Let’s Learn the Basics of Tagalog Sentence Structure!

Any Filipino who grew up in the 80s would be familiar with Barok, one of the most popular Pinoy comic book characters at that time. His character was similar to those in America’s The Flintstones , but instead of speaking like Fred or Barney, he spoke like Tarzan. And you know what that’s like —words jumbled and all.

In the Philippines, a person who can’t speak straight Tagalog or English is labeled as someone who is Barok magsalita (one who speaks like Barok ).

That is why it’s crucial to learn the proper Tagalog sentence structure. For one, it helps your readers or listeners understand the simplest sentences you’re trying to convey (not to mention it will keep you from being nicknamed Barok ) .

But don’t you worry, because if there’s one thing about Filipino grammar that’s not too difficult to learn, it’s Tagalog word order. What most learners of the Filipino language love is its flexibility when it comes to word order. You’ll find out what I mean later on when we get to the lesson proper.

For now, let’s get to the basics of Filipino sentence structure first.

1. An Overview of Tagalog Word Order

The most common sentence structure used in the English language is S-V-O (Subject-Verb-Object). It’s acceptable to use the same word order in Filipino, which is what many beginners do. However, when it comes to spoken Filipino, using S-V-O will result in the speaker sounding awkward. Let’s take this sentence for example: 

 S       V     O

“I am studying Filipino.”

If you translate this into Tagalog, you will get: Ako ay nag-aaral ng Filipino . 

Now, this one is grammatically correct, but when spoken, it should be structured as:

V                S            O

“Studying     I     Filipino.”  →  Direct Translation

• Nag-aaral ako ng Filipino.

That said, word order in Tagalog is primarily V-S-O, and S-V-O is considered an inverted form ( Kabalikang Anyo in Tagalog). But then, it also follows the V-O-S structure . 

One very important thing you need to understand about Tagalog, though, is that it doesn’t always follow the subject-predicate structure. In the English language, the object within a sentence is always different from the subject. In Filipino, however, a word that follows a direct marker, like si or ang , is the subject. This means that the object can also function as the subject. Here’s an example:

 S          V         O

“Julia is studying Filipino.”

Si Julia ay nag-aaral ng Filipino .

Let’s translate this into Filipino using the V-S-O pattern.

V                      S            O

“Studying        Julia      Filipino.”  →  Direct Translation

Nag-aaral si Julia ng Filipino.

Now, let’s try using the V-O-S pattern instead.

V                      O            S

“Studying        Filipino     Julia.”

Nag-aaral ng Filipino si Julia.

Notice that in the S-V-O example, the sentence uses the word ay between the subject (Julia) and the verb ( nag-aaral ). It’s long been thought (and taught) that ay is the copula “to be.” More recent sources, however, say that ay is more of a replacement for a comma or a slight pause. The same sources say that it can’t be a verb since it can appear in a sentence along with other verbs, although in most cases, it seems that it’s the direct translation of the verb “is.” 

Keep in mind, too, that ay only appears in the S-V-O form of the sentence (which, by the way, is viewed as formal or literary). Here are a few examples:

• “The child is playing.”

Ang bata AY naglalaro.

• “Butch is drinking.”

Si Butch AY umiinom.

• “Kobe is sleeping.”

Si Kobe AY natutulog.

• “The lady is sewing.”

Ang ale AY nananahi.

2. Basic Word Order with Subject, Verb, and Object

Compared to the English language, word order in Filipino is more flexible. In fact, you can construct certain sentences in up to six different ways. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the following sentence:

“The man gave the woman some money.”

There are six different ways you can write or say this sentence in Filipino. Each of these sentences conveys the same meaning, and they all include the same grammatical components. And yet, as you can see, the words are ordered differently.

• Nagbigay ng pera sa babae ang lalaki. 
• Nagbigay ng pera ang lalaki sa babae.
• Nagbigay sa babae ng pera ang lalaki.
• Nagbigay sa babae ang lalaki ng pera.
• Nagbigay ang lalaki sa babae ng pera.
• Nagbigay ang lalaki ng pera sa babae.

Here, you can see that the verb ( nagbigay ) is always in the initial position, but the order of the rest of the words is adjustable. This shows how flexible Tagalog can be!

Did you say flexible?

Let’s try a simpler sentence this time. 

“I study Filipino.” 

This can be translated in a couple of ways:

S                V O

• Ako ay nag-aaral ng Filipino.

V                 S         O

Both of these translations are correct, but in normal conversations, you would usually use the second example: Nag-aaral ako ng Filipino.

Example: Nag-aaral ako ng Filipino ngayon sa FilipinoPod101. (“I am currently studying Filipino via FilipinoPod101.”)

3. Filipino Word Order with Prepositional Phrases

When it comes to sentences with prepositional phrases, the order of the words is similar to that in English. Let’s take the sentence below for example:

• Place Preposition. “He studies at home .” ( Nag-aaral siya ng Filipino sa bahay . )
• Time Preposition. “He studies in the evening .” ( Nag-aaral siya ng Filipino sa gabi . )
• Preposition of Manner. “He studies with his friend .” ( Nag-aaral siya ng Filipino kasama ang kaibigan niya . )

Based on the examples, you can see that the preposition is placed AFTER the object. This is how the words are ordered in conversations. But in writing, the preposition can be placed BEFORE the object as shown in the following examples:

• Place Preposition. “He studies Filipino at home .” ( Nag-aaral siya sa bahay ng Filipino. )
• Time Preposition. “He studies Filipino in the evening .” ( Nag-aaral siya sa gabi ng Filipino. )
• Preposition of Manner. “He studies Filipino with his friend .” ( Nag-aaral siya kasama ang kaibigan niya ng Filipino. )

Question: Can the preposition/prepositional phrase be placed at the BEGINNING of the sentence? Let’s see.

• Place Preposition. “He studies Filipino at home.” ( Sa bahay siya nag-aaral ng Filipino. )
• Time Preposition. “He studies Filipino in the evening.” ( Sa gabi siya n ag-aaral ng Filipino. )
• Preposition of Manner. “He studies Filipino with his friend.” ( Kasama niya ang kaibigan niyang nag-aaral ng Filipino. )

Answer : ABSOLUTELY ! In fact, the most natural way to say the given example sentences in Tagalog is by placing the preposition/prepositional phrase at the beginning of the sentence. 

4. Word Order with Modifiers

Modifiers have many functions, including clarifying, qualifying, or limiting a particular word in a sentence to add emphasis or detail. These grammatical elements are often in the form of adjectives and adverbs. 

In Tagalog grammar, a modifier can either be an adjective or an adverb depending on the word it’s modifying. For instance, if the word being modified in a sentence is a noun, then the modifier used is an adjective. If, on the other hand, the word being modified is a verb, the modifier is an adverb.

Take the word mabuti , for instance, which means “good.”

It can be used to describe a noun, like estudyante (“student”): estudyanteng mabuti (“good student”). 

In this sentence, mabuti functioned as an adjective.

It can be used to describe verbs, too. You can say: nag-aral nang mabuti (“studied well”). 

Here, mabuti now functions as an adverb.

In Tagalog, modifiers can appear either before or after the subject, but what plays a huge part here are the linkers na and – ng. Whenever you see these enclitics in a sentence, it means modification has taken place.

In these examples, the modifier appears before the subject:

• mabait na estudyante (“kind/good student”)
• matalinong estudyante (“bright student”)
• masunuring estudyante (“obedient student”)

We can also place the modifier after the subject:

• estudyanteng mabait (“kind/good student”)
• estudyanteng matalino (“bright student”)
• estudyanteng masunurin (“obedient student”)

As you’ve noticed, the meaning of the phrases didn’t change even if the position of the modifiers did.

Matalinong estudyante. (“Bright student.”)

Oh, and before anything else, let’s talk about the markers na and – ng for a second. Actually, -ng is simply a modified form of na . It’s used to replace na if the word that comes before it ends in a vowel. But what if na follows a word ending in the letter n ? If that’s the case, we drop the n from ng so that it now becomes g . We use na if the word it follows ends in a consonant. 

We can see some of these rules applied in the recent examples, but let’s check out some more:

Now, let’s try it with some verbs:

Clear? Good. Now, let’s see how a regular sentence can be transformed into a question.

5. Transforming a Regular Sentence into a Question

In the Tagalog language, there is one go-to word for forming interrogative sentences . That word is ba . This marker is actually one of the several untranslatable Tagalog words. If you want to change a sentence from the simple or imperative forms to the interrogative form, you simply add the word ba . Let’s try it with some sentences.

• Simple Form: Nag-aaral si Arlene ng Filipino. (“Arlene is studying Filipino.”)
• Interrogative Form: Nag-aaral ba si Arlene ng Filipino? (“Is Arlene studying Filipino?”)
• Imperative Form: Mag-aral ka ng Filipino. (“Go and study Filipino.”)
• Interrogative Form: Mag-aaral ka ba ng Filipino? (“Are you going to study Filipino?”)

Ba is added either at the end of the sentence, or after the verb or the noun.

In the following examples, ba is positioned at the end of the sentence.

• Simple Form: Nag-aaral ka. (“You are studying.”)
• Interrogative Form: Nag-aaral ka ba? (“Are you studying?”)
• Imperative Form: Mag-aral ka. (“Go and study.”)
• Interrogative Form: Mag-aaral ka ba ? (“Are you going to study?”)

What’s unique about the way Filipinos communicate is that they can do so even with just a single word (sometimes even with no words at all !). Let’s take this scenario, for example. 

A man just got home and asked his wife if their dog (who wasn’t feeling well) finally decided to eat.

Husband: Kumain ba ? (“Did she eat?”) 

Wife: Oo. (“Yes.”)

If the husband only said Kumain? It would still be a valid sentence and would be understood as Kumain ba?

It gets crazier with this typical exchange by the elevator.

Man 1: Bababa ba ? (“Is it going down?”)

Man 2: Bababa. (“It is going down.”)

Golly! That’s seven successive instances of a single syllable!

Seven syllables. Did I count that right?

It’s not all the time, though, that ba is necessary. Just like in most languages, you can just add a question mark at the end of a declarative sentence to turn it into a question, particularly if the question has a tone of surprise to it.

• Interrogative Form: Nag-aaral si Arlene ng Filipino? (“Arlene is studying Filipino?”)
• Interrogative Form: Mag-aaral ka ng Filipino? (“You’re going to study Filipino?”)

Pumasa ako sa Filipino? (“I passed Filipino?”)

In this section, we’re going to apply what we’ve learned about Tagalog sentence structure so far. Again, there are several ways to arrange words in a Filipino sentence, but let’s just use the one that’s often used in casual conversations.

Taylor swift review writer's name left out over safety concerns, taylor swift magazine redacts reviewer's name ... swifties sent violent threats.

Taylor Swift 's fans jump to defend their girl T-Swizzle ... and, one magazine's so concerned they removed a reviewer's byline -- 'cause they worried the person might get threats.

Paste, an entertainment/culture outlet, published its review of "The Tortured Poets Department" Friday ... but didn't include a specific author's name in the byline.

The magazine included an editor's note on its account ... saying when it reviewed "Lover" back in 2019 the writer who penned the piece received threats of violence -- and, the mag didn't want to put an employee in danger.

Probably a good call ... 'cause the review absolutely trashes Swift's 11th studio album -- saying it infantilizes its audience and comparing it to controversial poet Rupi Kaur 's work.

The opening line sets the tone for the entire piece ... with the writer starting off by saying, "Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this!" -- so, yeah the review's pretty critical.

But, Paste's review ain't stopping people from listening to the album ... 'cause 'TTPD' reportedly made history when it became the first album to garner more than 300 million Spotify streams in just one day.

BTW ... people online have mixed reactions to Paste's decision -- with some saying her fans should be allowed to debate with a person who's criticizing their fav artist while others applauded Paste for protecting their writer.

Paste better be careful though ... or they might end up getting name-dropped in Taylor's 12th album!

Pro-Palestinian valedictorian speaks out after USC cancels speech

The University of Southern California valedictorian whose planned graduation speech was canceled due to what the school referred to as safety concerns told CBS News that she feels "betrayed" by the academic institution. 

Asna Tabassum, 22, majored in biomedical engineering and has a minor in "Resistance to Genocide," an interdisciplinary series of courses that researches the "causes, results and representations of attempted genocide, as well as resistance to genocidal mass violence," according to USC's website . 

Critics said Tabassum shared social media posts that promoted "antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric," and highlighted a link in her public Instagram profile to a website that refers to Zionism, a movement that calls for the development and protection of a Jewish state, as a "racist settler-colonial ideology."  

Tabassum, who is Muslim and pro-Palestinian, said the link was from years ago, and told CBS News' Carter Evans her social media accounts have always been private. 

"I'm not apologizing for the link that I put in my Instagram. What I am saying is that I'm committed to human rights. And I'm committed to the human rights for all people," Tabassum said. "A lot of the campaign against me has been, for example, claiming that I don't value the life of Jews. That's simply not true." 

In a statement released through the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Los Angeles, Tabassum said she has been subject to a "campaign of racist hatred" from "anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices" because of her "uncompromising belief in human rights for all." 

Tabassum told CBS News that her opinions about the world are informed by what she learned from her USC courses, including the "Resistance to Genocide" minor. She said she was honored when, two weeks ago, she was chosen to speak at the school's commencement ceremony, and said she planned to share a "core message" of "hope." However, just days later, the offer was rescinded. 

USC provost Andrew Guzman said social media discussions regarding Tabassum's selection "had taken on an alarming tenor" and "escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security," prompting the cancelation. About 65,000 people are expected to attend the commencement ceremony in May.

"While this is disappointing, tradition must give way to safety," Guzman wrote in a message to the university community. "This decision is not only necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students, but is consistent with the fundamental legal obligation — including the expectations of federal regulators — that universities act to protect students and keep our campus community safe." 

Tabassum said that she had not "received any physical threats," but "won't discount the amount of hatred" she has seen online. However, she told CBS News that she "was never given the evidence that any safety concerns and that any security concerns were founded." 

"I think anyone who's watching this ... can draw their own conclusion," Tabassum said. "I look at what I look like, I am who I am. I stand up for what I stand for."  

In his letter, Guzman said that the school's decision has "nothing to do with freedom of speech." 

"There is no free-speech entitlement to speak at a commencement," he wrote. "The issue here is how best to maintain campus security and safety, period." 

Tabassum said she disagreed with Guzman's statement. 

"It's expression, it's academic discourse," Tabassum said. "And in many ways, it is speech that is being stifled."

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called for an end to Britain’s “sick note culture” in a speech on Friday morning.

Sunak made the announcement when discussing U.K. welfare reform , touching on how many people are being signed off work by doctors’ notes known locally as “ fit notes. ” He also set out plans to reduce the number of people turning to sick leave if the Conservative party is re-elected in the upcoming general election, which has to take place no later than Jan. 28, 2025. 

In a speech at the Centre for Social Justice in London, Sunak said there’s a "growing number of people who've become economically inactive," citing figures that have risen to 850,000 since the pandemic due to long term sickness. Sunak said “fully half” of these individuals say they have depression and anxiety. 

He has described his plan to reform the welfare system as a “moral mission,” adding the welfare state should help people back into work.

"I will never dismiss or downplay the illnesses people have," Sunak said, before adding that it would be wrong to accept the current "growing trend” of people using sick leave. He added that he believes “good work” improves mental and physical health and warned against the risk of “over medicalising” everyday hardship.  

A record high number of 2.8 million people are out of work as of February, according to the Office for National Statistics. NHS data showed that almost 11 million fit notes were issued last year in England, with 94% of those signed "not fit for work."

Sunak also said that the British taxpayer provides the safety net of welfare services and that the number of people unable to work is not “economically sustainable.” Sunak said the U.K. government spends £69 billion on benefits for people of working age with disabilities and health 

conditions, a figure he said exceeds schooling, transport, and policing budgets. 

“We don’t just need to change the sick note, we need to change the sick note culture so the default becomes what work you can do—not what you can’t,” he said. “I worry very much about benefits becoming a lifestyle choice.”

In his speech, Sunak said that if the Tories are re-elected, they will be “more ambitious” when assessing people’s potential to work and ensure employers make reasonable adjustments for employees.

He said the government will trial a system where "specialist work and health professionals" determine if a person requires a fit note, rather than doctors. His reform plan will require anyone working less than half the hours of a full-time work week to seek additional hours of work in return for benefits.

Sunak also said that anyone failing to comply with conditions outlined by a work coach, or accepting an available job, will lose their claim and have their welfare benefits “removed entirely.” 

He added that the government will crack down on fraud in the welfare system, and take a "more objective and rigorous approach" to Personal Independence Payments for those with mental ill health. 

How are experts reacting to Rishi Sunak’s welfare reform plans?

Sunak’s proposal invited swift criticism from medical bodies and professionals. Dr. Katie Bramall-Stainer, chair of General Practitioners Committee England , the British Medical Association’s GP committee, said fit notes are “carefully considered” before they are issued, the Guardian reported citing PA Media. 

“We do recognise the health benefits of good work, and that most people do want to work, but when they are unwell, people need access to prompt care. With a waiting list of 7.5 million—not including for mental health problems—delays to diagnostics, and resulting pressures on GP practices, patients cannot get the treatment they need to be able to return to work,” Bramall-Stainer said. 

“So rather than pushing a hostile rhetoric on ‘sick note culture,’ perhaps the Prime Minister should focus on removing what is stopping patients from receiving the physical and mental healthcare they need, which in turn prevents them from going back to work.”

Meanwhile, James Taylor, the director of strategy at disability equality charity Scope, described Sunak’s speech as “ a full scale assault on disabled people. ” 

In a series of posts shared on X, formerly Twitter, Taylor said: “Welfare is not 'lifestyle' choice. Supporting people who are long-term sick or [have a] disability financially, removing the threat of sanctions, and investing in public services is a choice. Think today the government is making the wrong choice.”

Taylor added that the charity has observed the inverse, with sick people returning to work too soon. “If [the government] is serious about economic inactivity then focus on building trust and voluntary support,” he argued.

How are politicians responding to Rishi Sunak’s welfare reforms?

Labour’s shadow housing minister Matthew Pennycook accused Rishi Sunak of seeking a “cheap headline” with his speech on sick note culture in an interview with Sky News . He said Britain’s National Health Service has been “on its knees after 14 years of Conservative government” leaving many on long-term sickness unable to get the treatment they need. 

“This announcement screams to me a government that, after 14 years, are out of ideas and out of time,” Pennycook said. “We’ve got to bring NHS waiting lists down. We got to do more on mental health support. We’ve also got to reform social security. We’ve got to make job centers work, provide people with real support, and make work pay.”

Meanwhile, Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats party said Sunak’s plans marked “a desperate speech from a Prime Minister mired in sleaze and scandal,” the Guardian reported per PA Media. He added that Sunak is “attempting to blame the British people for his own government’s failures on the economy and the NHS, and it simply won’t wash.”

Salman Rushdie warns young people against forgetting value of free speech

Author also discusses prospect of second Trump presidency and writing about his stabbing in launch event for his book Knife

Salman Rushdie has warned young people against forgetting the value of free speech and discussed the “very big and negative” impact of a second Trump presidency in a rare public appearance since his stabbing.

The Indian-born British-American author of books including the Satanic Verses and Midnight’s Children also discussed the attack in 2022 that left him blind in one eye during a Q&A at an English PEN event at the Southbank Centre .

“I have a very old-fashioned view about [free speech],” said Rushdie, appearing by video from his home in New York to mark the launch of his new memoir, Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder . “The defence of free expression begins at the point at which somebody says something you don’t like.

“It’s a very simple thing, but it’s being forgotten. That is what’s enshrined in the first amendment … In the US, you feel there’s a younger generation that’s kind of forgetting the value of that. Often, for reasons they would believe to be virtuous, they’re prepared to suppress kinds of speech with which they don’t sympathise. It’s a slippery slope. And look out, because the person slipping down that slope could be you.”

Rushdie said academia in America was “in serious trouble … because of colossal political divisions. And everybody is so angry that it seems very difficult to find a common place.”

The Booker-prize-winning author, whose books have been translated into more than 40 languages, discussed the prospect of a second Trump presidency with the author and critic Erica Wagner and encouraged young people in the US to “not make the mistake of not voting”.

He said: “The impact would be very big and negative. He’d be worse a second time around, because he’d be unleashed and vengeful. All he talks about is revenge. And that’s a bad policy platform, that you want to be president to deal revenge against your enemies.

“In New York, people had got the point of Donald Trump long before he ever tried to run for office. Everybody knew that he was a buffoon and a liar. And unfortunately, America had to find out the hard way. I just hope they don’t fall for it again.”

Rushdie was about to give a talk at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state on 12 August 2022 when a man rushed on stage and stabbed him about 10 times. “I saw the man in black running toward me down the right-hand side of the seating area,” he recalls in his new book . The writer was hospitalised for six weeks.

On Sunday, he said he hadn’t been able to think about writing for six months, but then it struck him that it would be “ludicrous” to write about anything else.

He described the difficulty of penning the first chapter, “in which I have to describe in some detail the exact nature of the attack. It was very hard to do.”

Knife, the writer said, was the “only book I’ve ever written with the help of a therapist. It gave me back control of the narrative. Instead of being a man lying on the stage with a pool of blood, I’m a man writing a book about a man live on stage with a pool of blood. That felt good.”

Rushdie also spoke about the postponement of the trial of his attacker, Hadi Matar . He said Matar’s not-guilty plea was “an absurdity” and that he would testify at any future trial. “It doesn’t bother me to be in the courtroom with him. It should bother him.”

In Knife, Matar is not named, but referred to as “the A”. Rushdie said he was inspired by a Margaret Thatcher line about “wanting to deny the terrorists what she called the oxygen of publicity. That phrase stuck in my head. I thought, ‘This guy had his 27 seconds of fame. And now he should go back to being nobody.’

“I use this initial A because I thought there were many things he was: a would-be assassin, an assailant, an adversary … an ass.”

However, Rushdie said, “the most interesting” part of the book to write was the 30 pages of imagined dialogue between him and his attacker.

“I actually wanted to meet him and ask him some questions. Then I read about this incident where Samuel Beckett was the victim of a knife attack in Paris by a pimp. He went to the man’s trial, and at the end of it said to him: ‘Why did you do it?’ And the only thing the man said was: ‘I don’t know, I’m sorry.’ I thought: if I actually were to meet this guy, I would get some banality.”

So Rushdie decided it would “be better to try to imagine myself” into the head of a person who chose to attack a stranger despite reading “no more than two pages of something I’d written”.

‘There is in my mind an absence in his story,” he said. “This is somebody who was 24 years old. He must have known that he was going to be wrecking his life as well as mine, and yet he was willing to commit murder. He’s somebody with no previous criminal record and not on any kind of terrorism watch list. Just a kid in Fairview, New Jersey. And to go from that to murder is a very big jump.”
