Adrishyam Review: An excruciatingly ‘twisted’ thriller

Thrillers are aplenty in Malayalam cinema these days. Zac Harriss’ directorial debut ‘Adrishyam’ is the latest entrant to the club. The film, set in Chennai, has the look and flavour of a Tamil thriller. It must be noted that the film was shot simultaneously in Tamil (titled Yugi) and Malayalam, with different set of actors. While the female actors in both versions are the same, the men differ. In Tamil, Kathir, Natty, and Narain play the lead roles. Sharafudheen replaces Kathir and Joju George reprises Natty’s role in Malayalam. Narain is part of both ‘Adrishyam’ and ‘Yugi’. However, most of the dialogues are in Tamil. Even when the characters speak in Malayalam, the lip sync doesn’t always match. But these are all secondary problems. Before that, let’s jump into plot.

A top-level police officer entrusts a private detective with the task of finding a girl. Narain plays the detective who investigates about the missing girl. Athmiya Rajan plays his subordinate. Sharafudheen is a suspended sub inspector who is also part of the team. In another track, three men investigate about the same girl. Anything more would be spoilers, as the film has multiple twists and turns.

While twists in a film are supposed to enthrall the audience, here it feels suffocating. Some of them are simply for the sake of tricking (fooling) the audience. Moreover, most of these supposed suspense elements and twists are extremely predictable. It is Sharafudheen and Joju who make it watchable with their performance. The former in particular is really good, as he shows glimpses of a hero material, which has not yet been explored.

Without any emotional connect with the characters and a complete lack of coherence, ‘Adrishyam’ is a total mess that’s unnecessarily complicated.

Surrogate parenthood is given the sledgehammer treatment in this awful Malayalam-Tamil bilingual about a bunch of ill-conceived characters who suffer and suffer, but not as much as we do.

I asked myself at least 6-7 times, should I give up, use this time to do something more creative, like digging a trench or blowing bubbles?

Adrishyam is ample proof that not all work being done in Malayalam cinema is worth our while.The screenplay strewn with outrageous twists and turns, includes a woman Karthika (Anandhi) who is held captive by a despicable rich man and a lady doctor (played by Vinodhini Vaidyanath whose only brief from the director seems to be, ‘Act evil’) to become a surrogate mother.

Surrogacy is reduced to a cheap gimmick in this tasteless tacky ‘thriller’ where good actors like Joju George and Sharafudheen struggle to inject some sense in the persistently nonsensical content.The latter plays a man in search of a missing person. He should have looked for the screenwriter before accepting this rudderless ratpoison of a film.

In hindsight I seriously wonder why I sat through what is clearly a fractured cut-and-paste job with the plot moving in a bipolar direction from a thriller to a sloppy surrogacy drama , falling between the two themes with a loud thud.

There are so many loose ends and losers in the plot, the film feels like a feedinground for malnourished homeless destitute crammed into a shelter.

I still don’t know what Joju George plays and ehat is Pratap Pothen playing a disgraced cop is doing in the film.He is not up to any good. Just like the debutant director Zac Harris who it seems has watched Drishyam multiples times. He still doesn’t get it.

Whoever decided to make Adrishyam as a companion piece to the much-loved Drishyam needs to be shaken by the shoulder to be reminded that the first rule of making a thriller is a thrilling plot concept. Adrishyam is as thrilling as molar surgery that doesn’t dig deep enough.

Joju George, Narain-starrer ‘Adrishyam’ to hit screens in November

Big budget movie ‘Adrishyam’ which is simultanouelsy being shot in Malayalam and Tamil will be released in November. The makers have released the poster of the film that boasts of an ensemble star cast of Joju George, Narain and Sharafudeen in the lead roles.

Meanwhile, in the Tamil version, ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ fame Kathir, Narain and Natti Natarajan essay the main roles. Newcomer Zak Harris is the director of ‘Adrishyam’. The movie is jointly bankrolled by Juvis Production that produced super hit movies like ‘Forensic’ and Kala’, UAN Film House and AAR Productions.

Kayal Anandi, Pavithra Lakshmi, Athmeeya Rajan, Prathap Pothen, John Vijay, Munishkant, Sinil Sainudeen, Vinodini, Anjali Rao and Bindu Sajeev too play pivotal roles in the movie.

The movie was extensively shot at various locations in Chennai and Pondicherry. Interestingly, this film is being simultaneously shot in two languages with different actors. In Tamil, the movie has been titled ‘Yuki’. The screenplay is penned by Pakiaraj Ramalingam and Pushparaj Santhosh handles the cinematography. 'Aavesham' Review: Fahadh Faasil hits it out of the park in Jithu Madhavan film

After the success of director 'Romancham', director Jithu Madhavan is back with 'Aavesham'. And this time, he teamed up with the one and only Fahadh Faasil. 'Aavesham' managed to pique everyone's curiosity. And the pre-release teaser where Fahadh Faasil, clad in a towel, did a fun dance, took the expectations to a crescendo. Did 'Aavesham' impress everyone? Let's find out!

Set in Bengaluru, 'Aavesham' revolves around three college students, Bibi, Santhan and Aju, who get enrolled in a college, where they get bullied and ragged by seniors. In order to take revenge, the college students join hands with a local goon Ranga (Fahadh Faasil). How Ranga's involvement in their lives brings a change forms the story.

Director Jithu Madhavan's 'Aavesham' is a mad-cap entertainer with exceptional performances. The action comedy deals with a simple storyline and that's where its beauty lies. The filmmaker doesn't waste time in showing how Ranga became a goon and concentrates on his unique character traits. It is the comedy that works to a major extent for the film.

The filmmaker concentrates on character arcs and makes them interesting for the audience. While the second half lags in terms of content, Jithu Madhavan redeems himself with the climax. Also, let's not forget the intermission, which was a perfect theatrical moment.

The title credits of 'Aavesham' 're-introduce' Fahadh as Ranga and you will know why. As Ranga, Fahadh Faasil has wonderfully portrayed the dynamic character. Initially, his character looks like a ruffian with a comedic sense. However, there is more than what meets the eye, and you will know as the story progresses. His 'eda mone' and many antics make this character quite enjoyable and entertaining.

Accompanying Ranga is Sanjin Gopu's character, Amban, whose one-liners become major contributors to comedy in 'Aavesham'. Together, they're a riot. Similarly, young actors Hipster, Roshan Shanavas and Mithun Jai Sankar ease into their roles, making the film intriguing.

If Fahadh Faasil's performance is a major asset to 'Aavesham', composer Sushin Shyam's music is yet another aspect that adds beauty to the wild ride. Cinematographer Sameer Thahir and editor Vivek Harshan complement each other in enhancing the effectiveness of 'Aavesham'.

'Aavesham' is truly an enjoyable affair with brilliantly choreographed action sequences and comedy sequences. If you're a fan of Fahadh Faasil, then 'Aavesham' will prove why you became his fan in the first place. 3.5 out of 5 stars for 'Aavesham'. కానీ జాన‌కి హ‌త్య చేసింద‌నే వార్త మీడియాలో హైలైట్ అవుతుంది. వివేక్‌ను తాను, సీఐ క‌రుణ‌న్ క‌లిసి చంపిన‌ట్లు మీడియా ముందు చెబుతుంది జాన‌కి. వివేక్‌ను చంపి పాతిపెట్టిన ప్లేస్‌కు జాన‌కితో పాటు వెళ‌తారు పోలీసులు. అక్క‌డ వివేక్ డెడ్‌బాడీ కాకుండా ఓ చ‌ర్చి ఫాద‌ర్‌తో పాటు జాన‌కి ల‌వ‌ర్ అశ్విన్ (సిద్ధార్థ్ మీన‌న్‌) డెడ్‌బాడీలు దొరుకుతాయి.

లేడీ ఓరియెంటెడ్ క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌...

లేడీ ఓరియెంటెడ్ క‌థాంశాల‌తో కూడిన‌ క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ సినిమాలు చాలా అరుదుగా సిల్వ‌ర్‌స్క్రీన్‌పై వ‌స్తుంటాయి. అదృశ్యం అలాంటి మూవీనే. అవినీతిప‌రుడైన ఓ పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ చేస్తోన్న కుట్ర‌ల‌కు ఓ యువ‌తి త‌న తెలివితేట‌ల‌తో ఎలా చెక్ పెట్టింద‌న్న‌దే ఈ మూవీ క‌థ‌. త‌మ రాజ‌కీయ ఎదుగుద‌ల, స్వార్థం కోసం ప్ర‌భుత్వ అధికారుల‌ను పొలిటిక‌ల్ లీడ‌ర్స్ ఎలా వాడుకుంటారు? అవ‌స‌రం తీరిన త‌ర్వాత వారిని ఎలా వ‌దిలించుకుంటారు? వృత్తి నిర్వ‌హ‌ణ‌లో పోలీసులపై రాజ‌కీయ‌నాయ‌కుల‌ ఒత్తిడులు ఎలా ఉంటాయ‌న్న‌ది ఈ క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ క‌థ‌లో అంత‌ర్లీనంగా చూపించాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌.

అదృశ్యం(Adhrushyam Movie Review) ఓ సాదాసాదీ రివేంజ్ డ్రామా మూవీ. త‌న ప్రియుడి మ‌ర‌ణానికి కార‌ణ‌మైన పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్‌పై ఓ యువ‌తి ఎలా రివేంజ్ తీర్చుకుంద‌న్న‌దే ఈ సినిమా క‌థ‌. ఈ సింపుల్ స్టోరీని స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే టెక్నిక్‌తో చివ‌రి వ‌ర‌కు ఎంగేజింగ్‌గా న‌డిపించాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌. ఏ మాత్రం సంబంధం లేని ఇద్ద‌రు వ్య‌క్తుల డెడ్‌బాడీస్ ఒకే చోట ఎలా దొరికాయి? వారిని హ‌త్య చేసింది ఎవ‌ర‌న్న‌ది ఎక్క‌డ ఉత్కంఠ వీడ‌కుండా ట్విస్ట్‌లు, ట‌ర్న్‌ల‌కు స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేను అల్లుకున్నాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌. ఆ మ‌లుపులు అన్ని థ్రిల్లింగ్‌ను క‌లిగిస్తాయి.

పోలీస్ అన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్‌...

మినిస్ట‌ర్ ఇంట్ర‌డ‌క్ష‌న్ సీన్‌తోనే అదృశ్యం సినిమా ప్రారంభ‌మ‌వుతుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాత పోలీస్ స్టేష‌న్‌కు వ‌చ్చిన జాన‌కి తాను ఓ హ‌త్య చేశాన‌ని పోలీసుల‌కు లొంగిపోయే సీన్ నుంచి అస‌లు క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. వివేక్ శవం క‌నుగొన‌డానికి వ‌చ్చిన పోలీసుల‌కు జాన‌కి ట్విస్ట్ ఇచ్చే సీన్ నుంచి నెక్స్ట్ ఏం జ‌రుగ‌బోతుందో అనే ఇంటెన్స్ క్రియేట్ చేస్తూ క‌థ‌ను ముందుకు న‌డిపించాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌.

ఎస్‌పి ఇన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్‌లో అస‌లైన హంత‌కుడు ఎలా బ‌య‌ట‌పెట్టాడు? ఈ హ‌త్య‌ల‌కు క‌రుణ‌న్‌తో పాటు మినిస్ట‌ర్‌కు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏమిట‌న్న‌ది రివీల్ అయ్యే ఎపిసోడ్స్ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి. హ‌రీష్ ఉత్త‌మ‌న్ ఇన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్ సీన్స్‌ను హీరోయిజం తో కాకుండా నిజంగానే ఓ పోలీస్ ఇన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్ లో నాయ‌కుల నుంచి ఎలాంటి ఒత్తిడులు ఉంటాయి, త‌మ అధికార బ‌లంతో సామాన్యుల‌ను నేరంలో ఇరికించేందుకు ఎలాంటి ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు జ‌రుగుతాయ‌న్న‌ది చూపించారు.

ആദ്യാവസാനം ആവേശം നിറയുന്ന ഒരു ഫുൾ എൻർജി പടം. അതാണ് ആവേശം. യുവാക്കളുടെ വൈബിൽ അവരുടെ എനർജി ലെവലുമായി യോജിക്കും വിധം ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്ന സിനിമ. ബെംഗളൂരിൽ പഠനത്തിനായി എത്തിയ കുറച്ചു വിദ്യാർഥികൾ രംഗ എന്ന ഗ്യാങ്സ്റ്ററെ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നതും തുടർന്നുണ്ടാകുന്ന സംഭവങ്ങളുമാണ് കഥാപശ്ചാത്തലം. കോമഡിയും ആക്ഷനും ഇട കലർത്തി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സിനിമ തിയറ്ററിൽ തീർക്കുന്നതും വലിയ ആവേശം. 

മികവുകൾ ∙ ഫഹദ് ഫാസിൽ – Re-introducing FaFa എന്ന ടാഗ് ലൈൻ അതേപടി ശരി വയ്ക്കും പ്രകടനം. സൈക്കോ ഷമ്മിയെ വെല്ലുന്ന സൈക്കോയ്ക്കും അപ്പുറമായ രംഗ. ആദ്യ ഷോട്ട് മുതൽ അവസാന ഷോട്ട് വരെ ഒരേ എനർജി. അങ്ങേയറ്റം ഹൈപ്പർ ആയ ഇയാൾ അടുത്ത നിമിഷം എന്തു ചെയ്യുമെന്നുള്ള ആകാംക്ഷയാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകനെ നയിക്കുന്നത്. ഫൈറ്റ് സീനുകളിലെ മെയ്‌വഴക്കം അസാധ്യം. ലൗഡ് ആയുള്ള ഡയലോഗ് ഡെലിവറിയും മാസ് മാനറിസങ്ങളും കഥാപാത്രത്തിനു പൂർണമായും യോജിക്കുന്നത്. 

∙ സുഷിൻ ശ്യാം – പാട്ടുകളും പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതവുമാണ് ആവേശത്തിന്റെ സീൻ മാറ്റുന്നത്. രണ്ടും രണ്ടായി വേർതിരിച്ചറിയാൻ പറ്റാത്ത വിധം ഒന്നിച്ചു ചേർത്ത് കോർത്തിണക്കിയാണ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രേക്ഷകനെ ഒരു റോളർ കോസ്റ്റർ റൈഡ് ലൂപ്പിൽ കയറ്റി വിടുന്നതു പോലെ തുടക്കം മുതൽ ഒടുക്കം വരെ ഒരേ വൈബ്. തന്റെ മുൻ സിനിമകളിലെ പോലെ പല രംഗങ്ങളും സുഷിൻ തന്റെ സംഗീതം കൊണ്ട് എലിവേറ്റ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത് കാണാം. 

കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിന്റെ രസക്കൂട്ട്; ‘വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം’ റിവ്യു

∙ ഫൈറ്റ് – കണ്ടു മടുത്ത ഫൈറ്റ് സീനുകളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തം. ഇന്റെർവെല്ലിന് മുൻപും ക്ലൈമാക്സിലുമുള്ള ഫൈറ്റ് സീനുകൾ എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടവ. 100 പേരെ ഇടിച്ചിടുന്ന സീനൊക്കെ മറ്റു പല സിനിമികളിലും അവതരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ‘കത്തി’ എന്നു പറയാനാകാത്ത വിധമാണ് ആവേശത്തിൽ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. 

∙ ഫസ്റ്റ് ഹാഫ് – ഒരു സിനിമയാക്കാനുള്ള കഥയുണ്ട് ഫസ്റ്റ് ഹാഫിൽ. അതു മാത്രമായി കണ്ടിറങ്ങിയാലും ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ട സംതൃപ്തിയുണ്ടാകും. ഒരു തരി പോലും ലാഗ് അടിപ്പിക്കാത മാസിനു മാസും കോമഡിക്കു കോമഡിയുമായി ഒരു വെൽ പാക്ക്ഡ് എന്റെർടെയിനർ തന്നെയാണ് ആദ്യ പകുതി. 

∙ സജിൻ ഗോപു – രംഗയുടെ വലം കൈയ്യായ അമ്പാനായി എത്തിയ സജിൻ ഒരു രക്ഷയുമില്ലാത്ത പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ച വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇടയ്ക്ക് രോമാഞ്ചത്തിലെ കഥാപാത്രവുമായി സാമ്യം തോന്നാമെങ്കിലും പല രംഗങ്ങളിലും സജിൻ ഫഹദിനെ പോലും മറികടക്കും വിധം മിന്നി. സജിന്റെ സിറ്റുവേഷനൽ കോമഡികൾക്ക് തിയറ്ററിൽ ഉയർന്നത് വലിയ പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിയാണ്. 

രോമാഞ്ചം എന്ന ആദ്യ സിനിമയിലൂടെ തന്നെ വരവറിയിച്ച ജിത്തു മാധവൻ രണ്ടാം ചിത്രത്തിലും തന്റെ ക്രാഫ്റ്റ് വെളിവാക്കി. സമീർ താഹിറിന്റെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണ മികവ് എപ്പോഴും എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടതില്ലെങ്കിലും രാത്രി രംഗങ്ങളും ലൈറ്റിങ്ങുമൊക്കെ അതിഗംഭീരമായി ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വിദ്യാർഥികളായെത്തിയ പുതുമുഖങ്ങൾ, മൻസൂർ അലി ഖാൻ, ആശിഷ് വിദ്യാർഥി തുടങ്ങി പ്രത്യേകം പരമാർശിക്കേണ്ട പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ വേറെയുമുണ്ട്. 

മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താവുന്നത്

∙ രണ്ടാം പകുതി – ആദ്യ പകുതിയുമായി താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ രണ്ടാം പകുതി അത്ര മികച്ചതല്ല. പല സീനുകളും തട്ടിക്കൂട്ടി ചെയ്യുന്നതു പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുമെങ്കിലും സേഫ് ആയ ക്ലൈമാക്സിലാണ് സിനിമ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. 

∙ യുവാക്കളാണ് ടാർജറ്റ്, അവർ മാത്രമാണ് ടാർജറ്റ് – 15 മുതൽ 35 വയസ്സു വരെയുള്ളവരെ ലക്ഷ്യം വച്ചുള്ള സിനിമ കുടുംബപ്രേക്ഷകരെ എത്രത്തോളം ആകർഷിക്കുമെന്ന് കാത്തിരുന്ന് കാണേണ്ടി വരും. പക്ഷേ രോമാഞ്ചവും പ്രേമലുവുമൊക്കെ ഹിറ്റായെങ്കിൽ ആവേശത്തിനും ബോക്സ്ഒാഫിസ് ഭരിക്കാം. 

മലയാള സിനിമാ വ്യവസായം അതിന്റെ നല്ല കാലങ്ങളിലൊന്നിലാണിപ്പോൾ. അക്കാലത്ത് കയ്യടിച്ച് പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കേണ്ട സിനിമ തന്നെയാണ് ആവേശം. സ്ഥിരം ഫോർമുലകളിൽനിന്നു മാറാതെ, എന്നാൽ അവതരണരീതിയിൽ മാറ്റം വരുത്തി എത്തുന്ന ആവേശം ബോക്സ് ഒാഫിസ് ബാറ്റൺ കയ്യിലേന്തി കുതിപ്പ് തുടരാനാണ് സാധ്യത.
