A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program is one of the two degrees that will allow you to obtain a social work license in West Virginia. West Virginia is home to seven CSWE-accredited BSW programs as of February 2019. BSW programs expose students to professional social work practice through classroom experience and fieldwork. Typically, students will take courses in human behavior and the social environment, social welfare policy, research, social work practice, and field education. Master of Social Work (MSW)

As of February 2019, there is one CSWE-accredited MSW program in West Virginia, although a CSWE-accredited MSW from any state can be used for licensure. Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

The entry-level social work license in West Virginia is the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) credential. This license allows a social worker to provide general, non-clinical services such as case management, social advocacy, and program administration and development. To become an LSW, you must have a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program. After meeting the educational requirement, you must complete the following steps to earn your license.

1. Pass the ASWB Bachelor’s exam.

All aspiring LSWs in West Virginia must take the ASWB Bachelor’s exam to become licensed. Before you can register, you will need to contact the Board for pre-approval . The Bachelor’s exam fee is $230 as of February 2019. The test questions are designed to test your knowledge of general social work practice. After you have taken the exam, the ASWB will transfer your score to the Board within about two weeks.

2. Complete the LSW application.

After you have passed the ASWB Bachelor’s exam, the next step in the LSW licensure process is to request an LSW application from the Board using the Application Request Form . If the Board reviews this form and determines you are a candidate for licensure, they will send an application form to you. Complete the application and return it to the Board with the required $100 fee (as of February 2019).

3. Receive your LSW license.

Once you have satisfied the requirements described above, the Board will issue your LSW license. This will enable you to practice general social work in West Virginia.

Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)

To become licensed as a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW), you must hold an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program. LGSWs in West Virginia can practice general social work, teach bachelor’s and master’s students, and provide clinical services under supervision. Once you have satisfied the educational requirement for an LGSW license, you can move to the next steps in the licensure process, which are described below.

1. Pass the ASWB Master’s exam.

To become an LGSW in West Virginia, you must pass the ASWB Master’s exam . You will need to contact the Board for pre-approval before you can register for the test. The exam, which costs $230 as of February 2019, tests the candidate’s knowledge of social work practice, policy, and methodology. The exam consists of 170 questions but only 150 are scored. Your results will be transferred to the Board shortly after your test date.

2. Complete the LGSW application.

If you do not already hold an LSW license, you will need to request an LGSW application using the Board’s Application Request Form . After the Board sends the application form to you, complete it and return it with the $100 application fee (as of February 2019). If you hold an LSW license, you must instead submit the License Application Upgrade form to the Board, which requires a fee of $55 (as of February 2019).

3. Receive your LGSW license.

After the Board determines that you have met the requirements described above, they will issue your LGSW license. At this point, you can practice general social work without supervision and can provide clinical services under supervision.

Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)

Because you must have completed at least two years of social work practice before becoming credentialed as a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) in West Virginia, this license signals a higher level of experience than the LGSW to potential employers. LCSWs are able to provide advanced non-clinical social work services as well as practice clinical social work under supervision. To earn an LCSW license, you must have an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program. The steps below provide more information on becoming an LCSW after you hold a qualifying MSW.

1. Complete the required supervised experience.

To become an LCSW, you must complete two years of full-time employment (or 3,000 hours if working less than full-time) of post-graduate social work experience. This can be earned through regular employment as a social worker (such as under an LGSW license) or other social work experience gained after you completed your master’s degree.

2. Pass the ASWB Advanced Generalist exam.

After you have accrued enough social work experience for the LCSW license, you can contact the Board and request approval to take the ASWB Advanced Generalist exam , which is required for LCSW licensure. The exam consists of 170 questions, 150 of which are scored, and tests knowledge of advanced social work practice. The exam costs $260 as of February 2019.

3. Complete the LCSW application.

After you have passed the ASWB Advanced Generalist exam, the next step is to complete an LCSW application. If this is your first West Virginia social work license, request an LCSW application from the Board by completing the Application Request Form . Once you receive the application from the Board, complete it and return it to them with the $100 fee (as of February 2019). If you hold an active LSW or LGSW license, you can submit a License Upgrade Application with the $55 application fee (as of February 2019).

4. Receive your LCSW license.

After you have completed the steps described above, the Board will issue your LCSW license.

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

The Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) credential is the only West Virginia social work license that allows for the independent practice of clinical social work. For this license, you must have an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program and your training must have included coursework in psychopathology or abnormal psychology as well as clinical fieldwork experience. After meeting these requirements, you can obtain an LICSW license by completing the following steps.

1. Gain the required experience.

Aspiring LICSWs must have two years of full-time (or 3,000 hours of part-time) supervised social work experience. While earning these hours, you must receive at least 100 hours of supervision from a licensed clinical social worker. If you are completing this experience in West Virginia under an LGSW or LCSW license, you must have a supervision contract filed with the Board before beginning to accrue any hours. You can contact the Board to request any forms required to file this contract.

2. Pass the ASWB Clinical exam.

LCSW candidates must pass the ASWB Clinical exam to become licensed. The exam costs $260 as of February 2019 and consists of 170 questions. Before you can register for the Clinical exam, you must contact the Board and request pre-approval.

3. Complete the LICSW application.

After completing the steps above, you can submit an LICSW application to the Board. If you do not already hold a West Virginia social work license, you must complete the Application Request Form . The Board will send you an application, which you must return to them with the $100 application fee (as of February 2019). This application will require that your clinical supervisor(s) provide verification of your supervised experience.

If you already hold a West Virginia social work license, you should instead complete the License Upgrade Form and return it to the Board with the $55 fee (as of February 2019). You will still need to provide verification of your supervised hours before you are eligible to receive your LICSW license.

4. Receive your LICSW license.

After the Board receives your full application, evidence of a passing ASWB Clinical exam score, and verification of your supervised experience, they will issue your LICSW license. Once you receive this license, you can provide a full range of non-clinical and clinical social work services without supervision in West Virginia.

Social Work License Reciprocity in West Virginia

West Virginia does not have formal reciprocity with any other state. The Board will issue social work licenses to out-of-state applicants provided they meet the education and experience requirements for the level of licensure they are seeking. If you have already passed the required exam, you will not need to repeat it but must provide verification of past ASWB test scores. Out-of-state candidates interested in a West Virginia social work license should review the application page and contact the Board to request an application form. The application fee for all levels of licensure is $100 as of February 2019.

Licensing Renewal and Continuing Education Information

In West Virginia, social work licenses must be renewed every two years and social workers must complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours during that time period. At least 20 of these hours must be from organized CE programs, termed “Category I” by the Board. Up to 20 hours can be from self-study (“Category II”) activities. Of the required Category I hours, at least two must be on the mental health of veterans and their family members and one must be related to ethics. Provisional License to Practice as a Social Worker – This provisional license is designed for people who’ve earned degrees outside the field of social work who want to transition into this field. It allows you to perform certain social work functions under supervision. These include:

• Client assessments
• Service planning with clients to outline possible intervention strategies, and their implementation
• Palliative and supportive counseling activities
• Education for at-risk populations
• Assistive case management for services and resources

Level A-Licensed Social Worker (LSW) – This is the entry-level license for social work that permits you to engage in basic social work practice. You can engage in the same scope of practice as a provisional licensee, and additionally you can supervise provisional licensees once you’ve gained two years of experience.

Level B-Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) – This license allows you to engage in the same scope of practice as an LSW, and to additionally:

Level C-Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) – This license allows you to engage in the same scope of practice as an LGSW, and to additionally:

Level D-Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) – This license allows you to engage in the same scope of practice as an LCSW. You can additionally provide psychotherapy and counseling, as well as consultations and evaluations. You can provide all services independently.

Steps Towards Social Work Licensure in West Virginia

To qualify for licensure at any of the professional levels offered by the West Virginia Board of Social Work (WVBSW) you must:

If you’re already licensed in West Virginia and you meet the requirements to upgrade your license to the next level, you can do so by submitting this form and a $55 fee to the WVBSW.

Once you submit your application for licensure to the WVBSW you’ll be granted a six-month non-renewable temporary permit that allows you to practice while you prepare to take and pass the ASWB.

Provisional License to Practice as a Social Worker

Requirement Process:

• Earn a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Counseling, or other related field.
• Send a request to the WVBSW by email, fax, or mail asking for a provisional license application. Include your name, address, phone number, academic major, university name, and date of graduation with your request.
• Once you receive the application fill it out and send it to the WVBSW. When the WVBSW approves it you’ll be issued your Provisional License to Practice as a Social Worker.
• Each year in July you’ll need to send the WVBSW an Annual Compliance Verification that confirms you’re practicing under appropriate supervision and meeting all other requirements deemed necessary by the WVBSW.

Level A-Licensed Social Worker (LSW)

• Earn a bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
• Request an LSW application from the WVBSW using the License Application Request Form. Return the completed application to the WVBSW. Once the WVBSW approves your application it will notify the ASWB that you’re cleared to test.
• Register with the ASWB for its Bachelors exam. Once you pass this the WVBSW will issue your LSW license.

Level B-Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)

• Earn a master’s degree in Social Work.
• Request an LGSW application from the WVBSW using the License Application Request Form. Return the completed application to the WVBSW. Once the WVBSW approves your application it will notify the ASWB that you’re cleared to test.
• Register with the ASWB for its Masters exam. Once you pass this the WVBSW will issue your LGSW license.

Level C-Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)

• Complete two years of post-master’s social work practice experience.
• Request an LCSW application from the WVBSW using the License Application Request Form. Return the completed application to the WVBSW. Once the WVBSW approves your application it will notify the ASWB that you’re cleared to test.
• Register with the ASWB for its Advanced Generalist exam. Once you pass this the WVBSW will issue your LCSW license.

Level D-Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

• Earn a master’s or doctoral degree in Social Work. This must include a supervised clinical field placement at the graduate level, or you must complete an equivalent post-master’s clinical training. As a part of, or in addition to, your graduate studies you must complete a graduate course in abnormal psychology, psychopathology, or a course deemed equivalent by the WVBSW.
• Obtain two years of full-time, or 3,000 hours of part-time, supervised post-master’s clinical social work experience. This must include 100 hours of clinical supervision, including 70 hours of face-to-face supervision.
• Request an LICSW application from the WVBSW using the License Application Request Form. Return the completed application to the WVBSW. Once the WVBSW approves your application it will notify the ASWB that you’re cleared to test.
• Register with the ASWB for its Clinical exam. Once you pass this the WVBSW will issue your LICSW license.

Renewing Your Social Work License

All licenses issued by the WVBSW expire every two years. The WVBSW sends out renewal applications to all licensees at least 90 days before your license is set to expire. You can renew your license by completing this and returning it to the WVBSW. In order to renew you must pay the renewal fee and attest to having completed 40 hours of continuing education. If you hold a Provisional License to Practice as a Social Worker you’ll also need to complete 12 hours of WVBSW-approved coursework during each renewal period, unless you’re enrolled in a CSWE-accredited BSW or MSW degree program.

How Long Does it Take to Become a Social Worker in West Virginia?

The amount of time you invest to become licensed as a social worker in West Virginia depends on what level of licensure your goal is. Earning a BSW degree takes around four years. Earning an MSW degree is at least another two-year investment. Combined with the experience requirements for each level of licensure this amounts to at least:

• Four years for LSW and Provisional licenses
• Six years for an LGSW license
• Eight years for the LCSW and LICSW licenses

Social Work Degrees in West Virginia

Qualifying for any license above the Provisional level means earning a degree from a program that’s accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Right now there are 10 such programs, including two that are offered online. While the CSWE currently doesn’t accredit programs at the doctoral level, you can also choose to earn a degree at this highest status to maximize your level of knowledge in this field.

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW)

Earning a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program qualifies you for the LSW license. Right now there are seven such programs offered throughout West Virginia. These include a 400-hour field education segment, and total at least 120 semester credits. A BSW is a natural first step towards earning an MSW degree and qualifying for all remaining levels of licensure in the state.

Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)

Right now you can find three CSWE-accredited MSW programs in West Virginia, including two that have options for online completion. These automatically include a field education segment that’s at least 900 hours which can include internships, practicums, or other field experiences. Earning an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program fulfills the education requirement for the LGSW and LCSW licenses, and can also fulfill the education requirement for the LICSW license.

Doctoral Degree in Social Work

To be eligible for the LICSW license you must earn a master’s or doctoral degree in Social Work from a program that’s accredited by the CSWE. While doctoral programs are not currently accredited by the CSWE, you can still earn one of these to ensure you’ve gained the highest-possible educational qualifications in this field. You’ll find degrees at this level offered as PhD and Doctor of Social Work (DSW) programs.

Reciprocity

You can apply for licensure in West Virginia via reciprocity if you’re licensed at an equivalent level in another state and your state’s licensing requirements were similar to West Virginia’s. LSW Requirements in West Virginia

• Education: Applicants seeking to become a licensed social worker (LSW) in West Virginia must possess a bachelor’s degree in social work from a social work program that has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Proof of degree in the form of an official academic transcript must be provided to the West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners (WVBSWE) for approval prior to licensure.
• Exam: Prior to granting of licensure, applicants must have received a passing grade in the basic level exam that is designed and administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).
• Responsibilities: Upon becoming a licensed social worker, the licensee is permitted to practice social work in a number of areas. The scope of a licensed social worker can include, but is not necessarily limited to: social advocacy for clients, tasks related to community organizing and training activities that help to increase a client’s social function and standard of living.It should also be noted that a candidate who has received their social work degree through an alternative educational path may apply for a provisionary license as a social worker, but they are not allowed to practice social work independently.

LGSW Requirements in West Virginia

• Education: The ability to practice as a licensed graduate social worker in West Virginia is dependent on the applicant having completed a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited social work program and submitting proof of said degree to the WVBSWE in the form of an academic transcript.
• Exam: Upon completion of degree, applicants must sit for and pass the ASWB intermediate level exam before licensure will be granted.
• Responsibilities: In addition to performing all the duties of a licensed social worker, licensed graduate social workers may also teach social work classes to bachelor’s and master’s level students, as well as perform certain psychotherapeutic services under the guidance of a behavioral health specialist.

LCSW Requirements in West Virginia

• Education: The licensing requirements for social work in West Virginia to become a licensed certified social worker (LCSW) include the prerequisite of completion of a master’s level degree in social work. Said degree must have been attained from a social work program that has been granted accreditation by the CSWE.
• Experience: After the LCSW has completed their master’s degree, they must complete at least two years of post-graduate social work experience that should take place before the applicant applies for examination.
• Exam: Candidates seeking licensure as a LCSW in West Virginia must receive a passing grade in the Advanced Generalist exam that is administered by the ASWB.
• Responsibilities: In addition to performing the duties of both a licensed social worker and a licensed graduate social worker, licensed certified social workers can apply social work theory in diagnosing and treating certain mental disorders. Additionally, licensed certified social workers may also perform behavioral health services that are related to social work.

LICSW Requirements in West Virginia

• Education: The educational requirement for receiving licensure as a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) can be completed in three separate ways. Firstly, the applicant can have a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited social work program. Secondly, the applicant may have a Ph.D. Finally, the candidate may have a doctoral degree in social work from a university that has been accredited by the CSWE.
• Experience: Over a period not to exceed two years a candidate seeking licensure as a LICSW must have completed 3,000 hours of clinical work experience.  100 of these hours must have come under the direct supervision of a qualified clinical licensed social worker; 60 of the 100 hours must have taken place in either a face-to-face or group situation. Additional supervisory requirements can be found by consulting the West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners .
• Exam: Upon completion of clinical work experience, candidates for licensed clinical social work licensure must receive a passing grade in the ASWB Clinical level examination.
• Responsibilities: In addition to performing the same duties as the previous three license types, licensed independent clinical social workers provide assessment and treatment for psychological disorders in a clinical setting. Treatment can include solutions ranging from psychotherapy and group counseling.

Limited License Types in West Virginia

In West Virginia, there are two types of limited licenses related to social work: Emeritus Status License and Inactive Status License.

An Emeritus Status License is for licensed social workers who have retired but who possess twenty years’ social work experience and whose license is still in good standing. Becoming an emeritus license entitles the possessor to practice social work for twenty hours a week.

An Inactive Status License is for licensed social workers in good standing who have stopped practicing social work for an indeterminate period of time. Inactive status protects a social workers license from expiration and allows them to more easily transition back to active status when they are ready to being practicing again.

The Importance of CSWE Accreditation

The Council of Social Work Education provides accreditation standards to colleges and university in almost all 50 states. Accreditation, which takes place over a multi-step process, ensures that potential social workers are properly trained in such areas as critical thinking skills and social work theory so that they can effectively perform social work with communities and individuals upon their graduation. Due to the fact that social workers primarily serve vulnerable populations, accredited training provides protection for both the social workers and their clients. It is possible to have the accreditation requirement waved in some circumstances, but a waiver is typically granted solely to medical professionals and licensed psychologists.

Persons without a CSWE-accredited degree could potentially apply with their respective state board for an exemption. However, the majority of exemptions are typically granted to individuals already licensed to practice other related disciplines like medicine or psychology.

The West Virginia Board of Social Work oversees social work licensure in the state. There are four types of licenses offered: licensed social worker (LSW), licensed graduate social worker (LGSW), licensed certified social worker (LCSW), and licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW).

Education Requirements

LSW licensure serves as initial certification for the social work profession in West Virginia. LSW applicants need a bachelor’s in social work from a program accredited by the Council of Social Work and Education (CSWE). LGSW and LCSW candidates need a CSWE-accredited master’s degree in social work. Professionals seeking LICSW licensure need a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program with completed coursework in abnormal psychology.

Exam Application Process and Requirements

To earn the LSW credential, candidates must pass the Association of Social Work Boards bachelor’s exam. The exam costs $230 and consists of 170 questions. To earn LGSW or LCSW credentials, candidates must pass the master’s exam, which also costs $230. Candidates for LICSW licensure must pass the master’s exam and obtain 3,000 hours of supervised experience over the course of two years.

Application fees for LSW credentials in West Virginia total $100. LGSW, LCSW, and LICSW fees total $155. Candidates for each of these licensure options can register for the appropriate exam through the ASWB website.

Continuing Education and Licensure Renewal

All West Virginia social workers must renew their license every two years. They must complete at least 40 hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal period. Of these hours, 20 hours must fall under “Category I” continuing education programs organized by the West Virginia Board of Social Work. Professionals may earn the other 20 hours through self-study activities, deemed “Category II”. Each West Virginia social work license costs $85 to renew.

• Concentrations: The MSW at WVU includes a generalist track and a specialization in advanced integrated practice.
• Credits and Courses: Advanced standing students complete 36 credit hours through 12 courses. Regular standing students complete 60 credit hours. Both degree tracks include field internships.
• Completion Time: WVU’s online master of social work is only offered on a part-time basis. Advanced standing students can complete the degree in two years. Regular standing students can graduate in three years.
• Field Education: Students complete 300 hours of field experience during their first year and 600 placement hours during their second year.
• Transfer Policies: To enter the program as an advanced standing student, learners need a CSWE-accredited bachelor’s degree in social work within the previous eight years.
• Online Student Support: Online learners benefit from access to enrollment coaches and academic advisors; Blackboard support; WVU libraries; and a comprehensive WVU Portal that includes information on classes, grades, financial aid, and degree planning.
• Cost: $631/credit hour
• Admission Requirements: Applicants need a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 and at least a 3.25 GPA in all undergraduate social work courses. Students with overall GPAs between 2.75-3.0 must submit GRE scores for consideration. Regular standing students need a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, while advanced standing students need a bachelor’s in social work from a CSWE-accredited program. Applicants must submit an essay, a case study, and three letters of recommendation.

School of Social Work celebrates 50th anniversary of BSW accreditation

The Bachelor of Social Work Program is among the first social work education programs in the country to receive accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education.

“We are immensely proud of the legacy and impact of our BSW program. The accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff and students,” said Gregory Dunaway, dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. 

Over the last 50 years, the program has produced more than 5,000 graduates who have made significant contributions in the field across West Virginia and beyond.

“The School of Social Work is proud of our strong heritage in BSW education,” said Deana Morrow, director of the School of Social Work. “Those of us presently serving in the School of Social Work recognize that we stand on the shoulders of the many social work faculty leaders who came before us.

“We are working diligently to both preserve and advance the distinguished program they and our graduates built. The 50th anniversary celebration is not just a reflection on the past but a commitment to building an even stronger future for social work education at WVU,” Morrow added.

The School of Social Work is scheduled to launch an online bachelor’s degree program option in the fall of 2025. The online program will complement the existing campus-based program, providing greater accessibility and opportunity for students and helping to address a critical need for more social workers in Appalachia. 

In addition to the bachelor’s degree, the School of Social Work also offers master’s and doctoral degrees in social work.

Regular Licensees:

Effective July 1, 2022, all  regular licensed social workers (LSW, LGSW, LCSW, LICSW) must earn thirty  (30) hours of WV Board of Social Work (WVBSW) approved continuing social work education hours in each two-year licensing period. This is a decrease from the previous requirement of 40 hours.

Licensees have a number of options in meeting the required thirty hours of continuing education, which may include face to face training and online courses (Category I) and independent study (Category II).   While the social worker may use all thirty  hours attending approved conferences or workshops, there are restrictions on the number of hours available for online or independent study.

Category I Hours:  

At least twenty hours must be presented by a Board approved provider, ten hours which must be face to face or synchronous.  

1.    At least 2 of the 20 Category I contact hours shall be in mental health conditions specific to veterans and family members of veterans .  Training specific to veterans and family members of veterans may include, but not be limited to, inquiring about whether clients are veterans or family members of veterans; screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder; readjustment issues; risk of suicide and prevention of suicide; addiction; military sexual assault; depression and grief.  The Board will also accept courses addressing military culture as it relates to improving the cultural core competencies of practitioners.

 You will need to include the certificate that you get at the end of the course when you submit your 2 hours of CEUs. 

 2.    At least 1 of the 40 contact hours shall be in social work ethics.  Regular    licensees have the opportunity to use their own judgement in meeting that requirement-online, face to face, or independent study (for example, simply rereading the Code of Ethics as independent study will satisfy this requirement).  Service worker registrants or provisional licensees are not eligible for independent study.

Approved providers are certified instate providers listed on the Board's web page, the National Association of Social Workers (national or state chapters), the Association of Social Work Boards, another state social work licensing Board or a social work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.  Any event sponsored by an approved provider will satisfy Category I hours.  A certificate or continuing education issued by the provider is required; the certificate must reflect the approved provider or provider number, the course title and the amount of continuing education. 

Effective July 1, 2022, there will no longer be a waiver to the ten hour face to face training requirement. However, the Board has added additional language which will allow individuals to still meet this requirement virtually. 

1.     The Board requires that at least ten hours be synchronous training , meaning that the training is led by an instructor and everyone participates in training-for instruction, discussion or activities at the same time. This may be in person "in seat" or it may be virtual via technology such as Zoom. 

2.  The Board permits individuals to  take take up   ten hours of approved online coursework/ asynchonous training (online training that is self paced)

Category II Hours (Provider #490000)

Licnensees may use up to 10 hours in Individual Professional Activities that do not require prior approval.   Course content must relate to social work or improving your practice and may include :

·        Attendance at workshops that are not provided by an approved CE provider

·        Reading or writing of papers, journals, articles, or books with relevant social work objectives and content

·        Preparation time when serving as a presenter at a social work program;

·        Internet research into specific areas of social work methods and practice, issues, etc.;

·        Online courses in excess of the approved ten hours

·        Viewing videos of prevalent and problematic social, health, family issues; this does not include movies or shows where the primary goal is to entertain

The choices are fairly broad, and at our licensees’ discretion, but the Board does require that the activities either relate to social work or enhance your area of social work practice.  Some topics may be required by an individual’s employer-such as Defensive Driving or your agency’s Compliance policy, but would not fit those aforementioned guidelines.  Of course, if an individual is uncertain about a particular topic or activity and wants clarification, we are available to questions either by phone or email.

Please note that, while service is appreciated, volunteer hours no longer count as continuing education.

Regular Licensees with Special Emeritus Status:

Regular licensees with  Emeritus status are not required to pursue continuing social work education.  

Temporary Permit Holders:

Temporary Permit holders  are not required to earn continuing social work education until they receive their full regular license. The Temporary Permit is only issued for six months to allow the candidate time to take the state social work exam.  

Provisional Licensees:

Provisional licensees  must earn a total of twenty (20) hours in each of the two-year licensing periods. Provisional licensees are not required to earn hours on veterans mental health, and are not eligible to take independent study or online coursework to their continuing education requirement (with the exception of a CSWE accredited social work class conducted online)

Service Worker Registrants:

Registrants must earn a total of twenty (20) hours in each two-year renewal period. Service Worker registrants are  required to earn 2 hours on mental health disorders common to veterans and their families and one hour of social work ethics.  These must be taken either online or face to face, and as Service Worker Registrants are not eligible to use independent study 

Reporting Continuing Education:

Use the record or certificate issued by your continuing education provider.    The Board's recording form should be used only for independent study or if you have lost the attendance certificate or record provided at the training; please make every effort to use the record provided at your training

Setting up your free CE Broker account will help you in keeping track of your continuing education and alleviate the need to retain copies of your continuing education.  You can enter and upload your continuing education as it is earned and your certificate is available when you need it. If you do not use CE Broker, submit earnings annually and /or 90 days prior to renewal of license. Please allow plenty of time as the Board is required to do random audits of continuing education, and this may delay processing if additional information is required.   Make copies of your CEUs so you can keep track of the credits you have; Board staff do not always have time to answer individual questions on the number of credits you have.
