did air as part of its "WWE Legends" series last August , and Peacock's version hit the airwaves this past weekend , immediately after the WWE Payback premium live event.
