Last spring our whole family decided to go to a nearby park for a fun outing and a picnic at the same time. The day before the picnic we could no longer hold our excitement. We spent the entire day planning what we will do and what we will eat. Thinking about all the fun we were going to have made my heart flutter.

The next day after packing our things we left our home at 8 am. The picnic spot was about 2 hours away from our home. We had packed delicious food prepared by my mother. On our way to the picnic spot, we played “antakshari” in the car. I could not wait to reach the spot.

Finally, we were too tired to play anymore. This was the time for the most amazing part of the picnic, the food. We had brought tasty home-cooked meals from our homes. We unpacked our food and divided it among ourselves. After so many activities my hunger had increased. The food tasted tastier than usual, maybe it was because of the company of the whole family, or maybe it was because I was very hungry. After completing our lunch all of us went for a boat ride. It was my first time riding a boat. At first, I was scared but then slowly I overcame my fear and started enjoying the ride. Then around 5.00 pm, we left for home.

The memories I gathered at the family picnic are some moments I will cherish all through my life. The picnic not only provided a break from the everyday mundane life but also made me happy and allowed me to spend some quality time with my family. I hope we can plan more picnics in the future.

How to Plan the Perfect Beach Picnic & My Picnic Essentials

Bring a Good Cooler

There are many on the market, some very expensive (I’m looking at you, Yeti ), but you’re only going for the day, not an African expedition. So I usually go with a standard cooler like a Coleman with wheels.

How to Pack for Your Beach Picnic

Plastic baggies are just not going to cut it. First off, things will get smushed, and second, you don’t want to be chasing those baggies all over the beach when they blow away. While you can use Tupperware or glass containers with locking lids, to me, it seems too practical and takes some of the fun out of the adventure of picnicking. If you’ve seen some of my other picnic guides or videos you might notice this round locking container (see photo below) I have with compartments for 4 -5 different nibbles and a center area just for dips or cheese or hummus. It works like a charm. Of course, there are a variety of solutions available out there just look for things called bento boxes , and you’ll see a variety of options that will help you pack and are still quite festive for your gathering. While I’ve been known to bring a few baggies, I definitely avoid the glass containers for fear that they might get broken and leave the glass on the beach…a quick way to end a lovely day on the beach is someone stepping on sharp glass so avoid it at all costs, and besides, they tend to be heavy anyway.

What to Pack

First, you don’t want to bring items that spoil easily, like sushi, ceviche, or anything with mayonnaise. While meats and cheeses can spoil if left out, they don’t spoil as easily as fish and other food items. Keep that in mind when planning your menu. A variety of 3 types of meat, cheeses, fruits, and crackers each is a good place to start. Most of all, don’t forget the water (I’ve got some tricks for that as well, so keep reading). While I usually feel that the fruit is a nice sweet treat at the end of the picnic, some people think that dessert is a picnic essential, so you can always bring cookies. One good choice is the time-honored chocolate chip cookies …check out my recipe for one I think you’ll really like.

How to Keep it Cold Throughout the Day

While doing some research, I found that a lot of people like to pack their coolers with ice as it does double duty as a coolant, and you can add it to your glasses to keep beverages cold. I don’t know about you, but every time I try that, something nasty gets in the ice, and I certainly don’t want something weird floating in my glass of water (or whatever I might be drinking). Therefore, I rely on those handy dandy gel-filled cold packs that come in a wide variety of sizes and seem to last forever. I store them in my freezer at home, waiting to be deployed for any last-minute picnics. They last much longer than ice, and they never get anything gross into your foods or drinks. Now for the quick tip … I actually learned this from an Amazon delivery a while back. I take bottles of water, usually the smaller ones, and throw them in the freezer as well. Then when I’m prepping the picnic, I’ve got the ice packs AND the frozen water bottles that can do double duty; they keep the food cool, and at the end of the day, they provide extra water for my guests. Thank you, Amazon! I wish I’d thought of that earlier.

Cleaning Up

After you’ve taken all your Instagram and Pinterest photos and everyone has eaten, of course. Don’t forget to put the food back in the cooler so that things don’t spoil. You definitely don’t want to deal with spoilage issues.

Important Things to Remember for Your Beach Picnic

Remember where you are: It’s a beach, so it can be windy, and you will often find seagulls. So, don’t leave your picnic unattended; as you can see from my photo above, the seagulls were just waiting for us to leave, which we didn’t, and they finally lost interest and went somewhere else.
Get the food off the ground. It’s much easier to eat and less likely to get sand blown on it. I use a little campaign table that rolls up into its own bag and is just heavy enough that it doesn’t blow over. You can find things like it in camping stores. I’ve seen people bring full-on folding tables, but I like the little tables that still encourage people to sit on the picnic blanket and have a proper picnic.
Bring your own shade. If you’re having your picnic in the middle of the day, bring an umbrella or tent . Not only with it keep you from getting too much sun (please wear your sunscreen anyway), but it will also keep your food from getting too hot and gross.

Bonus tips!

Here are some quick tips I’ve learned over many picnics across countless beaches … since you might already be going to the camping store to get your little table, you might also pick up a small shovel . They used to call them entrenching tools, and you can find a decent quality one for cheap (don’t get the plastic ones) they can make setting up your beach area very fast and efficient, especially when getting that beach umbrella all setup.

Next, since carrying a large beach Umbrella is a pain in the A$$ and usually falls out of the wagon, I’ve found a simple solution. Depending on the size of your umbrella, you can get strong cases to store and transport your umbrella. If your umbrella is not too big, then look for a used tripod stand case from a photography store. They’re tough and zip up to hold heavy equipment, plus they have a lot of handles to make carrying easier.

In the end, I’ve found that the best way to picnic on the beach or anywhere else is just to “Keep it Simple”; from the decor to the food, keep it simple and easy. Opt for foods that can easily be eaten with your hands, easily packed away after you nibble for a while, and are easy to transport. When you try to get to elaborate, it actually tends to take some of the fun out of it, in my opinion. Most people will appreciate a nice simple set up, and let’s face it; they should be impressed when they see your beautiful beach blanket and a little table set with yummy goodies all shaded by the perfect beach umbrella. The whole thing will be fun, tasty, and picture-perfect.

My essential picnic bag of tricks

Here are some things that I do keep in a separate bag that are part of every picnic, and I resupply the bag after every picnic. What you would add to the list?

Trash bags just makes cleaning up so much easier to drop off on the way out with all the garbage rather than re-packing in the cooler.
Hand wipes, those little individual packets you can get at Costco
(Even if you don’t mind wiping your hands on your jeans, your guests might)
Reusable utensils
Wine stopper …because wine at a picnic is great
Champagne stopper, because champagne at a picnic is better
Soft cheese knife
Hard cheese knife
Wine opener
Melamine plates and platters because they don’t break and are easy to clean
Plastic or stainless steel re-usable drinkware

What are some useful things for the perfect beach picnic? Well, here are my Picnic Essentials:

Make sure that all of your food is in separate containers. I really love the compartmentalized container that I used in the photos; it keeps 5 different items separated but in the same container for easy transportation. It’s BPA-free plastic which is lighter than glass and non-toxic.
We recently bought a picnic table which makes picnicking on uneven services much easier. Especially if you like to take your picnic to the beach.
I also really love my insulated picnic basket. Not only does it hold cups and plates, but it has an insulated section to carry your food too. I decided to get rid of the cups and the plates because they had BPA and get my own.
I decided to go with stemless shatterproof glasses, these great melamine salad plates, and colorful napkins, and they all fit in the picnic basket.
This picnic blanket zips up to be an easy-to-carry tote, and it’s been in my life for 10+ years. I love the fact that it has a strap; this made it very easy to tote around when we lived in New York City. It also has a fair amount of padding if you’re on hard ground.
I also decided that instead of buying a picnic table cover, I would simply re-purpose one of my Turkish beach towels.
As far as food goes, I usually go with food that is easy to grab and doesn’t need utensils. Basically, I stick with finger food, like baby carrots, watermelon, cheese, prepared meats, bread, and crackers. I also usually bring some sparkling water for those that don’t drink and some lovely champagne, which happens to be Veuve Clicquot this time. Unfortunately, the Veuve Clicquot carrying case with two champagne glasses (in the photo above) is currently sold out, but I linked it to another wine/ champagne cooler below.

It is said that people rediscover themselves when they stand before the limitless sea. In our case, it was what can be called a modern version of a treasure chest. Yes, it may sound filmy and quite unbelievable, but this is what happened when last autumn we went for a picnic at the nearby beach. It was a busy week for all of us at home and so we were striving for a relaxing weekend outside the perimeter of school or office pressure and the boredom of the house. The beach is only two hours’ distance from our home. But the best part was that the beach is never crowded. Being located in an unornamented suburban area, it never attracts too many groups of tourists to penetrate the soothing silence of the area or to pollute the beautiful sight by littering everywhere. But plain and simple as it was, the sea offered an unbothered beauty to all the beholders.

We reached the beach quite early in the morning as our plan was to have breakfast on the beach. ‘We’ here consisted of my parents, my sister, my uncle, and myself. Walking towards the sea with a cup of coffee in our hands, I felt the hot fumes of it carrying the rich aroma of coffee and muddling that with the delicate scent of sand and salt water. My sister was already nagging to set up the things that we brought for playing badminton on the beach. So, my parents and uncle obliged. We did not even finish three rounds when my uncle invited another family to sit with us. Here I should note that my uncle is a very affable and cheerful person. He hardly faces any awkwardness to greet strangers and talks to them like an old friend in no time. We had noticed this family when we first arrived here. They were a girl around my age and her parents who also came to have a picnic at the seaside. My uncle met the father while buying coconuts from the little shop on the beach and now the eight of us found each other talking of lunch, weather, and of course sea.

I was not an unfriendly person either. I soon became friends with the girl and discovered that it was her first time at a beach. Naturally, her astonishment to watch the lines of waves touching the horizon was at its peak. After some time, getting permission from our parents who became busy with the arrangement of lunch, I along with my new friend and my sister went for a stroll on the beach. My new friend’s name was Sia. As we were walking along the line where the waves had made their marks by throwing themselves upon the sand again and again, Sia started searching for oyster shells on the soaked coast. The Sun was shining with all its splendor now and it placed sparkling golden crowns on the Santa Claus’s white beard like seafoam. Suddenly we noticed we had come a bit far from our picnic spot. The place was literally what solitude should demonstrate. We were just about to turn back thinking that our parents would scold us when my sister pointed something in the distance. It looked like a large old boat from where we were standing then. After a few hesitant moments, ultimately our curious steps started moving towards the unknown. Reaching there, we found that the boat was actually a launch and it was in fact so old and wrecked that we felt certain it was an abandoned one. At once the webs of fantasy worlds from books and movies floated before our young eyes and we started imagining possible incidents in and about the vessel. My sister was the first to climb into the abandoned launch. There were spider webs and dust all over the walls and wooden parts loitering on the floor. We found a private cabin on the top floor and went in. As expected, nothing much was to be seen as almost everything was too withered to be interesting. There was a locker beside the window which caught our attention. And opening it what we found, left us all agape. A beautiful small black box was there in the otherwise empty locker. I took it out to praise the intricate designs on the iron box. I asked them, "What if it is a treasure chest as we read in adventure stories?” But what I intended to tell as a joke, soon became an exciting concern. We began to think of what valuable gems could be there inside the box. Maybe a rare coral was discovered by the inhabitants of the cabin which they kept safely in the locker before drowning into the sea by a violent thunderstorm. Or maybe it was an exceptional necklace, a token of love and betrayal. While we were conjuring stories in our minds, I suddenly discovered that there was no lock on the box. So, our anticipation could soon be ended. Together we lifted the lid and what we found there outran even our wildest imagination. There in the abandoned launch into the private cabin inside the mysterious black chest were a number of oyster shells of different colors, shapes, and styles. It may be presumed that we were very much disappointed by our discovery of what we guessed to be a valuable treasure. But standing inside that silent old cabin with the left-out box of oyster shells, we felt a smile on our lips. This was a real treasure to us.

When we showed the box to our parents, they were rather discouraged by such an anticlimactic end to our adventure. But for us, finding what was inside was like Pandora opening her box. Only in the case of our box, there was no evil. As we discovered it together, there arose confusion about the possession of the box. Sia told me to keep it as the thought of treasure first came to my mind. I said, "If so, then let me give you this as a token of my friendship so that you never forget this picnic of ours in your whole life.” My sister also agreed with that. But even today we think about why the box was there and who it was. And I know Sia does that too.

Mayor Malik Evans expressed his dismay upon seeing evidence of the destruction and litter at the beach. “It’s sad that people can’t get a respite from the beach because people think it’s cool to burn picnic tables,” he said.

The picnic tables, usually located in the grassy area adjacent to Lakeshore Boulevard’s parking lots, are meant for family use and are funded by city taxpayers.

Dan Semrau, a local who frequents the beach to walk his dog, documented the bonfires, the scattered garbage, and even a trampoline that was hauled onto the beach. “They like to come down here because nobody patrols the beach and you can do whatever you want and nobody cares,” Semrau noted, highlighting the lack of enforcement in the area.

The issue was addressed with Mayor Evans during the announcement of a new anti-littering initiative, Respect Rochester. The mayor condemned the irresponsible actions, stating, “What you showed me, the picnic tables and the litter, that’s not respecting Rochester. And it’s just wanton destruction for no reason.”

In response to concerns over the lack of police patrols, Mayor Evans suggested working with both county and city authorities to potentially increase surveillance and enforcement at Durand Eastman Beach.

Mayor Evans encourages anyone with information to make an anonymous call to the city’s 311 service to report it.

A photographer's empathy.

On January 16, Dmitry Markov , 41, known for his depiction of everyday Russia through smartphone photography, died in Pskov. Markov was a recipient of the esteemed Russian photo competition Serebrynaya Kamera ("Silver Camera"), the Getty Images Instagram Grant, and the author of the photobook Chernovik (" Draft ").

"The place that Dima occupied in our photography was completely empty before his appearance. I can't recall anyone who photographed Russia with such affection and authenticity," said publisher Leonid Gusev .

Born in Pushkino , Moscow Oblast, Markov honed his craft under the tutelage of Alexander Lapin, a prominent Russian photographer and educator. He contributed his talents as a photographer and journalist for the newspaper Argumenty i Fakty ("Arguments and Facts") and collaborated with independent publications such as Meduza and Takie Dela .

After joining Instagram in 2012, Markov embraced the concept of David Alan Harvey's Burn Diary project, exclusively utilizing a mobile phone, and only posting images on the day they were taken.

Markov's signature style culminated in his participation in the 2016 iPhone 7 advertising campaign "Taken on the iPhone," marking him as the first Russian contributor among 15 photographers from around the world.

He focused on life in Russian locations that are distant from urban centers, and on marginalized communities, including the homeless , correctional school alumni , substance users , individuals with disabilities , and prisoners . Despite criticism alleging that he offered a bleak portrayal of Russian life, Markov defended his focus on the gritty details, citing his empathy for those facing hardship, which was rooted in his upbringing in impoverished conditions and his journey overcoming substance abuse.

Markov also documented protests , capturing poignant moments, such as a 2021 photograph depicting a police officer clad in uniform and a balaclava beneath a portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin, symbolic of the repression against dissenters in the way of Alexei Navalny's arrest. Recognizing the impact of his work, Markov auctioned the popular photograph to support an organization aiding political prisoners (it brought in over $21,000).

Markov also documented the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including scenes of Russian military departures. One of Markov's final images showed a Russian war participant in Alexandrov, Moscow region, concealing his face while reflecting on the horror of witnessing death.

Dmitry Markov's indelible contributions to photography offer a poignant testament to his empathy, capturing the essence of Russia with sincerity and compassion.
