Volume 7 ( NOW AVAILABLE ) Hephaistus on the Athenian Acropolis Current Approaches to the Study of Artifacts Made of Bronze and Other Metals

research paper ancient architecture

edited by Nassos Papalexandrou & Amy Sowder Koch The study of bronzes and other metals from the Acropolis traditionally has been overshadowed by the emphasis given to monuments of architecture and sculpture. This volume positions itself against this tradition by resuscitating discussion on the Acropolis bronzes. The introduction reflects on the history of the relevant scholarship vis-à-vis the life of the Acropolis bronzes in various collections in Greece and elsewhere. The six essays provide overviews, reinterpretations, and critical discussions as well as new meth-odological approaches to various aspects of the existing corpus. Harris-Cline employs Actor-Network theory to showcase the in-tricate web of social relationships underlying the deposition of bronzes on the Acropolis. Makres and Scafuro detail their efforts to produce a new critical edition of the corpus of inscriptions on bronzes. Sowder Koch revisits the corpus of hydriai. Sarcone focuses on tripod-cauldrons whereas Papalexandrou discusses the corpus of griffin cauldrons. Karakitsou publishes a fascinat-ing inscribed phiale recently retrieved from the southwestern entablature of the Parthenon.

Volume 6 Roman Sculpture in Context

research paper ancient architecture

edited by Peter D. De Staebler and Anne Hrychuk Kontokosta This volume tackles a pressing issue in Roman art history: that many sculptures conventionally used in our scholarship and teaching lack adequate information about their find locations. Questions of context are complex, and any theoretical and methodological reframing of Roman sculpture demands academic transparency. This volume is dedicated to privileging content and context over traditions of style and aesthetics. Through case studies, the chapters illustrate multivariate ways to contextualize ancient objects. The authors encourage Roman art historians to look beyond conventional interpretations; to reclaim from the study of Greek sculpture the Roman originals that are too often relegated to discussions of “copies” and “models”; to consider the multiple, dynamic, and shifting contexts that one sculpture could experience over the centuries of its display; and to recognize that postantique receptions can also offer insight into interpretations of ancient viewers. The collected topics were originally presented in three conference sessions: “Grounding Roman Sculpture” (Archaeological Institute of America, 2019); “Ancient Sculpture in Context” (College Art Association, 2017); and “Ancient Sculpture in Context II: Reception” (College Art Association, 2019).

Volume 5 Emperors in Images, Architecture, and Ritual Augustus to Fausta

edited by Francesco de Angelis This volume presents current research on a variety of questions related to Roman emperors’ uses of images and architecture. Drawing mainly on sculpture, coinage, and architecture, the papers consider topics ranging from the beard of Nero to Antonine funeral pyres to the roles of arches in shaping urban landscapes. Chronologically, the volume covers the reigns of Augustus through Constantine, and it examines the use of imagery by empresses as well as emperors. The contributors are Fae Amiro, Steven Burges, Laura L. Garofalo, Evan Jewell, Lillian Joyce, Jacob A. Latham, and Rosa Maria Motta, Gretel Rodriguez.

Volume 4 Collecting and Collectors: From Antiquity to Modernity

research paper ancient architecture

edited by Alexandra Carpino, Tiziana D’Angelo, Maya Muratov and David Saunders This volume is a timely exploration of many facets of collecting and collectors. It brings together sixteen papers originally presented in two colloquia and a workshop at the Archaeological Institute of America’s 2017 Annual Meeting in Toronto. Part 1, “Collecting and Presenting the Etruscans in North America” focuses on a select number of collecting narratives that demonstrate how the art and material culture of a then little-known Italic culture made its way to the United States during the mid- to late 19th and early 20th centuries. Part 2, “Satis sit una aliqua gemma: Collecting Classical Gem from Antiquity through the 19th Century,” explores the significance that collecting antique gems acquired across time and space, as well the reasons why these objects remained highly valued and sought-after collectibles from antiquity to the modern era. Part 3, “Researching Ownership Histories for Antiquities in Museum Collections,” draws attention to discoveries that have been made through provenance research, and also to the challenges that shape the investigation of provenance.

Volume 3 What Shall I Say of Clothes? Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to the Study of Dress in Antiquity

research paper ancient architecture

edited by Megan Cifarelli and Laura Gawlinski The essays in this volume engage explicitly in a variety of theoretical and methodological strategies for the interpretation of dress, dressed bodies, and their representations in the ancient world. Focusing on personal ornaments, portraiture, and architectural sculpture, the collected papers investigate the visual, somatic, and semantic significance of the act of getting dressed, what it meant to be dressed in various ways, and how dress contributed to and shaped identities in antiquity. Authors draw from a wide range of disciplinary frameworks, integrating literary and archaeological evidence, experimental archaeology, social theory and the study of iconography.

This volume spans a broad area both geographically and chronologically, bringing the ancient Near East into dialogue with the classical world from prehistory through late antiquity. The breadth and inclusivity of this volume provide a strong theoretical and methodological foundation for the collaborative study of the dynamic role of dressed bodies and images that depict them. Contributors are Emma L. Baysal, Eric Beckmann, Ayse Bursali, Alexis Q. Castor, Megan Cifarelli, Laura Gawlinski, Maura Heyn, Neville McFerrin, Kiersten Neumann, Hadi Özbal, Rana Özbal, Josephine Verduci, Alissa Whitmore, Elizabeth Wueste, and Baris Yagci.

Volume 2 The Consumer’s Choice: Uses of Greek Figure-Decorated Pottery

edited by Thomas H. Carpenter, Elizabeth Langridge Noti, and Mark D. Stansbury O’Donnell As published excavated contexts become more plentiful and as older contexts are reexamined, it has become increasingly possible to consider Greek figure-decorated pottery from the perspective of its use. The essays in this volume explore the relationship between image and use in different contexts, with an emphasis on the user and consumer-that is, they explore the possible meanings images had for the individuals who obtained the objects on which they appear. The essays pose questions concerning why a consumer might choose a particular pot, why it might be part of an assemblage, or why a particular set of pots might have moved in a particular direction. The contributors are Sheramy D. Bundrick, An Jiang, Kathleen M. Lynch, Bice Peruzzi, Vivi Sarapanidi, Tara Trahey, and Vicky Vlachou.

Volume 1 Beyond Iconography: Materials, Methods, and Meaning in Ancient Surface Decoration

research paper ancient architecture

edited by Sarah Lepinski and Susanna McFadden This volume presents a spectrum of current research on ancient surface decoration (painting mosaic, and stuccowork/plasterwork) that offers new avenues of exploration and directions of inquiry. The collected essays draw from a wide range of disciplinary frameworks and integrate material analysis, the study of technical characteristics, the investigation of literary and archaeological evidence, and the interpretation and reconstruction of iconographic programs. Geographically, the papers focus on paintings from the Mediterranean world, including examples from the Bronze Age Aegean, the Hellenistic Levant, and Roman Campania and Greece. Exciting work on Classical Maya paintings in Guatemala augment the case studies from the Mediterranean region and provide an important opportunity for cross-cultural comparisons of ancient artistic and cultural practices as well as modern analytical approaches. By offering a wide chronological and geographic panorama, this volumes expands existing research on ancient surface decoration and aims to secure a broad and variable foundation for continued work

Temple architecture of ancient Assam: A study based on epigraphic and architectural remains

Profile image of Rumi Patar

Temple plays an important role in the socio-religious activities of the people of Assam since ancient period. Therefore the rulers of ancient Assam built many temples dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses. The history of Assam mainly started from the time of Varmans. It is from the the time of Varman ruler Surendra Varman that temple building activities started which seems to be coincided with the Gupta style. The rulers of three dynasties of ancient Assam i.e., Varmans, Salasthambha and Palas constructed many temples. However at present there is no any standing temple of the said period. Only the material remains and epigraphic sources are the evidences through which possible form of temple can be presumed. The present study aims to study the temple architecture of ancient Assam based on epigraphic and material remains. Key words: Archaeology, architecture, temple, epigraphic

This volume is a study of the beginning and evolution of temple architecture in India which covers sculptures and carvings as well. With over a hundred plates of temples and carvings on them including cave facades and pillar depictions it deals with temples constructed by the different ancient and medieval dynasties in Indian history particularly the early western Calukyan and later western Calukyans Pallava Pandya, Cola Hoyasala and Nayaka with illustrations that include maps plans of caves and even viharas and caityas it undertakes a study of the temples found in different states of India. The research discusses the variations in plans and elevations to examine development of temple architecture over time and new experiment actions in the building of temples by use of various materials. Reconstructing art and architectural styles from the remnants of the ruined temples in many places it explains terms and concepts in temple building and architecture and cites examples of various temple style and traditions including the best and earliest ones. The focus is on the Dravida and Nagara temple styles and a third hybrid form of sikhara that developed in the Deccan. Many Jaina temples are also covered.

Bratatee Barman

A large number of religious monuments from this period are spread across the state (Choudhury 2013). However, nothing is known of firstly, the neighbouring habitation sites. Secondly, the regional network of such sites. Much of the archaeological research in Assam is mainly single-site oriented, and art historical methods are often used for to study such sites. As a result the early medieval structures or monuments remain isolated features in the landscape sans context in regards to its immediate surroundings. Documentation of more settlements of this period and studying their characteristics and their connection to other neighbouring sites is the key to comprehensively understanding the early medieval history of Assam. Having felt such a need, this small scale, independent, surface survey project was carried out across nine modern villages around the archaeological site of Sri Surya Pahar (SSP) in Goalpara district, western Assam. The main aim of this project was to explore the immediate surroundings of Sri Surya Pahar site (SSP site) and document the visible archaeological features and examine the potential of this area for future projects.

Early medieval Indian history spanning between eighth to thirteenth century A.D. is characterized by the formation of states and regional empires, articulation of regionalism and regional traditions, and emergence and growth of regional cultural units such as Andhra, These transformations brought about in the Regional and Pan-Indian context in regard to the cultural practices and institutions were essentially due to the material changes in the society. One of the significant development in the cultural practice was the consolidation of regional cults and building of the temples to accommodate large number of deities who have already entrenched themselves thoroughly in the social and religious fabric of the regions. Temple building activity of the early medieval India was not only associated with the practices, institutions and symbols that had emerged in the regional contexts, but also closely linked " to the formation of regional kingdoms and were used by regional dynasties for their legitimation, consolidation of their resource base and for forging linkages for social integration across communities. " 1 The concept of Temple originated centuries back most probably during the vedic period with the idea of God perceived in human forms. such a form warranted a habitation, a shelter and this need resulted in structural edifices. " 2 Thus the Temples came in to existence with the obvious purpose of providing accommodation to innumerable number of duties that emerged during the course of the evolution of Brahmanical Hinduism and also to their devotees for paying obeisance and carrying out ablutions. Indian Temples were symbolizing without doubt the very ethos and vibrations of the life style of the people across the subcontinent through the millennia. The panorama of Indian Temple architecture are visible at extremely wide chronological and geographical horizons. From a very modest beginning at sanchi in the fifth century A.D. to the magnificence of the gigantic edifices of Kanchi, Tanjavur, Madurai, Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark, it traversed across long distances offering wider dimensions and variables both in art forms and structures. Various ancient shilpashastras dealing with the subject of temple architecture such as Mayamata, Manasara, Shilparatna, Kamikagama, Kashyapashilpa and Ishanagurudeva Paddhati provided us valuable information about geographical distribution, differentiation from the point of view of shapes presiding deities, caste associations and ornamentation of the temples etc.

The origin of the word “Assam” is a blurry line. In line with few historians the term had come into use after the arrival of the Tai Ahoms. The state Assam is located in the north-east region of India. Previously it was popularly known as Pragjyotisa-Kamrupa. Basically, inscription is a collected works of ‘wordlists’ maintained or recommended by the Forum on Information Standards in Heritage. It highlights tools for broad and consistent indexing of different aspects of the built and buried heritage. The very term of inscription implies any literary record imprinted on some permanent or semi-permanent materials, viz. stone, metal, wood, clay, ivory, plaque, etc. It has noteworthy collective and artistic importance.

Vasu Renganathan

The origin of the curvilinear superstructure in the Indian temple has been the subject of inquiry in the works of Indian temple architecture and it still remains a mystery to be proven, despite a number of solutions given based on scriptures and guesses. The principal reason for this ignorance, according to Simpson, is owing to the absence of monuments representing the steps by which the Hindu temple was developed to its complete form. 1 However, Chandra states that Coomaraswamy was the first to interpret the Hindu temple not only as a building providing shelter for the image and the worshippers but also as the image of the cosmos, the house of God and also his body. It represents in its parts the drama of disintegration and reintegration which is the essential theme of Indian myth and its ritual enactment in the sacrifice. 2

THE RUBRIC OF HINDU TEMPLE ARCHITECTURAL STYLES: A Study of the Evolutional Diversity in Typological Idioms

Kiran Bettadapur

Local traditions govern temple architectural typologies; often, structural styles and building methods were progressively blended depending on congregation of experts and promotion of construction activity. While the texts enumerate many nuances in temple architectural styles, only about twenty-odd types dominate the landscape. Early natural caves and frescoed caverns, inspired by Buddhist prayer halls, evolved to rock-cut caves, which progressively incorporated iconographic objects and sculptures. The form evolved from simple, functional structures to imposing, magnificent buildings, which indicate progression of elaboration of and opulence in rituals― it reflects complexities in symbolism too. Local materials and influences determined regional preferences for designs, which evidence mutual inductance and overlapping of styles. This paper documents the diverse and numerous Hindu temple architecture styles based on not only the designs and traditions that are more recurrently featured in ancient texts, but also the exemplars and archetypes that are most commonly observed in ancient temple structures.

Each epoch possesses a discernible construction methodology that is inherently unique and emblematic of the prevailing ideologies, cultural progress, artistic inclinations, and architectural prowess of its particular civilization. From a nuanced standpoint, Hindu Temples stand out as embodiments of knowledge, artistic brilliance, architectural magnificence, and cultural legacy, symbolizing the pinnacle of building technology in the ancient Indian subcontinent. The timeless principles and customs of Indian Temples go beyond historical boundaries, echoing deeply in the present context, thereby sustaining the flexibility of traditional Indian values and wielding a significant effect on the socio-economic tapestry of society. This scholarly work delves into the intricacies of temple styles, design principles, geometric configurations, structural systems, and the intricate construction technologies intrinsic to Indian temples. The exposition meticulously unfolds the distinctive architectural styles and elements inherent in Hindu Temples. Furthermore, a comprehensive elucidation of the geometric design principles that underscored Indian temple construction is expounded upon within this discourse. The paper meticulously delineates the construction technology, commencing with the meticulous assembly of adept teams, through the stages of meticulous planning and intricate carving, and culminating in the seamless assembly of individual components.

Archaeology in Northeast India Recent Trends and Future Prospects Essays Celebrating 150 Years of Research

Several ancient remains dating back to the historical period and the early medieval period dot the Northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura. The available archaeological and historical sources suggest existence of advanced agrarian cultures on the Brahmaputra River valley (Sharma 2005), which left traces of monumental structures, from the beginning of the Common Era. Such construction ranges from the monolithic stone stupas of Sri Surya Pahar, Assam (IAR 1992), brick stupas of Vedagokuguri, Meghalaya (Sharma 1993) and Shyam Sundar, Tripura (IAR 2002) to the brick temples of Na Nath (Assam) and stone temple remains of Malinithan, Arunachal Pradesh (IAR 1972).However, our knowledge of the development process of such cultures in Northeast India is still limited. Our understanding of the material cultural developments, transition from a non-literary to a literary society, phases of art and architectural developments, religious transmission, intra and inter- regional trade and communications is still at naissance. This paper explores the trends in the existing archaeological research and discusses scope of certain methods for future archaeological investigations.

How to Write a Research Paper on Architecture

post updated 10 February 2024

Architecture is widely considered one of the most challenging degrees you can choose. Some people go as far as comparing it to a medical degree in terms of the workload and difficulty. If you know someone who studies architecture, you have probably heard about many deadlines, all-nighters, and 18-hour work days. How to Write a Research Paper on Architecture Design

While some architecture schools are more focused on practical tasks, others may dedicate more attention to research and writing. Whether you have to write research papers on architecture on a weekly basis or just once in a while, this article will help you do it in the best way possible. Why not visit this page .

Determine the scale of your project

Architecture is a very wide field. There are dozens different jobs in the field, hundreds of architectural styles, and millions of niches you can get into in your research paper. That’s why it’s important to keep the scale of your project in mind and make sure you go into just the right amount of detail.

If you are struggling to choose a topic that would work well, consider reaching out to paper writing services so that professional architecture writers can help you. To choose the best service, try looking for a review from students’ who have used the service before. For example, a Paperhelp review can help you decide if the service is right for you.

If you choose a topic that’s too wide, you’ll have a hard time getting your point across. On the other hand, if your topic is too narrow, you might not be able to find enough information about it on the Internet. To prevent that from happening, always do some preliminary research to determine how many sources are available.

Choose your analysis type

In architecture, research papers usually focus on one of the three types of research — visual research, textual analysis, or historical analysis. Visual research is, perhaps, the most interesting and the most creative part of the research. Look at the space and try to think what it reminds you of, how does it make you feel, what impression does it create, etc. If you’re writing a more in-depth paper, textual analysis might be necessary. In order to understand a more complex content or a narrow niche, study the research of people who have looked at it before.

Try to figure out where the writer is coming from, what are their references, inspirations, or goals. If socioeconomic context is important for your topic, do some historical analysis as well. It will help you better understand the buildings, their details, and their significance. If you are analyzing a particular style or movement, looking at different movements that were prominent at that time will give you a better perspective. You might want to focus on one particular analysis type or combine several types. Before making the decision, consider what is the goal of your paper and what type of analysis can help you reach it.

Have a logical structure

Once you’ve chosen your topic, your sources, and your analysis type, you should consider the structure of your paper. Normally, you would start with a short introduction that would give the reader some background information regarding why you choose that topic, what research have you done, and what was your main question or idea. After that, map out your paper in a way so that it makes sense to someone who doesn’t know anything about your topic.

You might want to start with some background information and present some key theory points or describe the time period that you are dealing with. Then you can proceed to more details and your observations of the object. In the conclusion, briefly summarize the main points and findings of your research and give your own opinion on the subject.

When it comes to academic writing, it’s important to be concise. Remember, your research paper is not a magazine article, so you shouldn’t add any fluff, poetic phrases, or your personal sentiments. Stir away from emotionally colored words and sentences such as “a magnificent building” or “I love how(…)” If you are particularly impressed with some aspect of your research subject, explain what makes it stand out among others, highlight the complexity of the structure, or point out why it was so important.

That way, you will express your admiration in a more appropriate manner. Try not to use very long sentences too. Although they might sound natural in your head, the reader will find it much easier to follow your train of thought when the sentences are shorter. Of course, remember not to use any colloquialisms, slang, or contractions.

Say what you think

As we’ve mentioned before, a research paper is not an article or a blogpost, so it cannot be based solely on your personal opinion. However, architecture is a creative field. It’s creativity that attracts people to the field and what is valued most in an architect. That’s why in your research paper, you shouldn’t just paraphrase the opinions of other people and leave it at that. Always include your personal perspective and your opinion on why something is the way it is or how it could have been done differently.

THE RELATION OF MAJAPAHIT TEMPLES WITH VASUSASTRA-MANASARA

Abstract- Vastusastra is a text which discusses Indian architecture which is published in several books, included Manasara. Vastusastra contains guidline for building Indian construction, including religious building such as temples. Although the narrative was made for the construction of temples in India, it turns out that there are some elements in vastu that also found in Mataram Kuno temples. This raises questions about the relationship of Indian architecture with Majapahit, which was the era after Ancient Mataram, given the Hindu-Buddhist influence still existed in the Majapahit era. To find out this, vastusastra-Manasara was used as a benchmark to find out the elements of the Majapahit temple which was influenced by India, especially South India which was thought to have a more dominant influence than North India on temple architecture in Indonesia.                 This study uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach by describing the figure and mass-space layout of Majapahit temples that have been selected as the object of research and compared with vastusastra-Manasara's narrative using reference objects to facilitate analysis in order to find out the relations of the Majapahit era temples with vastusastra-Manasara narrative.                 Based on the results of the study, it was found that the temples of the Majapahit era still have relations with vastusastra-Manasara narrative when viewed in terms of figure and mass-space layout. But the relationship between the two can be said to be increasingly decreased. The re-domination of the original culture of Indonesian society in the Majapahit era and the influence of other cultures such as China is thought to be the cause of the waning influence of India on the architecture of the Majapahit temple. This led to the fusion of culture in the Majapahit temple and resulted in variations of new temples that had never existed before.   Key Words: candi, majapahit, temple, vastusatra, manasara, relation

Adalaj Stepwell: A Magical Resonance of Architectural Ingenuity

The term Stepwell defined as "Well with Stairs" is a window to the ethnicity of forgotten civilizations. Stepwells are structures up to 3 to 5 storeys down from ground level, many of which are artistically designed with exquisite workmanship. These stepwells collect water during seasonal monsoons and in the deeper part of the ground with shadows around, such water bodies undergo slow evaporation process. In India, stepwells have been around since the age of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, about 4,500 years ago. During this period, bath wells with steps were created, with rooms surrounding the well-pit for resting. Such stepwells were once integral to the semi-arid regions of India, as they provided water for basic amenities for subsistence. These wells were also venues for colourful festivals and sacred rituals, paving the way for a rich cultural legacy. One such unique stepwell is located in Adalaj village in Gujarat, India, initiated by Raja Veer Singh in 1499 and completed by King Mohammed Begada for Rani Rudabai, wife of the Raja. The cultural and architectural representations in the stepwell at various levels are a tribute to the history, built initially by Hindus and subsequently ornamented and blended with Islamic architecture during the Muslim rule. But present-day perception, nurtured by technological advancements, has shifted. The paper focuses on the effects of the changing urbanscape on the architectural and visual connectivity with the cultural heritage of Adalaj so that adequate conservation measures can be proposed to preserve this icon of Indian architecture. Understanding the cultural relevance of such structures is crucial for their continued appreciation and protection.

PENERAPAN METODE TRANSPROGAMMING DALAM PENCIPTAAN RUANG INTERAKSI ANTAR ETNIS YANG FLEKSIBEL DI PASAR BARU

Pasar Baru Woven Society is a Third Place located on Jl. Pintu Air Raya, Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta. The project began with a vision to present a third place in Pasar Baru which became a crossing space between cultures and traditions in Pasar Baru. As is known in Pasar Baru village, it has a diversity of cultures consisting of several ethnic groups, including ethnic Chinese, ethnic Betawi, European ethnic, and Indian ethnic. Each of these ethnic groups has different needs and activities. Pasar Baru district has three main roads that dominate in the shopping area, each road has its own character, including; Pintu Air road is dominated by Indian architecture, Pasar Baru road is dominated by Chinese-style architecture, and Veteran road is dominated by European architecture. These roads seem separate because of their diversity, the Pasar Baru district should be a single entity that encompasses these differences. Therefore this project goals to cross various kinds of inter-ethnic programs that will generate a new typology of space that is more general and flexible so that it can be enjoyed together. To reach the goals, the design approach uses Bernard Tschumi's Trans Programming method. With this method, existing programs and programs that have similarities between ethnic groups will be crossed into a more general program to be together. So that there is no single program that is specific to one Ethnicity. Keywords:  ethnic diversity; Pasar Baru society; third place; trans programming  Abstrak Tenunan Masyarakat Pasar Baru merupakan sebuah Third Place yang terletak di Jl. Pintu Air Raya, Kelurahan Pasar Baru, Jakarta Pusat.

THE PHENOMENON OF "LIVE" AND "UNALIVE" RESIDENTIAL OBJECTS IN ANCIENT INDIAN ARCHITECTURE

The article considers the rules of creating “live” residential objects based on the principles of ancient Indian architecture, the impact of such objects on the quality of life. For comparison, the impact of “dead” objects on human development is illustrated by examples. The concepts of "live" and "dead" residential objects are defined from the standpoint of ancient Indian architecture. Several basic principles of ancient Indian architecture are described. The importance of applying some of the principles of ancient Indian architecture in the design and construction of residential facilities in Russia. Examples of architectural inventions created by the world-famous architect Dr. Ganapati Sthapati are included. The article has three main sections devoted to the main postulates formulated by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius.

The Chatrī: its Origin, its Basic Forms and its Variants in Bayana

The pavilions known as chatrīs are familiar features of North Indian architecture to the extent that Lutyens and Baker adopted them for New Delhi. Their antecedents in temple architecture and the traditional architecture of Iran, as well as their meaning, are intriguing: a canopy representing heavenly protection. The prevalence and variety of the form in Bayana is considered through detailed typological survey beginning with funerary chatrīs: the standard ones with four columns roofed with corbelled or true domes, also octagonal and hexagonal plans, or arranged in series as open rectangular canopied buildings. Indian prototypes and Persian wooden canopies, still standing or depicted in miniatures, are considered. Wooden pavilions in India are known from the sources, and early stone chatrīs for gateways are frequently found, while the Buland Darwāza to the shrine of Ḥamīd al-dīn Chishtī in Nagaur is a famous example with reverberations elsewhere. Bayana preserves experimental forms including a walled chatrī with twelve columns and the Baṛe Kamar: a tomb foreshadowing the arrangement of the tomb of Iʿtimād al-daula in Agra. The symbolic role in the minbars of early mosques is highlighted to explain how the emblematic form is deeply rooted in Indo-Iranian tradition.

Bayana in Rajasthan and its monuments challenge the perceived but established view of the development of Indo-Muslim architecture and urban form. At the end of the 12th century the Ghurid conquerors took the mighty Hindu fort, building the first Muslim city below on virgin ground. It was the centre of an autonomous region during the 15th and 16th centuries and was even considered by Sikandar Lodī for the capital of his sultanate before he decided on Agra, then a mere village of Bayana. A peculiarity of historic sites in India is that whole towns with outstanding remains can, through political change or climatic events, be either built over by modern developments or fall into obscurity. The latter is the case with Bayana, abandoned following an earthquake in 1505. Going beyond a simple study of the historic, architectural and archaeological remains ‒ surveyed and illustrated in detail ‒ the book takes on the wider issues of how far the artistic traditions of Bayana, which developed independently from those of Delhi, later influenced North Indian architecture and were the forerunners of the Mughal architectural style, which draw many of its features from innovations developed first in Bayana.

Designed environments, mimesis and likeness: exploring human-material ecologies.

This paper attempts to understand the trajectories of  “designed artifacts”, built or produced in the post war periods and its implications for the human body, material, ecology, and mimesis. Has Architecture gradually distanced itself from the body as an authoritative figure in its practice? Is it being seen more and more as an autonomous art, away from the complex web of social and political concerns? There seems to be a rationale to focus on the thinking and considerations that inform the production of architecture because it depends on the realm of conceptual philosophy; and both inhabit each other. The paper tries to address the association of humans with their artifactual environments. My interest stems from a long association of teaching in a college of architecture and design, and attempts to raise questions with regard to meaning and materiality. This paper also, in some sense, unlocks an environmental perspective on the relationship of the human body with the design that gives them shelter, affords actions, affords movement, and affords life in itself. Different patterns of the built environment afford different behaviors and aesthetic experiences. The perceptions of the environment thus limit or extend the behavioral and aesthetic choices of an individual depending on how the environment is configured, likened, imitated, or creatively reinterpreted. This article traverses, domesticity, tactile inhabitation, landscape, mythical realms of Indian architecture to the Postmodern architecture of “weak form”.

Mathematics in Ancient Greek Architecture Research Paper

Ancient Greek architecture remains an illustration of ancient Greeks’ beliefs concerning chaos and cosmos and their desire to achieve the highest degree of perfection. Ancient Greeks tried to ensure the reign of harmony in all areas of human existence. The Parthenon, as well as many other temples, are still regarded as a marvel created by human civilization. One of the pillars of the art of architecture has been mathematics, and the development of this science in Ancient Greece enabled Ancient Greek architects to create beautiful buildings (Wilson, 2015).

Geometry provided architects with the tools necessary for proper design and construction (Leonardis, 2016). Such concepts as the golden ratio, proportion, and grid, as well as the ability to generalize, were instrumental in the development of Ancient Greek architecture. This paper unveils some of the central mathematical concepts that led to the evolvement of architecture in ancient Greece.

Ancient Greeks placed considerable value on order and harmony in many aspects of their life. Pythagoras, influenced by Persian and Egyptian mathematical advances, developed the concept of proportion that was employed in Ancient Greek architecture. Symmetry was one of the architects of the significant principles followed, which enabled Ancient Greeks to create numerous outstanding buildings. It is essential to add that numerical symbolism, which was created within the field of mathematics, contributed significantly to the development of Ancient Greek architecture.

Pythagoras played a significant role in the development of concepts that were later used in various spheres. For example, the Parthenon is a conspicuous example of the way symmetry was utilized in architecture (Leonardis, 2016). The temple construction was based on the use of such ratios as 2:3 and 4:9. Moving from more minor parts to more significant amounts was the fundamental strategy based on the essence of symmetry. This design led to the construction of buildings characterized by such concepts as symmetry and harmony.

The concept of symmetry and proportion was further refined, which led to the development of a mathematical proportion widely employed in architecture. The use of the golden ratio became a manifestation of Ancient Greeks’ focus on harmony. The golden ratio is credited to Pythagoras, but it is believed that the Ancient Greek mathematician developed his theorem based on the knowledge he gained in the Near East (Leonardis, 2016). Ancient Greeks adopted many rules and concepts, but they were specifically interested in proportions and ratios due to their search for harmony.

The Parthenon is one of the most famous temples that can be regarded as an illustration of the benefits of mathematical symbolism for architecture development. This is the temple where the use of the golden ratio is exemplary (“Optical refinements at the Parthenon,” 2018). The value of this ratio is approximately 1.618, and it is calculated as follows: (√5+1)/2 (“Optical refinements at the Parthenon,” 2018).

The façade of the Parthenon is characterized by the use of the golden ratio, which makes the temple seem perfectly symmetrical. The golden ratio was used for the construction of columns that were especially common in the Doric period (Leonardis, 2016). Ancient Greeks divided the top surface of a column drum by radius, which can be seen in Parthenon. The floor plan of this grand building also has several examples of the way this mathematical concept was incorporated into the design and construction process.

In addition, Ancient Greek architecture benefited from the use of the grid. Euclid, a renowned Greek mathematician, and his followers developed the concept that helped them to create an abstract representation of space (Leonardis, 2016). It is noteworthy that Ancient Greek mathematicians contributed considerably to the development of abstractions and generalizations from particular to the whole (Gamwell, 2015).

This ability was instrumental in creating magnificent buildings, as architects were able to develop specific plans and collaborate with other stakeholders during the construction process. Thousands of temples, including the Parthenon, were designed using this grid that contributed to the creation of a sense of harmony (Leonardis, 2016). Rectangular rooms in temples and other buildings were standard and helped Ancient Greek architects to create the effect of the order. Moreover, the streets of Ancient Greek cities were also characterized by the utilization of the grid as the roads were at right angles to one another. The town of Olynthus is one of the brightest illustrations of the use of the grid in city design. The grid made it possible to make the city layout neat and easy to navigate.

In conclusion, it is necessary to note that Ancient Greek architects managed to achieve high mastery of mathematical concepts and principles, which resulted in the development of architecture. Pythagoras and other mathematicians refined or further developed the ideas of numerical symbolism, the golden ratio, symmetry, proportion, and grid. Significantly, the knowledge these philosophers used was accumulated throughout the centuries.

These concepts were adopted by architects who designed buildings that could astound people, which was specifically crucial for the ruling elite. Therefore, such grand architectural artworks as the Parthenon, as well as many other temples, theatres, and buildings, were created in strict adherence to the rules and conventions.

Achievements of Ancient Greek Architecture

This essay about ancient Greek architecture highlights its enduring brilliance and innovation. From the iconic Parthenon to the tranquil Theater of Epidaurus, Greek builders showcased unparalleled creativity. Through meticulous design and dedication, they crafted temples and theaters that transcend time, reflecting the cultural ideals of harmony and excellence. Beyond mere structures, Greek architecture embodies the spirit of democracy and communal living, leaving a profound legacy that continues to inspire admiration and reverence in modern times.

How it works

In the vast expanse of history, the brilliance of ancient Greek architecture shines like a beacon, guiding us through the annals of time with its unparalleled creativity and innovation. From the breathtaking heights of the Parthenon to the intimate tranquility of the theaters, the achievements of Greek builders stand as a testament to human ingenuity and artistic vision.

Perched atop the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon stands as a masterpiece of Doric design, its columns reaching skyward in a symphony of marble.

Dedicated to the goddess Athena, this temple is more than just a monument—it’s a testament to the power of faith, the glory of civilization, and the enduring legacy of Greek culture. Each sculpted frieze, each meticulously crafted detail, speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of the artisans who brought this vision to life.

But the Parthenon is just one chapter in the story of Greek architecture. Venture to the sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus, and you’ll discover another marvel—the Theater of Epidaurus. Nestled amidst the serene beauty of the Peloponnesian countryside, this ancient theater is celebrated for its impeccable acoustics and elegant design. Here, amid the whispering pines and the gentle breeze, audiences were transported to worlds of myth and legend, their spirits uplifted by the power of storytelling and the magic of theater.

Yet, Greek architecture is not confined to grand temples and theaters. In the bustling agora of Athens, the heartbeat of urban life pulses strong, echoing the vibrant energy of Greek civilization. Here, amidst the throng of merchants and philosophers, architects laid the foundations of democracy, shaping public spaces and civic institutions that would endure for centuries. The Athenian Agora, with its bustling markets and stately colonnades, served as a testament to the ideals of democracy and the spirit of communal living.

But Greek architecture is more than just a reflection of physical structures—it’s a window into the soul of a culture. The concept of arete—excellence in all things—infused every aspect of Greek society, from art to athletics, and architecture was no exception. Each temple, each theater, was a manifestation of Greek ideals—a celebration of beauty, harmony, and proportion. In the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, Greeks sought not only divine wisdom but also a connection to the cosmic order—a reminder of humanity’s place in the grand tapestry of existence.

As we reflect on the achievements of ancient Greek architecture, we are reminded of the timeless power of human creativity to transcend the boundaries of time and space. From the towering majesty of the Parthenon to the serene beauty of the Theater of Epidaurus, Greek builders left an indelible mark on the world—a legacy of beauty, innovation, and cultural significance that continues to inspire and captivate us to this day.
