What is Range Rover’s Autobiography trim?

October 14, 2015 by carwow staff

' class=

The Range Rover has been one of the ultimate expressions of luxury motoring ever since the first model was released back in 1970. Now in its fourth generation, it competes with the finest executive saloons, offering a comfy ride, and smooth, refined power from a selection of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines.

Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available in several different trim levels, one of which is Autobiography. So what does it offer, and where does it fit into each respective range?

Put either the Range Rover or the Range Rover Sport in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.

There are three distinct trim levels for the Range Rover – Vogue, Vogue SE and Autobiography. The Sport is available in HSE, Autobiography or ultra-sporty SVR variants. The Vogue is overflowing with advanced in-car tech, fine materials and a huge selection of exterior colours and alloy wheel designs.

The Autobiography, however, adds numerous standard features which are optional further down the range. Those looking for a more accommodating rear seat experience can opt for the Autobiography Long Wheelbase (LWB) for an additional £7,400. For an extra £9,050 on top of the cost of the Vogue SE, the Autobiography gains:

Semi-aniline leather upholstery –  while many car interiors feature leather coated with a pigment to colour its surface, aniline leather uses soluble dyes that soak into the hide. This lends the surface a softer, more natural finish, and reveals the natural grain of the leather more prominently.

Winged headrests –  These soft, pillow-like headrests are electrically adjustable, and can wrap around the back of your head for the ultimate in squishy splendour.

Four zone climate control –  allows each passenger to individually adjust the temperature settings. In lesser models a three-zone system is fitted, forcing the rear seat passengers to agree on one temperature.

Illuminated tread plates –  upon opening the doors, occupants are treated to aluminium-trimmed door sills, with glowing “Autobiography” script.

Surround camera system –  a series of cameras allow the central screen to display a bird’s-eye view of the car to the driver – ideal for parking or navigating through tight spaces.

On-board WiFi –  allowing users to surf the web while on the move.

Remote pack heat with timed climate –  the car can be pre-heated or chilled, based on a timer system. It can be set to perform the process weekly, or as a single event up to 16 days in advance.

Rear seat entertainment –  Includes two 10.2-inch screens mounted to the back of the front seats, two pairs of headphones, a remote control and additional 12V and USB ports. This is fitted as standard to the LWB, and is optional for the regular Autobiography.

Still not plush enough?

Beyond the standard Autobiography is the SVAutobiography. Often defined by its two-tone paint finish, it adds further luxurious features and customisation options, and is positioned to take on ultra-high end SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga . It’s priced from approximately £150,000.

Range rover sport autobiography p510e review: straight six muscle with phev efficiency.

Ahead of a fully electric Range Rover due to arrive in 2024, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is a hugely impressive plug-in hybrid stop-gap.

We've already seen a new Range Rover this year and it's been closely followed by this, the Range Rover Sport, with a range of variations on the theme to choose from. For example, there's the full-fat Range Rover Sport First Edition P530, with its 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine. Alternatively, pick a mild hybrid petrol or diesel. On the other hand, a much more interesting way to go is in the direction of the extended range plug-in hybrids, in the shape of the P440e or P510e.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is the car you see here, and it's slightly more powerful than the P440e, though both models feature an excellent 3-litre, straight six engine. It's a perfect alternative to the thirstier V8 and performance feels on a par, or perhaps even smoother than the bigger lump. Add in the usual Range Rover refinements, both on the outside and the inside, along with premium Autobiography trim-level finishing touches and you've got a fantastic bit of kit, albeit for around £154k. Prices start from £114,680 however.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e looks a treat in Varesine Blue, but it's the enormous 23-inch wheels that add an extra touch of flair to the exterior of the SUV. At the front it's those digital LED headlights that really help it stand out from the crowd, but overall the design lines are quite lean and reassuringly mean. There's definitely a brooding vibe going on with this car, especially in the darker colours.

Our quick take

If you’re keen to curtail your petrol costs the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is an excellent bet in advance of a fully electric model come 2024. The whole package works to great effect, with that seamless switching from EV to straight-six power happening, almost without you noticing. All-wheel-steering, active roll control and adaptive air suspension delivers a ride that's graceful but actually pretty good through the corners too. Around town, despite the nigh-on 5-metre length of the Sport, the SUV feels agile and easy to manage.

On the off chance you get to go off-road there are even more treats in-store, thanks to the well-proven tech settings that can be fine-tuned to tackle any kind of terrain. If you're too busy to bother, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e will just carry on regardless anyway, meaning you can be as involved with the car’s setup as you want to be. Either way, you'll arrive fully rested and relaxed, thanks to comfort and trim levels that are as good as anything else in this class.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e - 4.0 / 5

Design and spec.

As you'd expect from such a sizeable SUV, it's easy to get in and out of thanks to chunky doors. However, if you've got the electronic air suspension hiked up following an off-road session it turns out to be further to the ground than you might be expecting.

The Range Rover designers have done an excellent job with the current range of colour schemes, both interior and exterior. All of the variants we saw seemed to strike the perfect balance of looking cool without overdoing the showy features. There are some trim flourishes on offer, but they're largely low-key rather than bling.

Climbing up into the Range Rover, the look and feel isn't revolutionary, but it is a fantastic place to sit and pick over the controls. Right in front of the well-appointed steering wheel there's a 13.7-inch digital dash that is nicely laid out and good on the eyes. There's also the Pivi Pro system, which lives in a central 13.1-inch touchscreen. It's well worth acquainting yourself with its inner workings and especially the suite of off-road settings that can be called upon to get you over any number of obstacles, by trimming the ride height and drive settings.

However, the bulk of owners will probably be more concerned about the everyday obvious stuff, such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Being a Range Rover, you can obviously spend as much as you like on the options, and the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e model we drove packed in plenty and then some.

The other highlight is obviously the space you get from a Range Rover and the Sport is no exception as it sits on the new MLA-Flex platform. This delivers lots of space for people in the front and the rear. There are innovative new seat coverings using a blend of 'ultrafabrics' and internal trimmings too, which help to elevate the comfort levels alongside the space considerations. Out back, there's an electrically operated split tailgate that offers easy access to a sizeable 818-litre luggage area.

The example you see here boasted a Raven Blue/Ebony interior colour combination, which is slightly less ostentatious and probably more durable than the white option seen in other Sport models. Anyone actually planning on getting muddy in their Sport is probably wise to stick with the darker shade.

Sublime collection of tech

Everyone knows just how good a Range Rover can be off-road and the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is no exception. In order to assist you in your off-the-beaten-track excursions, however infrequent they may well be, there's a sublime collection of tech to help get the job done. Coordinating the settings is done using the central touchscreen and the selector buttons in the centre console.

At first it seems like there's a lot to take in, but once you've got into the swing of it, setting up the Range Rover to take on rough terrain of any type becomes easy enough. The real benefit when you're doing it is the way you can see how the suspension dynamically adapts via some great graphics on the screen. How much owners will actually use the system remains to be seen, but it's well worth hunting out some muddy lanes to put it through its paces, should you get the chance.

There's Cabin Air Purification Pro too, which aims to help you breathe easier while you can also give your ears a solid workout by cranking up the Meridian Signature Sound system. The seats, meanwhile, feature 20-way electronic adjustment with heating and ventilation as part of the package and you also get all of those other accoutrements like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon voice control and wireless phone charging.

The 3D surround camera turns out to be really useful when you're trying to get into those tight spaces, while a range of driver assist options are helpful if you're a little uneasy about the size of the Range Rover. You even get wade sensing if you're considering taking on a deep puddle or minor flood situation come wintertime. Meanwhile, software-over-the-air updates should help to keep things bang up to date further on down the line.

Driving, range and charging

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e makes a lot of sense if you're the sort of driver that's going to be using your SUV around town, rather than out in the sticks. It still packs plenty of performance, with a 0 to 60mph time of just 5.2 seconds and a 150mph top speed, but the EV part of the package - there's a Hybrid driving mode too - means its able to cope with congestion zone charging obstacles with ease.

Despite its size, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e has a WLTP range of up to 70 miles using battery power alone, thanks to a 38.2kWh battery and 141bhp electric motor combination. On top of that, it can call on geofencing technology that switches the car into full-on EV mode when it gets into an inner city area. You can toggle this option manually too if you prefer and, having tried it on a couple of occasions the system turns out to be pretty handy. Considering most Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e owners are likely to be heading into cities quite frequently, this seems like a very sensible feature.

Driving on fully EV resources, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is, as you'd expect, wonderfully quiet. It's actually really good at getting around less than ideal city streets, something which is helped by the four-wheel steering that is subtle but undeniably useful for getting out of sticky situations.

Hit those bigger out of town roads though and you really start to appreciate just how good the 3-litre, straight six engine is too. It boasts plenty of power and, being mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission, the delivery is silky smooth. In fact, it's a little less erratic than the V8, which offers plenty of grunt, but the delivery doesn't feel quite as linear.

A little bit of wind noise creeps in as you wind up the chunky SUV to legal motorway limits, but aside from that it slips on down the road very nicely indeed. When you need to plug in and recharge there's CCS connectivity, which can get your Rangey back up to 80 percent on chargers up to 50kW in less than an hour. Considering how many owners will be doing the bulk of their runs locally, the up to 70-mile EV range of the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e starts making even more sense.

In advance of a fully electric Range Rover due to arrive in 2024, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography P510e is a hugely impressive plug-in hybrid stop-gap. It can cover up to 70 miles in EV-only mode, offers excellent performance by combining all-electric power with a beefy-but-smooth six cylinder engine and does it all while getting you there in comfort. Plump for the Autobiography model and trim levels are even more sumptuous, while there is a lot of tech on tap and plenty of off-road capability for when, or if, the going ever gets tough.

New Range Rover Sport redefines sporting luxury, combining assertive and instinctive on-road performance with Range Rover refinement, progressive design sophistication and connected convenience. The third-generation model is the most desirable, advanced and dynamically capable yet.

A suite of powerful and efficient(1) powertrains includes six-cylinder extended range Electric Hybrid, a potent new V8 and two mild hybrid six-cylinder gasoline Ingenium engine. Pure-electric propulsion will be introduced in 2024, as Land Rover continues its electrification journey.

The new Range Rover Sport is available in SE, SE Dynamic and Autobiography specifications, with a First Edition available throughout the first year of production featuring a specially curated specification.

“The exceptional New Range Rover Sport sets new standards as the ultimate sporting luxury SUV, building on seventeen years of unique customer appeal,” said, Thierry Bolloré, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover. “It is the latest embodiment of our vision to create the world's most desirable modern luxury vehicles, effortlessly blending new levels of sustainability with the signature qualities that have made Range Rover Sport so popular."

Design in detail

The sophisticated exterior is unmistakably Range Rover Sport with taut surfacing, a dynamic stance and instantly recognizable profile, perfectly accentuated by stealth-like detailing and muscular proportions – giving the impression the vehicle is poised and ready.

Dramatic proportions accentuate the Range Rover Sport vehicle’s distinctive character, with short overhangs, an assertive front-end and steeply raked glazing at the front and back. These distinct elements provide a strong and imposing road presence that communicate power and performance.

The sculpted exterior is detailed with exquisite finishes such as a stealth-like front grille and Premium LED lighting units, which create a unique Daytime Running Light (DRL) signature. The eye-catching designs, the slimmest ever fitted to a Land Rover vehicle, sit above a sculpted, double-aperture lower bumper that incorporates a horizontal bisecting body-color element that creates greater visual width, enhanced by black detailing.

Perfectly honed design elements are echoed at the rear, incorporating a sculpted tailgate with a full-width feature bearing the Range Rover script. Uninterrupted LED light graphics introduce surface LED technology to a production vehicle for the first time, providing a crisp and contemporary look at night that is vivid and consistent when viewed from any angle. A characteristic shoulder line runs the length of the vehicle, accentuated by new lower fender details and the longest spoiler ever fitted to a Range Rover.

The clean lines of the exterior are enhanced by beautifully executed flush glazing and door handles, a hidden waist rail finisher and laser-welded roof for a precise, technical and sophisticated appearance. These design-enabling technologies contribute to excellent aerodynamic performance, with New Range Rover Sport delivering a drag coefficient of just 0.29.

The new Dynamic model brings an even sharper focus to the performance SUV’s purposeful character with unique exterior design elements. Satin Grey alloy wheels are joined by Satin Burnished Copper finishes for the hood louvers and side ingots while the front grill and Range Rover lettering are finished in Matte Graphite Atlas.

With unique front and rear bumpers and bespoke lower cladding finished in body color, the Dynamic delivers the most dramatic interpretation of the Range Rover Sport formula.

“Our latest range Rover Sport embraces fully our modernist approach of vehicle design whilst amplifying its unquestionable sporting and confident character,” said Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover.

New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s reductive design extends to its all-new interior, which features the distinctive Range Rover Command Driving Position, the latest technologies and the finest materials, which combine for a compelling balance of sartorial elegance and visceral desire. The cockpit-like cabin sets the tone for the dynamic driving experience, providing excellent visibility while simultaneously cocooning the driver with a high, sloping center console and intuitive technologies.

Innovative and sustainable material choices include tactile and lightweight Ultrafabrics™ premium textiles finished in attractive new Duo Tone colorways, while a unique textile option that extends to the dashboard and door detailing is also available. Alternatives include luxurious Windsor or soft Semi-Aniline leather options.

These tactile materials seamlessly blend with new Moonlight Chrome interior finishers while elements like the integrated audio speakers, developed with Meridian™ and hidden behind the textile of the rear doors, contribute to the clean, crisp and modern aesthetic.

Engaging on every journey

New Range Rover Sport introduces more advanced chassis technologies than ever before, providing a comprehensive dynamic toolkit for the most engaging and dynamically capable driving experience.

The inherent stiffness and strength of the flexible mixed-metal architecture (MLA-Flex) – which provides up to 35 percent higher torsional stiffness than the previous Range Rover Sport – lays the foundations for this technology. It harmoniously works with a suite of systems governed by the Integrated Chassis Control system – all specially tuned for New Range Rover Sport.

“Land Rover’s pioneering flexible MLA architecture and the latest chassis systems come together to deliver the highest levels of dynamism we’ve ever seen on Range Rover Sport,” said Nick Collins, Executive Director Vehicle Programs, Jaguar Land Rover. “Integrated Chassis Control governs the comprehensive suite of innovations, co-ordinating everything from the latest switchable-volume air suspension system to our Dynamic Response Pro electronic active roll control(2). The result is the most engaging and thrilling Range Rover Sport ever.”

New Dynamic Response Pro, unique to First Edition, works hand-in-hand with the latest generation Dynamic Air Suspension, which introduces switchable-volume air springs for the first time(2).

Dynamic Response Pro helps provide roll control via a 48-volt electronic active roll control system, capable of applying up to 1000 ft-lbs of torque across each axle, for a confidence-inspiring driving experience and new levels of body control and cornering composure(2).

Dynamic Air Suspension is fitted to every New Range Rover Sport and the intelligent system enhances the bandwidth of the suspension. This works by varying the pressure within the chambers (higher pressure provides stiffer damping) to deliver traditional Range Rover comfort with the dynamic handling expected from the Range Rover Sport. To optimize responses, the vehicle monitors the road ahead using eHorizon navigation data to pre-emptively prime for upcoming bends2.

Adaptive Dynamics 2 technology contributes to dynamic capability by continuously controlling the Active Twin Valve Dampers to reduce unwanted body movements. It monitors external factors up to 500 times per second to deliver the ideal responses and, in harmony with the other chassis technologies, delivers the most precise and composed driving dynamics of any Range Rover Sport(2).

New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s cornering agility is taken to a new level with All-Wheel Steering, Torque Vectoring by Braking and the Electronic Active Differential. All-Wheel Steering provides rear-wheel steering of up to 7.3 degrees out of phase with the front wheels to achieve enhanced agility and maneuverability at low speeds, while turning in-phase for enhanced stability at high speeds7. This gives New Range Rover Sport the turning circle of a hatchback and on-road agility of a much smaller car.

The very best of the New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s chassis systems combine in the Stormer Handling Pack, unique to the First Edition, which includes Dynamic Response Pro, All-Wheel Steering, the Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking and Configurable Programs(2). The latter provides the opportunity to personalize the driving modes, tailoring the driving experience both on and off road. All elements of this pack are standard and available only on the First Edition.

All New Range Rover Sport models are fitted with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, which is designed to intuitively anticipate where traction is required, efficiently engaging to help provide the most effective progress in various conditions(2).

Enhancing the off-road performance is Land Rover’s latest Terrain Response® (2) system, which intelligently applies the most appropriate settings for the terrain. New Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control makes its debut on New Range Rover Sport and helps drivers navigate tricky terrain by maintaining steady progress according to the ground conditions. Drivers can select one of four comfort settings and the system intelligently adjusts the speed accordingly, allowing the driver to focus on steering(2).

Epitome of sporting luxury

New Range Rover Sport makes every journey an event. It can be honed to be as dynamically engaging as the driver desires, while offering enhanced levels of refinement and comfort. This ability to combine dual characters, offering heightened luxury and driver-focused engagement, is made possible by a comprehensive set of technologies and features.

Providing the perfect foundation for an engaging and supportive journey are 22-way adjustable, heated and ventilated electric memory front seats with massage function and winged headrests. The flagship seats provide the ultimate support for longer journeys and involving drives on winding roads, while rear passengers benefit from ergonomically optimized seat geometry, with a .8 inch increase in legroom and .3 inch greater knee clearance, for greater comfort and support.

Next-generation Cabin Air Purification Pro is available to create and maintain the perfect driving environment. It combines PM2.5 filtration and nanoeTM X technology to significantly reduce odors, bacteria and allergens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A second nanoeTM X device is fitted to the second row to provide consistent air quality throughout the cabin. An advanced CO2 Management function allows owners to purify the cabin before a journey, or while they are driving – ensuring increased alertness for every drive, and enhanced wellbeing for all occupants.

Powerful Meridian audio systems are available, and the Meridian Signature Sound System is the most advanced audio system ever fitted to a Range Rover Sport. It presents an enveloping sound experience using 29 speakers, a new subwoofer and up to 1,430W of amplifier power – including four headrest speakers that enable those travelling in the four main seats of the vehicle to experience personal sound zones.

Next generation Active Noise Cancellation plays its part here, reducing the effect of road and tire noise entering the cabin for ultimate cabin refinement or to allow occupants to enjoy the undiluted soundtrack provided by New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s powertrain. This experience is heightened when the vehicle is in the Dynamic driving mode(2), when the advanced system brings the engine sounds to the fore. In normal driving, microphones and accelerometers inside each wheel arch constantly monitor the sounds passing into the vehicle, while digital processors calculate the level of noise-cancelling sound required to filter this from the cabin – much like a pair of high-end headphones.

Instinctive convenience contributes to the sense of modern luxury and New Range Rover features Deployable Door Handles with Proximity Sensing, Soft Door Close and Approach Unlock, for effortless entry to the vehicle while preserving the clean lines of the exterior. Automated Walkaway Lock helps ensure security.

Seamless technology

Land Rover’s powerful Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0) supports an ecosystem of seamless connected technologies, including Software Over The Air (SOTA). The clever technology provides remote updates for 63 electronic modules, helping ensure New Range Rover Sport remains at the cutting edge of innovation, modern technology and services throughout its life.

“Living with the New Range Rover Sport couldn’t be easier thanks to its suite of connected technologies. Our award-winning Pivi Pro(3) infotainment is at the heart of the experience and its haptic, curved floating touchscreen provides intuitive control of the vehicle systems,” Alex Heslop, Director of Electrical Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover. “To help drivers maintain their focus, embedded Amazon Alexa(8) voice AI is on hand, so customers can keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel while doing anything from setting the navigation and placing calls to selecting media sources.”

The award-winning Pivi Pro infotainment features a high resolution floating 13.1-inch curved touchscreen positioned at the center of the modernist dashboard. Controlling everything from navigation to media and vehicle settings, it learns the user’s habits and intelligently personalizes the onboard experience, becoming a truly intuitive personal assistant3.

Pivi Pro features an easy-to-use interface with a home screen that can be personalized to include most frequently used functions, while the majority of features are accessed within just two taps of the main screen. Haptic feedback enhances the system by providing positive feedback to the operator’s inputs, reducing the need for the driver to take their eyes off the road to confirm their selection. The Pivi Pro screen is complemented by a 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, with high-definition graphics that echo the main Pivi system, and a reconfigurable layout so drivers can see the information that’s most important to them(3).

Amazon Alexa(8) brings a new level of convenience, providing the ability to control various settings and features using natural voice commands while reducing the potential for distraction. Alexa is embedded in Pivi Pro and can simply be activated by saying “Alexa” or tapping the Alexa button on the touchscreen. The clever voice AI even integrates the use of Alexa devices in the home via the Land Rover smartphone app and Remote Skills.

Alexa works without a smartphone – all owners need to do is log in via their Amazon account for the vehicle’s built-in eSIMs to provide connectivity. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Wireless Android Auto™ are both fitted as standard5, meaning smartphones can be tucked out of the way on the dedicated 15W Wireless Device Charger, beneath the Pivi screen, without the need for trailing wires.

New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s dynamic performance and enhanced refinement is supported by the latest driver focused Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)(2). All models are fitted with Emergency Braking(9), 3D Surround Camera, including front and rear parking sensors, Wade Sensing(10), ClearSight Ground View(11) and Maneuvering Lights – Cruise Control, Driver Condition Monitor, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Electrified performance

A comprehensive line-up of electrified powertrains deliver customary Range Rover Sport performance. The North American range includes an extended Electric Hybrid, two six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engines featuring mild hybrid technology and an all-new V8 Twin Turbo. In 2024, the New Range Rover Sport line-up will evolve with the addition of a fully electric model.

The new P440e Electric Hybrid is engineered to meet the demands of drivers looking for a high-performance drive, impressive efficiency and an estimated range of 48 miles(1). It seamlessly blends Land Rover’s 3.0 liter six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine with a powerful 105kW electric motor and 31.8 kWh battery, producing a total system output of 434hp. It provides effortless acceleration and refinement, completing 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds(7).

Alternatively, the new flagship V8 Twin Turbo produces 523HP for the most exhilarating Range Rover Sport character, accelerating from 0-60mph in just 4.3 seconds(7) with Dynamic Launch engaged and bringing an added level of visceral excitement to the line-up.

The comprehensive choice of powertrains includes powerful P360 and P400 mild-hybrid straight six Ingenium gas mild-hybrid engines.

Peerless capability

New Range Rover Sport is the most dynamically capable version of Land Rover’s luxury performance SUV ever, and the most competent away from paved roads. Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) integrates with the latest all-terrain innovations and technologies to ensure its breadth of dynamic capability(2).

“New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s advanced chassis dynamics feed into its immense capability away from the tarmac, utilizing its hardware and software to full effect.,” Rory O’Murchu, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar Land Rover. “It is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature our new Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, which has been engineered to help drivers focus on steering the vehicle by providing consistent and comfortable progress across rough terrain(2).”

Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control is an evolution of All-Terrain Progress Control and allows the driver to set the desired speed and comfort level, from a choice of four settings, over rough surfaces. It is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature this capability, bringing enhanced off-road performance to the line-up by allowing the driver to focus solely on steering the vehicle across challenging terrain(2).

Terrain Response®(20 automatically detects the surface and terrain to adapt the chassis to best deal with the situation, prompting and informing the driver via the Pivi Pro touchscreen. It works in harmony with the comprehensive chassis systems to make the most effective progress off-road(2).

New Range Rover Sport will be exclusively produced at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the UK alongside New Range Rover, on a state-of-the-art production line housed in the same building used to produce early Series Land Rovers vehicles. The historic location is the spiritual home of Land Rover and its reimagining as a new, ultra-modern center for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport production epitomizes the way the company protects and celebrates its unique heritage.

review: range rover sport autobiography unites sport, utility and luxury

Range rover sport autobiography review.

As the world’s most popular car category, it is easy to forget our day-to-day SUV really stand for Sports Utility Vehicle. This class is built to go anywhere and do anything, quickly and effortlessly – or even go above and beyond, as stamped by Land Rover. In a nod to its origins, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography emphatically and unashamedly puts the sportiness back into SUV, as discovered by designboom on a road trip to North Wales.

all images © designboom unless stated

puts sport back into sports utility vehicle

Acclaimed as the most dynamic model yet, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography adds even more power to its renowned luxury performance. An Ingenium 3.0-liter 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged petrol PHEV hybrid boosts its exhilarating statistics: its 8-speed automatic transmission, 510HP, and 700Nm of torque accelerates the car from 0-60mph in 5.3-seconds and up to a maximum of 150 mph (242 km/h). Its power is effortless, gliding past others on motorways and powering along uphill climbs in Snowdonia with just a tap on the throttle. The Autobiography badge is truly a mark of distinction.

Several different driving modes allow the driver to tailor performance to conditions or mood, switching from eco or comfort on long highways to dynamic on country passes when needed. The key for the smooth performance, though, is the handling pack that combines All-Wheel Steering and Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring. Dynamic Air Suspension introduces switchable volume air springs – a Range Rover first – with twin-valve active dampers for ultimate agility, control and composure at all speeds and all environments.

luxury design, inside and out

Its dynamic luxury is not just felt in its performance. Like every model from Range Rover, all aspects have been carefully designed by Gerry McGovern and his creative team. A muscular stance and taut surfaces personifies the power and agility of the machine within, but beyond its instantly recognizeable profile and proportions – in Giola Green color on our drive – its modern details establish a more defined, athletic character. Sportiness is reflected in stealth-like front grille, digital LED lighting, and double-aperture lower bumper. The most notable feature is the sculpted, uninterrupted tailgate, accentuated with LED graphics. A shoulder line connects the two ends, so smooth in finish that even the door handles are hidden flush with the body.

The same dynamic luxury continues in the interior of the car. Sculpted seats are equipped with massage and heating features, both nice perks in windy, wet North Wales. The cockpit is widened by the full-width console, only disrupted in the center by a curved touchscreen that slopes towards the passengers. Sustainable, lightweight fabrics in Light Cloud and Ebony options line the console and doors, creating a two-tone contrast with the natural black veneer dashboard and screens.

Moving towards the back seats, the cabin opens up with a near-full-length skylight, flooding the interior with natural light and giving all passengers a deep connection to the outdoors. The powerful Meridian Sound System pushes the signature sound around the cabin, said to be the most powerful system ever fitted to a Range Rover Sport. 29 speakers, a subwoofer and 1,430W of amplifier power creates a curated cocoon of entertainment for passengers that is only disrupted by the exhaust in the dynamic driving mode. Further rearwards, the loadspace in the boot hits the utility criteria at the plentiful 647-liter number.

Proved in North Wales, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography joyously and luxuriously rebalances sportiness and utility. From its spacious loadspace to its refined exterior design and interior comforts, the SUV never forgets its exhilarating driving experience first of all.

Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic

what is an autobiography range rover sport

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic is the most luxurious Range Rover Sport - only the Range Rover SVR is more expensive. It rivals the Porsche Cayenne , BMW X5 and the Mercedes ML-Class SUVs.

The Range Rover Autobiography Dynamic is available with three diesels and one petrol engines. The choice of diesels comprise a 225 3.0-litre engines, and a 339bhp 4.4-litre V8 - although the latter provides more ability to pull loads more easily. The sole petrol choice is a 510bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8. There's also a 3.0-litre diesel hybrid which is the cheapest to run, but not by much.

Running costs for the 3.0-litre diesel are not too bad for a big SUV, averaging 40mpg. The 4.4-litre V8 diesel manages 32.5mpg while the most expensive supercharged V8 petrol can only manage 22.1mpg. Up to 44mpg should be possible from the hybrid.

The top-of-the-range Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic comes very well equipped. Standard specification includes huge 21-inch alloy wheels, a full-size panoramic sliding roof, sat nav, leather seats, xenon headlamps, electrically-folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel, electric seats and a premium sound system. There’s also automatic headlamps and wipers, tyre pressure monitors, keyless entry, parking sensors and adaptive cruise control (which maintains a safe distance between you and the car in front).

Good points

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography blends a supple ride with good handling. It’s not quite as fun to drive as a Porsche Cayenne, but it’s a lot more comfortable. All three engines are quiet yet powerful and inside, the Range Rover Sport has a well-built and luxurious interior. It’s also very quiet inside and feels upmarket, stylish and expensive. On the road, despite its size, the Range Rover corners far better than you think, with less roll. Off road it is as capable as the full-size Range Rover – and is well-deserving of the Land Rover badge.

Some of the Range Rover Sport’s rivals (like the BMW X5). And while the interior is spacious, the optional pair of third-row rear seats are only suitable for kids. The Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic is well equipped but be careful when you’re ordering your car new. It’s very tempting to get carried away personalising your car and it doesn’t take long before you’ve added almost £10,000 to its already hefty list price.

What you get

  • Alloy wheels
  • Folding rear seats
  • Panoramic roof
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Full leather seats
  • Automatic wipers

Recommended optional extras

  • Off road pack
  • Panoramic roof blinds
  • Audio upgrade

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic with the SDV6 diesel engine offers the best blend of performance and reasonable running costs.

Land Rover was making SUVs before they were even called SUVs.

Range Rovers were ferrying families around in prestigious four-wheel drive comfort decades before Audi , BMW or Mercedes-Benz even thought of doing it, too.

So, even with all its rivals these days, how well does a Range Rover do modern family duties?

Well the Range Rover Autobiography came to live with my little family of four for a week. We had the seven-seater long-wheelbase version with the twin-turbo petrol V8 engine , and this is what we discovered…

Breadth of capability. That’s the key phrase the engineers, public relations managers and even the support crew keep using when discussing the all-new Range Rover Sport SV. And with good reason.

There aren’t too many SUVs on the market that can match it for its bandwidth. Within the space of a few hours at the recent launch in Portugal, we hit 233km/h down the front straight at the Portimao race track, carved through country back roads and then drove down a muddy track, across a small creek and then conquered an off-road obstacle course.

Most of its rivals can do some of those things, but none can do all of them.

Range Rovers have always had a Swiss Army knife element to their appeal, but the Sport SV adds a new dimension with its sheer dynamic ability.

The company confidently calls it its most dynamic model yet, which isn’t saying much for a brand that’s history is focused on off-road performance rather than worrying too much about paved roads.

But not only is it clearly the most dynamic Range Rover ever, it’s also now a clear front-runner in the highly-competitive performance SUV market, capable of holding its own against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT , Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX .

Deep dive comparison

The Range Rover Autobiography long wheelbase is an outstanding SUV that is not just beautiful to drive but makes family practicality a priority, too,

The price is reasonable relative to the competition, the features list is long and complementary servicing offers peace of mind.

If you don’t need the third row, I’d consider the standard wheelbase Autobiography even if it does reduce legroom, there’s still plenty of space.

My son stopped short of giving the Range Rover Autobiography full marks "because there are no massaging seats in the second row".

Range Rover proudly calls it its “most dynamic” model ever, and based on our first experience that’s most definitely true. Its ability to be genuinely exciting to drive on a race track is nothing short of remarkable for a brand whose history is all about off-road prowess.

On the road it shines just as brightly, with its potent engine and state-of-the-art suspension system working in unison to make for a stunningly dynamic large and luxurious SUV. And then, if you need to cut across a field or scramble up a slippery hill, it will do that too.

Range Rover’s claims of ‘breadth of capability’ is apt but arguably an understatement. I’d stop short of calling the Sport SV the obvious class-leader in the high-end, high-performance SUV market because it’s up against some seriously impressive rivals, but the Range Rover offers a broader range of ability than any of its competitors.

Note: CarsGuide attended this event as a guest of the manufacturer, with travel, accommodation and meals provided.

This fifth-generation Range Rover debuted in 2021 and despite its smooth, modern styling this SUV retains the familiar traditional Range Rover look with the short squared bonnet, flat roofline and tall windows.

Let’s talk about the wheelbase, because it has a huge impact on passenger space.

We had the long wheelbase which is 3197mm between the front and rear wheels - that’s 200mm more than the standard wheelbase.

Just look at those stretched rear doors in the photos - this is a go-anywhere limousine, or go-anywhere daycare centre in my case.

The overall length of the long wheelbase Range Rover is 5252mm. That’s big, but the design of this SUV doesn’t make it appear enormous.

What I don't like are the retractable door handles. They take a while to pop out and they look and feel cheap. Land Rover has used these on its other SUVs and if I had time I’d pen a letter asking the company to please stop. I’m sincerely hoping this review will do the same thing. I await your response JLR.

I think the tail-lights are pure genius. The pencil thin design is such a brave move away from the norm where brands are going over the top with LED lighting, and the simplicity is refreshing.

Inside, a traditional-looking Range Rover cabin awaits you with the flat dashboard, the low window sills contrasted by super modern touches like the displays and fully digital dials.

It’s sumptuous, luxurious, but not over the top. Again some people are looking for bling and gimmicks, but you won’t find them here - and I like that. This interior feels solid and substantial, but plush.

Range Rover is a brand synonymous with big, imposing and off-road capable SUVs , not dynamic and sporty vehicles. But in recent years the Evoque and Velar have added a new layer of style and a sleekness to the brand’s reputation.

The latest generation Sport is still a big and imposing two-tonne SUV, but it’s also definitely sportier to look at and the SV changes only add to that.

It only takes a moment looking at it and it’s clear this is an SUV that means business. The 23-inch wheels fill out the guards, the air-suspension can lower the body to the ground and the aerodynamic package, including the front splitter, make for a purposeful look.

The carbon-fibre bonnet can be finished with the centre section exposed, showing off the weave of the fibres, which is a nice touch, although fake vents on the bonnet and front fenders are a bit disappointing.

Practicality

Range Rovers have been a family favourite for decades and they’ve been doing school runs and trips away long before other brands even thought about producing SUVs for families.

So what you’re buying is Land Rover’s decades of knowing how to make a family SUV and you can tell by little things such as, how wide the doors open, how easy it is to get in and out of (even for little kids), the flat floor, the good visibility (thanks to low window sills), and then there’s the space and cabin storage. Stuff other brands seem to be still working out.

The second row seats in the Autobiography have electric sun shades, dual-zone climate control and the window seats are power adjustable and heated.

My eight-year old couldn’t resist playing with his electric sunshade and the seat adjustment, but fortunately the driver has an override switch which let me turn off his 'seat privileges’ as he called it.

Being the long wheelbase means the rear doors are long and heavy. So while the eight-year old could open them, he had trouble closing them.

The long wheelbase offers unrivalled legroom in the back and that meant my wife and I could put our own seats back further for our own comfort -even with a baby seat behind us.

Enormous door pockets, a giant centre console storage area, cupholders in all three rows, USB ports, wireless phone charging and in our case an optional domestic power outlet ($130) made this a comfortable, roomy, well equipped cabin.

Sure, the third row isn’t exactly spacious, but I’ve never met one that is.

The intelligent seat folding system is remarkable. From the boot or side doors you can electronically adjust the second and third rows - either to raise them or lower them so they are flat for storage.

With all seats in place there is 229 litres of cargo space still left in the boot, but with those back seats folded flat you have 713 litres of capacity - and that’s just up to the cargo cover.

The Range Rover Autobiography has air suspension and this means the SUV can lower itself to an 'Access' height to make it even easier to get in and out.

There are two stand-out features in the cabin, beyond the standard high-level of luxury you expect from a Range Rover Sport.

The first is the SV-specific steering wheel with illuminated paddles, which feels solid in your hands. But the second is by far the most interesting, the so-called Body and Soul Seats (BASS), which Range Rover has developed in conjunction with Coventry University.

Available with either genuine leather or ‘ultra fabric’ and a 3D-print knit trim, the seats look great on the outside but it’s what’s inside them that’s special.

There are four audio transducers integrated into the seat back which can vibrate to the beat of whatever audio track you’re listening to. The system uses AI to detect the lower frequencies and then work out which beats to transmit.

This is technology used by musicians, Coldplay’s Chris Martin reportedly wears transducers integrated into a vest when he performs, but Range Rover is confident it will add to the ownership experience.

It’s certainly an interesting technology and a demonstration across different music genres highlights the way the system adapts to individual songs, but it’s hard not to feel like this is more of a gimmick than something an owner will use every day.

If you don’t like listening to music with it, the Body and Soul Seats also work with a ‘Wellness’ setting that features six audio pieces (designed by Coventry University musicians) - calm, soothe, serene, cool, tonic and invigorate.

It’s probably what you need to help settle your heart rate after you unleash the full performance potential of the Sport SV.

In the back seat there’s none of this technology but they do feature heating and ventilation as well as power recline functions. There’s also four-zone climate control, so every occupant can be comfortable.

Price and features

The Autobiography sits high in the Range Rover line-up and only the SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) models command higher prices.

Our Range Rover Autobiography was the long-wheelbase with the twin-turbo petrol V8 engine and has a list price of $312,193 .

The standard features include retractable door handles with a proximity key, the LED headlights and tail-lights, a power tailgate and the panoramic sunroof.

Inside, 'Caraway' perforated semi-aniline leather seats are standard, too. So is a 13.1-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , plus sat nav . There’s a fully digital driver display, a head-up display, wireless phone charging , and a Meridian 'Signature' sound system.

Four-zone climate control is standard and will keep the kids comfortable in the back, while the sun shades will project them from that giant fireball in the sky.

Up front there are heated and cooled seats which also massage, while the outboard rear seats are heated and power adjustable.

Our Autobiography was the seven-seater and it’s only about $1600 more than the five-seat version.

Ours had a few options fitted - there are the 23-inch wheels , the standard alloys are 22-inch, there’s also the black contrasting roof and the privacy glass which is so dark it’s almost impossible to look in.

All up the total list price for ours came to $318,603.

To be blunt, the Range Rover Sport SV is one of those vehicles that if you have to ask, you can’t afford. Particularly in this case, as the model has launched in a single specification level, the Sport SV Edition One, which is priced from $360,800, plus on-road costs .

That puts it into the same financial category as the likes of the Aston Martin DBX ($356,512), Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe ($364,700) and Lamborghini Urus ($409,744) - especially when we discuss some of the pricier options.

For that price the Sport SV Edition One comes with exclusive branding on the front splitter, centre console, treadplates and puddle lamps as well as a raft of standard features likely to carry-over to the 2025 model year version.

These include carbon-fibre badges, forged 23-inch alloy wheels , digital LED headlights , a carbon-fibre bonnet, 16-way electronically adjustable front seats, Meridian 'Signature' sound system, 13.1-inch multimedia touchscreen , Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and newly developed ‘Body and Soul Seats’ (more on those later).

But if you’re feeling really sporty, you can upgrade your Sport SV with lightweight carbon fibre wheels and carbon ceramic brakes.

These will cost you a staggering $16,130 and $13,500, respectively, but the wheels measure 23-inches and are the largest fitted to a production car (and are also Australian-made by Carbon Revolution in Geelong).

Unfortunately, for now at least, this is all a moot point because Range Rover Australia has already invited and sold all examples of the Sport SV Edition One, so you'll need to be patient and wait until at least 2025 to have the option to buy one.

Under the bonnet

The 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 is a perfect match for the Range Rover Autobiography.

There’s enormous power at 390kW and a colossal 750Nm of torque , but it’s delivered so smoothly and without sounding like Armageddon is beginning.

You might here the engine referred to as the P530. That signifies it’s petrol and makes about 530 horsepower .

All that grunt means that despite weighing more than 2.7 tonnes , this SUV can hurl itself from a stand still to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

An eight-speed automatic sends the drive to all four wheels. And making this SUV incredibly capable off-road is an excellent four-wheel drive system with a low range gear, plus a maximum ground clearance (thanks to the adjustable air suspension) of 283mm and a wading depth of up to 900mm.

There is a six-cylinder diesel , but if you decide on that instead of the V8 then it's all over between you and me. That’s how good this V8 is.

Sadly the wonderfully evocative supercharged V8 engine from the previous generation Range Rover Sport SVR is gone.

But, thankfully, in its place is a more powerful engine that’s exclusive to the Sport SV in the Jaguar Land Rover family.

It’s a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance , which is actually built by BMW and based on the same powertrain as you’ll find in the M5 , albeit with some specific Range Rover elements for more off-road capability.

It’s also more powerful than the old supercharged V8, making an impressive 467kW of power and 750Nm of torque , which is a 44kW and 50Nm improvement over the old engine.

It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission , again with a specific SV calibration for improved performance.

And, of course, being a Land Rover, it’s also got a four-wheel drive system with full off-road systems as well as an active locking differential .

Now, you’re going to use a lot of fuel . But that’s okay because this will probably be your last petrol car and the next one will be electric so let’s go out with a bang - last drinks at the petrol bar! Land Rover says you’ll use 11.8L/100km.

After a week of punishing my Range Rover with school drop offs, shopping centre car parks, hilly suburbs, motorways and rural roads the petrol pump told me we’d used 19.8L/100km.

I’m not shocked by that consumption. This is a 2.7 tonne all-wheel drive twin-turbo V8 SUV that was almost always ferrying around four people with a pram, garden supplies and shopping in bumper to bumper traffic. A real world fuel test.

There is that six-cylinder diesel and a hybrid version of the Range Rover, but this V8 engine suits the character of the SUV perfectly - anything else and it’s like eating reduced fat ice cream.

Despite all the extra power, thanks to the mild-hybrid system it’s more fuel efficient and produces less emissions than the old 5.0-litre V8.

Still, it’s all relative, and as you’d expect from a twin-turbo V8 SUV it’s still thirsty and uses 11.7-12.5-litres per 100km , based on European specifications.

The mild hybrid system uses a crank-integrated starter generator instead of a conventional alternator, providing a boost of up to 20kW and 175Nm of electrical power when needed, with the energy captured during braking and stored in a 48-volt lithium-ion battery .

Driving the V8-powered, long-wheelbase, 2.7-tonne, Range Rover Autobiography is a lot easier than it sounds. Really, it’s the Range Rover’s height above sea level which will strike you first.

You’ll lord it over other cars. The length doesn’t come into it - even for parking because the visibility is so good, the steering is so light and the engine is civilised and smooth.

This is truly an easy and enjoyable SUV to drive, with power and performance whenever you need it.

There are several drive modes from a 'Dynamic' sporty one, which makes the engine more responsive and suspension firmer, to off-road settings.

Most of the time I left the Range Rover in 'Comfort' mode for the softest ride, but with 530 horsepower lurking in the background ready to jump out and eat up hills and overtaking.

The front seats are wide, comfortable and supportive even after hours of driving.

Before driving the Sport SV you need to understand its highly complex suspension system that allows it to be so dynamically capable. Range Rover calls it a '6D Dynamic' system, because it can control the car left and right, up and down and corner to corner.

To achieve this the system uses a combination of hydraulic interlinked dampers, height-adjustable air springs and pitch control, which makes it a semi-active suspension set-up similar to the set-up Formula 1 race cars used to boast.

This allows the Sport SV to sit between 10-25mm lower than the other Sport models and with its clever suspension can actually sit flatter in the corner with less pitch and roll - which is the traditional enemy of high-riding SUVs when it comes to handling.

But the suspension is only part of the story, with the intelligent all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring and the active locking rear diff all combining to produce an SUV with incredibly impressive dynamic capability.

Put simply, there’s never been a Range Rover that deserved to be driven on a racetrack. The Sport SV changes that, and thankfully the company let us loose on the challenging Portimao circuit in Portugal to put the SV through its paces.

Range Rover management was quick to stress it doesn’t expect the Sport SV to be a race track regular for its owners, but driving it on track did highlight the extreme potential it offers.

With such a powerful engine it should come as no surprise that the Sport SV hauled down the straight, hitting 233km/h at the end of the long front straight, but with speed still rising which suggests its 290km/h claimed top speed is accurate.

Even from those speeds and with 2560kg of SUV to slow down, with the carbon ceramic brakes it was no trouble whatsoever. Instead the braking was strong and consistent across multiple laps.

The steering is the particular highlight, with the rear-wheel steering helping to turn the Sport SV sharper and more quickly than a big SUV like this should.

But while it impressed on the circuit, we also experienced it on some great winding rural roads across Portugal and this is where it shone even more brightly.

This is an SUV that you’ll genuinely enjoy driving with its ability to carve through corners and blast down anything resembling straight road.

But to ensure it lives up to the Land Rover badge on the front, we also drove it off-road. Nothing too serious at first, just muddy ruts, across some water and over some rocks.

But then we were guided through a course that showed off its articulation potential, which is far greater than the average owner will ever need.

However, to achieve this Range Rover removed the carbon-fibre front splitter, so it’s not the most off-road friendly model the brand offers.

The Range Rover was given the maximum five-star ANCAP rating when it was tested in 2022.

For second-row child occupant protection the Range Rover scored a high 86 per cent in frontal and side impacts.

Standard safety tech includes AEB (junction and forward) with cyclists and pedestrian detection, there’s blind-spot warning , lane keeping assistance and rear cross-traffic alert, but no rear AEB.

For child seats there are ISOFIX mounts in the second row, and top tether anchor points in the second row and third rows.

Along with an entire suite of airbags it’s good to see a centre airbag up front and also head-covering curtain airbags all three rows.

The Sport SV comes generously equipped with safety gear, as you’d expect at this price point. There’s all the usual passive safety, including airbag coverage for all occupants, and plenty of active safety including adaptive cruise control with steering assist, remote park assist and 3D surround cameras - which are used for off-roading as well as parking.

As with the rest of the Range Rover Sport range, it has been awarded a maximum five-star rating from safety agency, ANCAP .

The warranty is good with five-years and unlimited kilometre coverage.

There’s also five years roadside assistance and a complimentary five-year/130,000km service plan.

Yep, that's complimentary, as in free servicing for five years. I didn’t believe it myself and called Land Rover to check and was told that it does indeed mean free-of-charge.

If you’re worrying about servicing costs, you’re probably shopping at the wrong end of the market, but as with the range-topping Range Rover model the price of the car is expected to include servicing for the first five years and roadside assistance for the same period.

It’s also covered by a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty .

As with all Range Rovers the car will tell you when it needs a service depending on driving conditions. For example, if you hit the track or go off-roading it will likely need a visit quicker than if you're just commuting to and from work.

Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography: which model is better?

Two of the most popular trims are the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, so let’s take a closer look at the differences.

The Range Rover HSE is a step up from the base model with a 3.0-liter V6 engine with many features making the upgrade worthwhile. The Range Rover Autobiography is the top of the line model with a 5.0-liter V8 engine with every feature imagined included.

However, all these bells and whistles come at a steep price, so it’s important to consider whether the extra features are worth the additional cost.

Let’s take a look further at the comparison of the Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography.

Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography: what’s the difference?

If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, you might be considering the Range Rover HSE or Autobiography.

Here are key points we’ll cover:

  • The Autobiography is the more expensive option, but it offers more premium features and a more powerful engine.
  • The HSE is more affordable but still offers a comfortable and luxurious ride.
  • Both models have similar fuel efficiency ratings, but the Autobiography has a slightly larger fuel tank.
  • The Autobiography offers more advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
  • The HSE is a great option for those who want a luxury SUV without breaking the bank, while the Autobiography is perfect for those who want the ultimate luxury experience.

Both models offer impressive features and capabilities but have some key differences that may influence your decision.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the HSE and Autobiography both offer powerful engines and smooth handling.

However, the Autobiography comes with a supercharged V8 engine that delivers even more horsepower and torque than the HSE.

The Autobiography may be the better choice if you’re looking for the ultimate driving experience.

One of the biggest differences between the HSE and Autobiography is the interior.

While both models offer luxurious amenities like leather seats and wood trim, the Autobiography takes things to the next level with additional features like:

  • Executive Class Rear Seats
  • Refrigerated Compartment
  • Meridian Signature Sound System

The Autobiography is the clear winner if you’re looking for the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

Of course, all of these features come at a price.

The Autobiography is significantly more expensive than the HSE, with a starting price that’s about $40,000 higher.

The HSE might be the better choice if you’re on a budget.

Exterior design

When it comes to the exterior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, there are some notable differences.

Both models have a sleek and modern appearance, but the Autobiography stands out with its unique front and rear bumpers and it’s premium diamond-turned wheels.

One of the most significant differences between the HSE and Autobiography is the range of colors available.

While the HSE comes in a variety of colors, the Autobiography offers a more extensive range of exclusive colors, including Balmoral Blue and Flux Silver.

The Autobiography also offers a two-tone color scheme, which allows you to choose a contrasting roof color for a more personalized look.

In addition to the standard colors, both models offer a range of optional extras, including black exterior packages and gloss black wheels.

The Autobiography also offers a unique exterior styling package that includes a black contrast roof, black exterior accents, and 22-inch wheels.

Overall, the Range Rover Autobiography offers a more exclusive and personalized exterior design, with a wider range of colors and unique styling features.

However, the Range Rover HSE still offers a sleek and modern appearance, with a range of optional extras to help you customize your vehicle to your liking.

Interior design

When it comes to the interior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, you can expect nothing but luxury and elegance.

From the finest materials to the latest technology, every detail has been carefully crafted to provide you with the ultimate driving experience.

Both the HSE and Autobiography offer a variety of color options to choose from.

The HSE comes with standard colors such as Ebony, Almond, and Espresso, while the Autobiography offers a wider range of colors including Ivory, Cirrus, Eclipse, ECLP, Espres, PIM, VIN Tan, and Pimento.

The choice of colors available for both models allows you to personalize your vehicle to your taste.

Trim options

The Range Rover Autobiography takes the interior design to the next level by offering a choice of two premium trim options.

The first option is the Perforated Diamond-Cut Semi-Aniline Lthr Seat Trim, which comes with a unique diamond pattern and is available in a range of colors.

The second option is the Perforated Windsor Leather Seat Trim, which is available in Alm, Eclip, Ebny, Pimento, and Cir colors.

The HSE comes with the standard Windsor Leather Seat Trim.

The HSE and Autobiography have the latest technology features to enhance your driving experience.

The infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, allowing you to connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps.

The Meridian Sound System is also available as an option, providing a premium audio experience.

In conclusion, the interior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography is a testament to the attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into every vehicle.

Whether you choose the HSE or Autobiography, you can be sure that you will be driving in luxury and comfort.

Regarding performance, the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography are equipped with powerful petrol or diesel engines that deliver impressive performance on the road.

Let’s take a closer look at the engine performance of these two models.

Both the HSE and Autobiography come with a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine that delivers 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth and responsive shifting.

The Range Rover Autobiography offers an optional 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine that delivers an impressive 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is also paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of acceleration, the HSE can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds, while the Autobiography can do it in just 5.1 seconds with the V8 engine.

The HSE has a top speed of 130 mph, while the Autobiography with the V8 engine can reach a top speed of 155 mph.

The HSE and Autobiography offer impressive handling and agility on the road, thanks to their advanced suspension systems and all-wheel drive capabilities.

The Autobiography, however, features an adaptive dynamics system that helps to further enhance its performance and handling.

Terrain response

When it comes to off-roading, Terrain Response is one of the most important features of any Range Rover.

It is a system that adjusts the vehicle’s settings to suit different types of terrain, such as mud, sand, or snow.

The HSE and Autobiography trims both come with Terrain Response as standard, but there are some differences in the details.

On the HSE, Terrain Response is a single-speed system that adjusts the vehicle’s settings for five different types of terrain: General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl.

The system uses sensors to detect the type of terrain you are driving on and adjusts the vehicle’s settings accordingly.

For example, in Sand mode, the system will adjust the throttle response, transmission, and traction control to help you maintain traction in loose sand.

On the Autobiography, Terrain Response is a two-speed system that adds an additional mode for more extreme off-roading.

In addition to the five modes on the HSE, the Autobiography also has a Low Range mode for crawling over rocks or steep inclines.

Low Range mode reduces the vehicle’s speed and increases its torque, making it easier to navigate difficult terrain.

Overall, both the HSE and Autobiography trims offer excellent off-road capabilities thanks to Terrain Response.

The Autobiography’s additional Low Range mode may give it a slight advantage in extreme off-roading situations, but for most drivers, the HSE’s single-speed system should be more than sufficient.

Brake calipers

When it comes to the brake calipers on the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, there are some notable differences.

The HSE comes with Evoque size brake calipers, while the Autobiography comes with Brembo calipers.

Brembo is a well-known brand in the automotive industry and is often associated with high-performance vehicles.

The Brembo calipers are larger and more powerful than the Evoque size calipers found on the HSE.

This means that the Autobiography will have better braking performance than the HSE.

However, it’s important to note that the HSE is still equipped with quality brake calipers.

The Evoque size calipers are still more than capable of providing reliable and effective braking.

In addition to the differences in performance, there are also differences in appearance.

The Brembo calipers on the Autobiography have a distinctive red color, which can add a sporty and aggressive look to the vehicle.

The Evoque size calipers on the HSE are not as eye-catching, but still have a sleek and stylish appearance.

Overall, while the Autobiography’s Brembo calipers do offer better braking performance, the Evoque size calipers on the HSE are still a quality option.

The decision between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference and driving needs.

Here is a quick comparison of the brake calipers on the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography:

Parking assist

When it comes to parking, the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography models come with a range of advanced features to make the task easier and more efficient.

One of these features is Parking Assist, which can help you park your vehicle with greater precision and ease.

With Parking Assist, you can rely on your Range Rover to find an appropriate-sized parking spot and park itself fully.

The system relies on several sensors placed around the vehicle to detect the space and ensure that the SUV won’t get too close to other cars or obstacles.

Once you have switched on the Parking Assist feature, it uses sensors around your Range Rover to measure up potential parking spaces as you drive past.

Once it has detected a space that is 20% or more greater than your vehicle, it asks you to stop, let go of the steering wheel, and select reverse gear via the touchscreen.

The system will then take over and steer the vehicle into the parking space.

Parking Assist can be especially useful when parking in tight spaces or parallel parking, where it can be challenging to judge the distance between your vehicle and other cars or obstacles.

With Parking Assist, you can park your Range Rover with greater accuracy and confidence.

It is worth noting that Parking Assist is not a substitute for safe driving practices.

It is still important to remain alert and aware of your surroundings while parking your vehicle.

Parking Assist is simply a tool to help make the task of parking easier and more efficient.

  • Plug-in hybrid, with about 50 miles of electric range
  • 2023 model introduces the third Range Rover Sport generation

The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is fully redesigned for 2023. This midsize luxury SUV slots into the Land Rover lineup between the flagship Range Rover and the smaller Range Rover Velar.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P360 SE 4dr SUV 4WD (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.21 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

For 2023 it features a sharper exterior design, a luxurious and tech-savvy interior, and an abundance of advanced driver assist features. With a curved 13.1-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, the Sport's interior is state of the art. Under the hood is one of four available powertrain options. The most interesting ones are: the plug-in hybrid P440e, which Land Rover says can go more than 50 miles on all-electric power, or, for a more "heck with mpg" experience, the turbocharged V8 in the P530 that's good for 523 horsepower.

The 2023 Range Rover Sport retains the brand's off-road heritage with an advanced all-wheel-drive system capable of decoupling the front axle in certain situations and a standard air suspension that can raise the SUV to offer 11.1 inches of ground clearance. The top trim offers four-wheel steering, which tightens its turning radius, plus a torque-vectoring rear axle. But the Sport is less focused on absolute off-road capability when compared to its larger Range Rover counterpart. In fact, a dual-range transfer case is optional on the two lower Range Rover Sport trims but comes standard on every Range Rover. Think of the Range Rover Sport as its name implies — a tidier driving, if still not highly on-road-focused, version of the Range Rover.

Other alternatives to the Range Rover Sport include the Audi Q8, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. There's also a fair amount of overlap among Land Rover's lineup of SUVs, and certain versions of the regular Range Rover, Range Rover Velar or Defender might also meet your needs. Check out our test team's Expert Rating to get the full report on the new Range Rover Sport's hits and misses.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. BMW X5 M

Besides landing in the same subsegment of luxury SUVs, there's very little in common between the way these two SUVs drive. The Range Rover Sport remains a machine focused on comfort with a modicum of performance thrown in (especially at the First Edition level). But the X5 M is sharp, tight and immensely rapid (0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds). This BMW is among the first SUVs to focus on on-road performance, and it shows in today's X5 M. Its steering response is immediate, it jumps at every jab of the throttle, and it sticks to the road like few other vehicles in the class. Consider it only if those traits matter in your SUV.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Audi SQ8

Audi's SQ8 is also an on-road-oriented, performance-focused SUV. And though it's not Audi's hottest offering in that segment — that honor goes to the RS Q8 — it's more highly focused on turning, accelerating and braking than the Range Rover Sport. It will hit 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. Like the Range Rover Sport it comes standard with an air suspension and manages to land closer in ride quality to the Sport than some others in the segment (the X5 M, for example). It's quick and styled more like a Battlestar Galactica spaceship than an SUV. And, hey, maybe that's your thing.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Porsche Cayenne

Porsche's Cayenne is possibly the most competent performance SUV available. It offers a broad range of powertrains and impressive build quality, and it's more rewarding to throw into a corner than any SUV should be. But it is a Porsche so expect to pay for many features that come standard on competitors. It's sharper dynamically than the Range Rover Sport and — depending on the trim — quicker on most any road. And it manages to be both highly confident and extremely comfortable, something few automakers do as well as Porsche.

2023 land rover range rover sport first impressions.

Ryan ZumMallen

The Range Rover Sport is a popular SUV in the Land Rover brand portfolio, slotting between the high-end Range Rover and the bite-sized Range Rover Evoque. The company produced the previous Range Rover Sport from 2014 to 2022, and by the end it felt outmatched compared to rivals. Those days are over, as our first drive of the third-generation 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport confirmed.

There's a mix of engines to choose from — some are carryovers from the previous model and others are all-new for the Range Rover Sport. The base P360 SE trim retains the outgoing Sport's turbocharged inline-six with 48-volt mild hybrid system. It produces a healthy 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The next-level P400 SE Dynamic trim uses a high-output version of this powertrain and develops 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

This turbo-six forms the basis of the P440e Autobiography trim, but the electrical hardware is upgraded to be a full plug-in hybrid, or PHEV. The Range Rover PHEV bumps output to 434 hp, but torque gets a massive upgrade to 457 lb-ft, thanks in part to a 105-kW motor fed by a 31.8-kWh battery pack. While the PHEV has not yet been formally tested by the EPA as of our review's publication time, Land Rover estimates an all-electric range of 48 miles before the gas engine kicks in.

Finally, the range-topping P530 First Edition swaps out all of the fuel-saving hybrid stuff for a full-bore, pedal-to-the-metal twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. It produces 523 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque — only 5 more hp than the previous model's 5.0-liter V8, but torque from the new motor is up about 70 lb-ft.

Land Rover also says that an all-electric Range Rover Sport is due sometime in 2024.

We drove two versions of the 2023 Range Rover Sport: the V8-powered First Edition model and a plug-in hybrid that will come to the U.S. as the Range Rover Sport 440e. Starting with the V8, the Range Rover Sport feels powerful and unbothered on the road. But even this high-horsepower twin-turbocharged SUV is not exactly a visceral performance machine. Think of the Sport as an agile, more willing version of the full-size Range Rover on which it's based. It certainly feels more rigid and closer to the ground than its larger brother, for instance.

Still, the company avoided going full-bore on the adrenaline. The V8 provides strong, smooth power, but there is a delay if you stomp on the throttle as the dual turbochargers prepare to deliver their whooshing burst of acceleration. The steering also adopts a leisurely pace rather than immediate response to your commands, and the brake pedal — while clearly connected to powerful brakes — feels mushy and surprisingly vague. The Range Rover Sport is easy to drive, but it lacks the engagement and excitement of a BMW X5 M , for example.

To its credit, that smooth demeanor is highlighted to a greater extent in the plug-in hybrid version. We drove a Range Rover Sport 510e Autobiography, which is similar to the less powerful 440e Autobiography that will arrive on U.S. shores later this year. The two share a plug-in hybrid system, so we feel confident that 510e impressions will also apply to the U.S.-bound 440e. And our impressions are good. The Range Rover Sport PHEV supplies smooth and brisk electric power when it's needed most — particularly initial acceleration from a stop, filling in the power gaps during gear shifts, and helping to smooth out the on/off transitions from the fuel-saving engine stop-start system.

The additional weight from the onboard batteries and other components don't necessarily translate to a noticeable lower center of gravity compared with gas versions, but they also don't make the Range Rover Sport PHEV feel heavy or bulky. One pleasant surprise is that the brake pedal feels great and allows you to stop smoothly. On other PHEVs or EVs, the brakes can sometimes be overly grabby or hard to judge because of the combined nature of both regenerative braking and the regular friction brakes.

In short, the PHEV was the best version of the Range Rover Sport we drove.

An adaptive air suspension comes standard on every Range Rover Sport — and thank goodness. It would be worth shoveling out extra bucks for as an option, but Land Rover has spared you the effort. The result is excellent ride quality. Even riding on enormous 23-inch wheels, which do produce some bumpiness now and then, the worst road conditions are kept in check by this cushioning technology attached to all four wheels. On smooth roads the ride is simply great — the Sport is more composed than the larger full-size Range Rover with all that extra weight to lug around. The only noise consistently allowed inside the cabin is from wind at highway speeds, and even then, some light tunes or a good conversation will easily drown it out.

The interior feels modern yet elegant and features a curved 13.1-inch haptic feedback touchscreen that cascades into a concave center console. There's also a 13.7-inch digital information display in front of the driver, giving the Range Rover Sport a high-tech look. Some models have trim pieces outfitted in arresting forged carbon, with a coat of protective resin built in rather than layered on top. Other materials include a sustainable imitation leather upholstery, plus a "technical fabric" used on the upper doors and throughout other strategic locations to help improve the acoustics of the sound system.

The Range Rover Sport is full of the latest tech you'd expect from a luxury automaker. You'll get useful features such as heated and ventilated seats with 22-way adjustment and massage, selectable driving modes and an available 29-speaker Meridian sound system.

But there are also high-tech features such as active noise cancellation, which uses microphones throughout the vehicle — including some in the wheel arches — to reduce ambient road noise and make the cabin more serene. There is also a cabin air quality ionizer for the climate control system, which eliminates odors, keeps the air fresh and reduces carbon dioxide buildup. Finally, there are a number of high-definition cameras, which can provide a 360-degree perspective and assist with the automated parking feature. The camera array is so advanced that it merits its own sharkfin antenna, along with the other fin for the audio system.

Land Rover's latest operating system, Pivo Pro, will now be featured in the Range Rover Sport and is capable of receiving over-the-air updates to add features or address any bugs. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity is included, along with a 15-watt wireless device charger. We weren't huge fans of Land Rover's last operating system, but based on recent testing, the Pivi Pro is a huge improvement in terms of processor speed and menu clarity.

Don't let the Sport nomenclature fool you; the Range Rover Sport can handle its own in an off-road environment, to a surprising extent. The standard air suspension is able to raise the ground clearance to an eye-popping 11.1 inches, which is a lot by any SUV standards. As a result the Range Rover Sport can easily pass over hazardous rocks or large ruts in the trail. It also enhances the approach and departure angles needed to keep your front and rear bumpers clear of unforgiving terrain.

We drove the V8-powered First Edition along a trail of moderate — maybe even "moderate plus" — difficulty, with its fair share of obstacles. It came armed with two crucial features: Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 traction technology and the Stormer Handling Pack exclusive to First Edition models. Terrain Response 2 incorporates essential 4x4 equipment, such as numerous off-road driving modes and low-range gearing. For its part, the Stormer Handling Pack added an active rear differential that automatically vectors torque between the rear wheels to maximize available traction during off-roading.

Yet the star of the show was undoubtedly all-wheel steering, which enables the rear wheels to turn slightly, helping the SUV swing its rear out and around rocks and other tight spaces. Less successful was the off-road cruise control system. It worked effectively both up and down steep hills, though its separate adjustable speed and distance controls on the steering wheel were confusing and clunky to operate.

The Range Rover Sport is a midsize luxury SUV with seating for up to five passengers. There are several powertrains offered, as listed below. All Range Rover Sports come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension and four-wheel drive. Other highlight features include:

  • 20-way power-adjustable, heated front seats
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto smartphone integration
  • In-cabin air purification system
  • Meridian sound system
  • Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Wade sensing
  • Driver attention monitor

P440e Autobiography The plug-in hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport also includes:

  • Turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and 31.8-kWh battery powering 105-kW electric motor (total system output of 434 hp, 457 lb-ft)
  • Estimated electric range of 48 miles
  • Twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine (523 hp, 553 lb-ft)

Our favorite things about the redesigned Range Rover Sport weren't the particularly "sporty" parts. Instead, this redesigned model is delightfully smooth and upscale. Not quite a performance machine, the Range Rover Sport instead shines as simply an excellent luxury SUV.

Range Rover Sport P510e Plug-in Hybrid Autobiography – Review

what is an autobiography range rover sport

What is it?

The Range Rover Sport is a luxury, sporty, SUV that is very much like – but not exactly like – the even more expensive Range Rover.

Tracing its roots back to 2005, the Range Rover Sport may no longer be available with 7 seats but it is still very spacious and is the perfect family-lugger. Especially if that family likes to go on adventures in the wilderness. Or even a weekend surfing in Ilfracombe.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

It’s a full-fat 4×4 with a host of off-road abilities that puts most rivals in the shade, while still retaining an air of opulence inside.

Surprisingly, the new Ranger Rover Sport is still available with a diesel engine, although petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid units are options, too.

Well, it is a Range Rover Sport, so even the entry-level SE D300 will set you back over £83,000. For that, you get a 6-cylinder diesel unit (mild hybrid) that can still whisk this behemoth to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.

Bear in mind this “poverty-spec” Range Rover Sport still comes with 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, Windsor Leather Seats and a top-notch Meridian Sound System, to name just a few items. Start adding in some option packs and you’ll easily see the price shoot north of £90k.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

Next up is the Dynamic SE (from £86,620) which is available in Diesel, Petrol or Plug-in Hybrid guise. The P400 version provides a Petrol mild-hybrid power unit with 400 bhp and a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds and a WLTP fuel consumption figure of 29.4 mpg.

Fancy it as a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)? Then the price jumps to £92,980 and you gain 60 more horses. The battery is quite big (32 kWh) and Land Rover claims a range of up to 76 miles running in EV mode.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

My test model was a PHEV – albeit the Autobiography model – and I only managed just over 50 miles after fully charging the battery. This may be due to the sub-zero temperatures at the time which affects battery efficiency, but it should still be enough to get most commuters to work and back on one charge. My home charger (7.2 kW) took 5.5 hours to charge the battery from zero to 100%.

The Autobiography model starts from £98,360 and introduces more engine choices. There’s the D350 Diesel Mild hybrid (£102,540) and the P550e Plug-in Hybrid (£114,050). The 3-litre, 6-cylinder PHEV offers 550 bhp and a 0-60 mph figure of just 4.7 seconds. My 510 bhp PHEV appears to have been replaced by the P550e, with an increase in price of around £6K.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

However, if you’d rather spend £185,360 on a Range Rover Sport then you have no choice but to go for the V8-equipped SV Edition One model, giving you 635 bhp and a 0-60 mph sprint time of just 3.6 seconds. The only catch is there are no longer any available. Sorry.

How Does it Drive?

At first, you really feel the weight of the Range Rover Sport. It feels like a mini-bus. Even the steering wheel feels big. But it doesn’t handle like a bus. You may be expecting it to and therefore take things quite steady at first, but once you’ve gone around a few bends you begin to realize this ain’t no bus.

The switch between electric mode and hybrid mode goes almost completely unnoticed – until you put your foot down hard and the Sport leaps forward with a grunt. A hushed grunt, but a grunt, nevertheless.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

You can travel up to 70mph in electric mode only, but most PHEV owners will do the sensible thing and just let the car decide what should be used and when.

Is the Range Rover Sport really a Sports SUV? Well, it never feels truly sporty, thanks to its weight, but it does feel sportier than its bigger brother, the Range Rover.

You can have fun on twisting rural roads but the Sport doesn’t come close to being an apex-catcher. The steering requires just too much work to feel truly sporting, as it does with the Porsche Cayenne, for instance.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

It’s much more of a grand tourer. When Mrs. B and I took a Range Rover Sport p510e up to the Cairngorms for the weekend, we felt it was perfect for the mixture of long, almost empty A-roads, interspersed with challenging, twisting climbs that would have had most large, SUVs scrambling for a gear.

And that was the beauty of the Range Rover Sport – its automatic gearbox is unobtrusive in the most challenging of conditions. It just gets on with the job and never seems at a loss of which gear to choose. It inspires great confidence when exiting a tight bend, spotting a clear, straight road ahead and then just blasting past the car in front – if there is one, which was rare this particular weekend.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

It’s cossetting too. The 23-inch wheels (£1,100 extra) didn’t appear to make any difference to the quality of the ride which was soft without being wallowy.

I confess that I had the driving mode set to Dynamic for most of the journey to stiffen up the suspension in anticipation of the serpentine-like roads we would encounter. It seemed to work well. Comfort mode was fine for the dual-carriageways and even at 70 mph there was little intrusion from those large tyres, and virtually zero from the engine.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

By the end of the weekend, we had averaged 34 mpg, which I thought wasn’t too bad for a vehicle weighing in at almost 3 tons. We had set off with a full battery though, so that 5.5 hour charge should also be taken into consideration.

What’s the Inside Story?

On climbing up to and into the Range Rover Sport, the first thing you notice is the wonderful smell of the leather. Well, I did. After that, it’s a matter of taking in the quality of materials and fit and finish of the interior. It all feels and looks very special – which you would expect in a vehicle costing north of £110,000.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

The digital dash and 13.1-inch curved Infotainment screen are taken straight from the larger Range Rover and if you’re familiar with big-brother’s layout, then this will be a doddle because they are virtually identical.

The two front seats are so comfortable you may not want to get out of them. They are not only heated and cooled but have a massaging function too. With quite a choice of pummelling. It doesn’t mess around and you certainly feel the benefit after a few minutes.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

Visibility, as you would expect, is excellent. You certainly take the high ground in the Sport. The driving position is also excellent with 20-way electrical adjustment along with steering wheel adjustment, providing fine-tuning.

There’s a very clear, configurable HUD that means you need to spend less time glancing down at the large digital dash that can be configured to show just about any info you want, including your sat nav screen. The quality is spot on with even the smaller figures being pin-sharp.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

Ergonomically, I found the climate adjustment a tad fiddly. Both the driver and front passenger get a large rotary dial for climate. But if you push down on it first, it also controls the heated/cooled seats. If you pull it up first, the fan speed gets adjusted. A great idea but the problem is that sometimes you’re not sure if you’ve pushed down on it accidentally so need to take a look to see if you’re adjusting what you think you’re adjusting and that becomes distracting.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

I wasn’t a fan of the steering wheel function buttons either. I find them non-intuitive in use and poorly designed. You shouldn’t have to spend 10 minutes figuring out how to get from one menu to another to make a simple adjustment.

Other than those niggles, the interior of the Sport is very impressive. The curved screen doesn’t just look cool, it means less distracting reflections, too. JLR’s interface has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and it shows in the Range Rover Sport with bright, clear graphics and a responsive touch screen with haptic feedback to make navigating around even easier.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

The rear-view mirror doubles up as a rear-view, wide-angle camera at the flick of a switch, so restricted views become a thing of the past. It’s a neat idea that also gives better visibility at night.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

There’s loads of storage space with 2 glove boxes in front of the passenger and a deep storage area in the wide central column where you’ll also find 2 cupholders. The wireless charging tray is fiddly to get to under the infotainment screen but at least your phone is out of sight if you forget to pick it up.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

You get wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto if you wish to use your own Sat Nav app and maybe stream your music. The Meridian sound system is superb, with a big stage-sound feel to it thanks to a sub-woofer and no less than 34 speakers.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

Rear passengers certainly aren’t neglected with just as much room back there as in the bigger Range Rover. Three adults, side-by-side will still be comfortable on short-to-medium journeys, while two children can be kept apart, easily. The little loves also get their own climate control, USB chargers and cup holders, hidden away in the middle seat backrest. The rear seats can also be reclined slightly.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

Boot space is actually a little bigger than the Range Rover and I like the fact that the load space can be lowered by pushing a button in the boot, which silently lowers the back of the Range Rover to make loading items a little easier.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

As you would expect, the Range Rover Sport comes with a truckload of driving assistance systems, including Digital, adaptive LED Headlights. Each headlight features 1.3 million Digital Micromirror Devices and adaptive lighting uses navigation data to pre-emptively follow the road ahead.

And, of course, there there is JLR’s legendary off-road systems that not only let you see what is beneath the front wheels, via a 3D display on the infotainment screen, but at the push of a button will make all those difficult-terrain decisions for you – including ride-height.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

It’s no longer just Hill-Descent that decides how slowly to take a steep slope. The Range Rover Sport can take control of both accelerator and braking while traversing any off-road situation. Cruise control for the Green-Laner.

The new Range Rover Sport doesn’t disappoint. It looks and feels classy without being too “in-your-face” like say a Bentley Bentayga. Its levels of comfort aren’t far off the Bentley, either.

It offers levels of refinement that most can only dream of, while its ability off-road remains unparalleled in a family SUV that doesn’t carry the Land Rover badge. The fact that most of them will never see a muddy field remains a moot point. The ability is there and come the floods or snow you may be very grateful for them.

what is an autobiography range rover sport

What Is The Difference Between A Vogue And An Autobiography?

At first glance, the distinction between a Vogue magazine and an autobiography may not be immediately evident.

The former is a style of magazine made popular by Vogue Magazine, whereas the latter is a narrative account of a person’s life written by the subject themselves.

The main difference between a Vogue magazine and an autobiography is found in the type of content they contain.

A Vogue magazine is usually filled with articles covering fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and culture, meant to inspire its readers.

Additionally, it may include interviews with celebrities, artists, and influential people in the fashion industry.

On the other hand, an autobiography is a narrative written by the subject about their life, usually from the perspective of the writer.

It is usually more personal and reflective, offering insight into the subject’s experiences and opinions.

In terms of the intended audience, a Vogue magazine is generally aimed at a general public, with the intent of providing entertainment and inspiration.

An autobiography, however, is often written for a more specific audience, such as family, friends, or those interested in the life of the writer.

Lastly, the purpose of a Vogue magazine is to provide an escape from the readers’ everyday lives, while an autobiography is meant to give an account of the writer’s life.

A Vogue magazine often focuses on the glamorous lifestyle, whereas an autobiography is often reflective and honest.

In summary, the difference between a Vogue magazine and an autobiography lies in the content, the intended audience, and the purpose of the writing.

A Vogue magazine is packed with articles on fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and culture, while an autobiography is a personal narrative written by the subject about their life, usually for a specific audience.

A Vogue magazine is intended to provide entertainment and inspiration, while an autobiography is intended to provide an honest and reflective account of the writer’s life.

The Land Rover Buying Guide: Every Model, Explained

Rugged and synonymous with prestige, Land Rovers fit in on the trails and on Rodeo Drive.

land rover defender 2022

By Tyler Duffy

Welcome to Brand Breakdown , a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

A History of Land Rover

Land Rover is a British automaker that produces luxury four-wheel-drive vehicles. The brand technically began in 1948 when the Rover Company launched the Land Rover Series of off-road vehicles. British Leyland took the brand upmarket with the Range Rover in 1970 and branched off Land Rover into a distinct brand from now-defunct Rover in 1978. Land Rover was later owned by BMW and Ford. Current owner Tata Motors bought Land Rover from Ford in 2008, merging it with Jaguar to form Jaguar Land Rover .

discovery driving on road through the trees

Land Rover has gone full-on luxury these days, but the brand maintains its reputation for off-road capability. Land Rover does not give its vehicles “Trail Rated” badges like Jeep ; it’s presumed — since they carry the name Land Rover — that they are able to do that (yes, even the Evoque). The flipside is Land Rover’s not especially stellar reputation for reliability.

In 2021, Jaguar Land Rover embarked on a new product strategy called “Reimagine .” The Land Rover lineup will shift dramatically toward electrification. Land Rover plans to launch its first EV in 2024 and six within the next five years. By 2030, Land Rover expects every model to have an EV option and EVs to make up 60 percent of Land Rover sales.

Wait, Isn’t Land Rover a “House of Brands” Now?

Sort of. Jaguar Land Rover recently rebranded itself as “JLR,” and as part of that change, the company announced a new “House of Brands” strategy that will see it become four brands (Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, Jaguar) instead of the traditional pairing of Jaguar and Land Rover.

What does this mean for Land Rover? Not a lot, really.

Buyers won’t notice anything different. Range Rover, Defender and Discovery vehicles will still carry Land Rover badging, and you will still visit a Land Rover dealer to buy them. Effectively, what this does is diminish Jaguar — set to become a more low-volume, high-end EV brand — within the portfolio in favor of the more popular Land Rover wing.

Land Rover Terms You Should Know

HSE: Stands for “High Specification Equipment.” This is a higher-than-standard trim level offered on most Land Rover models. SVO and SVR: SVO stands for “Special Vehicles Operations,” the brand’s high-performance wing. The highest-performance vehicles under the SVO wing replace the O with an R, which stands for “racing.” SVO and SVR trims aren’t available across the board, but vehicles that sport the trim level are, in scientific terms, “fun as hell.” Autobiography : This is a Range Rover trim offered on the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport and the Evoque. This trim is fancy. It will have luxury finishes, an array of standard features and come at a significantly higher price point. Dynamic: This is a term affixed to Range Rover trims. These cars are more aggressive and dynamic than non-dynamic trims. That can mean styling. It can also mean a more powerful engine. Range Rover: Land Rover has equity in “Range Rover” as a luxury brand. Thus, four of the seven vehicles are “Range Rovers.” These cars tend to be referred to as just “Range Rovers” because “Land Rover Range Rover X” is a mouthful. Sport : Smaller version. The Range Rover Sport is smaller than the Range Rover. The Discovery Sport is smaller than the Discovery.

What's new for 2024.

The big news for 2024 is the addition of the 626-hp Range Rover Sport SV , but we review that model separately. The regular Range Rover Sport gains a new 542-hp plug-in-hybrid powertrain called P550e. This replaces last year's P440e model and offers both more power and more electric driving range. Elsewhere, the Range Rover Sport's infotainment system has been upgraded to the latest Pivi Pro 4 software interface. The update includes sliders for volume and climate controls that Land Rover says are easier to use; the system menus have been simplified as well to make it easier to navigate. The V-8-powered P530 powertrain has been discontinued for 2024 to make room in the lineup for the performance-oriented SV model.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Sport starts at $85,075 and goes up to $119,675 depending on the trim and options.

We think the more powerful P400 Dynamic SE is the trim to go with. Its extra horsepower will undoubtedly give it a bit of a boost both around town and on the highway, and it offers a litany of luxury and convenience features without requiring a six-figure bill.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The entry-level engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that employs a 48-volt hybrid system and makes 355 horsepower in the P360 SE and 395 horsepower in the P400 SE Dynamic. When we tested the P360 SE , it needed only 5.7 seconds to hit 60 mph but felt more sluggish than that around town. Our test vehicle delivered peerless ride quality, though, which was appreciated over the broken tarmac near our Michigan headquarters. A plug-in-hybrid P550e setup is exclusive to the fancy Autobiography trim and pairs an electric motor to the inline-six for a combined 542 horsepower. Land Rover estimates the PHEV powertrain will motivate the Range Rover Sport to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and an adjustable air suspension. The Range Rover Sport can also be had with an optional performance driving setup called Stormer Handling Pack, which adds rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Range Rover Sport's blend of comfort and athleticism and noted that its rear-wheel-steering system made maneuvering in tight spaces less challenging than in other similarly sized SUVs.

2023 range rover sport rear

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The P550e plug-in hybrid model carries a battery that is large enough for a claimed 51 miles of electric driving per charge. We haven't tested this model yet, but when we do we'll take it on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route to see how its electric range stacks up to Land Rover's estimate.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

According to Land Rover, the P360 and P400 models will deliver 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, the P360 SE matched its 25 mpg estimate—not bad for a 5387-pound SUV. For more information about the Range Rover Sport's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior design of the Range Rover Sport is an exercise in minimalism, with few physical buttons and switches and a streamlined appearance throughout the cabin. Buyers can choose from either textile or genuine leather upholstery in attractive two-tone designs. The dark-tinted chrome accents look particularly premium. Power-adjustable front seats are standard, but a set of chairs with up to 22 ways of adjustability as well as massage, ventilation, and winged headrests is optional. An integrated air purification system is available and is said to reduce odors, bacteria, viruses, and allergens from the cabin.

2024 range rover sport interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Range Rover Sport's dashboard offers plenty of digital real estate, with a large 13.1-inch curved touchscreen serving infotainment duties and an even larger 13.7-inch screen parked in front of the driver to display the gauges. Land Rover's Pivi Pro interface is the company's best attempt at in-car infotainment yet, but as we've learned using it in other models such as the Defender and the Discovery , it's not without its quirks. The displays are crisp and clear, though, and it looks high-end floating above the Range Rover Sport's upholstered dashboard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, and all Range Rover Sports come with Amazon's Alexa. A wireless smartphone charging pad is cleverly integrated on a shelf just beneath the infotainment screen, too. A 29-speaker Meridian stereo system is optional and incorporates speakers in the Range Rover Sport's front and rear headrests.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A host of driver-assistance features are standard, including automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree exterior camera system. An adaptive cruise control system is also included, and it even has an off-road feature. For more information about the Range Rover Sport's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Range Rover Sport's warranty coverage is about average for its class, but it doesn't include complimentary scheduled maintenance. The purchase price of three of its key competitors—the BMW X5 and X7 and the Volvo XC90—include three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Car Review: Range Rover Sport remade in 2023 now adds a powerful plug-in hybrid, big V-8 in 2024

Exterior of the Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is the more playful version of the stately Range Rover luxury SUV. With slightly less off-road aspiration and more on-road driving dynamics, the Range Rover Sport has stepped up its game lately with a big makeover.

It starts with sleek styling from the redesign in 2023. It’s not as tall as the big Range Rover, however, it shares more of the look of its pricier big brother. The Range Rover Sport has a lower roofline and its new front fascia is rounded and softer presenting a nice, modern take. Choosing the SE Dynamic trim level with the blacked-out trim pieces and black wheels makes this Range Rover Sport look rather racy for a SUV. The expressive LED taillights and the blacked-out panel help this large SUV seem smaller.

Driving experience

Most Range Rover Sport models come with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine between 355hp and 395hp that will please most buyers. A revised plug-in hybrid with more power than last year’s V-8 is available in the Autobiography trim level.

But if your heart is set on V-8 power for 2024, there is a new SV version with 626hp that should get your heart pumping. No matter which version you choose, the driving experience is elevated and more luxurious than before. It does a better job of soaking up bumps than it does flying around corners. Its softer suspension means there is more body lean than some other SUVs, but it’s a comfortable cruiser, not something that could always be said about past versions.

Interior design

The Range Rover Sport ups its luxury game with an improved interior from previous versions. Better materials with upgraded leather and even the trim pieces are vastly improved. Its more inviting and comparable to the pricier Range Rover. While space isn’t as cavernous as the big Range Rover, the Sport still has good space. It lacks headroom due to the lower roofline. The tech gets upgraded with bigger screens and the touch screen is easier to use than in the past.

Cost: $85,850 base version to $182,000 for SV Edition One

MPG: 18 MPG combined; I managed 17.2 mpg in 336 miles of mixed driving.

Safety: In-Control Protect; emergency braking with assist; traffic sign recognition & adaptive speed limiter; lane-keep assist; driver condition monitor; Park Pack; head-up display; Drive Pack

Things to know: The Range Rover Sport gets more sophisticated styling, a better interior and big power for 2024.

  • Redesigned exterior shares more style with the pricier Range Rover
  • An interior that sees an upgrade in materials and design
  • Packed with technology and safety equipment
  • Gets pricey with higher trim levels
  • MPG suffers with V-8 power
  • Plug-in hybrid version is hard to find
