Lehigh University Psychology - Grad Students

Complete a Graduate Degree in Psychology - with specialties in Cognitive, Developmental and Social Psychology The Graduate Program in Psychology at Lehigh University is a selective, research-intensive program that focuses on Cognitive, Developmental and Social Psychology—and our faculty and students often work at the intersection of these areas.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact members of the faculty with whom they would be interested in working.  Visit our websites - and send us an email!!

The department accepts mainly Ph.D. students, who obtain a master’s degree in the process of working for the doctorate. But every year a few well-qualified students may also be accepted for a Master of Science degree. Ph.D. and M.S. students define an area of specialization through their research experiences and selection of graduate seminars (see Program Requirements for greater detail).

The Psychology Department at Lehigh University is a research-intensive department where graduate students and faculty work collaboratively within and across three areas: cognitive, developmental, and social psychology. See Areas of Specialization and individual faculty and graduate students’ web pages for more detail about current research activities in the department. In addition, we often work closely with researchers from other departments, programs, and colleges, including the Health, Medicine and Society Program, the Cognitive Science Program, as well as the Colleges of Business and Education.  Many labs also collaborate with researchers at other institutions.

Our doctoral students are supported financially (with stipend and tuition) throughout their time in the program.  To learn more about us, please see the Program Description links to the left.  For general information about graduate study in the College of Arts and Sciences, visit the College Graduate Studies page.

Flexibility

All COH graduate classes are offered online and in-person, providing students options that fit into today's busy schedules.  The MPH and MS in Population Health have full-time and part-time options.  The Flex MBA and Graduate Certificates are ideal for working professionals.

*International students who elect to participate in person must be enrolled as full-time students with a minimum of 9 credits.

Lehigh University's Master of Public Health (MPH) degree prepares graduate students to work in a variety of local, state, national, and global public health research, practice, and policymaking settings. Students gain expertise in the core domains of public health, investigate and address the determinants of health using data science, and develop novel and effective avenues for disease prevention and health promotion. The program combines foundational courses in public health with additional courses in data science, qualitative research methods, leadership, cultural understanding and health, and policymaking. Students gain knowledge and skills through coursework, experiential learning opportunities, research projects, and engagement with traditional and non- traditional partners to pursue a healthier world.

The College of Health is preparing for CEPH accreditation. Once accreditation is received, it applies retroactively. At that point, all graduates from the College's MPH will have graduated from a CEPH-accredited institution.

  • The quintessential degrees for gaining expertise in both public health and business

Public Health Leaders Create Impact

The 1-MBA/MPH Dual Degree will develop you into a career advocate for sound and effective health policy and place you as a key stakeholder at the convergence of science, education, innovation, and policy. You will gain expertise in the core domains of public health, investigate and address the determinants of health using data science, and develop novel and effective avenues for disease prevention and health promotion.

Business Experience Meets Policy-Making

In 18 months, you will earn both an MBA and an MPH. The Lehigh 1-MBA/MPH merges opportunity, rigor, and speed for professionals ready to pivot in their careers and reach new levels. This unique program allows you to leverage the experience and acumen of your own personalized four-person mentoring team. Our externship project immersion that's part of a consulting practicum, and our public health capstone/field experience will maximize your potential and turn your career aspirations into reality.

The Lehigh University 1-MBA/MPH Dual Degree program is ideal for those interested in advancing their careers in Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, Occupational Health, and Health Care.

A Dedicated Mentoring Team

You will be assigned a mentoring team prior to arriving on campus. Your Personalized Team of advisors include:

  • 1-MBA and MPH  Program Faculty Advisors – Your Academic Guides to Program Success
  • Industry Executive Advisor  – Your Access to Building New Networks
  • Career Coach – To Build Your Personal Brand & Help Set Your Career Goals

Your mentor team is specifically focused on your professional goals and career aspirations. They will not only serve as mentors, they will assist you with professional development opportunities. Your successful completion of the 1-MBA/MPH is a major priority of your Mentoring Team.

The MBA Consulting Practicum

The MBA Consulting Practicum will introduce you to fundamental consulting skills and provide knowledge, training, and development through relevant activities and experiences. Our EXTERNSHIP series company projects transition you into substantive, practical experiences by having you serve in a consulting capacity on real company projects. You will be tackling real world problems to gain the hands-on experience employers seek in the graduating MBA candidates they recruit.

With consideration of your industry interest and skill set, you will be placed on a team of 3-4 people and paired with a series of company projects. You will have various deliverables throughout the program while keeping in close contact with the company client and being guided by your Faculty instructor.

MBA Capstone Unifying Experience and Professional Development

The 1-MBA includes a capstone experience that enables students to integrate learning across the entire program curriculum.

There are varying opportunities for Professional Development to ensure you get the most out of your MBA experience

The goal of the Capstone Learning Professional Development and Global Immersion experiences is to prepare you for unprecedented challenges and set you on your way to life-long success.

The MPH Applied Practice Experience/Capstone

As part of the MPH degree, all students must complete an Applied Practice Experience (APE). This is a supervised learning experience that connects the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom with the practice of public health. The APE provides students with opportunities to develop and refine problem-solving skills through the application of public health theories and methods in the field. It also allows students to explore career options and strengthen their network of public health professionals.

The Capstone is another required component of the MPH degree. In consultation with a faculty advisor, students select foundational and concentration-specific competencies relevant to the student’s educational and professional goals. The Capstone represents a culminating experience where the student produces a high-quality written product in which they synthesize information from their coursework with original research in public health.

Unique Curriculum Approach

You’ll begin with a series of core, foundational courses that will prepare you in the business fundamentals starting with Project Management. From there, you will begin to focus on courses taught from the stakeholder perspective. Societal shift courses are interwoven throughout the program and are designed to enable you to grapple with macro-level issues and challenges that affect businesses on a global scale. Throughout the One-year program, The Consulting Practicum’s EXTERNSHIP series projects are designed to fully immerse you with hands-on experiential learning. The 1-MBA curriculum culminates with experiencing full integration of your knowledge in the Capstone Course. This unique curriculum approach provides you with a framework for navigating the business landscape throughout the course of your career.

During your first Spring semester, you will take foundational courses in public health, which include courses on epidemiology, health data and computational science, and health services, administration, politics, and policy. In the following semesters you will be given additional training in methods, and will take additional courses that refine your capacity to evaluate public health policies and interventions. As with the MBA component of the joint degree, the College of Health MPH curriculum incorporates different forms of experiential learning. Along with more traditional fieldwork opportunities, many of your courses will involve the use of real world data, and will provide opportunities for you to conduct analysis that you will share with public health professionals and policy makers.

If you are a professional looking for a unique program that will enable you to confidently pivot in your health career with the best tools and opportunities, the Lehigh 1-MBA/MPH program is the ideal fit.

Take the Next Step

College of Arts and Sciences

Graduate program.

Lehigh University, founded in 1865, is consistently ranked among the top universities in the United States. The University and the Department of History are proud to attract small, excellent cohorts of graduate students from all parts of the US and the world. The History graduate program offers training in preparation for a career in research and teaching as well as non-academic pursuits. The overarching theme of the program is Transnational History. Instruction and research advising related to this theme are offered by growing and dynamic faculty over a wide range of geographical regions and chronological periods. Coursework focuses on historiographical analysis and historical research methods.

The Department welcomes applications for both the PhD and MA programs. The PhD program prepares students for research and teaching in universities and colleges, as well as a variety of other careers, including work in museums, historical societies, journalism, government, and non-profits. The MA is designed to be a generalist degree that can prepare students for a number of careers or for more advanced graduate work. Former MA graduates work in a variety of areas including university education, secondary education, public history, library services, business, and government. The program provides training for those seeking to teach global, transnational US, Atlantic World, European, African, Middle Eastern or Latin American histories at the secondary or community college level, as well as for those who will continue on to doctoral studies and a career in research and college level teaching. Students initially admitted to the MA program at Lehigh must undergo a separate review process if they wish to pursue the PhD.

Prospective PhD students are encouraged to identify specific fields of interest and faculty members with whom they would like to work. At the PhD level, students should consider department strengths in the following areas:

  • British, French and Spanish Atlantic World Empires
  • Modern China
  • European Intellectual History
  • Latin America and the Caribbean
  • West Africa and the Atlantic African Diaspora
  • Holocaust, Genocide, Human Rights, and Immigration Histories
  • 20th century US and the World
  • African-American History
  • Ottoman Empire and the Islamic World
  • Colonial America and the Early American Republic
  • Native American History
  • Gender History

Students applying to the PhD program should consult individual faculty web pages to learn more about faculty research specialties and determine specific mentorship opportunities.

Not all fields may be accessible in a given admissions year. At present, opportunities for the doctoral study of British colonial America are very limited and opportunities for the doctoral study of the early US republic and Native American history are unavailable for the coming academic year. In all cases, potential applicants should contact potential faculty advisors directly if they have questions about the possibility of working in a related research field. They may also contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Nitzan Lebovic ( [email protected] ).

What is Transnational History?

Transnational history has emerged in recent years as an umbrella term for a variety of approaches that seek to capture dynamic change over time in ways that go beyond traditional historiographies bounded by national frameworks. Transnational History aims to put national developments in broader regional and global context, and to explain them in terms of cross-national influences as well as local causes. Transnational history may also consider the dissemination, circulation, and evolution of ideas, people, commodities, material culture, and spiritual practices in relation to changing political and social dynamics and fluid cultural identities, including national, religious, racial and gender identities. As such, Transnational approaches have influenced cutting edge scholarship across many scholarly subfields and are reshaping the teaching of basic survey courses in US history, World history and beyond.

Applications and Financial Awards

Successful PhD applicants will normally be offered five years of tuition waiver and stipend support drawn from a combination of fellowships and teaching assistantships. These awards are made conditional upon the maintenance of good academic standing. Doctoral students will also be able to apply for additional funding to support scholarly activities such as travel to archives and conferences. In the later years of doctoral study, students will also be eligible for additional, competitive fellowship support and teaching and internship opportunities. Successful MA applicants may be offered tuition support and/or teaching assistantships when they are available.

The review of graduate applications for Fall semester admission begins on 15 January each year. All application materials must be uploaded on Lehigh's   online application system . Complete applications received on or before 15 January will receive full consideration. Applications received after that date may also be considered if there are available slots. Please direct questions about the graduate program to the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Nitzan Lebovic ( [email protected] ). Technical questions about the application system should be directed to the Department Coordinator, Ellen Lewis ( [email protected] ).

The most important elements of the application in the review process are:

  • The personal statement, which details the student’s interest in pursuing graduate study in history.
  • The applicant's academic transcripts, with special importance attached to the student’s performance in history and related subjects.
  • Recommendation letters from two or three faculty mentors who can speak to the applicant's potential for graduate work in the discipline. One of these letters may come from a former employer or non-academic mentor if the letter speaks to related skill sets the applicant may possess.
  • GRE scores, which are required for the PhD application, are rarely the determining element in an application file. A strong performance on the Verbal section of the GRE is most important.
  • A relevant writing sample that demonstrates the ability to write clearly, intelligently, and persuasively with recourse to research. The sample may be drawn from a thesis or a seminar or research paper completed for a recent course. Submissions should be limited to twenty pages (excluding notes and bibliography).
