Useful Free Open Office Templates To Make You More Productive

Open Office 3 is an incredible and diverse productivity tool set. It is an open source program that offers free tools for work processing, presentations, databases, and spreadsheets.

The program can be freely downloaded on PC, Mac, and Linux machines.  The best part?  It can open files from any other program!  Read more about Open Office here and here .

If you need inspiration or want to produce a specific kind of document, never fear!  Their free user-created Open Office templates are awesome, and can save you lots of time and money!

Truly, there is no reason to spend your hard earned cash on expensive software when you can get everything you need right in the Open Office suite.

If you need a word processing program, use OOO's "Write" program; if you need a PowerPoint program, use their "Presentation" software. They even have an Excel-ish program and a database program like Access.

In addition to their powerful tools, they also offer a sweet repository of Open Office templates . You can choose between Business, Education, and Personal templates.  These user created templates are simple to download and simple to use.

This article will highlight some of the most useful templates available in each of the three sections.

The Business section is stuffed full of excellent and resourceful templates.  If you want to publish ANYTHING, you should stop here first.  Open Office offers templates for every make and model of book, magazine, or document.  In addition to the standard letters and reports, you can also find lots of neat extras!

Business Cards

Every person needs to have a business card.  While there are lots of great places to get them made online or in your community, you can use Open Office to create your very own!

This simple template opens and is ready to be completed!  It takes just seconds, and you can use the menu to customize the look to your needs.

Event Posters

To get your business recognized or to announce sales or other groovy events, you might want to use the awesome poster template!

Again, you can change the picture, the background color, the fonts, etc.  Or, if you just need something quick, fill in the blanks and click print!

If you have employees, you need to keep track of the time and pay rates. Open Office hosts a simple template that will allow you to do both!

DVD Inserts

If you provide DVDs to your customers, you might want to include a professional looking DVD insert.  This template is incredibly easy to use!

Finally, you will need to know how to charge your customers, and Invoices are a legal agreement between you and your client.  The template calculates math and has spots for all of the necessary legal information.

Educators will find many of the OOO templates quite handy!  Instead of purchasing expensive software or trying to create a tool on your own, you can instead peruse their repository of templates.

Lesson Plan Templates

There are a few different lesson plan styles, but all of them are fantastic.  They are easy to edit and modify according to your particular needs.  I like this one, but, again, there are others that are just as fabulous!

If you use a rubric for grading or you want to try out a few different types, OOO has the right resources for you!  I like to provide a hard copy of the grading rubric at the start of an assignment, and I like to provide a copy to parents in advance of a lesson.

These various templates are a great starting point for me, and they are off-the-shelf ready for new teachers, too!

Formatted Paper Guidelines, Formatted Paper Templates

If you are in college, you are familiar with the challenge of formatting papers in a particular documentation style (MLA, Chicago, Turabian, IEEE).  OOO has ALL of the formats ready for you to use!  I totally wish they had this kind of template when I was in college.  Be careful, though, and always make sure you use the correct style as instructed by your professor.

If your son is in high school, and it is 11:00pm when he decides to start his math homework, NEVER FEAR!  OOO has printable grid paper for FREE!  No more midnight Walmart runs!

Gradebook Templates

There are several different kinds of gradebook templates, and you can customize each one to your liking.  I love that they are set up to do the math for you!

There are lots of times when you need to make a certain type of document for your kids or for the country club.  Who has time to search all over the web when you can stop by OOO and get what you need for free?

Recipe Cards

Every organization I have ever belonged to has made a recipe book as a fundraiser. Since I don't cook much, I always struggle to remember what a recipe actually looks like.

OOO has a fantastic selection of recipe card templates that make the job of sharing recipes so easy!

March Madness and Sports Grids

A little friendly competition among friends is fun, but it can be such a pain to figure out those charts for Final Four!  OOO comes to the rescue!  Just print these out, and you have instant success.

Shopping List Templates

If you live in a place like Lakeville, you only get to a big grocery store once a month. Instead of just using slips of napkin, we printed out two of OOO's shopping lists and we use one at the Big-Ole Grocer and the other at the Farmer's Market.

It saves us so much time, and I don't have to find those little slips of paper!

Family Budget Planners

There are all sorts of different kinds of budgets and planners to download and print. There are, literally, pages and pages of different ways to organize your cash.  This is just one example, but there are so many more that you might like!

Creative Writing Tools and Templates for Script Writing

Script writing software is expensive.  Comic book layout software is expensive. Generally, most folks that want to write these kinds of ditties don't have the income to afford them.  OOO has a whole host of resources for the aspiring writer.

Need to write a commercial?  Want to write a memoir of your life?  Need to format a screenplay?  OOO has the tools for you!

The Bottom Line

Open Office has awesome templates for every possible situation.  The best part is that these resources are fast to download (on any platform) and are FREE!  Let us know what Open Office templates YOU like.

100+ Templates for OpenOffice and LibreOffice

Both OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice (a derivative of OpenOffice) provide free open-source software packages that are popular alternatives to Microsoft Office. They are both good tools and highly compatible with Excel.

Vertex42 focuses on Excel, so people may not know that we offer 100+ free templates for OpenOffice and LibreOffice as free .ods file downloads , including calendar templates , schedules, financial calculators, budgets, invoices, checklists, and many others.

OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice use the OpenDocument Format for Office Applications (a.k.a. ODF), an XML-based file format. What does that mean? Well, for spreadsheets , it means that the files are going to end in the .ods extension . Documents like letters and resumes use the .odt extension .

Download Button for OpenOffice Template

.ODS File Download Button

If you are looking specifically for OpenOffice templates or LibreOffice templates, browse Vertex42 and look for the button or link on Vertex42's template pages labeled "OpenOffice," such as the button shown in the image on the right. These will be .ods files.

If we DON'T have a separate .ods download, then 9 times out of 10 the Excel file is going to open just fine in OpenOffice and LibreOffice anyway.

The best way to find a complete list of our spreadsheet templates is to browse the Excel Templates page. You'll also find numerous document templates via our Word Templates page.

If you find a template that you'd like to use and there isn't a .ods download and the Excel file does NOT work in OpenOffice, please let me know (you can comment below or shoot me an email ).

I am just suprised with all the various things that I found available by VERTEX42. Thank you.

I downloaded the blood pressure chart for OO and have entered three days worth of data, but there’s no trend line showing on the chart. Is there a “Calc” button or Function key sequence I’m supposed to click?

You might have to adjust the x-axis (or y-axis) scaling if the data is not showing in the chart.

How do I get the perpetual-calendar.ods to download and SAVE to my computer rather than opening? I am unable to do anything with the web file that opens. There is no save as option either. It also will not allow me to scrol up to see the first 5 rows of the spreadsheet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hi there, didn’t find what i was looking for on your website but thought you might just like to know what it was! a libreoffice/open office monthly photo calendar. (i appreciate you’re predominantly an excel-ent site). hmmm, and i’d like to put smaller photos in the unused calendar spaces too! regards, PtB

@PtB … There are links to OpenOffice versions of a monthly photo calendar template on this page: https://www.vertex42.com/calendars/photo-calendar.html

would love a template for putting together a portfolio of stocks/Bonds to achieve a balance and total.

@Ed, Thank you for the suggestion. An investment portfolio template is on my to do list, but I’ll move it up a bit higher.

how do you get a resume from libreoffice to attach to a job application?

Export the document as a PDF file then upload it to application

I have used Visio to design buildings and do electrical drawings. Now that I have Linux. can someone point me to .odt templates which might be similar?

@Charlie … See the following page that talks about the drawing tools in OpenOffice: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Impress_Guide/The_Drawing_toolbar As for templates, you might be able to find some created for Excel and then open them in OpenOffice. Google it. :-)

Trying to find an Access or Base template for a small business. Customers, who have multiple assets, and repairs on those assets. The closest I could think of is customer, multiple computers, repairs on those computers or customer, car or cars, repair and maintenance. A table for parts would be good, as well as labor and sales tax.

Any chance you may have seen one? Right now my budget is just about $0. I’ve seen other templates but I have no idea how to modify. I’ve tried setting up my own and might continue on that, but I’ve run up against some walls.

Is this something you might take on?

@Mark … I don’t have any database templates right now. I would recommend asking a consultant for a quote, but you mentioned your budget is $0, so I’m afraid I don’t have any recommendations at the moment. You might want to look through the various invoice templates and inventory templates .

I came to your web page that promised “100+ Templates for OpenOffice and LibreOffice.” What did I find? NOTHING. No templates. Instead, you suggest that I look at a different part of your site for Excel templates.

I’m looking for Libre Office Base templates. If I wanted Excel templates, I wouldn’t be clicking links to sites promising Libre Office templates.

Sorry about that. The links to download the ODS versions are typically underneath the downloads for the Excel and Google Sheets versions. I’m sorry about making you search the site or browse the site, but I don’t want multiple pages describing the same template just for different versions. So, when there are different versions, they are all listed on the same page. And I definitely like Excel WAY better than OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

4/24/2022: I’m trying to find my “JANUARY to MAY, 2022, FAMILY NEWSLETTER” The first time I checked it said it was being edited??? Then I wrote two more pages, and it said there was a crash report to look at; I’m totally wasting my time trying to get a newsletter out before Mothers Day; What is going on here??

@Rosalie, Are you using a Vertex42 template? Is this related to Excel? Sometimes Excel crashes or files get corrupted for no known reason. Microsoft has articles about this type of thing: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-a-corrupted-workbook-153a45f4-6cab-44b1-93ca-801ddcd4ea53

This is just silly. It talks and talks and talks about templates and vertex42 etc etc – but NEVER tells you WHERE that is to get them.

This is a short article and the second half of the article is about how to get the templates (almost the entire Vertex42.com website consists of pages describing each template with download links), or if there aren’t separate .ods download links, then most of the Excel versions will work.

Do you have any database templates? Looking for one that deals with books and music. If you don’t have any would you know where I could look? Thank you.

Free Open Office Impress Templates

Cloud image

We have had such a strong response to our article about Open Office Impress that we have decided to convert all of our most popular PowerPoint templates across to Open Office Impress although you can now open any of our PowerPoint templates in Impress.

Please note that these free Open Office Impress templates are property of Presentation Magazine and cannot be resold or displayed on the web without permission.

These are great! Thanks for the resources.

The download for “Numbers” seems to be broken, it brings up another page. All others I checked worked, thanks.

Nice resources!! thanks !!

These are the best template i ever see. Two thumbs up!!

thanks a lot, they’re good templates 🙂

“Please note that these free Open Office Impress templates are property of Presentation Helper and cannot be resold or displayed on the web without permission.”

Then those templates are not really free. Those are proprietary even if you can freely download those. You are abusing and twisting the word free here.

There is a diference between free and open source. These templates are free for people to use in their own presentations and can be downloaded at no charge.

You will find plenty of sites that wwill charge you $24 for similar templates.

We have put a lot of work into developing the templates on this site. We’ve had a couple of people who have taken our templates and passed them off as their own work – and that is not fair.

Luckily we have a good community of users who are happy to point out where they see our templates displayed.

How do you install? Whenever I try it comes up with: The application cannot be started, The configuration service is not available, Start the setup application to repair the instillation from the CD or the folder containing the instillation packages.

??!!!?!?!?!??!?!!?

Are you able to OpenOffice? If so then you should be able to open these templates by simply using the “File Open” command .

Thanks a lot, I loved the Bluewaves template. I’d like to know what license theses files are releaseds. Are them Creative Commons?

Thanks Silveria

Glad you liked them.

The templates are not under creative commons.

They are free to use in personal and business presentations, but not to be sold on, or be redistributed in any way.

hope that helps

I can open the file, but how do I save it as a template and apply to existing presentations?

How do you save to “My Templates” inOpenOffice?

Thanks so much for the free OpenOffice.org Impress templates. They downloaded and installed seamlessly. It is also very nice that they are complete, professional looking and atractive presentations (as opposed to some fuzzy screenshot type slide with no examples of title page, bullet page, etc.). Very helpful. Thanks again.

great templates! Just download the TEMPLATE (otp) (not the impress file – its not a template) and unzip it to your home/user/.openoffice/usr/templates folder. Then open Impress and click on “Master Pages” under the tasks pane and it should show up. Again, thanks for the wonder resource!

This is good stuff. Nice work.

muchas gracias 😀

Where do you pu the template and presentation in openoffice impress. show me step by step.

Max – The easiest way is just to open the file (File > Open) and then add in some changes and save it in My Documents with a new file name. You could also put it into the same location as the other OpenOffice templates, but that is more complicated.

Excellent resources, really! Thanks a lot.

“Mike

There is a diference between free and open source. These templates are free for people to use in their own presentations and can be downloaded at no charge.”

The templates might be gratis but they aren’t free as in free software. The GNU General Public License and the Lesser GNU General Public License under which Open Office is licensed is not an “open source” license it is a “free software” license…read the license…you will not see the words “open source” anywhere in the license.

“Free software” has nothing to do with money it has to do with the rights you have as a computer user.

Great resources!!! Slick and professional

What is an .odp file? What is an .odt file? What is an .sti file? What is the difference? Which one should I download? What directory should I put it in? Or do they need to be installed? Why is there no info on these simple things on this page? Without such info the files are useless. Sheesh…

awesome templates. thank you so much for this contribution

Hmmm I downloaded the template files, imported them as the OO help said. They showed up in the Available for use pane, under Master pages but icons had no picture and did nothing to pages I tried to apply them to.

Obviously I’m to stupid to use them. I agree with one of the previous posters without instructions on how to install them they are useless to idiots like myself.

*Windows Installation*

I was having some problems too, but finally figured it out. Unzip the files, and place them in the templates folder (which was empty on my new install). In XP, it is found at: /Documents and Settings/(user)/Application Data/OpenOffice.org/3/user/template

Worked fine from here.

These rock, thanks.

cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!

😛 The easter eggs is the best template :P. Very cute, and very presantable in any situation.

Nice work! Thanks for the templates and contributing to openoffice.org.

Thank you very much. I downloaded some….all the slides are really nice..

i would like to use it for a college course and i will not reuse them as if they are mine design i just don’t like the options that power point 2007 gives to use

Without CLEAR installation instructions, these are next to useless. Good templates though just to open and view with Impress. I’m glad i’m not the only one who can’t seem to install them and I thought I knew what I was doing.

Great work! Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you for these…I can get the corporate one to open but cannot figure out how to edit where it says company logo to insert my logo nor where it says the url I cannot seem to edit that as well?

please advise…

Thank you!!

Thanks for all of these.

I like Bluewaves. Thanks

Thank you ! I have some math + AI presentation + potential graphs of all sorts. I think it could work to use the “3d graph” presentation .. Either way, thanx. Good work !

I will be using these as I prepare presentations (using Impress) for a home-school co-op class. Thank you for making these available.

“I can get the corporate one to open but cannot figure out how to edit where it says company logo”

1. go to “file” and then “open” so that you have the template opened and on screen

2. go to “view” -> “Master” -> “Slide Master” and the opened template will change so that the sections are outlined.

3. delete the “company logo” box that was added by the developer.

4. go to “insert” -> “picture” -> “from file” and find your logo file on your hard drive.

Thanks a lot! these templates are seriously nice 😀

I can’t work out for the life of me where to save them and how to make the work

thanks for these template . i need template for power or energy

thanks a lot man !!!

Wow! God bless you for posting up such lovely templates. Whoever made them is very talented and the world is lucky to have free access to this.

Thanks, bluewaves template is very nice 🙂

thanks,for this templete.you help me alot 🙂 🙂 🙂

i love this thing man its wondorfel

Excelente! me ha salvado en muchas ocaciones 100% recomendable

how do you make 1!

Ok, like everyone else I was lost as to how to use these templates and none of the other comments were working. Here’s how I finally got it to work. Save the otp file somewhere on your computer, it’s not too important where. Open Impress and click file->templates->organize. Then right click on “Presentation Backgrounds” and hit import. Find wherever you saved your template you just downloaded and there you go. Hope this helps you all.

Adam! Thank you so much! I was getting so frustrated. Thank you thank you thank you!

This is great some great stuff. I just started making small simple powerpoint videos and this site is a great resource and huge find for me. Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much… been helpping a lot!

This section describes how to set up a new presentation. The settings selected here are general: they apply to all the slides.

Planning a presentation

The first thing to do is to decide what you are going to do with the presentation. For example, putting a group of digital photos together in a presentation requires very little planning. However, using a presentation to increase the knowledge of others about your topic requires much more planning.

You need to ask and answer many questions before you begin creating a presentation. If you are not acquainted with creating presentations, the answers will be more general. Those who have created a variety of presentations in the past will want to have more specific answers.

Who is to see the presentation? How will it be used? What is the subject matter? What should be in its outline? How detailed should the outline be? Will an audio file be played? Is animation desirable? How should the transition between slides be handled? These are some of the many questions that should be asked, answered, and written down before creating the presentation. Sound and animation are more advanced topics and are explained in the Impress Guide .

Again, it is not always necessary at this point to have specific answers to every question. Making an outline is extremely important. You may already know exactly what some of the slides will contain. You may only have a general idea of what you want on some of the slides. That is alright. You can make some changes as you go. Change your outline to match the changes you make in your slides.

The important part is that you have a general idea of what you want and how to get it. Put that information on paper. That makes it much easier to create the presentation.

Using the Presentation Wizard

You can start Impress in several ways:

  • From the OOo Welcome screen, if no component is open.
  • From the system menu or the OOo Quickstarter. Details vary with your operating system; see Chapter 1 (Introducing openOffice.org) for more information.
  • From any open component of OOo. Click the triangle to the right of the New icon on the main toolbar and select Presentation from the drop-down menu or choose File > New > Presentation from the menu bar.

When you start Impress, the Presentation Wizard appears.

  • Select Empty Presentation under Type . It creates a presentation from scratch.

  • Click Next . The example below shows the Presentation Wizard step 2 as it appears if you selected Empty Presentation at step 1. If you selected From Template , an example slide is shown in the Preview box.

  • Choose a design under Select a slide design . The slide design section gives you two main choices: Presentation Backgrounds and Presentations . Each one has a list of choices for slide designs. If you want to use one of these other than <Original>, click it to select it.
  • The types of Presentation Backgrounds are shown in the example. By clicking an item, you will see a preview of the slide design in the Preview window. Impress contains three choices under Presentations : < Original >, Introducing a New Product , and Recommendation of a Strategy .
  • <Original> is for a blank presentation slide design.
  • Both Introducing a New Product and Recommendation of a Strategy have their own prepackaged slide designs. Each design appears in the Preview window when its name is clicked.
  • Select how the presentation will be used under Select an output medium. Most often, presentations are created for computer screen display. Select Screen .
  • Click Next . The Presentation Wizard step 3 appears.

  • Select the desired slide transition from the Effect drop-down menu.
  • Select the desired speed for the transition between the different slides in the presentation from the Speed drop-down menu. Medium is a good choice for now.
  • Click Create. A new presentation is created.

OpenOffice vs LibreOffice: A Detailed Comparison of Free Office Suites

Last updated on November 17th, 2023

In the world of office suites, Microsoft Office has long held the crown, but its cost can be a significant barrier, especially for those requiring multiple licenses. Enter the realm of open-source alternatives, where OpenOffice and LibreOffice shine as prominent contenders. This article delves into a comprehensive comparison of these two suites, helping you decide which might be the best fit for your needs.

Overview of Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice, a pioneer in open-source office software, offers a robust suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and databases. Compatible with a variety of operating systems including Windows, MacOS, and Linux, it’s a versatile choice for diverse environments. The suite includes Writer (word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress (presentation), Base (database), Draw (drawing), and Math (formula editing). OpenOffice enjoys widespread adoption across sectors like government, education, and IT, owing to its no-cost, unrestricted usage policy.

OpenOffice V4

Overview of LibreOffice

LibreOffice stands out as a powerful and versatile open-source suite with a user-friendly interface. Compatible across Windows, MacOS, and Linux, it mirrors many of OpenOffice’s offerings. Its suite comprises Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. LibreOffice is renowned for its regular updates and enhancements, offering a fresh and evolving user experience. The suite is especially favored for its extensive language support and dual LGPLv3/MPL licensing, which fosters a dynamic development environment.

LibreOffice

Differences Between OpenOffice and LibreOffice

OpenOffice and LibreOffice are by and large quite similar. In fact, their interface and code has many similarities. However, there are also a few differences that make one stand out from the other.

1. Mobile Versions

  • OpenOffice: Limited official mobile presence but supported by third-party apps like AndrOpen Office.
  • LibreOffice: Offers the LibreOffice Viewer for Android but lacks comprehensive mobile apps.

Comparison of OpenOffice and LibreOffice Mobile Applications

2. Android Remote

LibreOffice has an Android presentation remote by the name of LibreOffice Impress Remote . Currently, OpenOffice has no such app, and hence OpenOffice users don’t have the ability to convert their mobile phones into OpenOffice remotes.

  • LibreOffice boasts the LibreOffice Impress Remote, turning Android devices into presentation remotes.
  • OpenOffice currently lacks an equivalent feature.

Screenshot showing LibreOffice Remote for Android

3. Language Support

When it comes to language support, LibreOffice has a much wider range of supported languages as compared to OpenOffice. In fact, many of the OpenOffice supported languages have become obsolete.

language support

4. The License

One of the major differences between OpenOffice and LibreOffice includes their license. The Apache OpenOffice project has a more ‘open’ Apache License, whereas LibreOffice uses a dual LGPLv3 / MPL license. This essentially means that while LibreOffice can use the OpenOffice code, OpenOffice cannot do the same.

  • OpenOffice operates under the Apache License, offering wide freedom for developer modifications.
  • LibreOffice uses a dual LGPLv3/MPL license, allowing it to incorporate OpenOffice code but not vice versa.

Differences between LibreOffice & OpenOffice in terms of License

5. Updates and Enhancements

When it comes to the debate of OpenOffice vs LibreOffice, the latter provides more frequent updates. On the contrary, support for OpenOffice is arguably slower to make radical changes to the suite.

  • LibreOffice is known for its frequent updates, constantly introducing new features and improvements.
  • OpenOffice updates less frequently, focusing on stability and consistency.

Templates for Presentations: Evaluating OpenOffice and LibreOffice

An integral part of any office suite is its capability to handle templates, particularly for presentations. This section compares how OpenOffice and LibreOffice support presentation templates, a crucial feature for users looking to create professional-quality slideshows with minimal effort.

OpenOffice and Presentation Templates: OpenOffice offers a decent range of built-in slide templates for Impress, its presentation application. Users can easily access and customize these presentation templates to suit various presentation needs. Additionally, the OpenOffice community provides a repository of user-created templates, further enriching the options available. However, compared to LibreOffice, the variety and modernity of templates in OpenOffice might be somewhat limited. Additionally, you can download Open Source PowerPoint templates to use in OpenOffice.

LibreOffice’s Approach to Templates: LibreOffice, known for its frequent updates, also extends this dynamism to its template offerings. Impress, LibreOffice’s presentation tool, comes with a more contemporary and diverse set of pre-installed templates compared to OpenOffice. Moreover, the vibrant LibreOffice community actively contributes to a growing collection of freely downloadable templates. These community-driven templates often reflect newer design trends and offer a broader spectrum of styles and layouts.

Ease of Access and Customization: Both OpenOffice and LibreOffice allow easy access to presentation templates directly from the Impress start screen, enabling users to jump-start their presentation creation process. Customization is straightforward in both suites, allowing users to modify colors, fonts, and layouts to meet their specific presentation goals.

While both OpenOffice and LibreOffice offer comprehensive features for office productivity, LibreOffice edges ahead with its frequent updates, expansive language support, and mobile remote functionality. However, OpenOffice’s extensive third-party application support under its Apache License remains a strong point for developers and users who prefer customization. Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the environment in which you operate.

You can download both Office application suites from the links below, including portable versions.
