A Visit To A Fair

Essay No. 01

A visit to a fair is very interesting and entertaining. A village fair presents a colorful and lively spectacle. The Baisakhi fair occupies a unique place in the almanac of Indian festivals. It is held on the first day of the month of Baisakhi every year. The harvesting season is over. It marks the advent of summer. The farmers have stored enough grain. They are full of new hopes and new joys. Their granary is full. Even the small farmers have stored enough wheat. Every heart is happy at such a time. The fair is generally held outside the village or town. It is held near some temple or tank. Small shopkeepers and vendors set up their stalls and hand carts. People from neighboring villages throng the place. Young and old, men women, and children in colorful clothes come to see the fair. Hawkers, sweet-meat sellers, and balloon sellers cry their wares at the top of their voices. Somewhere a juggler is seen showing his tricks to the people. Sadhus wearing saffron clothes and beggars carrying bowls in their hands are seen at the fair. Farmers come on foot, in carts, and on camelback. Many people go round the fair. The Red Cross stall draws a big rush. Mike’s announcements about some child lost or found distract the attention of the people. Children enjoy swings and merry-go-rounds. Outside the arena, wrestling tournaments are held in the afternoon. Races and Bhangra dance attract the attention of the people. Everybody seems to be in a merry mood. The Baisakhi fair leaves a long echo behind.

A Visit to the Fair

Fairs are common in our life. They make our life enjoyable. People wait eagerly for them as they enjoy themselves on these days.

Almost all fairs are common in villages, towns, and cities. But in cities, the fairs are much bigger and are held with more pomp and show.

In Delhi, Diwali fairs have become very famous. At every festival, a number of fairs are held in different corners of the city.

This year, I went to see a grand fair held at Ramlila Grounds during Diwali. I went with my parents. We went there by bus.

The bus was packed with people and the roads were unusually busy. People were going in different directions.

At Ramlila grounds, there was a huge crowd of people at the entry itself. One had to get in a queue for the entry tickets. After getting tickets we entered the fair.

It was all very colourful. Two elephants were there at the entrance to welcome the people.

At the fair, there were over 200 stalls of different items. The sweet stalls were overcrowded. People were standing in queue for their turn to come.

The sweet sellers were doing brisk business. My mother wanted to do some shopping, so we went to different stalls which had clothes, utensils, handicrafts, and jewellery.

There was one stall I liked very much. It was full of wooden toys. My father bought me a wooden doll and a soldier.

They were all beautiful and looked real. Children were buying toys, fireworks, and candles. I also bought some candles and fireworks.

Some children were taking free rides on horses and camels. I also enjoyed a ride on the horse. After roaming about, we felt hungry. We had food at the food stall. It was neat and clean. After food, I also had a cold drink.

While coming back, I pleaded with my father to take a ride on the merry-go-round. All of us enjoyed the ride very much. It was good fun.

After the ride, we started at home. It was a day which I thoroughly enjoyed. Fairs are a lot of fun.

A Visit to A Fair

Baisakhi is a popular festival. It falls on the thirteenth of April every year. It marks the end of the winter season. The wheat crop is ready for harvesting. It is a day of joy and amusement for all.

People look forward to this festival. In our town, a fair is held every year on this day. Almost everyone goes to at- tend it. It is held by the temple.

Last year I visited the fair with my parents. On the way, we met people who too were going to attend the fair. They were clad in their best clothes. The children looked happy and gay.

At the fairground, there was hustle and bustle. There were many stalls, which were tastefully decorated. The stall owners were doing a roaring business. There were stalls of different things – snacks, sweets, toys, garments, cosmetics, books, puries and jelabies, drinks and ice cream. People were seen buying things or eating at different stalls, some were drinking hot tea or cold drinks. Children were busy buying balloons. Girls too were busy buying bangles of their choice.

There were many other things to attract and amuse the visitors. There were jugglers, a snake charmer, fortune-tellers and palmists. Children were seen enjoying swings. We also rode on merry-go-rounds.

In a corner, there was a big stage. Cultural programmes were going on there. Many women presented folk dance. Farmers were singing rural songs to the beating of drums. All these things were worth watching. The organizers had also organized wrestling matches. There were policemen to maintain law and order. They also controlled traffic.

It was great fun at the fair. We returned home at 7 p.m. It was an unfortunate visit to the fair.”

Fairs and festivals are very common in India. Fairs let the people get together to make merry, drown differences if any and create better understanding among them. Some fairs last for a few days. In such fairs temporary bazaars and stalls are set up.

Last Sunday I and some of my friends made a plan to visit a fair held in a nearby village, Ramgarh. There is a temple and people worship Goddess Durga there. As fixed we reached the fair at about 10 o’clock. We had enough time, so there was no hurry. First of all we went to the temple, worshipped the Durga, offered prasad and finally started for sight seeing.

The actual fair was a place of great pomp and show. There were shops of general items, toys and sweets all decorated nicely and had irresistible attraction for people of all age groups. We saw huge crowd at almost every shop. Men, women and children in their gaudy dresses, looked veiy busy in doing this or that. There was a great rush outside the temple gate. People were standing in a queue with an earnest desire to have a glimpse of Goddess Durga.

There was hustle and bustle everywhere in the fair. All were enjoying it (the fair) in their own way. Young girls and newly wedded brides were seen busy in buying radiant bangles of various colours and sizes from the bangle-sellers. Newly married ladies made a lot of purchases of cosmetics.

Elderly ladies were not less busy. They were buying goods of household utility. There were hawkers too at several places, all crying in different tones to sell their goods. We were getting amused by their tones and gestures.

The whirling and turling merry-go-rounds with cracking sounds were also a centre of attraction especially for the young children. They were enjoying rides on them. Some people were dancing to the beating of drums. Their folk dance was worth- seeing and we watched it with great happiness.

There were snake-charmers and jugglers too. The rope dancers and magicians were also busy in their different activities. We saw in one corner some foretellers. There was also a great rush. I too wished to go there and know my future. But soon my inner voice prohibited me from doing this and I with my friends moved on. I thought I should not believe in fate but in hard work which alone can bring all success in life.

The whole fair was full of activity. There were some volunteers and scouts who were helping the people in several ways. Some were regulating the traffic; some were providing water to the thirsty while some were engaged in restoring the lost children to their parents. There were good police arrangements to maintain law and order.

In the evening the fair came to an end. People began to return to ‘their homes. We too came back with a nice feeling. The fair is, no doubt, a good source of knowledge about the varied life of our country and we must visit it whenever we have suitable time.

The Concept of Fair

Even though the world of entertainment and recreation has changed to a greater extent, and it kept on changing at a greater speed, “Fair” is still, and will always be close to our hearts. Because it is not just a place of recreation and entertainment, rather it is a traditional event that takes us to the roots of our culture in a fun and loving manner. You may be in any part of the world, but once in a year, you will be hyped about the word ‘fair’. Fair is a place where you can find all sorts of entertainment, food as well as business talk. In a fair, the mass of people gathers together, some for entertainment while some for business talk. Below is a presentation of both long and short-type essays where we will relive the moments of fair.

Essay on Fair in English

Writing an Essay on the fair is just as fun as attending the fair because it takes you on a walk-in memory lane so that you can write about it from your experience. But it is also a good idea to have some guidance while writing the essay in English, and hence Vedantu provides that Guidance to all the students for completely free.

Some information about the Fair

Fair can be considered as one of the oldest recreation activities, at least in India, in which hundreds of people gather at a time. We can trace the beginnings of the fair in 1000 AD. And the reason behind it was to boost the businesses and hence in return, it helps in boosting the overall economic condition of the country. Interestingly, the same thing can still be seen in modern times in events like that of “Book-Fairs” where the writers and readers all come together.

In modern times the fairs have taken a place of an annual break, where everyone from the city can go for recreation, and to be relaxed. Fairs are generally set for a few days or a week. More often than not, the supply of the seller’s stock comes directly from the manufacturer, and hence the things can be brought at the fair at a relatively low price. In this way both the seller and the buyer get benefits.

Things that Happen at Fair

It is important for the students to learn about the things that happen at the fair in order to write an essay on it. The first thing, one may notice in the fair is the rides, there are many rides at the fair, such as Giant wheels that takes the riders to the sky, merry go round horse ride which can be considered as an unofficial trademark of Indian Fair, stalls of Magic Tricks, many toy shops, interestingly the toys that are available in these shops are, for the most part, not available in the shops of the city. Along with these rides the store of many fun activities, such as Balloon shooting can be found in the Fair as well. Also, if you ever had visited the fair, you must refresh your memory for writing the essay on fair.

While writing about the Fair these are the things that you must take into consideration. An important thing is that we eat lots of different things at Fair, and many of them are either packet food or the food that comes in the plastic, and plastic is not good for the environment, hence you must try to avoid it.

Essay on Fair for Students

‘Fair’ this particular word takes us into an imaginary world of a big ground full of different kinds of people and different kinds of joy rides. On those rides, where people sit on them screaming with joy and amusement. We also imagine many different types of stalls which are selling dazzling earrings, fancy clothes, tasty food and even selling toys for the kids. In a coinage, fairs are a representation of these different types of people who come to sell and buy and also have fun at a single place. After all, a fair is a place where there is no boundary set for people or for fun.  Also, in another sense, we can perceive fairness as an exchange of the creativity and productivity of different cultures around the globe.

The culture of fair started somewhere between the early 1000s or 1200s. Fairs actually started as an economic activity different from the redundant business processes and activities of the year. Now the fairs are viewed as an annual break to the year when everyone in the city or town is fed up with their routines throughout the year, fair then serves as a refreshment aided with knowledge, creativity, and business. Fair is set for a multiday, this proves to be a huge benefit for all the buyers and for all the sellers, even products are supplied from the foreign merchants.

Fairs in India

The oldest fair in the history of our country, India is the ‘Kumbh Mela’ which is almost more than 2000 years old. When the planet Jupiter, and the sun, and the moon aligns, those dates are considered appropriate for this Kumbh Mela to take place. Kumbh Mela takes place every after 3 years. The Kumbh Mela in 2013 made a world-record gathering of 10 crore people. If someone is looking for beautiful and rich fabrics, shining earrings, and a variety of other things, then he must go to Pushkar Mela in Rajasthan.

A Village Fair Essay

A village fair is a colorful fair held in a small village, the fair is held during festivals, like Dussehra and Diwali. Village fairs are also held annually during the celebration of a local deity or the religious beliefs of the villagers. A village fair is generally much smaller than a city fair in appearance as well as in the activities performed. An Indian local village fair is marked by relatively small shops that are selling mostly toys and sweet items.

The hawkers who sell small toys on the hand-held wooden frames are seen roaming in the fair. Flutes, whistles, and a variety of lightweight toys are also seen in a village fair, this attracts children a lot. The Hawkers in a fair constantly play their flute or whistle in order to attract the children to buy those items from them.

Descriptive Essay About the Fair

Once in the spring season I went to a fair in my village, the fair was set up in honor of a local deity worshipped here. I wish my uncle and aunt visited the fair. As we entered the fair, I felt a different sense of enjoyment in the air, the fair was lit with a lot of hubbubs. We passed the stalls till we came to my favorite stall wherein large kadhai jalebis were being fried, the smell of the sweet made my taste buds active to savor the same. We had jalebis and kachori in the stall and went further to explore the fair. I played a shooting game where I won a beautiful flower vase. Nearby, was a shop selling big and small earrings, my aunt got a pair, the earrings had mirrors shining on them, which dazzled my sight. Walking a distance I saw a big merry-go-round where children rode the ride merrily. I stood there and watch them enjoy wondering why I grew up for now I could never sit on that merry-go-round. Instead, now I can ride the camel my uncle assured me. I enjoyed the ride on the hunch of the camel.

All was a lovely time spent well in that fair. I will carry this memory to my heart. As I proceeded towards home, I decided to share, my experience in my diary so that I can always relive the moment.

Fair, be it a city fair or a village fair, provides a fun activity to the children, as well as serves as a refreshment for the young and elderly. No doubt the fair is a fun event, but this is also a source of livelihood for the vendors who depend on this event. Many small vendors, also the hawkers depend on these fairs for their businesses. Fairs provide a platform for them to gain customers. They serve as a place for having quality time with family and friends. Parents also ensure that safety precautions are required to be properly taken before sending their children to the rides or to the ferry wheels.

A Visit to a Book Fair: 250-300 Words

It was the biennial International Book Fair at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. My friends and I decided to visit the fair since the opportunity comes only once in two years.

We reached the gate of the venue as early as 10 a.m. and bought our tickets. There was a long queue of book lovers before the counter and it amazed me that even in this age of e-books there are people who read books.

After the security check, we headed towards the centre of the action – the different halls. On our way, We could see banners of different sizes, with the big publishers occupying the largest stalls. Apart from the local publishers, national and international publishers too featured in the fair.

We visited some of the stalls and were impressed by the huge collection of books which included story books, novels, books on anatomy, medicine and others.

Later on, we visited the other halls and made sure that we dropped in at the stalls of the international participants. There were food stalls too, to offer refreshments, and we relieved our fatigue by sipping hot coffee.

As hours passed by, the number of visitors also increased and it became difficult for us to move about freely within the stalls which were full of book lovers.

It was 8 p.m. when we started our journey back home. We were almost drenched in sweat though it was a January evening. We were happy to carry the heavy bundles of books that we had bought and wished that such book fairs would be held more frequently so that people would be inspired to read more.

India has a large number of villages, notwithstanding the rapidly occurring urbanisation. A village fair is one that takes place within the community. It is a customary event in rural life, and often a place to unwind for those living in the villages. Village fairs, usually held annually, are held in the marketplace or in an open space. What is the purpose of a village fair? Here, villagers can buy toys, wooden utensils, clay pots, baskets, cosmetics, and more. These local fairs offer some unique attractions. Circus parties, jatra parties, puppet performances, magic shows, etc. are among the most alluring offerings. Both kids and adults have fun here.

200 Words Essay on a Village Fair

A village fair is a time of amusement for the villagers and a time away to unwind from their monotonous routine. A village fair helps small-scale trade flare up their business, encourages the local industry and agriculture to grow more. Village fairs usually have temporary markets put up where the shops sell sweets, fruits, and toys. Often, there are hawkers selling various items like those for household or personal use. Children often purchase things like toys and kites. People relish sweets like ice cream, kulfi, faluda, and more in village fairs. However, the attending villagers often need to stay careful since pickpockets taking advantage is a common occurrence in such crowded events.

The most anticipated event is a village fair, especially for children. Village fairs are like exhibitions with a lot of hustle and bustle. Weavers, artisans, blacksmiths, and carpenters often set up stalls at village fairs to sell their products and earn money. For the people of the village, a village fair is a source of enjoyment. Village fairs are an indispensable part of village life and culture. It offers not only the village where it is held, but also the adjacent communities, great entertainment options. Visitors to the fair from nearby and distant villages could be seen coming with their families and friends.

500 Words Essay on a Village Fair

Festivals and fairs abound throughout India. A village fair is a typical celebration of village life. Rural fairs still have historical value, despite the fact that they have steadily become less common owing to the influence of contemporary culture and technology.

Village fairs come as a good break to the monotonous routines of the villagers, who are often excited about them. Children enjoy sweets, and buy toys and balloons at these fairs. Both children and adults participate in games. Often, village fairs have swings and other rides that can be enjoyed by everyone alike. Jugglers perform feats and entertain audiences. A village fair also features items from cottage industries, wooden furniture, agricultural implements, etc., which greatly appeals to adults.

How is a Village Fair?

The entire fair is filled with the chatter of rural people discussing news and opinions about their village. It serves as a gathering place for people of neighbouring villages as well. Everyone is dressed to the nines in their finest attire. Women wear dazzling "dupattas" with sequin or zari work, colourful matching blouses, swirling long skirts, silver anklets that jingle on their feet, and silver bangles. In addition to the children being dressed in their brightest attire, the males also wear colourful shirts and dhotis.

Another prime attraction of a fun fair is different rides and Ferry Wheels. Miniature trains, vehicles, and horses make up the majority of the rides at a fair that are intended for children. The rides are usually painted with bright colours and adorned with lights of different colours to enhance their appearance at night. Apart from the fun activities, a fun fair has various food stalls for the children and their elder companions.

The fair's area is decorated by vibrant tents housing a variety of entertaining events, including magic shows, circus acts, stunts, and movies, among others. There are open booths for games like Throw the Ring, Air Gun Shooting, and dart shooting. Anyone who throws a ring precisely over a far-off item in such a manner that the object lands inside the ring has a chance to win a reward in the game "Throw the Ring." The winner receives the item as their reward.

Similarities Between City and Village Fairs

A village fair is similar to the fairs held in our cities, with the exception that the goods sold are tailored to the requirements and preferences of the villagers. There are stalls with a variety of goods for sale. Food stands are often the busiest, both in city and village fairs. Vendors sell various household items like "matkas," pots and pans, tiny colourful boxes for holding trinkets or medicines, and so on. Other items include clay or aluminium kitchenware. Women can often be seen bargaining and buying things that catch their attention.

My Visit to a Village Fair

Last year, I went to the Baisakhi fair in my native village. Many people from nearby villages attended the fair. Everyone appeared to be in a festive mood. Their laughter had no bounds and there was a lot that intrigued and attracted me. The locals were dressed in beautiful attire. The kids were ecstatic in every way. All around, people were laughing. The villagers sang traditional songs. I had a good time while dancing to the sound of drums.

There was a lot of excitement and commotion. The marketplace was crammed. Jugglers and rope dancers were present. They entertained the locals by performing feats and tricks. I loved the swings and my favourite were the merry-go-rounds. The fair was a medley of sounds and sights. I came across dance performances and also a wrestling match and a juggler's show. In the evening, there were races and matches. Prizes were awarded to the winners. At nightfall, the crowds began to disperse with armfuls of sweets and toys. I had a great time.

500+ words essay on fair.

Fair is usually termed as a gathering of people for certain entertainment or commercial activities. The fairground is an area with hundreds of temporary shops selling various products to the people who have gathered to visit the fair. A village fair is usually marked by hawkers selling toys and sweets. In our states usually, a fair is organized during festivals. A book fair displays books belonging to various disciplines, ranging from history to autobiographies, storybooks, science books, books on literature, fictional books, encyclopedias, books on general knowledge, etc.

A city fair is usually held in an open field inside the city. The field for the fair could be small or big, depending on its availability or on the size of the fair. The most significant sign of a city fair is the noise that is heard on the loudspeakers.

Someone outside the fair hears different commercial and entertainment activities through loudspeakers. Vendors selling their products, a magician calling eager children, call for audiences to witness a just to begin stunt performance and other activities could be heard simultaneously.

Village Fair

A village fair is also held during festivals, like Dussehra and Diwali . It could also be held annually during the celebration to a local deity or religious beliefs of the people. A village fair is usually smaller than a city fair in appearance as well as the activities. Indian local village fair is marked by relatively small shops, selling mostly toys and sweets.

Many hawkers selling small toys on hand-held wooden frames could be seen roaming in the fair. Flutes, whistles, and a variety of lightweight toys are seen in a village fair, which attracts children a lot. Hawkers in fair constantly play the flute or whistle in order to lure the children to buy from them.

Apart from these other main attractions of a village fair include sweets and different types of swings and ferry wheels, especially for the children. Hints: Greetings – venue, date and time – classification of stand – your choice in books – conclude

17 A Saltlake, Kolkata

20th November 2021

Dear Elena,

I hope this letter of mine finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing this letter to you to narrate about a book fair that I recently visited.

The fair took place in Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata. It started on 10th March and went on for three days. The stalls were divided according to the genre. The basic classifications were fiction, non-fiction, autobiography, Hindi and Bengali. This fair was unique because there were guides who gave an overview and reviews on the book we selected. There was also a sitting area where we could sit and read the first few pages. This was helpful as it helps the readers to get an idea and select their books wisely.

The timing of the fare was from 11 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. I pick up the Hunger Games by Suzzane Collins. It is a thrilling and dystopian novel. I am certain that you must have visited a book fair in your city too and it would bring me great delight to learn about your experiences in your next letter.

Yours affectionately, Nirali

Question: Your friend Sue is a bookworm. You visited a fair recently. Narrate your experience to her in a letter.

Hints: Acknowledge your friend’s reading skills – Give the fair a theme based on genre – list the popular names of authors in that genre – Ask her to share her experiences with you

Rose Valley, Kolkata

21st April 2022

I hope my letter finds you in the pink of your health. I miss going to book fairs with you. Your voracious reading skills always made the exploration of new genres more interesting for me. I visited a book fair last weekend, and I would love to give you a very inside full sensory experience and a vivid description of it in this letter.

The book fair was unique as it only contained books of mystery, thriller and suspense. Our favourite author Dan Brown had a whole segment to himself. J.K. Rowling, Anton Chekhov and Douglas Adams were among the highlights. This book fair was special due to its organisation. The management team did a commendable job. A volunteer stood at every corner who would not allow people to spend more than 5 minutes at a single stall. He was also well worst with the books and the authors. He helped us in selecting the book by understanding our needs and interests. I bought The Lost Symbol and the Inferno from the stall.

Write about the books you have recently read and recommend some of the authors to me. I love to hear the descriptions from you. If you too visited a book fair, share your experiences with me.

Yours lovingly, Riythisa

Question: Write a letter to your friend John narrating to him about a book fair during Bengal Literary Week.

Hints: Ask about his health – Mention the venue and occasion – Give it a theme – Describe your journey as a reader – Pay your respect to his parents

7C Newtown, Kolkata

14 September 2022

How have you been? I’ve been well. You always had a reputation as a bookworm, and I visited this grand bookfair in my city yesterday. I can’t wait to tell you all about it in person. However, I shall share pieces of my experience with you today in this letter.

I recently visited a book fair at Newtown. It was the West Bengal Literary Week. Many renowned authors such as Ruskin Bond and Sudha Murthy were chief guests. There were many stalls. It was not easy to visit all the stalls in one go. The stalls were divided based on continents. I learnt the name of many renowned authors as well as indigenous authors.

As you know, books take us to a whole new world. I am very fond of reading. I like to maintain a journal of all the books I have read. I have written many reviews as well. I post them on Goodreads. All the books smell like they were just written and brought out from the factory. The book covers were so captivating that I often got lost staring at them.

If you have been to any book fair recently in your city, I would be delighted to learn about it. Give my warm regards to my uncle and aunt.

Yours lovingly,

You are Nikita. You visited a book fair recently and bought a play by Shakespeare. Write a reply letter to your friend Ira who told you about Shakespeare’s plays. Share your experience as a reader.

Hints : Acknowledge your friend’s talents – Comment on Shakespeare – Pick up one play and one character from that play – Describe your experience – Give some reading suggestions

I got so turned up when you told me about the recent books you have read that I visited a book fair in my city with my parents and bought those gems too. In this letter, I’ll tell you about my favourite excerpts from those books.

Since you mentioned Shakespeare, and everyone knows the bard, I decided to read Macbeth. The plays have always interested me. But Macbeth tops the list. I was particularly fascinated by Lady Macbeth’s character. The power and enthusiasm she portrays at the beginning of the play to her transition as a fragile and low-spirited woman at the end are powerful and marvellous. She is often recognised as the fourth witch, but the humane in her takes the better half as she takes her life by the end of the play.

If you have any more new recommendations for plays, don’t forget to write to me about them. Meanwhile, you can read Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. It’s a fascinating subject. You will be delighted. Give my love and respect to your parents.

Yours affectionately, Nikita
