COMRADE IN AMERICA MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

CIA: Comrade in America has a story in it which has never been discussed in Malayalam cinema before. It tells the story of a large number of people who try to illegally crossover the Mexican-American border seeking asylum in the United States of America. The film, which is expected to break many Box Office records, is a political/romantic comedy drama where Dulquer Salmaan plays the protagonist Aji Mathew who is a highly motivated Communist Party member from Pala and is forced to go to USA to retrieve his love.

The movie which has Communism as an integral part of its soul, released on May 5th, the 199th birthday of Karl Marx. Directed by Amal Neerad and produced by Ajmal Khalid, the movie has Siddique, Dileesh Pothen, Soubin Shahir, Chandini Sreedharan, John Vijay, Jinu Joseph and Karthika Muralidharan in pivotal roles.

Shibin Francis, the writer of the movie has wandered into the unexplored territories of Malayalam cinema. Amidst all the movies with protagonists travelling miles in search of loved ones, CIA stands tall in current times with its strong and relevant theme. The direction has its highs and lows, but Amal Neerad succeeds in using the star value of Dulquer Salmaan to entertain the viewer. The sequences with Che Guevara, Karl Marx, Stalin and Lenin are a class apart. If the vexatious nature of illegal immigration had been captured on reel with the support of a zealous screenplay written after a more conscientious preparatory research, the movie would have turned out be a classic masterpiece.

Dulquer Salmaan effortlessly transforms into the Pala born Aji Mathew and his performance is undoubtedly the highlight of the movie. The new generation Superstar of Malayalam cinema flawlessly portrays each emotion of Aji Mathew. He is well supported by Siddique, Soubin Shahir and Dileesh Pothan. The lead heroine Karthika Muralidharan, who does not have much to perform in the movie, even though her role is an inevitable part of the script, delivers a pretty average performance.

Gopi Sunder's soundtrack serves its purpose of enhancing the viewers' experience. The cinematography by Renadive efficiently passes on the beauty of various picturesque locations in Nicaragua, Mexico and Kerala. Edits by Praveen Prabhakar blend in well with the background score to project the true spirit of the movie.

The theme of Communism has become the flavour of the season in the Malayalam film industry. After Tovino Thomas’ Oru Mexican Aparatha, Nivin Pauly ’s Sakhavu, Dulquer Salmaan ’s Comrade in America (CIA) romanticises Kerala’s Communism. The title of the film draws inspiration from Che Guevara’s life story. Born in Argentina, he led the revolution in Cuba. Che was captured and killed in an operation led by America’s top intelligence agency, CIA. And the director’s revolutionary vision stops at naming the film. Writer Shibin Francis has not offered an intelligent and engaging war of ideologies between Communism and Capitalism as most of the audience would have assumed based on the first look and teaser of the film.

But, compare to two other above-mentioned films, the setting of director Amal Neerad’s CIA is seemingly politically more relevant both at home and at abroad. Aji Matthew (Dulquer Salmaan) is a popular youth communist leader in Kottayam. He falls for Sarah (Karthika Muralidharan), a US citizen, who is sent to Kerala for education. How often that happens in reality? She hops on to Aji’s motorcycle to rescue herself from boredom in the city that doesn’t offer a lot of entertainment like the US. Her parents and relatives don’t approve of her romantic relationship with Aji and take her back to the US.

With just two weeks to his girlfriend’s wedding, Aji desperately wants to get to the US, so that he can give a happy ending to his love story. The only problem is it is not easy to get a US visa.The story of CIA gets interesting when Aji begins his journey to illegally enter the US through Mexico. The first half of the film is a damp squib with occasional one-liners that draw some cheers and claps from the audience.

The issue of the illegal immigrants is a hot topic in the US. The Trump administration is hell-bent on building a wall along the Mexican border to stop ‘million and millions’ of ‘bad people’ pouring into the country. In reality, sneaking into the ‘land of opportunity’ is not as easy at all. People risk life, dignity and everything in between crossing the US-Mexico border. The struggles, ordeal and sacrifices of these undocumented travellers can be really gut-wrenching. However, CIA spares the audience of many details by not exploring the perils of this journey to its full extent. And that’s a shame.

During one scene, a guide who helps Aji and gang cross the border explains the risks that lay ahead of them in the journey. When he asks the women travellers to keep the condoms handy as there is a high possibility of them getting raped, the audience is quiet and anxious. But people erupt in laughter when the character played by Chandini Sreedharan asks Aji to buy condoms in case he is raped. I’m compelled to point out that the majority of people either think men are immune to sexual violence or find the issue very hard to even fathom or treat it as a joke.

The performances of the actors are pleasing. Dulquer Salmaan, Karthika, Priyanka Nair, Chandini Sreedharan, Soubin Shahir and others have done a convincing job. The director has tried to milk emotions through John Vijay’s character in vain. John fares badly as a Sri Lankan immigrant driving taxi in central America.

Amal has taken an interesting subject but has failed to do justice to it. The director hovers around the generic stuff, making the film less appealing than it already is.

CIA (2017) Malayalam Movie Review by Veeyen

Aji Mathew meanders across a road paved with grey stones in Nicaragua, where a girl dressed in a flaming red poof gown sashays down. This pretty much remains a visual statement on what the film is all about ; how empty it is beyond all the ocular flair that it displays, and how fleeting the impressions that it creates are.

Amal Neerad’s ‘CIA’ is not even remotely a political film, and the Communism that it propagates is as synthetically coloured as the flaming red Che scarf that Aji sports in his brilliantly crafted introductory scene, that firmly establishes that he isn’t just a comrade, but a comrade hero to boot. Wading through a cloud of smoke, he steadily walks towards a wall of policemen, with a petrol bomb in his hands with a raucous remix of ‘Balikudeerangale…’  blaring on.

The goose bump moment over, ‘CIA’ has a stack of foreseeable moments all piled up, with a stale love story and a drag of a road trip following suit. Aji Mathew (Dulquer Salman) walks into a class of junior students and rescues Sarah Mary Kurien (Karthika Muralidharan) from the clutches of a group of hazers. It takes precisely less than thirty seconds for the NRI girl to fall in love with the Comrade who later explains to her that Communism is akin to sharing your lunch with a friend who hasn’t brought lunch. Still not sure if they were being humorous.

With a tagline like ‘How far would you go for love’, it goes without saying that circumstances lead Aji to follow Sarah all the way to the US. Before that though, he ensues in a conversation with Che, Marx and Lenin at the Party office in the dead of the night, and even convinces them to let out a smile, unlike their usual selves. A fantasy scenario that goes totally haywire and stuffed with comatose conversations, this remains one of the lowest points for me in the entire film.

The latter half of the film sees Aji’s journey along a no-man’s land that traverses across Nicaragua and the Honduras and then on to Mexico, from where he hopes to cross over to the US. He joins a group of odd travellers, all of whom have kept their spirits high, and who hope to sneak their way into the dreamland that is the US.

There are the individual back tales that each of these travellers lay out before us, and they contest with one another for being the most pointless one. Especially bizarre is the one narrated by Pallavi (Chandini Sreedharan), who ventures out to cross the Mexican border since she has been denied a Visa by the US. Her intention is to visit the place where her late dad had worked, and to find out the public cemetery where he has been buried. Off she goes hence, armed with a pack of condoms (the larger ones, we are explained), in case she gets raped along the way. The motive and the modus operandi are not likely to get any flimsier, for sure.

As much enlivening as the climactic scene might be, where Aji gets to settle a few scores with aplomb, it remains that this is fast evolving to be a meek formula that the new wave Malayalam cinema has dragged in along with it. And it hammers in the final nail on the coffin, as the comrade sheds red for starched white and walks in to meet his lady love. Period.

Dulquer is at his usual best in ‘CIA’ as well, but the slipshod writing lets down him time and again. Soubin Shahir and Dileesh Pothan bring in some mirth, while Karthika Muralidharan makes a confident debut. Siddique, John Vijay, Chandini Sreedharan and Jinu Joseph are seen in key roles as well. Renadive’s magical frames make the film a visual delight, while Gopi Sundar’s musical score remains at best, adequate.

‘CIA’ looks like a mix up of a film that is headed nowhere. And even at slightly more than a couple of hours, it sounds like an overly drawn-out speech that is cluttered with tons of skeletal thoughts and a plethora of throwaway words that hold no purpose whatsover.

Verdict: Disappointing

Dulquer Salmaan As Aji Mathew

Dulquer Salmaan has delivered a fantastic performance as Aji Mathew. The actor effortlessly portrays both the mass hero and intense lover shades of his character. A special kudos for Dulquer's for pulling off the 'Pala' dialect with absolute ease. He is undoubtedly an actor who shows immense growth with each film.

Direction: Amal Neerad

Amal Neerad makes a partially successful entry into the genre of romance, with CIA . Even though he has totally succeeded in staying away from the shadows of his signature films, the director fails to deliver a film which totally satisfies the audiences.

The romance portions between the lead pair, which has been shown in the first half, lacks the spark. The second half falls into slow pace despite having the scope to be better and the movie rushes towards the climax.

Karthika Muralidharan As Sarah

Karthika Muralidharan makes a decent debut as the leading lady of the movie. She looks absolutely convincing as the NRI girl Sarah, even though she has very less scope to perform.

Supporting Cast

Siddique, who plays Aji Mathew's father, delivers an amazing performance in his brief yet significant role. Soubin Shahir is at his usual best, with some light-hearted comical moments. The rest of the star cast, includinh John Vijay, Sujith Shankar, Jinu Joseph, Chandini Sreedharan, Priyanka Nair, etc., have played their respective parts well.

Script: Shibin Francis

The major drawback of CIA is the loosely packed script, which impresses at a few portions, and fails to create any impact in the rest. The romantic track of Aji and Sarah looks forced and doesn't have enough space to develop. But, the mass elements and light humour in the first half are quite impressive.

When it enters into the second half, the movie falls into slow pace despite having an ample scope to impress. Even though the plot had the scope to impress, the ineffective writing spoils the show.

Cinematography: Ranadive

Like any other signature Amal Neerad film, CIA also highly impresses with the exceptional visualisation. The stunning visuals of Pala and the USA, which have been portrayed in two different colour tones, are totally praiseworthy. DOP Ranadive makes a fantastic debut with the movie and is definitely here to stay.

Music: Gopi Sundar

Gopi Sundar, the National award-winning musician once again impresses with the exceptional background score, with totally goes hand-in-hand with the narrative. The songs stand out with their uniqueness.

Editing: Praveen Prabhakar

Praveen Prabhakar's editing is not up to the marks, as the movie constantly falls into slow pace, especially after the interval.

Other Technical Aspects

Sameera Saneesh, the costume designer has done a brilliant job by designing the perfect look for each character. Tapas Nayak's sound design deserves a special mention.

Overall View

Comrade In America-CIA is a movie which impresses at some points but disappoints in a few others. The loosely-packed script fails to keep the audiences engaged, and leaves them unsatisfied at the end. CIA is definitely not a bad film, but it is a movie which could have been made in a more effective manner.

An average romantic movie to be watched without much expectations.

CIA Comrade in America Is a Malayalam-language adventure film directed by Amal Neerad and starring Dulquer Salmaan and Karthika Muralidharan in the lead roles. The film also stars Siddique, Suresh Gopi, and Soubin Shahir in supporting roles. The story revolves around Aji, a strong communist from Kerala who illegally enters the United States to prevent his girlfriend Sarah's arranged marriage. Aji embarks on a dangerous journey via Latin America to the Mexican border with a group of emigrants. They endure several difficulties, including difficult terrain, hunger, and thirst. They are also continuously on the verge of getting arrested by the authorities. Sarah receives a letter from her parents one day. They inform her that they have arranged for her to marry another man. Sarah is depressed and powerless, but she has no choice but to accept whatever her parents decide. When Aji learns of Sarah's marriage, he is distraught. Aji and the other emigrants eventually make it to the US border, but they are detained and arrested by authorities. Aji gets sent back to India. Aji is a broken man when he returns to Kerala. He has lost his love, but he is still inspired by a group of young communists who are working to aid poor people in need. He decides to join them and begin fighting for his beliefs.
