A full-scale brawl actually broke out during a water polo match between the USSR and Hungary, with police called in to protect the Soviets from the rabid crowd.
Munich, 1972: Perhaps the most tragic moment in Olympic history came 10 days into the 1972 games, when eight Palestinian militants broke into the Olympic Village, killing two Israeli athletes immediately and taking nine others hostage, all of whom died soon after in a botched rescue attempt. The games continued.
Moscow and Los Angeles, 1980 and 1984: The Soviet and U.S. games era saw two consecutive games marred by tit-for-tat no-shows by the Cold War rivals and their allies. Fifty-six nations refused their Olympic invitations in 1980, while nineteen powerhouse Eastern Bloc countries stayed home in 1984, paving the way for American Carl Lewis to dominate in athletics.
Beijing, 2008: When Beijing was awarded the Summer Olympics in 2001, it was considered a big leap forward for the nation, eager to display its progress on a world stage. Controversy marred the lead-up to the games, however, with protesters calling for boycotts of Beijing due to China's involvement in Darfur, Sudan, and ongoing tensions in Tibet, not to mention human rights concerns in China itself. Expecting rallies during the event, organizers in Beijing set up designated "protest zones" for demonstrators to do their thing without disrupting the Olympics.

History will always dissect the politics of the Olympic Games once they're done and in the books, but what is a certainty are some dazzling athletic achievements and at least a few feel-good stories.

Murmurs regarding the decline of the Olympics appear to have been premature. Despite the well-founded critiques, doubts, concerns, and ambivalence before the Tokyo games began, they have provided many compelling moments, stories, and discussion points that have gripped much of the world.

Indeed, many people have expressed surprise at just how much they have become swept up in these games - at how much meaning they have derived from a sporting event that before it began, seemed out of place in a world still grappling with the devastating COVID pandemic.

There’s even a palpable grief for some people at the end of the Olympics, particularly in areas of the world still enduring lockdowns.

In the aftermath of the Tokyo Olympics, it’s worth reflecting on just what kind of meaning the games still generate. What’s at stake in the passions, struggles, triumphs, and heartache that, alongside COVID, have dominated news cycles for the past three weeks?

The power of national glory

The modern Olympics have long been based on the notion that sport is a force for good. Put simply, they still purport to help make the world a better place .

Yet, after the disastrous second and third Olympics in Paris (1900) and St Louis (1904) that were overshadowed by festivals of white supremacy , it was the playing out of national rivalries — and the possibility of national glory — that drove rising public interest in the games.

By 1912, Australians were already so emotionally invested that they raised enough funds to send swimming star Fanny Durack to the Stockholm Olympics.

The modern Olympics had been developed to showcase and celebrate strong, athletic men. But after winning gold in the women’s 100-metre freestyle, Durack became a national hero, as did her silver-medal winning compatriot Mina Wylie (whose family had paid the costs of her travel to the games).

The strange, yet powerful, sense of national achievement – and even vindication — in the deeds of athletes continues to shape much of the ongoing fascination with the Olympics. Australian athletes have had many remarkable performances at the Tokyo Olympics. Like Durack and Wylie before them, Ariarne Titmus, Patty Mills, Jess Fox, Melissa Wu, Peter Bol, and so many others have captivated a nation.

These athletes bring joy, amazement, pride, and inspiration. And they are loved for it. But the Tokyo Olympics have also given us a clearer insight into the costs that such adoration entails.

Love and betrayal

The focus on individual athletes — especially those expected to bring national glory — is intense. Those athletes deemed to have “failed” can quickly find the love they were previously showered with was conditional.

Olympic athletes are loved for what they have done or might do — not (so much) for who they are as people. This adoration is based on the powerful, joyous feelings they can bring and the way their triumphs are vicariously shared.

At issue is a powerful form of identification that can become possessive . For many fans, it feels like the athletes not only represent their nation, but also them as individuals. These fans frequently behave as if what happens to the athlete happens to them . Hence the ecstasy when the athlete achieves greatness .

On the flip side, however, when the expectations of fans are not met, they frequently react as if they have been personally betrayed.

The bitterness, judgement, and even hate directed at Simone Biles when she withdrew from the gymnastics team event was extreme. Although Biles also received an outpouring of support on social media, the racial - and racist - dynamics of the stinging criticism and vilification directed at her were striking .

Many white men in particular seemed personally offended that Biles had prioritised her physical and mental health, saying no to a performance that they had expected would bring them pleasure.

In Australia, Ben Simmons was similarly vilified for withdrawing from the men’s basketball team, as if he had broken an unwritten contract to perform for the nation’s benefit. (In stark contrast, Patty Mills was fulsome in his support of Simmons .)

Even Jess Fox was castigated on social media for “only” winning a bronze medal in the K1 slalom, although her “failure” was quickly forgiven after she won gold in the C1 event.

What (and who) is forgotten

The fervent meaning so many Australians find in Olympic performances regularly disproves the notion we are more interested in watching men play sports than women.

As is frequently the case, most of the Australian heroes of the Tokyo Olympics have been women. And millions of people have tuned in to watch them compete.

Yet, somehow the compelling, thrilling performance of female athletes is conveniently forgotten when questions are raised about why competitions like the AFLW still receives less financial investment and media coverage than AFLM.

Equally disturbing, even in the midst of an Olympics characterised by inspiring feats from Australian women, 80% of the mainstream Australian media’s general sports coverage (across all sporting competitions) still focused on men .

And it is not only the performances of Australian women that are frequently forgotten. The coverage of Rohan Browning’s impressive performance in the men’s 100-metre heats tended to elide the feats of Kaanju man Patrick Johnson , who represented Australia in sprint events in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics.

Johnson not only holds the Australian record for the fastest time in the 100 metres , but remains the only Australian to have run a time under 10 seconds. That he is less well-known than the slower Matt Shirvington (who also competed in the 100 metres at the 2000 Sydney Games) reveals much about Australian race relations.

These Olympics have also raised vital questions regarding the treatment of trans athletes , the problematic policing of gender , and the way gender diversity challenges the strict binary nature of most sporting competitions.

A force for justice?

The relationship of Australia to the First Nations people whose land remains unceded was a focus for the Matildas team who took a photo of themselves behind the Aboriginal flag after arriving in Tokyo.

In doing so, the Matildas were following a long tradition of using the national and international focus on the Olympics to raise (more) vital issues.

Around the same time, the International Olympic Committee was banning its numerous media staff from posting photos of athletes who took a knee before their events in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Although the IOC soon retracted this ban after it drew widespread criticism , it highlighted the organisation’s reluctance for the Olympics to provoke discussions of justice, despite the IOC’s professed commitment for the games to improve the world.

To the IOC’s likely dismay, the anti-protest rule in the IOC charter , which was written in the aftermath of the famous Black power salute at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, is in the news again.

Raven Saunders, a queer, Black American, crossed her raised arms over her head in an “X” after winning the silver medal in the Women’s Shot put. As Saunders later explained, the “X” was “the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet”.

While the IOC suspended their investigation into Saunders after the tragic death of her mother , the matter once again raises questions as to the immense meaning the Olympics generate, and what this meaning might facilitate.

Like many Olympics before it, the Tokyo Games have created compelling sporting moments — when, for a few minutes, it felt like nothing else mattered. The end of the men’s high jump competition, when the two leaders decided to share the gold medal rather than have a jump-off, was celebrated around the world as an act of inspiring sports-personship .

Yet, while the power of the Olympics should not be underestimated, especially when it comes to the public fascination with women’s sports, the IOC should be less frightened of the way the games might promote the need for justice.

Until then, the burden of dealing with, resisting, and making use of the spotlight that comes with the Olympics will fall unequally on the athletes themselves.

History of olympic games.

3000 years before, from now, the ancient games took place in honor of Lord Zeus. It was all started from a town named Olympia near the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. Olympics were first held in 776 BCE. These games were held every 4 years from 8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D. Coroebus was a cook from ancient Greece who first won the first Olympic game, becoming the first-ever Olympic champion by winning a 192-meter race.

The name Olympic is being given due to the place Olympia in Greece from which it has been started. The ancient Olympic Games were put on a stop when the Romans conquered the Greek empire. When the Romans conquered Greece during the mid of the 2nd century B.C. slowly, the standards of the game started to diminish. Moreover, in A.D. 393, the ancient Olympic Games were stopped.

The rise of modern Olympic games

Then it took another 1500 years when in 1896, the first modern Olympic took place in Athens, Greece. It was possible due to the efforts of a Frenchman named Baron Pierre De Coubertin. He was a person who showed a keen interest in the physical enhancement of people and was dedicated to the work of physical education for people. When he first visited the site of the ancient Olympic Games, he came up with a new scheme to start these games again with a different plan. When he went back to France, he arranged a meeting with the sports authority of France in November of 1892. He then managed to create an Olympic community, which was the leading organization that made the Olympics possible again.

The history of modern Olympics

In 1924 it was the first time when the 8th Olympic Games took place in Paris. It was the first time when the Olympics were held anywhere outside Greece. With 100 women and a total of 3000 contestants from around the world took place in those games. The level of the Olympics started to rise. From them, it became a matter of prestige for every country. Every nation desired to be part of the Olympics. Initially, contestants from 14 nations competed in the first modern Olympics.

The United States is becoming the nation to win the maximum number of gold medals (11), and Greece, the hosting nation won the maximum number of overall medals (46). The Olympics held in 1896 were considered the most successful games. It was the game that hosted the maximum number of nations. It became a sign of friendship among those nations. Since then, these games are being organized as a gesture of respect and great camaraderie between different nations around the world. 206 nations in 2016 took part in the Olympic Games that were held in Brazil. Till now, the USA has won the maximum number of medals (2520) in Olympic Games. Baron de Coubertin is known as the father of the modern Olympics.

It was until the year 1994 that summer and winter Olympics used to take place in the same year. Participants from around the world gathered inside the stadium on the day of the opening ceremony of games. These contestants march around the stadium. Greece, due to the original place of the games, is given priority, so the sportsmen from Greece are the first in the march, and the last are from the country in which games are being organized.

Significance of Olympic rings

You must have noticed that the symbol of Olympic has 5 rings with blue, yellow, black, green, and red are the color that comprises the Olympic symbol, which is being represented on a flag. These five rings constitute five continents. The blue ring represents Europe, the yellow ring represents Asia, the black ring represents Africa, the green ring represents Oceania, and the red ring represents America.

Hosting ceremony

On the opening ceremony of the games, several athletes are selected to raise the flag light the Olympic flame. This flame lights up until the last Olympic game. Every sports person who takes part in the game takes an oath, which is commonly known as the Olympic oath. This oath, a vow that every athlete takes that took part in the game, will play its honesty and will perform his best.

The winners are being honored with gold, silver, and bronze medals according to their positions in the game. The medals are being given at the end of every event of games. The athletes are being selected by the sports authority of the respected country to represent their nation, the Olympic Games. It is the duty of the sports authority of the country to select the finest athlete to represent their nation. Whosoever wins at the end of each event medals are given to them with the national anthem of their country being played at the sports arena.

Selection of athletes

It is the duty of the international Olympic committee to make proper arrangements for the games and the arrangement of commute and proper living facilities for the athletes. The places where the contestants stay during the games is known as the Olympic Village. The primary duties of this committee are to look after the safety, living facility, training grounds, transport for the athletes. Management of stadium and living space is also the duty which this committee has to take care of.

These Olympics games are divided into two segments the summer games and the winter games. Summer games generally take place in the summer season, and winter games take place during mid of February.

Black day for Olympics

The 5th of September 1972 is considered as a black day in the history of the Olympics. Many terrorists entered the arena and killed several athletes. These games were held in Munich, Germany.

Only with the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, it was made possible for the Olympics to happen again. We should respect the athletes who sacrifice their comfort and luxury for the respect of their nation, for the peace of the world, and the sake of friendship.

The first Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens in Greece . The aim of the Olympic was to bring together athletes from various countries in order to promote world peace. This aim remains the same even today. The Olympic Games include a variety of individual and team sports.

In 1920, the first Olympic flag was presented. The flag contains five interconnected rings upon a white background. Each of the rings stands for one of the five major continents; they are interconnected to symbolize that the world can work towards peace through this international competition.

The rings are blue, yellow, black, green and red. These colours were chosen because at least one of them appears on the flag of every country in the world.

The Olympic Games are held once in every four years and at different location each time. Two locations are chosen each time-one to host the winter Olympics and the other for the summer Olympics. It’s a very special honour to participate in the Olympic Games.

Participants spend years training for this special event. Qualifying for a spot on the Olympic team varies for each sport. However, dedication, skill, motivation, hard work, and desire to win are a part of the right formula for anyone dreaming of participating in the Olympic Games.

For each event the first three prizes are the gold, silver and bronze medals. In 1896, first prizes were silver medals because gold was considered of lower value than silver. At the Olympic Games at st Louis in 1904, gold replaced silver as the first-place medal.

The gold medals presented today are actually made from sterling silver. They are then covered with a thin coat of pure gold.

Modern Olympic Games

How it works

The modern Olympic games have been around for more than one century. There have been many respectable games throughout this time for many reasons, but one of the most defining Olympics in history are the 1960 Olympic Games. The 1960 Olympics took place in Rome, Italy from August 25 – September 11. The games featured 5,338 athletes competing in 150 events for 83 different countries. The 1960 Olympic games had many firsts for humankind, as well as many great athletes like Cassius Clay, Wilma Rudolph, and Abebe Bikila who all crossed amazing milestone.

In 1960, Cassius Clay was an 18 year old boxer from the United States. He travelled to Rome that year to compete in the Olympics in the light heavyweight division. Despite being so young, he won the gold medal with ease after defeating Poland’s Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, Australia’s Anthony Madigan, and Italy’s Giulio Saraudi. His performance gained him international attention and after the Olympics, Clay turned professional and won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. At about the same time, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Wilma Rudolph was diagnosed with Polio when she was about four years old, and was told she would never walk again.

Despite being told this, she overcame her disease and began to hop, then walk, and eventually be able to play basketball. When she was almost 16 years old, Wilma Rudolph competed in the 1956 Olympics in Australia to and won a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter relay. Four years later, she travelled to Rome for the 1960 games. There, she won gold in the individual 100 meter, individual 200 meter, and the 4×100 meter relay. After winning all of the golds, she was given the title “the fastest woman in the world”. She was also known as one of the greatest athletes in the 20th century because of her performance in Rome.

Abebe Bikila was not originally selected for the 1960 Ethiopian Olympic team, but was asked to join after one of their athletes was injured. Reluctantly, he travelled to Rome in 1960 to compete in the marathon. When Abebe got to Rome, he quickly discovered that none of the shoes there fit him right, so he decided to run the marathon barefoot. Despite this decision, Bikila won the marathon by 200 meters and set a world record in the process. He captured Ethiopia’s first and only Olympic medal at the 1960 Olympics, and also became the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal.

Abebe became the first person to win two consecutive Olympic marathons when he won gold four years later, winning by four minutes and setting another world record. In 1964, he very smartly decided to wear shoes during the race. During the 1960 Olympics, there were many firsts for the world and and for the Olympic Games. To start, the 1960 Olympics were the first games to be televised in all of Europe, and the first to be televised in all of North America. The 1960 Winter Olympics were the first to be televised in the United States, just six months earlier. Italy’s Raimondo D’inzeo and Piero D’inzeo were the first ever pair of brothers to get gold and silver in the same event. Both brothers were also the first athletes to participate in eight Olympic Games.

The greatest first for the Olympics would be that the official Olympic anthem was first played in Rome. This anthem was composed by Spiros Samaras in the late 1800s and has been played at every Olympics since 1960. The 1960 Olympic Games in Rome were one of the most defining Olympics in history for many reasons. Athletes who crossed big milestones like Cassius Clay, Wilma Rudolph, and Abebe Bikila, and the fact that there were so many distinctive firsts is what make the 1960 Olympics so important.

At the same time, the Olympics attract not only sportspersons but also spectators, who are interested in sports and who either attend Olympics in the area, where they take place, or watch the Olympic Games broadcasts.The Olympics have a considerable impact on the development of the personal, national and global identity of people because the Olympic Games are the major event in the sport life of the world and people get involved into the Olympics at all level, from individual participation or involvement into the Olympics to the national and global level when people form and support their national teams and compete with other teams and sportspersons from all over the world. Therefore, the Olympics are socially important events that take place every four year and shape the individual, national and global identity.

Historically, the Olympics were internationally significant event that unite people from all over the world. The Olympics are the major sport event that takes place every four years. The Olympics is the ultimate manifestation of the greatest achievements in the field of sport since every sportsperson participating in the Olympic Games. There are winter and summer Olympic Games which are conducted in winter and summer every four year respectively. Moreover, the Olympics have a considerable symbolic significance. The Olympic Games become a unifying event that unites people on the ground of their love to sport and healthy lifestyle.

At the same time, the Olympics have a considerable impact at all levels from the individual level to the global one. However in spite of the level of the impact of the Olympics, the Games contribute to the formation of the imagined community which allows people to shape the imagined identity, which though is short run and fades away, when the Olympics end. People perceive the Olympics in different ways but they can hardly stay indifferent or unaffected by the Olympics.

In addition, it is possible to distinguish participants of the Olympics and the spectators, i.e. those individuals, who attend the competitions as well as those, who watch broadcasts of those competitions (Chomsky, 1997). Sportspersons participating in the Olympics develop their identity feeling their unity as the community of sportspersons. Even though this community is imagined in a way, because they may never encounter each other in their life before or after the competitions, but during those few weeks of the Olympic Games, they live like a sort of family or community, where all sportspersons feel their belongingness to that community, no matter how short run the existence of this community is (Bagdikian, 2000). The audience of the Olympics comprises another large group of people which may unite in imagined communities and develop their identities within those communities. These communities may exist at the local level, as well as at the national or even international level.

People can unite into small communities and change their identity while being a part of those small communities at the local level. For instance, people attending a sport bar on the regular basis develop their identity. They may not even know each others’ name and they may invent their new identity being united by their passion to sport and the Olympic Games.

At the national level, people can also unite in imagined community of fans supporting their national teams and sportspersons representing their countries on the Olympics. In such a situation, people feel their unity as the nation but they have the authentic feeling of the belongingness to the community, where they can feel being a part of the nation. In such communities, they develop their identities that may be different from the identity, which they have in their everyday life. For instance, the Olympics may raise patriotic feelings and emotions that contribute to the unity of members of the imagined community consisting of fans of sports and people interested in the Olympics.

Moreover, individuals can develop broader communities, at the international level, when each person attending the Olympics feel being members of one community that unites people, who like the Olympics so much that they have abandoned everything and came to watch the major sport events of the Olympics. They may create their small communities in social networks, where they create new imagined identities (Bagdikian, 2000). New communities unite people interested in the Olympics. They can use social networks to establish social relations and communicate with each other and steadily form the international community of people, who are interested in the Olympics and who want to attend the Games.

At the same time, they can shape their imagined identity to spend a few weeks in their imagined community. If they use social networks to establish friendly relations with other community members, they can create new identities and other users will never know, whom they really communicate with. Such a freedom of the development of the imagined community allows users and people interested in the Olympics they construct their new identities feeling the unity of their community (Chomsky, 1997).

The formation of the identity at all levels among both sportspersons and spectators occur under the impact of the Olympics and its media presentation. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the fact that the identity of people united by the Olympics occurs under the impact of the Games. The media of the Olympics contribute to the formation of the original atmosphere of the Games that make them a distinct sport event. The Olympics are the brand that always attracts many people from all over the world. For instance, the Olympics is one of the main sport events for professional sportspersons, who view the win on the Olympics as the major achievement in their professional sport career.

As for fans and spectators at all levels, they also are vulnerable to the impact of the Olympics. In this regard, the impact of the traditional perception of the Olympics as the exclusive sport event and the past of the Olympic Games that dates back to the time of ancient Greece is particularly strong. The Olympics are usually a sustainability disaster. Can Paris be different?

Organizers of the Paris Olympics have pledged that the event will be “historic for the climate,” setting a goal of generating no more than half the planet-warming emissions produced by recent Summer Games in London and Rio.

But putting on an event that attracts nearly 13 million spectators, athletes and officials from over 200 countries is, by definition, a carbon-heavy enterprise. A 2021 analysis of past Olympic Games found that the events have never been very environmentally sustainable, and they’ve tended to get worse over time, despite organizers touting the Games’ green credentials.

“What you can see in the Olympics in general is a difference between the rhetoric and the actual facts,” said Martin Müller, lead author of the 2021 study. “And the thing is that the rhetoric usually prevails.”

The Washington Post talked to experts to get a reality check on whether Paris’s goals are achievable. “It’s possible,” said Müller, who is a professor of geography and sustainability at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. “I wouldn’t question the legitimacy of the goal.”

What Paris wants to achieve

The Paris Olympics’ organizing committee says it has a plan to keep these Games within a budget of 1.58 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent — the same warming impact as driving 376,000 cars for a year.

Previous Olympics have attempted to address and account for Games-related emissions using a similar approach, but no recent Games appeared to have gone as far as Paris is planning. Organizers say they’ll achieve their planned cuts by slashing emissions in three categories: construction, transportation and operations.

“It was an opportunity for us to stage this Games in a different way,” said Georgina Grenon, Paris 2024’s director of environmental excellence, “both for us to prove that the Games can be done differently, but also to leave a legacy.”

Recycled venues

New construction is usually a major source of Games’ emissions — one that organizers can control. While Olympic host cities often splurge on building venues, arenas and other infrastructure, Paris organizers plan to mostly use existing or temporary infrastructure, Grenon said.

What they built new — including the Olympic Village and the aquatic center — generated 30 percent less carbon per square meter compared with a standard project in France today, she added.

Paris’s construction targets are achievable, experts said.

“It actually is relatively easy to get to a 30 percent reduction,” said Victor Olgyay, a buildings expert at RMI, an energy think tank. For instance, some studies have shown that builders could reach a nearly 50 percent reduction in emissions at similar costs by using alternative materials instead of traditional cement, concrete and steel, he said.

To hit its emissions target, Paris has built many structures, including the aquatic arena, out of wood, low-carbon cement or materials salvaged from deconstruction.

The strategies to cut emissions from construction are “generally good practices and get them to the low carbon footprint,” said Nora Esram, senior director for research at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. “We have the materials, we have the technology. These are not new.”

Getting there

Paris organizers expect to sell 12.8 million tickets to the Games, with spectators generating an estimated 395,000 metric tons of carbon emissions while traveling, according to Grenon.

That emissions estimate is lower than what the London Olympics budgeted in 2012. Those Games drew more than 11 million spectators, who were expected to generate 456,000 metric tons of emissions, according to a pre-Games report . A post-Games report found that London’s spectator emissions were even higher than expected , although it didn’t specify how many of those emissions came from travel.

“The visitor travel estimate strikes me as relatively low,” Müller said. “Maybe Paris might have the same kind of travel [as London]. They’re in a similar location, globally speaking, to London.”

Grenon said it’s too early to know where the Paris spectators will be coming from or how they’re traveling. “It’s still an estimate,” she said. “We haven’t sold all the tickets.”

Organizers can’t control how spectators will travel to the Games. All they can do is encourage fans to travel by train when possible — especially if they’re coming from nearby European countries. Olympic partner Air France is advertising a deal for fans from faraway countries that allows them to book flights into France with a connecting train ride to destinations such as Bordeaux, Nantes, Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Nice, Marseille and Lille, which will host soccer, handball and sailing events.

The Olympic committee is recruiting athletes to set a good example. Four national teams — from the Netherlands, Britain, Belgium and Switzerland — have agreed to travel by train. The Games’ officials and 15,000 athletes are expected to generate an additional 142,000 metric tons of travel emissions.

“Will this avoid transportation and air travel [emissions] altogether? Certainly not,” Grenon said. “But at least we’re trying to do what we can at this stage in 2024 to address the issue.”

Much as during the London and Rio games, Paris organizers are encouraging spectators to travel around the city using public transportation or bicycles.

Powering the Games

Olympic organizers say they’ve practically zeroed out their energy emissions. Electricity and natural gas will make up less than 1 percent of the Games’ overall footprint, according to official estimates.

Some of the Games’ energy will come from solar panels, which will dot the roofs of the Olympic Village, float atop the surface of the Seine and hang over the new aquatics stadium.

The rest will come from the French power grid, which is dominated by nuclear power and produces some of the lowest emissions in Europe . Olympic organizers say they’ve made a deal with the French national utility Électricité de France (EDF) to buy renewable power equivalent to what the Games consume.

EDF also created new backup electrical connections for the Olympic stadiums, which will make the power supply more reliable. As a result, Paris organizers say they won’t run any of the backup diesel generators that stadiums typically keep on standby in case of a power failure.

Organizers wouldn’t share details about the Olympic cauldron, which they said would be revealed at the Opening Ceremonies. During the London Olympics , the natural-gas-burning cauldron consumed more energy than any single stadium, venue or housing complex.

Müller said it’s not surprising that energy emissions would be so low, since French electricity is so clean. Plus, he said, “most of the energy emissions are constrained to the two-week period of the actual Olympic Games, which is relatively short.”

Keeping cool

More savings could come from lowering how much energy is needed to cool buildings. In addition to planting thousands of trees around Paris, the city has installed misters and light-colored surfaces and sidewalks to help combat the summer heat. In recent years, France, along with other parts of Europe, has weathered record-breaking heat waves during summer months.

“Those make a big difference,” Olgyay said. “It’ll be a lot cooler. You’re more comfortable, but also your building is more comfortable, so that’s going to reduce the impact of that heat on buildings.”

To further cut energy usage, organizers of the Games said the Olympic Village — which features buildings with improved insulation — will use a geothermal water-cooling system. Instead of traditional air conditioning, the buildings will rely on a network of pipes cycling water cooled underground.

World Athletics will pay $50,000 to Olympic gold medalists in track and field events

World Athletics, the governing body that oversees track and field competitions worldwide, will award $50,000 in prize money to gold medal winners at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

In doing so, the organization will become the first international federation to offer prize money directly to Olympic medalists, a landmark moment in the Olympic Games' slow-but-sure shift away from amateurism.

In total, the World Athletics prize pot for 2024 will amount to $2.4 million for the 48 men's and women's athletics events, which include track and field competitions like the 100-meter run, pole vault and javelin, alongside road races such as the marathon and race walk. Relay teams of four will split the winnings with $12,500 apiece.

In Wednesday's announcement , World Athletics also said it would pay prize money on a tiered basis to all medal winners in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, with details to be announced closer to the event.

The Paris Olympics medals will have pieces of the Eiffel Tower

"While it is impossible to put a marketable value on winning an Olympic medal, or on the commitment and focus it takes to even represent your country at an Olympic Games, I think it is important we start somewhere and make sure some of the revenues generated by our athletes at the Olympic Games are directly returned to those who make the Games the global spectacle that it is," said Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics and a two-time Olympic gold medal runner.

The prize money comes from payments to World Athletics from the International Olympic Committee, which brings in billions of dollars in revenue from broadcasting deals and other sponsorships. The IOC then redistributes millions each year to international sporting federations and national Olympic committees.

Russians and belarusians can compete in the 2024 olympics — as neutral athletes.

The IOC was not aware of the decision until shortly before World Athletics made the public announcement, Coe said.

No other sporting federations have announced similar plans to compensate medalists.

Some countries give their athletes bonuses for medaling

Many Olympic athletes receive medal bonuses from their home countries. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee awards its athletes $37,500 for gold medals, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze. Some countries that field far fewer athletes offer much larger bonuses: Hong Kong offers the equivalent of about $638,000 to gold medalists, and Singapore offers about $740,000. But other countries, including the U.K. and New Zealand, offer no prize money at all.

The $50,000 prizes for gold medalists underscore World Athletics' "commitment to empowering the athletes and recognising the critical role they play in the success of any Olympic Games," Coe said.

The costs to train and compete in the Olympics can be extremely high for athletes, who must pay thousands of dollars each year for coaching and travel to events, all while they forgo traditional career earnings in order to pursue their sport. Like many countries, the United States does not offer direct federal support for its Olympic athletes.

Some athletes, especially those who compete in sports that attract the highest viewership, such as gymnastics, are able to earn money from sponsorship deals.

Karsten Warholm, a Norwegian sprinter who won a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, welcomed the news.

"I think it's good so I want to salute them for it," Warholm told Reuters . Norway is among the countries that does not offer a bonus to its medalists. "It doesn't change my motivation to win because for the Olympics I'm not in it for the money. The gold medal is worth a lot more to me personally."

The Paris Olympics’ One Sure Thing: Cyberattacks

“We will be attacked,” the official responsible for fending off cyberthreats said. To prepare, organizers have been hosting war games and paying “bug bounties” to hackers.

In his office on one of the upper floors of the headquarters of the Paris Olympic organizing committee, Franz Regul has no doubt what is coming.

“We will be attacked,” said Mr. Regul, who leads the team responsible for warding off cyberthreats against this year’s Summer Games in Paris.

Companies and governments around the world now all have teams like Mr. Regul’s that operate in spartan rooms equipped with banks of computer servers and screens with indicator lights that warn of incoming hacking attacks. In the Paris operations center, there is even a red light to alert the staff to the most severe danger.

So far, Mr. Regul said, there have been no serious disruptions. But as the months until the Olympics tick down to weeks and then days and hours, he knows the number of hacking attempts and the level of risk will rise exponentially. Unlike companies and governments, though, who plan for the possibility of an attack, Mr. Regul said he knew exactly when to expect the worst.

“Not many organizations can tell you they will be attacked in July and August,” he said.

Worries over security at major events like the Olympics have usually focused on physical threats, like terrorist attacks. But as technology plays a growing role in the Games rollout, Olympic organizers increasingly view cyberattacks as a more constant danger.

The threats are manifold. Experts say hacking groups and countries like Russia, China, North Korea and Iran now have sophisticated operations capable of disabling not just computer and Wi-Fi networks but also digital ticketing systems, credential scanners and even the timing systems for events.

Fears about hacking attacks are not just hypothetical. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea, a successful attack nearly derailed the Games before they could begin .

That cyberattack started on a frigid night as fans arrived for the opening ceremony. Signs that something was amiss came all at once. The Wi-Fi network, an essential tool to transmit photographs and news coverage, suddenly went down. Simultaneously, the official Olympics smartphone app — the one that held fans’ tickets and essential transport information — stopped functioning, preventing some fans from entering the stadium. Broadcast drones were grounded and internet-linked televisions meant to show images of the ceremony across venues went blank.

But the ceremony went ahead, and so did the Games. Dozens of cybersecurity officials worked through the night to repel the attack and to fix the glitches, and by the next morning there was little sign that a catastrophe had been averted when the first events got underway.

Since then, the threat to the Olympics has only grown. The cybersecurity team at the last Summer Games, in Tokyo in 2021, reported that it faced 450 million attempted “security events.” Paris expects to face eight to 12 times that number, Mr. Regul said.

Perhaps to demonstrate the scale of the threat, Paris 2024 cybersecurity officials use military terminology freely. They describe “war games” meant to test specialists and systems, and refer to feedback from “veterans of Korea” that has been integrated into their evolving defenses.

Experts say a variety of actors are behind most cyberattacks, including criminals trying to hold data in exchange for a lucrative ransom and protesters who want to highlight a specific cause. But most experts agree that only nation states have the ability to carry out the biggest attacks.

The 2018 attack in Pyeongchang was initially blamed on North Korea, South Korea’s antagonistic neighbor. But experts, including agencies in the U.S. and Britain, later concluded that the true culprit — now widely accepted to be Russia — deliberately used techniques designed to pin the blame on someone else.

This year, Russia is once again the biggest focus.

Russia’s team has been barred from the Olympics following the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, although a small group of individual Russians will be permitted to compete as neutral athletes. France’s relationship with Russia has soured so much that President Emmanuel Macron recently accused Moscow of attempting to undermine the Olympics through a disinformation campaign.

The International Olympic Committee has also pointed the finger at attempts by Russian groups to damage the Games. In November, the I.O.C. issued an unusual statement saying it had been targeted by defamatory “fake news posts” after a documentary featuring an A.I.-generated voice-over purporting to be the actor Tom Cruise appeared on YouTube.

Later, a separate post on Telegram — the encrypted messaging and content platform — mimicked a fake news item broadcast by the French network Canal Plus and aired false information that the I.O.C. was planning to bar Israeli and Palestinian teams from the Paris Olympics.

Earlier this year, Russian pranksters — impersonating a senior African official — managed to get Thomas Bach, the I.O.C. president, on the phone. The call was recorded and released earlier this month. Russia seized on Mr. Bach’s remarks to accuse Olympic officials of engaging in a “conspiracy” to keep its team out of the Games.

In 2019, according to Microsoft, Russian state hackers attacked the computer networks of at least 16 national and international sports and antidoping organizations, including the World Anti-Doping Agency, which at the time was poised to announce punishments against Russia related to its state-backed doping program.

Three years earlier, Russia had targeted antidoping officials at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. According to indictments of several Russian military intelligence officers filed by the United States Department of Justice , operatives in that incident spoofed hotel Wi-Fi networks used by antidoping officials in Brazil to successfully penetrate their organization’s email networks and databases.

Ciaran Martin, who served as the first chief executive of Britain’s national cybersecurity center, said Russia’s past behavior made it “the most obvious disruptive threat” at the Paris Games. He said areas that might be targeted included event scheduling, public broadcasts and ticketing systems.

“Imagine if all athletes are there on time, but the system scanning iPhones at the gate has gone down,” said Mr. Martin, who is now a professor at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford .

“Do you go through with a half-empty stadium, or do we delay?” he added. “Even being put in that position where you either have to delay it or have world-class athletes in the biggest event of their lives performing in front of a half-empty stadium — that’s absolutely a failure .”

Mr. Regul, the Paris cybersecurity head, declined to speculate about any specific nation that might target this summer’s Games. But he said organizers were preparing to counter methods specific to countries that represent a “strong cyberthreat.”

This year, Paris organizers have been conducting what they called “war games” in conjunction with the I.O.C. and partners like Atos, the Games’ official technology partner, to prepare for attacks. In those exercises, so-called ethical hackers are hired to attack systems in place for the Games, and “bug bounties” are offered to those who discover vulnerabilities.

Hackers have previously targeted sports organizations with malicious emails, fictional personas, stolen passwords and malware. Since last year, new hires at the Paris organizing committee have undergone training to spot phishing scams.

“Not everyone is good,” Mr. Regul said.

In at least one case, a Games staff member paid an invoice to an account after receiving an email impersonating another committee official. Cybersecurity staff members also discovered an email account that had attempted to impersonate the one assigned to the Paris 2024 chief, Tony Estanguet.

Millions more attempts are coming. Cyberattacks have typically been “weapons of mass irritation rather than weapons of mass destruction,” said Mr. Martin, the former British cybersecurity official.

“At their worst,” he said, “they’ve been weapons of mass disruption.”

Even without the help of Apollo, the flame that is to burn at the Paris Olympics was kindled Tuesday at the site of the ancient games in southern Greece.

Cloudy skies prevented the traditional lighting , when an actress dressed as an ancient Greek priestess uses the sun to ignite a silver torch — after offering up a symbolic prayer to Apollo, the ancient Greek sun god.

Instead, she used a backup flame that had been lit on the same spot Monday, during the final rehearsal.

Normally, the foremost of a group of priestesses in long, pleated dresses dips the fuel-filled torch into a parabolic mirror which focuses the sun’s rays on it, and fire spurts forth.

But this time she didn’t even try, going straight for the backup flame, kept in a copy of an ancient Greek pot. Ironically, a few minutes later the sun shone forth.

From the ancient stadium in Olympia, a relay of torchbearers will carry the flame along a 5,000-kilometer (3,100-mile) route through Greece, including several islands, until the handover to Paris Games organizers in Athens on April 26.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the flame lighting combined “a pilgrimage to our past in ancient Olympia, and an act of faith in our future.”

“In these difficult times ... with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news,” he said. “We are longing for something which brings us together; something that is unifying; something that gives us hope.”

Thousands of spectators from all over the world packed Olympia for Tuesday’s event amid the ruined temples and sports grounds where the ancient games were held from 776 B.C.-393 A.D.

The sprawling site, in a lush valley by the confluence of two rivers, is at its prettiest in the spring, teeming with pink-flowering Judas trees, small blue irises and the occasional red anemone.

Greek authorities maintained high security around Olympia on Tuesday, after protests by rights activists disrupted the lighting ceremonies for the Beijing summer and winter games. Armed police stopped incoming vehicles and checked for explosives, while sniffer dogs combed the grounds.

The first torchbearer was Greek rower Stefanos Douskos, a gold medalist in 2021 in Tokyo. He ran to a nearby monument that contains the heart of French Baron Pierre de Coubertin , the driving force behind the modern revival of the games.

The next runner was Laure Manaudou, a French swimmer who won three medals at Athens in 2004. She handed over to senior European Union official Margaritis Schinas, a Greek.

The IOC’s Bach praised Paris organizers for doing “an outstanding job” with preparations for the July 26-August 11 games.

He also highlighted their environmental impact, saying that cleanup efforts will make it possible to swim in the River Seine, which traverses Paris, “for the first time in a hundred years.”

IOC politics briefly reared their head in Olympia as well, with the heads of two sports federations criticizing track and field leader Sebastian Coe for breaking with Olympic tradition last week by promising prize money of $50,000 to each of its gold medalists in Paris. The money will be paid from the share of Olympic games revenues that the IOC pays governing bodies of Olympic sports.

International Cycling Union President David Lappartient complained that Coe did not consult with other sports before announcing his move.

“We really believe that that’s not the Olympic spirit,” Lappartient said. “If we concentrate the money ... on only top athletes, only gold, then of course a lot of opportunities will disappear for athletes all over the world.”

Coe has been widely expected to run for the IOC presidency, which should become vacant in 2025. Lappartient is close to Bach and is increasingly seen as a potential successor.

From Greece, the Olympic flame will travel from Athens’ port of Piraeus on the Belem , a French three-masted sailing ship built in 1896 — the year of the first modern games in Athens.

According to Captain Aymeric Gibet, it’s due on May 8 in the southern French port of Marseille, a city founded by Greek colonists some 2,600 years ago.

The Belem arrived in Katakolo, near Olympia, on Monday. Lookers-on included a small, enthusiastic group of tourists from the northwestern French region of Brittany, where the ship’s homeport of Nantes is, waving French and Breton flags.

“We thought it would be a unique opportunity to see the flame lighting at the historic site of Olympia,” said Jean-Michel Pasquet from Lorient, near Nantes. “And when we also learnt the Belem would carry the flame ... we said we must do this.”

But Pasquet said he’d have to watch the Paris Games from home.

“For us, it would be really very expensive, unaffordable,” to go to the venues, he said. “So we’ll watch them on television ... from our armchairs.”

ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece (AP) — Even without the help of Apollo, the flame that is to burn at the Paris Olympics was kindled Tuesday at the site of the ancient games in southern Greece.
