Summarize your main points, reaffirm your commitment to excellence, and express your enthusiasm for joining the graduate program. End with a strong closing statement that leaves a lasting impression on the reader.

3. Final Thoughts:

Writing a personal statement is an opportunity to reflect on your journey, aspirations, and achievements. Approach it with genuine introspection and enthusiasm, aiming to create a compelling narrative that captures the attention of the admissions committee. Remember to proofread your personal statement thoroughly and seek feedback from trusted mentors or colleagues to ensure its quality. I find great satisfaction in helping enterprising students to become leaders in regional and global hospitality and tourism professions by helping them to get accepted to graduate school. I like to think of my service as dedicated to fostering exceptional student achievement.

Hospitality and Diversity

As someone with a PHD in Social Ethics, I feel very strongly that diversity is especially important in the area of Hospitality Administration. In this field in particular, it is important to prepare people with the expertise, commitment, and skills for management and operations positions in the expanding industry that provides food, accommodations, and travel and tourism services to people of all languages and from all ethnic groups. You have made a good choice in your decision to apply to graduate school in hospitality because a wide variety of jobs and career opportunities exist within the field. Such opportunities exist in restaurants, hotels and other lodging establishments, contract food services, hospital and school food service, clubs, fast food franchises, airlines, and travel agencies.

Cultural diversity has become a major issue in the hospitality industry of the United States, in particular, representing novel opportunities, benefits and challenges for an increasingly culturally diverse workforce. It is important, therefore, that we search together for practical recommendations that might help human resource managers in hospitality to successfully deal with cultural diversity issues. Cultural diversity training modules are called for so that human resource and hospitality company training programs might better facilitate students increasing their cultural diversity awareness and sensitivity, learning about cultural differences, and developing skills for managing cultural diversity issues.

My mission in the area of Hospitality Administration is to engage students in developing the foundational knowledge, demonstrated skills and professional attitudes required for success in careers in hospitality administration: hotel operation, food service management, and meeting and event management. I also very much appreciate the way in which diversity appreciation is such a natural fit with this area of graduate study.

Hospitality Administration is rapidly becoming a major area for us in helping applicants to graduate school. When drafting your statement, we emphasize your strengths, your ethnicity, language skills, and travel experience.

The Humanitarian Side of Hospitality

Catering, hotels – the hospitality industry provides people with comfort, nourishment and shelter. But what about converting that into a humanitarian career? How does that work, you might ask?

Every type of volunteer experience shows you are a motivated person who’s willing to work in the name of improving other people’s (or animals!) lives. People who need it. Working towards a solution that makes the world a better place. And employers love that. So if you’re looking for a placement that you improve your chances of getting employed or getting onto a master’s program, the world is your volunteering oyster!

But what is hospitality in humanitarian terms? Aid. And which are the best humanitarian aid organizations? The World Food Programme (WFP) is part of the U.N. system, and the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. They reach 90 million people, in 80 countries! To apply, start here: http://i-recruitment.wfp.org/olcv/

Okay, so then there’s the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE). It’s dedicated to fighting global poverty, and has supported almost 1000 poverty-fighting development and humanitarian aid projects! To search for a career, go right here: http://www.care.org/careers

Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger. In 2012, it provided 550,000 small farmers with tools and treated 42,000 malnourished children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now that’s some hospitality! Check ‘em out: https://careers.actionagainsthunger.org/

For something a little different, the Hospitality Club partners and works with NGOs to provide a platform where travelers and people interested in doing good work can meet and collaborate. Find out more at http://ngos.hospitalityclub.org/ .

Need a job right now? The organization CoRSU has a duty station in Uganda and an opening for a Catering Officer at the time of writing. You can apply for this job if you have a simple diploma in catering, and you’ll be in charge of the preparation of meals for children and people with disabilities, among other duties. See here for more details: http://www.uganda.hotkenyanjobs.com/catering-officer-hospitality-ngo-jobs-corsu/

When you have a master’s degree, you’re more attractive to employers, whether in your own country or overseas. Here are some interesting programs that will get you abroad doing good work ASAP.

With events management, you could go into the humanitarian events field. The M.Sc. in Event Management at the HTL International School of Hospitality, Tourism and Languages provides you with 1 year of intensive training, language classes and an internship at one of the universities partner companies. Courses include strategic management and operational management. This program costs 3200 EUR per year.

The Master of Hospitality Management & Tourism at the same institution also involves foreign language training and an internship program at a local company. This time, the courses involved include hospitality management, tourism management and customer service and communication skills. This 9-month course costs 3200 EUR per year. Learning another language is so valuable in the humanitarian field, as are management skills.

Hospitality Management Personal Statement example

The hospitality industry is one of the quickest developing ventures, whose incredible assortment makes it an intriguing zone of working. I have never considered the interest and the chances which this industry offers until the day I began to fill in as a traveler chief aide two years prior.

It was mid-year work that should occupy my extra energy and increment my financial plan. I realized I planned to like it since I am excited about gathering new individuals and visiting traveler objections, however, I didn’t speculate the amount it would influence me.

As an associate, I was needed to help the traveler director oblige the visitors and coordinate various types of diversion. This work gave me the freedom to get familiar with crafts by such individuals as an inn, club, and occasion administrators.

I was profoundly dazzled by their determination to fulfill each need of their clients. I have understood the obligation of their calling, yet I have likewise seen how fulfilled they are at the point at which their customers are cheerful. I won’t ever fail to remember the essence of the vacationer chief I worked with when the visitors said thanks to him for the ideal occasion. His face was radiating.

Regardless of the reality, I was just an associate. I felt fulfillment too seeing that the vacationers were content with our work. This sensation of delight and even satisfaction was the primary motivation behind why I chose to consider Hospitality the board. I’m attached to find out about every area of the Hospitality industry, wherein I see my future.

Each administrator needs authority abilities. I think I have acquired them by taking part in different exercises. I was one of the understudies picked to arrange a play for the 100th commemoration of my grade school.

The most troublesome assignment of the association of the play was to cause the youngsters to convey a propelled execution. Ultimately I figured out how to propel them not exclusively to be acceptable entertainers however to appreciate acting itself. It created a positive reaction.

The enthusiasm I have for unknown dialects guaranteed my fruitful investment in the English Language Festival of my school. In this manner, I have improved my hierarchical and introduction abilities. Being an individual from both Eco-club-Mathew and Interact club, the point of which is a noble cause, I have acquired a feeling of solidarity.

As an admirer of nature, the thing I like to do the most is to go climbing and on picnics. I discover the idea of England extremely alluring and I am anticipating going there and seeing its delights. Moving is my diversion as well. I have been moving an advanced artful dance for a very long time. This is my approach to unwind and stay in shape.

I’m a solid and positive individual, who appreciates difficulties and never surrenders. I fantasize about dealing with lodging, even a chain of inns. I understand how incredible my desire is and how hard I should attempt to accomplish them however I think it is generally imperative to have a wish and will.

At the point when one who has solid wishes is self-assured and self-spurred when he is patient and decides he can satisfy them. I realize that other than every one of these characteristics I should likewise have abilities to prevail in this industry in which there is such an opposition. Considering the neighborliness of the board I will get the essential abilities and information to be a prosperous cordiality chief.

In ten years I envision myself having a five-star inn on the French Riviera and the principal thing I ought to do to accomplish it is probably to take this course at your college.

What Is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement AKA admissions or application essay or statement of purpose is a type of essay or written statement a candidate presents to a college, university, or graduate school they are applying to, explaining why they want to attend that school, study a particular course, and why they would be a perfect fit for these things.

A personal statement for masters is an essay you submit specifically for your postgraduate application. Writing one presents the opportunity for you to promote yourself to a school and show the admissions teachers that you are the perfect candidate for a course.

Tips For Making Your Personal Statement For Masters Stand Out

Before we get into how you should write a statement of purpose for masters, we would first like to share with you certain tips to include in your essay to make it stand out from that of other applicants and be convincing enough to any admissions officer that reads it. The tips we have mentioned here, cover general things like starting and ending your personal statement, timing, length, and what to include and what not to include in the essay, etc.

1. Starting And Ending A Personal Statement

When starting a personal statement, you would want to right off the bat grab the reader’s attention. To do this, start the statement by writing about your degree of choice, next why you want to study it and then how you got interested in it.

The next 2 sentences after that should cover a summary of your background in the chosen field, and you conclude by saying what you plan to do once you acquire your graduate degree.

Also start with that the evaluators reading want to hear first, then every other information should come second. You will notice we’ve used in the sop examples for masters we will share with you later in this article.

2. Plan Ahead

A personal statement is not something you rush while writing, which means if you want to get something good before you application then you must start to decide things like the length and how long it should take to complete.

Let us throw more light on this…

For length, a personal statement should be brief ranging somewhere between 500 -700 words, although schools often detect how long it should be. So, this is dependent on the institution you are applying to.

In terms of what to say in a statement, you could include personal experiences like why you were driven to apply for the program, an experience you had with a scholar in your chosen discipline, a course you took that inspired you to pursue masters, or a key moment during your studies which further motivated you.

No matter what you decide to write, just keep in mind that you need to take your time to craft something good even if it means creating several drafts before the real thing and do not forget to proofread the statement for errors.

3. Research Your Program Of Study

Researching your program of study is one way to establish that you truly understand the discipline you’re getting into and prove to the admissions officer that you thoroughly thought about it before applying.

And because you want to put yourself forward as a serious candidate, one way to make you research easier is for you to visit the website of the department you are applying to. This page will contain information about faculty members, their specialisation, and publications.

From the intel, you gathered there you can now identify which professors match your interests and which ones you will benefit the most from learning under. After you’ve found this out, relate the same in a sentence or two in your statement of purpose for masters.

Example: “I would be honoured to study under the tutelage of Professor Nadia whose work I found resonated strongly with my beliefs and intended projects in this course”.

4. Avoid Clichés, Junks, And Many Details

When writing a statement of purpose for master degree try to avoid clichés, junks, and unnecessary details so that you don’t lose or bore your readers in between. Be as concise as possible, even if it’s your chance to express yourself.

A personal statement is an opportunity for the admissions committee to get information that tells the that you are suitable for the course. So, when you overpower your statement with too many words, stories, and useless details, you come off as someone who is just trying to meet the word count.

5. Include Your Personal History Only If It Adds To The Statement

Do not include your personal history in your statement of intent for masters if it is not relevant to your purpose of study. This means no need for you to tell that story about that time you helped someone treat a cut and immediately realised that you wanted to be a doctor or nurse or how you developed a taste for reading at a very young age.

We can guarantee you that the hundreds of other applications competing for the same spot you are felt the same way, so saying those things really doesn’t make you unique.

On the other hand, if you are going to add personal history to your statement, you can put in things like an internship you did and the experience you got from the job, a major research project you ran by yourself, publications you’ve read or published, conferences you’ve attended or presentations you’ve done. These experiences are more concrete and are directly related to your program of study. They also set you apart from other applicants.

6. Don't Use The Same Personal Statement For All Your Applications

One common mistake applicant make that you shouldn’t is using the same statement of purpose for master degree for all your applications. Using the same information repeatedly even if you are going to change the university names is risky and could land you in a big mistake on a day you forget to be thorough.

All programmes have their own unique set of questions they want to see answered and information they need in your personal statement.

And even if some of them like extracurricular activities, proposal for project, why you are applying to the school, your unique qualities, and research works you’re doing might appear the same, do not use one statement to respond to all of them.

Write a new unique personal statement every time you want to apply.

How To Write A Personal Statement for Masters

When writing a personal statement for masters there are several steps and ground rules you need to follow to ensure that it comes out good enough to impress the admissions team of a school, and ultimately convince them to give you a spot on your program of study.

If writing one is something you are currently struggling with and can’t seem to get down the process of it right no matter what, this section on how to write a personal statement for masters, discusses in detail everything you need to get help with yours.

There are 4 parts to consider when writing your personal statement and we have listed them below:

1. Planning A Personal Statement

A personal statement is a piece of writing showing your academic interests and is only for application purposes which means there is no room for any autobiographical information in it about your personal life. Be as to-the-point as possible when writing it and stick to telling the school why you are the right person for the course, plus any other extra information detailing your achievements.

Before You Start:

Allot plenty of time to write your msc personal statement so that you don’t rush it. Remember, this simple piece of writing is your one shot at convincing a school that you are the best applicant they’ve seen and as such can either make or break your application.

Read the information expected of you from the university, rules and guidelines given, selection criteria and understand what they mean. Also research the institution.

Do a thorough research on the course you are applying for; this will help you explain better why you want to study it. The tutors interviewing you can tell when you are lying and presenting yourself as uninformed can cost you the admission.

Ensure that you don’t use the same personal statement for all your applications.

When Writing:

When writing the statement there are some questions to ask yourself that can help you plan it better. Those questions are:

  • Why you want to study a master’s and how does it benefit you in future?
  • How does the course you have chosen fit into your pre-existing skill set?
  • How do you stand out from the crowd as an applicant - e.g., work experiences you’ve had in the same field you are applying for?
  • What do you aspire to do or be as a future career and how will the course help you achieve that?
  • How can your work or skillsets contribute positively to the department/ university you are applying to, or society at large?

On the other hand, if you are applying for the masters to change from the field you studied in your undergraduate to another field, you should tell the school why you decided to take a different path in your studies.

Questions to ask yourself for this include:

  • Your reason for deciding to change your discipline.
  • How your undergraduate degree will be material for bringing fresh insights into your masters course.
  • How changing your study path will help you attain your future career.

2. Structuring A Personal Statement

Having good structure for your personal statement for master degree is important because it ensures that everything from the beginning, middle, and ending of the statement is written and equally falls in place perfectly.

We’ve left some tips for you below to help you:

Start your personal statement with an attention-grabbing introduction that is not dramatic or cliché. That means you should not begin with any of these over-used phrases we’ve listed out below:

For as long as I remember…

Since my childhood…

I want to apply to this course because I’ve always felt a strong connection to it…

All my life, I have always loved…

My interest in (course) always ran deeper than…

I’ve always been zealous about…

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in…

My past educational experiences have always…

You would want to be as snappy as possible with your opening because the admission officer has over a hundred applications to read and can’t waste all their time on yours. This means you should avoid overpowering it with unnecessary facts, quotes, and stories from your life.

The middle part of your ma personal statement is where the main content of the write-up should be. This is where you show your dedication to the course you’ve chosen, what motivated you to choose it, and why you are the right candidate for it.

When writing the middle part of a graduate personal statement, you should:

  • Give concrete reasons why you want to study a course at the University. The reason could be because of how the course is aligned to your future career or the University’s reputation in teaching that program.
  • Mention relevant things like projects, dissertations, or essays you’ve done, and any work experience you have.
  • Show proof of your core skills like and how they can contribute to the department.
  • Prove what makes you a unique candidate.
  • Discuss who your main influences for wanting to study the course are and why.
  • Add experiences like memberships to clubs that are related to your field, papers you’ve written before, awards, scholarships, or prizes.
  • Draw focus to how the course links to your past and future.
  • Mention your academic and non-academic skills and how they fit the course.

For Formatting:

  • Keep the statement length between 250 -500 words or as directed by the school.
  • Sentences should be no more than 25-30 words.
  • Use headings to break up the content – Why this university? Why this subject? Etc.
  • Make claims and provide evidence to back each of them up. This can be done by discussing your work experience and academic interests.

Language and tone to use:

  • The tone for your masters application personal statement should be positive and enthusiastic, to show you eagerness to learn and so that you convince the evaluators that you have what it takes to succeed.
  • Use exciting and refreshing language, and an engaging opening line.

How to Draft a Hospitality Management Statement of Purpose?

The first step to writing your statement of purpose sample for hospitality management is brainstorming, free-writing, and collecting your thoughts. Your SOP  should be a dive into relevant life experiences, academic and professional background (if applicable), career goals, co-curricular activities, volunteering/community involvement, and more.

So, refer to the effective guidelines below to draft a stellar hospitality management statement of purpose for hospitality management programs.

Introduction

What motivated you to choose hospitality management as your interest? What is the strongest experience that led you to choose this field? For example, during your visit to Pune, you stayed at a hotel where your cousin worked as a manager. You might have been awestruck by how she managed all the departments and employees efficiently. This triggered you to delve deeper into the tenets of the management business.

  • Begin your introduction with a striking experience that explains your journey into the field.
  • Alternatively, you can also begin with a research problem statement that you consider exploring in your future Masters/MSc/MBA/PhD program.
  • This is because some programs directly seek an SOP that is more of a research proposal than it is otherwise.

Second Paragraph

Building on the inception of your interest in hospitality management, you need to discuss relevant academic and life experiences that have augmented this interest. How has each of these experiences pivoted your thoughts, streamlined it, or transformed it?

  • Here, you can discuss relevant undergraduate experiences or courses in which you developed a particular interest.
  • For example, you must have developed an interest in management and administration from your undergrad courses.
  • Refer to a few course specifics and how these led you to develop your portfolio and inspired you to work on projects relevant to these interests.
  • Mention any interesting projects that you worked on or relevant co-curricular experiences worth sharing. Make sure that your experiences are at par with your interest in the Hospitality Management program you’re applying for.

We help you articulate your story powerfully and authentically, customized for your dream programs. Sign up now to ace every SOP!

Third Paragraph

Have you faced any setbacks in your academics? If you just made the cut or have lesser scores, you can mention that here.

  • Have you faced any other unique challenges or setbacks that have redefined your perspectives or interests?
  • How did you overcome these challenges and what is/are the positive outcomes of these experiences?
  • It’s essential to reflect on the lessons from these experiences to underscore your resilience.

Fourth Paragraph

You can discuss extracurriculars in this paragraph. Remember that Universities are interested to know more than just academics. So, go ahead and speak about your hobbies, social work, volunteering, etc, here. You can also discuss workshops or certifications which you have taken to upgrade your skills.

Fifth Paragraph

If you have work experience, add it here. However, if you do not have work experience, you can also discuss your internship experiences, reflecting on your specific learnings and take-aways. Identify a knowledge gap or the need for you to go for a Master/MSc/MBA/PhD in hospitality management.

  • How has the work experience/s influenced your career goals? Why do you wish to go for a Masters/MSc/MBA/PhD in Hospitality Management now?
  • Define your short-term and long-term goals.
  • How will the Master/MSc/MBA/PhD program from a specific hospitality management school help you achieve these goals?
  • How does the program align with your areas of interest?

Your conclusion in a hospitality management statement of purpose needs to be as engaging as your introduction.

  • What capabilities equip you to contribute to the University?
  • How can you be an asset to the University?
  • What activities, clubs, sports, student associations, groups, etc, piqued your interest?
  • What diverse experiences do you bring to your future graduate community?

Personal statement, overview .

There are two types of statements included in the Graduate School’s online application, (1) the Academic Statement of Purpose and (2) the Personal Statement, both of which are required for all graduate degree programs.

What Should the Personal Statement Include?

Your Personal Statement should provide the admissions committee with a sense of you as a whole person, and you should use it to describe how your personal background and experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Additionally, it should provide insights into your potential to contribute to Cornell University’s core value to provide a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect where scholars representing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn and work productively and positively together. Within your Personal Statement, you may also share details on lessons learned from any of your lived experiences including but not limited to

  • being a first-generation college student or graduate (no parent/guardian completed a baccalaureate degree)
  • racial, ethnic, and/or cultural background(s)
  • managing a disability or chronic health condition
  • experiencing housing, food, economic, and/or other forms of significant insecurity
  • being a solo parent
  • gender identity and/or sexual orientation
  • having served in the military
  • holding DACA, refugee, TPS, or asylee status

Your Personal Statement provides you with an opportunity to share experiences that provide insights on how your personal, academic, and/or professional experiences demonstrate your ability to be both persistent and resilient, especially when navigating challenging circumstances. It also gives you an opportunity to provide examples of how you engage with others and have facilitated and/or participated in productive collaborative endeavors. Additionally, it is a place, where if necessary, you can (and should) address any blemishes, gaps, or weaknesses in your academic record. In these situations, you will want to be honest, but brief. It is best to turn negatives into positives by focusing on how you overcame obstacles, remained persistent in the pursuit of your goals, and showed resilience. Share what you learned from the particular experience, and how it led you to become a better researcher/scholar/person, etc.

Content in the Personal Statement should complement rather than duplicate the content contained within the Academic Statement of Purpose, which should focus explicitly on your academic interests, previous research and/or relevant professional experience, and intended area of academic focus during your graduate studies.

Gender equality and women empowerment are things that I consider to be of great importance, especially since there’s still a gender gap even in the 21st century. I greatly admire my mother who is very supportive of me, and my many experiences in volunteer work and other group participations have shown me that women are capable of making important contributions in our society. As such, I would like to be instrumental in some way in the elimination of this gender gap.

Hospitality Management Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

My decision to follow a career in hospitality management has been prompted by work experience that I undertook during the last two summer holidays. I was initially undecided about my career choices and took the job, as an assistant to an entertainment manager on a cruise ship, to earn some extra cash.

I realised how lucky I was to have such an opportunity and to sail around the Mediterranean for 6 weeks, getting paid but I did not expect to enjoy it so much. The work was hard but the difference between this and the 9-5 Saturday job I have also done in retail could not be more marked. I was outside for much of the day, able to enjoy the sunshine and my work was all done with the intention of giving the people on the cruise their holiday of a lifetime.

Although some of the tasks were quite menial, being able to help put on competitions, run the children’s club and participate in the evening events was fantastic. Playing with the children and mixing with the guests at the dinner dances could not be described as work! I worked closely with the manager and was impressed at his ability to work long hours but still remain cheerful with his staff and the guests at all times. This rubbed off on me and I was surprised at how being enthusiastic and helpful was very satisfying, particularly when people made it obvious that they appreciated what I was doing.

After my first summer on the ship, I was eager to sign up for another and was pleased that they wanted me back. When I got home I started my college course doing A-levels in English, French and Business Studies and started to research university courses that would enable me to pursue a career in hospitality management. Working towards this well-defined goal has motivated me in my studies and I have obtained B grades in all three subjects in my AS levels. My immediate aim is to push at least two of these grades up to n ‘A’  in my A2 exams.

The subjects I chose to study were chosen based on my interest and aptitude and all are highly relevant to a degree in hospitality management. I have become much more fluent and confident in French as my work experience brought me into contact with French guests on the ship who were happy to let me practise. I realise the value of languages in the industry and have started an evening class to learn Spanish. Improving my cooking and presentation skills is also very important and I have combined this with helping my mother to run a cooking and baking skills class for teenage mothers in my local area. Next summer I have lined up an 8-week work placement with another cruise ship and this time I will be a catering assistant, so that will be a big challenge.

I feel that I have the motivation, academic and practical skills to gain a good degree in hospitality management and to then take up a career in the industry. My ambition is to own a hotel one day, or perhaps run my own cruises with a fleet of cruise ships.

Personal statement - msc international management share.

  • 12 May, 2013

I am keen to pursue MSc International Management at University of Brighton. By researching the course curriculum available at university website, I become to know that this course helps students to develop the global business knowledge which will help me to achieve my future career goal. Moreover, I believe getting a chance to pursue my study career in thisUniversity will progress me both professionally and intellectually. Besides the opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice will benefit me to enhance my skills and to achieve a deeper understanding of the field of InternationalManagement.

According to my research I have found that this course will be the perfect opportunity for me to continue to hone my communication and management skills, empowering me to be a more powerful and confident leader. Through hands-on exercises and projects designed to closely mimic those that I will encounter in my future career, this program will provide me with the accurate training and preparations I need to handle such tough challenges in the future. I believe this MSc will provide me with the knowledge of business concepts as well as the understanding of the matters that I will need to become a successful business professional. Intuition alone is not good enough to run a business. I believe that a strong business education is very crucial to successful business management in this Modern age, for this reason I hope to be able to acquire an MSc International Management. Moreover, my previous academic qualifications will give me an upper hand to obtain better score in this course. If I can successfully complete the course, it will create a platform for me to explore different career opportunities such as Policy advisor or analyst, Management analyst, public relations (PR) account executive and Compliance officer. For this reason, this MSc International Management will be the right choice for my future career progression.

Following my SSC and HSC I studied Bachelor of Business Studies from National University, Gazipur, Bangladesh in May 2012. Then I studied Master of Business Administration in HRM from Southeast University, Dhaka, Bangladesh in September 2014. Later on, I started my working career as a HR officer at Nassa Group in December 2014. I am still working with this company, and it was really a fascinating experience for me to work with them. My work experiences have led me to identify all my potentials including my strengths and weaknesses. I have also come to understand the need to be well equipped with the knowledge in the field of business. For this reason, I have decided to continue my further study with this course at University of Brighton. As I have gained a lot of experiences it will be easier for me secure a suitable position in if I have this degree.

University of Brighton offers International Leadership and Management, International Logistics and Finance, Sustainable Strategic Management, Managing Organisational Behaviour, Marketing in an International Context, Research Methods for master’s degrees and Management Integration OR Work Experience. Moreover, I will also have an opportunity to study some of the optional modules which include Entrepreneurship and New Venture Planning, Consultancy or Business Solutions in Action. All the modules are highly demanding and suitable in today’s business world.

I am determined to continue my study in this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we get to study with only the national students. Furthermore, the political chaos makes it harder for students to get the degree without any delay. On the other hand, the UK has a great multicultural and diversified student community which is an opportunity for me to learn with lot of students from different nationalities. UK education brand is highly respected by employers in our country as UK degree prepare graduates with academic competencies, developed personal and professional skills that are imperative for organizational success. The transferrable skills graduates carry forward from UK are pivotal for transforming organisational growth and gain competitive advantages. This is also a reason to study again in UK. In a recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by iGraduate shows that 82% international graduates say that their UK degree are worth the financial investment and similar number of graduates say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. Nearly 83% feel that UK degree has helped them to get jobs. These aspects have driven my ambition to gain the degree from a UK institution.

The University of Brighton is a public university dependent on four campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne on the south shoreline of England. Brighton University is known all through the world as a result of its great courses and dedication to instruction quality and execution. It has a boundless number of excellent mentors where I can arrive at the equivalent precise top-quality training. Moreover, The University of Brighton is ranked as a top 5 university for world-leading research impact in business and management studies (REF 2014). I can discover my desired course I need in this University. University of Brighton is one of the first UK universities which use Job Teaser, a new online placements system presenting placement options in the UK and Europe, which gathers together all the job opportunities, events and resources I will need to help me with my professional development. Also, I found one more unique feature which is Bee purple event that run throughout the academic year which that will improve my employability and help me grow a successful business. I will look no further if I get this opportunity to study at University of Brighton.

how to write a personal statement

Getting started.

The personal statement is your chance to show universities why you would make a great student on your course. It helps us get to know you and is an important factor in the application process. To help you get started, we’ve put together a guide below.

There are certain steps to follow in order to make sure you are ticking all the boxes when you write your personal statement. In this guide, we've broken it down into manageable sections so you can feel more confident before hitting ‘send’ on your UCAS application.

Our guide to writing your personal statement

The first thing to figure out is what the purpose of a personal statement is…

Your personal statement is your chance to show universities what you’re all about! You may be under the impression that getting into university is just about getting good grades, but that is only one element of why a university might make you an offer. Universities want people who have something about them, so they are also looking at your personality, what your interests are, what motivates you and your personal statement is your opportunity to tell them all about this.

Before you start writing…

The most important thing to do before you write your personal statement is to plan. Make sure that you carefully think about the different sections you want to include, the type of message you are trying to get across and the most important points you want to include. Once you have the framework, it's just a case of following your plan and ensuring that you use your own personal tone and writing style to show your personality.

Some helpful personal statement examples

Take a look at the examples below showing you how to complete the different sections of a personal statement. It’s important to note that these are just examples, here to inspire your own personal statement and should not be copied. Universities take plagiarism extremely seriously and there are advanced systems that can detect any form of copy and paste (even if you just change a few words). You don’t need to copy anyway, you’ve got this!

Writing your introduction

Your introduction should be a collection of short sentences and the aim is to catch the reader’s attention. Don’t waste time with lots of detailed long sentences where there is a chance your point could get lost.

  • Tell the reader why you are excited about the course
  • Tell the reader what your motivations are

The introduction is all about showcasing your enthusiasm so make sure that you explain why you are saying something. Don’t just say “I find politics really fascinating”. Tell them why you find it fascinating, what specifically interests you about it.

Below is an example of how to start a personal statement.

I have always been interested in helping people and sharing my knowledge to try and solve other people’s problems. Growing up as the eldest within a large family with lots of responsibilities, I have learnt to be kind, caring and to be a great listener. I understand that there are many issues affecting young people and I want to develop this knowledge by studying Childhood Studies at university. I have always wanted to work for a children’s charity to help give children from lower economic backgrounds the motivation to develop their skills to want to continue doing well at school. I believe that this degree will provide me with the experience and knowledge to do this and make a difference within the community. Childhood studies {"creator":{"jobTitle":"","name":"Childhood studies","@context":"http://schema.org","@type":"Person"},"text":"I have always been interested in helping people and sharing my knowledge to try and solve other people’s problems. Writing about your subject

This section is a key part of your personal statement. It is your opportunity to show the university why you have a passion for the subject you are applying for. Think about the following:

  • Why do you like your chosen subject?
  • Why are you suitable for this course?
  • How do your previous or current studies relate to your chosen course?
  • What activities do you do that are related to your chosen subject? For example, if you are applying for a sports course and you are part of a sports team, how does what you have learnt from the team give you additional skills for this course?
  • Research the modules and course information and pick out sections that you can specifically talk about
  • Show evidence that you understand the key factors of the course you are applying for

Below is an example of writing about your subject in a personal statement.

Storytelling is such an important part of everyday life. One element within English literature which I find the most fascinating is symbolism. I read a lot in my spare time and find it is a great way to relax and unwind. I love analysing the texts and working out how the green light in The Great Gatsby represents his dream and hope or how the blood in Shakespeare’s Macbeth represents Duncan’s murder and the guilt Macbeth feels about this. I am looking forward to developing this analytical skill further and learning about a variety of texts from different genres, outside of my initial circle of literature. I also write and perform my own poetry at open mic nights and have been particularly inspired by Sylvia Plath. Not only is literature a key part of my personal life but I also have experience studying and writing texts from my time studying English Literature for my A levels. This combination of passion, personal and academic experience is a great foundation to the study of English Literature at university. English Literature {"creator":{"jobTitle":"","name":"English Literature","@context":"http://schema.org","@type":"Person"},"text":"Storytelling is such an important part of everyday life. Writing about your hobbies and work experience

When you mention any social activity or interest, try and think about how they showcase an element of your personality or how they reflect a skill relevant to the course. This section will tell a university about your character and the type of person you are.

You can also discuss any work experience relevant to the course or any volunteering projects you have participated in.  Where possible refer each point back to what you have learnt and how it could be relevant to the course.

Below is an example of writing about your hobbies and work experience in a personal statement.

Outside of my studies, I am a very confident rugby player. Rugby has always been a love of mine and is a sport that I have really worked hard to perfect. I not only compete on a regular basis, but I also now teach children on a Saturday at the local club. Playing rugby has taught me many skills including teamwork, mental and physical strength, commitment as well as the ability to motivate people. Working with children has also taught me a new skill set including patience, the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences as well as problem solving. I know that these skills will be useful and can be developed on further whilst studying Sports Coaching at university and in my future career. {"creator":{"jobTitle":"","name":"","@context":"http://schema.org","@type":"Person"},"text":"Outside of my studies, I am a very confident rugby player. Writing your conclusion

This is your chance to leave a lasting impression. Write something that will stand out, that the university will remember you by. This would usually be in the form of wrapping together all points made so far and adding a final unique spin. You may use this opportunity to reflect on your past and how that has led you to the decision to study at this university or specific course.

You could also talk about your future aspirations, how you think this course will help you achieve these or maybe you want to reflect on your chosen industry at the moment and think about how your ideas would help develop or change this for the better. Whatever you choose to end with, ensure that you keep it concise and powerful.

Below is an example of writing your conclusion in a personal statement.

"The fashion world is always adapting but one thing that isn’t changing is the way that fashion impacts on our planet. Global warming is real and it is happening. The fashion industry plays a major role in this with big companies promoting quick fashion trends and excessive use of plastic packaging. Although more and more people are becoming aware of these issues, there are still not enough options for people to buy into sustainable fashion. By studying Fashion at university and gaining a full understanding of the industry, I want to be able to make a change. One of the main issues with sustainable clothing is the limitations it provides and so my future goals is to create a popular clothing company which provides up to date designs and current trends, that is easily accessible but is sustainable and good for our planet." Before you submit your application…

Once you have finished, leave it for a day before proofing and editing so that you are approaching it with a fresh pair of eyes.

  • Spell check and grammar check - it may sound simple, but it’s extremely important and showcases a professional approach
  • Make sure that you have highlighted your strengths throughout
  • Ensure that everything you have said has a reason for mentioning it. Anything that seems “random” or “empty rambling” should be removed
  • Ensure that you have referred to the correct course that you are applying for
  • Make sure your personality shines through
  • Ask other people like a friend, parent or teacher to read it, to give advice and another perspective

Finally, make sure that you are happy with it! This is your application and your chance to showcase yourself to the best of your ability. Give it your best shot!

Your personal statement dos and don'ts checklist
  • Be positive. Enthusiasm for your course goes a long way and could help land you a place on it
  • Ask friends and family for feedback. Don’t be worried if they point out a few flaws. It’s all part of the process and will help ensure your statement is as good as it can be
  • Proof it before you send it (your friends, family or a teacher could also help with this too) – grammatical and spelling mistakes could ruin a great effort. Avoid repetition and be careful of using American spellings and text speak
  • Know your strengths and use them to stand out. You want to reflect on what you have learnt so far (both in education and in your personal life) and explain why it will help you on the course. Personal interests, hobbies and life experiences are always a plus and make your statement original
  • Tailor it to the course you are applying to. Research the skills required for the course and show you have them and know how to apply these
  • Explain what you will gain from the course and what the course will gain from you
  • Stick to the character and line limit – you have 4,000 characters and 47 lines. To help with this, be clear and concise – big words and long sentences do not usually work. Instead, ensure that you have a clear, easy-to-read structure
  • Talk about the career path you would like to take and why you think the course will help you achieve it
  • Avoid generic statements and clichés, such as “I’ve always wanted to…” or “For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a…”
  • Keep a copy for future reference. Some courses have interviews and you may be asked to talk more about something you have mentioned
  • All personal statements are checked for similarity – don’t copy or share yours as plagiarism could affect the outcome of your application. Be original
  • Rely on a spellchecker – it is not as reliable as proofing your statement yourself
  • Try to include all your qualities. Instead focus on the ones you are most proud of
  • Procrastinate or leave it to the last minute – your statement could end up missing valuable information and you want to leave enough time for proofing
  • Talk about hobbies that are too general or irrelevant to your course – they will not make you stand out
  • Just list your achievements – focus on the skills you’ve learned from any achievements and why they will help you on the course
  • Treat it as a list of skills and interests – without context and reasoning they will lose their value
  • Exaggerate or make things up – it is much easier to get caught out than you might think
  • Repeat yourself. You’ve only got 4,000 characters, so don’t waste any saying something you’ve already covered
  • Be shy. This is your opportunity to showcase why you

This field combines my passion for providing excellent service with the excitement of an industry that is constantly evolving, driven by innovation and shaped by cultural trends.

What truly thrills me about hospitality management is the opportunity to create memorable experiences for people. Whether it’s through culinary experiences that tantalize the senses or personalized guest services that make people feel valued and cared for, the hotel industry provides an outlet for creativity, innovation, and service.

My background in business studies has equipped me with essential skills such as strategic planning, financial management, and marketing, all of which I believe are foundational to effective hospitality management. In addition, I have chosen elective courses in psychology, which have provided deeper insights into understanding individuals and cultures, facilitating better guest relationship management.

To augment my academic pursuits, I have seized on opportunities to gain practical experience in hospitality. Last year, I interned at a boutique hotel in the city, where I rotated between different departments – from front office and food and beverage to events management. This gave me a firsthand understanding of hotel operations, the coordination involved in providing seamless service, and the crucial role each department plays, on its own and collectively, in delivering exceptional guest experiences.

A significant life experience that has shaped my perspective of hospitality management was a year spent studying abroad. This exposed me to a myriad of cultures and practices and awakened me to the importance of cultural sensitivity in hospitality. Navigating new environments and connecting with people of diverse backgrounds provided me with valuable insights that I believe are transferrable to the multicultural and diverse operation of the hospitality industry.

On a personal level, I am proud of my ability to blend creativity and analytical thinking. For instance, during my internship , I proposed and implemented a successful initiative to enhance guest engagement by incorporating local cultural elements into daily hotel activities. The success and guest appreciation for this project bolstered my confidence in my potential as a future hospitality manager.

In terms of my suitability for this program, my excellent communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work in teams, and adaptability are but some of the skills that I feel make me an excellent candidate for this course.

Looking to the future, I aim to embark on a managerial career in the hotel industry with a focus on boutique and luxury properties. I dream of influencing hospitality trends and driving innovation in guest experiences. In an era where experiential travel is gaining momentum, I am excited at the prospect of blending local cultural experiences with luxury hospitality services.

Choosing to pursue a BA (Hons) in Hospitality Management is, for me, a choice to follow a passion and a dream. A dream to be part of an industry that combines continuous learning, innovation, and customer service. With this degree, I am confident that I will have the skills, knowledge, and network to thrive in, contribute to, and influence the hospitality industry. I am eager for the opportunity to immerse myself in my studies, broaden my horizons, and prepare for an exciting journey in hospitality management.

International hospitality and tourism management personal statement example.

My interest in the inner workings of the tourism industry began when my father introduced me to the process of organizing our family holiday at a very young age. As a result of this, I completed an internship at a local musical agency where I got the first glance at different organizational tasks around hotel bookings as well as marketing.

I have become particularly interested in combining creativity with management and organization. I searched for ways in which I could introduce myself to the industry and first chose the course of International Business & Economic Studies at my current institution. Especially interesting to me were the concepts of multinational companies, financing and investment but also strategic planning. I am eager to learn about the intricacies of contemporary economies and the ways in which they affect different countries, as well as getting an insight into the way corporations operate. Furthermore, I developed an interest in the practice of negotiation and realized the importance of adequate cultural awareness.

My introduction to the financial aspects of a business and theoretical market situations while using different models in school encouraged me to pursue a six-week work placement in a London-based travel agency. During my time there, I was given tasks in various departments such as Accounting, Sales, Administration and Marketing. Over the course of my internship, Destination Management was of particular interest to me because it focuses on the diversity of existing and potential tourism resources.

As an assistant, I analyzed competitors' prices and updated information on the agency's internal system and assisted with clients' inquiries. I remained consistently eager to learn more and deal with new challenges. I am proud to say that I financed my internship in its entirety, including my accommodation. This added responsibility helped a great deal in developing my professional confidence and fueled my personal independence.

Following my time in the workplace, I know that I would love to have the chance to study concepts of hospitality and tourism, and would flourish given the opportunity to put these theoretical frameworks into practice. With the expanded specialized insight that this study would provide, I am hoping to focus on the field of sustainable tourism as my eventual specialization.

I am immensely dedicated when it comes to aspects that I am passionate about, including choosing a school that is further away in order to study an international course. I have no doubt that I will enjoy this course because I am highly interested in what I am already focusing on in my secondary education, and I am keen on working in an international environment which would foster and develop my existing organizational skill.

I have become involved in a project at my current school invested in contextualizing my own environment. The work involves installing stone memorials - “Stolpersteine” - dedicated to the Jewish families who were seized during the rise of National Socialism in Freiburg. I am a passionate reader, particularly interested in poetry and non-fiction texts in both English and German.

I take advantage of opportunities to exercise my own creative instinct through writing and showcasing my own poetry and guitar composition. I am also continuously committed to exploring visual art and museum culture, predominantly contemporary photography. I have been an avid skateboarder for some time and am looking forward to integrating myself in the skateboarding scene of a new city.

As a foreign student, I have proven my adaptability and keen interest in international travel and study, both to myself and others. Consequently, I believe that my outside perspective and efforts to support and engage with new environments would yield positive and constructive contributions to the university’s community.
