Photo Essay: Bagan, Myanmar

bagan essay 250 words

Bagan is the highlight of Myanmar and for many travelers the only reason to visit this fascinating country. With roughly 4400 temples Bagan earned the name of “Temple Capital of the World”. The temples date from around the same period as those of Angkor. Maybe Angkor’s individual temples may be more spectacular, but Bagan’s brilliance is in the amazing views of temple upon temple dotting the plain. Dusk and dawns are simply magnificent.

I spent 2 days, in late 2013, walking and cycling around the enormous site. Here’s my photo essay of that day.

Photo Essay

I got to Bagan at 4 in the morning with the overnight bus from the capital, Yangon . For accommodation you have 3 options: Old Bagan (big wallet), New Bagan (midrange wallet) or Nyaung U (small wallet). As a die-hard backpacker I chose to stay at the May Kha Lar Guest House in Nyaung U which is a short stroll from the bus station.

The majestic Thatbyinnyu Temple in Bagan.

bagan essay 250 words

Bagan is a fascinating place!

The best way to see the ancient site of Bagan is by bicycle. You can choose between an old fashioned bicycle or a super fancy pink electric bike. I thought I’m Dutch, I’m used to ride a bicycle, so I chose the old fashioned one. Well I wish I didn’t. The roads are bad, bumpy and some fully covered with sand which makes it really hard and exhausting to ride a bicycle. The second day I had put away my pride I chose the pink electric bike instead.

So many striking temples to choose from!

bagan essay 250 words

With 4400 temples waiting for me I was overwhelmed: where do I start? I did a bit of research beforehand and targeted a few big-name temples which formed the basis of my circuit. But the real fun in Bagan is in discovering temples as you cycle around.

bagan essay 250 words

Sometimes it feels like you have all the temples of Bagan for yourself.

Many temples can be climbed; look for a doorway, which most of times means that there’s a narrow stairway which leads to a viewing platform. The views from the top of these temples are just unbelievable. It gives you a great perspective of the size of this ancient site; hundreds of temples in every direction. I needed some time to take this all in; just Wow!

bagan essay 250 words

I can’t get enough of these fascinating temples.

bagan essay 250 words

All temples to be entered barefoot.

The temples have to be entered and climbed barefoot, so wear comfortable shoes as you have to take them off and put them back on quite some times during the day. And off course, needless to say, bring plenty of water.

bagan essay 250 words

Climb temples to get amazing views of Bagan’s mind blowing site.

bagan essay 250 words

One day is not enough for Bagan’s enormous archaeological site.

A few temples worth exploring are: Thatbyinnyu Pahto (Bagan’s highest temple), Ananda Pahto, Buledi (good for sunrise), Shwesandaw Paya, Dhammayangyi Phato, Sulamani Phato, Pyathada Paya (good for sunset) and Mingalazedi.

bagan essay 250 words

Temples can be seen in every direction!

bagan essay 250 words

Perfect place for a lunch stop!

The temples of Bagan are extremely peaceful and it will happen quite some times that you will have the temple and its amazing view all for yourself. You start to wonder how this place would have been back in its glory days over 800 years ago.

Above: Incredible view of Bagan, Myanmar – Below: Renting a horse cart is a great way to see the area

bagan essay 250 words

If you want to take it slow (and avoid the burning sun) you can also arrange a horse cart for the day. These horse carts are already waiting for you as soon as you get off the overnight bus from Yangon. You can jump right in the cart and head off to one of the temples for a sublime Bagan sunrise. I chose for a few more hours of sleep in my hotel 😉

bagan essay 250 words

The mist makes it a bit mythical and medieval.

bagan essay 250 words

Stunning architecture.

Another way to see the site in its full glory is by a hot air balloon. During sunrise you will see heaps of hot air balloons scattering around the sky. A bit too pricey for me with rates around $300. A bicycle is just fine for me 🙂

bagan essay 250 words

Bagan is pure magic.

bagan essay 250 words

I recommend 2 to 3 days for the archaeological site of Bagan.

I’m not a big morning person so I skipped the sunrises over Bagan, but instead in the late afternoon I chose one of my favorite temples and waited until the sunset kicked in. A surreal and breathtaking view! The mist helps to create a mythical and medieval atmosphere.

bagan essay 250 words

Every temple is unique in its own way.

bagan essay 250 words

Sunset is kicking in.

With no doubt: Ancient Bagan is one of the most spectacular sights in Southeast Asia. The views from any of the temples are just mind blowing. Bagan is not as busy as Angkor, but I’m not sure for how long this will last as the visa regulations for Myanmar are starting to loosen up which makes it a lot easier for travelers to enter this incredible country. Check it out before it becomes the second Angkor!

Bagan Photo Essay

There is so much to see in the city, a Bagan photo essay is the best place to begin.  Landing in the early morning is like stepping into a fairy tale.  A slight haze is surrounding the temples which stretch as far as the eye can see.  Antiquity and mystery is scattered across the dry plains. Colors are completely different from Yangon, there is very little green and the countryside is not filled with the glistening gold of our first stop, but golden grasses and naturally colored brick temples of an ancient capital.

bagan essay 250 words

The morning was spent walking around the Min Nan village and exploring the stupas and temples of the area.  Each is more beautiful in it’s decay than the last.

20140402-123901.jpg

The area is still home to over 2500 structures, so you can imagine how many must have filled the area in the 11th and 12th centuries.  Families created their own buildings as a sign of wealth and power, probably similar to the thought process behind all the McMansions that pop up around Boston, my home town.

20140402-123920.jpg

The country is much more primitive here.  Many people rely on ox cart for transportation and the roads are often not paved.  It is a simple way of life.  The internet has arrived, but it is slow and painful. After a BIT of frustration, we found it was better to just turn off for a few days and take in all the countryside had to offer.

20140402-123939.jpg

It was impressive to see the restoration work being done on the inside murals.  Many have all ready been restored to their former brilliant glory.  It is a slow, painstaking process of removing years and years of dirt and grim buildup, but the magic revealed underneath is pretty spectacular. Especially when you consider how old the original paintings are, and the natural materials they must have used for pigments.

20140402-124105.jpg

We did have our fair share of gold leaf.  Shwe Zigone Pagoda is the most impressive local golden pagoda from 1090 AD.  It is said to house Buddah relics and introduced us to Myanmar’s unique Theravada Buddhism.  This intricate combination of animism, alchemy and worship of the Nat Gods, was fascinating to learn about. Modern day practice focuses more on the gentler side of Nat culture and ones favorite spirits are looked to bring success in everyday life.

20140402-124126.jpg

The craft scene in Bagan is very active.  Well known for their parasols and laquerware, we were able to see demonstrations of the process of both. Bagan House Lacquer has a very comprehensive collection and demo area.  They sell a selection ranging  from small bowls to dining room tables.  And of course they ship worldwide.  In the back area is an impressive collection of antiques.

20140402-124206.jpg

To get a taste of village life,  many horse carriage and ox cart rides are available.  Traveling inside the villages this way allowed you to really see a slice of everyday living away from all of the temples and pagodas. You’re up high enough to see over the walls, kids chase the carts, women are cooking and it’s a bumpy backstage pass to Bagan.

20140402-124314.jpg

Sunset is one of the great joys of this area.  The temples outline the hills and for the moment all is peaceful and good in the world. Our wonderful guide made sure we saw it from a unique vantage point each night.

20140402-124354.jpg

Ahh…..and the Bagan Lodge .  What a great spot to come back to and recharge when your mind is swimming  trying to process all of the sites of the day.  A pool to relax by and a fully stocked cocktail lounge.  Like I said, all is good in the world………

Part 2 will take you through the rest of our stay in Bagan.

Porsche driving adventure

It really is another world! Lovely article and pictures.

' src=

Thanks Karen.

' src=

This is an area of the world that has always held a fascination to me. Bagan looks like a nice place to “turn off” as you put it and relax while still being able to explore the 2500 structures in the area.

Lee-In Bagan, you don’t have much choice. Unless of course you just want to frustrate yourself! It was a freeing relief to not have to worry about the internet on one part of my journey!

' src=

Great photos! I really loved my 3 days at Bagan, such a cool place to just jump on a bike and explore. It looks a lot greener than when I was there.

Jon, I think it gets a lot dryer and dusty at other times of the year. When I look at the photos again, it seems like it was a lot greener than I remember. Shaking out our clothes was the first thing we did when we got back to the hotel. Quite a change from tropical Yangon.

' src=

Alison, haha I already mentioned this, but I love your lay-out! Great photo-essay of Myanmar. I may go there this summer so thanks for this article :)!

' src=

that was a brilliant photo essay, it does look so accessible and still untapped with all the domestic animals running around those site, love this…i need to go before the building craze sets in

' src=

Looks like a beautiful and rustic place to visit. The hot air balloon pictures looks fabulous!

Angela-Myanmar can handle all ends of the travel spectrum when it comes to hotels. With so many people visiting, you just have to make sure you make your arrangements early. The balloon ride was certainly a highlight for me.

' src=

Lovely photos and article! How long did you spend in Myanmar in total?

Elena, I was there for 16 days, but a lot of that was travel time. I feel like I barely scratched the surface, and now of course want to go back for more!

' src=

This looks amazing! I love the first photo. I never heard of Bagan before but it looks like a beautiful and lovely place to visit

' src=

Myanmar is a part of the world that is particularly intriguing and for the most part unknown to me. I would love to experience Bagan after reading this excellent review.

Your pictures are excellent and I love how you capture the reader in this photo essay approach. It just shows that pictures can truly tell a story with a minimum amount of words.

Going through my photos to put the essay together was like being there again. Although at times I just like to put the camera away and just experience a spot, that feeling doesn’t last long and out it comes again. I do love photography, so thanks.

' src=

Waw Alison, I love your beautiful pictures! Bagan looks like a very interesting place to visit. Your article describes very good what’s going on there. Thanks a lot! Cheers, Jempi.

' src=

What a fascinating place and your photographs bring it to life beautifully. I’ve never been further east than India but would love to explore Myanmar. There is still so much of the world I’ve yet to discover.

Kat, India is still my most favorite place, but Myanmar is high on the list. Being exposed to so much travel on social media makes me realize how much I still have to discover!

' src=

Great photos, Alison! I especially like the first… I’m guessing that was taken from a hot air balloon??

Myanmar is not somewhere I’ve made it to just yet but, if the opportunity ever arises, I think I’d jump at the chance.

Paul, you’re right it was indeed taken from my trip on Balloons Over Bagan. It was one of the highlights of the trip, and gave me such a different perspective. It was hard to imagine the landscape with over 6000 temples back in the 12th century. Looking from that vantage point, I could see what it must have been like. Highly recommend traveling to Myanmar if you get the chance.

' src=

Great photos of Bagan! I haven’t visited it yet but it is definitely on my list! 😀

Thanks, it was a photographers delight!

' src=

Great article alison! 🙂 Even the photos were great.

' src=

Your posts and photos on Bagan are making me want to visit more and more! Stunning photos and I would love to see Bagan in person.

' src=

I went to began in 2013 and that trip was really enjoyable. This post is also very interesting. Great one thanks!

The magic of bagan ~ photo essay.

The majestic beauty of Bagan is unsurpassed. It is breathtaking! We were fortunate to experience it under a full moon before dawn, followed by sunrise.

Early morning at dawn climbing up a bamboo ladder to perch on a pagoda to get a birds eye view of the valley as the sun rises

As the sun rises, so do the tear drop shaped hot air balloons ~ rising slowly over the horizon. Quite a sight!

The plains of Bagan offer serenity and beauty as far as the eye can see.

As day light breaks, thanks in part to jet lag (which works to our advantage here) we make our way through the landscape stopping at stupas and temples.

This, our first day in Bagan, we awoke early and walked randomly through the fields and valley enjoying our first glimpse of Bagan’s architectural heritage.

Each temple is different. Some are large and majestic, others are small and simple. Almost all have statues of Buddha which have been repaired to return Bagan to it’s ancestral beauty.

Agricultural fields and ancient temples co mingle.

Coming upon this scene of the farmer and his cows in front of the pastel colored temples in the early morning, was like walking into a painting.

Peta gets a big hello lick from a cow!

Our early morning walk through the valley of temples takes us to a market town. Time for breakfast! sourdough pancake with chickpeas.

Burmese pancakes with a smile. Don’t look like much, but awfully good!

Little girl sitting outside the pagoda in the market town.

This golden Buddha is huge and soars up inside the town’s central pagoda.

Plentiful supply of produce of all types.

A woman at market spends time carefully selecting a basket full of mini eggplants.

Women balancing market goods in baskets on their heads.

A bull, unfazed by the market activity right around him.

We spend our days either walking or electric biking (no motorbikes allowed, which is great as it eliminates  the noise and emissions that would come with regular bikes.) The electric bikes are rather slow, have no pick up, but are perfect for temple hopping. They get returned each night in order to recharge for the next day.

Some of the temples have 4 Buddhas, each one facing a different direction of the compass.

Gold cloaked Buddha inside one of the larger more prominent temples: Ananda Temple.

A secret inside stairway leads us to the roof of a small old monastery. Perfect spot for sunset and meditative moments.

Once again, “have bike, will travel.” Our favorite mode of transportation. In this case, the electric bike.

The pool at our lodging, which is right on the edge of the fields, with a panoramic view of temples in the landscape.

Internet is a tricky business in Myanmar as its not easy to get online for the most part. A gift as well as a challenge when it comes to things like blogging.

Food looks simple, but tastes delicious. There is a lot of emphasis and variety of soups: pumpin and ginger soup being a constant. Veggies are left crunchy and its easy to get yummy meals in Myanmar. We had read that Burmese cuisine is a combination of Indian, Thai and Chinese. However, our experience is that it is  a unique taste profile that differs from all three. Fish sauce, noodles, veggies, mutton, crunchy toppings, herbs which all create the Burmese flavor.

One bowl of mutton curry, the rest of the bowls all have veggies: Vegetarian paradise of chickpeas, eggplant, okra and green beans.

6 days in Bagan: serenity and architectural beauty. A once in a life time experience!

We spend hours chilling in the languid pace of Bagan.

While sitting next to a small temple, a herd of cattle, including baby ones, pass by in a dusty silent magical moment.

Relaxing on the banks of the Ayerwaddy River.

Burmese tapas approach to eating: small plates of yumminess, in this case mostly veggies. The pumpkin bottom left is particularly good. Reading “Twlight Over Burma” an autobiography of an Austrian woman who married (unknowingly) a Shan Prince from HIspaw, North of Mandalay. She found out she had married a Burmese prince when their boat arrived to much celebration and festivity, which unbeknownst to her, was for him and his new bride.

Plenty of opportunity and time to stretch, create space in mind and body.

Burmese ‘doughnuts’ ~ the center has coconut and cinnamon. Delicious.

Sugarcane juice was one of our favorite Vietnamese fruit juices…. We rediscover this forgotten pleasure once again in Myanmar. Super nutritious too!

We stumble upon a procession… turns out to be a very special day indeed: a community send off for young boys about to become novices at the local buddhist monastery.

Young women in brightly colored best longyis lead the procession towards the temple, which will celebrate the start of the young boys becoming novice monks.

Villagers on the side walk watch the procession go by.

Young boys in their finest. Proud parents walk alongside the horses, ox and carts, as their children are heading to temple for initiation into monkhood. A week is the minimum amount of time.

A proud mother shows off her offspring from the ox driven cart, during the procession.

Some carriages, such as this one are highly decorated for the festive occasion.

Chickpea pancakes – genius, why didn’t anyone come up with this before?! Love the herd of cows with the temples. They must have made quite a racket!

Pancakes were yummy with a sour dough taste.

The herd of cows were pretty quiet. We have a video of it as well. Maybe we will post it. Thanks for your comments!

omg that was such an emotional blog for me! Seeing you two back in Asia, just so right…The FOOD, how in heaven you must have been and the sights…eye candy for days..I am looking at flights right now! THank you for your beautiful posts. (I do prefer these over videos but only because videos take so long for me to download).

It really does feel great to be back in Asia! The food was really good…very specific tastes and dishes. You would just love Bagan of that I have no doubt. What a special magical place. Glad you enjoyed the posts! Thanks for the feedback.

Beautiful!! Really enjoying Myanmar through your lenses and stories!

Thanks for sharing, Peta! I may be headed there in April to celebrate my birthday week off…Looks serene, natural…just what I’m looking for! But maybe 1 week is not enough?Where did you stay in Bagan?

It was simply put….amazing! One week in Bagan is wonderful. Most people stay just 1-3 days, but we loved being there for a whole week. I can try to find the name of where we stayed, as it was perfectly located. Quiet and with a great view towards the temples, pool etc and not too pricey. Comfy too. Enjoy and happy birthday in advance fellow fire sign.

Enjoyed the pictures, people and settings. Peace and Serenity with good people.

From Nikki B:

Love this! Miss you both!

You are a grand photo-star!. The images are lovely, colorful, and evocative, as usual. But are some pics sideways and upside down for a reason? For me it interrupted the flow of the essay. It didn’t significantly diminish my enjoyment…

Thank you excitable Ape! 🙂

Nope no reason other than we are having some technical difficulties… Hopefully to be resolved soon. It all began with inferior to almost no internet in Bagan and most of Myanmar. Try loading photos onto a blog when it takes hours for a handful of photos to load. Sigh.

Glad you enjoyed nonetheless!

From Adrienne J:

Just beautiful. I love seeing this through your eyes and your artistic photography.

Thanks Adrienne, Nikki and KB. So glad you enjoyed this post in Bagan and we could share this spectacular experience with you. Thanks for the feedback!

not too hot not too cold color everywhere- and meaning- glad a friend of a friend of yr sister passing this on- thanks- tami

Hi Tami, thanks for reading us. Yes,much of Asia is very colorful. In fact last year we flew from India to Turkey and the shock of the loss of color all around us ( what happened to all the saris?) was rather shocking and tough to readjust too. Has anyone else ever noticed that in Istanbul so many people wear jeans and the color black.

Hi Peta, I’m reading all your posts on Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam as Mike and I try and figure out where we are heading in fall. I think we have narrowed it down to this part of the world. We haven’t been to any of these countries (have visited Thailand-1991, Malaysia-1991 and Indonesia-1991, 2010 and loved them all). Unfortunately we only have 3, maybe 4 weeks and we don’t want to rush from place to place. Anyway, I’m looking forward to going through your posts. I’m happy for any recommendations. PS: Bagan looks awesome. Photos are great particularly the procession of beautiful young ladies.

' src=

Love seeing Bagan thrugh your lens. How lucky were you to happen upon that monk ordination procession #jealous!

Oh so great you went to see our post after just being there! What a special place Bagan is. The procession was spectacular ~ one of those unplanned but wonderful events that we were lucky to witness.

' src=

Great set of photos – I feel like I was there with you. I like the men working the fields in the shadow of the ancient temples. The best part of travel is coming across local events unplanned. That procession looked colorful and fun.

Thanks Jeff. This trip was one of our most memorable and totally agree that our favorite thing is to come across local events by chance.

Bagan: our guide to burma’s archaeological wonders.

Bagan Temple

In the first of a series of posts on Southeast Asia’s iconic historical sites, we explain the history and significance of Bagan – one of Southeast Asia’s most incredible archaeological sites.

Located in Burma, most consider Bagan to be comparable with Angkor Wat in terms of scale and significance. Like Angkor, it has been the subject of numerous beautiful and atmospheric photos , and as more and more people flock to Burma each year it has become the centre of the country’s nascent tourist industry.

Where?    In the Mandalay region of Burma (Myanmar), 290 km (190 mi) southwest of Mandalay and 700 km (430 mi) north of Yangon.

What?    Bagan was the capital city of the Pagan Kingdom, the first Burmese kingdom, from 1044 until 1297. Today the area is home to more than 2,500 Buddhist stupas, temples and monasteries – the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist monuments in the world – but at the kingdom’s height there were over 10,000.

When was it built?    Most of Bagan’s monuments were built over a 250-year period between the 11th and 13th centuries, when the Kingdom of Pagan was at its height. Some, however, were built somewhat before or after this stretch.

Who built it?    The rulers of the Pagan Empire & their subjects

How big is it?   The Bagan Archaeological Zone covers an area 13 km by 8 km (8 mi x 5 mi), with Old Bagan at its heart. It incorporates the Bagan plains, New Bagan and the district of Nyaung-U.

Construction

Most of the Bagan temples fall into one of two categories: stupa-style solid temples, and gu-style hollow temples. The Bagan stupas (or pagodas), took their influence from early Pyu constructions as well as India and Ceylon, and represent Mount Meru in the Buddhist cosmos. They are usually bell-shaped, with one or more rectangular terraces at their base, and contain a relic chamber. The main features of the hollow, gu-style temples, meanwhile, are a vaulted indoor chamber and pointed arches. This technique of vaulting is thought to have been developed in Bagan in the 11th century, only to be forgotten by craftsmen in later eras.

Bagan started life as a small settlement, thought to have been founded in the late-ninth century by the early Burmans, who had migrated to the Irrawaddy Valley from what is now southern China. The name Bagan comes from the old Burmese word Pugan, which is in turn derived from the older Burmese word Pyugam, meaning “Pyu Village” – and in its infancy Bagan was just one of many competing city-states inhabited by the Pyu people in that region.

Over the course of about 200 years, Bagan gradually grew to absorb these neighbouring principalities, and in the mid-11th century King Anwrahta founded the Pagan Kingdom – unifying for the first time the regions that would form the basis of modern Burma. From 1044 until 1287, Bagan was the capital of this kingdom, growing steadily in size and wealth to become a major centre for religion (including both Theravada, Mahayana and Tantric schools of Buddhism as well as Hindu and animist traditions), scholarship, astrology, medicine and law. At this time, the Pagan Kingdom was equal in sophistication and power with the neighbouring Khmer Empire, and attracted monks and scholars from all over South and Southeast Asia.

In the mid-13th century, a series of Mongol invasions sent the already rather unstable Pagan Empire into decline. The political fragmentation that ensued continued for 250 years – about as long as the empire’s golden age – lasting well into the 16th century. During this time, some religious monuments continued to be built in Bagan, until slowly but surely it halted altogether. Only around 200 monuments were built between the 15th and 19th centuries.

Though it has diminished from a city of up to 200,000 inhabitants to a small town, Bagan has continued to survive as a significant pilgrimage site throughout history until the present day. Many of its monuments fell into disrepair in the centuries following the fall of Pagan, while others were repainted or fitted with new religious statues. Between 1752 and 1885, the Burmese state funded the systematic renovation of many of Bagan’s monuments, in a move that is largely considered to have done more harm than good.

Bagan has also had to deal with numerous earthquakes over the years, some of which have caused extensive and even irreparable damage to temples in the area – notably the Bupaya pagoda, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1975. In the 1990s, the Burmese government once again carried out restoration works on many of these monuments, and once again the renovations were considered by the international community to have been irresponsible and damaging to the integrity of the area.

Bagan today

It is due to the botched restorations of the 1990s that Bagan has not (yet) been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites – despite its undeniable impressiveness and wide-reaching appeal. This is unfortunate, as it means no UNESCO funding for (proper) renovations, or protection to guard against further deterioration.

Bagan is at risk not only from the well-meaning meddling of would-be renovators, but also from further earthquakes and from erosion caused by the Irrawaddy River – which has, in fact, already worn away a significant portion of the surrounding area with the strength of its current.

Despite this, Bagan is still an enchanting and as yet relatively little-visited archaeological marvel, and constitutes the highlight of most trips to Burma. While there are a handful of popular temples and pagodas that receive a steady stream of visitors, there are countless more that remain obscure and undiscovered.

Bagan’s most popular temples and pagodas are as follows:

Ananda Temple – Bagan’s holiest temple, built 1091 Shwesandaw Temple – “sunset temple” – probably Bagan’s most popular tourist spot. A great place to watch the sunset (hence the name). Shwe Zigon Temple – Gourd-shaped golden pagoda, built 1087. This was the model for the famous Swedagon Pagoda. Thatbyinnyu Temple – Bagan’s tallest pagoda, 66 metres high. Built in the 12th century. Shwegugyi Temple – One of Bagan’s best-preserved temples, built 1131. Another great (and less crowded) place from which to observe the sunset. Dhamma Yangyi Temple – Commissioned by King Narathu to atone for assassinating his father, brother and wife. Work on the temple was abandoned after the king himself was assassinated. Gawdaw Palin Temple – Exhibits a fusion of Burmese and Indian styles, with a beautiful courtyard and interesting bell hangers. Bupaya Stupa – Golden, gourd-shaped stupa sitting on a temple by the river.

Visiting Bagan

A small cluster of habitations close to the river: Old Bagan, Myinkaba and New Bagan host the majority of the accommodation options in the area and have a selection of restaurants of varying quality.

Golden Pagoda - insidevietnam Tours

Many of the highlight temples and pagodas are located close to Old Bagan, and the countryside is ideal for some independent exploration on foot or bike. During the peak heat of March/April temperatures regularly head into the high 30s C (approx 100 F), so we recommend avoiding the midday heat and preparing appropriate clothing, sunhats and water.

With so many temples and pagodas to explore it’s easy to get away from the tourist crowds, and for those feeling energetic there’s nothing better than hiring a bike and heading out. Bikes can be hired from most hotels, or from a number of places in Old and New Bagan. Ask your guide for their recommendations, but likewise make sure you prepare for the heat and take plenty of water.

Horse & cart You can rent a horse cart with a driver for around 10000 – 15000 Kyats for a full day. The horse carts are slow, shaky, bumpy, and not exactly the most comfortable mode of transportation, but you’re sheltered from both sun and rain, so that’s a bonus. One good option is to rent a horse cart for 1 day to see the major temples, and then visit the remaining sights on bicycle the next day.

Hot air balloon Hot air balloon has become a popular way to see Bagan, and is an enchanting (if expensive) way to get a handle on the size and scope of this astounding area. A dawn balloon ride costs about US$320-350 per person, and can be taken from October till April.

Now is the time to visit this beautiful country!

Bagan History

Located on a scenic bend on the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar (Burma) the temples of Bagan are an enigma. Marco Polo called it, “one of the finest sights in the world” and I have to humbly agree. At its height, Bagan’s various rulers called for over 4,000 Buddhist temples to be built and of that number over 2,200 still exist, in varying states. First settled in the 10th Century Bagan was host to a virtual building frenzy until Kublai Khan’s Mongols ransacked the city at the end of the 13th Century. However, centuries of war, looting, neglect, and earthquakes have not managed to extinguish the magnificence of this unforgettable vision on the plains of central Burma.

The thousands of temples in Bagan are an impressive sight and you really should allow a few nights here to explore this incredible archaeological site. The site is huge but there are many ways you can get around and explore the area.

What is the best way to see the temples of Bagan?

The cheapest way to get around is to hire a bicycle. Bagan is too large to explore on foot so a bicycle is a great way to get to most of the temples. It is possible to rent an electric bike but tourists are not allowed to use motorbikes. Most guesthouses and restaurants have bikes for hire. Bring plenty of water with you, although there are plenty of places selling water near the temples.

We decided to go by horse and cart. Normally we wouldn’t do this on our travels but we met a lovely Burmese guy when we looking for a restaurant on our first night and he clearly loved his horse and we ended up being taken around by him to many of the sites for a few days. He took us to places we would never have found if we were traveling independently. We even had dinner with his family on the last night.

A more expensive but comfortable way to get around is by air-conditioned taxi and a great way to avoid the heat and dust. You would be looking at $20-$50 a day.

It’s also possible to do a hot air balloon trip over the temples. We didn’t do this but it was beautiful to see the balloons over the temples at sunrise. The hot air balloons only operate from October to April. It’s best to book in advance especially over Christmas and the New Year.

How to get to Bagan, Myanmar

You can choose to arrive by air, by train, by road or by river. For those opting to arrive by air, the nearest airport is Nyaung U Airport which is located about 20 minutes away from Old Bagan and New Bagan. ATM facilities are available at the airport. We arrived on the overnight train, a very bouncy way to travel but an interesting experience. The trains arrive at Bagan Railway Station which again is about 20 minutes by taxi to Old Bagan and New Bagan. The buses arrive at Shwe Pyi Bus Terminal which is located close to the town of Nyaung U. From here, about 20 minutes taxi transfer to Old Bagan and New Bagan. Boats from Mandalay arrive at the Nyaung U jetty. As well as fast boats, there’s a slow boat twice a week that takes about 15 hours but avoid taking them in the dry season as they occasionally get stuck on sandbanks.

How much does it cost to explore the temples of Bagan

A ticket to explore the Bagan Archeological Zone costs K25,000 kyat (about $18 USD) and is valid for five days.

Phenomenal photo essay! You really captured the temples of Bagan well. Although, I’ve seen many temples in SE Asia, I’ve yet to witness the ones in Bagan. I have a feeling they may be the most impressive of all.

Incredible photos Jonathon; every last one. Bagan is a great subject. I certainly agree that it is one of the worlds finest sights. It has been 16 years since I was there in Myanmar so love seeing and reading your posts about it.

Visiting the Bagan Temples in Myanmar

The city of Bagan is located in Myanmar (formerly Burma), a country not yet fully opened to mass tourism that is changing fast. Bagan was the capital of the Pagan kingdom between the 9th and 13the centuries and the city is famous for the Bagan temples.

There were over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries built in this city. But currently, there are only 2200 Bagan temples and pagodas present in the city. If you are planning to include Bagan in your Myanmar itinerary , then you cannot miss out on exploring these sacred temples here.

How to Reach Bagan

Taking a night bus from Yangon is the most ideal and convenient way to reach Bagan. This way, you not only save money but you save time as well. Get the 8 PM bus from Yangon so that you reach Bagan next day early morning around 5 AM.

What to Wear when visiting Bagan Temples

In Bagan, footwear and socks are prohibited in all temples. The entrance to several of these temples is littered with shops selling trinkets and counterfeit CK One perfumes, Revlon lippies, and what have you.

One would wonder which one of disobeying the shoe and sock rule or purchasing counterfeit knick-knacks at the door of a holy temple is really sinful. Or if Buddha simply just enjoyed shopping barefoot.

Apart from that, women are supposed to keep their shoulders and knees covered while visiting the temples. So, you can carry a shawl to the temple to cover your head and shoulders when needed.

Customs of Bagan Temples

Inside the temples, women frantically rub each and every Buddha’s hands and knees before touching their faces and necks with their Buddha-impregnated hands. They then proceed to the nearby lipstick counter, happy to spend a few kyats on counterfeit cosmetics after receiving Buddha’s blessing. Buddhism and consumerism do rhyme, after all.

Most of these Bagan temples and pagodas are managed by the local families. And it is a sort of custom to tip them for opening the pagoda for sunrise and staying till sunset to close it.

Traveling Around Bagan Temples

Every morning, zombie-clad electric bikes glide silently in the dark at 14 km/h, everyone in the search of their own secret temple from which to perch themselves for sunrise. Boys with flashlights keen for a dollar or two lead the way to little-known viewpoints where, if you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself alone or with just a couple of other travelers, more than likely of the French sort. And before you, as the curtain of the night pulls up, low and behold, the most magical spectacle you have seen in a while.

You can join the locals on bicycles and explore Bagan and the different temples around here. But one thing that no one should miss out on is the Hot Air Balloon ride in Bagan. It is one of the most unforgettable experiences ever. Soar above the Bagan temples and pagodas early morning and watch the sunrise slowly, giving a magical glow to the pagodas.

Renting an e-bike is also a great way to visit the Bagan temples. It is speedy and cheap and you will love riding on it early morning, before the sunrise.

Must-Visit Bagan Temples

If you wish to experience a beautiful sunrise, then Lowka Oushang is the best temple to visit. For sunset, North Guny temple would be the ideal choice. Made out of white stone, Ananda Temple is one of the top Bagan temples that you simply cannot miss out on. This temple is huge, symmetrical, and has a gorgeous exterior.

Bu Paya Temple is another good choice which is located next to the river and is a great place for watching sunsets as well. You will find a big gold stupa here and the temple busy with Buddhist worshippers. Manuha Temple is another great temple that is visited a lot by the locals and is one of the authentic Bagan temples to visit.

Note: Earlier, many pagodas were open for climbing but since 2018 most of these pagodas have been closed off for climbing. There might be still a few pagodas that you can climb to enjoy the views but these are very few in number.

For a closer stay to Bagan temples, Old Bagan offers many luxury options. And in New Bagan, there are new hotels and accommodations available.

Plan a trip to Bagan - 2 to 3 days itineraries

Start planning, best known temples and pagodas list, tips for traveling in bagan.

Bagan, a historical ancient city of Myanmar(Burma), a Buddhist cultural relic, and a famous tourist resort, is located on the west bank of the Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar.

The ideal time-frame for a first trip to Bagan is 2–3 days, for seeing pagodas and the spectacular sunrise or sunset. Investigate the historic pagoda jungle by horse-driven cart, enjoying the sunset from the top of a pagoda. Do not miss the hot-air-balloon ride over the Bagan plains at sunrise – definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

For many foreigners, Bagan is the gateway for them to start learning about Myanmar, and some of them even learn more about Bagan than they do of the country as a whole.

As for the locals, Bagan is where their pride comes from, and they always say that Bagan is the landmark of their country.

Between the 11th and 13th centuries, about 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were built in the Bagan plains. But at present, only 2,200 temples and pagodas still remain to tell you about its history.

No one can guarantee that the remaining temples or pagodas are free from any geologic hazard, so the city deserves a visit before they become history too.

Imagine ascending in a hot-air balloon over 2,000 pagodas and temples that are scattered across the 25-square-kilometer plains, just like gemstones dropped on a jade plate. That may be one of the most memorable moments in your life.

It was reported that the Myanmar government will submit its draft application to UNESCO's World Heritage Center in September 2017. If the application and the inspection go well, the Bagan Archaeological Zone may become the first World Heritage Site in Myanmar in 2019.

Don't miss the chance to get close to the next World Heritage Site.

If you travel by regular means, such as private car or bike, you may soon get temple fatigue.

However, if you take other forms of transport, such as a hot-air balloon, horse-drawn cart, or cruise, when visiting them it will make your tour more interesting and allow you to enjoy the beauty of Bagan from different perspectives.

What can't be missed

Enjoy sunrises or sunsets on the pagodas

In September 2017, Myanmar will formally submit the application to the UNESCO's World Heritage Center and, in order to protect the temples and pagodas while the application goes through, the activity of climbing up the pagodas may be slowly banned.

In December 2016, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyialso appealed to the tourists to stop climbing on the pagodas.

That is to say, being able to climb up a temple or pagoda to watch the sunrise or sunset will also become part of Bagan's history.

Enjoy a sunrise from a hot-air balloon

A hot-air balloon ride is not a budget-friendly experience but most people consider it to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is also the only way to experience the breathtaking scale of Bagan's historical district.

When the hot-air balloon gently takes off into the morning sky, everything is covered by the dark. But when the balloon unceasingly ascends and is flying, the sun's rays slowly break through the clouds, and the outlines of the temples and pagodas gradually appear. The sun rises slowly, and the view becomes wider and wider.

The mist embraces the temples and pagodas, just like a fairyland. The sunshine son the red-brick temples and pagodas, and they look as though they are twin kling with golden lights.

It's not only spectacular but also magical. When you are flying over the historical district, it's like you are engaging in dialogues with history.

The flight will definitely be safe and smooth with Western pilots and modern equipment. The pilots are all exceptionally qualified. They will also be considerate and rotate the balloon so that everybody can see the red-brick temples whilst the other balloons are dotted in the sky around you.

Travel by different means

If you are afraid of seeing too many temples and pagodas, which might give you aesthetic fatigue, traveling by different means, such as private car, cycling, hot-air balloon, horse-drawn cart, or even trekking, may pull you slightly out of this type of fatigue.

These are the different ways to show you the beauty of Bagan from different angles, and each of them has its own merits.

Day 1 pagodas and sunset

Bagan arrival

Proposal 1: Visit pagodas in the afternoon and before the sunset, by boarding a boat and cruising across the Irrawaddy River. The boatman will prepare some refreshments and the boat will reach the center of the river to stop before sunset.

You will be away from the noise and dust, quietly sitting in the boat, watching the glittering river, enjoying delicious snacks, listening to the wind blowing over the trees and the lake as well as the birdsong. When the sun slowly sinks, the clouds become colorful due to the reflection of the sunlight.

Proposal 2: Visit pagodas in the afternoon by horse-drawn cart. The surrounding pagodas are all more than 800 years old and there is no sign of modernization.

As the horse-drawn cart gallops through the forest of temples, the dust is blowing and the hooves are clattering.Imagine you have stepped into a time tunnel and are witnessing history.

One hour before the sunset, you can climb up a high pagoda, such as the Shwezigon Pagoda, and wait for one of the most breathtaking sunsets of your life.

Day 2 Sunrise and pagodas

There are two ways to enjoy the sunrise in Bagan: climb up a pagoda or fly in a hot-air balloon.

If you prefer to watch the sunrise on a pagoda, the best time to leave your hotel is at about 6 am. If you prefer to enjoy the sunrise from a different angle, then a hot-air balloon adventure is highly recommended.

You will be collected from your hotel at about 5:20 am and, at the launch site, there will be fruit and cakes as well as coffee. When the balloon ascends with the sun, the breathtaking site of stupa after stupa will appear through the delicate mist, which will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After the balloon has landed, champagne and pastries will be served to celebrate the safe landing and a certificate will also be awarded to you to celebrate your courage. This will be one of the highlights of your trip to Bagan, as well as to Myanmar.

The Asia Highlights team has handpicked some of the 2,200 pagodas, which are either the most famous of the temples or the most distinctive. In short, they are absolutely not to be missed for your Bagan trip.

1. Shwezigon Pagoda

This standswith Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon as one of the sacred pagodas in Myanmar. It's the most efficacious pagoda in Bagan, and the prayers are the most frequently answered. It is the oldest pagoda in Bagan and the best pagoda from which to enjoy the sunset.

2. Thatbyinnyu Phaya

This is the highest pagoda, standing at 67 meters. It used to be the best place to watch a sunrise and sunset; however, in order to protect the pagoda, the stairs to the top have been blocked.

3. Ananda Temple

This features a standing statue of Buddha with perfect proportions. However, since September 2016, a large-scale repair has ruined its natural beauty.

4. Dhammayangyi Temple

This is the biggest temple in Bagan. The temple was built by King Narathu to make up for his sins of killing his father, King Alaungsitha, but it was not finished until Narathu was assassinated.

5. Gubyaukgyi/Gubyauknge Temple

Famous for its exquisite murals, this temple has 547 well-preserved paintings depicting stories of Buddha's previous lives.

6. Sulamani Temple

This temple is one of the most frequently visited in Bagan. It is famous for its interior decoration.

7. Htilominlo Temple

This is the last Burma-style temple in Bagan.

It's usually very hot at noon in Bagan. It's a good choice to choose a restaurant to enjoy lunch or to go back to your hotel for a swim in the pool.

You need to stand barefoot or sit on the cold ground while waiting for the sunrise, so it's necessary to take warm clothing.

Do not hide your excitement from the camera when taking a trip in a hot-air balloon. If you ask politely, other passengers will take a photo of you, which will be a good memory for you.

2024 update: Myanmar is still going through a period of civil unrest, according to the US State Dept. at travel.state.gov. Travelers are asked to “reconsider traveling to Myanmar (Burma) due to armed conflict and the risk of wrongful detention of foreigners. The Travel Advisory for Myanmar (Burma) was renewed on July 24, 2023, as “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” For more information on this topic as well as developments, please visit the US Dept. of State website .

Bagan lives up to its captivating expectation and that’s why it’s part of any Myanmar trip! We did our research beforehand, somewhat, but it couldn’t have even prepared us for the variety of temples and pagodas to see, views for sunset and sunrise and the adventure of getting around the Bagan area.

Is Bagan worth visiting?

Bagan is worth visiting if you want to go to the #1 most popular attraction in Myanmar. Bagan is a collection of 2000 Buddhist pagodas, stupas and temples scattered across a flat area near the Irrawaddy River (alternatively spelled as the Ayeyarwady River).

Should I skip Bagan in my Myanmar itinerary?

Bagan is not worth visiting if you do not do well in the heat, if this type of attraction does not interest you or if you’d rather be engaging in adventure sports like hiking, or beaches. From what we saw, the Bagan region does not have much well-known outdoor activity aside from exploring the acres and acres of temples scattered on the plain.

If you choose to go, we do recommend that you visit Bagan first (after your city of entry) in a Myanmar itinerary. It’s smart to visit Bagan first and cool off afterward at Inle Lake, for example, as we mention in our Inle Lake travel guide .

Is Bagan popular for tourists?

No longer somewhere where you can actually avoid tourists , Bagan is indeed popular. For visitors to Bagan these days, the first thing you will probably note is that Bagan has experienced a very quick increase in popularity, and for that reason, there is a lot of less-than-charming development.

There’s an incredible amount of hotels to choose from, lots of restaurants to eat in, lots of tour options, lots of English and lots of visitors.

Why should you go to Bagan?

Having seen photos of Bagan on Instagram and online for the past seven or eight years, I knew this is somewhere I wanted to go. Bagan is a very unique place you can visit in Myanmar, and because there’s no specific temple to visit or specific way to take your trip, this is a really flexible experience to have.

We did meet travelers who skipped Bagan, for the reason above; they wanted to focus more on hiking, beaches and cities. For this reason, it’s up to you.

How do you get to Bagan from Yangon?

In our experience, taking a night bus was ideal! We left Yangon at 8 pm and arrived at 5 am in Bagan. See more about night bus travel at our Myanmar travel guide .

Is there a right way to visit Bagan?

Bagan can be slightly overwhelming due to the sheer number of pagodas, stupas and temples and that their locations are rarely walking distance from one another. From looking at a map, there’s no way to logically visit them all, and there’s even few ways to logically visit the ones you want without some pre-planning or going with a tour guide.

Remember: use minimalism techniques in your travel appetite and keep in mind you don’t have to see it all. I found that the best way to avoid being overwhelmed was to figure that there was no way I was going to be able to visit all the pagodas — I wasn’t even going to be able to see all the most famous ones.

If you consider Bagan an adventure with no ‘right way’ of seeing the places, then you’ll be fine and enjoy the experience of seeing this unique historical place.

What should I wear in Bagan?

What to wear in bagan.

Bagan is very hot, all year round. By ‘very hot,’ I mean temperatures of 92-96 degrees F during the day and a real feel of 106 F (this was what my Google Pixel told me). During the day, it’s not humid, so you feel kind of fried. At night, there’s a slight humidity that comes out, and that lasts until the end of sunrise.

Because Bagan is so hot, you’ll want to wear light, airy and breathable clothes. You’ll also want to keep in mind that entering the largest temples will require covering shoulders and usually covering legs (both men and women). The temples are places where Buddhist visitors will pray, and where locals go to pray as well. For this reason, it’s best to be prepared to respect the Buddhist custom of conservative dress.

What should women wear in Bagan?

So, what should you wear? Every day, I wore a maxi dress that was strapless or spaghetti-strap on top, and hit between my knees and ankles at the bottom. For visiting temples that had a dress code, I simply put on my sarong or shawl that I was carrying around for the day. This is perfectly acceptable.

What to wear at Buddhist pagodas Ananda Temple Bagan Myanmar Burma

What should men wear in Bagan?

Dan wore shorts and a T-shirt every day, and at temples, he would put on the longyi that we bought at a local shop in Yangon’s Chinatown . He kept this in his backpack for when it was required.

As soon as we left the temple grounds, we were able to wear whatever we wanted again, as we rode around the Bagan region either on E-bike, bicycle rentals or with a tuk-tuk driver.

How do you get around Bagan?

Bagan itself is a big region and making walking less of an option than the others we’ll list. Among the following options, we tried out three. We found various travelers mentioning the use of Maps.me, which you can learn about in our tools for travelers .

If you choose to go around on your own, note that having downloaded offline maps or a Google Fi plan will help with mobile data.

Rental bicycle

You can rent a bicycle from your accommodation or from a shop and bicycle around Bagan. We tried this, and saw lots of visitors doing it as well.

  • Pros: it’s a great way to be sustainable and to exercise your legs! Also, bicycles are free to take out for a day at most hostels and guesthouses that own 5 to 10 of them.
  • Cons: Once you’re off the main roads that connect the towns, the dirt roads are not so fun when you’re on a bicycle, and, if you experience a rental bike that is not maintained and needs a tune-up, it’ll make it even less fun. Another con is that you won’t be getting around so fast.

E-Bike, moto or scooter

Anywhere else, I’d refer to an E-bike as a scooter, but in Myanmar, they are called E-bikes. You will see signs for E-bike rentals, and this is the preferred word to use for the type of scooter that’s similar to a motorbike, but probably goes a little slower and is more usable for someone who’s less experienced in riding motorized bikes.

I pictured an E-bike to be an actual electronic bike, which I’ve seen in NYC, but no — it’s what you’d picture to be a scooter.

If you’ve never ridden a scooter or E-bike before, you’ll want to practice before you start driving among the locals on the main roads and dirt roads. For anyone who has done this before, it’s simple, but if it is your first time, definitely be cautious and be sensitive to your safety!

  • Pros: You can go faster than a bicycle. Also, the fees are usually very affordable, like 3000 Kyat ($1.43 USD) for a few hours. Lastly, you’ll be able to explore freely and independently.
  • Cons: You’ll need to trust yourself riding one, and, E-bikes don’t do so well going through sand or uneven dirt roads.

Planning to ride motos often around Myanmar? Consider getting travel insurance with World Nomads or SafetyWing to save you in case of an accident.

Get around Bagan with an ebike rental Bagan Myanmar Burma

Tuk-Tuk Driver

The morning before we experimented with E-bike rentals, we ordered a tuk-tuk ride to a sunrise spot. The Baobabed Hostel desk staff helped us organize and had a driver in mind.

  • Pros: We didn’t have to worry about navigating and finding our way in the dark, before sunrise, to any spot. Come to think of it, this was really convenient! Also, our driver waited for us while we hung out at the pagoda taking as many photos as we wanted to. Lastly, this was totally safe!
  • Cons: The fee we had agreed upon was for ‘sunrise only, and in visiting a pagoda afterward, the driver charged us additional money. We were able to negotiate.

Guided Tour of Bagan or Tour Package

We did not take any guided tours, so we can’t speak to any recommendations or the quality of the tours in Bagan; we did, however, see lots of guides during our time there, and they were speaking German, Spanish, English and French! Wow!

  • Pros: You will learn way more than you would on your own, and the guides will take you to the best spots, all without you having to do any work to find them or stress over where they are.
  • Cons: If you’re into adventuring on your own, this is not the option for you.

Hot air balloon ride in Bagan

Before we left home, friends said, “OH! You’ll HAVE to do the hot air balloon over Bagan! It’s unforgettable!” We said sure, yes, sounds great, and then we learned about the price tag.

Completely unaligned with what other things cost in Myanmar (beers for $1, hostel privates for $30, meals for $2 and overnight buses for $22), hot air balloon rides over Bagan, which have a duration of 45-60 minutes, cost between $320 and $400. Yes, you read correctly - this is probably the most expensive thing you can do in the whole country!

Nevertheless, we saw lots of tourists dish out money for this unique experience. If you have it in your trip budget , then take a hot air balloon ride! Lucky for us, we were able to take a hot air balloon ride recently over Teotihuacan outside Mexico City, so we didn’t feel like we were missing too much.

  • Pros: This is a beautiful, unique and exciting way to see the Bagan pagodas from above.
  • Cons: It might cost you more money than you spend on everything else during your trip. We preferred saving money while traveling and supporting locals.

How many days do you need in Bagan?

We received various tips for how many days we ‘needed’ to spend in Bagan during our planning, before we left home. Friends who had done speed trips to Myanmar saw Bagan in one day. Some friends recommended two full days. Some recommended three or four.

The ‘tourist ticket’ that will be charged when you enter the Bagan region at a checkpoint upon arrival by your bus, shared taxi or flight is equivalent to approximately $15 and is good for five days, so we considered that the real limit.

Is three days enough for visiting Bagan?

We found that three days was the perfect amount of time in Bagan, giving us opportunities for three potential sunrises and three potential sunsets. During our time of travel, in October, the sun would set around 5:30 pm and would rise around 6 am.

Lucky for our planning and with our flexible three days, we actually were so tired from having arrived on night bus that we napped and slept through our first opportunity to see a Bagan sunset. Fortunately, we were able to see the sunset from the pagodas on both following days.

What to do during the day in Bagan (because it’s so hot)

We were perplexed about what to do during the day in Bagan because it was so hot. What was everyone doing?

Avoid bicycling during the hottest hours

Our first day, in a rookie move, we rented bicycles and figured we should take a ride to the nearby town of Nyaung-U, where I knew there were a bunch of hostels, guesthouses and restaurants. Our free bicycle rentals were not too great, with no gears, flat-ish tires and janky pedals, and biking in the heat was tiring and frustrating.

We were sweaty, riding through clouds of street dust and our sunscreen was dripping off our faces. We found out that this is what you should NOT be doing during the day in Bagan!

Take a nap or enjoy your hostel’s AC

The next two days we did one of two things from the hours of 9 am to 3 pm: napped, or hung out in our hostel lobby with WiFi, AC, coffee and the option to order some smoothies. For lunch on one of the days, we walked a short distance to a ‘fancy’ Thai restaurant, where we had lunch, despite not being so hungry.

It was something to do during these hours of extreme heat. On our last day, we played pool in the hostel lobby with two Burmese guys who were really nice and played a good game of pool as well.

Can you go out during the hottest hours in Bagan?

It seemed like other travelers were either braving the heat and seeing temples despite the high temperatures (maybe they were pressed for time?) or napping in their rooms. Engaging in any type of physical activity in what felt like a desert was too exhausting.

Where to stay in Bagan

Hotel or hostel? Choosing accommodation type is entirely up to you, but then, which town of Bagan do you choose?

Any website will tell you that Bagan has three main regions for accommodations: New Bagan, Old Bagan and Nyaung-U. Without having researched this at all, we went by hostel ratings and went with Baobabed Hostel Bagan .

Upon arriving, we found out that it was located along the side of the road that connects Nyaung-U with Old Bagan, and wasn’t really in either town. The hostel property was in a slight dead zone, town-wise, but faced an E-bike rental shop, was next to another hotel and had a restaurant-laundry service-souvenir shop to the other side.

If you got on a bicycle and rode even five minutes, you’d probably see a pagoda in a field, which was pretty cool. Where else in the world can you do that? For this reason, we didn’t mind not staying in the center of any of the three towns.

What’s the difference between the Bagan towns?

Which is the best Bagan town for travelers? As for the three towns, Old Bagan is the oldest (hence the name), New Bagan was built in order to support more tourism and is built in a grid pattern of small streets and Nyaung-U is a cluster of streets with guesthouses and some shops. All are dusty. All are hot. All have proximity to temples, so you can’t go wrong, no matter what you choose.

Best sunset and sunrise spots in Bagan (after climbing ban)

Once upon a time before 2019, you could climb all the pagodas, temples and stupas if you could figure out a way how to. During our visit, we found out that this was no longer the case, and most blogs we read for our research listed heaps of climbable temples and pagodas for wonderful views that were no longer options for us due to new (somewhat enforced) regulations.

We found sunrise and sunset spots by asking hostel staff, who were most aware of the current situation and climbing ban. They were able to recommend a few options, but for times when they ran out of ideas, we ventured off on our own and sometimes lucked out.

The first morning, we went to Sulamuni Manmade Sunset Hill , which was built as a man-made hill to be a tourist viewpoint once the climbing ban was in place. We didn’t think the view was so impressive, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

The second morning, we went to Mimalaung Kyaung Temple , which was recommended by the hostel staff at Baobabed . This pagoda indeed had a viewing deck, and it wasn’t overcrowded or anything. We were the first ones there, at 5:30 am, and got to see the starry sky. Use our guide for how to take photos at night .

How to take star photos at night pagoda temple Bagan Myanmar Burma

By 6:00 am there were about 15-20 visitors, but not much more. All things considered, this wasn’t bad at all.

Woman at Mimalaung Kyaung Temple for sunrise view of balloons Bagan Myanmar Burma

For sunset on day two, we were recommended to get in touch with the father of one of the girls in the hostel in her village, which we did! After giving us a village tour, he took us to a collection of renovated pagodas outside the village, and took us to one we could climb via an internal stone staircase. To our surprise, we were joined by three other travelers who found the same place.

Secret pagodas for view of sunset Bagan Myanmar Burma

For sunrise on day three, this is when we kinda-sorta got scammed, as we detailed more in our Myanmar travel guide . We had taken a rented E-bike down the dirt road near the hostel and were feeling a dab lost, until a man on a motorbike asked if we wanted a recommendation of a sunrise spot, and we naturally said yes.

He led the way to a cluster of secret pagodas and stupas we never otherwise would have found, and after the sun rose, he brought us into a pagoda and showed us paintings that he was selling, saying, of course, he really wanted us to buy one. We actually did buy one, because they were nice, and we negotiated a price. It’s currently hanging in our living room and reminds us of this day.

For sunset on day three, we chose to stay close to the hostel and aimed to find a spot within a 10-minute radius. We had seen a few clusters of pagodas, some more populated with tourists than others, and pulled into the driveway of a collection of pagodas and a larger temple (which turned out to be Khaymingha Pagoda).

Dan and I split up and went to find good photos, and I found a lone pagoda , with a location pin, facing a field with a view toward the West and some stupas that were outlined against the sky. It’s here that we saw a fiery sunset with another couple who was on the hunt for this type of view. In conclusion, sometimes you have to find your own views and luck out in your own way.

Can you climb the temples and pagodas in Bagan?

Since 2018, you can only climb a select few. Below, we’ll share the locations of the pagodas we were able to climb. We saved the locations of them

Which temples have a good view in Bagan?

While we didn’t get to climb so many pagodas because of the ban, we did find a small pagoda with no name that was a few feet on a tiny hill above a field, and it was here that we watched an epic sunset with three stupas outlined against the sky. The location in Google Maps is here.

Mimalaung Kyaung was a great place to see sunrise, and because there were only 20 other visitors there by the time the sun was up, it wasn’t overwhelming or crowded at all.

Best Instagrammable temples to visit in Bagan

In a combination of avoiding massive tourist groups and seeing a variety of Buddhist temple architecture, we visited three temples that were very much alive with worshipers, and made great photo locations. We’ll detail them here.

Ananda Temple

Well worth a visit because it’s been renovated in the past few decades and is made of white stone, this temple is pretty big, and built symmetrically, so we had some fun finding our way out. There were some tour groups here, but not so many, and there’s parking for your E-bike right outside the entrance. There are no epic views to be had because there’s nowhere to climb and no lookout points, but we liked walking around the exterior.

Bu Paya (Bupaya Pagoda)

Bu Paya has a big gold stupa and faces the river. You could alternatively go here for sunset. At the time when we went, it was busy with locals and other Buddhist visitors who were praying.

Manuha Temple

Manuha Temple was recommended to us by locals, so you know it’s legit! It was really busy with Buddhist worshippers and seemed more authentic than the others, which were rebuilt and renovated to look beautiful for tourism (it seemed).

Shwesandaw Pagoda

Shwesandaw Pagoda was formerly one of the popular pagodas to climb, but alas, no more — all its stairways have been closed off and maybe it’s even lost its popularity for that reason. We went here after sunrise and liked being some of the only visitors. This made it a really serene visit. We also liked the pagodas that framed the dirt road, even more as a scene for taking photos.

Which temples can you still climb in Bagan?

If you are defining temples as the largest and most famous temples, we did not hear that any are still able to be climbed. We did not climb any. We climbed smaller, shorter pagodas (and got some solid views), which we’re mentioning below.

Since 2018 (so we heard while were in Bagan), many pagodas are now closed for climbing. We visited Shwesandaw Pagoda, listed as a pagoda to climb from reports before 2018, and it was gated off for climbing. We were the only foreign travelers there.

As mentioned, we did not find so many pagodas to climb because of the ban, but a local brought us to this pagoda that has an inside staircase and you can sit on the top platform (hope you’re not afraid of heights!). This pagoda is in a cluster of pagodas outside the village of Myin Ka Bar Village, Sein Gone Quarter, Bagan.

Thank you for subscribing!

In college, there are many instances where you may be required to write a 250-word essay – your application, exam questions, small writing prompts, etc. A 250-word limit may seem like a novel to some, but others find it difficult to get their point across with so few words. In this guide, we will look at a 250-word essay example, along with tips on how to write a great 250-word essay.   Bonus: Need to write a longer essay? See this guide on how to write a 500-word essay

The Basic Format of a 250-Word Essay

All essays consist of the same three parts: an introduction with a thesis, a body paragraph or body paragraphs that support the thesis, and a concluding paragraph that summarizes the overall essay.

In 250 words, you will most likely have 3-4 paragraphs in total, each with 50-100 words. This will allow for 3-5 concise but detailed sentences per paragraph.

A Step-by-Step 250-Word Essay Example

To help visualize this process, let’s go ahead and write a simple 250-word essay.  You’ll see our writing sample in green and our explanation of what we did (and what can be done) with each section in normal text.

Without further ado, let’s get started on our essay!

TOPIC:  How has your family upbringing influenced your educational goals?

Step 1 – Write Your Thesis

Your thesis is the first thing you should consider in your essay. Simply put, it’s the main idea of your essay that will control everything else you write. If you could summarize the question in just one sentence, how would you do it?

For our topic   How has your family upbringing influenced your educational goals?  our thesis will be:

My parents saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals.

Step 2 – Write Your Introduction

In the introduction, the first sentence can be a broad or general statement that sets the tone for the piece. It is usually supported by a second sentence that leads into the thesis. The optional third sentence may pose a question that the thesis aims to answer, or it may prompt the reader to think about the topic in a different light. The final sentence of the intro paragraph clearly establishes the thesis.

As a general rule of thumb, the introduction should go from broad to specific, sentence by sentence, gradually leading up to your thesis. Here’s a sample example of an introductory paragraph.

Parents are supposed to push you past your goals, or at least, that’s what I always believed. I was raised in the generation of “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” My parents did not follow that philosophy, and they saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals.

Word count:  Introductory paragraph, 64 words.

Step 3 – Write The Body Paragraph(s)

Next, we’ll continue with the body paragraph. Remember, body paragraphs should support the thesis and be about 3-5 sentences or 50-100 words long. In a short essay you may opt for only one body paragraph but in a longer one you may need more.

So how should your body paragraphs support your thesis? Think of each body paragraph as an argument that supports it.

Working with our thesis   “My parents never saw the value of formal education and that’s what lead me to my educational goals” , then each paragraph could be about   how not seeing the value of formal education led to the writer pursuing it.

For example, maybe the writer didn’t want to end up in the same work as their parents. Or maybe it was the parents’ lack of belief in the writer that pushed them to pursue a better future.

Let’s have a look at what a body paragraph can look like for our 250 word essay.

From as far back as I can remember, I knew I didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of my parents, at least not when it came to work. My father had worked on the family farm all his life and my mother had been a housewife since graduation. They were both content with the simplicity of their lives and wanted the same for me. I remember my father telling me that college was “expensive and a waste of four years”.  I knew however, that I wanted a career in the city that would be more challenging than simple farm life could provide. The only way to make that possible would be through formal education and a college degree.

Word count:  Body paragraph 119 words. Total essay is now 181 words.

Step 4 – Summarize with a Conclusion

The final paragraph is the conclusion. You may start this paragraph with “To summarize,” “As evident by X, Y, and Z,”  or a similar statement that highlights the biggest points in your essay. Use the conclusion paragraph to sum up the main point of your essay using different words. The last sentence can be something broad that leaves the reader wondering. Let’s see how we can write a conclusion for our sample essay.

While my parents may not understand the value of formal education, I know it is essential for my future. This has helped me immensely, by making me realize that without strong parental support, I’m the only one who’s responsible for my own goals. In a way this has been the strongest source of motivation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Notice how we summarize the main point of the essay in the first sentence. We then connect the first sentence to the a conclusion we arrive at. Finally we end in an optimistic tone by stating how this has been helpful and we are grateful. Unlike the introduction paragraph, which flows from broad sentences to specific, a conclusion generally flows the opposite way, from specific sentences to broader concepts.

Word count: Concluding paragraph 61 words. Total essay is now 242 words.

Sure, we came up 8 words short. But being that close should not be considered an issue. If for some reason you are required to write 250 words minimum, you can make the essay longer by sprinkling in a few extra words.

The Entire 250-word Essay  Altogether

Parents are supposed to push you past your goals, or at least, that’s what I always believed. I was raised in the generation of “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” My parents did not follow that philosophy, and they saw little value in a formal education. It was their lack of passion that led me to my educational goals. While my parents may not understand the value of formal education, I know it is essential for my future. This has helped me immensely by making me realize that without strong parental support, I’m the only one who’s responsible for my own goals. In a way this has been the strongest source of motivation. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Should I Write More Than 250 Words or Less Than 250 Words?

When a professor or college entry application asks for a “250 word essay,” 250 words is generally a rough guide. No one is going to fail you if you go over or under the limit by a few words. We’d say a good gauge is plus or minus 50 words. As a general rule of thumb though, try to stay as close to 250 words as possible without going too far over or under.

Essay Writing Tips

Here are some quick tips for writing a great 250-word essay:

  • Write the first draft from start to finish without any pauses. This will make the writing sound fluid, and you can make adjustments after that.
  • Avoid over-editing your work. Ideally, you should take a long pause between editing sessions so you can clear your head and come back with a fresh perspective.
  • Try not to think about the word count too much. Once you get in the habit of writing four 3-5 sentence paragraphs, you’ll find your words naturally get close to 250.
  • Don’t throw fluff sentences in your essay. Professors see right through those. Instead, think of an additional sentence to enhance the support in your body paragraphs.
  • If you feel like you have concisely and sufficiently answered the question below the word count, trust your gut. Most instructors will value quality over quantity.

The more 250-word essays you write, the easier they will become. Feel free to practice with free essay prompts online to train your brain to write with this rhythm. You’ll soon be able to whip out 250 words without checking your word count!

The Best of Bagan in 2 Days

Myanmar (also known as Burma) has been one of those mysterious countries that most people know very little about and few people choose to travel to. In the past, the military control of the country had most tourists afraid or unwilling to venture into the South East Asian country, and those that did dare to explore the country were restricted on where they could and couldn’t visit.

Since the November 2015 elections things have become a little easier and more accessible. There are still no-go zones but the country as a whole is now seen as safer, and over the past few years has become a very popular tourist spot. Having visited myself in 2015, I know exactly why. The people are amazing and although the parts of the country I visited were more touristic than I expected , it still retains a lot of it’s old-world magic. Especially Bagan. Without a doubt, Bagan is high on my list of absolute favourite places and is a must visit for anyone travelling to Myanmar. I suggest spending at least 2 days in Bagan- here are my recommendations.

Bagan in 2 Days

How to Get to Bagan

There are four main ways to arrive to Bagan. The most expensive is by plane which arrived in Nyaung U, about a 30-minute drive to Old Bagan. It is important to note that, at this time, the Nyaung U airport is a domestic airport only.

There are plenty of bus options to Bagan as well; this is usually the cheapest option. There are different services and companies but many of them offer pick up and drop off at your hotel. Expect bus rides to be pretty bumpy, and depending on the service you choose, your bus may stop to pick up locals in smaller towns and villages.

The third option is to take the train. Burmese trains have quite the reputation, and not necessarily in a good way . Rides are bumpy and loud and there has been more than one story of baggage bouncing out the windows. However, those that have travelled by train say it’s an authentic Burmese experience that everyone should try at least once.

The final option is only available from Mandalay, and it is to take a boat down the river. The boat takes about 8-10 hours and leaves early in the morning to arrive in Bagan mid afternoon. Should you choose to take the boat make sure to arrive early to get a seat on the deck, and wear plenty of sunscreen because the sun is quite strong reflecting off the water. You should also bring a book or something to entertain you. This option does book up pretty quickly, so don’t leave it til the last minute.

Tip: The most picturesque part ride is the first hour or so and the last 20-30 minutes as you arrive in Bagan, so don’t nap during these times!

The view from the boat leaving Mandalay

**Note: Bagan is an archaeological zone. You will be charged a one time fee to enter the zone. This is not a scam- everyone has to pay or else you cannot enter. In return you will be given a ticket-make sure to keep it on you for the duration of your stay should you be checked.

Getting Around Bagan in 2 Days

If there’s one negative thing about Bagan it’s that is it definitely not walkable. However, being home to thousands of temples, you can’t really expect that it would be.

The cheapest option to get around is to rent a push-bike. But you better be in some seriously good shape to spend two days cycling through dusty dirt paths to see all the temples. Bagan is huge, and the temples are very spread out so push bikes are quite limiting and not recommended to those who want to see a lot.

The most common (and most fun) option is to rent an e-bike, basically a battery-powered moped. They can be rented everywhere for different prices depending on the size. E-bikes are the most convenient way to see Bagan and offer the most freedom. Beware: Batteries die regularly so it helps to have a phone and be able to call the number of where you rented it (on your key or the bike itself) for them to bring you another battery. If you don’t have a phone flag down a local- trust me, they are used to it and happy to help. *Tip: You may be able to bargain on a multi-day rental for a discount.

My e-bike gang

If you are uncomfortable driving an e-bike yourself you can always hire a driver/guide. There are three ways of doing this. 1) Hire a motorbike guide (the cheapest option if you are travelling alone) 2) Hire a taxi or 3) Take a horse and cart ride. There are plenty of locals who act as guides for tourists so just ask other travellers who they have used or at your accommodations for suggestions.

Of course, you can also rent a car to explore yourself.

Where to Stay in Bagan for 2 Days

Bagan is divided into four main areas in which tourists can base themselves.

Nyuang U: This is where the airport, main bus station, train station, and boat from Mandalay arrive. It’s about 20-30 minutes outside of Old Bagan. There are plenty of accommodation options here- especially for budget travellers (also, one of the best spots to find ATMs!) However, although it is the most convenient area for getting in and out of Bagan, it’s the furthest from the attractions.

Old Bagan: The most expensive spot to stay, but also closest to the main temples. Old Bagan is located within stone walls and is a beautiful place to base yourself in. Most accommodation options here are higher end hotels.

Myinkaba: Not too far from Old Bagan, Myinkaba is a busier area best known for it’s lacquerware shops.

New Bagan: Created in the 1990s, it’s the newest place to stay and furthest south (still closer to main temples then Nyuang U). There are plenty of budget and mid-range accommodation options here, ATMs, shops, and restaurants (both traditional Burmese and western-style). It was where I chose to stay as it allowed easy access to the main temples near Old Bagan but also the less popular temples further east, which are definitely worth exploring.

Personally, I suggest choosing a place in Old Bagan or New Bagan. Need some suggestions? Take a look at:

The Best Things to do in Bagan in 2 Days

Bagan is known for it’s temples and pagoda’s, so that’s what you are here to see. There are literally thousands. At one point, when the kingdom was in it’s prime, it is estimated that there were 10,000 temples. Today however, after time, weather, and the earthquake of 1975, there are a little over 2000 temples and pagodas perfect for exploring.

Important: These temples may be old, and some may be ruins, but they are still holy and sacred places. DO NOT wear shoes or socks inside the temples. Women must also dress appropriately; this means keep your shoulders and knees covered. Please be respectful during your visit.

Must-see Pagodas and Temples in Bagan

MYANMAR (25 of 59)

A lot has changed with Bagan’s temples since my visit in 2015. When I visit we were encouraged to explore and even climb them. Now, however, climbing temples (even the ruins) is off limits to better protect these incredible landmarks. Please be respectful as you visit Bagan’s many temples.

Ananda : Nicknamed the “west minister abbey” of Myanmar, it’s one of the most beautiful and revered temples.

Dhammayangyi: The largest temple in Bagan; however only part of it is accessible. For an unknown reason much of the interior has been sealed behind brick walls.

Shwesandaw: The most popular place to view sunset. Legend says this pagoda holds a Buddha hair relic, it’s name means Holy Golden Hair

Shwezigon : One of the most popular pagodas among tourists and locals. Probably your best chance at seeing local monks. Note: As one of the most popular spots it’s where you are most likely to get taken advantage of. Shop owners will greet you and take your shoes for you to find when you return outside their shops so you buy something. There is also a dragon “scam” where locals will bring you to a part of the temple for a little ceremony and expect money from you. If you are ok with paying a few dollars for the experience it’s kind of neat, if not just say no thank you.

Thatbyinnyu: The tallest temple in Bagan.

Htilominlo: A beautiful red brick temple best known for the elaborate plaster mouldings.

Sulamani: A popular temple with many frescos on the interior.

Thambula: Known for it’s obvious Chinese influence

Nanda Pyin Nya: Nicknamed the painted temple- the inside of this small temple is covered in painting telling legends and stories. No photos allowed though to better preserve the paintings. If you are lucky, Tin Tin will be there to explain. *more about Tin Tin to come under the “Shopping” section of this guide.

Other Temples : Again, Bagan is filled with thousands of temples, so although the above temples and pagoda’s shouldn’t be missed, don’t forget to stop by and visit any interesting ones you pass by. There are too many to show on maps so embrace your inner Indiana Jones and go exploring!

I loved exploring Bagan’s temples by e-bike during my 2 day visit, but if you are looking for something a little more relaxed, check out this guide to Bagan which takes a more leisurely approach.

Where to See Sunrise in Bagan

Sunrise in Bagan

The ultimate experience here involves getting up super early to watch the sunrise in Bagan. For those who have the money, hot air balloon rides over the temples are an incredible way to start the day. However be prepared for fork out $300USD+ per person, and book well in advance to ensure your spot. Since climbing temples is no longer permitted, the hot air balloon ride will be your best bet for the spectacular Bagan sunrise views.

For those with slimmer wallets, don’t worry. You can still see the famous Bagan sunrise ground. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, you can no longer climb the temples for the view. While I am glad that the country is taking better care of the temples by not allowing this, it does make me a little sad since it was a highlight for me and made me feel like Indiana Jones. That being said, if I hadn’t been encouraged by locals, I don’t think I would have thought to climb what are actually religious structures anyway. So, while climbing temples for sunrise in Bagan remains one of my favouite memories, it really is for the best.

If you want to experience sunrise in Bagan for free, I suggest getting out into the fields. Bagan is relatively flat which means while you won’t have an elevated view, you will still be able to watch the balloons rise beside all the temples in the distance. When I visited, balloons came up from a couple different areas so ask at your accommodation if they know where the balloons will depart from and where you can best see nearby. Trust me, the locals and hotel/hostel staff know the best places for great views away from the main crowds.

You can also try the Nann Myint Viewing Tower. The structure itself is quite ugly against the ancient-temple filled landscape, but it does offer photogenic views you see of sunrise in Bagan.

Important tip: Hot air balloon season runs from October-April. So if you dream of hot air balloons during your sunrise in Bagan, make sure to plan your trip accordingly.

Minnathu Village

A small village where visitors can be shown different aspects of traditional Burmese country life. From farming to making the traditional Burmese thanaka. There’s also a restaurant on site. Although it is meant for tourists it’s not very touristic. It’s a free ‘attraction’ but tips are welcome.

Thanaka

**Tip: Bagan is large, so it’s best to divide your days to explore the sites closest to each other together. For example, if staying in New Bagan, explore the temples and pagodas of Old Bagan and area Day 1 and Day 2 go the opposite way.

Shopping in Bagan

Bagan isn’t exactly a shopping mecca, but if you are looking for a special souvenir there are a couple of options.

As mentioned earlier, Minnathu Village is known for it’s lacquerware stores. There are many, so shop around, but most of them are run by families that have been artisans for years. Their work is beautiful and there are all kinds of things to buy from tiny tea cups and dishes to wardrobes and tables. Some shops to accept credit cards but have a minimum, so it’s best to bring cash.

Sand painting are also a great souvenir and can be found for sale at every major temple. There are all kinds of prints from Buddha to monks to floral designs, however, if you shop around at the temples you will notice they are all the same. If you want something really unique, go see TinTin who, as mentioned above, can be found in the Nanda Pyin Nya temple. He is an incredible artist who bases his work off the artwork found in the temple, meaning it’s all original to him as he refuses to sell his work to other locals to replicate. He has sand paintings and sandstone carvings on canvasses for sale. They are the perfect souvenir as you can crumple them up small to fit in your bag and just iron them out at home. Note: You will pay more for TinTin’s work than the knock-offs. My sandstone elephant carving (pictured below) was 30USD. (This was 2015, so I hope he is still there!)

Sandstone elephant carving

Of course, there are plenty of other vendors as well, many of which set up shop in front of the temples. They will sell elephant pants, postcards, books, thanaka, and sometimes even their services as a guide. It’s up to you whether you choose to buy or not and haggling is always an option, but keep in mind that this is the vendor’s livelihood and although a dollar may not be much to you, it is to them . As in any other country, please do not give money to the young children.

If you Have More than 2 Days in Bagan

For me, two days was the perfect amount of time to explore Bagan before getting ‘templed out’. Ho,wever if you do have a third day I would suggest hiring a taxi for a day trip to Mt Popa and Salay. Salay is about 30 minutes away and home to some incredible monasteries. It’s more spiritually important to the Burmese than Bagan. Mt Popa is an extinct volcano overlooking Salay. You can also ask your driver to take you to the nearby Tuang Kalat Monastery, known as the gathering spot for Burmese spirits known as the “Nats”. There are plenty of myths and legends surrounding this monastery, giving it the nickname the Mt Olympus of Burma.

Bagan is also home to a few museums including a museum of archaeology that might be worth a visit should time allow.

Bagan is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been- so enjoy

A balloon ride in Bagan is high on our travel wishlist. Pinning this wonderful post so I can refer to it when I make it out there!

I didn’t have the budget to afford the balloon ride but from what others have said its a once in a lifetime experience!

Great informative post, Hannah! Pinning this for when I (hopefully) travel to Bagan this fall! 🙂

ah I hope you go! You will love it 😀

[…] I had to start my journey back to Canada for Christmas, I really only had time for two cities. Bagan was a must- there was no way I was missing those temples and sunrise moments that I had been […]

This post is so comprehensive for an introduction to Bagan! I can’t wait to see Bagan again in better weather =D

Hi hanna, as a first timer to explore outside my country and bagan was one of my bucket list. Thanks for this article its really helpful. But if you dont mind can you give me arleast a breakdown of how much it will cost for for bus from yangon to bagan?? And if there’s available hostels for backpackers instead of hotels??

Hi Farrah, I didn’t go to Yangon so I can’t tell you how much the bus would be. From what I remember though there were night busses, day busses, and more local vs more touristic (i.e. comfortable) ones. So you will have some choices. I don’t think any were very expensive. There are a couple hostels for sure- be sure to book in advance though because they fill up quickly.

It will cost around 20,000 MMK

Thanks to your tips I found this temple using maps.me. Quite creepy as I’ve traveled 5am alone and there was nothing but darkness on the way here (if not for the app I wouldn’t have found this). There were seven of us in the beginning but it eventually became 15 to 20 people by sunrise. So your blog may have reached to more people.

I’m glad you found it! This post gets quite a few hits so I guess it is growing a bit popular. Still, 20 people is better than the hundreds at the others!

Your post is really useful and inspiring. Thanks so much for your sharing!

Thanks Hannah, this was very useful not only on what to do/see but also an honest appraisal of duration of stay!

I didn’t get asked for one!

Ok. Thanks Hannah.

How to Write a Perfect 250-Word Essay With Samples and Tips

11 December 2023

last updated

In order to learn how to write a perfect 250-word essay, an academic undertaking requires an author to observe specific standards of academic writing. Basically, these standards include following the introduction-body-conclusion outline and using the MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago/Turabian, or any other format. In this case, students write the introductory paragraph that concludes with a thesis statement, which serves as the central pillar of entire papers. Moreover, a 250-word essay is different from a one-page paper in many ways, including formatting. While a one-page paper adopts the single-spacing format, a 250-word essay follows the double-spacing approach. Regardless of these differences, both types of essays must incorporate evidence to establish credibility. The evidence appears in body paragraphs and must align with the Sandwich Rule. In concluding essays, writers must restate the thesis and summarize the main themes without introducing new information.

Basic Principles

Writing is an exercise that requires an understanding of some basic rules of academic writing . In particular, these rules apply to any scholarly documents, where authors aim to present credible information on specific topics. Basically, writers should research widely on their topics and incorporate findings of research studies. In writing a 250-word essay, students should be specific on what they want to communicate if they intend essays to be scholarly texts. Unlike long papers that require authors to write an outline for purposes of organizing their thoughts, a 250-word essay is short. It only requires students to focus on the information they want to deliver. Hence, the use of sources in this type of essay is limited, and, if used, they must be relevant to the writer’s point of view.

Definition of a 250-Word Essay

By description, a 250-word essay is a short academic text that provides information on a specific topic. For an essay to meet the threshold of a scholarly text, writers must provide a thesis statement that captures the author’s central arguments or claims. In this case, anyone interested in knowing how long is a 250-word essay would only need to locate the writer’s thesis statement. Moreover, the structure of a 250-word essay entails an introductory paragraph, a body paragraph or paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Unless it is necessary, a writer may not provide headings and subheadings in this type of paper. Such work only covers a single page when written in the double-spaced format by considering how many pages is a 250-word essay. Therefore, a 250-word essay has from three to four paragraphs with minimal headings and no subheadings.

A 250-Word Essay Example: Healthy Lifestyle

If someone wants to understand what does a 250-word essay look like, check the sample:

Sample: Introduction

The growing cases of obesity in the United States have become a source of concern to health professionals and the government at all levels. Basically, this context has seen the medical community invest in research, with several studies highlighting the health risks that individuals face when they become obese. In turn, the findings of these studies show that a healthy lifestyle, such as eating healthy food and maintaining physical fitness, is the most effective intervention against becoming obese.

The word count of the introduction paragraph is 78 words .

Sample Body: Obese-Related Complications

The United States has a high number of fast-food restaurants, which contributes to the rising cases of obesity. Basically, this situation has predisposed a majority of Americans to junk food, especially teenagers and young professionals. For instance, several studies have established that obesity results from unhealthy diets, including fatty and junk food (evidence). In this case, these foods not only predispose individuals to being obese but also at risk of developing health complications. Moreover, the most notable obesity-related complications include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and others. In turn, the lack of physical exercise is also a factor contributing to the current trend of obesity.

The word count of the body paragraph is 107 words .

Sample: Conclusion

There is no doubt that, in order to reverse the current trend of obesity in the US, Americans must stop eating unhealthy foods and develop a habit of exercising regularly. Without regular physical exercises, the human body stores up fat that ends up blocking blood vessels and other complications. As for the recommendations, Americans must adopt healthy lifestyles to reverse the current trend of obesity.

The word count of the conclusion paragraph is 65 words .

Thus, introduction + body + conclusion parts = 78 + 107 + 65 words or 250-word essay.

Review of Writing a 250-Word Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

Paragraph 1: introduction with a thesis statement.

The first paragraph of the sample paper of the 250-word essay titled “Healthy Lifestyle” is the introduction. Basically, the opening section allows readers to know what the essay is all about. In turn, this part starts by establishing a context for the essay: the rising cases of obesity in the United States and the confirmation by research studies that obesity is a health risk. Then, the paragraph concludes with a thesis statement – maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In this case, the main sentence includes eating healthy food and maintaining physical fitness, being the most effective intervention to becoming obese. To make the statement significant, the writer bases these ideas on research findings. Moreover, the total word count for the introduction paragraph, without the title, is 78 words. Hence, the length makes the introduction part slightly shorter than the body paragraph, which is acceptable in academic writing.

Paragraph 2: Body

The second part of a 250-word essay is the body paragraph that talks about health complications associated with obesity. Just like in the introduction, the writer begins the paragraph by establishing a context, which is the proliferation of fast-food restaurants in the United States. This context helps students to understand the source of obesity in the country. Moreover, the author makes reference to research studies (evidence) on obesity to establish credibility in the text. As such, readers understand that whatever the writer talks about in the text is not informed by personal opinions but rather by research findings. In academic writing, this aspect makes a text reliable. Hence, one can use it as a reference when writing a paper or contributing to an argument. In summary, the body section, with a word count of 107 words, provides information that strengthens the thesis statement in the introduction.

Paragraph 3: Conclusion

The last paragraph in the essay is the conclusion, which marks the end of the essay. In academic writing, the conclusion of a 250-word essay does not provide new information. Instead, it takes the most significant themes in the body of the paper and links them with the thesis statement. In the above essay, the writer begins by making a firm observation based on the content of the body section, that is to stop obesity, while Americans must start eating healthy foods and exercising regularly. In turn, one can argue that the writer intends to establish the urgency of the central message. Hence, a conclusion part with a word count of 65 words provides a final appeal that marks the author’s opinion in the context of all the available knowledge. In the above essay, the writer’s concluding remark is that Americans must follow clinical recommendations about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Principles of Academic Writing

The above 250-word essay is a scholarly text for several reasons. Firstly, it adopts the outline of an academic paper, including an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. In lengthy essays, the body comprises several paragraphs with several headings and subheadings. Secondly, it has a thesis that helps to anchor the writer’s central message. Basically, the content of the body paragraph focuses on proving or strengthening the writer’s thesis. Thirdly, the author incorporates evidence in the paper, which appears in the body part. For instance, evidence helps to establish credibility, making the essay a scholarly text. In turn, the body paragraph starts with a topic sentence, which determines the direction of the entire section. As per the sandwich rule, the writer writes evidence to support the opening statement and then provides a statement that establishes the significance of evidence.

Comparison Between Organizing a One-Page Paper and Writing a 250-Word Essay

In academic writing, authors can choose to single-space or double-space their text. Basically, a one-page essay follows the single-spaced format, meaning the total word count should be more than 500 words. In this case, students can write different headings and subheadings in the body paragraphs to establish a logical flow to their arguments. For instance, in the MLA 8 format (Modern Language Association 8th Edition), authors may not put a title in the introductory and concluding parts. However, in the APA 7 referencing style (American Psychological Association 7th Edition) format, writers must put a title in these paragraphs. In a one-page paper in whatever format, students must put headings (and subheadings if necessary) to create a logical flow in their text. In short, the most significant characteristics of a one-page paper that distinguishes it from writing a 250-word college essay are single-spacing, including the word count.

Other Features

In a 250-word essay, the notable feature is double-spacing, which ensures the total word count on a page does not go beyond 250 words. Basically, this type of essay’s primary distinguishing feature is that it uses minimal headings. Sometimes, there are no subheadings in the body. In this case, the basis of the outline is the limited number of words, an aspect that demands writers to avoid unnecessary wording of the text. Another feature that sets apart a 250-word college essay from a one-page paper is the use of evidence to support the author’s central claim. As indicated, the need to avoid unnecessary wording in a 250-word essay puts a demand for writers to limit the number of sources they incorporate in their texts. In turn, one can argue that this limitation in the number of sources premises the need to satisfy the Sandwich Rule.

Based on these differences, someone may ask, “So what?” The answer to this question requires people to consider expectations before they start writing a 250-word essay. In many instances, people cannot call themselves writers who choose which format to use in writing texts because their instructors make this choice. However, if people have the freedom to choose, the above differences may influence the format they prefer. For example, students may choose to use the one-page paper format. Such work adopts a single-spacing format if they want to write their works on a single page. When it comes to choosing the format to use in writing a 250-word essay, the primary consideration that writers must make is word count. It would make no sense to write a 250-word essay in the single-space format.

How to Write a Good 250-Word Essay for Different Educational Levels

College or university papers.

In academic writing, the demand placed for writers of texts depends on their level of education. In particular, this aspect means that a university student has a higher threshold than a high schooler in academic writing to meet the criteria of writing a 250-word essay. For instance, this threshold entails several elements, including language sophistication and level of research, among others. On language sophistication, college students must demonstrate mastery of the English language, particularly regarding their subjects. In other words, when writing about nursing, university scholars must write nursing terminologies in their texts to establish an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. On the level of research, university students must include evidence in their writing to build credibility. Hence, the higher the number of sources that writers use, the more their works become an outcome of thorough research.

High School Essays

In contrast, academic writing puts no pressure on high schoolers to use sophisticated language and in-depth research. Basically, the expectation is that writers in this level of education can demonstrate a logical flow of their arguments. In other words, writers in this level of education should not focus on appearing sophisticated but rather conversant with their topics when writing a 250-word essay. As opposed to using in-depth research to anchor their texts, high schoolers should use practical examples. Here, high school writers use observable phenomena to anchor their arguments. In turn, the reason for expectations for a university student and those of a high schooler is different. It is because the former must demonstrate an in-depth understanding, and the latter must show critical thinking.

The Difference Betwen Academic Levels

The differences between a one-page essay and a 250-word essay have nothing to do with the academic level. For instance, a university student and a high schooler can write their arguments through a one-page paper or a 250-word essay. In this case, the only difference between the texts of these two students would be the sophistication of language and the level of research that they incorporate in their writings. For college students, the elements that would demonstrate a sophisticated language include theories, models, concepts, and principles around the subject matter. In turn, a one-page paper would provide a writer with enough space to explore these elements. Hence, it is impossible to organize many ideas in a 250-word college essay.

Summing Up on How to Write a Perfect 250-Word Essay

There are no questions that academic writing requires some level of professionalism to make a text credible. As indicated, several elements characterize an essay as a scholarly text, including an outline and evidence supporting the author’s central claim. To anyone interested in writing a 250-word essay, the following tips are essential:

  • Pick a topic.
  • Develop a central claim (thesis).
  • Identify the audience.
  • Identify keywords.
  • Choose a format (MLA, APA, Harvard, Chicago/Turabian, or any others).
  • Create an outline for a 250-word essay.
  • Research the topic to identify credible sources.
  • Write the introductory paragraph and ensure the concluding sentence captures the thesis.
  • Develop the body paragraphs and incorporate evidence.
  • Write the concluding paragraph and make sure not to introduce any new information. Writers should simply restate the thesis, summarize the main themes of the paper, and make a concluding remark.
  • The word count of the paper must be 250 words.

Points to Remember

  • The introductory paragraph in the 250-word essay must conclude with a thesis sentence.
  • The introductory paragraph must establish the context of the topic.
  • The body paragraph(s) must open with a topic sentence.
  • Incorporate evidence in the body paragraph(s).
  • Observe the Sandwich Rule.
  • The concluding paragraph must not introduce new information but summarize the entire 250-word essay.
  • Restate the thesis in the concluding paragraph and make a concluding remark.
  • The concluding remark should indicate the author’s independent thoughts about what they have written.
  • Ensure there are no grammatical errors by reading through the 250-word essay at least twice.
