Low-Residency MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction

Harness your passion for storytelling with SNHU's Mountainview Low-Residency MFA in Fiction and Nonfiction. In this small, two-year creative writing program, students work one-on-one with our distinguished faculty remotely for most of the semester but convene for weeklong intensive residencies in June and January. At residencies, students critique each other's work face-to-face, meet with major authors, agents and editors and learn how to teach at the college level.

How Much Does a Master’s in Creative Writing from FAU Cost?

During the 2019-2020 academic year, part-time graduate students at FAU paid an average of $1,027 per credit hour if they came to the school from out-of-state. In-state students paid a discounted rate of $372 per credit hour. Information about average full-time graduate student tuition and fees is shown in the table below.

Does FAU Offer an Online MA in Creative Writing?

Male-to-female ratio.

Of the students who received their master’s degree in creative writing in 2019-2020, 62.5% of them were women. This is less than the nationwide number of 66.6%.

Racial-Ethnic Diversity

Around 25.0% of creative writing master’s degree recipients at FAU in 2019-2020 were awarded to racial-ethnic minorities*. This is about the same as the nationwide number of 24%.

*The racial-ethnic minorities count is calculated by taking the total number of students and subtracting white students, international students, and students whose race/ethnicity was unknown. This number is then divided by the total number of students at the school to obtain the racial-ethnic minorities percentage.

Florida Atlantic University at Boca Raton, a diverse community with all of the cultural advantages of a major metropolitan setting, is located three miles from the Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Students in the MFA program specialize in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, pursuing half of their coursework in creative writing workshops and half in literature and theory seminars.

The MFA is a 48 credit hour program. Students complete seven courses in writing workshops/special topics, six courses in literature/literary theory, and six credit hours of thesis. We also offer two interdiscliplinary graduate certificates, one in literary translation and one in environmental humanities. Students can also work on Swamp Ape Review, our literary magazine. Internships are available for course credit.

Each year in addition to the traditional workshops in fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, a number of special topics courses are available to students. Recent examples have included Translation, Writing Flash, Experimental Fiction, and Teaching Creative Writing. Thesis hours are conducted one-on-one with individual faculty.

Students in the MA and MFA programs specialize in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, pursuing half of their coursework in creative writing workshops and half in literature and theory seminars. Both programs require completion of a creative thesis and feature small, rigorous workshops and seminars. The MFA is a 48 credit hour program. Students complete seven courses in writing workshops/special topics, six courses in literature/literary theory, ENG 6009 Principles and Problems of Literary Study, and six credit hours of thesis. The MA is a 30 credit hour program, consisting of four courses in writing workshops/special topics and three courses in literature/literary theory, plus ENG 6009 Principles and Problems of Literary Study, as well as six credit hours of thesis. Interdiscliplinary coursework is also available, in such fields as screenwriting and playwriting, through the School of the Arts in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

Each year in addition to the traditional workshops in fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, a number of special topics courses are available to students. Recent examples have included The Poem in Practice, Writing The Short Story Sequence, Writing the First Novel, Teaching Creative Writing, and Writing Across Genres. The program offers full funding. The program offers a stipend plus tuition waiver (students are still responsible for other required student fees) to all accepted students. The program also awards the Lawrence Sanders Fellowship, the Griffin Award, and the Swann Awards for summer funding.

Our Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing provides the practicing writer the skills necessary to meet the professional standards and expectations of their chosen genre and is intended as the terminal degree for those intending to teach creative writing.

Housed at the Biscayne Bay Campus and set amidst the tropical beauty, social diversity and cultural dynamism of Miami, the program offers small seminars, intense mentoring, and a dedicated faculty who are highly successful and award-winning working writers including Lynne Barrett , Richard Blanco , Debra Dean ,  John Dufresne ,  Denise Duhamel ,  Campbell McGrath ,  Les Standiford  and  Julie Wade .

The deadline to apply for admission to the Fall 2024 semester (there are no Spring admissions) is Wednesday, January 10, 2024 .

Students are selected on the basis of demonstrated talent and the desire to join a hard-working, mutually supportive community of writers. Coursework includes workshops, literature offerings, and form and theory classes on Plot, Character, and Poetics. The program places great emphasis upon preparation and completion of a publishable book-length creative thesis. Graduates of the program have gone on to successful careers as authors , professors , teachers , editors , and arts administrators . Program graduates have have published more than 200 books (and counting), including several bestsellers, received prestigious literary awards and residencies, and had their work adapted into award-winning films.

UW Institute for Creative Writing Fellows present work with Wisconsin Book Festival

The Wisconsin Book Festival hosted the 2023-24 Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellows Wednesday evening, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin’s Institute for Creative Writing.

The Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellows are a group of writers who are provided resources and community while working on their first book of poetry and fiction, according to the UW Creative Writing website . Not only is UW’s environment intended to improve the fellows’ writing skills, but it also provides them opportunities to develop as instructors, the website says.

UW creative writing professor Amy Quan Barry introduced the presenters, touching on the institute’s history — beginning with its founding in 1986 — and how it has developed numerous authors of acclaim.

The 2023-24 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow Elijah Bean presented first, reading from several poems, many of which concern ideas of home and reflection on the past. Bean’s poems are linked to memories such as a cramped living room, lawnmowers, dogs and writing alongside someone close to death and aware of their own mortality.

Wisconsin Book Festival hosts graduating MFA students

Madison Public Library celebrates banned books

Book bans marginalize LGBTQ+ youth

Following Bean was 2023-24 Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow Gothataone Moeng, who read an excerpt from the middle of the first chapter of her upcoming novel. Moeng’s work centered deeply around the meaning of human conversation and explored themes such as why people are drawn to certain others, becoming less ignorant of the world and the idea of possessing a great gift.

The 2023-24 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow Sadia Hassan presented next, with works heavily focused on the utilization of art as advocacy, and how poems can be written to represent one’s beliefs. The poems Hassan read involved themes such as dreaming, speaking out amongst a crowd and how to best confront the self-obsession that so heavily impacts American society.

Next was Ada Zhang, the 2023-24 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow, who read from a larger project in progress. Zhang’s work, which revolved around the life of a Chinese congregation moving into Texas and its subsequent role as a safe haven for immigrants, concerned the themes of religion, familial history and matching one’s identity with their family.

Lastly, 2023-24 Hoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow in Poetry Mandy Moe Pwint Tu read from two poems and an excerpt from her novel’s prologue. All three concerned the international student experience, from feeling like an outsider to managing the familial struggle across oceans.

All five of the Creative Writing Fellows showcased their unique styles of writing that earned their positions and will continue to develop their work in Wisconsin and beyond.

Creative writing MFA graduates will read their work

Come celebrate the 2024 graduates of the MFA program in creative writing as they share selections from their literary works at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27 in the Ulrich Museum of Art.

A reception will be at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend the free event.
