Eligibility Criteria

Previous criteria are non-negotiable:

• Your PhD study must be conducted in New Zealand (not from a distance)
• You cannot hold citizenship or permanent residency status in New Zealand or Australia
• You must be from a developing country.
• You can only apply to one of the available projects.

This scholarship offers:

• New Zealand University annual tuition fees and associated student levies up to a total of NZ $10,000 NZD per year 
• An annual living stipend of NZ $40,696 NZD per year (tax free)
• Medical insurance cover up to NZ $700 NZD per year 
• Visa application costs to a maximum of NZ $1,000 NZD 
• Return flights to New Zealand up to a maximum of NZ $6,000 NZD 
• Book and thesis preparation allowance of up to NZ $1,500 NZD (one-off)

• Evidence of citizenship for every country for which you hold citizenship
• Meet the requirements to enroll for a PhD programme at the selected University

• Curriculum Vitae
• One page Motivation letter highlighting why you would be the best candidate for the project you selected.

You will also need to provide the names and emails of two academic referees for your references.

Age Requirements

To apply for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship. This means if you are 17 years of age when you apply, you must have your 18th birthday before you start your scholarship in semester one. Exception for Samoa: Scholars from Samoa can be 17 years of age when they commence their scholarship.

There is no upper age limit for applicants. This means if you are 18 and over, you can apply. However, applicants who are under 40 years of age are preferred for New Zealand Scholarships for university or tertiary students.

Academic Requirements

As part of the New Zealand Scholarships application process, you need to choose your preferred education institution and preferred courses. Scholarship applicants don’t need to apply for admission to their preferred education institution and courses but they need to check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are set by your chosen education institution so you must check minimum entry requirements on their website before you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

English Requirements

Each university or education institution sets the minimum level of English you need for your preferred courses, so check their website.

Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:

•  an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0 • a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21 • an overall PTE Academic score of 58 with no communicative skills score less than 50 • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 176 with no bands less than 169.

Generally, to study for an undergraduate qualification, you must have at least:

• an overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band less than 5.5 • a TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21 • an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no communication skills score less than 42 • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 169 with no bands less than 162.

Contribution to their Country’s Development

Scholars are expected to contribute to their country’s social or economic development for two years after completing their scholarship study. The purpose of a New Zealand Scholarship is to fund the training of citizens from developing countries, so they can positively impact on their country’s development by sharing new skills and knowledge gained from their study. That is why scholars are expected to return home after their scholarship for at least two years to contribute to the social and economic development of their own country.

Work Experience Requirements

When assessing scholarship applications, applicants who want to study courses that align strongly with their current work experience and applicants who will continue working in their current job sector after they finish their scholarship are preferred.

Lincoln University Doctoral Scholarships

This scholarship was established to provide opportunities for students to pursue PhD study and research at Lincoln University.

All applicants please note:

• To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you require a conditional offer of admission at Lincoln University at the time the scholarship applications close (1 st October). To ensure you have a conditional offer by this date, you need to commence applying for PhD study at least 4 months prior.

New Zealand Government Scholarships Covers the following benefits for Undergrad, Master, and PhD

The winners of the New Zealand Government Scholarship 2023-2024 will receive the following benefits:

• New Zealand will sponsor their full tuition fees
• living allowance (a stipend) of NZ$491 per week. This will help with a scholar’s basic living expenses, but it is not enough to cover the living costs of any family members
• an establishment allowance of NZ$3000. This is to help with set-up costs in New Zealand. For example, you can use it for accommodation expenses, textbooks, or other study materials
• and medical insurance when you are in New Zealand
• and travel to and from your own country. This is for travel from your own country at the start of the scholarship, and for return travel at the end of your scholarship
• travel insurance
• travel home during your scholarship (We allow for one or two trips home, depending on the length of your scholarship)
• help with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students

Your Education institution will organize your travel and look after you on arrival

The International Students Office at your university or education institution will organize travel to your study location and your accommodation. They will also look after you on arrival at your study location. They can answer any questions you may have about your courses, financial allowances, or payments.

Your study starts the year after you apply

Each year, we conduct one round of scholarship applications for each country.

If you are successful, you will start your study in semester one in February or March of the following year. (The exception is when your study programme is only available from semester two.) Check the website of your education institution for the exact start dates for your courses. You must be available to start your study on time.

The international student office at your preferred education institution will make sure you arrive at your study location before your courses start. You will have time for orientation and to settle into your new accommodation.

You must complete your study in New Zealand on time

You must complete your study within the time period allocated by your education institution for your chosen academic programme.

New Zealand scholarship winners must comply with these conditions

Scholars must meet all the conditions of a scholarship. Scholars could lose their academic scholarships if they fail to meet these conditions.

For example, all scholars must attend classes, complete compulsory assignments, and sit all exams. All scholars must meet all the course requirements of their educational institution on time. Your education institution offers extra academic and personal support if a scholar asks for it.

Academic requirements for the New Zealand Government Scholarship

Scholars agree to meet all of the academic requirements outlined in the Letter of Scholarship Offer and in the New Zealand Scholarships Policy Handbook. This includes attending all classes, completing all assessments that are compulsory course requirements, and sitting all exams. You are required to achieve satisfactory academic progress in accordance with the continuation criteria set by both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the academic institution.

Eligibility Requirements to apply for the New Zealand Government Scholarship

To apply for a New Zealand Scholarship, you must meet all of the eligibility criteria. You can complete the online questionnaire below to confirm whether you can apply.

The Eligibility questionnaire will check in detail if you meet all of the eligibility criteria. The Eligibility questionnaire will check things such as:

#1 Age Requirement:

To apply for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship. This means if you are 17 years of age when you apply, you must have your 18 th  birthday before you start your scholarship in semester one.

Exception for Samoa: Applicants applying for the Samoa Foundation intake can be 17 years of age when they commence their scholarship.

There is no upper age limit for applicants. This means if you are 18 and over, you can apply. However, we do prefer applicants who are under 40 years of age for New Zealand Scholarships for university or tertiary students.

#2 Academic Requirement:

Successful scholarship applicants must meet both the academic entry requirements and the English language requirements determined by each education institution. Check you meet academic entry requirements and English language requirements

As part of the New Zealand Scholarships application process, you need to choose your preferred education institution and preferred courses. Scholarship applicants don’t need to apply for admission to their preferred education institutions and courses.

But scholarship applicants do need to check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are set by your chosen  education institution  so you must check minimum entry requirements on their website before you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

Ph.D. applicants should look for a supervisor as soon as possible

From an early stage, Ph.D. scholarship applicants should look for and email suitable Ph.D. supervisors at New Zealand universities. Ph.D. scholarship applicants who make it to the interview stage will need to provide evidence at the interview that they have either secured a supervisor or are in active discussions with a potential supervisor.

#3 English Language Requirement:

You do not need to sit an English language test or provide English language test scores when you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

If we select you for the applicant shortlist during our scholarship selection process, then you will need to provide your English language test scores.

New Zealand Government Scholarship Council accepts test scores from these four English competency testing systems:

• IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) OR
• TOEFL (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) OR
• PTE Academic (the Pearson Test of English Academic) OR
• Cambridge Academic English (advanced).

If you have passed an IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test to the required level during the last 12 months, then your university or education institution may accept these test scores.

If you do not have IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test scores from the last 12 months, we will tell applicants on the shortlist, if and when they need to sit one of these English competency tests.

Exemption from English language test requirement: If you have already completed some of your previous qualifications in English, your preferred education institution may not require any IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) scores from you. This is the decision of your preferred university or education institution only. You should contact your preferred education institution for a final decision about whether you need to provide English test results.

Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:

• an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0
• a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
• an overall PTE Academic score of 58 with no communicative skills score less than 50
• a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 176 with no bands less than 169.

Generally, to study for an undergraduate qualification, you must have at least:

• an overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band less than 5.5
• a TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
• an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no communication skills, score less than 42
• a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 169 with no bands less than 162.

New Zealand Government Scholarship Council Sponsors your English Language Test Fee

English language testing takes place during the final stages of our scholarship selection process. Only applicants on our scholarship shortlist, need current IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test scores.

In most cases, shortlisted applicants will need to organize and pay for their own IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic tests. Shortlisted applicants will need to book a test with a company that does English language testing close to their location.

If you are on our applicants’ shortlist, you will need to book your IELTS or TOEFL testing as soon as possible. This is because the testing process can take several weeks.

You may lose the chance to get a New Zealand Scholarship if your English language testing application form is late or incomplete or inaccurate.

They will organize and pay for the IELTS test for shortlisted applicants from these countries:

• Timor-Leste
• Solomon Islands
• Samoa (except Samoa Foundation applicants)
• Papua New Guinea

#4 Work Experience Requirement:

Postgraduate scholarship applicants or applicants, who finished high school a few years ago, must have relevant work experience. When assessing New Zealand scholarship applications, they prefer applicants who want to study courses that align strongly with their current work experience. We prefer applicants who will continue working in their current job sector after they finish their scholarship.

On their New Zealand Scholarships application form, applicants must describe how their previous work experience relates to their proposed courses or career. Postgraduate applicants or applicants who finished high school a few years ago must have the following work experience:

• One year of full-time work experience (i.e. 30 hours or more per week), OR
• Two years of part-time work experience (i.e. up to 29 hours per week).

Work experience can be either paid, unpaid, or voluntary.

Exception for school leavers and first-year undergraduate students: These two types of scholarship applicants do not need work experience:

• Applicants who are in their final year of Secondary School, OR
• Applicants who are in their first year of tertiary study that was started in the academic year immediately after completing Secondary School.

Documents Required for New Zealand Government Scholarship Application Submission online

The following are the documents and answers to the questions that are required and asked by the online portal of the New Zealand Government Scholarship online application submission website.

What do you need for application submission on the online application website of the New Zealand Government Scholarship?

Please make sure to prepare answers to the following questions before starting your online application for the New Zealand Government Scholarship:

• provide an email address: a current email address that you use regularly
• describe a situation when you had a problem and solved it
• provide your name, birth date, physical address, and phone number
• list your preferred courses and the education institution for your scholarship

Note: Your preferred courses must progress from the highest qualification that you have previously completed.

• describe how your preferred courses relate to one of our recommended study subjects for your country
• describe the skills and knowledge you want to gain from your preferred courses
• provide convincing reasons why you want to study in New Zealand
• list any awards or prizes you have won or articles you have published
• list the qualifications you have already completed
• provide the details of previous jobs or work experience
• describe how your work experience relates to your preferred courses or career (Note: School leavers and first-year undergraduate applicants do not need work experience.)
• describe a situation when you had to work very hard to achieve your goals
• describe how these skills and knowledge are important to your country’s social and economic development
• describe what challenges you could find as a new scholar in New Zealand and how you would deal with these challenges.
• describe a situation when you created a successful relationship at work or with someone in a community group

Make sure to have the following documents for the New Zealand Scholarship application submission:

With your application form, you need to provide:

• A copy of your academic records or transcripts, showing your grades
• The grading scale of your education institution
• Motivation Letter
• Statement of purpose
• Study Plan Essay
• Research Proposal from Ph.d. applicants
• Recommendation Letters
• Translations of these documents into English.

At this stage, your academic records don’t need to be verified by an official. Verified records are stamped and signed by a solicitor, a notary public, or a Justice of the Peace. Their signature confirms that your academic record is genuine.

Applying for a Ph.D. Study Sponsored by New Zealand Scholarships

Scholarship applicants may apply to undertake doctoral studies in any of the identified sectors.  You must, however, be able to show that there are employment opportunities on your return that require you to undertake unsupervised post-doctoral research or to teach at a degree level.

You must also be able to show how your proposed research proposal will benefit your country. Ph.D. scholarship applicants who make it to the interview stage will need to provide evidence at the interview that they have either secured a supervisor or are in active discussions with a potential supervisor.

Ph.D. and Master’s by Thesis applicants must describe their proposed research

If you apply for a Ph.D. scholarship or a Master’s scholarship (by thesis), on your application form you need to describe:

• Your proposed Ph.D. or Master’s research plan and research design
• Your proposed approach to your research
• For Ph.D. applicants: the employment opportunities on your return that will require you to undertake unsupervised post-doctoral research, or to teach at a degree level
• For Ph.D. applicants: how your proposed research proposal will benefit your country.

The following documents are not required at the time of application for a Ph.D.:

You don’t need to provide these things with your application form:

• verified copies of your academic records or transcripts for completed qualifications
• English language test scores
• verified copies of your birth certificate, passport, and government ID
• a student visa
• a Letter of Place from a university or education institution
• confirmation of a Ph.D. supervisor (Ph.D. scholarship applicants)

No need to have a Ph.D. supervisor when you apply

As a Ph.D. scholarship applicant, you do not need to prove that you already have a Ph.D. supervisor, when you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

But later in the Ph.D. process, if we select you for an interview, then you must prove that you have a Ph.D. supervisor, or you are close to confirming a Ph.D. supervisor.

In the interview, we will want to see emails between you and a suitable Ph.D. supervisor, confirming that:

• your Ph.D. research topic is viable, and
• they are willing to be your Ph.D. supervisor.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that you look for an email suitable for Ph.D. supervisors as soon as possible.

How to Apply for a New Zealand Student VISA?

You only need to apply for a student visa, if we offer you a New Zealand Scholarship and you accept that offer. But before you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship, we strongly recommend that you check the student visa requirements on the relevant immigration website, listed below. This is because you can only study abroad on a New Zealand scholarship if you successfully get a student visa to study in New Zealand.

As soon as a scholar accepts a New Zealand Scholarship, they must apply for a student visa on the relevant immigration website below. Once you accept the New Zealand Scholarship we recommend you start your visa application immediately. The visa application process can take two to three months and it involves medical tests.

If a scholarship recipient does not get a student visa, we will have to withdraw the scholarship.

Scholars can bring their families to New Zealand, but we do not cover the costs. Each family member will need to apply for the relevant New Zealand visa:

New Zealand will reimburse some visa and medical costs

Most scholars have to pay for the cost of a visa application and any medical tests before they come to New Zealand. When you arrive in New Zealand, your chosen university or education institution will pay you back for the cost of a visa, and any medical tests. Please keep all payment receipts, as you will need to show these to your university or education institution to get your money back.

Exception for some Pacific countries:

In some Pacific countries, your local New Zealand High Commission will pay for the cost of your visa application and any medical tests.

Conduct Requirements of New Zealand Scholars

Scholars agree to maintain an acceptable standard of conduct while on scholarship, as specified by the Scholarship Conditions in the Letter of Scholarship Offer. The Conditions apply to the scholar from the date of departure from their home country for their country of study, until the date of arrival in their home country on completion of the scholarship.

Acceptable scholar conduct includes:

• abiding by the laws of the study country
• treating others with respect
• behaving with honesty and integrity
• acting in a manner that reflects your role as a representative of your home country

Scholars should be aware that it is a criminal offense to use violence of any kind against another person, which includes physical, sexual, or psychological violence against family members such as partners or children. It is also a crime to neglect or exploit children in your care, or to use the physical discipline of any kind.

Project 89/Scheme 89

Funded by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) of Vietnam, the aim of Project 89 (also known as Scheme 89) is on enhancing the capacity for lecturers and management officials of higher education institutions to meet the basic and comprehensive education and training innovation demand for the period 2019 – 2030. The project aims to train lecturers and administrators with doctorate/PhD qualifications. The scholarship includes a stipend, tuition fee, travel costs, roundtrip airfares, health insurance and other associated costs.

Tongarewa International Scholarship

The Tongarewa International Scholarships celebrate the University's commitment to our international student community. We award a range of these scholarships to international students each year. This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will go towards tuition fees for one year of study. Applicants can be either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree programme at Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington.

Scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence. They apply to study in the year following application and will be credited to tuition fees. Shortlisted candidates may be requested to provide additional information to support their application. Recipients of these scholarships are guaranteed an offer of a place in one of our Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by University Accommodation Wellington by their deadline.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

• international students who are paying full international fees
• entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if you:

• completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school
• completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme
• are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of our overseas partner universities
• are in your second year of study in the same degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

The following documentation must be provided as part of your online scholarship application:

• a personal statement of up to 500 words outlining why you wish to study at Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals and why you merit the scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions and details of your involvement in your school or community
• full transcripts and other documentation relevant to the qualification type
• an offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).

Selection process

Selection will be made by a panel made up of appropriate Wellington University International staff.

Additional information

These scholarships are for partial fees. These scholarships will be credited to tuition fees after the final withdrawal date for the courses of the trimester the recipient(s) have been awarded for (roughly two weeks in to the trimester).

Regulations and conditions

• A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
• All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
• The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
• The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
• Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
• Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
• At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.

Waikato MBA scholarships support regional business talent

Discover the winners of the Waikato MBA Emerging Leaders Award winners for 2023.

The University of Waikato has awarded scholarships to four Master of Business Administration (MBA) students who have been identified as up-and-coming leaders in their regional communities.

Dr Nadia Trent, Director of the University of Waikato MBA programme in the Waikato Management School.

The Waikato MBA Emerging Leaders Award winners for 2023 are Jeremy Harwood from Auckland, Nikki Cornell from Te Puke, Andrew Tattle from Taupō, and Olivia Buckley from Te Kūiti.

They have each been awarded $4,000 towards their MBA tuition fees from the University’s Waikato Management School.

The award recognises their leadership contribution to business and the community, management experience, potential for future leadership impact, and the role their MBA will have on their business and the regional economy.

The judges included Pro Vice-Chancellor of Management  Matt Bolger , Associate Dean Academic and Operations Michelle Jordan Tong,  Professor Brad Jackson  and   Dr Nadia Trent , Director of the Waikato MBA programme.

“It was tough picking the top four – it was very competitive,” says Dr Trent.

Leadership is one of the fundamental pillars of the Waikato MBA programme.

“Your leadership isn’t just at work – it’s who you are, it’s in what you do as a person, in your whānau and family, and in your community.”

This holistic approach is reflected in the supportive culture of the Waikato MBA, where students build strong connections with one another.

“What we are extremely proud of in the Waikato MBA programme is the cohort experience that we offer students. It’s a smaller group with a real ‘family vibe’, facilitated by face-to-face teaching.”

One of the Emerging Leaders Award winners, Jeremy Harwood, 37, commutes from his home in Auckland to attend the Waikato MBA programme every second Saturday.

“Waikato Management School has a great reputation,” says Jeremy, who is a Director, Senior Analyst at Westpac’s head office in the Auckland CBD.

He’s delighted to receive the scholarship and is enjoying the knowledge and connections he is developing through the programme, with the aim to become a "flexible and effective senior leader".

“Our cohort is full of awesome people who are really open and keen to learn. I am enjoying hearing everyone's perspectives on different topics; it is really refreshing to look at things from a different angle and understand what people in other industries care about.”

Another winner, Nikki Cornell, 42, hopes the MBA will enable her to “level up” in her career, and open up new opportunities.

“The Waikato MBA is internationally recognised, which means I can use it anywhere in the world,” says Nikki, a senior human resources advisor at DMS Progrowers, a kiwifruit orchard management and post-harvest operator in Te Puke.

“The lecturers are brilliant, so knowledgeable and experienced, and they are genuinely interested in our experiences and want to help us succeed.”

First launched in 1988, the Waikato MBA programme is highly practical, relevant and very competitive compared to other universities.

The 180-point master’s programme generally takes two years to complete, taught part-time through a combination of face-to-face Saturday sessions and online lectures.

The Waikato MBA programme also involves an international study tour. This year’s cohort are travelling to Singapore in October, with the costs included in their MBA programme fees.

The Waikato MBA programme attracts a wide range of students, says Dr Trent.

“They can range from self-made business owners and entrepreneurs wanting to formalise their experience, to middle managers wanting to take the next step in their career, and functional specialists moving into more senior roles wanting to diversify their business knowledge.”

“It’s a wonderful pressure-cooker situation that prepares people for the next level of leadership. It’s life changing.”

Waikato Management School  has held Triple Crown Accreditation from EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB since 2005, which is achieved by less than one percent of business schools worldwide.

Waikato is also ranked number one in New Zealand for Business and Economics by the Times Higher Education World University Subject Rankings for 2023 and placed first in New Zealand for research in the 2024 QS World University Rankings .

FNR Celebrates Students at Annual Awards, Scholarship Ceremony

Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources recognized the department’s student award and scholarship recipients at a ceremony on April 17, 2023.

Academic merit awards are given to a sophomore, junior, and senior within each major who has the highest academic achievement (cumulative GPA). Each major also selects one individual for its leadership award, typically a senior who has been exemplary within their major or the department as a whole.

Each major also puts forth a nominee for the Stanley Coulter Leadership Award, which recognizes the department’s outstanding student leader. It carries the name of Stanley Coulter, former Dean of Science, who initiated Purdue’s forestry program in 1914. Mr. John Sample and other early forestry graduates established the Coulter Fund in honor of Dean Coulter, and to recognize the achievements of students in Forestry and Natural Resources. The winner of this award has demonstrated strong leadership and responsible citizenship in activities at the department, school, university, and community level.

Shimizu also received the Forestry Leadership Award.

The FNR faculty presents a trio of research and engagement awards.

The L. David Mech Distinguished Undergraduate Research Award, named in honor of Dr. L. David Mech, a research biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the world’s foremost authority on wolf ecology, who earned his PhD in wildlife ecology in 1962. The award recognizes a senior, who has, by virtue of contributions made independently or in conjunction with ongoing studies, shows the greatest potential for future success as a research scientist.

The 2023-24 honoree of the Distinguished Undergraduate Research Award is Amanda King . Amanda is a senior wildlife major with a minor in aquatic sciences. After graduation, she will be pursuing her master's at Virginia Tech studying northern long-eared bats in coastal New Jersey.

Alexis Proudman received the FNR Undergraduate Research Award, which recognizes an undergraduate who, by virtue of contributions made independently or in conjunction with ongoing studies, shows the great potential for future success as a research scientist. Alexis is graduating in May, and is currently searching for a master's position. After taking a research internship her freshman year, Alexis knew she wanted to pursue a career in research. She currently has a paper in review at the Journal of Mammalogy, which she says was only possible with the help of her mentors Dr. Liz Flaherty and Dr. Landon Jones.

Alex Dudley received the FNR Undergraduate Engagement Award, which recognizes a senior who has demonstrated excellence in engagement and has shown the greatest potential for fulfilling the extension and research components of the Land Grant Mission. Alex is graduating at the end of the semester and will be pursuing a Master's Degree at Wichita State University in Kansas. Her research will focus on using cattle grazing as a proxy for historical bison grazing to increase plant diversity. While at Purdue, she has been heavily involved in the Purdue student chapter of The Wildlife Society, acting as its president for the 2023-24 school year. She also has done research in Dr. Pat Zollner's lab, and has held multiple jobs within the department. She recently received the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award for the North Central Section of The Wildlife Society. Dudley also received the FNR Outstanding Senior Award, the Forestry Academic Merit Senior Award, the Society of American Foresters Senior Award and the Wildlife Leadership Award at the awards/scholarship ceremony.

Dudley was honored with several other awards: The Society of American Foresters Senior Award, the Forestry Academic Merit Senior Award, The Wildlife Leadership Award and the FNR Outstanding Senior Award, in addition to the receiving the Claude M. Gladden Memorial Fund Scholarship. 

FNR recognizes a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior outstanding student, an award which is given to the most outstanding student in each class as demonstrated by educational accomplishment, research, community service, student organization involvement and leadership, and involvement at the department, college, or university level.

• FNR Outstanding Freshman :  Lydia Pultorak. Lydia is a freshman majoring in Wildlife with a minor in Forest Ecosystems. She will be working for the North Carolina Bird Atlas this summer conducting surveys of breeding birds on the coastal side of North Carolina.
• FNR Outstanding Sophomore :  Rebeca Appelmann, Beca is a sophomore in Wildlife with a minor in Natural Resources and Environmental Science. She is currently conducting research in the Agronomy Department about soil nitrogen bioavailability. She is also involved in The Wildlife Society and FNR Ambassadors. She intends to work as a park ranger or with other conservation research.
• FNR Outstanding Junior :  Alyssa Johnson. Alyssa is a junior in Wildlife, and she will be a teaching assistant at Practicum this upcoming summer! She looks forward to helping teach and mentor this year’s cohort of practicum students, especially during herps week! After TA’ing practicum, she will be spending the summer in Silverton, Colorado exploring the mountains and volunteering on a long-term habitat monitoring project!
• FNR Outstanding Senior :  Alex Dudley.

Aquatic Science Awards Senior Leadership Award:  Megan Merryman. Megan is a senior and a double major in wildlife and aquatic sciences. After graduation, she hopes to find a job where she can work with her community and help others learn or gain experience in these fields. Right now, she is conducting research on the diel and seasonal movement patterns of bluegill and largemouth bass using PIT tags and receivers in an experimental pond. Her research team also related individual movement patterns to that individual's susceptibility to angling. This summer, she plans on finishing up that research and submitting a manuscript for publication.

Sophomore Academic Merit Award : Austin Mygrant. Austin is a sophomore aquatic sciences major with a fisheries concentration and a minor in wildlife science.

Junior Academic Merit Award:  Alexis Snook. Alexis is a junior in aquatic sciences, who is currently working as a teaching assistant and as an undergraduate research assistant in a lab on campus. This summer, she will be serving as a teaching assistant for Summer Practicum. 

Senior Academic Merit Award:  Emily Troisi. Emily Troisi is a senior in Aquatic Sciences, and intends to pursue work in either research or pond management.

Forestry Awards Leadership Award:  Jonathan Shimizu.

Sophomore Academic Merit Award:  Benjamin Wegener and Albert Spalding. Ben is a sophomore in Forestry with a concentration in forest science. His undergraduate thesis is focused on forest economics and he hopes to research the economic impact of high impact understory invasive shrubs.  Albert is a sophomore forestry major with a sustainable biomaterials concentration.

Junior Academic Merit Award:  Leah Griffin. Leah is a junior in Forestry, as well as the treasurer and an active member of the Student Chapter of Environmental Education. She plans to return to Iron River, Michigan as a teaching assistant for the 2024 Summer Forestry Practicum.

Senior Academic Merit Award:  Alex Dudley.

Wildlife Awards Senior Leadership Award:  Alex Dudley.

Sophomore Academic Merit Award : Madison Parr and Elena Boughton. Madison is a sophomore in Wildlife, and will be attending Summer Practicum this year in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She is currently involved in a research lab focusing on feeding mechanisms of surgeonfish around the Hawaiian Islands.

Elena is a sophomore in Wildlife, and will be attending practicum in Michigan this summer. She currently works on a bird window collision project for the Fernandez-Juricic visual and behavioral ecology lab. Additionally, she is involved in Dr. Dunning's songbird banding lab. She is an active member of The Wildlife Society. Next year, she will be a co-leader for the Northern Saw-whet Owl banding station, and the secretary of TWS. She wants to pursue a career in avian research or wildlife habitat management.

Junior Academic Merit Award : Alyssa Johnson.

Senior Academic Merit Award : Anne Talbot. Anne is a senior in wildlife. She co-leads the Purdue Northern Saw-Whet Owl banding station and is the Birds Working Group Leader of The Wildlife Society. She is currently working on an independent research project investigating if color signals of differing levels of contrast will affect the distance at which songbirds flee from predators, specifically domestic cats. After graduating, she will be working in New Mexico at Bandelier National Monument surveying for the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse and a variety of other species. 

Outstanding Aquatic Sciences Camper Award:  Emily Troisi

Outstanding Forestry Camper Award:  Austin Marshall. Austin is a senior in forestry, pursuing a degree in forest management with a minor in computer information technology. The Bunker Hill, Indiana, native is an active officer of the Society of American Foresters and the president of the Student Association for Fire Ecology. He is currently planning to find a federal or state level position. 

Outstanding Wildlife Camper Award:  Joe Ogas. Joe is a senior in wildlife. He plans to travel after graduation, working field jobs and gaining new experiences. He is currently studying abroad at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. This summer, he will be a counselor at Camp Watitoh in Becket, Massachusetts. 

In addition to the academic merit, outstanding camper and leadership awards, the wildlife major also gives out four other awards: the Durward Allen Memorial Award, the Kirkpatrick Memorial Graduate Student Award, the L. David Mech Distinguished Undergraduate Research Award and the William A. Rafferty Award.

Durward Allen Memorial Award

Durward Allen was a distinguished member of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources and internationally recognized as one of the nation’s leading wildlife authorities. In honor of Dr. Allen, this award is presented to an outstanding junior majoring in Wildlife.

The 2023-24 honoree of the Durward Allen Memorial Award is Alex Dudley . 

This award was established by the widow and two daughters of Charles Kirkpatrick, The recipient must be a wildlife graduate student within one year of graduation (either before or after).

The 2023-24 honoree of the Kirkpatrick Memorial Graduate Student Award is Alison Ochs . Alison completed her undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke College, where her experiences in field work and ecology launched her research career. She continued her work with an internship at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, where she gained the experience and skills needed to start a PhD program at Purdue, where she worked with Professors Rob Swihart and Mike Saunders on examining the effects of forest management on terrestrial salamanders. She completed her PhD this past December and is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher under Professor Lenore Fahrig at Carleton University studying the effects of roads on wildlife.

This award is named in honor of Dr. L. David Mech, recipient of a PhD in wildlife ecology from Purdue in 1962. Dr. Mech, a research biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, is the world’s foremost authority on wolf ecology. In 1995, Dr. Mech was named a Distinguished Alumni of the Purdue University College of Agriculture. He was also a recipient of the Aldo Leopold Award, the highest honor bestowed by The Wildlife Society.

This award was established by the faculty in wildlife to recognize a senior who has, by virtue of contributions made independently or in conjunction with ongoing studies, shown the greatest potential for future success as a research scientist. Selection is based on the student’s curiosity, intellect, perseverance, problem solving, and communication skills.

The 2023-24 recipient of the L. David Mech Distinguished Undergraduate Research Award is Amanda King . Amanda is a senior in wildlife with a minor in aquatic sciences. After graduation, she will be pursuing her master's at Virginia Tech studying northern long-eared bats in coastal New Jersey.

William A. Rafferty was a friend of Purdue University’s College of Agriculture who operated a large farm near Morocco, Indiana. Rafferty believed in the ideals of honor, integrity, and patriotism. To commemorate William A. Rafferty, this award was established to recognize the potential for citizenship and leadership in a senior Wildlife student.

The 2023-24 recipient of the William A. Rafferty Award is Keegan Abeson .

Abeson is a senior majoring in wildlife with a minor in forest ecosystems. He is the current vice president of the Purdue Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society, and a co-leader of the Northern Saw-Whet Owl banding station. After graduation, Keegan will be spending the summer working on banding and tracking birds for a graduate student's project at Purdue. After that Keegan is pursuing a graduate school position, focusing on ornithology and migratory biology.

Other Awards

Forest Summerfield , a senior in forestry with a concentration in urban forestry, received the Indiana Arborist Association Ramsey Award. He also received the Bartlett Tree Foundation Scholarship, the Harvey Barb and Harvey Holt Urban Forestry Scholarship and the Davey Tree Foundation Aboricultural Scholarship. The Ramsey Award is given to a Purdue student who has a professional interest in some aspect of urban forestry. The award, which is given to students who have completed their sophomore year and are in good academic standing, is named in honor of Paul Ramsey, who was an outstanding professional arborist in Indiana

Summerfield plans to attend grad school and eventually do university extension work. He is the current president of the Purdue Student Society of Arboriculture and Vice President of the Purdue Society of Applied Fire Ecology. Forest is working on a project in Dr. Furze's lab to analyze tree ring widths in urban hotspots versus coolspots to compare growth rates.

Kathryn Buckles was honored with the Great Lakes Research Award, which is presented to an undergraduate student enrolled in an FNR major and conducting research focused on the Laurentian Great Lakes. The initial contribution for the award was made in the name of Dr. Tom Lauer, who earned his PhD from the department and focused his career on university education and Lake Michigan ecological research.

Katie is a junior majoring in Wildlife and minoring in Aquatic Sciences, and will be doing an education Internship at Columbian Park Zoo in Lafayette, Indiana, this summer while continuing to work at Purdue's Aquaculture Research Lab in West Lafayette.

Trip to bangladesh connects iu students, staff to locally-sold tea.

If you visit the Campus Cafe in the Wright building, you’ll find four flavors of Teatulia tea available for purchase. In March over spring break, three IU students and two staff members traveled to Bangladesh, where they visited the tea garden that tea is sourced from.

The trip was a collaboration between the IU School of Education and IU Dining. Katie Cierniak , Director of INSPIRE Living-Learning Center, and Rahul Shrivastav , Executive Director of IU Dining & Hospitality, accompanied students Anika Vinard, Sabine Thomas, and Kathleen Suelzer. The trip lasted 10 days, giving the group a chance to visit the tea garden run by the company Kazi & Kazi in the northernmost tip of Bangladesh and to immerse themselves in the local culture. It was a chance for all who went to see how they are connected to a community half a world away. 

“Bangladesh and India are so different from the U.S. in so many ways, and so it’s a lot to absorb. For all (the) students, it was their first time in that part of the world, and they really handled all of those changes with flexibility, understanding, and eagerness to get to know about everything there, not just about the tea,” Cierniak said.

Even though the students are studying different majors, there was something relevant to everybody on the trip - and it provided an opportunity to see how all of these things are affected. Schooling doesn’t happen in a vacuum, Cierniak pointed out, adding the experience helped answer the question of how the tea garden was connected to higher education in the U.S. 

Vinard, who is majoring in special education/elementary education, had never flown internationally prior to the trip. While in Bangladesh, she spoke with the women who worked at the tea garden and helped local children build butterflies out of pipe cleaners during a craft activity.

“It was a different way of interacting with kids than I'd ever experienced, and it changed my thinking on what all schools have and how they teach kids,” she said. “Being able to go to a country where English isn't the predominant language and be the minority was interesting because we got to see things and experience things that others experience all the time in the US. I would do it 10 times over because it was beautiful and it changed one of my perspectives.”

Thomas, an International Studies major at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, had extra interest in the trip as the president of Fair Trade at IU : “I was especially honored to visit Bangladesh's first and only Fair Trade tea garden. It made me proud to know that IU supports such a wonderful garden. Its impacts on the environment and the local community are truly outstanding!”

Kathleen Suelzer applied to go on the trip because as an Environmental Sustainability Studies major, she is interested in sustainable agriculture as well as how climate impacts are affecting developing countries such as Bangladesh. 

“We got to see up-close how tea is plucked by the women who have been plucking it for decades. We even got a chance to pluck some tea, and it was not easy to do,” Suelzer explained. “I was really impacted hearing from women in the community how Kazi and Kazi’s cattle lending program that offers cows in the form of loans helps build up women. We had amazing food and hospitality from Kazi and Kazi.”

For Shrivastav, the trip was a way to teach and learn more about something very important for him when it comes to food: supply chain transparency. 

“One of the most important things about this trip is I'm taking students to learn. We can learn together about what we are doing in this remote place, why this place particularly, because we use their teas everywhere and I've been wanting to go and see where the teas come from,” he said. “The students being there and planting tea themselves was amazing.”

He called the trip a pilgrimage for food, saying it was one of the best international trips he’s ever been on - and said from the hotels to the farm, all the food the group ate was amazing. 

Cierniak and Shrivastav are planning another trip to Bangladesh next year, where they plan on connecting more students with the tea garden - and with the people and culture there.
