I remember seeing a poster on my junior high classroom wall: “Communication is the Beginning of Understanding.” This spoke to me at the time. Yet, like so many people, I had never really thought much about communication. I would have described communication as sending and receiving messages.

Communication Is More Than Sending and Receiving Messages

In reality, communication is often about transmitting information. We send and receive messages with people in our lives. Daily, much of our communication consists of coordinating schedules, “What time are you getting home for dinner?” and negotiating whose turn it is to do the dishes, pay the bills, or take dinner to a friend who is ill. We send messages like, “It is your turn to let the dog out” and receive messages like, “Don’t forget to get dog food at the store” (if you have not guessed, a lot of the messages in my house are about the dog).

We might also blame problems on communication, talking about “communication breakdowns” or on a “lack of communication.” If we think about communication in these ways, we have missed so much that is important about communication. We have neglected how and why communication matters.

Communication Matters to Creating and Changing Relationships

What is important to understand is that relationships are talked into (and out of) being. In communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships. As we communicate, we become and change who we are. Think about how you have grown and changed as you communicate at home, at work, with friends, and in your community.

As we communicate, we co-create relationships and our own identity. As you think about your close relationships and your family, you can likely recall important events, both positive and negative, that impacted how you understand your relationship and yourself as a person.

Consider this example: one of my college students described a childhood family ritual of going out on the front lawn on Christmas Eve. The family sang Christmas carols and threw carrots on the roof for Santa’s reindeers. The family still does this annual carrot-throwing ritual in adulthood. You can picture them bringing their sometimes confused new partners and spouses out in the snow to throw carrots onto the roof and sing.

Why does this family still throw carrots and sing? Through this seemingly silly ritual, the family celebrates who they are as a family and the togetherness that is important to them. The family creates space for new people to join the family. Through their words and actions, members of the family teach their new partners how to be family members through carrot throwing and other vital experiences.

I am sure you can point to experiences that have been central to creating your relationships and your identity.

Communication Matters as We Face Change and Challenges

We also communicate to work our way through family changes and challenges. Family members or others may have different expectations of what our family and personal identity or should be. This is especially true when a family does not fit dominant cultural models, such as single-parent families, multi-ethnic families, stepfamilies, LGBTQ families, or adoptive families.

For me, becoming a stepfamily was highly challenging. We became a stepfamily when I was 12 years old. My mother had recently died, and my Dad surprised us, kids, introducing us to the woman he wanted to marry. We no longer matched the other families in the neighborhood where we’d lived most of our lives. We certainly did not feel like a family overnight.

It took my stepfamily several years to create an understanding of what it meant to be a family. As we interacted, and with many mistakes and some successes, we slowly came to understand what we needed and expected from each other to be a family.

For all of us, relationship and family identity is constantly developing and changing. In my case, I remember my stepmom reminding me to wear a jacket when going out in the evening, even into my 40s, and giving me advice about my health. Communication Matters . Whether we are negotiating whose turn it is to feed the dog, how to become a parent, how to interact with a difficult co-worker, or how to celebrate with a friend who won a major award, it is in communication that we learn what to do and say. This is what I will write about in this blog as I reflect on what I have learned as a professor and researcher of interpersonal and family communication. I invite you to go on this journey with me. I hope to give you insights into your communication.

Does Everything I Say or Write Have a Purpose?

There are many reasons that communication takes place. Some of our communication might be simply an attempt at being cordial and friendly. For instance, we might like to say hello to a friend down the hall, give a shout-out on Twitter to a family member living in another state, say “excuse me” to someone we’ve just bumped into, smile at a baby in a stroller going by, post a picture of our birthday party on Facebook, and stop to pet a new puppy in the park. Or maybe we just need some information, such as asking an instructor for guidelines for a project, telling a store owner what we are looking for, or going up to a stranger for directions to the nearest bus stop. As you can see, almost everything we do on a daily basis has something to do with communication. Additionally, we can communicate the same information to a wide range of people, and how this is received can vary greatly.

Another important purpose of communication is to forge relationships, whether these are of short or long duration or for particular purposes. What kind of relationships do you hope to develop when using various forms of communication? Are you looking for a partner for a project, or perhaps a date for the football game, or just want to nurture the relationships you have with friends already? The impact of flawed communication on relationships can be long-lasting, so it is important to be thoughtful when posting your thoughts and ideas.

Do I Expect a Response or a Result From My Communication?

There are times we are just sending out messages or information and not expecting a response, except perhaps a “like.” For instance, your friend posts a picture of her new dog on Instagram and you click on “like.” Other times we try to communicate an idea or ask a question and we do want a response, such as “What time is the exam on Friday?” This response is possibly from one person or many. There are instances when you need information, and you will either ask someone, do some web searching, or make a phone call to get the information that you need. Depending on what your need is, you must consider what form of communication will work best and get you the most satisfactory results. Your purpose for communicating is to get some kind of reply.

What Do I Bring to My Communication With Others?

You probably haven’t thought of this, but whether you actively communicate or not, you are still communicating. Your facial expressions, body language, what you are wearing, your hairstyle, body art, where you choose to sit or stand in a room, the people you associate with, eye contact or lack thereof, and any other mannerisms that you have are a form of communication. We all pick up signals from each other in these nonverbal ways. So even though you might be shy, or reserved, or not interested in any interaction at all, you are still communicating some information to others.

What is Communication?

The English word ‘communication’ is derived from the Latin communis, which means common sense. The word communication means sharing the same ideas. In other words, the transmission and interaction of facts, ideas, opinions, feelings or attitudes. Communication is the essence of management. The basic function of management (planning, planning, staffing, supervision and management) cannot be done effectively without effective communication.

Communication is a two-way process which involves transferring of information or messages from one person or group to another. This process goes on and includes a minimum of one sender and receiver to pass on the messages. These messages can either be any ideas, imagination, emotions, or thoughts.

Communication is a Latin word which means “to share”. There are different modes of communication available today. These include emails, chats, WhatsApp, skype (conference calls), etc. Effective communication makes people’s work easier and smooth.

Communication Process

Communication is an ongoing process that mainly involves three components namely. sender, message, and recipient. The components involved in the communication process are described below in detail:

The sender or contact generates the message and transmits it to the recipient. He is the source and the first contact

It is an idea, knowledge, opinion, truth, feeling, etc. produced by the sender and intended for reference.

The message produced by the sender is encrypted in a symbolic way such as words, pictures, touches, etc. before transfer.

This is how the coded message is conveyed. The message can be conveyed orally or in writing.

It is a process of modifying the signals sent by the sender. After recording the message is received by the recipient.

You are the last person in the chain and the message you sent was sent. If the recipient receives the message and understands it correctly and acts on the message, only then the purpose of the communication is achieved.

Once the recipient confirms to the sender that you received the message and understood it, the communication process is complete.

Refers to any restrictions caused by the sender, message or recipient during the communication process. For example, incorrect telephone connection, incorrect coding, incorrect recording, careless recipient, incorrect understanding of message due to discrimination or inappropriate touch, etc.

Types of Communication

Verbal Communication and Non-Communication

Verbal communication:

Communication occurs through verbal, verbal or written communication that conveys or conveys a message to others is called oral communication. Verbal communication is the use of language to convey information verbally or in sign language.Verbal communication is important because it works well. It can be helpful to support verbal Non-verbal communication Any non-verbal communication, spoken words, conversation and written language is called.

Non-verbal communication:

It occurs with signs, symbols, colors, touches, body or facial features. Insignificant communication is using body language, body language and facial expressions to convey information to others. It can be used both intentionally and deliberately. For example, you may have a smile on your face when you hear an idea or a piece of interesting or exciting information. Open communication is helpful when you are trying to understand the thoughts and feelings of others.

Mode Of Communication

Formal Communication:

Formal Communication refers to communication that takes place through legal channels in an organization. That kind of communication takes place between managers or employees of the same class or between high and low and vice versa. It may be oral or written but a complete record of that communication is kept in the organization.

Informal Communication:

Informal communication is defined as any communication that occurs outside of the official channels of communication. Informal communication is often referred to as the ‘vine’ as it spreads throughout the organization and on all sides regardless of the level of authority.

Few Communication Barriers

One sometimes wants to connect with one thing, but he is actually saying something else that he did not intend. This type of event in communication behaviour is known as the “Arc of Distortion”. The distortion may be the result of some error in any of the communication channels. These barriers to communication are also known as “barriers”.

Some of the barriers to communication:

Lack of proper style, feedback.

Content is not related to customer requirements.

Failure to maintain dual communication.

Bad weather.

Lack of horizontal flow of ideas.

Availability of technical coordinators.

Semantic Problems.

Lack of leadership.

Lack of enthusiasm.

Lack of support from heads of institutions.

Importance of Communication

Communication Foundation:

The manager explains to the employees the goals of the organization, the methods of their success and the interpersonal relationships between them. This provides communication between the various staff and departments. Therefore, communication serves as the basis for collaboration in the organization.

Functional:

The manager coordinates the individual and physical aspects of the organization in order to run it efficiently and effectively. This integration is not possible without proper communication.

The Basis for Making Decisions:

Good communication provides information to the manager that helps them make decisions. No decisions could have been made without knowledge. Thus, communication is the basis for making the right decisions.

Improves Management Ability:

The manager transfers targets and issues instructions and assigns tasks to subordinates. All of these factors are involved.

Communication plays a vital part in building up a strong relationship across the world, either in organisational structure or outside of it. It is an essential pillar for people in sharing the ideas, delegating responsibilities, management of a team, building up a healthy relationship, etc. Effective communication is necessary for managers in the organisation for planning, organising, leading and controlling. Managers of the organisation are dedicated enough in communicating throughout the day in various tasks performances. They spent the whole time communicating face-to-face or over the phone to their colleagues, subordinates and the clients. Managers also use written communication in the form of Emails, memos, daily reports and so on. Effective communication is a successful building block of the organisational structure.

It is a mode of information in the decision-making process.

Communication emphasises socialising within or outside the organisational structure.

It helps in controlling the process. Employees have to follow the organisation rule, code of conduct and other company policies.

There are four types of communication . It is categorised into verbal, non-verbal, written and visual.

Verbal communication is one of the modes where people communicate or transfer information through words. It is one of the common and usual types and frequently used during one on one presentations, video calls or conferences, meetings, phone calls etc.

There Are Certain Measures Which Enhance This More Effectively

Firm and Confident Voice:

Firm and confident communication reflects the personality of the person. It gives more certainty of completing any task. So always be confident so that your ideas are more precise and specific.

Active listening:

A good listener always tends to listen to everyone’s perspective or viewpoints. Active listening helps in identifying each one’s problem or thoughts in a more clear way.

Ignore Filler Words:

While giving a presentation, avoid using filler words such as yeah, like, so, etc. It might be distracting to your audiences. Try not to use them in official conferences or meetings.

Non-verbal communication is the use of body language. It includes body gestures, facial expression, and shaking hands, etc.. For example: How you sit during an interview automatically reflects your body language. If they are indicating closed body language like closed arms, bent shoulders, shaking legs, etc., they might be nervous, low in confidence, surrounded with anxiety, etc. Non-verbal communication is the most powerful communication to understand others’ thoughts and emotions.

Here are Certain Categories Where Non-Verbal Communication are Briefed Up

Positive Body Language: Always carry a positive body language where you can carry your confidence for performing any task. This type of communication gives support to your verbal talks and makes you more open to any kind of jobs.

Imitate non-verbal communication you find useful: Some facial expression or body language can be found helpful in an interview. If an interviewer has positively nodded his head, it gives a clear positive sign in a closed way, i.e. non-verbal communication.

It is the form of communication that involves writing, typing and printing symbols, letters, etc. It is used in Emails, chats, etc. which are the common techniques of using it in the workplace. Whereas it also furnishes a record of all docs in one place and keeps a systematic account of it.

Here Are Certain Categories Where Written Communication is Briefed Up

Aim for Simplicity:

Any type of written communications should be in a simple format and clear. It helps audiences to understand and provides more transparency on information which you're providing.

Reviewing:

Whenever you're writing, always review your emails, letters or memos before sending it. Reviewing helps to find the mistakes or opportunities to present something distinct.

Be Careful of Written Tone:

Since this is not a mode of verbal or non-verbal communication, always be cautious and have a polite tone while writing.

Keep the Written Files if You Find it Useful:

If you received the memo or email which you’re finding helpful or interesting, you could save that template for further references to use it in future writing for improving your written communication.

Visualizing is a form of communication where one can use photographs, drawing charts and graphs to convey information through it. It helps in furnishing the right information through graphics and visuals during office presentation (along with verbal and written).

Here are Certain Steps Which Help in Visual Communication Skills

Taking Advice Before Going with Visuals:

Visual communication includes presentation or emails. Always ask for other’s advice if any mistake can be rectified.

Targeting Audience:

Always put those visuals in presentation or emails that can be understood by everyone quickly. If you are giving a presentation on any data or chart which is not familiar to the audience, you need to explain it clearly. There shouldn’t be any usage of offensive visuals.

Barriers in Communication

There are certain barriers which create hindrance in building up communication over the time period.

Personal Barriers:

Communication takes place between receiver and sender. It’s a two-way process which should be clear. In case message formation went wrong, it gives a wrong and unclear message to the recipient. The receiver might get the wrong perspective while receiving a message. Therefore the message should be written effortlessly.

Systematic Barrier:

If any machine or electronic errors occur by any means or in any unforeseen situation, it may affect the importance of communication.

Flow of Communication

An organisation follows the five flow of communications:

Downward Flow:

In this, communication flows from the higher level to lower level, i.e. communication carried out by the head of the organisation to the subordinates like providing feedback, giving job instructions etc.

Upward Flow:

Communication which flows to the higher level of the organisation is upward communication. Subordinates use upward flow to transfer their grievances and performances to their seniors.

Lateral/Horizontal Communication:

It takes place where communication happens between the same level of the hierarchy that is communication between colleagues, managers or between any horizontally equivalent members of the organisation. It benefits employees to perform coordination among the tasks, time-saving, solving problems of employees of other departments or conflicts within the department.

Diagonal Communication:

Communication which takes place between the manager and employee of other work departments is known as diagonal communication.

External Communication:

Communication which takes place between the manager and external group likes vendors, suppliers, banks, financial institutions and many more. For example, the Managing Director would be meeting with the bank manager to get the bank loan or some other financial work.

The word communication has been derived from the Latin word ‘communis’ which means ‘common’ .

Thus, communication means sharing of ideas in common. “When we communicate,” says Wibur Schramn, “we are trying to establish a ‘commonness’ with someone. That is we are trying to share information, an idea or an attitude. The essence of communication is getting the receiver and the sender ‘turned’ together for a particular message.”

According to the shorter Oxford English Dictionary, communication means “the imparting, conveying or exchange of ideas, knowledge, etc., whether by speech, writing or signs.” Communication takes place when one person transfers information and understanding to another person. It refers to the exchange of ideas, feelings, emotions, knowledge and information between two or more persons.

There is a communication when you talk or listen to someone. For instance, a teacher while delivering his lecture communicates with his students. But if he speaks or writes in a language which is unintelligible to his students, there is no communication. When you read a book, its author communicates with you.

But communication does not mean merely written or oral messages. It includes everything that may be used to convey meanings from one person to another, e.g., movement of lips or the wink of an eye or the wave of hands may convey more meaning than even written or spoken words.

In fact, communication is the process of conveying message from one person to another so that they are understood. In business management, ideas, objectives, orders appeals, observations, instructions, suggestions etc. have to be exchanged among the managerial personnel and their subordinates operating at different levels of the organisation for the purpose of planning and executing the business policies.

The following standard definitions will further help to understand the meaning and concept of communication in management:

1. Louis A. Allen defines communication as, “Communication is the sum of all the things one person does when he wants to create understanding in the mind of another. It is a bridge of meaning. It involves a systematic and continuous process of telling, listening and understanding.”

2. Fred G. Meyer says, “Communication is the intercourse by word, letters or messages, intercourse of thoughts or opinions. It is the act of making one’s idea as and opinions known to others.”

3. In the words of Keith Davis, “Communication is the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another.”

4. The American Management Association defines communication as “any behaviour that results in an exchange of meaning.”

5. D.E. McFarland is of the opinion “Communication may be broadly defined as the process of meaningful interaction among human beings. More specifically, it is the process by which meanings are perceived and understandings are reached among human beings.”

6. Koontz and O’Donnell are of the opinion “Communication is a way that one organisation member shares meaning and understanding with another.”

7. Theo Haimann says, “Simply stated, communication means the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another. Communication, fundamental and vital to all managerial functions, is the process of imparting ideas and making oneself understood by others.”

8. Charles F. Refield: “Communication is the broad field of human interchange of facts and opinions and not the technologies of telephone, telegraph, radio and the like.”

9. C.G. Brown has defined communication as, “the transfer of information from one person to another, whether or not it elicits confidence. But the information transferred must be understandable to the receiver.”

10. Keith and Gubellini defines communication as, “In its everyday meaning, communication refers to the transmitting of information in the form of words, or signals or signs from a source to a receiver.”

11. M.W. Cummin: “The word communication describes the process of conveying message (fact, ideas, attitudes and opinions) from one person to another so that they are understood.”

12. In administrative context, the term communication has been defined by William Scott as, “a process which involves the transmission and accurate replication of ideas ensured by feedback for the purpose of eliciting actions which will accomplish organisational goals.”

13. National Society for Study of Communication. (A special committee on communication in business and industry) defined communication as “a mutual exchange of facts, thoughts, opinions or emotions. This requires presentation and reception, resulting in common understanding among all parts. This does not imply agreement.”

We can conclude from the above definitions that in business communication does not mean merely sending or receiving message. It is much more than that. It includes proper understanding of the message, its acceptance and action on it.

In the broadest sense, communication refers to the whole process of man’s life in relation to the group and includes exchange of information, a system of communicating, and a process by which meanings are exchanged among human beings.

Essay on the Nature of Communication:

From the analysis of above-mentioned definitions we get the following essential features of communication:

1. It Involves at Least Two Persons:

Communication involves at least two persons, a sender and a receiver. The sender is called communicator and the receiver of the message is known as communicate. A person who speaks, writes or issues some instructions is the sender or communicator and the person for whom the communication is meant or who receives the message is the receiver or communicates.

2. Message is a Must:

A message is the subject matter of communication, e.g., the contents of the letter or speech, order, instructions or the suggestions. A communication must convey some message. If there is no message there is no communication.

3. Communication May be Written, Oral or Gestural:

Communication is generally understood as spoken or written words. But in reality, it is more than that. It includes everything that may be used to convey meanings from one person to another, e.g., movement of lips, or the wink of an eye or the wave of hands may convey more meaning than even written or spoken words.

4. Communication is a Two Way Process:

It involves both information and understanding. Communication is not complete unless the receiver has understood the message properly and his reaction or response is known to the sender. Understanding is the end result of communication but it does not imply agreement.

5. Its Primary Purpose is to Motivate a Response:

The primary purpose of communication is to motivate response or influence human behaviour.

There is no doubt that motivation comes from within but communicator can also motivate people by good drafting of message, proper timing of communication, etc. To create understanding, communication should be relevant to the situation. It must always be remembered that communication is a means of motivating and not an end itself.

6. Communication May be Formal or Informal:

Formal communication follows the formal channels provided in the organisation structure.

For example, the Managing Director communicates with the departmental heads, say Finance Manager, finance manager communicates to deputy finance manager, the deputy finance manager with accounts officer and so on. In simple words, in informal communication, there is no direct communication between the Managing Director and the accounts clerks.

Informal communication flows from informal channels of communication which are not provided in the organisation structure. These channels develop among members because of personal contacts through working with each other.

7. It Flows Up and Down and Also From Side to Side:

Communication flows downward from a superior to subordinate and upward from subordinate to a superior. It also flows between two or more persons operating at the same level of authority.

8. It is An Integral Part of the Process of Exchange:

It refers to the exchange of ideas, feelings, emotions and knowledge and information’s between two or more persons.

In any organization, interpersonal communication forms a basic tool in the workplace. It assures proper coordination of activities and is based on the point of relating with others, which forms a major aspect of relationships, including both personal and business.

Employees are also expected to communicate with their bosses, and the communication can be either written or verbal. On the other hand, verbal communication may be vital in situations such as communication between the supervisor and employee in order to find out if the assigned work has been done properly, while written communication may become useful if the intended information to be passed out is in large amounts.

Interpersonal Communication: The Key Principles

There are four principles that try to explain the effective means of interpersonal communication. According to these ideas, interpersonal communication is irreversible, difficult, contextual, and unavoidable (Manawadu et al. 2022).

Like a chemical reaction, interpersonal communication does not offer a chance for reversal of what has been uttered. Whenever an individual utters certain words, the effect caused by these utterances will not be forgotten even when the speaker makes corrections.

Interpersonal communication is a complex affair because of the many dimensions required to ensure success. Since there are various ways to communicate, it becomes impossible to choose the proper way of communication.

Interpersonal communication strongly depends on the environment around which the conversation is taking place and the parties communicating. Some of the contexts that interpersonal communication relies on are psychological, situational, relational, environmental, and cultural contexts.

Last, interpersonal interaction is inescapable because people have to communicate, and thus, this fact can never be avoided. Communication does not entail only words but also the use of gestures, facial expressions, and posture. Therefore, this means that people are in constant communication with each other. The primary purpose of these principles is to ensure interpersonal communication becomes an effective means when dealing with a means of development or a given conflict.

However, there are misconceptions (conflicts) resulting from effective interpersonal communication. These misconceptions are brought about during the application of the aforesaid principles of interpersonal interaction. Normally, interpersonal communication is inescapable; therefore, it can result in confusion when they are interpreted in many ways.

To make matters worse, being irreversible means the misconceptions can never be modified in terms of an orderly deliverance of the topic. Misconceptions in effective interpersonal interaction can also be brought about by a lack of knowledge regarding the topic or context that is being discussed. Interpersonal communication can become complicated when there is diversity of languages and the individuals involved cannot understand each other.

Interpersonal Communication Barriers

Physical barriers are one of the main factors that inhibit communication. This may include closed doors of an office, screens that form a barrier, isolated areas for people with different statuses, a large working area for the employees that are isolated from other areas, or restricted areas where unwanted persons are not allowed. The most crucial component in providing coherence to the teams involved has been identified as proximity (Ruiller et al. 2019).

The second barrier to effective interpersonal communication is the perceptual barrier. This barrier involves the fact that people see the world at different levels depending on where they come from or how and where the individual person grew up. Therefore, the perceptual barrier is concerned with our thoughts, assumptions that a person makes, and also how a given individual perceives the information relayed to him/her.

The third barrier is the emotional barrier. Emotional barriers are all about mistrust, suspicion, and fear among the individuals at the workplace. Interpersonal interaction is hindered by emotional barriers because there is no open and free communication between the parties concerned at the workplace, leading to poor relationships.

The fourth barrier to effective interpersonal communication in the workplace is cultural barriers. This comes in when an individual joins a certain group at the workplace; he/she has to behave in the same particular way as the individuals that were already in that group.

Consequently, the individual will adopt the behavior pattern of the group in order to be rewarded through acts of inclusion, recognition, and approval. persons who conform better in a particular group will be afforded mutual interest, whereas persons who do not conform better in a given group will not be straightforward with other individuals, resulting in bad communication (Eisenberg, Post and DiTomaso, 2019).

The fifth barrier to effective interpersonal communication is the language barrier. Language that one needs to become more familiar with may present problems to oneself when attempting to express himself or herself. In today’s world, there are many languages that are used by people; therefore, it presents a problem in choosing the official language to be used in the workplace.

The sixth barrier to effective interpersonal communication is gender barriers. There are major differences in the speech pattern of a man compared to that of a woman. For example, it is estimated that a lady says around 22,000 to 25,000 words per day, whereas a male speaks between 7,000 to 10,000 words per day (Eisenberg, Post and DiTomaso, 2019). It has been found that females talk sooner than boys and use twice as much language as boys at the age of three years (Eisenberg, Post and DiTomaso, 2019).

The seventh barrier to effective communication is interpersonal barriers. This is a result of poor relationships among individuals at the workplace; hence, the parties that are on bad terms might resolve to abstain from meeting and talking to each other. There are six ways that an individual can use to distance himself from others, and they include pastimes, withdrawal, rituals, playing games (seek and hide), closeness, and working.

Last but not least, noise is a barrier to effective interpersonal communication. Noise usually interferes with a person’s concentration; therefore, it hinders proper understanding of the message relayed. For instance, people working in a noisy factory cannot use verbal communication and are compelled to use nonverbal modes of communication such as signals, gestures, and facial expressions.

However, there are other barriers that are recognized but are not as major as the ones discussed above, and they include intentional orientation, indiscrimination, allness, and polarization.

For almost a decade now, the concept has been experiencing increased attention and popularity within practice and research. In the studies, it is becoming clear that perception of the self plays an integral role in life. While there are several perceptions, none holds such importance as self-perception, and hence, much has to be done to ensure that every individual perceives the self in the highest esteem. It is this perception that we get an understanding of who we are and the role that we play as an element within the universe. Self-concept, therefore, is important in interpersonal relationships.

Self-concept is different from self-esteem and self-report. Self-esteem is described as a person’s sense of value and pleasure in oneself, whereas self-report is defined as what a person is ready and able to divulge (Eisenberg, Post and DiTomaso, 2019).

Self-concept is described as a person’s view of himself, and it impacts interpersonal communication at work through a variety of factors, including cultural teaching, social comparison, and a person’s own judgments and comparisons (Javornik et al. 2021).

Self-concept is mainly developed by the way an individual communicates with another. Through socialization at the workplace, an individual gets to know much about his personal attributes.

Self-concept involves scrutinizing one’s ability in terms of personality, one’s career, relevant interpersonal skills, physicality, and life ability. For example, a statement like “I am slow” is an assessment of oneself that leads to self-concept, and in contrast, a statement like “I am sleepy” will not be a self-concept since feeling sleepy is normal and is only a temporary state. An individual’s self-concept changes with time after identifying the possible crisis and then reassessing oneself.

It is worth noting that self-concept is based on the past, present, and future selves. Future selves sum up every self that one can become and what an individual thinks he can make himself given time. The possible futures are a general sum up of reflections defined by fears, what one believes are his threats, what ambitions and expectations he has, and the standards set for the individual.

Self-concept can be well cultivated in an individual during childhood period so that when an individual grows up, he becomes used to himself, and this removes fear and threat when socializing with others.

Interpersonal Relationship Conclusion

In conclusion, interpersonal communication is fundamental in building good relationships at the workplace, which in turn contributes to an increase in productivity. This will lead to better salaries for the workers. Hence, improved living standards and the welfare of the workers will be catered to in an appropriate manner.

Therefore, the principles of interpersonal communication are inevitable. As a result, proper methods should be designed in order to overcome the misconceptions that may result from interpersonal interactions. In addition, the parties involved in interpersonal communication should design ways to overcome the barriers that hinder effective interpersonal communication. If this is managed appropriately, then conflicts will be done away with, making the world a better place to live.

Interpersonal communication will also be enhanced through maintaining and developing self-concept; therefore, it becomes more important to encourage positive virtues that will instill self-concept in an individual. Consequently, vices should be avoided in order to encourage the building of self-concept.

Millions of research papers at risk of disappearing from the Internet

More than one-quarter of scholarly articles are not being properly archived and preserved, a study of more than seven million digital publications suggests. The findings, published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication on 24 January 1 , indicate that systems to preserve papers online have failed to keep pace with the growth of research output.

“Our entire epistemology of science and research relies on the chain of footnotes,” explains author Martin Eve, a researcher in literature, technology and publishing at Birkbeck, University of London. “If you can’t verify what someone else has said at some other point, you’re just trusting to blind faith for artefacts that you can no longer read yourself.”

Eve, who is also involved in research and development at digital-infrastructure organization Crossref, checked whether 7,438,037 works labelled with digital object identifiers (DOIs) are held in archives. DOIs — which consist of a string of numbers, letters and symbols — are unique fingerprints used to identify and link to specific publications, such as scholarly articles and official reports. Crossref is the largest DOI registration agency, allocating the identifiers to about 20,000 members, including publishers, museums and other institutions.

The sample of DOIs included in the study was made up of a random selection of up to 1,000 registered to each member organization. Twenty-eight per cent of these works — more than two million articles — did not appear in a major digital archive, despite having an active DOI. Only 58% of the DOIs referenced works that had been stored in at least one archive. The other 14% were excluded from the study because they were published too recently, were not journal articles or did not have an identifiable source.

Preservation challenge

Eve notes that the study has limitations: namely that it tracked only articles with DOIs, and that it did not search every digital repository for articles (he did not check whether items with a DOI were stored in institutional repositories, for example).

Nevertheless, preservation specialists have welcomed the analysis. “It’s been hard to know the real extent of the digital preservation challenge faced by e-journals,” says William Kilbride, managing director of the Digital Preservation Coalition, headquartered in York, UK. The coalition publishes a handbook detailing good preservation practice.

“Many people have the blind assumption that if you have a DOI, it’s there forever,” says Mikael Laakso, who studies scholarly publishing at the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki. “But that doesn’t mean that the link will always work.” In 2021, Laakso and his colleagues reported 2 that more than 170 open-access journals had disappeared from the Internet between 2000 and 2019.

Kate Wittenberg, managing director of the digital archiving service Portico in New York City, warns that small publishers are at higher risk of failing to preserve articles than are large ones. “It costs money to preserve content,” she says, adding that archiving involves infrastructure, technology and expertise that many smaller organizations do not have access to.

Eve’s study suggests some measures that could improve digital preservation, including stronger requirements at DOI registration agencies and better education and awareness of the issue among publishers and researchers.

“Everybody thinks of the immediate gains they might get from having a paper out somewhere, but we really should be thinking about the long-term sustainability of the research ecosystem,” Eve says. “After you’ve been dead for 100 years, are people going to be able to get access to the things you’ve worked on?”
