Speech-language pathologists specialize in treating various speech impediments and addressing language comprehension difficulties.

Humans use their mouths and throats constantly, often unconsciously, to perform basic tasks like swallowing food or speaking aloud, so problems within this section of the body need to be addressed immediately and thoroughly.

Speech-language pathologists assist in these situations, and demand for their services is growing rapidly. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment within this profession will grow 25% through 2029, partly as a result of the aging American population and health ailments that are common among seniors that hinder talking and eating, such as strokes and Alzheimer's.

The median annual wage among U.S. speech-language pathologists in May 2020 was $80,480, according to the BLS, which notes that the usual entry-level academic credential within this field is a master's degree . Licensing requirements for this profession depend upon the state where a person practices, and many jobs within this field require national certification.

What Is Speech Pathology and What Does a Speech Pathologist Do?

The field of speech-language pathology encompasses much more than just communication disorders. The area of study also includes lessons about accent reduction and how to encourage children who are extremely picky eaters to consume food so that they are well-nourished, for example.

Speech-language pathologists specialize in treating various speech impediments and addressing language comprehension difficulties. They teach social skills to people with developmental disabilities, provide guidance to individuals with cognitive disorders and intervene when a person struggles to swallow food or beverages.

These clinicians routinely advise people who cannot hear well on how to understand others and express themselves, and they also show people who cannot speak how to communicate using picture boards and technological devices.

"Speech therapists help toddlers say 'mama' for the first time, assist teenagers who have a fluency disorder (stutter), and help adults who have suffered strokes be able to eat on their own again," Kassie Hanson, a Nebraska-based certified pediatric speech-language pathologist, wrote in an email.

Hanson recalls the beginning of her career and how working with a 2-year-old girl who was unable to talk solidified her career path. "After many sessions with the little girl, she said some of her very first words," Hanson says. "Just months later, she was talking in short phrases and sentences. Getting to help a little girl say her first words was life-changing and confirmed for me that I was in the right career!"

Steps to Become a Speech-Language Pathologist

Speech-language pathologists recommend that people who want to join their field complete all of the following tasks:

• Pursue a bachelor's degree and take college courses that relate to speech-language pathology.
• Search for accredited speech-language pathology master's programs using the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's EdFind Tool .
• Gain relevant work experience and prepare a strong graduate school application with solid grades, essays and recommendation letters.
• Excel on the GRE General Test if the targeted graduate school considers GRE scores.
• Get into a master's program, ideally with a generous scholarship to reduce the cost.
• Obtain a master's degree in speech-language pathology.
• Complete a clinical fellowship in speech-language pathology.
• Take and pass the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology, a national test that assesses understanding of key content and current practices within the field.
• Secure a state license to practice independently if it is offered or required by your state.
• Get certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, or ASHA.

An undergraduate education in a related subject, such as communication sciences and disorders, may be mandatory for admission into a master's program in speech-language pathology, though academic prerequisites depend upon the graduate school, and some programs have a more flexible policy on college majors .

Speech-language pathology master's students learn about the many health conditions that can interfere with a person's ability to swallow, communicate or eat, including ailments that primarily affect children and diseases that are common among seniors.

Jolene Hyppa-Martin, an associate professor and a speech-language pathologist with the University of Minnesota—Duluth 's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, notes that master's programs in speech-language pathology generally include lessons about how people who are unable to talk can express themselves via various alternative and augmentative communication devices.

Hyppa-Martin, who has a Ph.D. in speech, language and hearing sciences, adds that speech pathology students often have coursework where they learn how to counsel patients.

Standards set by ASHA's Council on Academic Accreditation mandate that all entry-level speech-language pathology programs allow students to accumulate at least 400 hours of supervised clinical practice experience. These rules also require faculty at such programs to focus on teaching certain core values like accountability, concern for patients, cultural competence and professional duty.

Hawaii board-certified speech-language pathologist Julia Kuhn explains that speech-language pathologists are expected to do a clinical fellowship – which is usually a paid, entry-level job immediately after graduation – so they can supplement their broad academic training with hands-on experience in a particular focus area, such as swallowing disorders or pediatric language issues, before they practice independently within that specialty.

Isa Marrs, a board-certified speech-language pathologist in New York, says that licensure helps to ensure that speech-language pathologists are trained thoroughly enough to care for vulnerable people. "There are so many important things that you are doing in somebody's life that having the proper training is crucial," she says.

What It Is Like to Work as a Speech-Language Pathologist

Although other health care providers such as physicians and nurse practitioners tend to earn higher wages than speech-language pathologists, there are many perks to this profession, including a solid work-life balance and a strong sense of purpose, according to experts.

But Kuhn warns that there are some hassles that come with the territory of speech-language pathology, such as a reliance on government payouts from social welfare programs like Medicare, which occasionally reduce compensation rates substantially.

Another downside to the field is the heavy caseloads that many speech-language pathologists carry, Kuhn says. Pathologists may feel frustrated by a limited amount of upward mobility since they rarely ascend to management positions, and their pay rates don't necessarily increase steadily over the course of their career, she notes.

An interest in social interaction is necessary to enjoy a career in this field, Kuhn says, as is genuine enjoyment of therapy sessions, which encompass the majority of a pathologist's workday.

Most speech-language pathologists emphasize the meaningful nature of their work. Marrs notes that there is a particular satisfaction that comes from teaching a person with a lisp to speak in a way that makes the individual feel proud rather than self-conscious.

She recalls teaching a child with autism how to chew so he could eat food that wasn't pureed. "When we accomplished that, it opened up so much for this child, as far as learning how to eat things other than baby food," Marrs says.

Hyppa-Martin says she uses voice banking tools to record those who will lose their voices due to degenerative health conditions. The software programs produce simulations of patients' voices and can be used to converse with others. Hyppa-Martin notes that one of her former clients who had a terminal illness was able to use voice bank technology to deliver a speech at his oldest daughter's wedding before his death.

Speech@NYU is the online SLP master’s program offered by the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders.  It is designed for aspiring speech-language pathologists who want the flexibility to pursue fulfilling careers in a variety of settings.

The online modality of the SLP master’s program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and prepares you to work toward speech-language pathology certification. The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice and enables you to provide person-centered care for diverse populations with communication and swallowing disorders.

Clinical Training in the Online Master’s in Speech Pathology

In the speech-language pathology program, you are assigned a dedicated placement specialist who will work with you to find NYU Steinhardt faculty-approved clinical field placement sites in or near your community.

With Speech@NYU, you will receive the in-depth training to provide forward-thinking, culturally competent care to clients of all ages without having to relocate.

As a student, you will complete a five-part sequence of on-campus clinical practicum and clinical field placement experiences at your placement site.

Clinical Immersions

During these immersions, you will:

• Provide language, hearing, cognitive, and/or swallowing screens to diverse communities.
• Receive dedicated supervision and receive on-the-spot feedback from speech-language pathologists.
• Participate in specialized workshops relating to topics such as language screening, instrumental assessment of voice disorders, dysphagia screening, and aphasia treatment.

You have the flexibility to pursue your SLP graduate degree  full time or part time based on your scheduling needs . You can earn your master’s in speech-language pathology in as few as six or seven terms attending full time, or set a slower pace by attending part time until your field placement begins.

Students in both the on-campus and online modalities of the SLP master’s program have the opportunity to complete a  study abroad program in countries like Sweden or Ghana  to study communication disorders from a cross-cultural perspective.

The program includes participating in local site visits, studying with local guest lecturers, and immersing yourself in a linguistically and culturally distinct setting.

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) received recognition from The U.S. News & World Report as offering one of the country’s top graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology. The program was ranked at #136 of 261 graduate programs nationwide.

MS in Speech-Language Pathology

Program Overview

The Master of Science (MS) degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Hunter College prepares students for professional practice in hospitals, healthcare agencies, general and specialized clinical settings, and private practices.

Students must obtain a total of 68 credits to complete the MS Degree in Speech-Language Pathology

Students matriculated in the Speech-Language Pathology curriculum are enrolled in a full time "locked" sequence of courses only. This means that part-time studies are not permitted and that the same courses are not offered every semester. The curriculum is offered in a progression of courses and students can only enroll in the order in which courses are given. Full-time enrollment requires up to 6 semesters of studies.

Degree Course Sequence

Summer - pre-1st year coursework.

The summer prior to the student's first full time semester of coursework, the following course is necessary to undertake in order to facilitate externship placement the following summer: CEDF 706 – Social, Historical, Philosophical Foundations of Education An in-depth study of the social, historical, and philosophical foundations of education and their impact on the American school.

1st Year Coursework

The first year curriculum is full-time, with day classes, followed by the second year of mostly evening classes to allow for attending externship. Summer Coursework - 1st Year

The summer set of classes during the first year of coursework for degree graduate students.

2nd Year Coursework

The second year of coursework for the matriculated student. Notably, practicum is only offered during weekdays and classes are usually scheduled only for the evening hours.

Students needing to further enhance clinical skill-sets may enroll in this summer practicum at the end of their second year, with the understanding that their degree will not be conferred prior to September.

Online SLP Program Curriculum Sample

Information is provided about the development of normal and disordered communication in children from 3 to 21 years of age. Includes material regarding important theories, legislation, service delivery models, assessment, remediation, literacy, and specific populations of special-needs children.  Attributes: TE. (3 Credits)

Objectives are to help the student understand basic statistical concepts utilized in research design and in speech-language pathology and audiology. Focus will be on the scientific method as a problem-solving process, developing experimental procedures for answering research questions, learning to establish and test hypotheses, and summarizing and interpreting data. (3 Credits)

Introduction to augmentative communication with discussion of its impact on individuals who are severely speech and language impaired. Students are familiarized with augmentative communication techniques and strategies. Assessment and intervention options are covered. Students have an opportunity for hands-on experience with a variety of augmentative communication devices and other adaptive equipment. Attributes: TE. (3 Credits)

Prepares students to identify, differentiate, and contrast the phenomenology, symptomatology, and diagnostic and therapeutic processes of adult aphasia, apraxia of speech, and related disorders. (S) (3 Credits)

When do the clinical experiences take place?

Throughout your program, you will have four clinical practica, as well as two full-time externships in the final semester. These experiences will prepare you for a career in speech-language pathology.

What Is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-language pathology is a specialized area of health care that deals with human communication science and disorders. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) specialize in the prevention, identification, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of swallowing, speech, and communication disorders. These disorders can be due to a variety of conditions including autism, brain injury, stroke, or cleft palate.

Speech-language pathologists (sometimes also called speech therapists) work with patients of all ages to improve their quality of life. They evaluate and treat children and adults who are unable to produce speech correctly or fluently, or have problems with their voice. Speech-language pathologists also help individuals who have difficulty with receptive language (understanding others) or expressive language (sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings). Finally, SLPs work with children and adults who have difficulty swallowing food or liquid.

The mission of the program in Speech-Language Pathology is to improve the lives of individuals with cognitive-linguistic, communication, and swallowing/feeding disorders by offering students the academic, research, and clinical foundations needed to provide evidence-based clinical services to diverse populations, utilizing current best practices.

About the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center graduate speech and language pathology program is an academically rigorous and comprehensive program recognized for its excellence in preparing speech pathologists who excel in their profession.

In addition to the academic coursework, over the course of the two-year program, you will gain experience in the university clinic and at least two other settings. Many clinical opportunities are available in the Lubbock community, but students can also participate in externships in other Texas cities and across the country. If you have already earned an undergraduate degree in a field other than communication disorders, we have several options for completing your leveling work.

Certification As a Speech-Language Pathologist

Although specific licensure requirements vary by state, graduation from an accredited program is required for certification as a speech-language pathologist. Certification is granted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and includes having a passing score on the national Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology.

State Licensure for Speech Language Pathology: What to Know

Like other medical professionals, speech-language pathologists in order to practice their specialty. The licensing process helps to establish and maintain high standards for licensure candidacy and practice. It also assures the public that practitioners have been through a thorough vetting process that involves qualifying candidates through education, supervised experience and examination.

• Emerson College - Master's in Speech-Language Pathology online - Prepare to become an SLP in as few as 20 months. No GRE required. Scholarships available.
• NYU Steinhardt - NYU Steinhardt's Master of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders online - ASHA-accredited. Bachelor's degree required. Graduate prepared to pursue licensure.
• Arizona State University - Online - Online Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science - Designed to prepare graduates to work in behavioral health settings or transition to graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology.

Who Determines License Requirements for Speech Language Pathologists?

Each state has separate legislation that describes the process and requirements for becoming licensed as a speech language pathologist. There is no single nationally accepted license for the profession. However, most states have fairly uniform requirements and most of them will accept a speech pathologist license from another state as an acceptable interim document until a local license is acquired through a reciprocal licensing process.

Each state licenses SLPs independently, designating a board or other agency as being responsible for administering the process and issuing licenses.

In most states this authority is delegated to a board of speech-language pathology and audiology made up of experienced practitioners in the field. These boards perform an individual evaluation of each licensure candidate in addition to ensuring that basic education and experience qualifications are met.

In other states, a state licensing department rather than an SLP board will issue the credentials directly and assess candidate qualifications.

The Role of the CCC-SLP Credential in the State Licensing Process

Like other medical professions, speech language pathologists have their own umbrella non-profit association to help set licensing standards and promulgate best practices to members. ASHA, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, has existed since long before states began to impose licensing requirements on speech-language pathologists.

ASHA offers a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) that serves as a nationally-recognized board certification denoting competence in the field. Though the CCC-SLP credential is accepted as one possible path to licensure in many states, it is usually considered optional and not a requirement for earning a state SLP license.

Because ASHA was well established before most states created licensing requirements for speech language pathologists, the organization has had a strong hand in shaping those requirements over the years. ASHA maintains a state-by-state guide to  licensing requirements  and publishes model bills  that suggest language state legislatures often go on to adopt in establishing requirements and licensing laws.

Qualifying for the CCC-SLP involves meeting requirements that often exceed basic licensing requirements the state has in place.

The standards for being awarded a CCC-SLP are strict. Candidates must:

• Possess a master’s, doctoral, or other recognized post-baccalaureate degree in the field from an ASHA-accredited institution
• Meet a minimum of graduate semester credit hours including academic coursework and supervised clinical experience
• Human communication
• Biological processes related to speech
• Social and behavioral sciences
• Standards of ethical conduct
• Oral and written communication
• Complete a minimum of 400 clock hours of supervised clinical experience
• Pass the national Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology
• Successfully complete a speech language pathology clinical fellowship

Even in those states that do not explicitly accept the CCC-SLP, standards are such that qualifying for the certification is usually sufficient to meet most of the separate requirements. Although specifics vary, most states specify:

• A master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited school
• A certain number of clinical practice hours
• Completion of a clinical fellowship
• Passing scores on the national licensing exam

Some states also require candidates to pass the jurisprudence exam, testing knowledge of that state’s particular rules and regulations for the field.

State-By-State Licensing Overview

All 50 states and the District of Columbia require a license in order to practice speech pathology professionally.

States fall into one of three categories when it comes to establishing a candidate’s qualifications for receiving a license:

• Those that require the CCC-SLP for licensure
• Those that offer multiple paths to qualifying for a license, including accepting the CCC-SLP in lieu of qualifying a candidate based on a separate review of education and experience
• Those that do not explicitly cite the CCC-SLP as a qualification, but which cite standards equivalent to those of the CCC-SLP as qualifiers

Most states require a clinical fellowship of 36 weeks (equivalent to ASHA requirements) and around 400 hours of supervised clinical practicum. States that do not require a CCC-SLP still require candidates to meet similar educational standards and to pass the same Praxis exam used to meet CCC-SLP requirements.

Graduate application for master’s degree speech-language pathology program.

Thank you for your interest in applying for graduate studies in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at California State University, Northridge. 

The Department  Graduate MS Application for admission in the Fall 2024 semester closed on January 5, 2024.   T he Program and CSUN does not require the GRE for Fall 2024 Admission.

The Department Application Deadline was  Fri day, January 5, 2024.  At this time, the application submission process for fall 2024 is closed.

• The Department requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Disorders  or  a minimum of  30  specific   prerequisite semester units  in the major before beginning graduate study.  However, we highly value prospective students’ grade point average in the major, and give priority to students who have submitted grades for  18 or more semester units  of required prerequisite major coursework.

• Letter of Recommendations are most effective when they are written by a person who knows you and your work.  Select someone who taught a course in which you performed well academically, and where you made contributions to the class.   Recommendations from family, friends and relatives, casual employers, and coworkers are not appropriate.  We suggest that at least 2 of the 3 letters come from academic faculty.
• Applicants should not need to contact the Department Office regarding the status of an application.  Once you have uploaded all of the documents and submitted your application through ApplyWeb (CollegeNet) the application is available to the Department Office for processing.
• When the review process is complete, the Department will email applicants regarding the outcome of the process.   These emails are expected to be sent out around March 2024.

Speech and Hearing Therapy

Speech and hearing therapy services focus on enhancing or restoring limited or lost communicative skills or swallowing capabilities lost due to injury, disease, aging or congenital abnormality. Easterseals licensed speech therapists incorporate the use of special facilitory techniques, augmentative and assistive equipment, therapeutic exercise and evaluation tools. Treatment focuses on:

• Addressing disabilities in children, including articulation disorders, language delay and stuttering, and feeding problems
• Providing care to adults who may experience communication disorders, stuttering and cognitive impairment
• Improving oral-motor, swallowing and respiratory skills
• Providing augmentative and alternative communication systems to individuals who cannot rely on speech (hearing) as a means of communication

Services may be provided in an Easterseals outpatient clinic, child development center, or adult day program, as well as at home, at school, and in a variety of other care settings. State and federal laws determine referral requirements and funding opportunities.

Speech and hearing therapy (also known as speech-language pathology and audiology) are important health-related specialties concerned with normal development of human communication and treatment of its disorders. Speech therapy focuses on voice and speech-language skills, while hearing therapy deals with hearing and hearing impairment.

Speech or language disorders may be present at birth or acquired later in life by disease, illness, head injury, substance abuse or allergy.

Hearing loss may be acquired before or during birth if a pregnant woman takes certain drugs or contracts a viral disease such as rubella (German Measles). Children sometimes acquire hearing loss from infection and inflammation of the middle ear or from communicable diseases. Adult hearing may be affected by prolonged exposure to loud noise and the process of aging.

Who Needs Speech-Language Pathology and Audiological Services?

Speech-Language Pathology is used to help:

• Individuals with voice disorders to develop proper control of their vocal and respiratory systems
• Individuals who stutter to learn to cope with the disorder and increase fluency
• Individuals with aphasia (a condition in which an individual has difficulty expressing thoughts and understanding others) as a result of a stroke or head injury. Speech-language pathology helps individuals relearn language and speech skills.
• Children and young adults with language disorders

Audiological services are used to:

• Determine existence and type of hearing impairments
• Provide rehabilitative services
• Assess amplification devices, such as hearing aids
• Teach individuals ways in which they can make the best use of their remaining hearing

Speech and hearing therapists, recognized as speech-language pathologists and audiologists, who provide treatment are professionally trained specialists holding master's degrees or the equivalent from programs accredited by an Educational Standards Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Some speech-language pathologists and audiologists hold doctoral degrees and work as teachers, advisors, researchers and consultants. Some specialize in certain areas, such as aphasia or hearing disorders in children, or participate in prevention and early identification programs.

Speech-language pathologists who use the initials "CCC-SLP" after their name have passed a national examination administered by the Clinical Certification Board of ASHA. Audiologists who pass a different national test, administered by the board, receive a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology and qualify to use the initials "CCC-A" after their name. A person who meets requirements in both professional areas may be awarded both certificates.

Individualized Treatment Plans

A speech-language pathologist evaluates a person's speech-language skills, determines the probable cause and extent of any existing disorder and develops appropriate treatment to correct or lessen the communication problem. Clinical methods used depend on the nature and severity of the problem, the age of the client and the client's awareness of the problem.

An audiologist, after evaluating a person's hearing and determining the type of hearing loss, establishes a treatment plan. This may involve therapy, prescription of special equipment such as hearing aids and electronic communication devices and referral for possible surgery or medication.

Both speech-language pathologists and audiologists refer their clients to other sources when necessary and help the client and the client's family understand the problem and treatment plan. They work closely with other professionals in health and education, including physicians, dentists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors and teachers.

Us news & world report ranks iowa audiology, speech-language pathology among the top in the nation.

Two programs in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are once again recognized among the best in their field according to the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2024 .  

Iowa’s audiology program is again ranked second best in the nation and remains the top public institution training audiologists. Speech-Language Pathology climbed in the rankings to fifth and is now the third-ranked public institution. 

New rankings of nation-wide  Audiology and  Speech-Language Pathology graduate programs is available on the USNWR website.

“These rankings recognize the daily efforts of our remarkable faculty and staff, who consistently strive to provide exceptional education to our students,”   said Eric Hunter , DEO and Harriet B. and Harold S. Brady Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences. “We are focused on training outstanding audiologists and speech-language pathologists.”

“Together, we are shaping the future of audiology and speech-language pathology, and we will continue to lead the way in delivering excellence,” Hunter added.  

Hunter, who has been at Iowa since August 2023 and is a nationally recognized expert in the field, was the first hire under the University of Iowa's Transformational Faculty Hiring Program , which is aimed at attracting world-class faculty to strategic programs and areas of excellence. He received a PhD from Iowa’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders program in 2001.  

Iowa has long been a leader in communication sciences and disorders dating back to 1897, when the university, led by Carl Seashore’s pioneering work, developed speech pathology as a discipline of study.  

“CLAS is proud of our faculty and staff who continue to guide this storied program into the future,” said Dean Sara Sanders. “Because of their tremendous talent and dedication to their research and teaching, CSD continues to be at the forefront of audiology and speech-language pathology.”   

The university, college, and department continue to lead, ensuring students access to unparalleled opportunities. Construction has started on a new $249 million building that will provide a state-of-the-art learning space for Iowa students studying in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Department of Health and Human Physiology, and the Carver College of Medicine’s Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.  

Substantial completion of the building is anticipated in 2025.

Speech-language pathology, social work, and public affairs graduate programs rank No. 1 in Florida

Florida State University graduate programs in speech-language pathology, social work, and public affairs are the best in Florida and among the top in the nation, according to the latest rankings published in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 edition of “Best Graduate Schools.”  

The three programs  join the university’s graduate program in education and the College of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice as those ranked No. 1 among Florida’s public universities . 

The speech-language pathology graduate program in the School of Communication Science and Disorders, housed within the College of Communication and Information, ranked No. 14 among all public and private institutions and No. 10 among publics. 

“The school’s position as the top-ranked speech-language pathology program in Florida, and its rank of No. 14 nationwide, are well deserved,” said Michelle Kazmer, Dean of the College of Communication and Information. “They reflect the rigorous curriculum, exceptional teaching, excellent clinical services, impactful translational research, and high levels of federal funding undertaken by the faculty and staff at the school.” 

The College of Social Work’s graduate programs rose six spots to No. 36 overall and checked in at No. 22 among public universities. 

“The ascent of the College of Social Work in academic rankings is a testament to the steadfast dedication of our faculty and staff, along with the exemplary achievements of our students and alumni in the field,” said David Springer, Dean of the College of Social Work. “Our progress is propelled forward by the unwavering backing from our FSU leadership, notably Provost Clark and President McCullough, who recognize the profound importance of social work education and research, and our impact on communities.” 

Graduate programs within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy also received recognition. The public affairs program ranked No. 47 in the country and No. 33 among publics, while the relatively new public health program placed No. 88 overall and No. 59 among publics. 

“I am proud to see two of our graduate programs recognized among the best in the nation,” said Tim Chapin, Dean College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. “Even given a transition to a new generation of outstanding young faculty, our public affairs program remains Florida’s best. The public health program is also now ranked, which is a remarkable achievement given the massive growth of the university’s fastest growing undergraduate major in this discipline.”  

The U.S. News rankings of the speech-language pathology, social work, and public affairs disciplines are based solely on opinions of each program’s quality as rated by academic experts at peer institutions.

Incumbents in the Speech Pathologist position screen, diagnose, assess, identify, and treat various types of communicative disorders.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Speech Pathologist reports to a Director. This classification supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships.

Typical Functions

• Plans and implements remedial programs, strategies and techniques for students with language, speech and hearing disabilities.
• Designs, implements, and monitors Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) and/or Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for eligible students in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Consults with parents, faculty, administrators and specialists concerning the language, speech, and hearing needs of students; responds to inquiries and provides information concerning program activities and student progress; provides referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.
• Maintains up-to-date and accurate records and reports on each student enrolled to include medical reports; diagnostic information, student goals and objectives, conference notes from parents and other professionals, attendance and program activities; develops and maintains a schedule outlining program activities; prepares required external reports in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Completes annual HIPAA training, ensuring strict confidentiality with regard to all aspects of student information.
• Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
• Supports and participates in school-wide activities.
• Contributes to a professional learning community in the school.
• Collaborates with university departments to assist students in practicum and student teaching opportunities.
• Instructs parents in small groups to implement evidence-based practice.
• Supervises undergraduate and graduate students during practicum, student teaching, and internships.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

• Ability to evaluate and treat speech, language, and hearing disorders.
• Knowledge of speech-language pathology theory and practice.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to collaborate with teachers and staff.
• Knowledge of state CORE curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and completion of a clinical fellowship as well as Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), or ability to complete fellowship and obtain CCC within one year of employment, is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
