Review: Apple iPad Pro (6th Gen, 2022)

Apple iPad Pro 6th Gen

I can count the number of new features in the iPad Pro on one hand. There’s a new M2 processor, an exclusive Apple Pencil capability, the ability to record ProRes video, and support for Wi-Fi 6E. That’s it. Yes, you get all the standout features from its predecessors, like the mini LED display (on the 12.9-inch model ), a 120-Hz refresh rate , quad speakers for richer sound, Face ID, and a lidar sensor. Apple has also kept the starting prices the same—$799 for the 11-inch iPad Pro and $1,099 for the larger model—but there’s still not much excitingly new here.

The iPad Pro remains the best tablet money can buy . But Apple is the richest company in the world. It could’ve added a few of the same upgrades it gave to the new 10th-gen iPad ($449) , like the landscape selfie camera, support for the revamped Magic Keyboard Folio, and maybe snazzier color choices. A MagSafe charging port like on the new MacBook Air (or really, any extra ports) would’ve also been great. There’s no need to upgrade to this machine if you have an iPad Pro from 2020 or 2021. Maybe even if you have one from 2018—features that were supposed to be specific to the M-series chips, like Stage Manager , are now available for older iPad Pro models . But for newcomers with the cash, you’ll be more than satisfied.

Apple iPad Pro screen

Apple gave the iPad Pro the same treatment it gave this year’s 13-inch MacBook Pro —it replaced the M1 processor powering it with the new M2, and wahoo! It’s now a next-gen tablet. Physically, there are zero differences over its predecessor , which is good news because older accessories like cases and folio keyboards are still compatible. Many of the features are also the same, like ProMotion support, 5G connectivity if you opt for the cellular model, and the dual-camera setup with the lidar sensor for augmented reality apps .

As usual, there are two iPad Pro models: an 11-inch iPad Pro (4th gen) and a 12.9-inch model (6th gen). They differ in one major way—the latter employs a mini LED display. It basically offers up much deeper blacks, nicer contrast, and punchier colors thanks to the thousands of LEDs packed into the display panel. Apple introduced this last year , so it’s puzzling that it couldn’t bring this superior screen to the smaller iPad Pro model for feature parity. After all, you’re still spending big bucks on a Pro tablet.

What is new, and exclusive to these two M2-powered slates, is a new Hover Mode feature with the second-generation Apple Pencil . When you hover the stylus millimeters away from the screen, you’ll now be able to preview what will happen before even touching the display. With Scribble, the feature that converts your handwriting into text, hovering over the screen with the Pencil will expand the text field before you write. In the third-party graphic editing app Pixelmator, hovering lets you cycle through presets to see a live preview, or you can hover over a cropped photo to see the original image.

I’ve largely only used this new hover feature in the Notes app to preview color combinations while doodling, but it’s a smart and helpful addition for anyone that frequently reaches for the stylus.

Person using Apple iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard outside at table.

Like last year’s model, the new iPad Pro devices are still compatible with Apple’s Magic Keyboard . However, I’ve now tried the new Magic Keyboard Folio available for the 10th-generation iPad, and daresay I like it more. There’s a larger trackpad that’s more comfortable to use, a row of convenient function keys, and a kickstand that keeps the iPad sturdy. It’s a shame these tweaks didn’t trickle up. Nevertheless, these keyboard accessories are still far too expensive. There are cheaper options worth exploring .

Apple M2 computer chip with glowing colors

The sixth-generation iPad Pro is supposedly more powerful than its predecessor. With the M2 chip, Apple claims the CPU is up to 15 percent faster while the 10-core GPU offers up to 35 percent faster graphics performance over the M1. It handled my daily work tasks—like web browsing, word processing, sending emails and Slack messages, plus taking Zoom calls—swimmingly. Games like Genshin Impact were super smooth thanks to that 120-Hz refresh rate, but I can’t say I noticed much of a difference over last year’s iPad Pro.

It’s iPadOS 16 that’s far more interesting. As someone who always struggled to feel comfortable using iPadOS for work, things have drastically changed with new additions like Stage Manager. The ability to adjust app windows and group them together—and easily switch between them—has transformed my ability to multitask on the tablet. It’s almost enough to get me to ditch my MacBook. Almost.

Some features like Stage Manager are only available on select iPad models, like the iPad Air and older iPad Pro tablets. But it’s worth highlighting that Apple’s cheaper iPads will do nearly everything just as well as its flagship slates. Yes, that even includes the $329 9th-gen iPad . With the M2 models, you must really want that new Hover Mode feature for the Apple Pencil, Wi-Fi 6E support (which is only applicable if you have a Wi-Fi 6E router), and ProRes video capture. The latter lets you record videos in this format for better color quality and less compression.

If none of those new changes matter much to you, then you’ll be happy to hear you can get the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 for $899 right now on Amazon . Use the savings to get an Apple Pencil if you don’t have one. You’ll still end up under $1,000. If you’re debating on the 11-inch iPad Pro, I’d say you should go for the cheaper M1-powered iPad Air instead, frequently on sale for $519 . This year’s iPad lineup is more confusing than ever, and Apple’s latest additions have hardly justified their own existence.

  • The 2022 Apple iPad Pro offers the same external hardware and design as the 2021 model.
  • The biggest upgrades are the latest M2 processor and a new feature for the Apple Pencil.
  • The 2022 iPad Pro remains the best and most powerful tablet if you're willing to pay for it.

Insider Today

While Apple took the opportunity to completely redesign the basic iPad in 2022 , the company chose not to rock the boat with the iPad Pro series. Instead, Apple upgraded both iPad Pro's internal specs, with the 11-inch iPad Pro starting at $799 and the 12.9-inch version selling for $1099.

What the new iPad Pro lacks in any major design upgrades (it looks identical to the 2021 iPad Pro ), it makes up for in more power. Apple swapped the M1 processor for the M2, making it the most powerful and responsive iPad in the entire lineup.

The 2022 iPad Pro offers a familiar pro-level experience with premium features, including the new Hover mode for the second-gen Apple Pencil. For professionals who want the most capable iPad to date, it could be worth jumping on. But if you're a casual user, you and your wallet might be better off looking at the 2021 Pro model.

presentation ipad pro 2022

The 2022 iPad Pro remains the most capable tablet in Apple's current iPad lineup. It's available in two sizes, 11 and 12.9 inches, and features the M2 processor, which makes it faster than previous generations and unlocks the "hover" feature for the Apple Pencil. If you want the best of the best and are willing to pay for it, the 2022 iPad Pro is worth a look.

More for the same, but still top of the line

The big storyline of the 2022 iPad Pro is more of the same hardware. It's still available in two sizes, 11 and 12.9 inches, with the same display, cameras, storage options (128GB to 2TB), speakers, battery life, and colorways.

But even as Apple adopts a modern design language across all iPad models, including rounded display corners, uniform borders around the screen, flat edges, and a flat back, the iPad Pro still stands out for its incredibly thin design.

The iPad Pro's uniform borders are slimmer than the iPad Air and 10th-gen iPad's, which lends to a more premium look. The 11-inch model is lightweight at 1.03 pounds, whereas the 12.9-inch model sits quite heavily at 1.5 pounds, but that's to be expected on such a large iPad.

Both iPad Pro models have the same displays as the 2021 Pro models. The 12.9-inch version still has a better screen than the 11-inch because it uses Apple's Liquid Retina XDR display based on Mini-LED backlighting, which results in a more accurate, bright, and crisp visual experience. Each model includes Apple's 120Hz high-refresh-rate ProMotion display, which produces smooth animations while swiping around iPadOS.

In terms of cameras, the 2022 iPad Pro has the same hardware as the 2021 and 2020 models: 12-megapixel wide and 10-megapixel ultra-wide cameras on the rear, and an ultra-wide 12-megapixel front-facing camera that supports Face ID.

Unfortunately, the iPad Pro still has its front-facing camera on the top edge of the screen, which means you'll be awkwardly positioned on video calls if you're using the tablet in landscape mode, which is highly likely, given the Pro works wonderfully with Apple's Magic Keyboard .

While Center Stage — the feature that keeps you centered in the frame — can help with the bumbling side placement in landscape mode, we're looking forward to the day when all iPads get a landscape-oriented camera, just like the basic iPad .

As for battery life, the iPad Pro's is typical for an iPad — it can stream a video at full brightness for around 5.5 hours.

The biggest upgrade is the M2 chip, but it's pros who will mostly benefit

The 2022 iPad Pro runs on Apple's M2 chip, the same processor that powers the 2022 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. Save for a few minor details, the iPad Pro brings computer-grade power in a slimmer and lighter package.

The biggest question for professionals isn't whether the 2022 iPad Pro is powerful enough — it's the most powerful tablet you can buy. Instead, it's whether the iPadOS versions of the apps they use are as comprehensive as the desktop versions.

Even though Apple claims the upgrade from M1 to M2 provides a 15-percent increase in speed and up to 35 percent faster graphics performance, the difference in casual day-to-day use is minimal. For those who stream videos and run basic apps like social media, games, web browsing, and so on, the iPad Pro's power is excessive.

Professionals could justify the upgrade, but it's a harder sell for most people. It could be worth it if you want to extend the lifespan of your purchase — the iPad Pro will likely outlive the 10th-gen iPad by a few years, and even the M1 iPad Air by a year or so.

The second-gen Apple Pencil, now even more useful

The iPad Pro's M2 processor doesn't just deliver power. It enables the new Hover feature with the second-gen Apple Pencil, making it the ultimate tool for note-takers, artists, or simply those who need more precision than a finger can offer.

Hover lets the iPad Pro detect the Pencil's tip from 12mm above the screen, which gives you a preview of exactly where the tip will land. In the preview, you can see the size of marking you want to make, and even preview the blend of different colors.

It enhances the accuracy and precision that the Apple Pencil is already known for. If you've ever felt the Apple Pencil didn't always land exactly where you wanted it to on an iPad's screen, or whether you've picked the right brush size or the right color, Hover will help with that.

Third-party app developers can integrate Hover into their apps, too. Hovering above a project thumbnail in ProCreate, for example, will play a timeline of your process. You can also combine finger gestures on the screen with Hover to make adjustments, like changing the size of your brush.

In its current iteration, Hover is already useful, and it has the real potential to become utterly indispensable for digital professionals who use the Apple Pencil as more Hover features are added over time.

Impressive as it is, the 2022 iPad Pro is still not a laptop replacement

Even when used with Apple's Magic Keyboard, which includes a trackpad and keyboard, the 2022 iPad Pro doesn't offer the best of both the tablet and laptop worlds, nor is it a substitute for a laptop. It's decidedly a tablet.

Before even considering iPadOS compared to macOS, using an iPad Pro as a laptop doesn't make economic sense. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is only $100 less than the M2 MacBook Air, and cases with keyboards and trackpads will bring the price even higher.

Not to mention that Apple's Magic Keyboard combo with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is much heavier and thicker than the M2 MacBook Air or 14-inch MacBook Pro. To top it off, Apple's laptops have significantly better keyboards and trackpads than the Magic Keyboard.

As for iPadOS, it's still very much a mobile operating system that simply doesn't match the versatility of a full desktop operating system like macOS. Apple has three different features to help with multitasking, including Stage Manager, Slide View, and Split View — it desperately wants to be your laptop. Yet, multitasking on an iPad still isn't as fluid or intuitive as it is on a laptop, and I find myself painfully yearning for my laptop while working.

Your camera and editing workstation in one device, maybe

The iPad Pro differentiates itself from the rest of the iPad lineup with a dual-lens camera setup that includes a 10-megapixel ultra-wide and 12-megapixel main lens.

They take better photos and videos than any iPad, and you can edit them from the iPad Pro. They are also the only iPads to support Lidar sensors, a scanning technology that adds depth to photos — useful for applications like 3D and augmented reality.

However, a recent iPhone will still be a better option for taking photos and videos — the iPhone 14 Pro has superior video recording capabilities with Dolby Vision support, a 3x zoom lens, and Apple's Cinematic Mode for focus transitions. And, you can easily transfer photos and videos taken with an iPhone to the iPad Pro with AirDrop.

With 4K resolution video recording at 60 fps, ProRes support, and video stabilization, the 2022 iPad Pro's cameras might suffice for video hobbyists and some professionals for their video projects. The iPad Pro features stereo audio recording, too, but you'll likely get better sound with a wireless microphone setup.

But video pros and photographers are more likely to use the iPad Pro as a mobile workstation to complement their external cameras, rather than the ones built into the tablet. While it may not be a suitable laptop replacement, the iPad Pro is ideal for these professionals who need something lightweight — their camera equipment will be plenty heavy — yet powerful enough to edit photos and video quickly.

If you like working with power-hungry, pro-grade apps with the Apple Pencil, the iPad Pro is unbeatable. And if you're looking for the biggest screen for the Apple Pencil, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is your best option. It's also ideal for some pros who need a powerful workstation but shed as much weight as possible, like videographers and photographers.

For Apple Pencil lovers who don't need that much power, consider the 2022 iPad Air with an 11-inch screen. It runs on Apple's M1 processor, but its performance isn't far behind the iPad Pro's M2 processor. Just note that while the 2022 iPad Air supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, it doesn't support the new Hover feature, which is an M2 processor exclusive.

But the iPad Pro is no laptop replacement because iPad OS is limited in this area, even if you add a keyboard case and trackpad or mouse. If you need a thin and light workstation that offers a true computing experience, buy the M2 MacBook Air or 14-inch MacBook Pro.

As for casual video streamers who use basic apps, the iPad Pro will give you a few extra years of smooth and fast performance than the entry-level 10th-generation iPad — how many years exactly is hard to tell. And the ProMotion display sure is nice to have.

However, the 11-inch iPad Pro costs twice as much as the 10th-generation iPad; it is also $200 more than the iPad Air. I'd recommend either of those two models for more casual users before recommending the iPad Pro.

New iPad Pro with M2 – everything you need to know

Karen Haslam

A new iPad Pro has launched for 2022.

Apple last updated the iPad Pro line in April 2021, bringing the M1 processor to the platform for the first time and Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED technology to the 12.9-inch model. Now we have an M2 iPad Pro that supports ProRes video recording, but not much else has changed.

Apple also announced a new standard iPad for 2022, read about that here: New iPad 2022: Everything you need to know .

iPad Pro release date: When will the next iPad Pro arrive?

Apple’s 2022 iPad Pro is available to preorder now and will be in stores from Wednesday, October 26.

To order a new iPad Pro from Apple visit the Apple Store .

iPad Pro price: How much does the new iPad Pro cost?

Pricing for the new iPad Pro models is as follows:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch Wi-Fi (2022): from $799/£899 (was £749)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch Cellular (2022): from $999/£1,079 (was £899)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch Wi-Fi (2022): from $1,099/£1,249 (was £999)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch Cellular (2022): from $1,299/£1,429 (was £1,149)

Very bad luck if you are in the U.K. We imagine other places outside of the U.S. will have seen similar price increases, U.S. shoppers will see no price difference compared to the previous generation.

Here’s what the price was prior to this update:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2021): from $799/£749
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021): from $1,099/£999
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2020): from $799/£769
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2020): from $999/£969

As you can see, in previous years you’d have seen similar prices for U.K. and U.S., e.g. $999/£999, or even a lower price point for the U.K., but those days seem to be long gone as we saw with the iPhone 14 .

2022 iPad Pro Design

The iPad Pro had quite a significant redesign in 2018 when it was the first iPad to gain Face ID and a full-screen thanks to smaller bezels and the removal of the Home button. This time round there are no significant design changes and the dimensions and weight is exactly the same as before.

The color options are still just Space Gray or Silver. For more colors you need to look to the 2022 iPad, the iPad Air or iPad mini.

As spotted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, there is a tiny change on the back of the iPad Pro:

The iPad Pro now says iPad Pro on the back pic.twitter.com/D7TjMH5SBb — Mark Gurman (@markgurman) October 18, 2022

iPad Pro 2022: Specs

The 2022 iPad Pro features an M2 chip, as seen in the MacBook Air and 13in MacBook Pro.

M2 processor

Apple always likes to bestow the best of its processor line-up into its pro tablets, which is one of the reasons they are so ridiculously powerful. The iPad Pro was the first iPad to get an M1 chip. However, not long after the iPad Air made the same move. Now Apple needs a new processor for the iPad Pro to set it apart from the iPad Air.

With the arrival of the M2 processor for the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro , it was inevitable that the new chip would make an appearance in the iPad Pro and it has.

The M2 offers a 8-core CPU (which Apple says is up to 15 percent faster than M1) and a 10-core GPU (for 35 percent faster graphics performance, according to Apple). There is 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth in the M2, which is 50 percent more than M1. All this adds up to a much faster iPad Pro.

The M2 also powers new features such as the Apple Pencil hover experience (more on that below), ProRes video capture, and faster wireless connectivity.

Liquid Retina XDR display

Unfortunately this high-res display (2732-by-2048 resolution at 264 ppi and 1000 nits max full screen, 1600 nits peak) is still only available on the iPad Pro 12.9-inch model. There had been some hope that the technology would make it to the 11-inch model. It looks like that feature won’t make it to the smaller pro iPad until 2023. The 11in model still maxes out at 600 nits max, so it’s not such a great choice for outside work.

Both iPad Pro models offer the ProMotion display that was introduced with the 2021 iPad Pro.

There is no obvious change to the cameres but the 2022 iPad Pro models support smart HDR 4 for photos, while in 2021 only Smart HDR 3 for photos was available.

The 2022 iPad Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E which should allow for downloads that are are up to 2.4Gb/s and 2x faster than previously. Previously the speeds were up to 1.2Gbps.

The Wi-Fi + Cellular offer improved 5G support in the sub-6GHz and mmWave4 which should make a difference to users around the world.

Note that the 2021 models supported GSM/EDGE but the new models don’t.

iPad Pro 2022: Features

There are a number of new features coming with the M2 iPad Pro including ProRes video support

Thanks to the M2 and the improved cameras, the 2022 iPad Pro will be able to support capture and transcoding of ProRes video at up to 3x faster. The older iPad Pro models were not able to film ProRes footage.

ProRes video can be recorded at up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB capacity).

Apple suggests that the ProRes encode and decode engine should make the iPad Pro suitable for content creators to use for capturing, editing and publishing cinema-grade video while out in the field.

The breakthrough performance of M2 enhances an incredible selection of pro apps available on iPad, including DaVinci Resolve (below), Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Publisher 2 iPad, Octane X, uMake, and more.

Davinci Resolve iPad Pro

Apple Pencil Hover Experience

Hover is a new feature that works with Apple Pencil (2nd generation). The Apple Pencil can be detected when it is 12mm above the display – and users can see a preview of the mark they are about to make before they make it. Third party apps will be able to take advantage of the feature. Apple Pencil Hover only works with the 2022 iPad Pro models.

What wasn’t announced…

These un announced features could be coming to an iPad Pro in 2023.

Gurman and others have indicated that the new iPad Pro will have a glass back rather than aluminum for the first time. However, there are also suggestions that Apple has dropped plans for a glass back because it would be too fragile. More recent rumors say that only the Apple logo will be made of glass but still support wireless charging.

Wireless charging and MagSafe

Various news outlets, including Mark Gurman at Bloomberg , are reporting that the new iPad Pros will feature glass backs rather than the current aluminium ones. This is to allow the introduction of wireless charging and MagSafe for the first time on the iPad range. There have been other reports though that suggest the glass backs have proved problematic, as they make the iPads more prone to breakages and may also add to the weight. Apple is said to be considering just making the Apple logo glass, which may address some of these issues.

While it’s long been rumored that Apple would like to do away with all ports on its devices, we can’t see this being the time when it happens, as Pro users like to have the option to plug accessories into their devices to expand their capabilities.

Reverse wireless charging

The introduction of wireless charging could also usher in another feature that’s been popular on Android devices for a while: reverse wireless charging. This rumor is much more tentative, but we could see Apple allowing the back of the new iPad Pros to act as a wireless charging pad for devices like the iPhone 14 or AirPods Pro .

Apple has recently introduced some new shades to the Mac line up that could be shared with the iPad Pro. For example, Basic Apple Guy shared a concept design of the iPad Pro in Midnight:

A M2-based iPad Pro in Midnight. 🌑 pic.twitter.com/R56bS6AUDZ — Basic Apple Guy (@BasicAppleGuy) July 25, 2022

It’s also possible that Apple expands the color line like it did with the iPad mini and iPad Air with Starlight and the iPhone 14’s new Deep Purple color, especially if it switches to glass like the iPhone.

iPad Pro 2024: What is Apple working on for future models?

While this update will likely be a smaller refresh, Apple has bigger things planned for future iPad Pro models.

Liquid Retina XDR for 11-inch iPad Pro

There were early rumors that Apple would equip the new 11-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display like its larger sibling. However, this may not happen in 2022: analyst Ross Young tweeted that Apple’s mini-LED products probably won’t launch in 2022, which suggests that the 11-inch iPad Pro won’t be getting a miniLED display until 2023 or 2024.

Panel production has started for the new 27" MiniLED display to launch mid year. Assuming it will be called Studio Display Pro…I have insight on the 12.9" MiniLED iPad Pro as well. It is doing really well. They don't need to do one at 11". Don't expect it this year. — Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) March 10, 2022

Kuo followed this up with a clarifier , “More precisely, there may be no new products with the new mini-LED display size in 2022.” So, it looks like the 11-inch iPad Pro will go another generation before the transition to Mini-LED.

A notch in the display

Another rumour posted by 9to5Mac states that Apple has been experimenting with a new design for the iPad Pro that would see the infamous notch come to the platform for the first time. We’ve seen other reports that say Apple is thinking of positioning the cameras on the longer side of the chassis, essentially making them landscape orientated devices. With that move, the notch could become a reality, much as it did with the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. While those devices get away with it thanks to the menu bar along the top of the screen, it would seem more intrusive on the iPad Pro. With the introduction of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 , it’s possible that Apple introduces something similar on the iPad Pro.

The notch on the MacBook Pro could be the same as the one rumoured for the iPad Pro

Touch ID under display

Fans of Touch ID may be hoping that the technology will make a return to the iPad Pro. Apple is said to have been working on under screen Touch ID for some time but hasn’t introduced the tech in any device. Unfortunately it doesn’t sound like this will make an appearance on the iPad Pro yet—but it may well arrive on the iPad before it arrives on the iPhone.

Display analyst Ross Young shared in the MacRumors Show in July 2022 that he expects under-display Face ID to first arrive on the iPad. However, it won’t be this year: Young suggests that a future iPad Pro would be the first candidate for the technology.

Lighter, OLED, dry etched display

The 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro currently weigh in at 466 grams and 682 grams. If Apple switches from aluminium to glass on the back it could actually increase the weight of the iPad Pro. However, the company is said to be investigating a technology that could mean the iPad Pro can be lighter. According to ET News , Apple is looking into adopting “dry etching,” which is a process that can lead to thinner and lighter displays. This technique, coupled with an OLED screen, is more likely to arrive in the next iPad Pro update in 2023 or 2024.

Giant 14- or 15-inch screen

There is a rumor that Apple will increase the maximum screen size of its iPad range from 12.9-inch to 15-inch. The iPad Pro screen size has been capped at 12.9in since the first iPad Pro launched in 2015.

Sources in the supply chain have indicated that an Apple supplier (BOE) is working on gigantic 15-inch OLED panels that could plausibly end up in an iPad at some point in the future. What’s more, the respected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claimed in June 2021 that Apple itself has been testing 14-inch-16-inch iPads , and that devices in such a form factor will “continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop”. At the time Gurman wrote: “The 12.9in display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16in MacBook Pro”.

More recently, in July 2022, DSSC analyst Ross Young has claimed that a 14.1-inch iPad Pro is in development at Apple that could launch in early as 2023.

Confirmed the 14.1" iPad Pro is being developed with our supply chain sources. It will have MiniLEDs and ProMotion. Not sure of the timing, but early 2023 may be more likely. — Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) June 9, 2022

The problem is primarily one of timing. When the report was published in January 2022 BOE was said to still at an early stage of development, and the project is unlikely to yield actual commercial products for another year or two – and may never do so at all, sources say, “due to the difficulty of the technology”.

As for Apple’s own testing, that may be more promising, but bear in mind that the company routinely tests a wide variety of screen sizes for all of its products, just to see if a tweak would help. That doesn’t mean it’s actually going to happen.

We love the idea of a giant iPad Pro just as much as Mark Gurman does. But considering how expensive the 12.9-inch model already is, and how much more commercially successful the company’s cheaper and small alternatives are, it seems like a long shot for a 14- or 15-inch iPad Pro to appear in the near future.

Apple iPad Pro (6th Gen, 2022) review

The boss of high-end tablets is still a force to be reckoned with, and a serious option for creatives on the move..

Digital Camera World Verdict

Even though the 12.9-inch iPad Pro came out in October 2022, it still looms large over the high-end tablet sector today, offering M2-power and speed, great features and apps for digital creatives, and a display that is a joy to behold. But even when paired with the excellent Magic Keyboard, it can't really replace a laptop as it still can't run full-fat Photoshop. So with it's eye-watering price tag, is the iPad Pro (2022) still worth it? For many, but not for all.

At the time of writing, the 6th generation iPad Pro (2022) is the best iPad that Apple has ever released, with the largest 12.9-inch model boasting a spec sheet that should make the competition blush: A wicked-fast M2 chip; up to 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD ; Apple Pencil 2 compatibility; a Thunderbolt port; and a beautiful Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display. This is a serious tablet with loads of power, a great design, and enough features for us to crown it as the best tablet for photo editing and photographers . So what's not to like?

With the next generation of iPad Pro rumored for an early 2024 release (potentially sporting an OLED display and M3 chip), is the 2022 iPad Pro still a good buy, or are its days of tab dominance numbered? Let's get into it...

The iPad Pro 2022 on a bed, attached to the Magic Keyboard.

Though the two iPad Pro models share many features, one big difference is that the larger model sports a mini-LED, Liquid Retina XDR display with 2732x2048 resolution – and that's the one I'm testing in this review. The iPad Pro's ProMotion tech offers the fastest refresh rates of all the iPads, doubling up to 120Hz. What does that mean? Well, when I tested this tablet – soon after testing the entry-level iPad 10th Gen ) – I had a buttery-smooth scrolling experience, with both gaming and streaming as silky as I've experienced on a tablet. It may not be a deal-breaker for you, and you may not even notice the difference if you don't have another tablet to compare it to, but if you do, it sure is a pleasurable experience.

This display is also crisp and bright. Really bright. It will reach 600 nits brightness full screen with SDR content, and hit up to 1,000 nits full screen with XDR content, with up to 1,600 nits for highlights. What does this mean in practice? It means that the image will pop in a darker work room, and will try to compete with the sun outdoors. Drawing and web surfing outside on a fairly well-lit February midday, I found the iPad Pro more than up to the task of giving me a crisp, bright image at all times. Perhaps testing in the middle of summer, under direct sunlight, would offer different results, but in my testing, I was impressed with the brightness and clarity of the image on this tablet.

The iPad Pro being used as a drawing tablet outside.

And this brightness, as well as its mini-LED screen, is why I'm not too worried about the rumored release of the new iPad Pro (2024) making this 2022 model redundant. It's rumoured that the new tab will have an OLED display, but with the excellent blacks achieved with this tab's mini-LED technology, and its OLED-matching brightness – so what?! This display will still be a stunning feat of technology in a month, even a couple of years' time.

When you get the Apple Pencil out (the new USB version in my case), sketching and doodling are really fun on the iPad Pro (2022). The stylus is precise, and if other reviews are to be believed, the Apple Pencil 2 is even more so. Offering tilt and pressure sensors, making an array of marks is easy and intuitive with the USB Apple stylus on the iPad Pro. I also love how the Apple Pencil magnetically clips to the side of the tablet – a far more secure connection than with the iPad 10. However, it won't charge while attached like the Apple Pencil 2 will.

Although the iPad Pro (2022) could be used by photo and video editors, it's hard to imagine that any serious photographer would ever use the iPad Pro's cameras, other than for video calls and the odd cat capture! The iPad Pro is also way too expensive to be considered a 'family tablet', being passed around a family for casual browsing a snapping. Still, the two cameras on the 2022 model are still worth scrutinizing a bit.

First off, both front and rear cameras can take pics in portrait mode, which makes sense as the front camera also unlocks face ID. Of course, some photography purists may despise that, but for amateurs, the faux depth of field hack could be a nice touch. The rear camera takes vibrant pics, with decent contrast and as much detail as you'd expect from an Apple 12MP camera. There's also a 10MP Ultra Wide camera, and a LiDAR sensor, meaning quick focus, something that I definitely noticed while taking snaps of my ever-so-shy cat outside.

The front selfie camera is also 12MP and also has Center Stage, so while you're on a video call, the camera will seem to track you if you move. In fact, it just cuts into the ultra-wide view that it has and so appears to be tracking you. In any case, it's a nice feature on a nice camera. But as with the iPad 10, I naturally just ended up using the iPad 2022 as a bigger screen to show photos that I took on other devices, not photos that I took with the iPad.

The iPad Pro 2022 on a desktop, next to a monitor, keyboard and a MacBook Air.

In 2024, some are calling for a new design shake-up to the iPad Pro, as it's sported straight sides for several years now. I think if it's not broken, don't try and fix it, and love the straight edges of the Pro. And not just for aesthetic reasons. When taken away from the Magic Keyboard, I often had the iPad Pro propped up on my belly, or on a bit of duvet/sofa/random material. I noticed that with the straight edges, it was much more likely to stay fixed for longer compared to my (very old) curved-side iPad, which was more prone to slip down.

One massive detractor when talking about the design of the iPad Pro is the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. Not that I don't like them, but that I like them so much, and find that they complete the full iPad Pro experience to such a degree, that I genuinely feel annoyed for the customer who will have to spend even more money on getting them separately to the already-expensive tablet. Although I still don't think the iPad can really compare to a laptop for the same money, it's pretty close with the Magic Keyboard, and with the addition of the Apple stylus, it offers a really unique, enjoyable user experience. But you'll need to pay around $300 more for that experience. And add another $150 if you want the Apple Pencil 2 as well.

This review could so easily have been a full five stars, but seeing that the true potential of this tablet is only unlocked with two accessories that you have to buy on top of it, I don't see how I can give it full marks.

First the price. Right now, Apple is selling the entry-level iPad Pro 12.9-inch, which comes with the 128GB storage, for $1,099. If you want a bit more space, the 256GB SSD model will be $1,199 from Apple, but the best price that I've seen on this configuration is $1,049.99 on Amazon , during Black Friday last year.

That is, even at the record-low, a pretty beefy price tag. When you add the cost of a Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, we're talking closer to a grand and a half. So, is the full iPad Pro 2022 experience worth that much? You can certainly get an excellent laptop that will run full-fat digital software for that money. But we need to look at the iPad Pro's performance to fully answer that question.

Performance-wise, the iPad Pro 2022 is a bit of a beast. When I ran Geekbench 6 – a software that runs a series of timed processor tests – I got better results than I expected. Looking online, you'll find that the average single-core CPU benchmark for the iPad Pro 2022 is around 2,531 (the higher the number the better). My tablet scored 2,649. For context, this is the current best-scoring iPad on the market, beating the previous 12.9-inch Pro model that scored 2,260. It's also the best-scoring tablet on the market, beating Android competition Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 that achieved 'only' 1,946. The short version? This M2-chipped iPad is really powerful, and really quick at performing tasks.

What that means in day-to-day use is it glides through all minor tasks like browsing, streaming, and mobile games. And when you ask a little more of it, shooting and editing ProRes video with an app like FiLMiC Pro, for example, it performs excellently. When looking at digital art, the iPad Pro is an awesome tablet, but it's worth noting that you won't be able to run the full version of Adobe Photoshop on it. However, the Photoshop for iOS that it can run is still really impressive, and with the recent inclusion of the Generative Fill tool, plus Liquify and Drop Shadow, there is loads to do with this tablet in the photo manipulation and digital art sphere.

It's not all about Photoshop either, with many pro artists having moved to apps like Procreate on the iPad Pro years ago. This model of the iPad is just a little bit faster, and a little bit more powerful for all such art apps.

I really like the iPad Pro, but the truth is, I probably wouldn't buy it if I were in the market for a new tablet. That's because it's just way too powerful and feature-rich for what I need from a tablet. That may be an obvious thing to mention, but I know many people who have gone out and paid the grand-plus for the 2022 iPad Pro, only to basically do office work and movie-watching on it. If that's what you're planning to do, head over to my iPad 10th Gen review. That's the tablet for you.

If you're a pro, editing video, and photos, or simply have money to burn and want the best tablet experience for web surfing and movie watching, then at the time of writing, this is hands down the best option out there. Not just from Apple, but from any brand.

But money is the big issue with the 2022 Pro. If you are going to use it to its fullest, you'll want the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2, and that'll cost you around $400 more on an already sizeable price tag. However, with deals events, such as Amazon Prime Day and Black Friday occurring annually, and with the new 2024 iPad Pro set for release soon, you may be able to get a bundle at a more reasonable price.

iPad Air (M1, 2022)

If even the 11-inch Pro's price hurts your wallet, but you still want a capable iPad, the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/apple-ipad-air-2022-review" data-link-merchant="digitalcameraworld.com""> iPad Air (M1, 2022) is a great choice. It has the same Liquid Retina display as the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro, and the same camera as both Pros. And with a still-excellent M1 chip, a laminated screen, an anti-reflective coating, and an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, it will do the business for light creative work.

Want to go back to basics? The standard <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/apple-ipad-10th-gen-2023" data-link-merchant="digitalcameraworld.com""> iPad (10th gen) has the same camera as the iPad Air (above) but a less impressive A14 Bionic chip. It's still super-fast though, and will be more than enough for most people who just want to stream and play mobile games. Note that this iPad, like the Air, is available with 64GB or 256GB of storage.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) review: Maximum power in a pint-sized tablet

Read in other languages:

The iPad Pro (2022) that arrives in the 11-inch format is an impressive powerhouse. Apple's M2 SoC offers mind-blowing performance for a tablet, with the 11-inch display being extremely capable, while the entire build quality is top notch. But can the smaller Pro iPad prove itself as an everyday workhorse in reality? Here is our review of the iPad Pro 11" (2022).

  • Apple's M2 SoC delivers impressive performance
  • Ecosystem works great with iPadOS 16
  • Good camera image quality
  • Excellent workmanship
  • "Only" one LCD panel instead of an XDR display (12.9")
  • Webcam is still located on the left side
  • Moderate battery life under heavy use

The 2022 iPad Pro in a nutshell

The 2022 iPad Pro that arrives in the 11-inch version is an impressive piece of technology. Whether you use the iPad to edit 4K videos with DaVinci Resolve , generate AI images with StableDiffusion and other software , or simply "watch" Netflix and send emails: The diminutive tablet is an impressive performer and is a lot of fun to use due to its compact format. Of course, there are some drawbacks: The battery in the small case drains rather quickly when performing demanding tasks, while the display cannot keep up with the panel of its larger sibling, the iPad Pro 12.9" (2022). Not only that, do you think it is worth the $799 asking price?

  • NextPit compares: Which iPad is the right one for me?

You'll pay at least $799 for the 128 GB version, and the tablet costs $100 more if you want to double up the storage space. The 256 GB version does seem to be more suitable for everyday use. Things heat up with the 512 GB ($1,099) 1 TB ($1,499), or even 2 TB ($1,899) models. A 5G module means a $200 surcharge in each case. Just for comparison's sake, Apple has maintained the same price point compared to the previous generation. By the way, you can also read our review of its predecessor, the iPad Pro 11" (2021) here.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) design and build quality

The 2022 iPad Pro looks rather similar to its 2021 predecessor, and that is certainly high praise. Just like last year's model, the tablet is extremely well-constructed and looks really chic.

What I liked:

  • Great workmanship and excellent build materials
  • Very handy and light

What I disliked:

There is not much to write about the design of the iPad Pro. The tablet comes in the same style as with all current iPads, with thin bezels in front sans a physical home button. The case remains flat on the sides, with the edges comfortable to the touch. The build quality is great, you will not find anything creaking or cracking when pressure is applied.

If you hold the tablet in portrait mode, there is a USB-C port at the bottom. The power button (top side) and two separate volume buttons (right side) are located around the upper right corner. The back is completely matte apart from the Apple logo and the camera island.

Apple Pencil used with the iPad Pro 11" (2022)

Our review unit arrived in a shade of space gray and did not have any visible scratches after two months with one exception: The glossy coating of the Apple logo at the back is not only susceptible to fingerprints, but also to scratches. We discovered that it caught two clearly visible scratches.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) display

Apart from the form factor, the display is one of the major differences between the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro. While the larger version uses an "XDR display" with mini-LED backlight, the 11-inch model makes do with a "normal" LCD panel. However, that is by no means bad.

  • Great display with good color reproduction
  • Excellent brightness
  • No mini-LED display in the small iPad Pro
  • Worse black levels than 12.9-inch model

The iPad Pro 11" is more than just a tablet for viewing Netflix. The 11-inch LCD panel in the iPad is much too nice to look at for that. Thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate, animations look buttery smooth, and color reproduction is excellent. We did not have a beer garden with high summer at hand for the review, but the panel with a maximum brightness of 600 nits according to Apple can still be read even when you are under the southern Spanish winter sun, for instance.

Apple iPad Pro 11 2022 vs iPad Pro 12.9 2022 with M2 chip

However, the large iPad Pro is a step ahead during summer at best. The XDR display installed in the 12.9-inch model relies on a mini-LED backlight and thus achieves 1,000 nits in standard mode or 1,600 nits under direct sunlight. The mini-LED panel is also ahead in terms of black levels since it can be dimmed more. Black is only seen as dark gray in the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) software

The iPad Pro 11" will run on iPadOS 16 in 2023, which is a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor, iPadOS 15. Features like real multitasking and the Stage Manager are included, but it is less fun to use on the small display.

  • Unbeatable ecosystem across many product categories
  • No Apple Pencil is included
  • Expensive accessories

The iPad has grown up to become a real portable computer. That was the focus at Apple's presentation of iPadOS 16 last fall. The operating system made a leap forward especially in multitasking, although that is somewhat idle on the small iPad. I turned off the practical Stage Manager after a few days because I always dragged the apps to full screen mode on the small display by accident.

The iPad Pro 11 with the Apple Pencil

At the same time, the iPad also benefitted from the numerous features that the Apple ecosystem has to offer. With Universal Control , for example, you can use the iPad as an extra display for the MacBook or work with the Apple Studio Display (review) as with a full-fledged desktop computer.

And little things like the shared clipboard, which lets you seamlessly copy information back and forth between iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, are just great for everyday use. Apple's ecosystem is seamless to useox. For more information on iPadOS 16, check out the article below.

  • All new features of iPadOS 16 at a glance

Finally, Apple offers a whole bunch of accessories for the iPad Pro. This is especially stark with the Apple Pencil, but it is a shame that it was not included with the tablet, which costs at least $799. Instead, you have to pay another $129 for the second-generation stylus. You can find cheaper options in our article concerning the best Apple Pencil alternatives for the iPad.

Apple also charges a lot for the various available keyboards, such as the Smart Keyboard or Magic Keyboard, and they cost around $249 and $349, respectively. More accessories -and cheaper options from third-party manufacturers can be found in our article about the best iPad Pro accessories.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) performance

The iPad Pro has a really incredible amount of power underneath the hood, for which you will probably only find a few applications in the compact format.

  • Incredibly powerful
  • Low heat development
  • Very little thermal throttling

The iPad Pro (2022) occupies a fairly unique position in the tablet space with its Apple M2. The SoC runs competing Android tablets like Samsung's Galaxy Tab S8 series into the ground. In Geekbench 5 Multi-Core, for example, the iPad Pro and the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (review) scored 8,480 and 3,275 points, respectively. The Intel Core i5 in Microsoft's Surface Pro 9, for example, is easily beaten by the Apple M2 in the benchmarks.

iPad Pro M2 stress test

The iPad Pro achieves a stability rate of around 70 percent in Wild Life Extreme. That is slightly worse than the Qualcomm chips in the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (8 Gen 1) or the Xiaomi 13 Pro (8 Gen 2). However, the iPad is still faster than the unthrottled competition in absolute numbers even when performance is throttled.

In direct comparison with an older iPad Pro from 2021 or 2020, practically no performance differences are noticeable in everyday use. Just like its most recent predecessors, everything ran smoothly in everyday use. Differences only became noticeable in really demanding tasks like 4K video editing or in benchmark tests. The following table compares the differences in Geekbench 5 across different iPad Pro generations.

iPad Pro: Geekbench 5 comparison of different generations

What else is there? With WLAN 6E (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax), support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as well as dual-band, you will be able to achieve speeds of up to 2.4 Gbit/s in a network. The latest Bluetooth 5.3 standard is also on board, which allows multipoint Bluetooth connectivity and more. The iPad Pro (2022) really leaves nothing to be desired in terms of performance.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) camera

Even though the 11-inch iPad is rather compact, it is not fun to take pictures with it. The rear camera is sufficient as a "document scanner" and the selfie camera is perfectly fine for your everyday video calls. At least that applies to the quality, because its position at the side is simply annoying in landscape mode.

  • Good picture quality during the day
  • Webcam is still positioned awkwardly
  • No night mode for photos

What do you mostly use the camera in your tablet for? The answer to this question plays an important role in how you should interpret this section. The 11-inch iPad Pro when held in portrait mode has an ultra-wide angle camera above the display. The selfie camera delivers usable quality during the day, and videos in maximum Full HD resolution are also pleasing to look at. Nevertheless: the (I presume here) iPhone in your pocket will take better pictures and is much handier.

iPad Pro 11-inch sample photos

However, the position becomes impractical to use in landscape mode, which is mostly used for video calls. Instead of looking at the person you are talking to, you always feel like you are looking past them. Center Stage doesn't help, either. The follow mode always automatically crops the picture so that you can be seen in the center. Although this works reasonably well, it can sometimes seem a bit hectic. This is especially true if you move too much in front of the camera, your colleagues will get dizzy at some point.

iPad Pro 11 sample photos

Apple installed a dual camera at the tablet's back. The main camera offers 12 megapixels of resolution, while ultra-wide angle photos are shot in 10 megapixels. The photos are already decent under good lighting conditions, but it quickly becomes clear that the device is simply not made for taking photos in the dark. The tablet is not only too bulky, but the results are also noisy and pixelated. The fact that Apple has omitted the night mode does not necessarily help.

iPad Pro 11" sample photos

The LiDAR scanner at the back also falls under the camera department. This is handy for AR applications for instance, or if you want to scan objects as 3D models. Finally, the 11-inch iPad Pro also has Face ID on board, which reliably unlocks your tablet.

Apple iPad Pro 11" (2022) battery

After talking about high-end hardware that is underneath the hood, the question naturally remains: What about the battery? The answer? It depends. The iPad Pro that arrives in an 11-inch format does very well in light use with e-mail, videos, and the like. However, if you push the M2 chip to its limits, the 7,538 mAh battery is quickly drained.

  • Good battery life for light, everyday use
  • Power adapter is included in the box
  • Short battery life when performing demanding tasks
  • Slow charging speed

Admittedly, I had a hard time evaluating the battery life. On the one hand, the runtime in everyday use is really not bad in view of the compact format. For example, when watching a TV series via WLAN (Apple TV+), the 2022 iPad Pro with 11 inches needs almost four hours of use to see the battery life drop to 50 percent at maximum display brightness. The manufacturer's claim of ten hours of surfing or video watching is thus realistic at moderate display brightness.

The situation is different for demanding tasks like 4K video editing with Davinci Resolve. If I were to generate pictures in an endless loop via a stable diffusion model, it takes just two hours until the 7,538 mAh battery in the small iPad Pro drops from 100 to 25 percent. Just be aware that you won't be able to edit videos continuously on the next intercontinental flight if you don't have a power outlet within reach there.

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve

On top of that, Apple charges their device at notoriously slow speeds, and the 2022 iPad Pro is no exception. It takes 30 minutes until the battery is charged to 23 percent. After one hour of charging, you hit 48 percent. A complete charge from zero to one hundred takes an impressive 140 minutes with the included power adapter.

Final verdict

What is there to say about the iPad Pro 11" 2022 in conclusion? You will not be able to find a much more compact and versatile workhorse simultaneously, neither from Apple itself nor among the Samsung tablets (comparison) , for example. However, you should also consider whether you really need this all this power. Apart from the new M2 chip, there are few reasons to really buy the 2022 model. The 11-inch iPad Pro from 2021 is currently going cheaper if you are curious about picking up a tablet.

If the small iPad Pro fits into your budget, you will definitely be happy with the small tablet. The build and design are top, and even the "weaker" Pro display is fun in everyday use. The performance is spectacular, and battery life is also very good in everyday use, assuming your daily routine does not consist of 4K video editing and the like.

iPad Pro 2022: Everything we know so far

How will the iPad Pro 2022 build upon the success of the previous iPad Pro?

iPad Pro 2021 (12.9-inch)

The iPad Pro 2022 will need to bring something new to the table if it's going to successfully supplant the iPad Pro 2021 as the best tablet on the market while convincing customers to skip the iPad Air and spend more.

The 12.9-inch mini-LED Retina XDR display is one of the most notable advantages the current iPad Pro enjoys over its more affordable sibling, but early rumors suggest Apple has some surprises coming in 2022 that could make everyday consumers think twice about saving for the Air. Those could include increasing the screen size of both models as well as bringing mini-LED to the smaller model.

  • Best tablet deals and sales in 2022

After scouring all of the rumors and leaks regarding the forthcoming iPad Pro 2022, here’s a look at everything we know so far, including the potential release date, price, specs, features and more.

iPad Pro 2022 price

Pricing has held firm for the iPad Pro over the past few years with only minor adjustments made to account for more expensive components. One of those price changes was made with the most recent model when Apple added $100 to the price of the iPad Pro 12.9-inch, bringing the total to $1,099 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model.

We doubt Apple would raise the price much higher, so expect the 12.9-inch version to cost somewhere between $1,100 and $2,100 depending on the configuration and wireless support.

The 11-inch iPad Pro, however, could receive a minor price hike, which it avoided in the 2021 version. The current model starts at $799; if the current crop of rumors about a mini-LED panel holds true, we could see the iPad Pro jump to an $899 starting price and go up from there as you add storage and 5G connectivity. Of course, these prices exclude the Magic Keyboard ($299, $349) and Apple Pencil ($129)

iPad Pro 2022 rumors

iPad Pro 2020 cameras

We're several months away from an iPad Pro 2022 release date. In all likelihood, the next iPad Pro will arrive in May 2022, at around the same time as the current model. This year, the iPad Pro was released in April before going on sale a month later.

The iPad Pro launch is a tricky one to predict because it doesn't adhere to a strict release schedule. That said, the past two models dropped in the spring, so we have reason to believe the next version will do the same. It's possible minor updates will be made to a refreshed version this holiday season, but we wouldn't bank on it.

The little guy got left out. When Apple revealed the latest iPad Pro, its presentation was all about the 12.9-inch. That's because the bigger sibling got the upgrade to a Retina XDR (aka mini-LED) display while the 11-inch model was stuck with a standard Retina LCD panel.

Fortunately, a July 2021 rumor suggests Apple will treat its children fairly this year by bringing mini-LED to the 11-inch iPad Pro . This rumor comes by way of a research note from reliable analyst Ming-chi Kuo.

As a reminder, mini-LED technology consists of 2,500 local dimming zones that can illuminate during bright scenes or turn off completely during dark ones. This creates limitless contrast and perfect blacks. The bad news is that it also creates a blooming effect where bright light leaks into dark areas; it wasn't much of a problem during our testing, and we'd take minor blooming over burn-in.

iPad Pro 2021 (12.9-inch)

Another downside of Apple's mini-LED implementation is that you need to be watching HDR content to get the best image quality. Otherwise, the Retina XDR display doesn't look much better than the standard Retina panel. That was quantified in our tests when the 12.9-inch iPad Pro reached 563 nits of brightness when showing non-HDR content and 1,582 nits when playing HDR video.

There is also some rumbling about Apple expanding the iPad Pro displays. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed in June that Apple was exploring iPads with larger displays. As exciting as that might sound, Gurman said it would take at least a "couple of years" to ship if Apple does decide on using larger panels.

iPad Pro 2022 specs

Apple shifted its flagship tablet to the M1 CPU, the custom chip originally developed for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air . So what about the 2022 model? If Apple pushes out an M2 chip for the MacBook, we could see the iPad Pro 2022 adopt that processor.

If not, the iPad Pro 2022 could use the same M1 as the current model. We wouldn't mind. The iPad Pro is already the most powerful tablet on the market, and by a significant margin. There are few apps or programs on the iPad Pro, and in iPadOS 15, that the tablet won't run smoothly.

M1 Chip

To give you an idea of how powerful the current model is, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro scored scored a 7,298 on the Geekbench 5.0 test, crushing the iPad Air (4,262, A14 Bionic), the previous iPad Pro (4,720, A12Z) as well as anything released by the competition including the Surface Pro 7+ (4,825, Core i5-1135G7).

The current iPad Pro has a single  USB-C  charging port on the bottom edge with Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 support. We could see Apple upgrade to a Thunderbolt 4 input next year.

And while we're on the subject of charging, the iPad Pro 2022 could come with a new reverse wireless charging technology. According to insiders speaking to Bloomberg, the tech giant's upcoming tablet is set to feature a glass back instead of the current iPad Pro's aluminum frame. This will enable wireless charging, similar to how Apple's MagSafe charger works with its latest  iPhone 12 .

We also expect the return of 5G though no changes are likely considering the current models already support sub-6Ghz and mmWave 5G bands. That means you get either the widest or fastest 5G speeds depending on your carrier and location.

iPad Pro 2022 outlook

Logitech Combo Touch for iPad Air (2020)

We are several months away from Apple revealing its next batch of iPad Pro models and rumors are already trickling into our newsfeeds. So far, expected upgrades include a mini-LED display on the 11-inch model to match the 12.9-inch version as well as MagSafe wireless charging. It's safe to assume that, if there is a new M-series processor, it will be adopted by the upcoming iPad Pro models.

We'll keep a close eye on rumors and leaks regarding the iPad Pro models, which are set to arrive next year. In the meantime, see our 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro hubs for the latest info on Apple's upcoming laptops — who knows, maybe you spend your hard-warned cash on a laptop and skip the premium tablet altogether.

The best iPads you can buy: Expert tested

Why you can trust ZDNET

ZDNET's reviewers and editors have been testing and using tablets for years. When we test a new iPad, we spend at least two weeks (and often several months) using the device in our everyday lives -- doing everything from working to browsing to video editing to streaming shows to gaming. We seek to get a feel for how you'd actually use the device day to day, and any pros and cons related to performance, display, battery life, cameras, and other features.

What to Consider

Form factor

Ultimately, Apple only has four iPad models, so there is little selection. However, each iPad is different enough by design to suit different needs.

Compatibility

Even though each iPad is an Apple product, we considered which iPads are compatible with accessories such as the second-generation Apple Pencil and which have the latest OS.

The different iPad models will vary in cost since they focus on different things. For example, the iPad Mini's focus is portability, so it is small and costs less, while the iPad Pro is a powerhouse meant to replace a laptop, so you'll see a higher price tag.

iPad Air blue from the back

The iPad remains the gold-standard for tablets because of its wide array of quality apps and content, as well as its integration with other products within the Apple ecosystem. While this is a bit of an odd time to buy a new iPad since we're expecting new models to arrive in early May, if you're looking for a new or replacement iPad to consume content and do basic tasks, these are options available that will serve as a good device and last for years.

Also: The best iPad stylus

Whether you're selecting the best iPad for you, or you're buying one for a kid, a parent, or another friend or relative, there are now essentially five options to choose from -- two variations of the standard iPad , the iPad Mini , the iPad Air , and the iPad Pro  (in two sizes). They all do many of the same things, but we'll focus on their unique capabilities and who can most benefit from them to help you choose the best one.

Also:  The best iPad keyboards

What is the best iPad right now?

I've been using an iPad nearly every day since the product first launched in April 2010, and I've tried all the various models over the years and used them for many different things. My current pick for the best iPad for most people is the iPad Air , because it includes nearly all of the best features the iPad has to offer at a price that's more approachable than the iPad Pro. Below is my full breakdown of the current iPad lineup -- based on my hands-on experience and product testing -- as well as my buying recommendations for each model to help you pick the best one for various needs and budgets.

The best iPads of 2024

  • Has 80% of the Pro features
  • Five color options
  • Supports 2nd-gen Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard case
  • Has speedy M1 chip inside
  • 64GB storage in base model is not great
  • Battery life struggles to get a through full day if using like a laptop
  • Touch ID is less convenient than Face ID
  • Configured with accessories, it gets expensive quickly

iPad Air (5th generation)

Best ipad overall.

The iPad Air looks and feels a lot like the iPad Pro, especially if it's in the Magic Keyboard case and it has the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) magnetically attached. It's truly a slightly less expensive iPad Pro that's only missing a few features (primarily an upgraded processor, an even better display, and more powerful cameras for AR and pro video capture).

This is the iPad to get if you want to use your iPad nearly every day and do more than just read and watch videos. You want to use it to answer emails, write up documents, take notes, draw a little bit, and maybe play games, for example. The iPad Air is much more powerful device than the base-level iPad, and it's meant for doing more. That's why it has a nicer display and cameras (back and front) than the standard 9th- and 10th-gen iPad models.

Review:  iPad Air (2022): So good I almost regret buying my iPad Pro

My biggest complaint with the iPad Air is that if you're stepping up to this model, then you'll want to get the most out of it and include the add-ons to it -- upgrade from the base 64GB of storage to 256GB, include the cellular connectivity option, and add the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and the Magic Keyboard. By the time you do all that, it's going to cost you $1,300. That's only $200 less than a similarly configured 11-inch iPad Pro. It's also about the same price as an M2 MacBook Air .

Overall, 98% customers who have purchased the iPad Air at Best Buy said they would recommend this model, and gave it an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars.

iPad Air  (5th generation)  specs: Display : 10.9-inch Retina display |  Processor : Apple Silicon M1 |  Storage : 64GB or 256GB |  Biometrics : Touch ID |  Colors : Space gray, starlight, pink, purple, blue |  Cameras : 12MP rear, 4K video. 12MP Ultra Wide camera |  Weight : 1.02 pounds |  Dimensions : 9.74 x 7.02 x 0.24 inches |  Connections : USB-C port |  Battery life:  10 hours

  • Centered camera for landscape video calls
  • Four color options
  • USB-C charging
  • Similar design to iPad Air and iPad Pro
  • Nearly as expensive as iPad Air
  • Doesn't support 2nd-gen Apple Pencil

iPad (10th generation)

Best ipad for facetime and zoom.

When Apple upgraded its 10th generation base-level iPad with a new design to match the iPad Pro and iPad Air, it added a surprising number of features that had been limited to the high-end models, including USB-C, 5G, 4K video capture, and Wi-Fi 6.

Review:  iPad 2022 (10th Gen): Better than the Pro in two ways

But Apple also gave the 10th-gen iPad something no other iPad has: a front-facing camera that is centered horizontally and optimized for video calls when the iPad is docking in its keyboard case -- which has now become the preferred position for many iPad users. This unequivocally makes the iPad 10th-gen the best iPad for FaceTime calls, Zoom meetings, and other types of video calls. And, based on customer reviews, this iPad would be a good option for those new to Apple as well as those looking for something easy to use for kids or seniors.

The biggest drawback to this model is the price. Starting at $450, it's $130 more expensive than the iPad 9th generation, which Apple still sells and remains the best budget iPad.

iPad ( 10th generation)  specs: Display : 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with True Tone |  Processor : A14 Bionic chip with 16-core Neural Engine |  Storage : 64GB or 256GB |  Biometrics : Touch ID |  Colors : Silver, Pink, Blue, Yellow |  Cameras : 12MP f/1.8 wide, 12MP Landscape f/2.4 front |  Weight : 1.05 pounds |  Dimensions : 9.79 x 7.07 x .28 inches |  Connections : USB-C, Smart Connector |  Battery life:  Up to 10 hours of video playback with USB-C charging

  • Great price
  • Solid display
  • Traditional Touch ID home button
  • Supports Apple Pencil (1st generation)
  • Filled with last-generation tech
  • Very large bezels
  • Uses Lightning port for charging

iPad (9th generation)

Best budget ipad.

If you just need a basic, full-screen iPad to watch videos, play games, answer messages, and do an occasional video call, for example, then the base-level iPad (9th generation) will suit plenty of people just fine. And it starts at $329, which makes it very accessible. It's a great first iPad for kids. It's also a good one to give elderly relatives and friends who are still a little uncomfortable with technology and just need a device to do a few simple things.

The 9th-gen iPad is filled with last-generation technology such as the Lightning connector for charging, a Touch ID home button, 4G LTE connectivity, the A13 chip, and the 1st-gen Apple Pencil. But it does have a 12MP front-facing camera and so it's still a good video call device. And overall, these older technologies are still good enough to handle the basics for most people -- and will be for several years to come.

Review:   Apple iPad (2021) review: If it's not broke, don't fix it

And the customer reviews speak for themselves: 98% of customers who have purchased this generation iPad at Best Buy would recommend it to a friend, and gave it a rating of 4.9 stars out of 5.

iPad (9th generation) t ech specs: Display : 10.2-inch Retina display |  Processor : A13 Bionic |  Storage : 64GB or 256GB |  Biometrics : Touch ID |  Colors : Silver, space gray |  Cameras : 8MP rear, 1080p video, 12MP FaceTime camera with Center Stage |  Weight : 1.07 pounds |  Dimensions : 9.8 x 6.8 x 0.29 inches |  Connections : 3.5mm headphone jack, Lightning port |  Battery life:  10 hours

  • Gorgeous display with Retina XDR and ProMotion
  • Has M2, most powerful chip in an iPad
  • Wi-Fi 6E for faster connectivity
  • Advanced camera system for AR and pro video capture
  • Costs as much as a powerful laptop
  • Camera placement is awkward for video calls
  • Heavy when combined with Magic Keyboard

iPad Pro (6th generation)

Best ipad money can buy.

The iPad Pro is the ultimate iPad, where Apple has pushed the boundaries of what's possible for a tablet and even tempted people to make this their only computing device. Customers who have bought it praise this processor upgrade, saying it makes the iPad Pro "future-proof" and worth the cost in the long run. But I would argue that most people shouldn't buy the iPad Pro thinking it's a replacement for your laptop, because many of you would be disappointed and frustrated.

Instead, you should buy the iPad Pro for the things it does well that you can't do with a laptop. The three big ones are:

  • Built-in 5G for simplified, always-on connectivity
  • Digital drawing capabilities with the Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
  • Advanced camera system for capturing augmented reality and ProRes video

The always-on 5G is its best feature because it always beats having to use your phone as a hotspot -- or worse, public Wi-Fi from your laptop. Being able fire up the iPad Pro with its excellent keyboard, beautiful screen, and faster processor and power through messages and documents from anywhere is truly a treat. And for professionals who want the flexibility of drawing with a digital device or working with AR for viewing and capturing high-quality video without a heavy, bulky rig, the iPad Pro is a purpose-built device that works great.

Review:  iPad Pro (2022): I'm cautiously optimistic. Or foolish

Where the iPad Pro falls down is when you want to start multitasking and doing more complicated tasks that you'd normally do on your laptop. There almost always ends up being a task that's more frustrating or takes extra steps or simply doesn't have all of the functionality you get when you perform the task from a Mac or a Windows PC. And for now, I'd also recommend waiting until Apple announces the next iPad Pro in the spring before making an investment this big -- unless you have an urgent need and won't have FOMO about the latest new features.

iPad Mini (6th generation)

Best ipad for specific use cases.

The design of the iPad Mini (6th generation) makes it look a lot like a smaller iPad Air, and the technology inside the product is very consistent with that impression. The 8.3-inch tablet is nearly identical in specs to the 10.9-inch iPad Air. It's essentially the smaller sibling, but it's only $100 less expensive, starting at $499.

The iPad Mini feels more like a big smartphone than a small tablet at times. It can easily slip into bags, purses, and even the pockets of some cargo pants and vests. Compared to a phone, it's better for reading ebooks, PDFs, documents, news apps, and other digital content -- especially when leaning back in a chair or a couch. But it's not quite as nice as reading on a full-size iPad propped up horizontally in a case when reading at a desk or table. The portability of the iPad Mini along with its support for the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil make note-taking a popular use case -- although I consider the a better note-taking tablet, if that's the primary function you're looking for.

Review:  Why the iPad Mini 6 is Apple's most exciting new product in years

The main audience for the iPad Mini might be businesses with specific use cases such as retail customer service, point-of-sale, and logistics apps such as delivery. It's also good to give to young kids as a first iPad since it's smaller, lighter, and easier to handle. And there are rugged cases for it -- which is critical for both little kids and many business use cases.

Customers who bought the iPad Mini reported in reviews that they were impressed by its battery life, durability, and its display, also noting its portability to fit in purses and bags, particularly for entertainment purposes.

iPad Mini  (6th generation)  specs: Display : 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display |  Processor : A15 Bionic |  Storage : 64GB or 256GB |  Biometrics : Touch ID |  Colors : Space gray, pink, purple, starlight |  Cameras : 8MP rear, 1080p video. 12MP FaceTime camera with Center Stage |  Weight : 0.65 pounds |  Dimensions : 7.69 x 5.3 x 0.25 inches |  Connections : USB-C |  Battery life:  10 hours

What is the best iPad?

The best iPad overall is the iPad Air since it has many of the high-end features of the iPad Pro but isn't quite as expensive. However, if you're going to add all of the accessories like the Apple Pencil, the Magic Keyboard, cellular connectivity, and extra storage then you're still going to spend over $1,000 with the iPad Air and will only save a couple hundred dollars off the price of the iPad Pro. In that case, you should strongly consider opting for the iPad Pro.

*MSRP at the time of writing. Please note that actual prices may vary depending on available sales, deals, discounts, and coupons.

Which is the best iPad for you?

Whether you're buying a new iPad or upgrading an old iPad, the first thing to do before you buy is to get really clear about what you're planning to use it for the most.

Factors to consider when choosing the best iPad:

If you're looking to buy an iPad, here are the top factors you should consider before making a purchase:

  • Mobility:  The iPad lineup now ranges from the very small and light iPad Mini to the iPad Pro 13-inch, which can be heavier and more bulky than a laptop (once you attach the Magic Keyboard Case or another third-party case). In between these two you have the rest of the iPad lineup that comes in slight variations of the traditional 10-inch iPad form factor. Think about how much you want to use the iPad on the go and the bag you want to carry it in. Will you be carrying just the iPad or will you also be carrying a laptop?
  • Accessories:  Think about which iPads are compatible with the accessories you'd like to use such as the Magic Keyboard Case and the three different versions of the Apple Pencil.
  • Price:  There are now iPads for nearly every budget, especially when you include the last-generation models we've highlighted below in the Alternatives section. You can get a standard iPad for around $300 and it will be fine for watching videos, doing light web surfing, and answering messages. This is a great choice for a first iPad or to upgrade an older one used for the same tasks. The premium iPad Pro models are loaded with features, have incredible displays, and cost the same as a premium laptop. However, they are best for creative professionals, artists, and those who want to use the device as their full laptop replacement, which can still be a frustrating endeavor if you're a power user with a long history on a laptop and you have a lot of work to do.

How do we test iPads?

I have been using an iPad since the day the first Apple tablet was released in 2010, and I have tried out nearly every iPad model at one point or another since then. I've tested the modern iPad models in real-world situations to evaluate their features, design, performance, and overall value.

For example, I've used the iPad Mini to take notes and read documents on the road. I've used the standard iPad for web browsing and watching YouTube. I've used the iPad Pro models for lots of Zoom calls, Slack, web apps, creating Google Docs, reading during lunch using the Kindle app and the Magic Keyboard case since it props up the iPad quite nicely, and downloading and watching videos while traveling. I've recently tried using the iPad Air for all the things I typically do with an iPad Pro and found that it works great with only two exceptions: the battery life isn't as good and the fingerprint sensor isn't as convenient as Face ID for all day use during a long day of meetings or work.

What is the best iPad for kids?

The base model iPad is the best tablet for kids since it's easy to use, lightweight, and can grow with your child as they need it for different purposes. The iPad Mini would also be a good choice since it's the smallest iPad in the lineup, perfect for little hands.

What is the best iPad for drawing?

The best iPad for drawing is definitely the iPad Pro, thanks to its mini LED display that Apple calls Liquid Retina XDR, which is brighter and offers more color contrast when you're drawing. The Pro is also great for drawing since it supports the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil, with a magnetic spot on the side to charge it.

All that said, the iPad Air also supports the Apple Pencil and is solid drawing tablet as well -- just a step down from the Pro because of the screen quality.

What is the best iPad for students?

The best iPad for students is the 5th-generation iPad Air. It has many of the same features as the powerful iPad Pro but costs less for students' budgets.

Also:   The best note-taking apps for iPad

It's also compatible with the Magic Keyboard and the 2nd-generation Apple Pencil, so students can utilize it for different forms of note-taking.

Should I get the iPad Pro or the iPad Air?

Where the iPad Pro is the model for those who want the upgraded cameras, AR features, and the high-quality display, the iPad Air is the model for those who want to use the tablet for work and play, without big sacrifices in performance or features.

What are the differences between an iPad, Amazon Fire, and a Samsung tablet?

It's easy to see the price difference between one of Amazon's Fire tablets and an iPad. However, you have to remember that Amazon designs and builds its tablets as entry-level tablets that do the bare minimum.

Performance is going to be slower and app selection is going to be worse on Amazon's Fire tablet lineup. The iPad has access to the same App Store as the iPhone, with many apps optimized to take advantage of the larger display on the iPad.

As far as Samsung tablets go, these devices will run on Android and are closer to iPads in terms of performance, design, and features. The Galaxy Tab S series is ideal for users who need power, such as creators and professionals. The tablets in this series have larger screens and more processing power, comparable to the iPad Pro.

On the other hand, Samsung also makes a Galaxy Tab A series, which comes at a lower price point with smaller screens for those who need a simple tablet for everyday tasks and entertainment.

Are there alternative iPad models to consider?

If you still want an iPad but want to pay less and don't mind older versions, you can buy a renewed iPad through Amazon's Renewed Store , which sells high-quality, like-new products that are refurbished and pre-owned.

New iPad Pros and iPad Airs could land on March 26, but one model might be missing

The iPad Pro 2024 and iPad Air 6 might just be a week away

iPad Pro 12.9 (2022) on table

It has felt like a very long wait for new iPads, with the most recent ones having landed back in 2022. But that wait might almost be over, as two separate sources suggest that the iPad Pro 2024 and the iPad Air 6 might be announced on March 26.

Chinese leaker Instant Digital and Chinese website ITHome have both put this date forward, as spotted by MacRumors , though the latter mentions that cases for these tablets will apparently start being sold on that date, and seems to use this as evidence for March 26 being the launch date.

In any case, even if these tablets are announced on March 26, they might not ship until a while later, as according to Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter , these tablets will ship with iPadOS 17.4, and that probably won’t be finished until at least the end of March, after which it will need installing on these slates. So that might mean they don’t ship until the second half of April.

But that doesn’t rule out an announcement on March 26, with pre-orders perhaps opening soon after. Indeed, leaker Ross Young (via MacRumors ) has recently said that the iPad Pro 2024 will be announced in late March or early April, and will ship in April.

The iPad Pro 2024 in particular should be worth the wait too, with leaks suggesting it will be the first of Apple 's tablets to boast an OLED screen, along with a powerful M3 chipset, a landscape-oriented front camera, and maybe even wireless charging via MagSafe.

A missing model

However, the iPad Air 6 might be slightly more disappointing, as the main rumored change there was the addition of a larger 12.9-inch model, but according to leaker ShrimpApplePro , there will probably only be a 10.9-inch version, as we currently have.

That said, they’re basing this on the absence of activity surrounding a 12.9-inch model being assembled in Vietnam, and they note that it’s still possible this larger model is instead being manufactured in China. So while we wouldn’t rule it out just yet – especially as this larger variant has been extensively leaked – they don’t seem very convinced that it’s happening.

Beyond that, this source claims that the iPad Air 6 will have a landscape-oriented selfie camera but otherwise won’t be in for any major design changes. They also claim that of the five colors the iPad Air (2022) is available in (namely Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, Purple, and Blue), either Pink or Blue will probably not be offered with the new model – though presumably a new shade will take its place.

As ever, we’d take all of these leaks with a pinch of salt, but one way or another it’s sounding like we’ll probably see the iPad Pro 2024 and the iPad Air 6 fairly soon.

iPad Pro 2024 vs iPad Pro 2022: Biggest expected upgrades

The rumored iPad Pro 2024 could offer significant upgrades

iPad Pro 2022

Apple hasn’t officially announced the iPad Pro 2024 but rumors suggest the tablet could launch just before the company’s WWDC 2024 event. If true, it would replace the iPad Pro 2022 since Apple didn’t release any new iPad s in 2023. Given some of the rumors we’ve heard in recent months, the next iPad Pro will potentially offer a handful of welcome (and long-awaited) upgrades over its predecessors.

We won’t know for certain what has changed between the iPad Pro 2022 and the iPad Pro 2024 until the latter arrives, but we've been hearing about a brand-new OLED display, faster M3 chip and other upgrades. If what we’ve heard is true, the rumored tablet could find a spot on our best iPads and best tablets lists. Here’s a breakdown of all the rumored upgrades coming to the new iPad Pro.

OLED panel

iPad Pro 2022

Rumors have long suggested Apple would upgrade the iPad Pro with an OLED display . If this happens, it would be a significant improvement over the current mini-LED panel in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. According to Bloomberg reporter and Apple tipster Mark Gurman , the panel should be “crisper and brighter” and “reproduce colors more accurately.”

On the topic of displays, Gurman has also said the 12.9-inch iPad Pro could get bumped up to a 13-inch screen. However, the 11-inch model wouldn’t receive a size upgrade. That’s something display analyst Ross Young has also claimed . At least the smaller iPad Pro would still receive an OLED panel.

Since OLED screens are inherently thin, discussions have suggested that the iPad Pro will be lighter. Currently, the 11-inch iPad Pro can weigh a little over 1 pound while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro can weigh as much as 1.5 pounds. We can’t say how much lighter the rumored iPad Pros could be, but any weight loss would be welcome.

Landscape front camera

iPad Pro 2022

The iPad Pro 2024 could take a design cue from the iPad 10 in the form of a landscape-oriented camera on the front of the tablet. Apple leaker Instant Digital (via MacRumors ) posted on the Chinese social media platform Weibo posted an image of what the rumored iPad Pro could look like. If the image in question is legit, Apple plans to move the entire TrueDepth camera array to the right of the tablet. The microphone would remain on the top but newly centered.

We first heard about this rumored upgrade back in January 2024 after the iPadOS 17.4 beta code hinted that the iPad Pro’s Face ID sensors were being relocated from the top of the device when held in portrait, and to the top when held in landscape. "During ‌ Face ID ‌ setup, ‌iPad‌ needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen," the code read. Instant Digital claimed the rumored iPad Air 6 would also get a repositioned front camera.

iPads have historically had the front camera positioned on the short side of the display. However, tablet usage has evolved and now most folks tend to use slates in landscape mode instead of portrait. Other tablets, such as the best Android tablets , have shifted their cameras to reflect this. Given how the iPad 10 now has its front camera up top in portrait mode, it wouldn’t be surprising if the iPad Pro followed suit.

Apple M3 chip

iPad Pro 2022

Given how the iPad Pro 2022 has an Apple M2 chip , its successor is expected to pack an Apple M3 processor. If true, it would make the iPad Pro the most powerful iPad ever — and potentially leave all competing tablets in the proverbial dust performance-wise.

The M3 chip uses TSMC’s 3nm process, which brings big improvements in efficiency and speed — as we’ve seen in the MacBook Pro 14-inch M3 , MacBook Air 13-inch M3 and MacBook Air 15-inch M3 . If the iPad Pro M3 has the same performance gains we saw between M2 and M3 in MacBooks, then it might not be a radical advancement. However, if you’re using an M1 -powered iPad or older, then the performance boost should be significant.

I initially believed packing M-series chips into iPads was overkill since most people use the devices for web browsing, watching videos and light work. However, if you’re a video or photo editor who uses an iPad to make a living, then the performance gains M3 provides could greatly benefit you.

Magic Keyboard upgrade

iPad Pro 2022

If you use an iPad Pro for work, then you might own an Apple Magic Keyboard — which is one of the most useful peripherals for Apple’s large tablet. The Magic Keyboard hasn’t received a major update in a while, but if rumors are true, it’s about to receive a few.

According to Gurman, Apple is revamping the Magic Keyboard to make “the iPad Pro look even more like a laptop than the current setup.” In that same vein, the peripheral will also sport a “larger trackpad.” Gurman also says the Magic Keyboard could also receive an aluminum finish that would give it the aesthetic of Apple’s laptops. If true, this would be another step closer to realizing the dream of making the iPad Pro a laptop replacement — at least visually.

Lastly, rumors have suggested the iPad Pro 2024 would support the equally rumored Apple Pencil 3 . The Apple Pencil 2 is arguably the best stylus out there (at least in my humble opinion), so it would be interesting to see what improvements Apple could introduce. The Apple Pencil 3 could also work with the Vision Pro headset.

the wait continues —

Report: redesigned m3 ipad pros, large-screened ipad air now expected in may, next-gen ipads will be apple's first new tablets since late 2022..

Andrew Cunningham - Mar 29, 2024 5:30 pm UTC

The M2 iPad Pro. The updated version will come with refined designs and new accessories.

If you've been waiting for new iPads to come out, prepare to wait just a little longer: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that redesigned iPad Pros with Apple's M3 chip, plus refreshed iPad Air models with the M2 and a larger-screened option, should now arrive sometime in "early May." Gurman had previously reported that new iPads could arrive in March or April, not long after the updated M3 MacBook Airs.

Further Reading

Gurman suggests that "complex new manufacturing techniques" for the new iPad screens have "contributed to the delay," and that Apple is also "working to finish software for the devices."

The details of what the new iPads will look like hasn't changed. The new iPad Pro models will shift to using OLED display panels for the first time and will have their designs tweaked for the first time since the 2018 iPad Pros introduced the current rounded, slim-bezeled look. Those new iPad Pros will also come with redesigned Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories, though it's unclear whether those accessories will be totally rethought or if they'll just tweak existing designs to work with the new tablets.

The iPad Air refresh will be more straightforward. It should retain the current design, which is very similar to the 2018-era iPad Pro refresh but with a power button-mounted TouchID fingerprint sensor instead of a FaceID camera for authentication. But the new Airs will come with an M2 chip instead of the current M1, and a 12.9-inch variant will provide a less-expensive large-screened option for people who want to use their iPad as their primary computer but who don't want to pay for the extra bells and whistles of the Pro.

Some rumors have suggested the iPad Pro could come with a price hike relative to the current-generation model, though the sources of those rumors can't agree on how big a jump it would be. Gurman hasn't mentioned Apple's pricing plans in his reports.

There's also no word about the other tablets in Apple's lineup, all of which are at least a year or two old. The sixth-generation iPad mini and the $329 ninth-generation iPad were last updated in September 2021, while the awkwardly positioned 10th-generation iPad was released in October 2022 .

New hardware is always nice to have, but it does continue to feel like the power of Apple's M-series chips is a bit wasted on Apple's tablets. The iPad's relatively limited multitasking model, restrictions on third-party software and the general dearth of performance-intensive high-end apps in Apple's app store mean that performance really isn't a problem on current-generation iPads; there's nothing an iPad can currently do that an M1 can't handle with room to spare. Apple will announce new operating system versions at its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 10 ; it's possible that iPadOS will get some new features that more fully leverage the power of Apple's newer chips.

Apple plans to release a new lineup of iPad Pros with OLED displays in early May, according to a report from Bloomberg ’s Mark Gurman . The company is also reportedly planning to launch an iPad Air with a larger 12.9-inch display for the first time.

According to Gurman’s sources, the new iPad Pro models will feature Apple’s in-house M3 chip, along with a revamped Magic Keyboard with a bigger trackpad. The iPad Air, on the other hand, is rumored to come with the last-generation M2 chip and two display sizes: the standard 10.9-inch option and a larger 12.9-inch one. The current iPad Pro models use M2 chips, while the Air has an M1.

It’s been nearly two years since Apple released an updated iPad. Bloomberg says that, though the company initially planned on launching the new devices at the end of March or in April, Apple had to take extra time to finish software for the devices. If Apple does decide to release a new lineup of iPads in May, it would come just ahead of WWDC 2024, which Apple has set for June 10th .

Swarm Intelligence for Optimisation ProblemsACAT 2002 Moscow Bruce Denby LISIF, Paris, France [email protected] Sylvie Le Hégarat CETP, Vélizy, France [email protected]

Introduction • In 1959 entomologist Pierre-Paul Grassé showed that the behaviour of certain species of mound-building termites could be explained by a set of simple rules termite mound:

Nest Building Algorithm: Bellicositermes Natalensis • Make masticated pulp balls and carry them about • Drop them on raised, open areas when possible • Sniff out existing piles and stick yours on top • If tower gets too high: • Go elsewhere if no other pile in sniffing distance • Else, attach ball in direction of nearest neighbouring pile  Result : complex termite nest structures

Swarm Intelligence • Scientists have found similar behaviours in other social insects as well: bees, wasps, ants… Honeybee ‘Figure 8’ Waggle Dance - Waggle axis codes direction w/resp to sun - Length and intensity of waggle codes distance to nectar source

Swarm Intelligence • Since the early 1990’s, a significant amount of work has been done using social insect-inspired algorithms to solve both ‘toy’ and ‘real’ problems • There are yearly international conferences on swarm intelligence of various types - e.g. ANTS'2002 - From Ant Colonies to Artificial Ants: Third International Workshop on Ant Algorithms, Brussels, 11-14 Sept. 2002

Swarm Intelligence • Applications: TSP, quadratic assignment, graph colouring, optimisation, network routing, cluster finding, job scheduling, search engines, load balancing, etc. • Much of the work was performed using variants of Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) • ACO researchers: Schoonderwoerd, Holland, Dorigo, di Caro, Bonabeau, Théraulauz, Deneuborg, etc. ...

Ant Colony Optimisation • The most straightforward analogy of ACO is in ‘routing’ problems • While searching for food, ants deposit trails of pheromones which attract other ants

Ant Colony Optimisation • Shorter paths to food are traversed more quickly and have a better chance of being reinforced by other ants before the volatile pheromones evaporate • Using pheromones and random search procedures the colony thus rapidly finds the shortest paths to food • Illustrative Example: ACO for Routing in a Satellite Network (E. Sigel, B. Denby, S. Le Hégarat, to appear in Annals of Telecommunications, 2002)

ACO Routing for a Satellite Network • di Caro, Dorigo, and others showed that ACO gives good performance for routing in large scale telecom and computer networks • We adapted the ‘Dorigo’ algorithm to routing in a network of 72 LEO satellites • ACO was found to give performance superior to a ‘standard’ routing algorithm, SPF

The Satellite Network Model • 72 LEO satellites in 9 orbits of radius 1603 km • 50 o equatorial inclination; min. elevation 17.5 o • Orbital period 118.5 minutes; satellite footprint 5100 km diameter • Each satellite has 155 Mbits/s up & downlink transceivers and four 155.5 Mbits/s bi-directional intersatellite links (ISL) to communicate with 2 nearest inter- and intra-orbit neighbors. • Earth's surface (Mercator projection) divided in 12  24 grid with a single gateway handling all the traffic of the cell

The Traffic Model 12 5.5 5 10 4.5 4 8 t raff ic 3.5 (% o f th e 6 3 w hole d a y voice data 2.5 t raff ic ) 4 2 1.5 2 1 0 0.5 0 5 10 15 20 25 0 5 10 15 20 25 t i me ( h ) t i me ( h ) Temporal dependence of voice and data traffic expressed as a percentage versus time of day over 24 hours.

Traffic Levels for Gateways: Projection 2005 Grey scale: 1: 0.41 call/s, 2: 1.62 call/s, 3: 4.06 call/s, 4: 8.12 call/s, 5:  24.1 call/s, 6: 48.4  call/s, 7: 60.6 call/s, 8 = 80.7 calls/s.

Communication Establishment Probabilities • Values for voice (data) as a function of geographic location of source and destination nodes. Percentages sum to 100% left to right.

Simulation Scenarios

Baseline Ant Routing Algorithm • Once every 100 ms, each satellite node emits an ant with a random destination. • The ant follows the routing tables to the destination, except for a 1% ‘exploration’ probability, waiting in queues and memorising trip times en route. • When the destination is reached, it follows the same path back, jumping all queues, and updating routing tables along the way.

Ts,Ti,Tj s d s d s d s d s d s d s d s d {T} {T} Ts,Ti Pjdn d;nNj Pjdk(Tj-Td, Tjd) (Tj-Td) Ts Tj d d j T T T T P P P P : update i k d s Ant Routing Algorithm: Conceptual Ts,Ti,Tj,Tk KEY: : sd ant {T} {Tj d d}:mean jdtrip time table {Pjdn d; nNj}:node j routing table for destination d, neighborhood Nj

Ant Routing Table Update Algorithm • First calculate r = min{T/(<T>); 1} where T is the current ant trip time and <T> is the mean time for the path in question • Next, modify the probability of the link that is part of the ant's path according to Pant ISL = Pant ISL + (1-r)(1- Pant ISL) • and decrement the other three ISL's as PISL(i) = PISL(i) - (1-r) PISL(i)

Improvements to Baseline ACO • Two generic improvements to 'baseline' ACO are cited in the literature: • Replacing r by a so-called 'squashed' value rs (s here was chosen to be 0.2). • Using the 'fuzzy' routing technique of the ant packets for normal data packets as well. • Results presented are 'squashed'/'fuzzy' ACO • Improvement with ‘fuzzy’ routing is not without cost, as it leads to increased packet fragmentation

Geographic distribution of packet delays • Values for 'normal' traffic &'baseline' ACO, midnight at int’l dateline.

Dijkstra Algorithm for Comparison • Dijkstra finds the absolute shortest path according to some cost function involving propagation delays and queue lengths. • It assumes global, instantaneous knowledge and is not realisable. • Our version of Dijkstra ignored queue lengths and thus corresponds to a true absolute minimum (though unrealisable) delay, i.e., propagation delay only.

SPF Algorithm for Comparison • Each satellite sends a list of its queue lengths to every node in the network once per second. • The receiving node then updates its routing table based on this delayed information, using Dijkstra shortest path with a cost function cost = tpropagation + 0.6tqueue + 0.4<t>queue • The SPF update rate chosen gives an average routing bandwidth of about 408 kbits/s, i.e., roughly twice that of ACO (230.4 kbits/s).

90th percentile packet delays (s) a) 'low' b) 'normal' time (s) time (s) c) 'intermediate' d) 'high' 90th percentile packet delays (s) time (s) time (s) SPF ANT DIJKSTRA

90th percentile packet delays (s) g) 'bursty II' h) 'bursty III' time (s) time (s) 90th percentile packet delays (s) e) 'packet' f) 'bursty I' time (s) time (s) SPF ANT DIJKSTRA

Main Results • ACO satellite network routing gives near optimal packet delay distributions • ACO mean packet delays tens to hundreds of milliseconds lower than link state alg. SPF over a wide range of traffic conditions • Additional routing bandwidth introduced by ACO is 230.4 kbits/s, negligible compared to the system load of several Gbits/s, and about half that of SPF in these simulations (408 kbits/s)

‘Nature-Inspired’ Algorithms • A number of other modern optimisation and/or computing techniques are modelled upon natural phenomena: • Simulated Annealing / Annealing of crystalline structures • Genetic/Evolutionary Algorithms / Evolution in living systems • Neural Networks / Animal nervous systems • Agent-based systems / Social interactions

Simulated Annealing • Analogy between thermodynamic behaviour of solids and large combinatorial optimisation problems • A heated solid melts and particles take random configurations; then, the temperature is slowly decreased to let them arrange themselves in a state of minimal energy • If temperature is decreased too quickly, the solid freezes into a meta-stable state rather than into the ground state.

Simulated Annealing • Modelled using a Boltzmann distribution with a ‘temperature’ parameter, T : where Ei is the energy of the system in state i, kB the Boltzmann constant and Z(T) a normalisation factor • Transition ij accepted if ∆Uij = Ei-Ej < 0, or, if ∆Uij> 0, with probability

Simulated Annealing • At high T almost all modifications accepted, while at low T only small jumps accepted. • Simulated annealing is a stochastic relaxation algorithm which in theory enables to reach global optimality • Applications: as optimisation of NP-hard problems, integrated circuit routing, image processing

Genetic/ Evolutionary Algorithms • Each individual is a point in solution space • Population made to evolve by applying operators for crossover (inherited traits), mutation (new behaviours), and selection (survival of the fittest) • Key Issues: • Genome: how are individuals coded? • How is the initial population determined? • How is the ‘fitness function’ defined? • How are crossover and mutation implemented? • What is the selection mechanism (top 5?, best only?)

Genetic/Evolutionary Algorithms • These types of strategies have been applied to everything imaginable, but most often ‘academic’ problems: knapsack problem, graph problems, set covering, noisy function evaluation • The high computational complexity makes ‘real-world’ applications difficult for the moment • Some (M. Sipper, D. Mange, U. Tangen...) propose evolutionary hardware (FPGA…) to help overcome this problem

Neural Networks • Feed forward networks are good for pattern recognition and are used in a wide variety of applications from particle physics to finance • Recurrent (feedback) networks have been used with success in industrial control applications

Agent-Based Computing • « An autonomous agent is a system situated within and a part of an environment that senses that environment and acts on it, over time, in pursuit of its own agenda and so as to effect what it senses in the future. » Stan Franklin and Art Graesser Institute for Intelligent Systems University of Memphis

Common properties that make agents different from conventional programsfrom : « A gentle introduction to agents and their applications », by Michael Weiss, MITEL Corp. • Agents are autonomous, that is they act on behalf of the user • Agents contain some level of intelligence, from fixed rules to learning engines that allow them to adapt to changes in the environment • Agents don't only act reactively, but sometimes also proactively

Properties of agents, cont’d. • Agents have social ability, that is they communicate with the user, the system, and other agents as required • Agents may also co-operate with other agents to carry out more complex tasks than they themselves can handle • Agents may move from one system to another to access remote resources or even to meet other agents

Reactive Agents • Reactive agents do not have internal symbolic models, but react to the current state of the environment • They are simple and interact with others in simple ways • Complex patterns of behaviour can emerge from these interactions • Benefits: robustness, fast response time • Challenges: how to debug them?

Mobile Agents • Can migrate from one machine to another • Execute in platform-independent environment • Advantages: • Reduced communication cost • Asynchronous computing • Applications: • Distributed information retrieval • Telecommunication network routing

We may conclude that ‘ants’ are reactive, mobile, multi-agent systems

Careful, ‘agent’ doesn’t mean the same thing to all people!!

Why ‘Nature-inspired’ Algorithms? • They work • We might not otherwise have thought them up • The underlying physical model acts as a guide and gives us the confidence to try them • The introduction of randomness clearly plays a role in simulated annealing and in several aspects of genetic algorithms (initial state, mutations, crossover…)

Why - Distributed Computing? • The distributed nature of the algorithm is a factor in neural networks (distributed information storage) and agent-based models (distributed problem solving) • Grassé postulated that the termites’ depositing pheromones amounted to leaving environmental markers which could be combined with those of other agents to obtain more ‘global’ information • This he called ‘stigmergy’ (cf. stigma: mark)

Why - Emergent Property? • The complex final states of swarm systems recall the attractor states found in cellular automata and recurrent neural network systems • Some would say that swarm intelligence is an emergent property of multi-agent systems in the same way that an avalanche is an emergent property of a pile of individual snowflakes

Why - Self Organisation? • Self-organisation is an important aspect of agent-based systems • In simulated annealing and genetic algorithms, an ‘omniscient’ judge accepts or rejects subsequent steps • In ACO, shorter paths are automatically selected since faster ants refresh the pheromones more quickly

Conclusions • We’ve visited several ‘Nature-inspired’ algorithms • What’s new here are the ACO-like ones • Is ‘Agent-Based Computing’ poised to become the ‘Neural Networks’ of the 2000’s? • Will Ants help find the Higgs?

Conclusions • ACO adapts well to network-like structures - those with inherent distributed computing - while ACO simulations take forever (like genetic alg.) • One could imagine applications in • Online control (machines, networks, etc.) • Anything resembling image processing • Iterative data analysis tasks - track reconstruction, clustering - where some optimisation takes place

Moscow Sleepbox Hotel Looks Sci-Fi, Features iPad Access

presentation ipad pro 2022

If you’re looking for a sci-fi accommodation in Moscow, you may be interested in the sleeping pods from the Sleepbox Hotel. Moscow has just opened its first such hotel featuring the Sproject Launchpad wall mounted cases and… iPads.

sleepbox 1

Capsule hotels are a big deal in Japan and now that trend has reached Moscow. The hotel is connected to the airport by the Sheremetyevo Aeroexpress. If you’re wondering about the iPads, they are enclosed in the secure LaunchPad enclosure at the reception. They’re well strapped into the cases and I wonder if they’re connected to those big screen TVs or not.

If you ask me, I find sleeping pods highly claustrophobic, but that’s the way of the future probably. It’s what astronauts sleep like and probably people from the lower cost cruises. I can’t really tell if there are iPads in the room or at the reception alone. Well, as long as you have an iPad there’s no need for a window right?

Thanks Mark for the tip!

PRESS RELEASE

The new iPad Pro features a next-level Apple Pencil hover experience, ProRes video capture, superfast Wi-Fi 6E, and powerful features in iPadOS 16

TORONTO, ONTARIO Apple today announced the new iPad Pro with the M2 chip, delivering the ultimate combination of portability, versatility, and unbelievable performance. The new iPad Pro features a next-level Apple Pencil hover experience and superfast wireless connectivity, along with the world’s most advanced mobile display, pro cameras, Face ID, Thunderbolt, and a four-speaker audio system. New features in iPadOS 16 — including Stage Manager, full external display support, 1 desktop-class apps, and Reference Mode — take pro workflows on iPad even further. Enabled by its advanced hardware and iPadOS 16, iPad Pro has an incredible ecosystem of powerful pro apps unlike any other device of its kind. The new iPad Pro is available to order starting today, and in stores beginning Wednesday, October 26.

“The next-generation iPad Pro pushes the boundaries of what’s possible on iPad, bringing even more versatility, power, and portability to the ultimate iPad experience,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Powered by the M2 chip, the new iPad Pro features incredible performance and the most advanced technologies, including a next-level Apple Pencil hover experience, ProRes video capture, superfast wireless connectivity, and powerful iPadOS 16 features. There’s nothing else like it.”

M2, the start of Apple’s next generation of M-series chips, brings even more breakthrough performance and capabilities to iPad Pro, with industry-leading power efficiency, a unified memory architecture, and custom technologies.

M2 features an 8-core CPU — up to 15 percent faster than M1 — with advancements in both performance and efficiency cores, and a 10-core GPU, delivering up to 35 percent faster graphics performance for the most demanding users. Combined with the CPU and GPU, the 16-core Neural Engine can process 15.8 trillion operations per second — 40 percent more than M1 — making iPad Pro even more powerful when handling machine learning tasks. The M2 chip also features 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth — 50 percent more than M1 — and supports up to 16GB of fast unified memory, making multitasking and working with large assets even more fluid. 2

The performance of M2 turbocharges even the most demanding workflows, from photographers editing massive photo libraries and designers manipulating complex 3D objects, to healthcare professionals taking advanced imaging and analysis, to gamers enjoying graphics-intensive games. The power of M2 also extends to the new media engine and the image signal processor, which combined with the advanced cameras, enable users to capture ProRes video for the first time and transcode ProRes footage up to 3x faster. This means content creators can capture, edit, and publish cinema-grade video from a single device out in the field.

Powered by the new iPad Pro and iPadOS 16, hover with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) provides a completely new dimension for users to interact with their screen. Apple Pencil is now detected up to 12 mm above the display, allowing users to see a preview of their mark before they make it. This also allows users to sketch and illustrate with even greater precision, and makes everything users do with Apple Pencil even more effortless. For example, with Scribble, text fields automatically expand when the pencil gets near the screen, and handwriting converts to text even faster. Third-party apps can also take advantage of this new feature to enable entirely new marking and drawing experiences.

The new iPad Pro supports the fastest Wi-Fi connections with support for Wi-Fi 6E, 3 so users who need fast connections can take their demanding workflows with them everywhere. Downloads are up to 2.4Gb/s, 2x faster than the previous generation. Wi-Fi + Cellular models with 5G (sub-6GHz and mmWave 4 ) now support more 5G networks around the world, so users can access their files, communicate with colleagues, and back up their data in a snap while on the go. 5

In addition to big updates to Messages, new tools in Mail and Safari, the new Weather app, and more ways to interact with photos and video with Live Text and Visual Look Up, iPadOS 16 also introduces powerful productivity features that elevate the iPad Pro experience:

The new iPad models are designed to minimize their impact on the environment and include 100 percent recycled gold — a first for iPad — in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards, as well as recycled aluminum, tin, and rare earth elements. All iPad models meet Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency and are mercury-, BFR-, PVC-, and beryllium-free. Redesigned packaging in the new iPad Pro eliminates the outer plastic wrap, and 99 percent of the packaging is fibre based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from all packaging by 2025.

Today, Apple is carbon neutral for global corporate operations, and by 2030, plans to be 100 percent carbon neutral across the entire manufacturing supply chain and all product life cycles. This means that every Apple device sold, from component manufacturing, assembly, transport, customer use, charging, all the way through recycling and material recovery, will have net-zero climate impact.

Pricing and Availability

  • Full external display support for Stage Manager on M1 and M2 iPad models will be available in a software update later this year.
  • Performance is compared with previous-generation iPad Pro.
  • Wi-Fi 6E is not available in China mainland and Japan.
  • mmWave is only available in the US and Puerto Rico.
  • 5G wireless plan and coverage required. Speeds will vary. Check with carriers for details.
