Additionally, the adult contents that are freely available on the internet share unwanted and wrong information about sexuality and related things.

Impact on the health:

Apart from these, the continuous use of the internet can cause lifestyle disorders not only for the children but also for adults. Sitting in front of the computer for a prolonged time can affect your eyesight, cause obesity and related disorders. People tend to lose their productive time and get addicted to internet surfing. Such usage is considered as another major disadvantage of the internet because it hampers the productive time and quality time in the workplace and at home.

Depression:

Although the internet is extensively used in the workplace, it can cause depression in human minds. Considering the availability of internet and VPN with which you can access your office materials from anywhere, a working person is expected to be available for the job throughout the day and night. These facilities, in the long run, can cause depression waves not only in the minds of those who work but also in the minds of those who are dependent on these working personnel. Spending quality time with our loved ones reduce to a greater extent. People tend to become more mechanical and there is a definite loss of emotions.

Although there are several advantages associated with the internet, we are also able to witness the horrendous disadvantages of the internet and its usage in all walks of life. It’s high time that we realize that technological advancements are like a double-edged sword and should be used wisely to live a quality life.

The internet has become a significant part of our lives today and has made our lives so much comfortable that it is really hard to live without it.

Internet can be technically defined as,

‘A large network of computer systems that are inter-connected through satellites, optical cables and telephone lines’.

Although the internet usage began in 1969, it got revolutionized during 1990s. This essay will talk about the key role played by internet today and at the same time how it is being misused.

Role of Internet in Today’s World:

Today internet is used by school students as well senior citizens. Users from different backgrounds get benefited with the help of internet in different ways.

i. The important advantage of using internet and why internet is so powerful today is because of the access it provides to information. The biggest search engines like Google and Yahoo helps us gather information from any part of the world within seconds.

ii. Internet is a boon to the student community . With the help of internet, students are able to save the time that they spend in a library to retrieve information for their projects.

iii. Business people are exploring internet in the maximum way possible. They use internet to build up their business through social media marketing and digital marketing .

iv. Just by the click of a mouse we are able to communicate face to face with a friend, relative or a business client even if they are thousand miles away.

v. What not? Today people order their favourite food and buy the latest fashion apparels sitting at home. This would not have been possible without internet.

Misusing Internet:

Man invented internet as a tool to make his life easier. But many are getting deviated from this concept and misusing it.

i. Data and information are the main benefits of having internet; since this can be obtained in large amount, some are using them in illegal ways .

ii. Over usage of internet is seen as a risk among children . The children who spend a huge amount of time using internet starts living in a virtual world and are losing their ability to communicate to others directly.

iii. There are endless games on the internet that make students lose their interest in studies .

iv. Many people misuse Facebook, Instagram and other social media websites to attract women and abuse them .

v. Internet hackers are growing day by day and this is a great threat to the business world as well as to common people.

There was a time when people felt that the internet was another world, but now people realize it’s a tool that we use in this world – Tim Berners-Lee.

It is good if people limit their internet usage for their own welfare instead of complicating it and experience its negative impact. Man should always own technology and never allow technology to overpower him.

Internet can be used as a boon as well as a curse. It is up to us to make the right choice.

Internet can simply be said to be a network that is global and connects a lot of computers from all around the world. The internet has evolved to become very easy and simple in the accomplishment of all our everyday activities that were extremely difficult to manage and time consuming in the past. Our lives would be totally unthinkable and unimaginable without the invention of the internet. Everything in life has a positive and negative side, so also the internet has its cons and pros. The internet has totally impacted our lives in both positive and negative ways and I will be discussing some of the effects the internet has had on us.

The internet has made online communication very simple and easy. A long time before the advent of the internet, the means of communication was through letters which took time to deliver because of the distance of travel and also cost of money. Nowadays, we can send messages and connect to someone on the other side of the world just by connecting our devices to the internet and opening one of the various social websites we have now and our messages will be delivered within a few seconds.

The invention of the internet has drastically reduced and cut down the consumption of paper and the use of paper works in schools, government offices, colleges, non-governmental offices, educational institutions, shops, industries, businesses, railways, training centres and universities to a very large extent through computerising almost everything. We can get informed about all of the happenings and news all over the world within seconds in one place.

The internet is a very efficient and effective tool for gathering large information that one might require on whatever topic within a very few seconds. The internet has helped the business, travel and education sector develop by putting all needed information out there. The access to public libraries can now be gotten online and there are tons of textbooks and other papers and resources on any and every topic on the internet.

Before the internet, people wasted a lot of time on various issues that might seem absurd today. There were no online stores so one had to the go to the mall personally if he/she needed something. People had to wait in long lines to get something as simple as a travel ticket. Nowadays, we can book a train or a plane ticket online with just a very few clicks without any stress and we can printout our travel ticket or just download a softcopy of the ticket on our mobile.

Meetings and conferences have been made easier by the internet as we don’t have to travel for business meetings or any other business related matter. Meetings can be organised, arranged and carried out from the comfort of our offices through conferencing, video calling, skype or any of the other brilliant tools available. The internet has helped improved many facets of our lives and the society and no matter what the negative effects of the internet are, the pros outweigh the cons.

The internet and cyberspace is one of the greatest inventions of modern times. We are able to accomplish a lot of things with the help of the internet. Lots of discoveries and inventions have come to place due to the ever helpful hand of the internet also referred to as the network of all networks. It curtails private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope. It is the system of interconnected computers.

The internet can be said to be one of the blessings to mankind, but can this blessing also be a curse? Many have praised the benefits that the internet has brought to mankind, some even refer to the internet as a god, but can this statement be attested due to the contrary belief some people have of the internet being a curse to humanity. This can be said to be either true or false because people would see it in various perspectives.

We try to dismiss the disadvantages of the internet based on the enormous catalogue of its benefits, some of us also try to cast out the merits of the internet due to the way its demerits have affected us in one way or the other.

Let’s try to look at some of the blessings the internet has brought to us and try to look at the curse aligned with it:

1] Education – The internet has blessed the educational system due to the easiness it has brought to the teaching and learning situation. It has brought about an easy scope of the curriculum. Since the internet is a wide encyclopedia of information, students have found it easy in researching topics, assignments and projects. Teachers have benefitted from it because it has increased their knowledge base. Looking at these good benefits, we might want to dismiss the fact that the internet have served as a great factor of distractions. The internet contains a lot of things that can keep students away from their studies.

2] Business transactions have being made easy through online shopping sites, online banking and so on. Before the dawn of the internet, activities of such were strenuous and quite excruciating but the network of all networks has made everything within our fingertips. This medium has also created a black hole of internet scams and frauds. Through the availability of just a few details, a hacker can transfer all funds in a person’s account. This is a very disheartening case. Notwithstanding, the internet made these strenuous activities quite easy.

3] The internet has also made an easy way to access contacts of lost friends and families that you have not seen for a very long time. You can chat with them online and also pass along important information which can be sometimes life determining. This merit is life changing because it has brought together many lost ones and saved a lot of lives mentally, psychologically, socially and emotionally. This gave way for fraudsters to scam people pretending to be who they are not.

We cannot really say the internet is a blessing or a curse because it has its merits and its demerits and let us not forget the saying that goes thus ‘behind every blessing is a curse’.

Some of the moral values have become diluted through the use of internet while some have been built. Aspects of society including economy, culture, politics and religion have all been impacted by the use of internet. Internet use in the 21 st century has grown rapidly and more impacts have been realized.

Communication platforms provided by the internet consist of interconnected networks that use standardized communication protocols. The art of communication has greatly been influenced by the internet such that people can communicate across continents without much struggle.

The History of Internet:

The internet began with the idea of creating a wide area network in 1950s during the development of electronic computers. In 1960s, the use of internet was initiated through communication. Communication protocols were established and then a network of computers was developed using internetworking, which expanded because networks were joining one after the other. The standard networking protocol was therefore established.

Internet service providers were established in 1980s and that is when the journey of internet communication began. Networking started to grow through different means of communications e.g., telecommunications, electronic mail and social networking. Up to date, the progress made has been significant and advancements continue to be made in the communication aspect of networking.

Impacts of the Internet on Society:

The society has been impacted both positively and negatively by the internet. The intellect of the society has transformed through the use of internet because technological links have availed the networks and websites for learning. Through intellectual individuals, the society has become stronger over the years and more powerful due to the knowledge they possess.

Changes have taken place economically, socially and politically through the influence of the internet. Economic development has been influence by the internet because of the communication and interactions of people of different regions of the world.

The economy has greatly improved through the use of internet because trade and marketing is done over the internet, which enables a broader market to access goods and services. The political changes have been realized because through interaction of leaders from different regions and intellectual development due to the information provided on the websites and communication platforms, better leadership and politics have been realized.

Although the positive impacts of the internet include social development, social lives of individuals have been negatively affected. The use of internet to communicate has exposed individuals to culture, both desirable and undesirable culture. People tend to pick on the undesirable cultures thus social immorality has become a major social issue.

Benefits of Using Internet:

The internet provides communication platforms and information which has been of great benefit to the people in different ways. Education has been made easy because vast of information is provided on the internet in websites like google and it is accessible to whoever is interested. Communication has been simplified through the use of internet through the platforms provided including Facebook, WhatsApp among other platforms. Banking and paying bills services have been availed online and they are efficient and time saving.

Business has been simplified through online marketing and trade, which saves time and enables global participation. Working has become flexible and convenient because companies have structured online platforms for their employees to use instead of manual labor. The internet has enabled automation and complementation of human ability, which has enabled efficiency and reduced the workload.

Disadvantages of Using Internet:

Cyberbullying is one of the social problems that challenges the youth. Cyber-bullying lowers self-esteem of individual and affects their social interaction. Another challenge is cyber hacking. Since most companies and businesses have developed online platforms, the information is stored on the internet and there is risk of hacking and access of information by unauthorized personnel.

Cultural dilution is also a challenge because people tend to copy cultures from other people especially the western culture and they forget about their original culture. Culture has also been affected because immoral behaviour is being experienced due to disregard to moral culture.

To conclude, the internet has brought about a lot of changes in the society. These changes have impacted the society both negatively and positively. The internet challenges should be solved because the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The Internet has flipped around our reality. It has changed correspondences, to the degree that it is presently our favoured mode of regular correspondence. Today, we use the internet in almost every activity. Requesting a pizza, purchasing a TV, imparting a minute to a companion, sending an image over texting, all can be done using the internet.

Apart from this, there are several advantages of the internet in almost every part of our daily lives.

The Darker Side:

Every technology has two sides, the brighter side and the darker one. The Internet also has its share of disadvantages or rather the ill effects which its misuse can lead to. For instance, with the advancements in the internet, there have been advances in cybercrimes as well. The leakage of personal data from Facebook is one such recent example which shows what misuse of the internet can do. Moreover, the increase in crimes related to syphoning of money from bank accounts has shown that how vulnerable we can be while using the internet.

The Internet has, by and large, proved to be useful for mankind. It has brought people and societies closer to each other. Moreover, it has made our lives so easy and fast. However, we must always remain aware of the ill effects of the internet and should follow the guidelines for the government and other agencies while using it.

For instance, we must never keep common passwords for internet banking which could be guessed easily. This is for our own safety, else we may land into trouble someday. Judicious use of the internet is certainly beneficial, although fringe elements of the society also use it to try and harm us. How we keep ourselves protected is related to how we use the internet. So, be careful, don’t use pirated software, follow the rules and the internet is all there to ease your life.

Internet is a communication tool that has enabled the entire world to become like a village. This is because with internet people from all corners of the world can reach each other in less than a minute. Internet was invented, and it required people to have computers to get its access.

With internet, people who work or study abroad can talk to their family members almost anytime. This is due to low cost of making telephone calls through the internet (Abbate, 2000). In fact, internet has saved a lot of resources for both individuals and governments.

This is due to the ease of sending and receiving information from their accomplices or business partners from all over the world. For instance, governments used to spend a lot of money in air tickets as their officials went around the world looking for potential business or development partners. Invention of the internet has made work easy because ministry officials can make deals over internet enabled calls. In addition, today one is able to make video calls with the aid of various internet applications.

This means that the internet is an essential communication tool that has transformed the whole world in terms of accessibility (Aspray, 2008). Development in the internet is continuously advancing as several mobile gadgets have been developed to enable more people to access internet. This ranges from the use of laptops which are portable computers to hand devices such as mobile phones.

Several events led to the advancement of the internet in the world today. All these events revolve around the fact that everyone wanted easy and cheap modes of communication. As the world developed and people started migrating from their homes to other countries and continents in the world, they needed to communicate with people back at home.

Therefore, this led to the advancement in the internet to enable them to communicate effectively with people back at their homes. In addition, the development of the digital world played a crucial role in development and advancement, in internet.

This means that due to the creation of digital images and other effects that could be translated electronically; it was vital to advance internet. This was vital because people required sending and receiving photos and other data through the internet. Many countries in the world came up with strategies of ensuring that computer applications studies are compulsory in their public and private institutions (Hewson, 2002).

The level of computer literacy in the world played a leading role in the advancement of internet as teachers and students wanted to get the information online. In fact, it is easier to get information from internet compared to going through books in the library. This is due to the simple nature of data searching through the search engines in the internet. Internet was advanced to enable professionals to consult on their work from wherever they are in the world without necessarily travelling to hold physical meetings.

Internet has enabled the world to become small in the sense that regardless the distance between people, they can close business transactions effectively. This is because business partners may meet and transact their business in the virtual world through the internet.

For instance, social networks, which are supported by the internet, have created a global scenario where people can mingle and make friends. In fact, strangers are meeting through internet, and if they have common activities they may extend them to their benefits. In addition, people abroad have been able to communicate with their family members and friends without incurring a lot of costs.

Internet has enabled people to shop from anywhere in the world by visiting desired websites. This has happened especially in the motor vehicle business where a consumer accesses motor dealers through the search machines. The customer is able to see various motor vehicles available in the dealers’ yards.

All information regarding vehicles is made available on the internet and upon making the desired choice, negotiations start (Misa, 2011). This maybe in the form of electronic mails, internet enabled phone calls or live chats. When they agree on terms of purchase and shipping the vehicle to customer’s location, payment is done through internet payment systems.

Then the vehicle is shipped to the customer who throughout the process keeps in touch with the dealers through internet. Internet has enhanced learning in universities and other learning institutions by providing easy means of accessing information. In fact, there is a variety of information available in the internet hence allowing students to have access to a lot of knowledge.

Everything that has advantages may be accompanied by several disadvantages. Internet has many advantages, but it also has a dark side of its advancement. There has been cases of internet crimes where people have lost their property and lives to internet friends. This happens where one discloses their information to strangers who purport to be looking for business accomplices (Weber, 2004).

After they get all the necessary information, they get access to bank accounts draining all the money to their accounts. Many people in the world have committed suicide after losing their long saved fortunes to internet conmen. Internet has negatively impacted social lives where young people have been exposed to pornographic materials. These materials have corrupted minds of youths hence causing them to engage in irresponsible sexual behaviors.

As a result, it has led to spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AID among young people. Internet has contributed to increased rate of piracy hence affecting artists (Morozov, 2011). This happens because upon the release of their music and other electronic works of art people send them to the internet making it easy for others to download. This affects their profitability as majority of people who get access to the works of art pay almost nothing.

In addition, people have lost their lives by meeting bandits from the internet. This is where people start up relationships on the internet and upon meeting they may disagree on some things. This might lead to physical confrontation or even to loss of lives in some cases. Therefore, internet users should be careful whenever planning to meet or transact any business with strangers.

Internet has transformed lives of many people in the world today as they can access any information with only a click of a mouse. This means that information sources have been made readily available in the world today. Transacting business with people abroad has become easy with the development of electronic payment systems which are aided by the internet.

People can send pictures and other information through the internet to their loved ones and friends. On the other hand, internet should be used wisely to reduce the rates of social crimes. People have lost their lives and property though internet deals, therefore, caution must be taken to prevent such actions.

The origins of the internet

The origins of the internet are rooted in the USA of the 1950s. The Cold War was at its height and huge tensions existed between North America and the Soviet Union. Both superpowers were in possession of deadly nuclear weapons, and people lived in fear of long-range surprise attacks. The US realised it needed a communications system that could not be affected by a Soviet nuclear attack.

At this time, computers were large, expensive machines exclusively used by military scientists and university staff.

These machines were powerful but limited in numbers, and researchers grew increasingly frustrated: they required access to the technology, but had to travel great distances to use it.

To solve this problem, researchers started ‘time-sharing’. This meant that users could simultaneously access a mainframe computer through a series of terminals, although individually they had only a fraction of the computer’s actual power at their command.

The difficulty of using such systems led various scientists, engineers and organisations to research the possibility of a large-scale computer network.

Who invented the internet?

No one person invented the internet. When networking technology was first developed, a number of scientists and engineers brought their research together to create the ARPANET . Later, other inventors’ creations paved the way for the web as we know it today.

• PAUL BARAN (1926–2011)

An engineer whose work overlapped with ARPA’s research. In 1959 he joined an American think tank, the RAND Corporation, and was asked to research how the US Air Force could keep control of its fleet if a nuclear attack ever happened. In 1964 Baran proposed a communication network with no central command point. If one point was destroyed, all surviving points would still be able to communicate with each other. He called this a distributed network.

• LAWRENCE ROBERTS (1937–2018)

Chief scientist at ARPA, responsible for developing computer networks. Paul Baran’s idea appealed to Roberts, and he began to work on the creation of a distributed network.

• LEONARD KLEINROCK (1934–)

An American scientist who worked towards the creation of a distributed network alongside Lawrence Roberts.

• DONALD DAVIES (1924–2000)

A British scientist who, at the same time as Roberts and Kleinrock, was developing similar technology at the National Physical Laboratory in Middlesex.

• BOB KAHN (1938–) AND VINT CERF (1943–)

American computer scientists who developed TCP/IP , the set of protocols that governs how data moves through a network. This helped the ARPANET evolve into the internet we use today. Vint Cerf is credited with the first written use of the word ‘internet’.

The first use of a computer network

In 1965, Lawrence Roberts made two separate computers in different places ‘talk’ to each other for the first time. This experimental link used a telephone line with an acoustically coupled modem, and transferred digital data using packets.

When the first packet-switching network was developed, Leonard Kleinrock was the first person to use it to send a message. He used a computer at UCLA to send a message to a computer at Stanford. Kleinrock tried to type ‘login’ but the system crashed after the letters ‘L’ and ‘O’ had appeared on the Stanford monitor.

A second attempt proved successful and more messages were exchanged between the two sites. The ARPANET was born.

The life and death of the ARPANET

President Dwight D. Eisenhower formed the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in 1958, bringing together some of the best scientific minds in the country. Their aim was to help American military technology stay ahead of its enemies and prevent surprises, such as the launch of the satellite Sputnik 1, happening again. Among ARPA’s projects was a remit to test the feasibility of a large-scale computer network.

Lawrence Roberts was responsible for developing computer networks at ARPA, working with scientist Leonard Kleinrock. Roberts was the first person to connect two computers. When the first packet-switching network was developed in 1969, Kleinrock successfully used it to send messages to another site, and the ARPA Network—or ARPANET—was born.

Once ARPANET was up and running, it quickly expanded. By 1973, 30 academic, military and research institutions had joined the network, connecting locations including Hawaii, Norway and the UK.

As ARPANET grew, a set of rules for handling data packets needed to be put in place. In 1974, computer scientists Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf invented a new method called transmission-control protocol, popularly known as TCP/IP , which essentially allowed computers to speak the same language.

After the introduction of TCP/IP, ARPANET quickly grew to become a global interconnected network of networks, or ‘Internet’.

The ARPANET was decommissioned in 1990.

What is packet switching?

‘Packet switching’ is a method of splitting and sending data. A computer file is effectively broken up into thousands of small segments called ‘packets’—each typically around 1500 bytes—distributed across a network, and then reordered back into a single file at their destination. The packet switching method is very reliable and allows data to be sent securely, even over damaged networks; it also uses bandwidth very efficiently and doesn’t need a single dedicated link, like a telephone call does.

The world’s first packet-switching computer network was produced in 1969. Computers at four American universities were connected using separate minicomputers known as ‘Interface Message Processors’ or ‘IMPs’. The IMPs acted as gateways for the packets and have since evolved into what we now call ‘routers’.

Packet switching is the basis on which the internet still works today.

What is TCP/IP?

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The term is used to describe a set of protocols that govern how data moves through a network.

After the creation of ARPANET, more networks of computers began to join the network, and the need arose for an agreed set of rules for handling data. In 1974 two American computer scientists, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf, proposed a new method that involved sending data packets in a digital envelope or ‘datagram’. The address on the datagram can be read by any computer, but only the final host machine can open the envelope and read the message inside.

Kahn and Cerf called this method transmission-control protocol (TCP). TCP allowed computers to speak the same language, and it helped the ARPANET to grow into a global interconnected network of networks, an example of ‘internetworking’—internet for short.

IP stands for Internet Protocol and, when combined with TCP, helps internet traffic find its destination. Every device connected to the internet is given a unique IP number. Known as an IP address, the number can be used to find the location of any internet-connected device in the world.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is the internet’s equivalent of a phone book, and converts hard-to-remember IP addresses into simple names.

In the early 1980s, cheaper technology and the appearance of desktop computers allowed the rapid development of local area networks (LANs). An increase in the amount of computers on the network made it difficult to keep track of all the different IP addresses.

This problem was solved by the introduction of the Domain Name System (DNS) in 1983. DNS was invented by Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel at the University of Southern California. It was one of the innovations that paved the way for the World Wide Web.

The beginnings of email

Email was a rapid—but unintended—consequence of the growth of ARPANET. As the network increased in popularity and scope, users quickly realised the potential of the network as a tool for sending messages between different ARPANET computers.

Ray Tomlinson , an American computer programmer, is responsible for electronic mail as we know it today. He introduced the idea that the destination of a message should be indicated using the @ symbol, which was first used to distinguish between the individual user’s name and that of their computer (i.e. user@computer). When DNS was introduced, this was extended to [email protected] .

Early email users sent personal messages and began mailing lists on specific topics. One of the first big mailing lists was ‘SF-LOVERS’ for science fiction fans.

The development of email showed how the network had transformed. Rather than a way of accessing expensive computing power, it had started to become a place to communicate, gossip and make friends.

Early home computers

From the 1970s onwards, the home computer industry grew exponentially. The uptake of home computers was not necessarily driven by users’ needs or a computer’s functionality; early machines could actually do relatively little. The appeal to the consumer was the idea of becoming part of the ‘Information Revolution’. Computers were embedded with the rhetoric of the future and learning, but in most cases this meant learning to program so that people could actually make the technology do something, such as play games.

The invention of DNS, the common use of TCP/IP and the popularity of email caused an explosion of activity on the internet. Between 1986 and 1987, the network grew from 2,000 hosts to 30,000. People were now using the internet to send messages to each other, read news and swap files. However, advanced knowledge of computing was still needed to dial in to the system and use it effectively, and there was still no agreement on the way that documents on the network were formatted.

The internet needed to be easier to use. An answer to the problem appeared in 1989 when a British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee submitted a proposal to his employer, CERN, the international particle-research laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. Berners-Lee proposed a new way of structuring and linking all the information available on CERN’s computer network that made it quick and easy to access. His concept for a ‘web of information’ would ultimately become the World Wide Web.

The launch of the Mosaic browser in 1993 opened up the web to a new audience of non-academics, and people started to discover how easy it was to create their own HTML web pages. Consequently, the number of websites grew from 130 in 1993 to over 100,000 at the start of 1996.

By 1995 the internet and the World Wide Web were established phenomena: Netscape Navigator, which was the most popular browser at the time, had around 10 million global users.

How is the World Wide Web different from the internet?

The terms ‘World Wide Web’ and ‘internet’ are often confused. The internet is the networking infrastructure that connects devices together, while the World Wide Web is a way of accessing information through the medium of the internet.

Tim Berners-Lee first proposed the idea of a ‘web of information’ in 1989. It relied on ‘hyperlinks’ to connect documents together. Written in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), a hyperlink can point to any other HTML page or file that sits on top of the internet.

In 1990, Berners-Lee developed Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and designed the Universal Resource Identifier (URI) system. HTTP is the language computers use to communicate HTML documents over the internet, and the URI, also known as a URL, provides a unique address where the pages can be easily found.

Berners-Lee also created a piece of software that could present HTML documents in an easy-to-read format. He called this ‘browser’ the ‘WorldWideWeb’.

In 1994 Andreesen formed Netscape Communications with entrepreneur Jim Clark. They led the company to create Netscape Navigator, a widely used internet browser that at the time was faster and more sophisticated than any of the competition. By 1995, Navigator had around 10 million global users.

The first test of RAND’s design was in 1957, when a team of graduate students at UCLA sent a message from one computer to another at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The message read simply: “Lo.” It was the first ever Internet communication.

In the 1960s, packet-switching technology was adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense for use in its own communications network, which came to be known as ARPANET. ARPANET’s original purpose was to link together military computers and share information between them. But as more and more universities and research laboratories were connected to ARPANET, it became clear that this new network had much wider implications.
